For this quarter I created from recreating a piece of artwork to photo editing. I recreated two types of flower, cherry blossom and a read morning glory flower. In the photo editing I used photos when I went to Venezuela. I got pictures of myself with the background with the sky on top of The Avila mountain in Caracas. I also have a picture of my uncles because they perform for the people, and tourist that go there. The important source is being observant of what you are trying to do because you can’t just do whatever. Well for my experience I need to be observant to recreate something or take a good picture. I used snapseed to edit my pictures, and it’s a very useful app because you can select points in the picture to make it better in that point you picked. Also my phone was a good tool because it has cropping pictures and adjusting brightness.

My preferences is editing pictures to submit a work if you need to take a picture because you can edit the brightness, contraction or anything else. The material I prefer is color pencils and markers because markers are great to mark lines and coloring in with color pencils. I did learn a new technique, using the projector to copy a drawing. It’s the best thing ever because you can be a skilled drawer or not and still us it  it’s so helpful. I didn’t use special tools this quarter but I learn about a eraser that is used to decrease or blend a drawing. The studio time was spent productive even if it wasn’t art, I would be doing work from another class after I was done my artwork.

My important thing happen was communicating with the teacher because if I was communicated with her I wouldn’t been marked late. I try my art pieces  to connect with me some way, the photo editing was about me and my country Venezuela and my uncles that have been there for me and trust. The artwork is from an anime I used to watch and my uncle has a cherry blossom flower tattooed on him so that inspired me. When I chose my own painting I wanted to do something from my childhood so I did Mickey Mouse and the gang when they were babies.

Julia's Q2 Art

A lot of the art I created in this quarter were different versions of art from the same assignment. Namely, these were 10 blind contour drawings, 10 blind contour drawings with color, and 10 versions of a picture of a chicken I took on a road trip to Plymouth through different filters. Two more pieces of art I made were a recreation of The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh and an illustration of my interpretation of the Parting of the Red Sea. I also painted a picture of the sky, but I didn’t have enough blue, so I used purple, red, and a bit of green. This is why I named the painting “Improvised Sky.” I come up for inspiration for art the same way I come up with inspiration for stories: they can pop into my head at any time. I could just be minding my own business, when suddenly an idea hits me.

I used my same strategy of drawing a rough draft in my sketchbook, and then making the good copy on a separate piece of paper. I still prefer colored pencils, but using paint can also be fun. I learned that experimenting with different filters and frames on the same photo can make two completely different and really cool. An example of this is using the night vision filter and the film frame to make a scene of a chicken in a documentary filmed at night, and using the monochrome filter and the old photo frame to make an old and somewhat spooky black and white chicken picture. I still use a sketchbook to draw out rough drafts and ideas.

I spend my studio time working on my current art assignment, or on something else if I’m already done. I learned that you don’t have to draw something to make art, you can just have some fun with a few photo filters.

Maren Lamb Quarter 2 Art Slideshow and Reflection

Final Artist’s Statement

The first project we were given this quarter was to do ten blind contour drawings. I did these in pencil on copy paper. It was really challenging for me to keep my eyes off the paper when I was drawing and really feel it out as far as spacing and texture. I had never done blind contour drawings so it was really strange getting used to it, but once I did, it was really fun. The second part of our first project was coloring in our blind contour drawings. I had a really good time with it, and I spent way longer than I should’ve filling everything in. I used colored pencil on certain paintings and marker on others. Both looked great but I liked the effect of the markers better. I used a lot of colors in every picture, but for each one, I liked to stick with a specific palette. One tiny annoyance with adding color to the drawings was that the pencil would smudge and mix with the color.

The second project we were given this quarter was to paint anything we wanted. I decided to paint a beachscape because I promised my classmate Thea that I would make her one to hang on her wall. My paint of choice was watercolor, and I got watercolor paper from home to use. I didn’t really use a reference. It took me about two class periods, and the only challenge I faced was trying to get the right color out of the murky watercolors in the pans. The third project we were given was to recreate a piece of art. I recreated two works by Henri Matisse, Goldfish and Portrait of Madame Matisse. I begun with Goldfish, and wanted to use oil pastels, but found that there weren’t many at school, so I worked on both projects at home. I really like the effect of the oil pastels in lieu of paint. My works are not exact copies of the paintings; I just kind of did a rough sketch and got to work. The only downside, in my opinion, to oil pastels is they can get very messing, and I did my best to try and make everything pretty clean.

The fourth project we were assigned was to make an illustration based on a piece of writing. I immediately knew what I wanted to do. I chose a lyric from She’s Gone by Hall and Oates: Think I'll spend eternity in the city; Let the carbon and monoxide choke my thoughts away, yeah; And pretty bodies help dissolve the memories; They can never be what she was (was) to (to) me. This stanza has always formed a certain picture in my mind for me so I decided to paint it. My materials of choice were a small canvas I brought from home and acrylic paint. I made a sketch of what I wanted the painting to look like on looseleaf and translated it onto the canvas, after painting a background layer on. I was kind of pressed for time painting it and it did not come out how I wanted, especially given what a specific vision I had before. It didn’t quite catch the mood of the song, and I couldn’t use exactly the right colors. So that was pretty frustrating. The fifth and final project we were assigned was to edit photos showing depth of field. I used Snapseed to edit my photos. I think some of them came out better than others because they lent themselves better to Snapseed’s lense blur tool. I also played around with the pictures’ lighting and color. It didn’t take long to edit each picture, so I was able to do a lot of them.

An Artist's Statement

I made mostly drawings this quarter with colored and graphite pencils, with some charcoal and pastel on the side. My source ideas usually came from either movies I loved or music I loved. On of the big techniques I used to create my art was the idea of even shading with bold colors. My favorite medium for art is my pencil on some paper, the less color the better. This quarter, I learned how to draw a piano! I only used pencil and charcoal in order to make it, but it was super messy! Most of my class time was spent working on these drawings, so I could relax later. Something cool about the week 7 and 8 assignment was that I actually have a hobby to take my favorite songs and draw them the way I see them. This was one of the easier to plan assignments for me! My artwork is open to interpretation, but speculation on what my artistic choices could've actually meant are welcome! P.S., be sure to wear something you don't care what happens to for charcoaling. I learned that the hard way. :)

Quarter 2 Art Work

Posted by Mia Concepcion in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 12:22 pm

This quarter for art class I created blind contour drawings, a watercolor painting of my choice, 3 different versions of a recreated painting, a watercolor painting based off of a song lyric, and 5 different edited photos. In order to make these art pieces, I gained inspiration through my favorite artists and musicians. For the recreated paintings I was inspired by one of my favorite artists, Georgia O’Keefe, and recreated her white irises painting. For the illustration based off of a piece of writing, I was inspired by one of my favorite musicians, Noname, and pulled my artistic ideas from her Telefone album cover. I also consistently visualize a distinct lavender color when listening to Noname’s voice and songs, so I used this idea for a color to use when creating the background of the painting. For the blind contour drawings with color, I used either warm or cool colors for each drawing, to represent the duality of human emotions. For drawings that seemed more somber or serious, I used cool colors. With happier or more positive drawings, I used warm colors. Another design concept I used was movement, because each blind contour drawing showed pencil strokes that were in a constant movement.
Although I enjoyed using both soft and oil pastels for my recreated art piece, this quarter I favored watercolors. Painting with watercolors has become my preferred art material. A technique I do enjoy while using pastels is blending, specifically with soft pastels. I learned even more this quarter that oil pastels really have to cover every inch of surface in a drawing, even if you have to blend in some areas with white pastels. During this quarter I used paint brushes, watercolors, thick watercolor paper, copy paper, markers, colored pencils, soft pastels, and oil pastels. I used paint brushes for transferring the paint onto the paper, and I used the paper as my background and surface for artwork. The watercolors, markers, colored pencils, soft pastels, and oil pastels were used this quarter as my art mediums for creating art. I utilized my studio time throughout the quarter by using each art period to complete the art assignments that were due. I even completed some of the deadlines ahead of time, because I worked hard to complete my art in class. Overall, this quarter included a lot of fun art assignments that allowed me to use my creativity and also strengthen my art skills even further.

This marking period in art, created multiple projects. They include: a ceiling tile, a fall wall hanging and a self portrait.

For the ceiling tile, I️ wanted to create something that meant something to me. When I️ was younger, I️ immigrated form then Dominican Republic to the United States at the age of 3. I️ left my younger brother and my mother behind and lived with my older brother and father and we all shared one TV. One of my oldest memories are of me watching the show Care Bears. I️ took that as inspiration and painted a care bear on my ceiling tile. I️ used acrylic paint.

For my fall hanging, I️ drew a cartoon of Minnie and Mickey Mouse, my favorite characters as a kid. They were picking up acorns besides a tree. I️ crumpled up green pieces of paper to make the top of the tree look more realistic one would say. To tie my work all together I️ a book like joke and when you open the piece of paper the answer to the joke was inside. I️ wanted to include many different parts to make my work as creative as possible.

The last piece of art we worked on this quarter was our self portrait. For my self portrait I️ decided not to use color. I️ too I️ more simple route and sketched myself, adding more details on my eyes and hair, which was meant to highlight my two favorite features about me.

As this school year progresses, I️ would like to work on trying to express myself through art, to a point where I️ wouldn’t even need to explain myself, people would already know what message I am trying to convey.

Q1 Final Project

Posted by Ethan Larrabee in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 4:26 pm

For my ceiling tile, I used a mix of several acrylic paints to create a muted background and then painted the design in black. The hardest part about this was getting the mixture just right and that took almost an entire class period. I couldn't really decide what to paint, so I just used a drawing in my sketchbook. It depicts a sad crow boy sitting underneath a dead tree.
For my fall wall hanging I drew a possessed scarecrow in a moonlit cornfield. I used pencil for the line work and colored it with colored pencil. To give it a sort of darker look, I decided to leave it rough instead of cleaning it up and inking it like I originally planned (and totally not because I ran out of time).
For my self portrait, I decided to once again go with the rougher style and used mostly pencil and a bit of charcoal to give myself a disheveled appearance. The little guy on my head is supposedly a representation of my darker thoughts. This was drawn on 18x24" paper.

Q1: Art Slideshow

Artist Statement

Ceiling Tile:
My source idea for this piece was the core figure. Once I had drawn the female at the start, the idea for an acrobatic design followed. The biggest challenge came from choosing the right colors for each body part and item of clothing that was involved. Each body part had to work together for the idea of consistency and elegance I was trying to maintain. I learned that two colors one did not expect to work together might come through for you in the clutch. I used a simple pencil, colored pencils, and an eraser for the draft. Later, I used paints and paintbrushes for the final version. All of my studio time was used developing this. Remember that art is never perfect and something can always be done for improvement.

Fall Wall Hanging:
I used food as the base for this piece. I was really hungry when I started this one. I mostly worked with shading and perception for this one. How one sees the pumpkin was important to me for this. I wanted to make it look good enough to eat. I used only colored pencils for the shading which made this piece look more authentic in my opinion. I learned that certain materials are better than others when it comes to making something look real. Most of the time was spent researching what a real pumpkin look like and which ones look the tastiest and look drawable. Authenticity is greatly appreciated and valued for me.

Self Portrait:
The most important part of creating this piece was my face and having a reliable way of looking at it while I drew. I used my tablet's glass surface when off to draw myself. It was a bit unorthodox, but it did the trick. I find I prefer to pencil draw complicated things first before going over it again with more permanence. I learned that if you let it, charcoal will get everywhere, and I mean everywhere. And I did use a lot of charcoal for this piece. I don't use it usually, but it was great at bolding the lines on my face and showing the boundaries. I spent my time in class mainly modifying what I drew to make it more accurate. I found that I am better at drawing glasses than I thought.

Q1 Artist's Statement and Slideshow

Final Artist’s Statement

I made three art pieces this quarter. The first one was a ceiling tile painting. I used acrylic paint to create it and a number of different brushes. My final product was an image of a lizard and croissants. The process for the ceiling tile was long and stretched over a bunch of class periods. First, I sketched out a bunch of ideas on paper, making sure they were to scale. In order to reach my final design, combined two of my initial ideas into one. I chose the lizard and croissant design because I draw lizards a lot and I wanted to do one large scale, and because croissants are one of my favorite things to eat. Then I prepped my tile with a background, a pink and blue gradient. Now I had my final design, I opted to use that as a guide but draw the sketch directly on the panel in pencil without using the projector. This was partly because I was a little short on time. Then I completed the painting over two class periods. I really had to squeeze it in, unfortunately, and I feel like I could’ve done a lot better.  Overall, I really like working with acrylics because they paint on quite smooth but they’re not thin either, and they’re really nice for mixing.

My second piece was my fall wall hanging, and I made a bunch of paper characters hanging from a metal rod. We had about two weeks to do it, and I really feel like I maximized that time. When we got the assignment, I knew immediately what I wanted to do. I started up drawing my characters with pencil, inked that in with pen, and finally colored with markers. Then I cut them out, glued them to construction paper backing, taped them to string, and tied the string around a painted dowel. I really love halloween so my characters were all spooky creatures. I really liked this assignment because I could incorporate my drawing style and the sort of thing I like to draw. It was also done in one of my favorite mediums, marker. If I had more time I would’ve put the drawings on both sides so when the strings made them spin around it wouldn’t be a problem.

My third piece was my self portrait. We had a lot of time for this but I’m not sure I really maximized it. I made a couple of little sketches  based on photos of me to get what I wanted it to look like, and then began to draw in pencil on the big paper. Pencil’s not my favorite medium because I feel like it is pretty annoying to get a dramatic difference in value out of it. My portrait includes a bunch of plants to really fill up the paper, and I really like the look of it. If I had given myself  more time, I would’ve made the portrait more accurate, it looks more like my mom more than it does me.
