Marcus Burrell Capstone

http://https://docs.google.com/document/d/12_OjNVpn9s7voYpQi7-syrW6C1zIholO5K3u2aWhZlI/editMy capstone was completed as of may 18th. Another student and myself hosted the first ever SLA Ultimate frisbee clinic where we taught new players and JV players how to play the sport. Passing down our knowledge and what we have learned to them. You could say it's like we are going to continue playing through them after we graduate. The whole point was to prepare them for the future and make another championship run and continue the great name that the Rockets have created. As well as spreading awareness about the sport. People hear the name and immediately think it's something dumb or soft, until you actually play the sport. It is probably one of the hardest sports to play aside from athleticism. The amount if skill and brain power needed for this sport is incredible and does not receive enough credit. More people should be out playing Ultimate and that is exactly what we tried to encourage. The clinic was a huge success as kids left the fields with smiles on their faces. Honestly, there is no greater joy than playing Ultimate Frisbee for Science Leadership Academy.

The Fire Within

Posted by Marcus Burrell in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 10:05 am

“Get yo ass up! Let’s go,” Luke yells. “I told you about sleeping all day. It’s 10:30 in the morning. You ain’t that tired.” Ashton wakes up while rubbing his eyes.

“It’s only 10:30,” he replies. “I don’t care. I said get up,” Luke says. Ashton’s father walks down stairs to the kitchen to make his cup of coffee. While he leaves Ashton throws the covers off of him and begins to get ready for the day. “And get dressed. We're going to get our haircuts today,” Luke yells up the steps to Ashton.

They both get in the car and head off to the barber shop. During the car ride there is nothing but silence between the two with the sun shining through heating up the leather on their skin on this very hot summer day. Luke pulls over to a donut shop for a bottle of water and iced tea and returns to the car.

“Which one is mine?” Ashton asks.

*chuckles*

“They both for me,” Luke responds while laughing. After they finish their trip to the barbershop Ashton goes straight to his room and closes the door.

“Why was I cursed with him as a father?” Ashton says to himself. “All he does is treat me like shit. I don’t get it. I don’t.” As Ashton continues to talk to himself, his hands begin steaming, after a while his whole body. “What is going on? Smoke? From where?” Ashton wonders. “I’m sure it’s nothing.” After he completes some homework, Ashton falls asleep.

“Hey Ash, dinner is ready,” Marley says. “Woah why are your eyes so light? “They never were before.”

“I just woke up,” Ashton replies. That happens to a lot of people. Here I come now.”

“Here’s your food. Oh my god why are your eyes so bright,” Barbara asks with an alarmed look on her face.

“Mom that happens to a lot of people when they wake up from a nap. I was pretty stressed out with the homework too and I think some of the hair from the haircut may have gotten in my eyes,” Ashton replies with a stern look on his face.

“I know you wasn’t up there crying?” Ashton dad Luke says jokingly. “yo. Don’t forget you have the chores tonight and them dishes better be cleaned right because there was shit still on them yesterday,” Luke says to Ashton without making any eye contact.

“I didn’t even have to do the dishes yesterday. Marley did,” Ashton replies with a confused look on his face.

“I don’t care who did them yesterday. I’m telling you now to make sure they cleaned. Matter a fact, hurry up and finish eating so you can start them now,” Luke responds. Now having an attitude with his father, Ashton decides to continue to eat his dinner at his own pace. “What did I just say. Hurry up and finish your food so you can do them damn dishes,” Luke says.

“Luke calm down. Let him eat his food. The chores will get done,” Barbara tries to calm Luke down as she begins to see his frustration with Ashton.

“See every time I tell the kids to do something you always have something to say about it,” Luke responds.

“I do not.” Barbara now begins to get angry with Luke. “You over there rushing him to eat so he can wash dishes. If it’s bothering you so much, why don’t you clean them? He shouldn’t have to rush and eat because you want him to do some damn chores. He can enjoy his food like the rest of us.”

“No mom he’s right. Let me stop enjoying my meal and go do  these dishes even though I didn’t dirty any of them. Excuse me,” Ashton stands up.

“That’s what your want to say out your face? You can do the chores for the rest of the week then since you want to be a smart ass,” Luke says while smiling. Trying his best to keep his anger under control and to himself so he won’t get into even more trouble, Ashton quickly walks over to the sink. Both his sister and mother go upstairs as they prepare for bed and get ready for tomorrow since the week was beginning again. Luke walks into the living room and watches tv.

“I swear I hate him so much. Who gives a fuck about these stupid ass chores,” Ashton murmurs to himself. While washing the dishes his hand begins to smoke again, causing the water to heat up rapidly. He takes his hand out and bangs it on the countertop forgetting his dad was still down stairs. *Bang!* when Ashton pounded the countertop with his fist, a burst of fire flashed from under his balled hand.

“What was that?” Ashton thinks to himself. He slowly picks his hand up to check for any burn marks.  “Fire? Why didn’t that hurt?”

“Aye!! What is all the noise in there?” Luke yells. Luke gets up and walks over to the kitchen.

“You in here crying again?”

“No,” Ashton replies, but doesn't look up at his father.

“Then why does your eyes look like that? And why is the trash still in here. That’s apart of the chores. You see its full. Take it out.”

Ashton continues washing dishes since that was what he was told to do first.

“What did I just tell you to do?” Take this fucking trash out.” Luke grabs Ashton and pushes him at the trash. “Why are you so damn hot? You sick or something?” Luke quickly pulls his hand back from Ashton after feeling his hot skin. “probably because you got this water on too high. Turn that shit down. Take that trash out.” Luke walks away and heads upstairs. Ashton remains on the floor. Palms on the ground. His eyes turn a bright yellow and his arms begin enlarging. He groans, as he tries his hardest to hold in his anger and rage towards his father.

“He’ll pay for this. This…...This humiliation. I’m supposed to be his son, but he treats me no better than this trash in front of me.” Ashton says to himself. Ashton begins taking deep breaths as he tries to calm himself down, knowing that he still has the chores to do and he needs to get to bed. “One day,” he says. “One day.”

“Ashton you’re late. You know what that means,” Ms. Greene tells Ashton.

“But it wasn’t my fault. The train was stuck at a stop for about 15 minutes. What was I supposed to do?” Ashton responds.

“Whether it’s your fault of not, that’s 2 points off of your grade. Be here on time next time so you can now turn your 69 into a 70,” Ms. Greene adds.

With all of the class eyes and attention to the conversation that Ashton and Ms. Greene were having, Ashton feels a little embarrassed considering the fact that everyone knows about his struggles in english class. He races to his seat next to his best friend Kutcher.

“Don’t worry about it man. I’ll help you if you need it.” Kutcher says as he tries to reach out to his friend.

“No. At this point I don’t really care and if I can’t do it on my own then maybe I deserve to to fail. I’ll figure it out,” Ashton says.

School is over and the boys just get off the bus and begin walking towards their homes.

“Hey Ash. Seriously, if you need anything just let me know. You know I’m always here for you. Look at me man. Is everything alright?” Kutcher tells him.

“Yea. Everything is fine and I know. Thanks. I do appreciate it.” Ashton tells Kutcher as he walks off and turns down the block to his house leaving Kutcher.

“Something isn’t right. I know it isn’t.” Kutcher begins thinking to himself. “It’s probably because of what happened in class today, but that wasn’t all that big of a deal and Ashton wouldn’t let something like that get to him so easily. Maybe its his dad. He always tells me the problems he has with him. That has to be it. I’ll wait and see how he is doing tomorrow.”

“Kutcher! Kutcher come here.” Ashton pulls Kutcher aside before they both enter school. Before Kutcher could say a word. Ashton begins speaking again. “Ok. Something weird is happening to me and I don’t know how to explain it. Yesterday, When I came in the door, of course that bastard starts yelling at me again for the dishes not being washed good enough and he claims that I did not sweep at all last night because the floor wasn’t spotless. I had enough of it. I was fed up with all of his shit so I exploded. I began cursing and yelling and I just felt so much anger building up. My dad grips me up and throws me against the wall and punches me a few times. He tells me to go to my room and not to come out. This where it gets weird. I was so angry I felt like I was getting hot. And I really was. I noticed there was smoke in the room and it was coming from me. I could see it off of my hands. Just as I became worried I overheard my dad talking about me to his friends, so I got angry again. That’s when it happened. Fire was coming off my hands. I quickly ran to the bathroom and put them under water. It was weird cause as I was doing that, my hands started hurting. They didn’t hurt when they first caught on fire, but when I put water on them it did. What should I do?” Kutcher stands there for a moment in disbelief.

“Dude. You have fucking powers man. That’s awesome. I wish I could turn into fire,” Kutcher says with excitement. “Come on, let’s talk about this in class.”

Ashton and Kutcher both approach the table where they eat their food, making sure they are away from everyone so they can discuss what has been happening to Ashton. “So can you control it?” Kutcher asks.

“Uhm I don’t think so. It just happens sometimes. I notice it only when I get angry.” Ashton replies.

“Maybe it only happens when you’re mad. Get angry so I can see.” Kutcher suggests.

“I can’t just get angry. Let me see if I can push it out. Come over here.” Ashton grabs Kutcher and takes him to a secluded area.

“Ok. Here goes. haaaaaaaaaa!” Ashton begins to yell and push as hard as he can to get the fire to erupt inside of him. Kutcher begins to laugh.

“Dude you look like you’re constipated and the shit is like right there but it won’t come out.” Kutcher begins to laugh.

“Really man? See I was trying to be serious and show you something,” Ashton begins to walk away. Kutcher continues to laugh

“Ard man calm down. You should have seen your face though. It looked so funny from my end. You looked like Goku from Dragonball Z or something,” Kutcher says while laughing.

“Wait a minute your eyes do look a little red from the….. (Kutcher pauses for a moment) oh never mind that’s just redness from when you were screaming and pushing like you had to shit.” Kutcher begins laughing again. “Come on. Let’s get your silly ass to gym class. It’s dodgeball today.”

“Alright class. I hope you are all prepared for class today because we are playing dodgeball. I’m going to split you in half and who ever is on your side is on your team,” The gym instructor splits the class in half into 2 different teams.

“Hey look who’s on the other team,” Kutcher looks in the direction of a group of teens and points. The group begins laughing at both Kutcher and Ashton. One of the girls whispers into the ear of one of the boys.

“I will. Don’t worry about that.” The boy says.

“Alright the game is about to begin let’s go. We don’t have all day,” Mr. Lou yells. “On your mark….get set….dodge those balls.”

Mr. Lou blows his whistle and the kids race to the balls. Everyone starts to run around with balls flying everywhere. Ashton and Kutcher catch a few and throw them back.

“Hey Ash! Come closer to me. Let’s work together!” Kutcher suggests.

“I got you Kutcher.” You know who I want to hit, Jason.” Ashton turns his attention to Jason and begins eyeing him down with balls flying everywhere forgetting all about Kutcher’s plan.

“Ashton, where are you going?” Kutcher loses sight of the game and gets hit in the face by Jason’s girlfriend Letisha.

“Oh that bitch. She hit Kutcher!” Ashton begins dodging balls as he shifts his attention to Letisha. He throws a ball with all his force at her. Jason, with a ball in his hand deflects Ashton’s ball and together they throw their balls towards Ashton. Direct hits as the balls hit Ashton in his face and head. Ashton falls to the ground grabbing his head. Jason, along with his friends began pelting balls at Ashton while he’s down.

“Hey hey hey! That’s enough. He’s out already.” Mr. Lou yells. “Are you alright son.”

Mr. Lou grabs Ashton’s arm as he tries to help him up.

“Yea, I’m fine.” Ashton tells Mr. Lou.

Mr. Lou quickly pulls his hand back from Ashton’s arm. Ashton picks his head up slowly as he looks up at Kutcher on the sideline. Kutcher notices Ashton’s eyes are a bright yellow.

“Holy shit,” Kutcher says to himself.

Ashton pushes Mr. Lou back to the bleachers and stands up with his arms three times the size they were before along with his body steaming. He grabs a ball and throws it at one of the friends. The ball is released with such force that it knocks the guy back a few feet. The class is stunned as everyone noticed the fire tailing from the end of the ball. Ashton grabs more and throws them all at the group. Becoming more enraged his hair catches fire and his arms begin to grow even more. The class scatters with fear. Letisha and Jason exit the gym holding hands.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Ashton says.

With his enhanced speed he runs and grabs a ball and throws it through the door catching the back of Letisha’s head. She quickly drops to the ground without moving a muscle. Jason continues to run.

“Jason, you’re next.” Ashton continues to chase Jason while laughing hysterically as he closes in on him with each step.

“Dodge this!” Ashton jumps into the air and throws the ball with all his might at Jason. The ball hits him in the back and Jason drops to the ground.

“How do you like it. I hope it hurts. It still doesn’t make up for all the pain you caused me over the years. Get up.”

Ashton grabs Jason and holds him against the wall.

“Why won’t you look at me? You never had that problem before, Jason.”

Ashton begins to chuckle. Ashton’s body begins to flame. He drops Jason and breaks a whole in the wall as he tries to escape the water from the sprinklers above.

Just as he leaves Kutcher runs up to him.

“Ashton! what the hell man. Is this what you were talking about? You can turn into fire?” Kutcher asks with a concerned look on his face.

“Yea Kutch. This is it.” Ashton’s last words to Kutcher as he blasts into a sprint leaving the ground where he once stood on fire.

Ashton is no where to be found for hours. He finally arrives home after his outburst at school.

“There he is. I was calling your phone. It’s nine o’clock. Where the fuck were you.” Luke begins to raise his voice as he stands up.

“I had a long day ok,” Ashton tries to go upstairs.

“Uhm where are you going? Bring your ass over here,” Barbara yells.

“No calm down Barbara. Don’t even get mad at him. He wants to stay out late, let him. He doesn’t live here anymore. Get your shit and get out,” Luke says.

Just as Ashton reaches for his book bag, Luke grabs it first.

“No no. This mine. I paid for this. Just leave since you want to be disrespectful and only do what you want to do.” Luke pushes Ashton towards the door.

Ashton grabs his father’s hand and pushes it back.

“Who the hell-” Just as Luke was talking, Ashton turns to his parents and bursts into flames. His hair is on fire. Even his eyes become flaming.

“I’m sick and tired of this. You think I’m disrespectful. I’ll show you disrespectful!” Ashton says.

Ashton blasts off the door and lets out a loud roar with fire coming out of his mouth. He pounds the ground repeatedly causing the porch to cave in as fire blasts from around him. He walks into street throwing fire balls at cars and the sky.  He stops and stands in the middle of the street and lets out another loud scream with a fire vortex forming around him, lighting up the night sky.

“Are you happy now dad?” Ashton shouts as he begins to laugh with an evil smirk on his face. He takes one look back at his home and sees his sister Marley standing on the sidewalk. They lock eyes and at that moment, Ashton begins to cool.

“Marley get over here!” Luke grabs his daughter and pulls her back in the house. “That’s not your brother anymore. He’s a monster.”

Ashton overhears his fathers words to his family and he begins to flame again.

“I don’t care if he’s on fire or not. He’s still my brother,” Marley says with a tear sliding down the side of her cheek.

“What kind of freak are you?” a man says as he stops at the top of the block in his car, astonished by what he sees in front of him. Ashton’s anger begins to take over his decisions as he charges at the car at full speed. He launches himself into the air and jumps down on the car, leaving nothing but blackened metal, a blackened man with fire surrounding him.

*Knock Knock*

“Ashton? Dude what is going on? We been hearing weird noises lately. Like explosions.” Kutcher says with a worried look on his face.

“I know. I did them. look.” Ashton’s hands and hair catch on fire. “I just came here to say goodbye man. I can’t stay here. Not like this”

*Police sirens*

“Back away from the house and keep your hands up!” The voice on the megaphone says.

“I’m sorry Kutcher.” Ashton takes off into the night leaving destruction in his path.

Police knock on the door of Ashton’s house.

“Ma’am, we want to do a DNA test on your son. We need to figure out what he is so we can stop whatever it is that is making him like this,” The detective says.

“Yes, of course. Here’s his mouthpiece.” Barbara hands the detective Ashton’s mouthpiece.

After a long discussion about the whereabouts and actions of Ashton the detective finally leaves.

*Barbara begins crying*

*Marley begins crying*

“My son. What has happened to my son.” Barbara drops to her knees. Marley comes to comfort her with tears running down her face.

“we’ll get him back Barb. Don’t worry,” Luke says.

*Knock knock*

“Mr. and Mrs. Brown. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions pertaining to your son?” the detective asks.

“No not at all.” Barbara says.

“Ok we found that his skin cells have a yellow ember around them and are enlarged. How was your pregnancy with your son?” The detective asks.

“Luke, that explains why his eyes were always yellow. As far as my pregnancy. I did smoke with him, but so have a lot of mothers.” Barbara responds.

“Did you eat anything particular with him?”

“I did eat a lot of spicy foods. That’s what I craved with him. I couldn’t help it. We were also in Death Valley because of my husband’s job at the time and Ashton was born on the hottest day of the year.”

“Well there it is. While inside of you his body must have adapted to all of the hot temperatures he had to endure during your pregnancy. I guess as he grew, the cells became more advanced and now he turned into this. When did you guys first notice any weird changes?” The detective ask.

“Oh I know. When I told him he had to come eat that one day his eyes were yellow and the room was a little foggy.” Marley says.

“When was this Marley?” Luke asks

“Oh about 2 days ago. He seemed mad when you guys came back from getting your haircuts,” Marley adds.

“And then the loud bang when I asked him why was he crying. His eyes were yellow then too. Then he turned into fire when he came yesterday when we were yelling and screaming at each other. I think it’s triggered by his anger.” Luke comes to realization.

“So it was you who did this to my baby. You're the reason why he’s so angry?” Barbara begins to stand up.

Barbara begins yelling and screaming and starts to cry once more.

“We need to find him and get him back now!”

“We will do whatever we can to bring him back Mrs. Brown.” The detective reassures Barbara as he heads out of the door.

Barbara runs upstairs to her room and slams the door.

“Daddy, will we ever get Ashton back?” Marley asks with a concerned look on her face.

“I don’t know Marley. I do not know.” Luke says as he places his hand on Marley’s shoulder. She quickly pulls away and runs upstairs. She enters her room and slams the door. She sits at the foot of her bed staring out the window.

“Where are you Ashton? Come back,” she whispers and she closes her eyes.

A flawless Lit Lens

Posted by Marcus Burrell in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 12:48 pm

Reflections

Molly:

I contributed in brainstorming general ideas for making our video. I also added my thoughts to our analysis on the feminist lens, how the song we chose relates to this lens; as well as helped without the storyboard. Lastly, I  recorded myself reading a paragraph from our analysis, which i'm the most proud of. I'm most proud of my contribution in recording for the video because I will usually do anything to not have to show myself in the video. No specific reason why I do this, but i'm proud I got over it.

Maggie

While working on this project I found that I was able to contribute with a fair amount of equality. I feel that I contributed most on the actual analysis. I was able to come up with good ways of looking at the video through the feminist lens especially. However, I am most proud of the work I contributed while we were brainstorming. Although our project didn’t have a particularly new or interesting theme I felt that I was more able to express ideas than I have been in the past. Our group worked well together and we found ways to use what we had.

Ray

I think my largest contribution to the project was suggesting the song, “Flawless.” Along with that, I was able to give creative ideas and write things such as the introduction and conclusion. An accomplishment I had was letting go of some control. Usually, I like to lead group projects, but I decided to not “take control” and let someone else do it. It turned out great because I saw some really amazing leadership skills from my project partners. My group worked well together; we had good communication and fair treatment.

Marcus

My biggest contribution to the project was creating a part and editing the video. It was a bit stressful and tedious since i ran into multiple errors and I had to recreate the flawless video since we could get the actual video anywhere. My accomplishment working within this group was sticking to the plan and making sure I always had something to do and staying busy even if it was hard to find work. We all worked so well together getting our parts done and turned in on time. We all communicated well and did what we all said we were going to do.

Long Lived Love

Posted by Marcus Burrell in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 10:56 am

The taming of the shrew portrays that marriage is about control and the male has full control over the female and has to play the more dominant role in the relationship. Romance is nothing but a myth and love doesn’t exist within these relationships. Same as Tim Story’s “Think Like a Man.” Men have certain goals when it comes to relationships with women. In both of these cases, there is no such thing as love, it is only trick that helps someone get what he or she wants out of a relationship.

Think Like a Man was based upon a real book. The main focus of the movie is well, to act like a lady, but think like a man. It's to help women get inside the minds of men and understand what they want, but use that against them to really get what they want. Throughout the movie Cedric, Jeremy, Zeke, Dominic, and Michael all want simple things in life as a man and they are all just looking for that one woman who will please them and accept everything they want out of a relationship that they want. The women who end up with these men Mya, Kristen, Lauren and Candace are all looking for Mr. Right to finally come along after they all have been through pointless relationships. Encountering these men they feel as though this time they will finally find the right guy. There’s a new book that’s being talked about everywhere, but it was first premiered on Oprah’s show introduced by steve Harvey. He began to give insight on the operating system of a man’s brain to help women understand them and get what they want out of them. Throughout the movie the men and women experience ups and downs dealing with situations that are very relatable to today’s society based on love.

The very beginning of the movie Cedric (Kevin Hart) is narrating and talking about heterosexual relationships and how things were leading up to this current time. He began making comments about young boys and the stages they go through when it comes to women. When they're finally full grown men, a man has certain needs that need to be pleased sexually. He mentions how in the old times Women wanted marriage before anything. “Marriage was the only way to get sex.”

Act one Scene two

In “Taming of the Shrew” the men desires weren’t always to get sex, but in some cases it was to be wealthy, or wealthier. Petruchio was a wealthy man and wanted more money.  “I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; If wealthily, the happily in Padua.” SInce Katherine was wealthy, she was the perfect candidate to be Petruchio’s wife. The only way he could get what he wanted was to marry her.  In that time marriage was the Only  gateway To get what men wanted out of their women.

Another moment that happened towards the beginning of the movie, Domonic fell in love with Lauren who is a very wealthy woman and makes 6 figures and has a lot of stuff going for her already. Domonic on the other hand doesn't have much going for him, but he has dreams and aspirations that he wants for himself. Lauren does not know this until after she sleeps with him. She thought that since he chased her down in a jaguar sports car that it was his when he really was valet parking for another gentleman. She wants someone with money and success like her.

Act three scene one

In this scene Petruchio showed up to Kate and his wedding in rugged clothing expecting Kate to still marry him regardless of his looks. Looks aren’t everything his opinion. Everyone was so against his wearing and questioned his decision making. Biondello said to Petruchio, “Not as well apparelled as I wish you were.” This quote can be used in the viewpoint of Lauren. Dominic wasn’t well dressed enough for her. SHe want a man that was just as well dressed as her and Dominic wasn’t that man. Until she realized later on that he was. He may not have had the fancy clothes, but she knew he would in the end and even if he didn’t he was still a great man to be with.

Love is just a form of possession and that possession is never applied to anything. It’s a way to convince people in relationships that what they are doing to these people for their own selfish reasons are ok. Love is nothing, but a myth and in today’s society this has been a big issue not only for adults, but it’s for teens as well.

I have learned many interesting and life assisting things throughout this years English class, but one of the things that will stick out to me the most is the language that I have learned coming into this year and leaving this year. Like I have my language has grown with me, and it has shown through my work and not just in English class, but also in other assignments that require me to write or express myself. With the help of Mr. Block and his English class, my growth has shown in my work. Here are some examples in which my writing has shown growth from now compared to the beginning of the year and my previous years as a student.

Language evolves within a person. As a class we were just heading into our poetry unit and I wrote a poem about my stuttering. A line from my poem that stuck out to me or really shows how I've grown is like a butterfly I fell as if I'm encased in steel. I feel like that was my language in the beginning of the year, trapped. Now that I have grown, my language has as well and it has broken out of its steel shell that it was encased in becoming this very elegant language that it has become which I am proud of. This is just one of the ways my language has evolve over the years.

Another example where my language has evolved along with me is in my Language Autobiography. I expressed my difficulty dealing with language itself. Since I am a person that stutters language is not really said to be my friend. In the autobiography I compared my stuttering and everyone else's speech to mine. I said "I’ll try to keep at my own speed by switching lanes and letting everybody go past, but it’s hard. My brain is a sweatshop. All of the work it has to put up with and the only reward is knowing that you’re living to do it all again the next day." This describes how I feel everyday. My confidence has risen since that moment. Which shows the growth and the evolution of my language and myself as one.

These 2 examples will always be the main part to my evolution with my language. This is what started it all. From me coming out of my shell to actually using the new language that I have achieved. Not overcoming my speech problem, but just knowing how to use it now it one of the abilities that I have acquired in my evolution of language. I am thankful that all of my hard work that I have done this year and all of the assistance that I have received from Mr. Block and Ryan as well. Without them and the projects that we were given, language would not have evolved the way it has inside me.

BM Reflection

Posted by Marcus Burrell in Geometry - Thompson on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 2:58 pm
This project relates to the real world architect wise. This is the type of stuff they have to do in order for buildings to make sense and go along with the neighborhood.

The most exciting part was just going outside to look at the buildings because it was just nice to be outside doing work instead of inside. The least exciting was the drawings, it was a lot and I don't like drawing

I learned that height of buildings can be determined with measuring the building itself. To me that's pretty amazing

The battle within

Posted by Marcus Burrell in English 2 - Block on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 11:58 am
For as long as I can remember, I have been in a battle with Language. For most of my life Language has won. I have been asking people for help with my struggle, but in the end this is a battle that I will have to win on my own. There was one point in my life where I was ready to give and let Language win, but running away from my problem wouldn’t have helped. Only way to overcome my fight against Language is to accept it and beat it.

One way to tolerate my struggles with Language is speaking differently when I’m in certain environments. When I’m around my friends everything seems to move faster where saying everything in one breath is up to speed, but pausing every now again to catch my breath and make sure I’m fluent, is too slow. I try to ignore the speed of today’s language, but it is as if he’s screaming at me, rushing me every chance he gets by increasing the speed of those around me.

“Hey Marcus” Sieanna says while waving.
“Hey Sieanna.” I reply
We both lean in for a hug.
“What class. Were you coming from?” I would say.
“We had block. We just had a work period though so his class was cool.” She would reply.
“The whole. Class? He didn’t... teach or anything?” I would say in response.

I’ll try to keep at my own speed by switching lanes and letting everybody go past, but it is hard. My brain is a sweatshop. All of the work it has to put up with and the only reward is knowing that you’re living to do it all again the next day. When I’m in my speech class I speak at a more slower and relaxed pace and my speech tends to be more fluent. I may only stutter a few times, but for the most part I’m very smooth in my talking. My heart's not beating fast, and I’m comfortable. I think the reason that happens is because of my speech teacher. She expects for me to stutter and since she already knows it’s less pressure. Besides, if I didn’t then I wouldn’t need to go to speech class. I do change up not just the speed of my voice, but the way it sounds. Most of the time it’s natural. Especially when I’m with my friends, It sounds a little different from when I’m talking to my family or talking to adults.

“Marcus, go take out the trash, you see that it needs to be changed.” My mom would yell.

“Oh my gosh. I didn’t even know that the trash was like that. Besides, everyone else that’s in this house noticed that the trash was full, but yet I’m the one that gets yelled at. Y’all all got hands, y'all can do it too.”

I would mumble to myself as I’m taking out the trash. I was angry and to myself which caused me to be more fluent when I was mumbling.

I notice that I rarely stutter, if at all when I’m talking in a rhythm (singing/rapping). I have noticed that, that may be my key to taming my language problem. I tend to talk really fast and that is one of the problems I have because it pertains to my stuttering. If I can slow my breathing down and talk in a very subtle rhythm, then my language problem should decrease. Holding out certain vowels and sounds a little longer than normally, that should help. The only problem with all of that is remembering to do those techniques. it’s easy to say all of these things, but it’s another to do them. That is like another mini battle to go along with the war that going on with my vocal cords and Language. The way the technique will work by forcing more air out of my throat because that’s where the problem occurs, also inside of my stomach. Stretching everything out and it eases the tension that builds inside of me. When I sing or rap to a song I never stutter. I would sing a Drake song or rap Meek Millz and I don’t stutter. Even if I talk the words I still have the rhythm in my head which keeps me at a steady pace which prevents me from stuttering. It won’t necessarily prevent me from stuttering, but it will ease some pain. Mr. Kay also does this when he recites his poems. He has what I like to call a “poetry voice.” He gets a certain rhythm when he speaks. The words and sounds are held a little longer and it seems to help because he told me that he has never stuttered one time while performing a poem.

Language also attacks me physically. If we are going around the room and I have to read something aloud to the whole class or just speak in front of them, I tend to get nervous. My hands will get cold, my heart will beat fast and I yawn. It’s like my whole body is in a fight with language as well as my mind. It is as if my body is trying to distract itself from what the problem is by having all of these other things going on, but in the end my defense is broken and my struggle with language begins to set in and I begin to stutter yet again. One time in Mr.Block’s class he told the class to read aloud the quote that we used for our chart that we had to complete for hinduism. My table was the second table to read aloud and the closer it got to my turn the colder I got, the more I began to yawn and the faster my heart began to beat.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Marcus Burrell in World History - Block on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 6:39 pm
Opening Paragraph: In history class we were talking about the keystone pipeline that will help transport oil throughout the country. We discussed the benefits and problems that the pipeline can cause. Mr. Block assigned us a project about the pipeline. We had to create a monologue along with a video to showcase our understanding about the pipeline through a different perspective other than you own.

Hurt and Confused:

I can’t believe this. Now I know I’m not in the best shape, but I’m still going on. I have been for the past 2,012 years and more. I feel just fine. People keep saying that I’m going to die. When I was 2,000. Now I’m supposed to die in december at midnight. I can’t die then. My birthday is January 1. That’s way too close to the day where the world celebrates me. I think my insides are mad at me. The little people that live in me wants to put a pipe in me, yea I know what goes on down there. Then the pipe that’s gonna be inside will be 1,700 miles long, only  to pollute my insides, causing my breath to stink. I don’t want that. Not to mention that pipe will hurt, but if I fight back would good will that do. No I shouldn’t do that Mercury. I love myself too much. What Saturn? No that’s a dumb idea. Look you guys I get why they're putting this pipe in me. It’s not specifically for me, it’s more for my humans, you know the little people that I carry around. They need this and I am willing to sacrifice my health for the benefit of my humans. I just don’t understand. All of the resources that I provide for my people I just didn’t think they would need this contraption. Shut up Pluto, you’re just mad that you aren’t considered a planet anymore. You’re nothing. Always having a hostile attitude. Technically I wasn’t the one who said you weren’t a planet, my little people researched you. That’s beside the point. I need help with this pipeline thing that’s going on. How about you Mars, what do you think I should do. It seems like you used to have life on you at some point in time. O. That’s what you think. So there’s nothing I can do huh? I get it. If this is what they want then this is what I should agree to. I understand. I just hope that this is the right choice that myself and my people are making.

Happy sailing:

Children come on, we gotta go.( Begin to pack up twigs.) (Point) I overheard those men with the yellow heads talking. They said they were going to cut down this whole area for this pipe to come through here. ( Whisper to self)Why would they do something like that? Just knock down our homes. Then again I do get why they are adding this pipeline. At least we’ll get more oil and My country will, be in even better than what it already is. We could even sell some of the barrells and get even more money, but  (talks to kids)We’re going to have to move towards new jersey now. There’s other homes around there. you’re wasting time come on. It’s ok I know it’s you guy’s first time flying long distances, but you’re going to have to try. We’ll take breaks along the      way. We’ll stop and look for worms too. I promise. Hurry up. They’re starting up that machine. Come on now, we don’t want to be one of the last one’s leaving. We have to keep up with the rest of the family. You have to be kidding me. Look we’ll stop for bathroom breaks on the way there. They were having some convention about protecting all of our homes and habitat, but as you can see that’s not happening. No I’m serious. Why do you think I’m in such a rush? It was short notice. Apparently this rule has been around since 1917. The United States and the United Kingdom came to this agreement. No I didn’t hear this myself. It just made sense ok. I did believe it at one point, but I don’t anymore. We’re about to lose our house now come one before we get left behind.(Fly away with children)

Tar Sands vs. Shoe:
Awwww not again. I’m so sick of being put in this stuff. Its just nasty, like old oatmeal. Lace!, Lace! can you hear me or are you double knotted. You got messed up too, huh? Yeah, I thought so, that tar sand is real nasty, and its all over. Lace, can you believe that this is the stuff that will be in our clouds and our atmosphere. I know Lace, it’s unbelievable. We can’t stop this, we’re just shoes. Our only soul purpose in life is to be the sole. We protect people’s feet and that’s it. That’s right, we can change the world by stopping the keystone pipeline, here’s my plan. First we’re going to wet ourselves, so when so when they put us on they will be uncomfortable so they can’t pollute our air with co2 and other nasty gases. Yeah, that sounds good to me we should do it lace. We out!!!

Apendix:
An act was passed to protect destroying animals habitats between the U.S. and the United Kingdom
The pipeline is 1,700 miles long
Habitas will be destroyed for the pipeline
The tar sands give off Co2 wich pollut the air

Descriptive Essay- Learning Lessons

              Final Descriptive Essay

It was 3 years ago. The middle of summer in July. My family had took a trip to Virginia where we will spend our first day at Kings Dominion. After about 3 hours inside the park, we decided that it was time to check into the hotel where we will be staying at for the 4 remaining days. On the second day we decided to head down to the indoor pool after breakfast, after waiting at least an hour. Surprisingly no one was there. The long rectangle said four feet at both ends of the pool and then in the middle was the number 5, indicating that the pool was five feet deep in that particular section. The only people in the water were me, my sister, and both of my cousins. Everyone else was sitting in chairs at one end of the pool, talking. My sister gets out of the water because she begins to have problems with her ears, due to the water. When my mom is done treating her ear problem, my sister approaches the water, but doesn’t get in. She begins to run around the edge. “Girl! you better stop running before you fall in.’ My mother shouts. “I won’t.” My sister replies. While my sister was disregarding her warning, she slips and plummets into the water. She began splashing around and instantly panics. She resembled a fish out of water except she was in the water. My mom then gets up slowly, walks over to where she was “drowning,” lifts her out of the water and brings her to the chair that she was sitting in. Everyone begins laughing. My sister never realized that she was never drowning. Water had splash in her face when she fell in, which made her think that she was drowning. She was about 4’8 at the time and she was standing up in the part that was only four feet. She didn’t know that she wasn’t drowning. The water splashed in her face. The part that made it funny was at one point she actually squatted under the water, got up, and walked around with her arms in the air. I would have helped her but I thought she was faking.

School had just let out. Me and my sister were getting off the bus on a sunny afternoon about a week into spring. Our red summer uniform shirts shimmered on and off as we pass the shady areas that the trees long arms were providing. As we began to get closer to our house with my key in my hand I suddenly stop. My hand acting as a hand brake as I put in the middle of my sister’s chest. “Don’t move.” I whisper. A beast appears with a stick in its mouth, piercing yellow eyes and a black coat on. The stick drops from its mouth and at that very moment my sister takes off running down the street. The beast runs past me and heads after my sister. Down the street my sister runs, arms looking like noodles as she flails them in the air waving them back and forth while her back juggles her pink book bag and everything inside. I didn’t know what to do, I  just stood there frozen as if spring rewinded back to winter. The animal then turns off and runs away, as if someone had called it. My sister then turns the corner still running, eyes ahead and arms still in the air, not knowing that the animal had forgotten about her. I run after her screaming her name. “Simone!” When I finally catch up to her and calm her down, I am greeted with screams and punches. “Where did you go?” she yells. “I told you not to move.” I responded. “Do you really think I’m going to stand there with that dog in front of us?” She replies. I nod in agreement. “Well come on, we still need to get into the house.” I said hoping my sister’s bravery would grow. As were walking back up the street my sister picks up a stick. “This is for that dog. If we see it again, I’ll throw it and say fetch, ok.” She says with a stern look on her face. Luckily the angry beast never showed its face to me or my sister again.

Listening always pays off in some way, shape, or form. You should always listen, especially to our parents, for the smallest of things because eventually listening pays off. Listening can help prevent you from being chased by a dog, or  “drowning” in a pool.

Las cazuelas

Posted by Marcus Burrell in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 7:36 pm
Tuesday from 2:00-3:00 my spanish one class had an all spanish cuisine for lunch, which was very delicious. There wasn't one thing that I did not like. Me being a picky eater, that's a really big thing. I wanted to eat another whole plate, but I was full from my lunch that I had 2 hours ago. I actually forgot that we had the lunch in that day, but that's beside the point. I really enjoyed the food and the drinks that were served. The drinks were like a mixture of thing that you wouldn't really find in regular drink. My favorite drink was the white one with the cinnamon. It reminded me a lot of egg nog. The red one was good as well,  but the white stood out the most to me. Our class should do things like this more often. I like hands on learning and this was a perfect way to help me learn my spanish food.

Marcus Burrell "Flex" music and culture assignment

Posted by Marcus Burrell in English 1 - Kay on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 1:56 pm

The culture I am apart of is being a positive person, and not always trying to look at the negatives of everything and anything. I stutter very often, but you don’t see me walking around silent and not talking. Or always upset and angry at the world because of what my problem is.

DJ Lil man demonstrated that perfectly. He’s makes party music to party to, and at party’s you are happy, excited, and ready to have fun. That’s the type of people who are apart of my culture. In his video flex, it’s a group of boys dancing and showing you how to do the dance, “Flex.” There’s flashing strobe lights in the back, and smiles on everyone’s faces. That screams Marcus.

I can’t listen to the music that’s out now because it’s either talking about what new stuff, how much money, and how sex their artist is having. Personally, I don’t care about what you have because it won’t help me in any way. That’s also bragging as well, and I’m not one to brag. I let my actions do my talking. In the video “Flex,” DJ Lil man did a great job of showing that in his video, and he and the rest of the DJ’s out there are keeping music alive to me in my eyes. With out them I probably wouldn’t listen to much music.

I didn't have trouble with this slide like I did with the last slide. Everything became easier because I knew what I needed to correct.

Hey everyone, my name is Marcus Burrell and I am going to explain to you, some of the reasons why I put these pictures on my slide. The pictures that I chose represent who I am as a person, like my flaws, and who I truly am as a person. My picture is the back, and is the biggest picture because i am the theme.Certain pictures that are on my slide can say a lot about who I am without any words. There's more to me than what meets the eye. I can't be judged on my appearance. I am like a book and you have to explore to find out the true meaning of that book.
