Miguel Rivera Capstone

Posted by Miguel Rivera in Capstone · Best · Wed on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 3:22 pm

For my capstone, I focused on self-care. I did this by creating a website that has different aspects of self care like meditation and gemstones. I made the website with research, talking to peers and teachers, and shadowing a dermatologist. At the beginning of my capstone I didn't have a clear idea for my capstone. I figured out my final idea by asking my mentor and other teachers. The capstone process overall was a little stressful because I had to research different careers in the field and the best way to help people. However, I had a good time doing it because self-care is something that I am passion about and wanted to learn more about. I felt that I was about to motiative some people to learn more about their self-care routines and improve my own.

Bibliography

Buttle, Heather. “Attention and Working Memory in Mindfulness- Meditation Practices.”

Institute of Mind and Behavior, Inc. 32, no. 2 (Spring 2011). Accessed January 23, 2019. https://www.jstor.org/stable/i40158234?refreqid=excelsior%3A2dfe62c9e634f2a8e98dd239f59a6d04.

This journal gives a breakdown of how being mindfulness of one’s actions has positive effects. The most interesting part of the journal was how it describes the placebo effect and placebo impact on people who meditate or use gemstones. Some people do benefit from these practices, but others are just believing them and making themselves happier. This lead to thinking about how I am going to talk about yoga, meditation, and gemstones. I came to the conclusion that my capstone should focus on motivating people to do the actions and believe in it. The key part is believing because it could lead to positive effects or have at least a placebo effect. This journal is reliable because it was published by the Institute of Mind and Behavior and it gives references to the studies at the end.

Duhigg, Charles. The Power of Habit. Random House, 2012.

This book talks about how habits are form and ways to build healthy ones. I found this book helpful because it allows me to see that I have to think about rewards and timing relating to yoga and meditation. It is jsut enough to teach people how but make them have a plan on when. The best way to achieve this goal is having cues for actions. An example is meditating in the morning. The cue would be waking up and the reward would be feeling calm. This source is reliable because Charles Duhigg has won a Pulitzer-prize and is a reporter for the New York Times for more than a decade.

Epstien, Mark. Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself. Penguin Press, 2019.

This book talks about ways to think about others and the bigger picture. Reading this book allowed me to see another part of the self-care journey because its focus on ways for people to not only think about themselves. It show me how Buddhism is centered around self-care and getting out positive energies to the world. He went in depth how writing out emotions could be beneficial for some people. It is the best to write with a pen or pencil to feel connected with the writing. This source is reliable because Mark Epstein is a sink and has a medical degree from Harvard. He has study meditation for more than 20 years.

Friedman, Hershel. “Minerals.net.” Ice: The Mineral Ice Information and Pictures. Accessed

January 22, 2019. https://www.minerals.net/gemstone/alexandrite_gemstone.aspx.

This website has all types of gemstones and gives detail about their origin. It is organized by alphabetical order and pictures of the gemstones. Gemstones are something that I wanted to focus on my website. I felt that gemstones can have some positive effects or at least a placebo effect on people. Certain people can be more sure of themselves from certain gemstones or feel more protected. People can feel more conflict starting their health journey with a material object than having to focus on themselves. This website is reliable because it uses other resources and has videos of the gemstones. Also, the website focus on the type of gemstone and don’t directly sell the gemstones.

Harries, Dan. 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress without Losing

My Edge, and Found Self-help That Actual Works: A True Story. London, England: Yellow Kite, 2017.

Dan Harries talks about his self care journey and ways he deals with stress. I found his story interesting because it focus on how an embarrassing moment can lead to grow in a person. Also, he talks about living in a society that overworks and don’t talk about meditation health enough. I found the information about the inner narrator very fascinating because it is something that I felt that everyone has. A voice in your head talking you that you would not be about to do something or try to make you feel bad. This book talked about negative ways to deal with stress such as self medicating or eating unhealthy. I understood that I had to talk about some unhealthy ways to deal with stress.  This source is reliable because it is a biography of Dan Harris and talk about his personal self-care journey. He relates studies on meditation.

Harvard Health Publishing. “5 Ways to De-stress and Help Your Heart.” Harvard Health Blog.

Accessed January 23, 2019. https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/5-ways-to-de-stress-and-help-your-heart.

This website lists five ways to de-stress and relax. I used this website as a jumping point to my research and directing the focus of my capstone. Also, humor was something that I don’t know could help people de-stress. This website leads to thinking about the reasons that people become stress because it talked about not using electrons and disconnecting from the world. That is best to start someone’s self-care journey with small steps like taking a warm bath or listening to music. This website is reliable because it is published by a trusted university and connected to an official report.

Kabat-Zinn, Jon. Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.

Hachette Books, 1994.

This book talks about the importatnt of meditating. It is know as a contemporary class on meditation. I learn about how people’s actions and thoughts effect everything around them. He talked about how social media and phone overall can be harmful to a person. People should take breaks from their phones and take in the world around them. I found it motative the way the author talks about not letting the actions of others effect your mooded. This allow me to see that the self-cares journey are indivual and focus on building oneself up. This source is reliable because Jon Kabat-Zinn is the founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic. He has written other meditation books.

“Meditation: In Depth.” National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. January 02,

2019. Accessed January 22, 2019. https://nccih.nih.gov/health/meditation/overview.htm.

This website gave a break down of meditation and it's positive effects. Through the process of making the capstone, I am going to heavily focus on meditation. This website allowed me to have factual information about meditation and the definite of it. I had a loose understanding of meditation and this website gave me a clear understanding. The video on the website was helpful because it showed me a way to talk about meditation. This website is reliable because it is apart of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services. It has references from research papers and articles.

“NAMI.” NAMI: National Alliance on Mental Illness. Accessed January 23, 2019.

https://www.nami.org/learn-more/mental-health-by-the-numbers.

I wanted to get statics about different people who have mental health illnesses and their effect on society. This website proved that information. I will use this information to inform people why starting their self-care jountry is important and destregles mental issues. Also, it allowed me to understand that natural remedies may not work for everyone and some people have to constrater meditation. I should explain that decision should be discussed with their doctors and it is okay to do so. This website is reliable because it has all of its references at the end of the website and NAMI is a respected organization.

Ted. “9 Ways to Practice Self-care.” Ted. Accessed January 23, 2019.

https://www.ted.com/playlists/299/the_importance_of_self_care.

This website allowed me to see speeches from indiviuals who are in the meditation or self-help flieds. This videos allow me to see how different professionals talk about meditation health and their interactions with audience members. Also, I learned about different ways for people to de-stress and make self-care fun. That the self-care journey embodies every part of someone’s life. Diets, exercise, and meditation health are all part of someone’s self-care journey and need to be addressed. This source is reliable because it has experts who have degrees in their respected field talk about what they have studied. Also, Ted.com is a trusted organization.

Until The Last Moment

By: Miguel Rivera, Raymond Rochester, and Ayala Silverman

INTRODUCTION

In a post-apocalyptic world, the choices you make determine life or death. You only have your mind and fellow travelers to guide you. The year is 2010 and the world is up in flames. The ground you walk on is gray and black. You are in northern America at the beginning of autumn and you’re heading south. You have to make it south before winter starts or else you’ll face certain death. It will be a long and hard journey, but it is the only way that you would be able to survive, at least for a little while.

MANUAL

OBJECTIVE

Throughout the game, you will be on a quest of survival. You will be counting on the food, tools, and weapons that you obtain through gameplay in order to survive different situations. Your goal is to get to the south within 5 weeks, before the start of winter. The game will restart once you reach the south or if everybody dies.

PLAYERS

There will be a Game Master that narrates and directs the game. The Game Master will have the ability to provide the players with events in which they will have to act accordingly. A day will end with the successful conclusion of two events. If players are following the strand form of playing, they would reach the South with 10-13 events.

Players (in a group of at least 2-3) will be guiding their characters through the game’s world. The Game Master and roll of the dice will impact the way the players navigate through the game.

Every player will take a turn and can choose an action that they wish to do. There is the possibility of their action failing based on their die roll. Players will also have the choice to pass on a turn, which can result in a loss of supplies.

CHARACTERS

When making your character you get to choose attributes that will help him or her in certain situations but will also not be as much as an advantage in other situations. Attributes assigned to the characters will affect how they interact with the world around them. This game utilizes character customization: the players will be able to create their characters, including choosing their attributes. Players will roll a pair of 6-sided dice in order to find how many points will be allotted to each attribute. Certain attributes will be beneficial in certain scenarios, while others will have no effect or can even be detrimental. The higher the number a player rolls, the more points they might be able to allot to their desired attribute. Workaround the scenarios of the game master, make the right choices, and survive as long as you can.

DICE & ROLLING

The role of dice in the game will be prominent in two areas: creating your character and determining the outcome of an action. During gameplay, the result of a roll multiplied by an attribute* will be used to determine the result of the event and whether it’s good, bad, or neutral. The Game Master will determine the amount of points needed to get a “good” result before the player rolls by rolling a pair of dice and subtracting that number by subtracting 3. In order to calculate the points needed to pass an action, the player will have to add the number they rolled and the points of the Ability or Attribute that they’re using in the situation.

* check under CHARACTER & ITEMS SYSTEMS for more information

STORYLINE/SCRIPT

-- guide for Game Master

BEFORE PLAYING

The Game Master will give the players a list of items for them to start the game with. Characters have a limit of 3 items*, excluding their weapon. The weapons will be chosen by rolling a die.

* see list of Materials for items to choose from

SETTING - at the beginning of the game

You are standing at the edge of the woods, the road stretches out in front of you, disappearing beyond a hill on the left and stretching into the distance on the right.

LIST OF POSSIBLE EVENTS

  • You see a line of smoke trailing in the sky. You move closer to the source and hear the faint murmurs of people talking.

  • You or a party member becomes sick.

  • You come across a potentially inhabited farmhouse.

  • Food stores are becoming low and there have been no places to scavenge.

  • You are walking along the road when the sky darkens and it begins to storm.

  • You encounter a stranger in the road.

  • You are exploring a potential shelter for items when you hear a noise from another room.

  • Someone steals your backpack, taking your food supply and extra clothing with them.

  • You see someone dying on the road and have all your food taken.

  • The bottom of your backpack rips open.

  • You suspect that someone is following you.

  • A group of people surrounds you on the road.

  • A party member gets mildly injured during the day, forcing you to stop and continue your journey during the night.

  • A party member gets lost.

  • You find an old man on the road in need of food.

  • You find water due unsure if it will make you sick.

CHARACTER & ITEMS SYSTEM

The players will have the opportunity to create a character. Customization includes assigning physical and personality attributes. Players will also be able to choose what items their character starts out with at the beginning of the game.

Food items must be eaten within the lifespan or it becomes useless. Players have to eat a whole item of food or half of two items each third day. They must have one item of food with them at all times. If they don’t, they must find at least one item within the day. Players must drink 16 oz of water in three days as well.

The points under attributes will affect a character’s abilities (i.e. more Strength = better Athletics = able to walk longer). The items that a player decides to bring on their journey will also have the possibility of affecting your ability and attribute numbers, thus changing an event’s outcome.

A player can pick up to 3 Abilities to give to their character. In order to find your Ability points, find the corresponding Attribute and half the amount of points you rolled for that. If an Ability has two corresponding Attributes, combine the halves of both those numbers. In the event that an Attribute has an odd number of points, half the number and round the decimal down.

While playing, in the event that a character needs to use an Ability to help in a situation, it’s up to the player to pick which Ability will be most effective.

ATTRIBUTES

  • Strength

    • Strength measures bodily power, athletic training, and the extent to which you can exert raw physical force.

  • Dexterity

    • Dexterity measures physical agility and reflexes.

  • Intelligence

    • Intelligence measures mental acuity, the strength of recall, and the ability to reason.

  • Wisdom

    • Wisdom reflects how attuned you are to the world around you, representing perceptiveness and intuition.

    • Affected by Wisdom

Value System

The value system for each player is different within the game. The players have to determine how they will survive and actions that they take to get to the end. People can do whatever it takes to get to the end or try to help fellow travelers along the way. Our goal in creating this game is to show how hard it is to survive in a post-apocalypse world and question people’s definition of humanity. This will be a difficult task for many because many players will try to keep their character alive while simultaneously trying to help others. Over time, as players play the game and lose supplies, they will be forced to make decisions to either keep themselves alive or keep their morality intact by helping other travelers. It’s entirely possible (and expected) for the values a player might have at the beginning of the game to change as they continue playing

CONNECTION TO THE BOOK

Throughout the book, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, the skills and knowledge of the father is what keeps him and his son alive. The choices the man makes affected how he and the boy lived presently and in the future, which is just like the concept of a tabletop RPG, such as D&D (and consequently Until the Last Moment). In the game Until the Last Moment, you can't win. You can only survive and have better luck than your co-players, but the end result will be the same for each player -- death. In the book, there is no way to completely escape the deathly world that they live in, which the game is meant to reflect. There is only trying to make things better for yourself, although your luck could eventually run out.

The father and the son were on their journey with the goal of survival on their mind. There were a lot of times where they had to scavenge for tools, food, and sometimes weapons of self-defense. They “had no food and little sleep” (McCarthy 105) for the majority of their journey in the book. This is also a concept replicated in the game. The players will have to make a lot of their own choices as well as react to situations out of their control (like if there’s a storm). The players, like the man and boy, will have to be cautious and think about the consequences of their actions if they wish to survive. They must find out for themselves if they are “carrying the fire” (McCarthy 283).

The game is also based a lot on luck, such as the dice affecting what items and the amount that you get while playing. Similarly, in the book, the good things that happened to them were based off luck. You don’t know how an action will play out in the game, much like in real life and in the book, and the players will have to be prepared in case their luck turns.

TV Time
TV shows are a key part of the development of children in today’s society. Children watch different shows and like different genres of shows. They learn lessons about life or themselves. That people live different lifestyles or have a different point of view than their own. These lessons are very beneficial for children. TV shows are beneficial for children because it allows children to see people face reality and increase their creativity.
Reality shows are stereotyped as “trash entertainment” and many people look down on people who watch reality shows. However, reality shows can be very informational and show different lifestyles. One genre of reality shows that does this well is competition shows such as Amazing Race. Vox stated “Even the contestants’ backgrounds — on Amazing Race and other shows — allow us to consider how Americans differ, from New Jersey to Kentucky to California. Reality shows like Amazing Race and Survivor like to slap labels on the participants (‘the Boston Firefighter,’ ‘the Cheerleader,’ etc.), but the people themselves often defy easy description.” Children need to learn about different cultures to have a better understanding of the world. These shows highlight different cultures and people. This exposure of differences leads to children being more tolerable and understanding of different points of view. Also, it allows children to think about the lifestyle that they might want to live in the future. Children are able to expand their imagination of the future if they are able to watch TV and see a new type of future for themselves that they didn’t previously consider. This show is about people doing rigorous challenges in groups. This teaches children about hard work and how to work with others.
Stress is something that is unavoidable in life. The way that children cope with stress should be something that is not self-destructive or harmful to others. TV is a possible solution to this problem. According to a study by the University of Siena’s neonatal intensive care unit, children feel less pain while getting blood tested when they were watching cartoons even more than maternal attempts at distraction. TV shows are an easy and realistic way for children to cope with stress. Children who can cope with stress are better suited in life because they are able to back away from stress and regroup themselves. Also, the TV shows themselves teach children ways to destress or talk about their stress. Sesame Street has throughout its’ episodes talked about how to deal with stress or talk to children about stress. In a segment of an episode titled “Comforting Children Through Stressful Time,” Rosita talks to Nina about being scared about things on TV. Nina responds “Well, if you see something or hear something that makes you or you (looking at the camera) feel sad or scared, tell a grown-up that’s close to you.” Nina’s advice of talking to someone else a healthy way to cope with stress because it allows children to learn how to use their words to explain their feelings and it shows that it is okay to feel stressed.
TV shows push parents and children to have difficult conversations that they would otherwise never talk about or even push off. An article titled “The Benefits of Watching TV With Your Kids” by Steven Schlozman on U.S. News website showed how one mother had conversations about politics and death with her 12-year-old daughter while watching “Stranger Things” on Netflix. In the article, it states “ … a great story can spur discussion about all sorts of topics big and small; and while a shared television program isn’t the only way to do this, it’s certainly one of the best.” TV shows allow children to ask questions about how the world works. This forces parent to be honest and open to their children. It shows children that asking questions is healthy and important. Parents are able to talk about hard topics such as death before it personally affects their children. The conversation could have a more relaxed tone and children would have some background information about the topic.
TV shows are something that most children watch on a daily basis. Children have different reasons for watching TV. However, they are all influenced by the shows that they watch. TV shows can improve children's point of view on life and themselves. TV encourages children to ask questions and be more open about a different point of views. For this reasons, society should rethink the stigma that TV is only for entertainment and children shouldn't watch shows.

Control is the Key to Any Relationship

Clueless and The Taming of the Shrew

Love and its legitimacy has caused many debates over the years. Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew(1590s) shows how control has more to do with relationships than actual feelings. He shows this through the relationship between Petruchio and Katherine, which involves Petruchio consistently demanding that Katherine change her personality and agree to fictitious ideas just for the sake of saying he could do it. Katherine has to stay with him due to the pressure of the institution of marriage. Amy Heckerling's Clueless (1995) displays a similar relationship between characters Dionne and Murray, as Murray constantly disrespects and invalidates Dionne.

Although Shakespeare's work and Heckerling's film take place three centuries apart, the theme of control is prevalent in both portrayals of romantic love in relationships. In both relationships, the male is seen controlling their partner and showing disrespect. Murray does it by purposefully doing or saying things he knows Dionne dislikes, such as calling her 'woman', to get a reaction from her. Petruchio uses physical and mental abuse to force Katherine into a docile state. Not only does this show how men abuse their power in relationships, but also how women are pressured to stay in these relationships despite being mistreated, as Dionne and Katherine are. Both these texts show how societal pressures cause women to stay in toxic relationships, which in turn instills more power in men causing them to be more controlling.

“Katherine: Now must the world point at poor Katherine; And say ‘Lo, there is mad Petruchio’s wife, If it would please him come and marry her.’”

(Act III Scene II, 17-20)

In this scene, Katherine is waiting for Petruchio on their wedding day. Katherine is telling her father, Baptista, about how she would be unhappy in their marriage if it happens. Petruchio not showing up on time to the wedding was one of the first things that he did to control Katherine and disrespect her. He knows that the wedding day is important to Katherine like many women during this time. Petruchio has power over her if he makes Katherine wait for him. He knows that Katherine would wait for him because she is pressured by her father and society to get married. Also, Katherine is fearful of the public option and how others would see their marriage. She doesn’t want people to think that she was left at the altar or marrying a mad man. In Clueless, Dionne also feels a social pressure to stay with her boyfriend who is not respectful.

In this scene of Clueless, Dionne is talking to Cher about how Murray was constantly paging her over the weekend then Murray walks up to Dionne. He confronts Dionne about not answering his pager and calls her “woman.” The word “woman” is something that Murray knows Dionne dislikes, but he constantly says it throughout the movie. It is a way for Murray to control Dionne and make her feel like she doesn’t has a voice. The use of the word “woman” tells Dionne that she doesn’t have control over his words. Also, the word causes Dionne to have a negative reaction and get upset. Murray enjoys this reaction and attention that he gets from Dionne. Murray knows that he can disrespect Dionne in this way because he is popular and having a popular boyfriend is a status symbol for Dionne like many other girls in their high school. Dionne is willing to handle his disrespectful comments to keep her popular boyfriend. This is similar to the relationship of Petruchio and Katherine because Katherine is also fearful of public opinion and being alone.

“Petruchio: Now by my mother’s son, and that’s myself, It shall ne moon, or star, or what I list, Or e’er I journey to your father’s house. [To Servants] Go on and fetch our horses back again,-”

(Act 4, Scene 4, 7-15)

In this scene, Petruchio and Katherine are on their way to Baptista's house. Petruchio says that the moon is the sun, but Katherine knows that he is wrong. When Katherine corrects Petruchio and says that the moon is the moon, he threatens to take Katherine back home and not allow her to visit her father. Katherine agrees with Petruchio’s claim that the moon is the sun because he has power over her and could control her. If she disagrees with him then she wouldn’t be able to leave their house or see other people. The idea that Petruchio wants Katherine to believe anything that he says, even things that are nonsense, is to belittle Katherine. Katherine is not able to push against his control because it would end with Katherine being abused in some form. In other words, the institution of marriage and public option are forcing Katherine to stay with Petruchio. Petruchio is using these social pressures to control Katherine.

In this scene of Clueless, Dionne confronts Murray about cheating on her. Murray tries to convince Dionne that the hair that she found in her car belongs to her. However, Dionne knows that she doesn’t wear that type of hair. Murray tries to distort the truth just like Petruchio. Dionne, unlike Katherine, has more power in her relationship. This causes Murray to shift the focus on the hair found in the car to inferring that Dionne is moody or emotional because “it is that time of the month.” Instead of making Dionne believe in a lie like Petruchio did with Katherine. This reaction belittles Dionne and causes her to lose focus on the cheating. It rails the whole conversation and Murray doesn’t have to tell the truth. The rails of the conversation leave viewers feeling that cheating is a topic that is not that important. This scene reinforces the norms that “boys would be boys” and an angry woman must be on her period. These social norms create pressure for women to accept the disrespectful behavior of men.

“Katherine: I never saw a better-fashioned gown, More quant, more pleasing, nor more commendable.”

(Act 4, Scene 3, 106- 109)

In this scene of The Taming of the Shrew, a tailor makes a gown for Katherine, but Petruchio doesn’t like the dress. He says that the dress is ugly and not in style, but Katherine loves the dress and wants to wear it. In the end, Petruchio doesn’t allow Katherine to wear the dress, but he pays the tailor for making it. Petruchio wants to control everything about Katherine down to her clothes. He wants Katherine to be codependent on him causing Katherine to change her personality. She changes from being strong and independent to being obedient and passive to Petruchio.

In this scene of Clueless, Murray and Dionne are at a house party. Dionne is running around for most of the party trying to find Murray. When she finds Murray, he is cutting all of his hair. He doesn’t let Dionne know about it. Murray is controlling Dionne by changing his image. He takes one of the most important things that Dionne cares about the public image by cutting his hair and embarrassing her. A bald head is something that Dionne doesn’t find cool or popular. Murray is cutting his hair two weeks before picture day. Murray shows Dionne that he has all the control in the relationship by cutting his hair and that he doesn’t care about the opinion of Dionne. This is similar to the scene with the dress and Katherine because it shows the male in the relationship taking away something that the female in the relationship wants. Petruchio takes away a dress from Katherine and Murray takes away a good image from Dionne.

In Clueless, the relationship of Dionne and Murray is toxic because of the controlling actions by Murray. Control is also the main reason for the toxic relationship of Petruchio and Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew. The idea that works three centuries apart can have very similar relationships shows that audience throughout the ages can relate to controlling relationships.

Best Personal Essay Ever- Spread My Wings & Fly By: Miguel Rivera

Posted by Miguel Rivera in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 10:09 am
SHOW MORE

I always wanted a job for the same reason that most people want jobs, for money, but I never knew how much you would have to do for $7.25 an hour. From the countless numbers of wings needed to be sauced to the progress of cleaning the flyers know as filtering. I have done many summer projects, varying from taking classes to volunteering, but Wingstop was another beast. A hungry beast wanting my energy and time. Wingstop is a fast food franchise with its main food item being bone in and boneless chicken wings. I worked the one on Aramingo in Philadelphia and I dislike working there. I don’t say hate because I have been able to find light in the darkness such as having somewhat flexible hours. I dislike Wingstop as anyone who has worked in fast food before. The fast past and little pay of fast food is something I think few people would enjoy. Everyone I know says who worked in the fast food industry says they learn so much, but they don’t talk about the struggles of working. The countless hours on your feet or the lack of tips that people give. They are blocking those unpleasant memories of doing bone aching work and only remembering how you learn about to make unhealthy food in less than five minutes.

The worst part of the job is dealing with rude customers. I can’t remember the countless times customers feel the need to argue about mistakes they have made like wanting to change sauces last minute or ordering the wrong thing, saying the cashier misunderstood them. Sometimes, they had young children or grandchildren ordering food and wonder why they don’t get boneless chicken instead of classic. However, I shouldn’t complain much because I got the job without doing much. I got the job on June 10, 2017.

“Hey, Thila wants to talk to you about the job. Meet me at the 25 bus station. So we can go together,” said Sabrina over the phone.

“Okay, thanks!” I answered. I was on my way home from school. It was a breezy Wednesday. My sister, Sabrina, has worked in Wingstop for about a year now and she went to high school with both the manager and assistant manager who are sisters. I have met the assistant manager, Alondra, one or twice, but we don’t talk much because my sister doesn’t like me talking to her friends.

I was nervous about meeting Thila, the manager because I never had a job before and I wasn’t sure what she would ask. I thought about all the typical questions that may be asked like “why do you want the job?” or “what is one of our weakness?” My sister told me that it was a sure thing, but I still had to put my best foot forward or at least show-up.

“Hey, this is my brother,” said my sister passing Thila to go into the kitchen to clock in.

“Hello, nice to meet you,” I answered with my shaking hands out to Thila.

“Nice to meet you,” answer Thila.

I sat down on the light brown seat in the front of the store. The store is small and in a weird location. It’s filled with Tv’s all turned to sports event channels: football, baseball, and tennis, but I don’t see soccer. I never understood how people could be entertained by the repetition of sports. The constant kicking or throwing of a ball into something seems so boring to watch. There were barely any customers in the store. Thila looked bored and facetiming with someone on the phone. The store is “aviation-themed” from the propeller on the side of the cash register to the photos of pilots covering the walls. The walls are covered in green and a dark off-white color. The green reminded me of the green from Ben 10. I don’t remember much from the “interview” because I wouldn’t call it an interview. Thila said something along the line that she was tired and just gave me the job as a cook. I started training the following Friday.

“Are you high?” asked Mark as he pulled the red lever in to stop the oil from moving.

“No, I’m not high! I just need more time to figure this out” I said.

I could feel all my nerves tremble in fear as I hold the metal hose pouring hot oil into the fire’s fryer with old rubber gloves. I could only think about the numerous times I have spilled soup, water, and other liquids on myself, but never oil. I fear how the hot oil could burn my skin and leave Wingstop mark on me for life. I also felt like I was performing an act that I don’t know to a nagging audience of one who surely doesn’t help me but those feelings to go away. Mark was mad because I don’t completely empty the fryer with oil before spilling it with oil. I know it may sound bad, but it was an easy mistake to fix. You would just have to pull the red lever down to stop the oil. My face turned red and I lose the need to try after that question. I wanted to shake the nerves and do a good job. However, I allow Mark to take away my confidence and cause an emptiness in my stomach like the feeling of going down a roller coaster. I felt embarrassed.

Many months have passed since I got hired, about seven months to be exact. I’m was earning $7.50 an hour and still dislike my job. The job was more mindless repetitive at this moment than a nervous adventure. The shifts seem like endless cycles with an unstopping amount of customers. The cycle was sauce chicken, clean, and repeat until the end of my shift. I have learned a lot of things in those seven months such as how to balance school work and a job, how to train other people, and how to deal with annoying customers. I now understand why many people say you learn so much from working in the fast food industry. The most important thing I learned is I’m ready for something new and better. So, I quit on January 5, 2018.

“I have to quit because I have to focus on school.”

“ I understand. When you are right to come back. Let me know,” answer Thila with a face of sadness.

We were in Thila’s office in the back of the store on a cold Friday night. It was a small room with white walls with papers all around. I had to quit because I needed to let go of the job to open myself to find another. I understood that I would not be able to find a new job while working at Wingstop because I would not have time or energy. However, I don’t tell her the real reason I quit because I thought it would be disrespectful to tell her that I am leaving to find a new job. I also wanted to keep my options open if I was unable to find a new job. A job in retail or anything not having to do with making food. I am grateful that I had worked at Wingstop, but it is time that I spread my wings and fly.

Not Just A Game

Posted by Miguel Rivera in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 2:03 pm
Games are a key part of the development of children. Children learn what is right, wrong, fun or boring through play. For many families, playing a traditional game is just a way to pass the time.  However, many of these games have hidden messages or themes and are meant to reflect the values and traditions in a society. One of the most frequent themes is that of capitalism, which is utilized to justify the U.S.’s capitalist society. Through what is made to seem like innocent child’s play, children ingrain the workings of the class system into themselves before they even truly understand it.In the root of all children games, the purpose of the game is to manipulate other players to lose so that the child can win. This includes manipulating other players to do the wrong action. For example,  in Simon Says the leader manipulates the other players to do the incorrect action.. Winning is only beneficial for one person and has to negatively affect others. These games normalize the actions of people in the real world and how manipulation is often used to ‘win’ against others by financial means, such as tax evasion or not paying undocumented workers. The people being manipulated are people who don’t know how to play the ‘game’, such as those who don’t know the ‘rules’ to the game. This mindset allows people to be more inclined to justify and understand the actions of the manipulators because someone has to lose for someone else to win.
The representation of many games show people of color as villains or less than white people, such as the game ― Cowboys and Indians. The name of game itself is already problematic because it politically incorrect-‘Indians’ is referring to Native Americans, a common and age-old misconception. The game makes the players who are playing “Indians” to hide from the cowboys. This follows the narrative of Native Americans being victims against ‘cowboys’, and sugarcoating the event of the mass genocide of Native Americans through a game is a clear example of perpetuating stereotypes and American values. In other words, The game is used to justify the rise of the United States and desensitizes the history of capitalism in the United States. A game similar to Cowboys and Indians is Cops and Robbers. Cops and robbers is also used to desensitize the idea of police brutality by having the “robber” always be shot at and killed due to being assumed as guilty. Today, we see this behavior continue with police and prisons; the outcome of police shooting is normally in favor of the police and doesn’t have a neutral point of view.
Money and status also play an important part in most children games. In Monopoly, players win by having the most money and property out of all the players. The game shows a connection to the value of capitalism, which says ownership and money is the key to a successful life. Also, the game gives everyone a chance to ‘spin the wheel’, symbolizing how in capitalist society everyone is given everyone a chance to financial growth which is an equal and fair system. Therefore, people who don’t succeed in this society are at fault by their own choices. This idea can be seen in other games such as The Game of Life, and Payday. In the Game of life, players are showed life is mostly about making money: everyone and everything has a cost. The cycle of life in the United States to provide for a family, then retire. The cycle doesn’t allow people to enjoy things in life such as traveling or take trips due to having to make money for a family or yourself. The cycle is one of the values of capitalist society. It says that money is the key to a happy life because it allows people to buy what they want and provide for a family.
Childhood is a sacred and important time. It is a time to learn and explore the world, but some of the games cause us to shorten our view on the world and ourselves. Messages like these should not be taken lightly. It is important for parents to understand that the games their children are playing are not just games but examples of real life. They are the building blocks to the actions and decisions they will make in the future. For America to move beyond its capitalist mistake, it has to try to highlight teamwork and fairness in children's games.

E2 U6- Patakí (Mac y Apple) Por: Kimberly, Miguel, Jahan & Zoey)

Posted by Miguel Rivera in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · D Band on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 9:29 am

Estaba decidido a recuperarlo.

This mural is located at 1531 West Girard Ave. It was completed on October 1,2004.  It is called "A Celebration of Poetry." Presta honores al viaje del poeta afroamericano.  Mural Arts Philadelphia stated "Beginning in Africa, the central placement of two strong women – one pouring water into the ground, and the second playing a musical instrument – starts the poet’s path. The trek winds on through the cotton fields of America, and then rises to the corner where blues and jazz musicians are playing. The journey culminates in the present day with a poetry reading, inviting passersby to sit and listen for a while. Woven within the vibrant colors are phrases from six different poets, highlighting both the imagery and the words that are so important to a poet’s life."

Me brindan mucha alegría

Somos Dominicanos

Somos Latinos.

Hablamos Español

Hablamos con plátanos y Sancocho

Pero somos Americans. Vivimos en América

Somos una familia mezcla de culturas
