Music has been my passion for as long as I remember, however, it didn’t take me long to learn that I needed to work towards a more practical goal. All my life, I have struggled with deciding whether to pursue my passion or settle for something stable that will still satisfy me. This battle only worsened when I got to high school, as I found myself frequently wondering if I’m made the right choice in schools or was going on the right path. This continued until half-way through my junior year, when I had a meeting with the college counselor, with whom I shared some of these concerns. She gave me this idea of producing an EP and really encouraged me to do it. I’ve been working towards it ever since. I also wanted to be sure that music was something I could actually do for the rest of my life, not just a silly passion that would be ruined if I had to spend an enormous amount of time and effort on it. So I looked for a producer and locked down a deal as soon as I could. Some things went really right, and a lot of them went left. However, this project has taught me a lot about my strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, it’s given me a little more confidence in my choice of career. Don’t get me wrong, I know I have a long way to go, but it feels good to have finally taken my first step in the right direction. Bibliography: "Searching Forproduce My Music?" Produce My Music with World-class Musicians - Online Recording Studio. Accessed May 24, 2019. https://studiopros.com/music-production.php?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=WabHub - Musicians&utm_term=produce my music&utm_content=producer musician. At first, I looked for actual music companies to hire a producer. This website allowed me to contact professional producers and ask them questions about the process and pricing. This helped me gain a little more insight on the direction I wanted to head in for the album. Google Search. I thought a good place to start with songwriting would be to research techniques. I watched Youtube videos and read a plethora of how-to articles. These resources made the songwriting process a little faster and a lot less stressful, as well as provided tips and tricks that helped me get through writer’s block. "Produce a Track From Start To Finish - The Ultimate Guide." MusicTech. April 03, 2019. Accessed May 24, 2019. https://www.musictech.net/guides/essential-guide/produce-a-track/. Part of my goal was to gain more knowledge about the components and necesseties of composing/producing. I also need to learn more so that I could communicate more efficiently with my producer about what I wanted from him during session. This site took me through a detailed step-by-step run down of the steps you taken to make a song and how you go should go about navigating the process. "Web Player: Music for Everyone." Spotify. Accessed May 24, 2019. https://open.spotify.com/browse/featured. Spotify was my immediate go to whenever I was stuck on anything at any point during this project. More often than not, when I would listen to music I would note the different elements of the track that I heard. This helped get the juices flowing when I needed to make my tracks sound fuller but I had only created a guitar riff or bass line. "Meet Google Drive – One Place for All Your Files." Google. Accessed May 24, 2019. https://drive.google.com/drive/u/2/. Google Drive held many components of this project during its creation. I had a song doc that I used to keep a sort of song journal that I could update and share with my producer so he could get a feel for the kind of sound I was going for. I also kept all the draft track files and demos on a separate doc also accessible to my producer as well as my mentors. It made updates and communication easier as well as eliminated trivial recaps that waste valuable session and meeting time. Rolka, Jeff. "Jeff Rolka." YouTube. Accessed May 24, 2019. https://www.youtube.com/user/jtrolka. Since I was the recording artist on my EP tracks, I had to start acting like it. This meant practice, practice, practice as much as my schedule would allow. This channel was introduced to me by my vocal teacher and I practiced about 3 different exercises about 3-4 times a week. "The World's Favorite Online Thesaurus!" Thesaurus.com. Accessed May 24, 2019. https://www.thesaurus.com/. This source also proved to be a major help during the songwriting process. There were many instances in which I couldn’t think of the right word, needed to a similar word with more syllables to fill out the verse, etc. In any case, a thesaurus was necessary to ensure that I delivered the right message using the right words with the right connotation. Capstone website: https://lzheng197.wixsite.com/chinesecapstone

I firmly believe that no matter where you want to be successful, you must put it in a global perspective. When it comes to having a global perspective, we have to talk about China. It is widely known that China has become a rising star on the international stage and has made great achievements in many aspects. However, we also have to admit that our understanding of China is one-sided and rather biased. Therefore, for my capstone, I created a website to introduce some Chinese culture and customs. In the website, I cover the foods, drinks, games, and tour sites. I really hope through my capstone, people can have a better understanding of China.

Source #1: Talk about China in English
https://www.worldcat.org/title/yong-ying-yu-jie-shao-zhong-guo/oclc/886238642
My sister was helped me to do my capstone. Because this book stored in the library which in the China, she helped me to borrow it from the library. And she also help me to find the informations from the book. This book introduces the most classic Chinese urban culture, human history, scenic spots, national treasures, and folk quintessence. Even though I have lived in China for 17 years, I have not introduced the experience of China to others in English. This book taught me how to introduce China to others in English and also provided me with a lot of information.

Source #2: Insights into Chinese culture
I also found this book in the China by my sister's help. This book captures some of the most distinctive content and highlights of Chinese culture. It introduces concrete and in-depth introductions with typical examples and materials. While introducing knowledge, it try to explain the spirit of Chinese culture, inner meaning and core value of Chinese culture. And it also provided a lot of help for my capstone.

Source #3: The Eight great traditions of Chinese Food
https://usa.lkk.com/zh-hk/cooking-stories/the-eight-great-traditions-of-chinese-cuisine
The website is Chinese, it introduces the eight great traditions of chinese cuisine, and also show the most notable cuisine in each style cuisine. In the capstone, I introduced the eight great traditions of chinese cuisine in the food page.

I believe that high-school is a place of constant growth, no matter the grade, it is still a place of daily growth. I want people to realize that change is a completely normal and a human thing to go through. I want students to realize that high-school is not a place that is against you, but working with you, side by side, you just have to figure out how to work and balance things out. For my project, I wanted to invest my time on something that I felt would benefit high-schoolers, or the SLA community specifically. With this in mind, I came up with the idea to create a somewhat reminder of how important high-school is, and how to utilize your time in high-school. Also to remind high-schoolers that this is a place of development, that not everything will go as planned. I wanted to create something that would benefit SLA high-schoolers when advice is needed. I conducted interviews from a person in each grade, asking them a variety of questions that I believed would be useful to hear as a response. I did this hoping it would give advice to those in every grade as well as help them get through high-school a little better. I also included a bunch of pictures that were taken throughout the 2018-2019 school year to showcase this year at SLA and what high-school looks like in pictures.

Not knowing how to record certain things, or being familiar with any angles or lighting, or anything that contributes to having a high quality video, and nice shot of something, this source will not only benefit me when creating my movie, but it will also guide me along the way. I will be allowed to have a much better understanding on how to shoot my movie. This will allow my movie to be smoother and more appealing for the eye to see. This will also allow my movie to have diversity when it comes to the angles, the lighting, and etc.

Source #2: Courage, Film. “My Interview Tips To Documentary Filmmakers by Paul Blackthorne.” YouTube, YouTube, 1 Dec. 2013, www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8L4WgUTpXs.

With my project, interviewing people will have to happen. Although I have been interviewed plenty of times before, I have never been the interviewer, just the interviewee. In order to have a successful interview, I will need help. I will need to learn from to talk, which tone of voice to use, and etc. This source is tips from someone who not only knows how to interview someone, but is also associated with the film and digital world. The tips provided will allow my movie to have a nice flow to the interview when including these interviews into my movie/film/documentary.

Source #3: CreativeCreations.tv. “Creative Tips | How to Interview People.” YouTube, YouTube, 28 July 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPXOKZQzp-g.

With my project, I will need to interact with others that are involved and active in the community I am a part of. I will need to interview them. I have never interviewed someone in a way where it is important or for something that I am creating, especially not something as big as a senior project. With this being said, this source will help and benefit me when doing this because it will help me be a better interviewer, and giving my interviewee a better interview. I will also learn more and be able to accomplish more out of the person I am interviewing when using tips given from this website.

For me, personally, when it comes to projects that I have to do something in my interest. I tend to somewhat lose motivation and I start to procrastinate only due to the fact that I feel as if I can easily get done. This is because I believe that since this is a topic I am familiar with and I am dictating, I can easily wing it, but knowing how big of a project this is, I know that I will need as much motivation as I can get and I will need as much time as I can possibly get as well. This being said, I wanted to look up ways to keep myself motivated because my project is something that I actually want to invest my time into, and naste it. This source can help guide me into being a better student when it comes to completing this project that I feel passionate about.

Source #5:

“How to Make a Documentary.” Adora Learning Center, https://www.adorama.com/alc/how-to-make-a-documentary

Although I know that I can simply use my phone to record and edit and etc, I would also like my movie to be the best it can possibly be. This being said, it can only be done if I use the correct equipment as well as the correct tools. With this source, it tells me what specifically to look for when completing my movie. What techniques to use when completing my movie will also be needed, and this source provides this information. A movie/film/docu consists of so many different aspects and this source is only one of the many sources that will help provide different parts of creating a film like piece.

Source #6: Kessler, Sarah. “How to Conduct a Job Interview.” Inc.com, Inc., www.inc.com/guides/2010/04/conducting-job-interviews.html.

The interviews that I will be conducting will most definitely not be job interviews, but rather interviews that allow me to understand people more, how they have evolved and grown as a person through this community we are all a part of. Although this source does primarily focus on conducting job interviews rather than the interviews that I will be doing, I believe this source will help guide my interviews. Interviews should include being professional and the most professional and successful interviews consists of job interviews. This will help me visualize how the interview should go and what I should leave thinking and with.

Source #7: “Making Documentaries: A Step By Step Guide.” Desktop-Documentaries.com, www.desktop-documentaries.com/making-documentaries.html.

As I said before for the source above, I am not familiar with the digital world, nor do I know where or how to approach/start this “movie” of mine. Although this source does somewhat relate to the source above this one, this source helps me when creating my movie step by step. This will allow my movie to have a better flow and also have a variety of different things that can bring my movie to life. It will allow my movie to be more captivating and be more interesting for myself, as well as the audience to see. This source will help guide me as well.

Source #8: Moore, Michael, and Michael Moore. “Michael Moore's 13 Rules for Making Documentary Films.” IndieWire, IndieWire, 10 Sept. 2014, www.indiewire.com/2014/09/michael-moores-13-rules-for-making-documentary-films-22384/.

I have chosen this source to use when completing my capstone. I am not one who is good with film or documentaries, or anything related to the recording/digital world. With this being said, I  believe feedback and advice from those who know what they are doing and completely familiar with the digital world can help guide me to create the ‘movie” I know I can make. With this source, examples are given as to how to approach certain things, and which certain things to approach when creating this movie of mine. With this source, I also learned to make this documentary not a documentary or film, but a movie.

Source #9: Stibbe, Matthew. “How to Interview Someone like a Journalist.” Inbound Marketing for B2B Technology Companies, The Articulate Marketing Blog, www.articulatemarketing.com/blog/how-to-interview-someone.

When it comes to collecting information and recording information based off of what people are saying, there are certain elements to pay more attention to. There are also different techniques that can be used when focusing and collecting data/info from the interviewee. Although I have a general idea of what I should be paying attention to and focusing on when interviewing people, it doesn’t harm me to have more understanding and techniques as to what to pay attention to, and tips to gather more or close to all information. The best thing I believe doing is writing or collecting almost word for word what the interviewee says and when I can’t exactly record maybe, this source will come in handy.

Source #10: Tips, Science Filmmaking. “6 Tips for (Documentary) Filmmakers.” YouTube, YouTube, 19 Aug. 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0qsl_Tr_S4.

With this project that I have in mind, I will have to, to the best of my abilities, become almost a director. I am the director of my own film/docu/movie. Knowing nothing about how to be a director, how I want my movie to go, or anything related to how the finish product might look like, this source will definitely help me. Any tips that will allow me to have a better understanding and put together a piece that will capture what I have in mind will help me. This is also specifically towards filmmakers who are created a documentary type piece, which I am, so that will help me as well.

My Tribute To Dance Documentary: https://youtu.be/oA4zObbmqlY My capstone process came along pretty slowly, I spent a lot of the time trying to figure out every detail that I wanted to come out of my dance documentary. I found that even spending a few minutes looking through what I had so far, it brought me to my final product. I ran my ideas through friends and teachers about what my focus on the documentary be. After brainstorming, I knew that I wanted the focus of the documentary to be about my experience. Ultimately, I wanted to make my whole documentary a tribute, through home videos, photos, and videos. Connecting that with how I can take steps to revisit the feeling I felt when dancing, and that taking small steps makes all the difference. My final product is called “My Tribute To Dance Documentary”, in this documentary I told my story, I collaborated with my peers as well as mentors outside of school. The layout of the documentary was to tell my story in chapters, in each chapter I discuss what dance meant to me during that time, as a child, a preteen, and teenager/young adult. All of the segments came together to form one main idea, to highlight my journey of rediscovering dance. I used to be super close minded in regards to dance, and how I would never be able to regain that part of me again. Through this process, I found out that I could. Bibliography: "A Dancer's Brain Develops in a Unique Way." University of Helsinki. May 03, 2018. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://www.helsinki.fi/en/news/health/a-dancers-brain-develops-in-a-unique-way Adding onto one of the sources that I wanted to incorporate into my capstone addressing scientific studies involving dance. Using the research about how dancing also affects a dancer’s brain because there are a lot of ways that I never really thought about when it came to dance, I felt invigorated when I was dancing. And I felt like I wanted to make sure that I could explain how important dance is not only as something that aspiring dancers want to learn, but also the healthy effects of it. This is an important knowledgeable section of the capstone that I would need to be able to provide the website that I will create with the information that is provided. "Dancing and the Brain." Sugar and the Brain | Department of Neurobiology. Accessed January 24, 2019. http://neuro.hms.harvard.edu/harvard-mahoney-neuroscience-institute/brain-newsletter/and-brain-series/dancing-and-brain Personally, I felt like I wanted to incorporate the mental and physical benefits of dance in the terms with my personal experience. I haven’t fully done research on the effects of dance on mental health because I’ve always been so sure that I fully believe that my mental health and attitude about life is a huge improvement for me. This will provide my capstone with a knowledgeable aspect that I connect to. I selected this source because there is an in depth scientific breakdown that I relate and agree with. I think it was just interesting to read more and write about the mental effects of the brain when it comes to dance and the stimulating portions of the brain in relation to dance. Daniellecleary Follow. "Features of Documentaries." LinkedIn SlideShare. July 11, 2012. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.slideshare.net/daniellecleary/features-of-documentaries This source provides information about the elements of documentaries and about the aspects of documentaries that work well and produces a documentary with elements that captures the audience’s attention as well as conveying my message about dance being a core part of the person I was and am today. Like elements about interviews, using the research from this source to identify how the flow of the dialogue would look and be. Also through this source, being strategic with lighting and the mood of the video. I also didn’t understand the dramatisation to be apart of the documentary, and through this source, I will use the sense of drama to portray the dialogue or the voiceover that will be playing as the video clips pass. Dise, Justin. "Filmmaking 101: Camera Shot Types." About B&H | B&H Photo Video. July 12, 2016. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/video/tips-and-solutions/filmmaking-101-camera-shot-types I selected this source because although I do have some basics on recording videos and editing them, a documentary is something that is more complex and different than other videos that I’ve worked on. I assume that there are similar shots that I could use in the documentary that I’ve used for other videos that I have recorded and edited, but I wanted to identify and narrow down a shot list that would fit the tone and mood of a documentary, a tribute to dance. Through this source, I learned more about using an extreme long shot to establish the setting that the video will be. And using it in a way that’ll match my voiceover. I also learned through this source to use a bunch of medium shots that are all varied in different ways. "DWMFAM Student Stories: I Dance And All My Bad Energy Is Released." Dance With Me Studios. February 01, 2017. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://dancewithmeusa.com/dwmfam-stories-barbara-paskoff/ In order to create questions that I would want to ask dance partners and teachers I wanted to use this source to understand other dancers’ perspectives and ask them questions that are nongeneric. There are a lot of compelling stories that I read about in this source and the different ways that dance has impacted these dancers. And it’s also just really interesting, personally, to read about other dancers’ experiences because as much as there will be some similarities to my experience compared to others, there are a lot of differences that I want to capture in my documentary. Applying these personal stories to the creation of the questions for other dancers. Lepard, Chase. "5 Crucial Web Design Tips for a Professional Site." Free Website Builder. October 08, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.wix.com/blog/2017/10/5-design-tips-for-a-professional-site/ I selected this source because as one of my end product of this capstone, I will be creating a website using that program and taking tips and advice that makes a good website design. This is an important portion of my capstone because throughout this whole process, everything that I will be working on will be designed and perfected because not only is it something that I love to do, but it’s just also the kind of student I am. This source will be helpful in inspiring designs that I want to set the tone and mood of the documentary as well as the website colors and the font types and sizes. All in all, using this source as an outlet for my website outlet. Modero Dance. Accessed January 25, 2019. http://moderodance.com/ The website to the old dance company that I used to be apart, as well as the company that my old dance teacher created. This source will help for me to generate some questions that I will ask my old dance teacher when I interview her as well as when I record some of her classes. Reflecting back to my experience as a student dancer in her class and wondering if there are any changes since the last time I danced with them. The mission statement on the website gave me insight on the creation of the shots and questions that I want to ask my dance teacher. This is especially helpful because although I was apart of this dance company and I didn’t even know the details of the mission of the company, it was always just something I knew I loved and didn’t really understand or know the personal impact that it was on my dance teacher. "Koresh Dance Company." Koresh Dance Company. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.koreshdance.org/. Information that I will mention in my documentary discussing about the different mission of dance companies to reference a point that I will make. To emphasize my point being that dance means something different to everyone, and that through telling my story about dance is different from the others. To possibly allow for the audience to interpret that dance is such a wide range occupation, interest, hobby, etc. I also feel like it’s important to reference the different dance companies and incorporate the whole dance community into my documentary. "New Research on Memory From Psychological Science." Association for Psychological Science. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/releases/new-research-on-memory-from-ps chological-science-2.html One thing about something that I remembered about dance, was that it took a lot of memory and that was something that I was always proud of about myself, and I wanted to find a source that deals with the explanation about memory. Reflecting on my years of dance in middle school, I had the best memory when it came to dance as well as academically and socially. But once high school came around, I lost track of dance and I lost finding the strength to memorize things. This source is useful because it provides a better understanding on my health in the terms of memory and having my questions answered about how dance involves memory “The History of Balinese Dance.” Tempo English, TEMPO.CO, 19 Feb. 2014, https://en.tempo.co/read/555872/the-history-of-balinese-dance This source provides information about the rich history of Indonesian dance and why it was a history that I heavily enjoyed and loved to dance to, a majority of my middle school career. It was a culture that was so unknown to me but yet once I tried to learn more about it through dance, I was just so engulfed in it, I was obsessed with dance in general, but it wasn’t Indonesian dance, it was a completely different style. But it was still something that caught my eye and remained a part of me for almost 6 years, even know if I stopped dancing with them. "UNESCO - Three Genres of Traditional Dance in Bali." Link to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Website. Accessed January 24, 2019 https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/three-genres-of-traditional-dance-in-bali-00617 More information about Indonesian dance, and the different symbols that are depicted within the moves and postures that are within this culture. ---- could use this to take pictures of these moves--- or even take my own pictures of me doing these moves to be apart of the photo series --- showing moves and the symbols. Showing how intricate dance is and how important it is to have in everyone’s life and a reason why I love it so much. Almost, using the information to convince any reader or audience that dance is an important thing to understand and possibly do. And dance is far more than just how society views it now, the way dance is portrayed nowadays versus how it used to be is misleading and unfair

For my Capstone, I conducted extensive research to formulate a paper and an art representation to answer the question, "How has our current understanding of the brain affected how we treat others?" In order to answer this question, I conducted three interviews, regularly visited my local library for source material, and met with my mentor to plan my next move. With all of this new data about how people have treated others based on psychological evidence, I formulated a four-page research essay which attempted to prove my hypothesis. I thought that no matter how humanity evolved, our treatment of those different than us would never evolve with us. We would remain unable to show true compassion to the stranger. Using the sources gained from the library, I believe I answered this question. In order to represent my research paper, I decided to create an art gallery of five pieces to illustrate the ignorance towards those that are different than the "normal" picture of humanity because of something they cannot control: their mental health. Each piece represents a common, yet misunderstood mental illness that has shown to divide us from each other no matter how much we think we understand about it. Above all, I learned about some of the capabilities of the human lengths of compassion possible in our world, and that because of human nature, the road to true compassion is going to be slow and bumpy with many setbacks. However, I don’t believe it to be impossible.

Bostrom, Bob, and Vikki Clawson. "How People Think: Human Information Processing." Google Docs. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1j0ttZVILY361QojKQ2iGT9cijojWmh6EAWlv0K1FF3Y/edit?usp=sharing.

This source is a document written by some college students about the practical ways people think and how they come to new ideas and conclusions. It explains in depth the step by step way the brain functions. It also shows many applications for this. I want to use this source to view one of the many ways people understand how the human thought process works. There are many others, but this is one of the main ones.

Gallagher, Richard. "As a Psychiatrist, I Diagnose Mental Illness. Also, I Help Spot Demonic Possession." The Washington Post. July 01, 2016. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/07/01/as-a-psychiatrist-i-diagnose-mental-illness-and-sometimes-demonic-possession/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.09d1513bf87d.

This is another source which reveals a more religious perspective of psychology through someone who used to view the science through a more conventional and modern lense but changed his perspective to a way of thinking dating back centuries. This is one of the many perspectives of psychology adapted over the years. It will be useful to my research because of this new light and because it used to be widely accepting, but is less so now. There may be insight into why that is within the article.

Malone, John C. Psychology: Pythagoras to Present. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2011.

This story is a true story of how psychology as a whole developed. It was written by an MIT graduate and scholar and backed up by another college’s recommendations. Despite that, this book can be summarized as a well, summary of all of the psychology from Aristotle’s time to now. In essence, it gives a blatant history lesson on psychology. Although it doesn’t directly relate to my thesis, there are fractions that do give support to the ideas of other selected sources.

Pipes, Taylor. "Understanding the Evolution of Human Thought | Evernote." Evernote. February 02, 2018. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://evernote.com/blog/understanding-the-evolution-of-human-thought/.

This article explores the evolutionary perspective of human thought. It dates back as far as we can go in recorded human history and explores theories around how evolved thinking has gotten over time. This article is a more biological piece than metaphysical or practical one. It relies more on physical evidence and less on interviews, records, and psychological theory. There are many diverse sources used in this article which support its words. For this reason, a more biologically concrete perspective is welcomed to my research compilation.

Simonton, Dean Keith. "Applying the Psychology of Science to the Science of Psychology: Can Psychologists Use Psychological Science to Enhance Psychology as a Science?" Perspectives on Psychological Science 4, no. 1 (2009): 2-4. http://www.jstor.org/stable/40212277.

This source is a bit of a mind-bender, for it asks if psychology as a science can be advanced with psychological science. One may ask if they are the same thing, which this article explains and expands upon. This article, which talks about advancement, reflects upon what institutions of psychology used to be. What used to be may hint upon why it needed to change, a major factor of my thesis. That historical nugget of information is what I hope to find in this source.

Tix, Andy. "The Psychology of Religion." Psychology Today. December 14, 2017. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-pursuit-peace/201712/the-psychology-religion.

This source explores the psychology of religion in a modern, normal aesthetic. The person who wrote this sees is as part, but not all of his life, and wrote this in that lens. The source is yet another perspective of psychology to explore. It is very similar to the Richard Gallagher article but has some key differences to explore in the research field. Those key difference appear in its difference in the nature of belief, the depth explored, and simply general difference in ideas about religion. This article mirrors the previous article on religion.

Capstone

Posted by Zahira Tucker in Capstone · Best · Wed on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 5:13 pm

My capstone was making ¨The Asian Cultures Club.¨ My Inquiry question was ¨How can I bring/spread awareness of asian cultures and customs to the SLA community?¨ By asking this question I had to ask myself was why? I felt that we learn about so many other cultures and being in such a diverse school that's good, but we never hear anything about asian culture and we don´t know much about it to celebrate it like the other cultures. With that I made flyers to start my club and I told a people about it. I got a lot of advise on how to properly hold a meeting and with that I made a presentation for the first club. We talked about goals for the club, introduced ourselves, and what they each want to get from the club. We came to the conclusion of meeting every two weeks to talk about a different place and culture in Asia. We faced some difficulties with the original name in which we had to have another meeting soon after the first. The original name was Asian Alliance, but people took offense therefore I took it into consideration, came together with my club and changed the name. The last couple of weeks after learning about the different cultures we wanted to do a visual representation of what we learned. We decided to do a mural associated to all of the things and some that were related to asian culture. We also decided to put up a map of Asia to show people all of the places people miss out on that should be represented. We also put up each member that played a role and why they felt it was impactful to learn about asian culture and if they felt asian culture was represented in SLA. Lastly, There is a part of the wall with different facts about many different cultures in Asia. "Culture In Thailand - Reach To Teach". 2019. Reach To Teach. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.reachtoteachrecruiting.com/guides/thailand/culture-in-thailand/. This source holds information on the background and culture of Thailand and the people that live there. I decided to use this as a source because the first place and culture we are going to explore is thailand and this would be very useful for research to present. One limitation of this source would be that it doesn’t go into full detail on everything about thailand such as all of the history and background, but mostly talks about the culture. Guide, Thailand, and Thailand Guide. 2019. "Thailand - Thai Language, Culture, Customs And Etiquette". Commisceo-Global.Com. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.commisceo-global.com/resources/country-guides/thailand-guide. This source holds information also on thailand. It goes a little more into the customs of the people and the social economics and the makeup of thailand. This source talks about the language and the time zone and the different types of foods. I found this source useful because it tells more of what I would like to know and teach to my club that I think they would enjoy learning about. Asia, 12Go. 2019. "Culture Of Cambodia – Main Values, Religion, Traditions". 12Go.Asia. Accessed January 25 2019. https://12go.asia/en/cambodia/culture. This source focuses on the culture of Cambodia and their values. It talks about their family traditions and their religious beliefs. Cambodians have very strong family ties, commitment is a word they will heavily associate with family. They have many temples for religious beliefs and for praying. Art and architecture is a big thing in Cambodia where they have a lot of tall and distinct buildings. 2019. Ddceutkal.Ac.In. Accessed January 25 2019. http://ddceutkal.ac.in/Syllabus/MA_history/paper-8.pdf. After reviewing this source I learned more about indian culture, history and heritage. I found this source useful because there was a lot of information I can use for my club when our focus point is india. A lot of people don’t think of india when they think of asian culture. Therefore, I found this source very helpful and unique. This source covers many things such as the geographics of indian culture and characteristics. 2019. Polpemjepangsmjhiugm2015.Files.Wordpress.Com. Accessed January 25 2019. https://polpemjepangsmjhiugm2015.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/yoshio_sugimoto-an-introduction-to-japanese-society.pdf. This source is a book and holds information on japan's society and social sciences. It talks about the social class and diversity and unity of the people that live there. It also talks about the minorities and ethnicities of japan. These are all very important topics to talk about when trying to understand where japan stands and present day issues. This source lacks information on the cultural aspect of japan and focuses more on the people rather than the culture and customs of japan itself. "Chinese Culture, Tradition, And Customs — Penn State University And Peking University". 2019. Elements.Science.Psu.Edu. Accessed January 25 2019. http://elements.science.psu.edu/psu-pku/student-resources/resources-for-penn-state-students/chinese-culture-tradition-and-customs. After reviewing this source I found that It focuses on china and their culture, customs, and traditions. China is a place that so many people have heard of, but don’t really know much about because of what they hear. China has very old traditions and tactics on how they live. Chinese culture can be incorporated in many other smaller cultures, not fully but in some ways it has influenced them. I found this source useful because it relates to my club and would be a good focus place. "Culture Of Laos - History, People, Clothing, Traditions, Women, Beliefs, Food, Customs, Family". 2019. Everyculture.Com. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.everyculture.com/Ja-Ma/Laos.html. This source holds information on the cultural backgrounds, social aspects, and history of the people that live in Laos. They take their culture very seriously and have very specific culture and etiquette. Compared to many of the other places in asia that may be very big that people know about laos isn’t one of those places. Therefore, I wanted to include a more lowkey place that people may not know about and incorporate it into a lesson and a place of focus. This source goes into a large amount of detail on their culture, history, and customs which is why it is useful to me. Guide, Taiwan, and Taiwan Guide. 2019. "Taiwan - Language, Culture, Customs And Etiquette". Commisceo-Global.Com. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.commisceo-global.com/resources/country-guides/taiwan-guide. After reviewing this source I found that it was a very useful source. It talks about taiwan and the background of the people that live there and what it is like to be from taiwan. It also talks about day to day struggles and backgrounds. This information is useful because it gives me a clear understanding of what goes on in taiwan and the cultures. It also is useful for me to know when teaching my club about taiwanese culture. "The New Teacher's Guide To Creating Lesson Plans | Scholastic". 2019. Scholastic.Com. Accessed January 25 2019. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/teaching-content/new-teachers-guide-creating-lesson-plans/. This source holds information on how to make a successful lesson plan and what you need to do in order to achieve that. I found this source important because in order for me to teach and give presentations to the club I need to know how to make a successful lesson plan that people actually enjoy. In this source they focus on younger kids and how you should set up a lesson plan for them but i think it is more creative that way and will engage my club a lot more which is why I used it. One limitation of this source would be that they don’t give much context to how to sit down and make the lesson plan

Sashoya Dougan Capstone

For my capstone, I taught underclassmen a mini-course on animal sciences. I researched different teaching techniques before starting. I felt I was very unfamiliar with actually teach subjects to people rather than having conversations about subjects with them. In addition to this, I researched different lesson plans and activities or warm-ups that I found interesting that the class and I could have fun participating in. For example, for one class I made a connection to the anatomy of human muscles and features to certain animal muscles and features. We had a class discussion about what some similarities could be and why then we broke off and everyone chose one animal. I had them research their animal and imagine what kind of strength the animals would have if it were a human and why. Then I had them present to the class and we had a random animal story related discussion for the last while of class. Most of my ideas have been coming from random curiosities and theories that I’ve formed due to my fascination with animals. I wanted to share these feelings and interests with others and that's why I decided to teach this mini-course. I’ve had a lot of fun with my class and hope they enjoyed their time too.

Plumwood, Val. "Animals and Ecology." In The Eye of the Crocodile, 77-90. ANU Press, 2012. https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt24hcd2.10?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents.

This is a primary source that speaks on the inclusion of animals within the human world, it highlights what it was like when the human race and the animal kingdom were closer and what it's like now. I feel it is important for my students to learn how different species are able to coexist and what it may look like when forced inclusion can go wrong, and how proper inclusion can go as well. I hope that they get a good sense of how to treat animals as well since this topic can probably go into animal cruelty as well.

Milner, Nicky, Chantal Conneller, and Barry Taylor. "Animals in a Wilder COntext." In Star Carr: Studies in Technology, Subsistence, and Environment, 335-44. White Rose University Press, 2018. https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv9b2vq9.16?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents.

This link discusses and shows examples of the scientific meaning and makeup of different species of animals. I feel my topic can get a bit confusing ur to the fact that there is a high demand to know every subcategory scientifically. Hopefully, if I use this right and implement it effectively into worksheets that I provide for my students, they can get it right. I feel like this might be a bit intense for some people since it's isn't really modified for younger viewers and it just throws you into descriptions but I believe that I can make it work.

Dawkins, and Marian Stamp. "Animal Minds and Animal Emotions 1." OUP Academic. August 01, 2015. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://academic.oup.com/icb/article/40/6/883/187667.

This link spoke on the analyzation of animals emotions. It related their emotions and actions and dealt with how we as people should go about interpreting and respecting them. This is also a very important topic to me because in order to work with animals you have to understand them and one of the most difficult aspects of working with animals is figuring out their behaviors and what not. With this, I can more easily guide the students.

Kelly, Morgan. "Understanding Animal Coexistence with a Little Dung and a Lot of DNA." Princeton University. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.princeton.edu/news/2015/10/26/understanding-animal-coexistence-little-dung-and-lot-dna.

This topic mainly covers how we as humans can understand and learn why animals are able to coexist the way they do. I have always been interested in why and how we have so many different species and breeds of things some of which we have not even discovered yet. With this article, I was able to dive into the vast makeups of certain animals habitats and how they are able to smoothly blend into the habitats of others without causing too much commotion. I really believe my students will enjoy this because it covers a lot of questions that I myself have always had.

Nyhus, Philip J. "Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence." Annual Reviews. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/full/10.1146/annurev-environ-110615-085634.

This site also talks about the coexistence of animals. I realize that this theme has become repetitive but the animal world is so vast that there is a lot to cover. This piece covers similar aspects and content but it's written a bit differently and goes in depth further than the others. I didn't mind having so many links on this topic because it's what interested in talking about with my students and I have a feeling that they will find it to be insightful.

Poblocki, Alicia. "Animals & Habitats." The Lifecycle of a Butterfly. Accessed January 25, 2019. http://www3.canisius.edu/~grandem/animalshabitats/SOFTCHALKGOOD_print.html.

This is an education packet on how to go about teaching animals to kids, it gives examples and topics and what not. I understand that the group I will be working with will be a lot older than the group intended for this pack but I think it will be helpful for me. This can be a building block template for me so I can start very small when it comes to my courses complexity than go from there once I have more confidence in what I've taken away from this. So this is more of an introductory piece for me and less of guidance piece you could say.

"22 Fantastic Ways to Get Paid to Work With Animals." Trade-schools.net. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.trade-schools.net/ca/articles/jobs-with-animals.asp.

This link highlights different job options for people interested in some animal-related careers. Growing up when someone like animals and wanted to work with them the first thing they would go to or be told about was becoming a veterinarian. While this is an amazing option and I myself chose to pursue that option I still wish I was exposed to their option. This link will open more windows for my students.

http://hamiltonzoo.co.nz/assets/Education-resources/Animals-Classification-Teacher-Notes-Activites-and-Worksheets.pdf

This link also discusses and shows examples of the scientific meaning and makeup of different species of animals.

"Classifying Animals." Mensa for Kids. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.mensaforkids.org/teach/lesson-plans/classifying-animals/.

This link simply outlines a bunch of lesson plans that I can build off of and get inspiration from. I am not very good at coming up with certain things from scratch so this outline can help me a lot of navigation wise. I do not intend on using the exact examples within the sheet but I would like to incorporate some of the things they mentioned within it. This link is primarily for my activity portion of my mini-course so it isn't as crucial as the informative links.

The Rom 241 Team. "3 Innovative Methods of Teaching for High School Educators." Concordia University-Portland. April 06, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://education.cu-portland.edu/blog/classroom-resources/3-innovative-methods-of-teaching-for-high-school-educators/.

This link is an informative article that instructs people on the basis of teaching other efficiently. I was very worried in the beginning because I am not so used to teaching people fairly close to my own age. I need to figure out how to input my authority within this group without overstepping but also keeping their respect. This link is more for myself rather than my students I want to better prepare myself as much as possible and with this research, I will be able to achieve that.

Miguel Rivera Capstone

Posted by Miguel Rivera in Capstone · Best · Wed on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 3:22 pm

For my capstone, I focused on self-care. I did this by creating a website that has different aspects of self care like meditation and gemstones. I made the website with research, talking to peers and teachers, and shadowing a dermatologist. At the beginning of my capstone I didn't have a clear idea for my capstone. I figured out my final idea by asking my mentor and other teachers. The capstone process overall was a little stressful because I had to research different careers in the field and the best way to help people. However, I had a good time doing it because self-care is something that I am passion about and wanted to learn more about. I felt that I was about to motiative some people to learn more about their self-care routines and improve my own.

Bibliography

Buttle, Heather. “Attention and Working Memory in Mindfulness- Meditation Practices.”

Institute of Mind and Behavior, Inc. 32, no. 2 (Spring 2011). Accessed January 23, 2019. https://www.jstor.org/stable/i40158234?refreqid=excelsior%3A2dfe62c9e634f2a8e98dd239f59a6d04.

This journal gives a breakdown of how being mindfulness of one’s actions has positive effects. The most interesting part of the journal was how it describes the placebo effect and placebo impact on people who meditate or use gemstones. Some people do benefit from these practices, but others are just believing them and making themselves happier. This lead to thinking about how I am going to talk about yoga, meditation, and gemstones. I came to the conclusion that my capstone should focus on motivating people to do the actions and believe in it. The key part is believing because it could lead to positive effects or have at least a placebo effect. This journal is reliable because it was published by the Institute of Mind and Behavior and it gives references to the studies at the end.

Duhigg, Charles. The Power of Habit. Random House, 2012.

This book talks about how habits are form and ways to build healthy ones. I found this book helpful because it allows me to see that I have to think about rewards and timing relating to yoga and meditation. It is jsut enough to teach people how but make them have a plan on when. The best way to achieve this goal is having cues for actions. An example is meditating in the morning. The cue would be waking up and the reward would be feeling calm. This source is reliable because Charles Duhigg has won a Pulitzer-prize and is a reporter for the New York Times for more than a decade.

Epstien, Mark. Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself. Penguin Press, 2019.

This book talks about ways to think about others and the bigger picture. Reading this book allowed me to see another part of the self-care journey because its focus on ways for people to not only think about themselves. It show me how Buddhism is centered around self-care and getting out positive energies to the world. He went in depth how writing out emotions could be beneficial for some people. It is the best to write with a pen or pencil to feel connected with the writing. This source is reliable because Mark Epstein is a sink and has a medical degree from Harvard. He has study meditation for more than 20 years.

Friedman, Hershel. “Minerals.net.” Ice: The Mineral Ice Information and Pictures. Accessed

January 22, 2019. https://www.minerals.net/gemstone/alexandrite_gemstone.aspx.

This website has all types of gemstones and gives detail about their origin. It is organized by alphabetical order and pictures of the gemstones. Gemstones are something that I wanted to focus on my website. I felt that gemstones can have some positive effects or at least a placebo effect on people. Certain people can be more sure of themselves from certain gemstones or feel more protected. People can feel more conflict starting their health journey with a material object than having to focus on themselves. This website is reliable because it uses other resources and has videos of the gemstones. Also, the website focus on the type of gemstone and don’t directly sell the gemstones.

Harries, Dan. 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress without Losing

My Edge, and Found Self-help That Actual Works: A True Story. London, England: Yellow Kite, 2017.

Dan Harries talks about his self care journey and ways he deals with stress. I found his story interesting because it focus on how an embarrassing moment can lead to grow in a person. Also, he talks about living in a society that overworks and don’t talk about meditation health enough. I found the information about the inner narrator very fascinating because it is something that I felt that everyone has. A voice in your head talking you that you would not be about to do something or try to make you feel bad. This book talked about negative ways to deal with stress such as self medicating or eating unhealthy. I understood that I had to talk about some unhealthy ways to deal with stress.  This source is reliable because it is a biography of Dan Harris and talk about his personal self-care journey. He relates studies on meditation.

Harvard Health Publishing. “5 Ways to De-stress and Help Your Heart.” Harvard Health Blog.

Accessed January 23, 2019. https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/5-ways-to-de-stress-and-help-your-heart.

This website lists five ways to de-stress and relax. I used this website as a jumping point to my research and directing the focus of my capstone. Also, humor was something that I don’t know could help people de-stress. This website leads to thinking about the reasons that people become stress because it talked about not using electrons and disconnecting from the world. That is best to start someone’s self-care journey with small steps like taking a warm bath or listening to music. This website is reliable because it is published by a trusted university and connected to an official report.

Kabat-Zinn, Jon. Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.

Hachette Books, 1994.

This book talks about the importatnt of meditating. It is know as a contemporary class on meditation. I learn about how people’s actions and thoughts effect everything around them. He talked about how social media and phone overall can be harmful to a person. People should take breaks from their phones and take in the world around them. I found it motative the way the author talks about not letting the actions of others effect your mooded. This allow me to see that the self-cares journey are indivual and focus on building oneself up. This source is reliable because Jon Kabat-Zinn is the founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic. He has written other meditation books.

“Meditation: In Depth.” National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. January 02,

2019. Accessed January 22, 2019. https://nccih.nih.gov/health/meditation/overview.htm.

This website gave a break down of meditation and it's positive effects. Through the process of making the capstone, I am going to heavily focus on meditation. This website allowed me to have factual information about meditation and the definite of it. I had a loose understanding of meditation and this website gave me a clear understanding. The video on the website was helpful because it showed me a way to talk about meditation. This website is reliable because it is apart of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services. It has references from research papers and articles.

“NAMI.” NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness. Accessed January 23, 2019.

https://www.nami.org/learn-more/mental-health-by-the-numbers.

I wanted to get statics about different people who have mental health illnesses and their effect on society. This website proved that information. I will use this information to inform people why starting their self-care jountry is important and destregles mental issues. Also, it allowed me to understand that natural remedies may not work for everyone and some people have to constrater meditation. I should explain that decision should be discussed with their doctors and it is okay to do so. This website is reliable because it has all of its references at the end of the website and NAMI is a respected organization.

Ted. “9 Ways to Practice Self-care.” Ted. Accessed January 23, 2019.

https://www.ted.com/playlists/299/the_importance_of_self_care.

This website allowed me to see speeches from indiviuals who are in the meditation or self-help flieds. This videos allow me to see how different professionals talk about meditation health and their interactions with audience members. Also, I learned about different ways for people to de-stress and make self-care fun. That the self-care journey embodies every part of someone’s life. Diets, exercise, and meditation health are all part of someone’s self-care journey and need to be addressed. This source is reliable because it has experts who have degrees in their respected field talk about what they have studied. Also, Ted.com is a trusted organization.

For my Capstone I was given the opportunity to shadow five different working environments. I spent time volunteering at Best Buy, a local garden place, a daycare facility, a thrift shop, and Shoprite supermarket. Each of these places allowed me to think about where I would like to work while going to college. I found that I liked doing hands on work the most. At Best Buy I spent time organizing several items and at the garden place I cleaned different types of seeds to get them ready for the Spring. The daycare allowed me to help young children with what they were learning, such as basic math problems. Shoprite taught me how to stock shelves with different grocery items, while the thrift store had me organizing incoming items, to the correct spaces in the store. I learned most when being involved in the task given to me. If I was provided with more time I would have liked to return to the garden center. It was most interesting to me because I learned about many types of plants and how they grow and survive. It was neat to oversee the process that is involved in planting. If I stayed there for longer I would have gotten to plant the seeds that I cleaned. The shadowing opportunity taught me what it would be like to have a part-time job. I learned that it takes responsibility, focus, and the knowledge that you need to succeed at the task at hand. For example, at the garden center the knowledge of several plants is needed to best care for them. I feel ready to take what I have learned at these places and apply them to what I want to do for my part-time job. When I think about a career, I know for sure that I want to work with game and design. This is what I hope to go to college for. While I am in college I would like to have a part-time job. My part-time job choice would be the garden center. The shadowing opportunity has taught me what to expect if I got a job there. I appreciate Science Leadership Academy giving me this experience to find a job that fits my learning style best.
