Literary Lens English Benchmark

Penelope:

The collaboration in our group could have been better. We should have recorded earlier and their where a few-falling outs between our group members. At some point it became stressful because either someone was not willing to record or willing to contribute to the project. No one wanted to take the leadership role in the project, and at first our group ran into a few technical difficulties.  However, in the end we quickly worked together to produce an okay video. I contributed to the project an edited video, and analysis to the Feminist lens. For the video I used live-game footage, actual comments from players using these lenses to better help the audience understand the game itself.

Micah:

First I researched the Marxist Lens. Then I set up and filled out the storyboard. Next was the writing of the script, which I helped write and edit, and finally there was the acting. I contributed a lot of time and effort into these, but it wasn’t really high in group collaboration. We each worked on our separate tasks and tried to complete them as well as we could, and we did well, but the group didn’t interact that much.

The pinnacle of the group work was the actual filming of the video, Everyone kept to their tasks really well, and though it took us a little time to get started, it was rather simple once we had got it going. Our group gathered itself quickly after every take and learned from its mistakes in order to improve for retakes. We held our composure well even though we were in a crowded hallway. I honestly didn’t think that we’d get the project done in time, but the cohesiveness of the group allowed us to finish quickly.

  1. I agree with the analysis through the feminist lens about girls being sexy in the game. I think that also these appearances appeal to different audience because the market for games is kind of ruled more by males who like women and seeing them glorified for their bodies. (that might have been already mentioned)
  2. I think after watching this video I can now take note of all the video games that portray women a certain way in comparison to men.
  3. I think this connects to other video games like Tomb Raider (first thing I though of)
  4. I ike your sense of humor in this video, and the glasses props.

1) I do agree with your analysis because I have never seen a video game in where there isn't female characters being overly sexy. Female characters are dainty and feminine and need the help of male characters and that showed through your video.

2) After watching this video, I seen the world differently because it showed that all video games generally force women to be considered as sexual objects. It just made me realize the lack of respect that women have in the real world.

3) It connects with every other video games and lots of movies.

4) Good Job with connecting your everyday lives! And it was cool to see all the game aspects.

I do agree with the analysis, especially the first one because I do notice that the female characters are always the least clothed so this was a good point to point out.

It didn't push my thinking because I have already noticed this. It was just confirming my belief on how female characters are portrayed in video games nowadays.

This reminds me of mortal kombat because they constantly over expose the skin of all of the female characters.

I like how creative they were with creating their project and using actual lens to view each situation with.

I disagree. In LoL, 8 of the total ADC is female, 6 is male, 2 is some animal and 1 is some sort of undead. Also included in the 8 Female ADCs, there are something the community calls Hyper ADCs. One of which is Tristana who has the longest auto attack range of all ADCs and can easily sweep a whole team. Tristana at full build can do 1200 damage per second. Even the strongest Tanks can go at most 5000 HP, if the armor decreased the damage (depends on value) about 300 damage. So, 1200 - 300 it is still 900 damage per second. A tank can be brought down in 6 seconds.

No because I know more about their topic then they do.

None since there isn't really anything like this game.

But I do like how they did do a good share of research for their project on a game that only 1 of them plays.

1) I agree with your analysis. The world protrays women like this in many ways. But the game does show that women are more powerful accroding to that specific game. 2) After watching this video it made me realize a lot about how men look at females. 3) This doesn't remind me of anything really. I don't recall watching anything that is sexist towards women. 4) Showing actual video games made it stand out more.

  1. Most definitely do I agree with your analysis! Sexism is obviously a major part of LoL; it's quite realistic too. A lot of the world thinks that women should be treated as sexual beings.
  2. It didn't push my thinking, because I felt that way, but it gave me more passion for exploiting things like video games for what they're really about.
  3. It reminds me of Carmen Electra and how she's always made up to look sexual. If she were too fit into this video, she's be one of the woman fighters.
  4. It was colorful and humorous!

  1. Describe how you agree or disagree with their analysis. If you agree, add a few sentences extending their theory about their text. If you disagree, use the lens to produce an alternate analysis of their text.

I agree that female heroes in video games are oversexualized, but I think they do not need to be sexualized at all. At the end of the video, they talked about playing a better game and they chose GTA IV. I understand the shots they chose were for comedic reasons but this game is just as bad as other video games in terms of how women are portrayed.

  1. Did this video push your thinking at all? Did it encourage you to look at the world in a new way? Explain why or why not.

No. I've already noticed this in video games. It was nice to see it from a specific video game, however, nothing actually pushed my thinking on the topic.

  1. What other book, film, movie, TV show, etc. does their project remind you of? How could you apply their analysis to this other text?

It reminds me of that movie with Michael Cera where the entire movie was his life as a video game, as I recall the girls that changed when preparing for combat actually did change into some sexual outfits.

  1. What shout-outs do you have for this group and their project?

It was hilarious! You guys did a great mix with this and pointing out important points. Great job guys.

1) Their analysis was how in the games the women are portrayed and weak but attractive. They barley wear any weapons compared to the men and have big boobs that give unrealistic expectations. 2)It did push my thinking of how I should compare the women compared to the men in video games 3) This reminds of of my old game wwb smackdown 4)Shout out to the great video quality and effects!!!

  1. I agree with your analysis. The cost of a lot of video games is so extreme and often times people won't take you seriously as a player unless you have as much as possible. I have also seen many people who want to earn as much as possible just because they want to.

  2. This video made me consider video games through the marxist lens. Although I have definitely heard about looking at video games through the feminist lens I never though about the money that goes into these games.

  3. This reminds me of all kinds of different games. There are an immense number of situations where women are over-sexualized as well as situations where it seems like you need money and objects (even if they are objects on a game) to be respected.

  4. I like that they used actual glasses when discussing the lens. That was interesting.

  1. Describe how you agree or disagree with their analysis. If you agree, add a few sentences extending their theory about their text. If you disagree, use the lens to produce an alternate analysis of their text.

I completely agree with their analysis within the video. They talk about how video games often make female characters into very sexual and overly exposed characters. This is seen through the outfits that the characters are forced to wear.

  1. Did this video push your thinking at all? Did it encourage you to look at the world in a new way? Explain why or why not.

this video did not really push my thinking very much, although it did when it came to it's use of the marxist lens.

  1. I agree with you that the woman are portrayed to be not realistic in these video games. I like how you provided the images and actual game in action because I wasn't familiar with it if you hadn't provided it.

  2. I think it exposed me to another view because I never thought of applying the feminist lens to a video game before seeing this video. I can now see how video games depict women in these games now that I've been exposed to them.

  3. I think their analysis is very specific to video games and a gamers perspective so I think it would be difficult to apply it to other mediums.

  4. I like new idea of applying the idea to games instead of a movie or show. Very unique!

  1. I agree with the analysis. I seen women look like that a lot in video games but never thought anything of it. The lens opens my eyes towards how it portrays the image of women.

  2. It has pushed my thinking because after watching this, I thought about how men are portrayed in video games in women - they always are dressed a certain way, and have to do manly things. but why?

  3. I compared this to the mario game. He is the main character and as a man he has to defeat all these battles, why can't a woman do that?

  4. I loved how everyone passed around the glasses.

  1. I agree with this analysis. Although I've never heard of this game before, the evidence you gave supported the lenses. It surprised me that although women are seen as 'weaker', you'd think they'd have more armor, but they show way more skin because of sex appeal.
  2. I totally started thinking about other games and role play stuff that portrays women as weaker and less important. 3.This reminds me a lot of other games like this that portray women as 'healers' or 'sorceresses', never actual people in battle.
Molly Olshin (Student 2015)

1) I totally agree with your analysis. I have never heard of or played this video game before, but with the helpful clips you showed from it gave many examples of how women are being portrayed as being generally weaker than men. Even the voices of the female characters give off a bad vibe; the voices of the characters are very high pitched and soft, when the male voices are really deep and "masculine", which can lead to people thinking that all women have this girly tone of voice and are weaker than men.

2) After watching this video, I definitely began to think about characters in other video games and cartoons. Because things like video games and cartoons don't have real actors, the creators are forced to create characters. By creating characters, they have a chance to make female characters be as cliche and feminine as possible, which can create controversy when viewing these things through the feminst lens.

3) This video project reminds me of a lot of different cartoons and video games, like I said above. Basically shows that are animated and the designer of the characters chose to make the female characters look really sexual, and which unrealistic bodies.

  1. What shout-outs do you have for this group and their project? I really like that you showed clips from the game. It made it really easy to physically see what you're taking about. It was really helpful and showed many examples of the lens's you were referring to. Good job.

I do agree with your analysis and how they over sexualize female characters on the games. They only had one stripped down male character compared to like 20 female characters. This video didn't really push my thinking because the first female character I saw, I automatically thought of how they were being over sexualized. It did help me look through the world in the new way, that our whole world, men are in charge and women are seen to be inferior. This reminds me of every anime video game, they over-sexualize the female characters and make them seem inferior. I enjoyed, the glasses to show the literal form of looking through the "Marxist & Feminist" lens.
