Betty Louis Capstone

Posted by Betty Louis in Capstone - Rami - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 9:14 am

In every young girl’s life there is the need to find out who one is, what/who does one want to be, to be accepted, wanted, and to to strive one’s best abilities. In urban communities, (especially ones that are widely populated with minorities) those important needs encouraged aren’t always steered in the right direction of a prosperous future. Acknowledging this economic error, I decided to provide my community an act of community service that helps decreases this issue for my senior capstone. As a young girl, I myself was in need of assistance of those mental necessities. I greatly lacked social and athletic skills. Then, I was directed to WINS (Women In Naturals Sciences) an after school/summer enrichment program that promotes the educational value in the sciences (especially women in the sciences) and offers a large sum of professional and development key skills as well as trips needed for the professional fields (interviews, college tours, internships.. exc.) which changed me for the better. To give back I became the manager’s, Ms. Betsy Payne and the coordinator’s Ms. Kimberly Godfrey assistance in the nomination process for the upcoming girl’s willing to participate in this program, in workshops for the current girls in WINS, and the Academy of Natural Sciences’s assistance in being a WINS explainer in their exhibit Outside-In. My initial topic for this project was “Making a Difference” to show that the little good deeds done for someone else can create a huge impact for the community.

  • "WINS (Women in Natural Sciences)." Drexel University -. Pat Warner, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.ansp.org/education/programs/wins/>.

This source is very reliable and gives the viewer a general background information as to what the program WINS is essentially about. There are also guidelines as to what steps can or should be taken for young's wanting to be involved in the program and for faculty/staff teachers who would like to nominate young impressive girls. This sources will be very handy when I put my presentation together for me to explain to my audience what WINS is and how it was founded, what was it’s purpose, opinions from other girls there, how it branched out, and how it looks for it’s scouts.

  • "Women in Natural Sciences." Women in Natural Sciences. College of Natural Sciences, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://cns.utexas.edu/wins>.

In this source this is a program that has the exact name as wins, initial purpose, and abstract. The only difference is that this version of Wins is a college level step up. This program in Texas is exclusively for students who are in the University of Texas at Austin College of Natural Sciences. But other than that the two are very similar. It offers a lot of outreach and volunteer opportunities that students will gain benefits with while being in the program. In my capstone I would use this to compare and explain in depth the importance of a program like WINS.

  • WINS 30th Anniversary. Perf. Betsy Payne. WINS 30th Anniversary. Academy of Natural Sciences, 20 Sept. 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-3M_md_7Lc>.

This is a youtube video that is mostly about the WINS 30th anniversary in being of strong existence. In this video girls who have graduated from WINS along with the manager and coordinator of the program explain about their experiences and the impact that WINS has had on their lives. They also explain about the class trips, and science based workshops that go on in the program. In my capstone it would be great to show a piece of this video because my big sister in the program actually speaks on her experiences in WINS and how it basically helped her succeed throughout her high school career.

  • "WINS." Women in Natural Sciences. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.natsci.colostate.edu/faculty-staff/women-in-natural-sciences/>.

This would be a following up example of the WINS program in Texas. This also another WINS program but it is in Colorado State University; College of Natural Sciences. This webpage states their goal in promoting women in the field of natural sciences by providing them with a large amount of educational opportunities that involve networking, mentoring and much more. I could speak on how we are even more lucky because of lot of these programs that are similar to the WINS in Philly are college based and only for college students in that particular college, while the wins in philly targets rising female freshman high school girls that are within the Philadelphia school district instead. Helping the generation at a young age.

Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.afterschoolalliance.org/issue_59_African-American_and_Latino_Communities.cfm>.

This is a well written essay on the importance and massive effect of after school programs on minorities today. I would use this the back up my argument in why WINS is important and why I think I chose my capstone to be aiding them in getting more girls to apply for the program. I choose my capstone to be solely based on helping my mentors in keeping a strong foundation of the program not only because of how it impacted my life but also because of how its services will and can impact hundreds of other lives in the philadelphia area.

This is a video on youtube on a student's perspective of what wins is. The video is mostly a lot of pictures, but in each picture the girls in it are smiling, touching animals, pipetting, enjoying themselves, and each others company. There is not one picture where there is only one girl in it. This shows more of the sisterhood and closeness that comes with WINS. You’ll receive good friends that you’ll learn to love and keep for a very long time. It’s more than just an after school program, it’s a never ending cycle of sisterhood among the girls.

This is a website on some basic information and research on the top ten female scientist that changed the course of history. During one of the series of classes and workshops given in the program Wins there is a class solely based on female scientist whose great contribution to science has led us to the discoveries we are well known with today. It is pushed on us to know these things because back in the day women were shunned on wanting a similar education that was given to men and after the long fight for such a change to be made, our reputation of adding on to science must not be stopped. Though it may seem like we are all average, each and every one of us has the potential and intelligence to do something similar as to what these great women in history did.

This website is talking about there is a need and demand for more women to actively participate and man a career in the STEM fields. It’s not just an issue in America, it’s an issue everywhere which is why this science based program wins is contributing economically. Young ladies that are willing to pursue a career in the stem field in WINS are in the win for the money. A job for them in that field will be ensured for them in the future for it is needed. With young ladies going into those fields and WINS providing them with enough support to be successful will help increase those numbers in which more females are needed in the careers in the stem field.

  • N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://wins.ethz.ch/about.html>.

Like the other examples this is also another wins program located somewhere else. This one is for females of a much higher educational level. It is offered the Phd students and scientific staff. This is one is much more intense. Some of their events involve scientist flying from across the world from a wide range of industries and doing conventions to learn from one another. It is said that it doesn’t even have to be all about work, conversations can range to personal aspects of life as well. Their purpose is to connect women of scientific backgrounds and career experience socially and academically to make an even huger impact.

In this article the author writes how science is just another subject in class that ladies have yet to master. Even though there has been may great women in history who have contributed profoundly to the field leading into new discoveries and innovations, there is still more to be done. Science is a never ending and constantly new subject everyday and it is up to us to keep up to speed with it and stay on the ball to conquer it. She explains that women have to be the ones to led and help situate and make sense of things that are continuing to grow more complex in this field.

Inside out: Foreign In America

Posted by Betty Louis in Storytelling - Rami - C on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 10:14 am
My initial goal of this piece was to tell more and find out about what little we knew about the foreign exchange students that we have in SLA's senior class. We are all going to graduate pretty soon and I didn't what there to be any missing pieces and or gap in our memories of a person in SLA. I wanted their stories to be hear and shared to the public.

I accomplished this goal by getting their full corporation to the interview and also by trying to continue the conversation and get more out of the story if there were any one word responses.

I hope after viewing my piece that my audience will look at Ana and Andre more differently in a good way and become more open and understanding to their situation.

Here is the video (click on here).

Baked salmon and Broccoli

Posted by Betty Louis in Science and Society - Best - Y on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 2:08 pm
Ingredients:

-salmon

-salt and pepper

-different types of seasoning

-olive oil

-green and red peppers

-lemon juice

-Parsley

-garlic clove

-broccoli

-butter

 Process:

1. Rinse the fish off with the lemon juice

2. Season it in separate plate

3. pour oil in the aluminum foil pan and place the fish on it

4. Then out the fish in the oven at 425 degrees for about 20 minutes

5. lightly broccoli in a pot for about 5-10 minutes

7. When cooked sprinkle some salt and pepper with a touch of butter on top

Food Analysis:

I'm not sure where salmon originally comes from, but I know that salmon comes from the latin word salmonand lives in freshwater. The cost of salmon usually ranges from 4-8 dollars a pound depending on where it is bought. Broccoli was introduced from the Italian more than 200 years ago and from then on has been of large production because of it's essential nutrients of fiber, vitamins, carbs, protein and fat. Fresh broccoli usually cost around $1.80- to $2 per pound. Those of which are the essential part of the dish. All the other things such as the seasons, lemon juice and olive oil are pretty cheap as well in any local grocery store, especially walmart.

Regardless of the ingredients baking foods are but more healthier than frying because in frying foods  in all forms frying lead to no water-soluble vitamin loss, and very few heat-sensitive vitamins are lost. It can also lead to a high absorption of added fat and the formation of acrylamide. While baking requires little added fat.  Salmon is an excellent source of high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals. By using healthy oils like olive oil can boost your intake of healthy fats and vitamin E. The estimated time for this dish is about 25 minutes so it's not long of a wait. Broccoli is a good source of carbs and fiber, with 13 grams of carbs and 6 grams of fiber per serving. It helps you feel full faster, which might help you manage your weight. It also helps with prevention of heart disease, diabetes, and diverticular disease. Cooked broccoli is a good source of a number of essential vitamins and minerals that help keep you healthy, including vitamin C, folate and potassium.

Two ingredients that I would compare in my dish would be the salmon and the broccoli. Farming process vs planting or gaining these ingredients re my own would be very hard considering the type of environment that i live in. I live in an urban area so there isn't much of an healthy environment to plant broccoli or an access to a healthy freshwater ocean or lake to fish for salmon. Therefore, the only way to have these things would be to buy them at a local general store.

Personal Reflection:

I rarely had any issues with his unit because this unit was more so as a refresher for me. I learned a lot about the food industries in the 8th grade. Most of the things I already was aware of, but the biggest problem I've seen and that seemed to be new to me was when we watch the video on to talk of the man who was dedicated his life to educating people about the truth behind these things (TED Talk) he said that the labeling in this industry is massively incorrect. He used an example of how companies say that its milk is low in fat when is filled with tons of sugar. Which is something that is very true, but I never really paid attention, something I felt intrigued by. Another thing that caught my attention in this unit was that the maps that we looked over and how the rate in the US of people gain pounds increased over time. I always had a sense that was happening, but I wasn't really aware of how fast and rapid it was going along with how much is spread among the states. An interesting fact brought up in the TED talk video was that the school foods were just about similarly unhealthy like fast food. There aren’t fresh because of the budget cuts which makes them desperate in using the food that they can get, which are the unhealthy foods. I want to and will encourage my little sister and help her to stop eating those foods by packing her lunch before going to school or at night. Inform my mom on this information so that when she buys groceries she can be more mindful of these things. We are huge role in the food industry because we are not only victims of unhealthy foods, but also the consumers and the more we buy the stronger this cycle will become.

My demographics for this rule is to show the audience that it is okay to eat a piece of everything for all components in different types of food is what your body needs, The true problem in that is consuming too much food that your body already has a enough and doesn’t need. Basically there needs to be balance in the food you consume.

Pulse by Betty Louis

Posted by Betty Louis in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 9:51 am

These were her final seconds. Her last chance. All she has to do is accept it and help me out. I need her to work with me and come back. She could hear me, right? She has a pulse, she just needs to wake up.

"Mom! Mom, its me your son Mason! Please, wake up mom! I need you..."

Burying my face into the sundress she wore I cried. I cried because I prepped myself for this moment and I failed. She had been sick for a year and I knew her death would come soon. But, now I couldn't bare the thought of actually losing her. I worked so hard in fighting fate, when I should have just accepted and faced it. She was gone and not even the artificial heart and animare cells could keep her alive.

I wiped away my tears and walked over to the monitor. As usual everything looked fine and the monitor showed signs of a pulse, but she didn't move an inch.

“I guess you can’t beat death, huh mom?”

Silence was her reply. I slowly pressed the off button on the monitor and sat next to her in silence. I closed my eyes and rested my head by her arms. Memories of her rocking me to bed when I was young faded into my mind. Songs that she sang to to me with her soft whistle like voice came to mind and soon the tune hummed through my lips. Like it was happening all over again. Doing this my heart beat slowly and I regained some peace. I felt a cool rush to wind blow in from the only small window in my mother’s room, but I ignored the goosebumps that crept onto my skin and stayed comfortable in my mother’s possession. Since this would be the last time. But the suddenly I felt small faint movements within the bed. Knowing how my mind can play tricks on me I ignored it. Assuring myself that it was a figment of my imagination. But, then pokes of  dry crusty fingertips prickled along side of my arm and then my hair. I lifted my hair quickly as possible in shocked of what could be happening.

“Mom!” I shouted to her as I looked into her deep brown hazel eyes hoping she'll reply like “My baby or pudding,”

and a bright chocolate smile would appear upon her face. But all I got from her was

“Who’s Mason? And why do you keep calling me mom?”

Stunned by this reply I sat there and watched as she slowly sat up, caressing her head in her withered hands.

“She wants to see you now. She’s in room 306.”  Doctor Heath said with sorrowful and heavy eyes.

“Thanks.” I replied. I didn’t know what else I could say. Walking down the hospital halls, each step I took felt heavier to the point where I felt like I couldn’t lift my feet anymore. So I stopped, turned to my left and saw a family surrounded by an old women who appeared to be smiling at me. Her bright smile seemed to bounce off the chrome walls of her room and touched on me. I was smiling too. But once her smile had a ripple effect on me, her heartbeat had slowly left her and it was announced to all her family members as soon as she slowly closed her eyes with the monitor making that dreadful sound and that beautiful smile still on her face. Hoping none of her family members saw me staring, I quickly turned aways and began to walk again forget about the illusion of my heavy feet. Two rooms away and I heard urgent worried voices. No. One voice. It was Doctor Heath's voice and he was talking to someone I had never seen in the hospital and usually never forget a face. But he look familiar. For some reason I stopped to eavesdrop on their conversation.

“Is it true? Can it really bring back the de--” Doctor Heath said

“Shhh.. there’s cameras.” said the other guy. Then, he took Doctor Heath's arm and pulled him aside to a corner where a camera wasn’t monitoring.

“Listen, it took 3 -4 days but so far the ape has responded to the animare cells and  has a pulse. We need to do further research on how he responds to our test of fully ---” said the man before he heard my almost crushing a gum wrapper. Stupid robotic janitors must have missed a spot. Before he could move to see where I saw I made it to my mothers room. She was staring at the ceiling holding onto yellow sunflowers with a goofy smile on her face.

“Mom? What are you doing?” I chuckled,

“Oh hi my darling. I was practicing my pose for my funeral. With the flowers or without? What do you think?”

Mother always did have a way with serious situations. She liked to think of the bright side of even the worst case scenarios.

“I think that you have plenty of other important things to worry about then the pose you make when you're dead. Besides it wouldn't exactly be up to you, it would be up to the people who prepare you.” I’d always be the one to bring her back to reality.

“Not if I write it in my will,” she argued

“Oh mother,” I chuckled as I sat beside her and held her hand. “I love you.”

With her free hand against my cheek, “I love you too sweetheart,”

“Alright, how is my favorite patient doing?” interrupted Doctor Heath,

“You should know,” I replied back. Mother squeezed my hand as a hint to be nice. Doctor Heath always spoke nicely and respectfully but I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach about him. To me at least he always showed signs of being robotic. As if he had no true feelings and did what he was ‘programed’ to do.

“Well we all know. Her heart is getting weaker and bigger by the second and her body isn’t strong enough to continue on with the state that she is in. What’s even worse that we’re seeing is that the chambers are having trouble filling with blood. So what we can do now is simply hope for the best and pray.“ he said, as if he ever prayed.

Mother looked away at what he said, trying to fight back tears. His phone rang before I could insult him on his incompetence, once he saw the caller he rushed to get out and said

"I need to take this. I’ll be back with your blood test results."

While rushing out the door a piece of paper that loosely hung outside of his back pocket fell to the ground. I picked it up and opened it. While going back to the seat next to my mother and caressing her back with on hand I read what was in there paper in another. It was the researchers inquiry.

'DNA animare cells give life' under the heading was a picture of an ape. So that was what Mr. Heath and that strange man was talking about.

“Mason,” startled by this I hid the paper.

“Yes mom,”

“Can you do me favor?”

“Of course mother,”

“Take this,” she pulled out an envelope and handed it to me.

“Mom-”

“Take it,” She said interrupting me. “One day you’ll need it. And one more thing?”

“Anything,” I looked into her eyes.

“Can you remember me and tell your kids stories about when I die?”

“Mom, you can never be forgotten and thats a promise and I’ll make sure your grand babies don’t forget about you either.” I gave her a smile

She chuckled.

“Little tiny Mason’s running around,” she said as she closed her eyes and went to sleep.

As much as I wanted to stay as close to my mother as possible I had to find out more about those cells. Since they could possible help her. Although the thought of putting random cells into my mother’s body sounded creepy and untrusting with her being in her condition I had nothing left. She was going to leave me soon and we both knew it. But with these cells she could possible could stay just a little bit longer.  I went to the basement to find the old macbook pro my father gave to my mother when they were dating. I always tried to avoid looking at this thing. It was dusty and had a couple cracks but it was the memory of my father. He liked to do things the old-fashioned way. Inside of the front screen I see sticky notes covering everything, but the mid-center. No one ever touched his laptop because well it reminded us too much about him and his death almost destroyed my mother. After he left I put it in the basement so she wouldn’t have to remember. No one ever knew his password but my mother and I. My father was old, but he was smart. His password was a series of numbers and letters. I was surprised I remembered it all. As soon as I opened it there was a typed letter on display.

‘Dear Mason,

My darling Mason. If you are reading this then you are on the right track and your father and I have taught you well. In the envelope I should have already given you, there is a key. Your father, as smart as he is has been saving up since the day I told him I was pregnant. Now darling don’t get too excited but this money is for you to continue your studies in college. The key opens a safe that is in the back on the closet where we use to put all of our old shoes. If you pick up some of those old shoes and feel your way through you’ll feel a hole. That hole is really an opening to a small door. Open it. Once you do, you’ll find the safe. In that safe there should be about 3 million dollars. I know you’ll put it to good use. You father and I raised you beautifully. Baby boy, if and when you read this I should be in the hospital because you know my condition doesn’t allow me to live long. Please don’t cry or even feel sorrow. God will build a way for you and for me. I shall meet you father once again and we’ll be watching over waiting for you to join us. Please live a long and fulfilled live and continue to make us proud my love. I know you will do and discover brilliant things just like your father. If only he could see was wonderfully you have grown into an eighteen year old man. Our little Mason, a man. I love you and I know with all my heart your father does too. Bye now my darling.’

I looked inside of the envelope and it was a key. In the key was engraved my father’s password. That probably was the hint from my mom. 3 million dollars? Why save it when she could have used it to get new organs or even better treatment? As tempted as I was to take the money and rush to the hospital so they could help I knew it’d be too late and my mother wouldn’t accept it. For her condition a heart-lung transplant for her would be almost one fourth of that sum. So I continued on with my search about the animare cells. My father use to work for NASA and I’d always be around whenever he did his research. I use to always be so fascinated about how he conducted his experiments. I started by searching anything about animare cell in different search engines. I saw many articles that popped up like the one that Doctor Heath dropped. But they all said the same thing and I needed more than what those articles covered. Then, I started reading my father’s stickies around the laptop. One that really caught my eye. “DNA cells reanimate brain?” I quickly went to the search bar of the macbook and typed in “cells”. Many different searches came up. But I chose the one that said ‘DNA Cells’. In that was a word document. In that document seemed to be a journal in which my father wrote all of his thoughts down about what he knew about cells reanimating the brain. It would be a serum filled with micro highly advanced brain cells, blood cells and organisms that stimulates the human brain and heart. It turns out my father was the one trying to create this new technology, but because he died he was unable to finish it. But, who did? My father only had only one partner in NASA that he actually trusted. Rubert. Rubert was his high school buddy that my father entered into NASA with. My father always thought it to be  blessing that they both go in. I call it a conspiracy. I could have sworn I saw Rupert trying to make a move on my mother and since that day I never trusted the man. He could have been the one to take credit for my dad’s work and have tried to finish the process my dad started. I’d believe it and I’d find a way to make hims pay for it too. No wonder Rupert came by the house asking for my father’s laptop. It’s a good thing I lied about not having it. There was another sticky note that said “DNA cells prt 2…” I searched it up and found another file but this one happened to be cut off. The basement was my dad’s own personal laboratory. According to the journal he had created his own serum and wanted to try it on a dead animal out on the street before trashbots got to it. I guess he never got the chance. It says that he placed the serum in the mini fridge to preserve it. There was two.

The next day mother wanted to be let got from the hospitals care. She knew that she wouldn’t survive so she wanted to spend her last days home. I didn’t mind. I told her everything that I found and my plans. I still didn’t get the chance to look at the 3 million dollars, but she knew I’d find it and find out about father’s old plans. She too went snooping around his laptop. Though she didn’t want me to try it on her.  I tried to respect her decisions but she didn’t try to respect or understand how much I needed her by my side. She was all I had left, yet she still believed I could make it without her. I couldn't see that happening so I continued on with my research. Every since I got a job mother made me a bank account to manage my own money in my own way. That afternoon I took 1.5 million dollars from the safe and put it into my bank account. Then I spent the rest of the day with her. I cooked for her, laughed with her, and watched movies with her, lying that I finished all my work in school just so I could spend her last moments with me. Together. Just like how it use to be. That night when she went to sleep coughing I tucked her into bed and gave her a kiss goodnight. Then, I went online to amazone in search of the perfect artificial heart and surgobot to perform on mother. WIth the right amount of in the year 2043 you can find just about anything. Once I found right functioning heart with mother’s blood type, a 4 starred surgobot, and asked for express shipping the total cost rounded up to about 1.5 million. This is my mother’s life on the line here. I pressed accept without a doubt in my mind. I went to bed and looked at the article that I saw come out of Dr. Heath’s pocket. I’ve read the article a million times now at school, but for some reason I wanted to read it again.

The next morning mother grew even more ill. Each time she continued to cough blood would usually be the product of it. Whenever I tried to call an ambulance for her she’d just stop me and say “No. Just hold me hand.” And so I did. But I couldn’t bare to see her in this condition. I want to remember her as they way we were yesterday. Beautiful and happy. Now she is weak and exhausted. I closed my eyes and prayed for God to find another way for her. But it didn’t seemed to be working. She just just kept coughing out blood. When she finally stopped she looked me in my eyes and said

“You always did look just like your father. My darling, remember that I love you,”

My first tears in all of this began to fall from my eyes because I knew these would be her final moments alive. Thought my plan could work it there was still that chance that it wouldn’t and it crushed my soul to lose her.

“I love you too mamma,”

“Forever and ever?” she said hoarsely

“Forever and ever,” I replied

Then she closed eyes to what seemed like she fell asleep, but she lost her grasp in my hand. I knew she was gone.  I sat there in silence and a minute later the doorbell rang. I went downstair from her room to get it and saw it was a man with a clipboard, a high definition robot holding a large package.

“Are you Mason Smith?” he said looking up from the clipboard.

“Yes,” I said.

“Sign here,” he said as he handed me the clipboard to sign. I signed it and handed it back to him.

“Here is the manual for the surgobot. He is already programed as you asked and ready to perform. That is the organ,”

“Thanks,” I told him.

“Here’s the number of the seller if you need any help. You have a good day sir,” he said as he walked away.

“Alright. Let’s get to work surgobot,”

“Surgobot 5000 is ready to go,”

“Surgobot carefully take the box all the way upstairs and then go to the first room to your right. Wait for me there,”

Then surgobot proceeded up the stairs. I ran straight to the basement and took one of the serum. My father wrote that too much could possible cause brain damage. I went back upstairs to my mother’s room and found surgobot standing there, waiting.

“Surgobot,”

“Yes master,” it responded

“Please. Do as you were programed to my mother,” breathlessly I pointed to my mother’s dead body and surgobot got to work. I watched it all. I sat down and watched as surgobot 5000 opened up his chest and display of all different types of surgery utensils came out on a tray and took some things from the package and hooked my mother to a monitor. I watched as surgobot cut open my mother’s chest, took out her weak and enlarged heart, put back in the heart I bought, and sew her back up. All the while, all I thought about was my father. I thought about what was he planning to do with this serum. Did he already know about mom’s condition before she even did? Why did he pursue to do such a thing? Maybe , it was because we worked in NASA and he mind just wondered to those things. Maybe he just wanted to discover or create something new. Maybe he knew something. I was wondered and could never figured out what was would go on in my father’s mind, but my mother could. It was like she was a psychic. Which is probably why he loved her so much. Mother understood father like no other. Mother understood me also. I wonder if she knew what I’d be doing. Oh God, please let this work. I can’t loose all I have, not now when I need it the most.

“Master?” surgobot said interrupting my thoughts.

“Yes,” I replied. Within 5 hours of constant nail biting and piercing thoughts rattling in and out of my head surgobot 5000 was finished.

“I am finished what I was programed to do. Is there anything else you would like me to do master?”

“No. Thank you surgobot,”

“Have I done a good job?”

“Yes, you may now go to sleep if you please.”

“Thank you master,”

Surgobot found a corner and put himself to sleep. The monitor now had a beating sound which meant a pulse, but she needed more than just that. she needed the serum. I opened up the top and poured the serum into her mouth and watched as it went down her mouth. Then, I sat down beside her and waited.

Literary Lens Q3 Benchmark

In our English 3 class students, were asked to built and construct an entertaining yet informative video that takes any type of movie, show, article and or recorded/documented aspect of their surroundings of which they will help the viewer see in one or more of the following lens feminist, marxist, and new historicist.

By: Betty Louis, Liza Cohen, Timothy Ingram, and Emily Jenson.

Lens English Project from Betty Louis on Vimeo.

Our Reflection:

Liza’s Write-Up:

The group and I worked really well together to finish this project on time and present it at it’s best quality. The group worked sufficiently by meeting our goals on time. By doing this, each member of the group put in a great deal of effort and contribution to the project. I, personally, liked playing the role of managing the group; making sure we were up to par with doing things on time and meeting the correct requirements. Before we starting to make our video, we took the proper amount of time to do some thorough brainstorming. Each day in class, I would raise ideas to the group before going through with them. This was important since the project was a team effort and I didn’t want to make decisions that my group didn’t agree with; without communicating with them first. Aside from that, I helped with the physical portion of the project; by organizing the video. The imovie wasn’t on my computer. Therefore, I used the work-time given to us in class by helping my group member with the video. I helped put slides together. While she put everything in the video, I organized it. So, I was contributing to the organization aspect of the movie. In general, I did the daily requirements of being in a group project by making sure I recorded my lines from the script every day and regularly asking my group members if they needed any extra assistance with any portions from the project.

A moment of collaboration that I am the most proud of is when the group and I would record our scenes for the movie. This made us get more enthusiastic with the project. Each time this happened, we got excited when it triggered us to get new ideas to make our video even better.

Betty Louis- Write Up

In this project I personally contributed my technology skills and ideas. In the beginning of this project I helped by suggesting clips of the movie that we chose. Once that was discussed and decided I helped with giving out websites and other ideas each group member could use in order to download the clips and the movie into our laptops. During this whole project I was the one that made sure everyone emailed me their recordings and I put them all together in one whole video. After that was done I checked in with my teammates and allowed them to see it in case there was anything that I missed. Once I got some feedback from them I made some minor changes,  exported the video from imovie and uploaded it. I am very proud at how well we all contributed to the project, collectively collaborated on our ideas, that we all were able to finish and turn in our benchmark right on time, and exceeded in following our goals. One moment that I’m really proud of is how in class we all suggested our ideas of how the flow of the video would be. Whenever there was an idea put on the table we would all think about it. If we all agreed on it we’d keep it, if it wasn’t we’d professionally talk about it and make some improvements on it.

Timothy’s Write-Up

These past two weeks my group and I worked real good to finish the final product for our quarter three english benchmark. We all took time to set out the rules and goals as a team and we all follow them to have a complete benchmark. In this project I personally contributed to giving out ideas on what should be done for the whole benchmark. I contributed with finding all the information on the lenses so as a group explain what the movie have to do with the different lenses. I contributed to recording my part and more to make an actually video for the final design based on the movie Taken. They last thing I could equally I contributed to was finding the right clips in the movie Taken to compare the lenses to the parts in throughout the movie. They moment of collaboration I am most proud is when we all came together to give out the ideas because we all gave out personal ideas on what we should do. Also I am most proud of that because we came to one final agreement without any arguments or disagreements on what video we could analyze into all the different lenses. At the end of the product I am happy because we all worked hard to complete this quarter three english benchmark and finish it as a group.

Emily

Over the past two weeks my group and I worked consistently to complete our quarter three benchmark. We worked well together, setting deadlines and goals. I helped chop up the movie in imovie and edited out what we needed. I wish I had been in class more and contributed more to this project, I really did not do as much as my groupmates. They were awesome and reminded me gently about things i needed to do and worked with me through the process. Overall i understand the lenses more now and even find myself subconsciously analyzing movies and tv everyday now.

Father’s Approval

Comparing "Taming of the Shrew" to "Coming to America"

Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew", starts out by showing the reader that in relationships parental interference plays a big role and is part of the root of a relationship. In "Taming of the Shrew" the father of Katherine and Bianca Batista, is the person that one must go through and satisfy in order to have his daughters hand in marriage. The leading man (Akeem) and lady (Lisa) in the 1988 movie “Coming to America” struggles with mating with the one that their true heart desires because of their parents. Akeem’s and Lisa’s father both want their child to marry the person of their choice.

Although Baptisia, King Jeffe (Akeem’s father), and Cleo (Lisa’s father) already have their hearts set out on who and how their daughters/son should marry, each of their interest is set out in different directions. Baptisia has a role that the eldest daughter must get married first in order for the young to get married. King Jeffe wants his son to marry a woman who was raised to be an obedient queen of which he wants to choose for Hakeem. Cleo wants his daughter to be romantically involved with a man who has a lot of money. In this movie and play the parents have a big say therefore if they say no not much goes right. Although in both “Taming the Shrew” and the movie “Coming to America” the father figures have influence over their children's choice of their spouse, the two situations are different because the expectations in the movie are even higher than the ones in the play. This reflects that parents seem to be more involved in their children’s relationships today.

In Act 1 scene 1 lines 48-54 of “Taming the Shrew”, in Batista's home two men name Lucentio and Hortensio come before Baptista to ask for his youngest daughter, Bianca’s hand in marriage. Baptisia walking into the scene with both daughter responds by saying “Gentlemen, importune me no farther, For how I firmly am resolved you know: That is not to bestow my youngest daughter Before I have a husband for the elder. If either of you both love  Katherine, Because I know you well and love you well, Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure.”Basically what Baptista is saying that no one can persuade him from his final decision which is his the eldest daughter, Katherine must marry first before Bianca can get married. If one of them would like to take Katherine in order to get to Bianca they can. In the century of the book one had to pay for the bride to be ones so already in order to marry one would need to have  money. But Baptista wanted nothing more than for his first daughter to be married for the belief was if a women grew old with no husband she would wither away in hell. Baptista continued on by saying that since they are “friends” if they would like to have Katherine along with Bianca they could. Not caring what would happen to the both of them afterwards. They really wanted Bianca to begin with and even said so. As long as Katherine is married first is all he really cared about. Showing that nothing else really matters but that one thing. Though asking for Katherine to get married first is a big thing it is not as big as characterizing the spouse for Katherine and Bianca.

hakeem & father
hakeem & father

In this scene of the movie Coming to America Prince Akeem explains to his father why he is not feeling well. He wishes to do things himself, especially choose his own bride. But King Jeffe tries to assure him that the women he has already chosen is the perfect fit and that Akeem shouldn’t have to worry about a thing, after all he is a prince. At the breakfast table once King Jeffe sees that it is really about not choosing his own that bothers Akeem he shouts “Aha!” feeling successful to have “cracked the code”. He starts out by trying to guilt Akeem of how he and his mother have gone through a great deal of trouble to find his queen. Then he eases the tension by including that she was raised to do everything a queen would. When Akeem tries to dismantle what the king says by asking “What if I do not love her?” The king disregards the question and acts on it as if it was just the wedding jitters talking and replying that it is normal to be nervous about meeting her. Then Akeem’s mother joins in and supports the king’s response by telling her experience on meeting Akeem’s father and how nervous and terrified she was. The king ends off by saying “You see my son there is fine line between love and nausea.” and how doing things for oneself is an overrated experience. The camera shoots each person by themselves when they talk because each person has a different thought to say but when Akeem first comes and sits by his parents all of them are shown in one shoot and then it just goes to Akeem and his father. Also in this conversation the camera is mostly being viewed on the father which reflects on how Akeem’s father keeps his head up high. Which reflects that the king stands firm on each decision he makes and when it comes to his son he knows best. The only reason why the king want to pick Akeem’s bride for him is because he wants her to have all the characteristics and qualities that he thinks are more than acceptable to him. She has to be exactly what he wants for Akeem.

As one can see, though the king and Baptista start with similar tactics of persuasion they end the conversation in contrasting topics. Baptista says to his servant“Nay, let them go, a couple of quiet ones.” (Act 3, Scene 2, Line 245) The situation that happened for this quote to be said by Baptista in the book was Katherine’s wedding day with Petruchio. Petruchio seemed to be a fine man who wanted Katherine’s heart until he decided to show up late, drunk, and  in rags to be married in. During the wedding, he threw the bible on the ground and punched the  priest. Soon after the wedding and the dinner he suddenly wanted to leave with Katherine as fast as possible. But Katherine and Baptista wanted to them both to stay least for a little while. But Petruchio was already set on leaving, so Katherine told him if he really loved her he would stay. His response was that was to tell his servant to get the horses ready. After this, Katherine refused to do anything with him, so he sweet talked her onto his side. They ended up leaving anyway and Baptista says that quote which means just let them be, they are a peaceful couple. Katherine’s happiness is the least of Baptista’s concerns. As long as she’s married and seems to be taking care that’s all that matters. Baptista witnessed the unstable things Petruchio did and still let Katherine go off with him and went about his life.

Screen Shot 2013-12-04 at 8.30.36 PM

Later in the movie as soon as Cleo finds out that Akeem is a prince he completely and fully accepts the relationship between Akeem and his daughter and tries to take Lisa’s ex-boyfriend out of the picture. During this scene Akeem take’s Lisa home from their date and evidently Cleo tries to keep him over so he can inform Akeem’s father about his whereabouts. When seeing Akeem, Cleo greets him with a big smile (like never before), welcomes him into his home, offers and insist that he has a seat and drink, and says how they need to start talking to each other more. While Cleo slips to get the drink he actually goes into the kitchen to tell Akeem’s dad his address and that he’s here. Soon after the doorbell rings and Cleo answers. It’s Lisa’s ex-boyfriend Darryl with roses (before Cleo found out about Akeem’s throne he and Darryl planned to get Darryl and Lisa back together and it was set to tonight). Once Cleo opens the door and sees it Darryl he slams it on his face. When Cleo comes back to Lisa and Akeem, Lisa asks who was at the door and Cleo lies that it was jehovah witnesses. Darryl rings the doorbell again and Cleo runs to the door practically tripping over the rug, trying the avoid the suspicion on Lisa and Akeem’s face, answers the door and yells at Darryl “Look! The girl doesn’t like you anymore! Can’t you get that through your greasy head!” and slams the door before Darryl could finish his sentence. The third time Cleo has to open the door because Darryl knocked the door he says “I warned ya didn’t I?! Donny get him!”, his dog goes hurtling towards Darryl, biting and barking at him, and Cleo closes his door for the last time. Now that Cleo knows about Akeem’s riches he will stop at nothing to keep Lisa and Akeem together. He practically injured himself to do so. In this scene the camera is focused a lot on Cleo and his body language. His antsy movements in trying to make Akeem stay, the big smile on his face, sweet talk when Akeem’s around, the running to the door, and the vein on his head that pops up when he see’s Darryl at the door. By this one can analyze that not only does Cleo care about who has more money for his daughter and himself but he finds that it is up to him that no one stands in his way.

Though Cleo and Baptista both want their daughters to be married it is for different reasons if which are on different scales of stakes. In the end of “Taming the Shrew” Katherine stays married to the wretched Petruchio, endures his treachery and Baptista questions nothing about their marriage. In the movie “Coming to America” all of the parents secretly discussed it out and allow Akeem and Lisa to wed one another. One can see that in both the play and the movie the parents are the ones who seem to make the all the decisions for their child and have the power to do as they please in whatever form or shape. But what separates and classifies the two is that in the movie the parents are more absorbed and have interest in the relationship of their kin than of the parent in the play. Society evolved and change the ideal parent from being carefree and have a couple rules to a more involved parent with more of a higher standards for their children. The book and The movie both reflect that parent involvement in their children's love life is more common today than any other time period.

Me encanta niños!

Entonces me gustaría abrazo y beso él.

“All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone, everything is in relation to everything else.” - Buddha

After all that I have learned from Buddhism some of their principles that align most with my values are that (referring to the quote) everything is in relation to everything else. I feel like this is saying that everything has some value, some worth, and is there to be here for a reason and that is my personal belief. In the beginning it talks about how everything both appears and disappears for a certain amount of time. Everything has its place in the world and their own amount of time that is sent in the world, which is also what I believe in.

Quotes:

“ There’s silence in our hearts because there’s inexpressive grief and lack of information so the only thing that we don is stream naturally toward a church a mace of spiritual growth”

“I think religion helps us to deal with what we don't understand, with what overwhelms us, with what makes life hard. It helps us gain an another”

“Alongside the prayers, there were angry calls for vengeance”

“Its very very important that we ourselves not become tragically victimized by this in a way that would turn us into any kind of vengeance mob.”

  • There was a photographer taking pictures not at foxconn but near the premises and he was held for two days and beaten.

  • there was a epidemic suicide at foxconn. a month after month of suicide. now theres suicide nets so people can’t jump off the roof.

  • Some factory workers are very young. Youn as the age of 12 or younger.

“No matter what hath done guilt is hidden in all. For all things truly wicked started from an innocent.” Imagine a court case with the jury, lawyers, defendants, prosecutors, the security, the audience, and most importantly the judge. Each and every people, in that room whether they have or have no important relation to the case has a role and is designated to play it right and accept it.

In my history class we have researched and role played numerous trials as if we were really the character given to us and through those experience I’ve come to a closing understanding that no one is really innocent. Everyone is guilty of something and for that being we must all share the blame. One ordinary person can change everything with one act. Therefore, one turning their back on the situation as if it didn’t matter and it is not their problem automatically lays a splash of guilt across their face.

For example, in my trial notes for sweatshops going on nowadays the us consumers were second innocent in my opinion (I don’t have notes on the poor workers because that was the role my group played) mostly because they are just the consumers. They buy what they like and the money goes where it goes but during the cross examinations in my notes they stated “They are under a veil in which the multinational corps keep them under a small box of not knowing how and where their clothes are actually made.” and “need to focus on their own problems first than to help others on the spot” Even with that being said in analyzing these statements there is still guilt held securely under all the sympathy in it.

Though they may be accusing the multinational corporations for trying to keep their sweatshops in secret but they could have open their minds more to where does their clothes comes from and though they have problems of their own that is what makes you a better and greater person, to pause for a second, get yourself stable, and hold out a hand for someone in need of a lift. But they didn’t do it. They just went about their lives as if the situation didn’t exist. That is partial to what makes them guilty in the trial. But even before this happened we researched a bit to introduce us to what we’d be getting ourselves into and in my journal entry #31 I jot down some notes on.

Also in my response to modern day sweatshops I explained about the possibility of making a good change out of it . But just maybe there can be a different option other than passing down the blame and pointing fingers though we all have some part in the crime. Another example would be the Cortez Hernandez trial of which I also took some trial notes(H.C.) on . It is somewhat every similar to the sweatshop trial in structure but of course is a different case in which everyone is GUILTY OF SOMETHING!

“I think religion helps us to deal with what we don't understand, with what overwhelms us, with what makes life hard. It helps us gain an anchor” A quote that I was able to grab and collect in my journal entry #13 along with other very insightful quotes and my reactions to them. In the religion unit that was taught in history class I realized that religion can either unite us or separate us. Journal entry #13 sort of shows the positive side of religion but in journal entry #9  it shows a bit of the opposite. It talks about orientalism and how much ignorance it brings. Religion seems to be the backbone or foundation that some people tend to fall back on when they have nothing else. In that there can and will come unity and acceptance with oneself and others. But then there are some other people who tend to go bit extreme to the point where other people’s lives can be in danger. Journal entry #9 is an example for orientalism is still out there today. But that doesn't mean we can't change it. I have come to analyze at many different angles that religion can be both good and bad but it is mostly up to the people and how they choose to take it to decide.

Do you think Okonwo's past experience are an excuse for his current behavior?

I think Okonwo's past experiences are & aren't an excuse for his current behavior because he had work a lot independently to get where he is now. Along with that the shame of having a father as the village failure of which must play a big role in who he is now. He never really had a role model or father figure to show and teach him the roles and guide him to gain some moral values. But at the same time it's not okay that he is so controlling and walks around like a total statue. Emotionless. Hard. Cold. but this is a result of what happened to him in the past. being the way Okonwo's is, is probably just his way to get things done without technically having any interference. HI see him as basically by himself. I'm in the middle with my answer because his mental morals may not be straight but It can't totally be his fault for the way he is.

Never Shall I Forget...

Never Shall I Forget the piercing pain that shoots through my system
as my mom says to me in a calm weird like voice with eyes full of regret
"Im disappointed in you."
Never SHall I Forget the warmth that spread throughout the house
when she laughs & tickles my little sister.
Never SHall I Forget the dark lonely nights
and hearing the squeaky sound of my door
as my little sister opens it to lay beside me for comfort.
Never shall I Forget those hot sizzling days,
seeing a ritas water-ice in someone's hands
and just wanting to drown in its cold sensation.
Never Shall I forget the first time I saw you
and looking back never knowing
how important you'd mean to me now.

BM Reflection:

Posted by Betty Louis in Geometry - Thompson on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 1:28 pm
1) This project relates to the real world because if you want to become an architect and remodel building or fix it up buildings or certain areas in a place you'll need to know the area and perimeter of the building knowing how much space it takes up to that. But nobody has actual time to measure the building by hand. You can just use one of the methods we used. Also if you want to rebuild your home or make some changes and make it look better (like change the windows or doors..etc.) you need to know the perimeter and area of those objects.
2) The most exciting part of this project was actually letting people see my building through my eyes. Which was when I got the chance to draw and color out my building on poster paper. Another exciting part was when our group was given the chance to go outside and measure what we needed for the project and take pictures of our building with us standing next to it. The least exciting part of this project was doing the math and calculating the height, area, and perimeter of my building. I also did really enjoy having to worry about printing and putting the paper together and making sure my group members we on track. it took too much of my time having to go back when I got the wrong calculation and worrying about my group members.
3) From completing this project I learned that there always alternatives in measuring buildings, if you make one mistake in math it can mess up everything so make sure everything is done accurately, and that math includes a lot of time and patience. I also learned a lot about how to use the mirror method and the picture method and I got a full good understand about it and why it's used.

Language Autobiography 2013: Is it necessary for all to "fit in"?

Posted by Betty Louis in English 2 - Block on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 6:40 pm
In this project it was required that each student picks a theme about language that interest them. It could be bad or good they can decide but in that they must help the reader to understand what they are trying to say and relate it to their life. It could be a past experience, scene, or even what's happening in society/the world today. In that you must intertwine it with larger analysis that leads but to a broader idea and add your own reflection. Each student would have to incorporate one descriptive scene along with deeper thoughts and analysis.

In today’s society it is looked at that to make it one must blend in with the ‘popular and superior’ crowd and allow one’s life to fit that crowd. When the topic of language is raised, English is the most commonly spoken in the US obviously and standard English seems to be the most professional language of all. When living in the US it was something that seemed to be ‘normal’ and ‘natural’ as if being different in that sense is wrong...

In elementary school I never really thought about such a thing much. All I knew and understood was that now that I’m in Philly, away from most of my family English would be the language I’d hear the most and speaking it for me wasn’t an option; I had to. I never was exposed to the thought of how speaking a different language that may be foreign to others could be a bad thing until that day...

My mother had decided to pick me up from school that day and I was happy to have her walk me home and have that sense of security. While walking I noticed some kids who go to the same school as I did walking also on the other side of the road. Two little boys about that same age as I was (about 7). After I noticed their presence my mom called my attention and said in a voice only I hear “Ki jan jou ou te pasé?” (How was your day?) “It was good” I told her. Then her phone rang and she picked up. It was my dad. What I noticed was that she was talking english with him when usually when it comes to him she speaks her home language. Creole. A language which Haitians speak. Then soon I realized it was because she was trying to explain to him how to communicate with his boss at a more professional english level that he asked her advice for. I wondered if everything was alright.

At the corner of my eye I could see and hear the kids snickering say that “she sounds Jamaican” as if there was a problem even if she was. One actually had the nerve to ask with a smirk on his face if she was one. On the phone my mom didn’t notice but I was so mad I yelled “shut up you african booty scratcher! You ugly too!” but with that I did also felt embarrassed. On the phone my mom was loud which made it easy for people a block away to hear her accent. But she’s my mother and no matter how loud she may be it would never change the importance and impact she has had on my life.

Though she wasn’t from here she made an effort to try and speak the language that was foreign to her and it was bad  that most didn’t even notice that. Too bad back then, I was too young to understand that. But because of that it is to be felt that many with accents aren’t taken seriously when needed because they don’t speak or sound like they’re speaking ‘proper english’. But as I got older and really looked at the American society I came to realize that its prejudice, injustice and more. For example I remember awhile back, my mom ordered a pepperoni pizza on the phone and it was on speaker so I eavesdropped onto the conversation. It was because of my mother's accent the person constantly asked my mother to repeat what she was saying as if she was speaking a different language. On top of that they took forever to deliver. When I ordered the pizza and said the exact thing’s my mother said the last time because I don’t have that much of an accent they understood me and the delivery came under 30 minutes which confuzzles me.

Even though she had an accent in the end the workers were able to understand what she was saying because we got what she asked for but why give me different service than her? It has been called to my and many others attention that some people in society feel as those people with hard accents aren’t truly educated and can be easily taken advantage of many things such as their disability to speak standard english. Which isn’t true at all. If one were to take a survey of who agrees with this quote ‘one shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover’ many would agree but I feel as though society has never even tried to live up to that expectation.

All leading up to what I’m trying to say. It isn’t fair for someone to be treated differently just because you don’t understand them. There are other ways to communicate and to automatically assume they aren’t able to have the same skills or intelligence that you have doesn’t sound right or possible humane.. There is such a thing as being open-minded and I believe if more people were able to think it that matter thing would be a lot better. I read a piece by Bell Hooks that is titled "this is the oppressor's language/yet I need it to talk to you":Language, a place of struggle” and that quote means a lot of things. One, she explains how originally Africans weren’t meant to speak English as they do now. It was because when in the time of slavery where they were taken from their homeland, there was so many different Blacks from many different tribes and areas in Africa, with their own type of language that it was complex to communicate with one another, especially their new masters. So they were forced to learn and speak under the language of their oppressor which is what we all know as to be English. It still amazes me till this day of that effect and the same thing happens till this day to foreigners who come to America hoping for opportunity and along that process are stripped of their identity by being forced to speak English and forget about what they use to speak.

All I can say about my true ethnicity is that its special just like any other kind of race or culture. It shouldn’t be judged because of its differences from other. in fact it should be looked at in the opposite way because being different is what makes it unique and special. I just find it hard to believe but strongly agree that many have a problem accepting that notion.

The Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Betty Louis in World History - Block on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 2:52 pm
Introduction
For this project it was first shown to us a couple videos that give us a brief summary of what the keystone pipeline was about. Then after it was instructed that we explore more about it ourselves, done our own research, wrote down some notes and interesting facts that we found out on a table and share/discuss it with the class. Once we all shared and gained a full understanding of what the keystone pipeline was about, its pros and cons, and the background of it our teacher decide it was time that we create our own monologue from three different perspectives of characters that have an involvement with the pipeline. If working alone we were to pick three different characters (it could be anything you wanted.. ex. a teacher Australia, student in Kansas, a beaver up on a tree..exc.) that we would want to write about. My choices was a man named Maxwell a construction worker working on the actual pipeline, an unemployed autistic male named Sammy trying to make a living in this world for him and his kid daughter Alice, and my last character is a teenage girl named Kelly Stone who's mother is an environmentalist working on protesting against the pipeline. While doing this project I learned about a pipeline that is acting happening right now and this pipeline can affect the lives of many people in many different ways and perspectives. I enjoyed exploring those many different ways.

Monologue #1: I could say yes or no.
(The scene is maxwell coming to work signing in, taking to his co-workers, drinking coffee, then getting right down to business) he has flashbacks about the nes he had watched earlier with his wife about the pipeline, did a little research on it himself...)
(sits inside the machine while having his right hand on the lever)
What am I doing? This isn’t in my decision to make. I could chose to move my hand up or down, continue on with the construction for this pipeline or not, lose my job and suffer or fight for what’s right. Right. What is right in this? I need my job for I have a responsibility to my wife and my kids but doing this will also affect the lives of many people and some don’t even know it.
(talks with anger)
What angers me is the fact that the people doing this don’t even care! Money, Money, and more Money is probably all they think about. Heartless bastards and I’m forced to follow orders or else. Else..
Nicole my gorgeous wife is probably watching the news right now seeing the this bulldozer knowing that I’m in it and to my left seeing the bunch of protesters by the gate chanting, forcing the words, “End The pipeline now or that means game over for the ozone” into our heads until it might actually find its way down our throats convincing us that this is wrong!
Alisha is probably in class learning about this in history; embarrassed to have me as a father... and my son sean as little as he is doesn’t even understand what’s going on.
Oh man, this is overwhelming! One push or pull of my hand can do so much I’m not sure if I can.. If I can
(stops and looks out the window)
Yeah, I’m alright. Yeah I’ll get to it. I think I drank some bad milk.
(covers mouth and pretends to burp)
But alisha, sean, and nicole. My family is all I have and jeopardizing their future is not an option. The thoughts of the risks of destroying their future probably is my bad milk that I “drank”. Well my decision has been made. I’m left with no other choice.
(yells out the window)
Ok. Lets get to it guys.
(pushes the lever)

Monologue #2: Sammy

(The scene is Samuel at work and is soon called in my the boss and is fired. He’s laided off. sitting on the couch sees a picture of his daughter and tears of the changes of losing will bring. His daughter Alice’s works on her homework with the other neighbors kids and he sits on the couch depressed, watching tv.)

(sits down on the couch looking at his daughter’s picture)

Got the eyes of her mother and my smile. Why has it come to this? Why me? I did nothing wrong. I followed orders. It’s not what people say a piece of cake finding a job when your autistic.

(looks aways from frame)

Dr. Browne is the only one who understands me. Yet she promised if I just followed the rules and look like everybody else everything would be fine. I did that. I know I did that.

(look back at frame)

Alice is all I have and all I want is to make her happy. I love my little pumpkin pie too much. I remember finding her on my doorstep with the letter her mother left. Sound asleep looking like an angel sent from God. God. I been so good. Now what am I going to tell her when she comes home from the neighbors. Um.. Hey honey, daddy doesn’t have a job right now. He didn’t do anything bad, he just had to be let go for a while. But don’t worry sweetheart everything is going to be alright ok? No, she’s only 8 and she doesn’t deserve that.

(looks around)

This little apartment is our life. All of our memories all started by that door

(looks at the door and back to the picture)

but this picture … this picture was taken on her 5th birthday and I promised her that I’d be there if she ever needed anything and I can’t fail now.

(sigh)

But what am I going to do?

(covers face and soon flips channel)

Oh. the news -.- the channel on tv where people sit and tell you where you’re living sucks! Tell me something I don’t know

(listens closely for he hears sirens)

Example A, police sirens.

(shakes his head and looks back to the tv for he hears a word that catches his attention)

.. What?

(turns up the volume)

Keystone creates new job! and may destroy.. Whoow wait a minute, wait a minute! Create new jobs? *takes phone & dials* Doctor! Doctor! Can you please turn your tv to channel 6. Yes. Can you explain to me what are they talking about? Something about more jobs? The keystone pipeline? What’s that? What?! create 20,000 jobs in the U.S?! Well Dr. thats, thats a big number! But what? Can hurt the environment? They’re debating about whether to approve it or not. But those job can help the people. What’s the environment without helping the people in it first?

(looks at the picture and sighs)

We’ll find a way.. I promise ..

(listens back to what Dr.Browne is saying)

(Check the bottom of the page for the video of this monologue.)

Monologue #3: A new connection
(the scene is kelly in her room and flips the channel to new where it is said that the pipeline is being done in the area where she lives and is interrupted by the sound of her mothers downstairs. her mother is speaking to her associates about the pipeline on the phone kelly sits on the stair well and silently listens on.)
(In her room laying down when she hears voices)
What’s going on? Sounds like a crisis that needs to be saved? Wait.. I’ve never heard my mother so loud...
(moves and coches down to the stairwell and listens closely)
Let’s see. Might have to move? What?! No!!
(whispers to herself)
Oh, crap! I’m caught. Uh, hi mom. How’s .. you know.. stuff..
(sighs)
Are you okay?
Yeah, I figured. What’s wrong? The keystone pipeline? A little bit. I know that its a pipeline and that it can help create new jobs but at the same time hurt the environment. Its sounds pretty cool but I know since there’s an environmental issue that’s a big No No from us.  Oh wow, destroy. well thats a big difference from hurt. Well how? Wait, wait mom you’re talking way too fast! So, the mining of tar sands will worsen global warming, more polluted air and water, poisoned ground, a terrible climate, and extraction of our resources? But wait, if you’re aware of these things I’m sure the government is too so why are they still making this pipeline? Money! Of course! Like any of the other decisions made by the government didn’t involve money. Said to make many new jobs in construction? But only to polluted and hurt the people more right? There’s more? They’re mining it here?  Houston, Texas? Is that what you meant by us might having to move if things don’t work out? But that can’t be! Its not fair! ..  Oh Lord.
(walks over to statue and cracks as she begins to talk)
Dad’s dream was for us to live in a place that we can call home and not have to move around like he had to when he was child. He died working for us to have the “American Dream”..
(she pauses as she takes one last look at the birthday present statue that was given to her from her father and speaks with more strength within her voice
And we cannot fail him now!
(sighs and looks back to her mother)
Mom, I know I’m not usually all about the environment and your actions to pursuit its safety but this is much bigger than I thought.. So what can I do to help?
Appendix:
Some cool interesting fact about this pipeline is that it
-can help create 20,000 new jobs in the U.S.
- create a terrible climate
- create more pollution
- the oil that is being transmitted into that pipeline is tar sand oil which is the dirtiest oil of them all
- the U.S. is getting the oil from "a friendly neighbor" (Canada)
- It will be "game over for the ozone" when/if it is completed
-can help the jobless and unemployed but destroy the environment.

Descriptive Essay: "A Lesson Learned"

Posted by Betty Louis in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I smiled but only to hide what I truly felt inside. I was over my girlfriend’s house glad to escape the enclosure of my small spaced room. In her kitchen, about to eat the chinese food I bought I was happy to be with her. It has been a while since I’ve been over house to just hang out. Plus, I love seeing her little sisters smiles glow as we play together sometimes. But even with that joy and space to breath there was still that feeling I had inside boiling inside of me. It was my dad...

(Phone rings) “Hi dad!” “Hi sweetheart” “Are you still coming tomorrow?” “About tomorrow turns out I’m not going to be able to make it.” “Why not? What happened?” “My boss just called and said he needs me for tomorrow. But I promise I’ll see you another time, ok?” “Ok. I understand.” (Dead silence) “Mom’s calling me so we’ll talk later.” “Alright, I’m really sorry mama.” “Ok. Bye.” “Bye sweetheart” (Hangs  up) That was the dark cloud that rained over my parade yesterday afternoon. Its not like this was the first time I was “stood up” by him. But this time he promised me we’d hang out today. It was suppose to be our day yet I’m here instead. Don’t get me wrong I love Yourcenar and being with her but the disappointment that stirred up in my belly like a pot of boiling water was overwhelming. Almost every thought in my mind that involved what me, her, and what we could do today was put on hold. I looked down at my white rice shrimp broccoli delight and thought of what could’ve been, the fun we could’ve had, and the new memories we could’ve made if he’d just came...

But of course work is important too. I love my dad and the fact that he couldn’t take one day of work off to spend time with his own flesh and blood spent a piercing pain through my spine. After a while I realized it wasn’t just disappointment stirring up in my stomach it was hunger too. As I continued to chowed down trying to forget the sadness within me, Yourcenar came to the kitchen to keep me company, went into her fridge, turned & gave me that face. “So we have water, lemonade, milk, apple juice, fruit punch and... ginger ale. Choose your pick!” she said. I simply replied as always “ Well... um no, no, no, no, no, ohh maybe, NO!” This is a regular routine that happens every time I go to her house that I love never changes. She tries to offer me something to eat or drink and I deny all she has as much as I can until she forces it upon me. After rejecting almost every drink the last one that she brought out and suggested sparkled as I stared. Words Mata Goya written on it. I couldn’t help but muffle the word that would let her know she found my weakness “Eh, ok” I said under my breath “Finally!” Yourcenar replied. Pleased with herself she placed the drink right next to my plate of wonders and left me in the kitchen to drink it. I remember the last time I drank malta goya...

Staring at the drink in my mind I took a step back into time. Back to when I was 10 years of age. Shutting my eyes suddenly I was back in my room (which seemed much bigger at the time). The sound of their high and low pitch laughter, thundering in my head, taunted me. Feeling left out all by myself in my room while the grown ups laugh and have fun downstairs. “When will I be able to laugh so loud that I couldn’t care less if I was heard all the way from Arizona and have a never ending huge smile across my face?” I thought. “That good warm feeling inside? Its like getting a free ice cream with any toppings of your choice to cool you down on a hot sunny day! A feeling that I crave for!” With all these thoughts bouncing in and out of my young mind I slowly escaped from my big room of what felt to be hopeless dreams and warm comfort, tiptoed my way down the burgundy soft carpet stairs pass the living room where the adults have drinks in their hands watching t.v. smiling, through the dining room with a huge wooden table with snacks of chips dip, cookies and such on it, into the kitchen. Using that worned out look on my face that says “I’m so thirsty” on my parents to go downstairs instead of sleeping in bed I looked around the kitchen. “Looks like any ordinary kitchen you see on T.V. except its not all white” I think to myself.

My eyes holt to a stop at the master of it all. Our black fridge, one who carries all our the wonders that satisfies our hunger and thirst and covered with pictures and stickers that remind us of the good times we had. Opening it there’s not much but the usual plain boring undesirable food. Then I sigh for I feared this would be a long night that I would have to endure. But just then something yellow hiding behind the leftover lasagna. So I move the white colorful heavy bowl with the delicious cold smell of my favorite food over and to my surprise find just the thing I needed. Malta Goya! A pack of six small mini dark brown bottle filled with this fizzy, most satisfying, taste-bud tingling, dark brown soda, with a yellow label around the lower center of the bottle that says malta goya in big bold white letters with a big blue oval behind it. Malta Goya never ceases to disappoint me at the time. But I’m much older now and more mature to handle situations that include disappointment. As I traveled back into the kitchen I was in I took a sip of the drink hoping things could be easier like when I was 10 but to my failure all it did was allow my tears of sorrow to fall before my eyes. Making no eye contact I rushed my way into the bathroom. It was like a never ending river; my tears. I was shocked to see that i would burst at my friends house but i guess i couldn’t hold it any longer. Silently crying all i could think about was the excitement i felt when he told me he’d come. I should’ve known not to get  my hopes up..

But slowly I was realizing something. Of course disappointment is not a good feeling at all. Its like putting your trust into someone and the next moment watching them purposely throw it in the trash like it meant nothing at all. About dealing with such a feeling I personally like to first question myself, vent, and then forget about it. I like to question why such a person would do that? Was it my fault or did I do something wrong? Sooner or later I realized that you can’t completely trust anyone in this earth except for GOD. If I were to rely and trust in only him I would be alright. I like to put the blame on me (unless it really isn’t my fault) as much as possible because then nobody would get hurt from my anger except for me. I like to find out the mistakes and see what I did wrong so maybe just maybe next time I won’t encounter such a problem again. I like to vent as in cry or shout or scream or block the world out with my music to express how I feel. I like to forget about all of it and look on into the future for that is what should have all of my worries. I hate to waste my time thinking about something that happened a long time ago and allow it to take away my happiness. I realized that dealing with disappointment is a hard thing to do and that even with all the emotions that feel bubbling inside of you sometimes even in the worst situations all you have to do is forget about the stress, let go of the anger, JUST BREATH and let everything else fall into place.

So I got up, looked in the mirror, and washed my face. Allowing the cool waters to wash away my tears and drain my sorrow. Although I was still sad I wasn’t going to let it ruin my day with my best friend. As I opened the door with that thought in my head to my surprise she was there only to open her arms and give me a big hug that lifted my spirit a bit. It let me know that she understood and wanted to help...

Disappointment is a feeling we all go through and from my experience I can say that it’s not all that bad. Throughout my life I have gone through many experiences like this and it has taught a life learned lesson. Which is to not always put your trust on people and if so always have a back up plan. Which I now always do. I realized that we are humans and make many mistakes; we aren’t perfect. I feel like the experience of disappointment has taught me more about independence and being self-sufficient. I also feel like going through disappointment is a good thing in a way because without going through the bad you wouldn’t be able to learn from your mistakes, learn a life learned lesson and make sure your future is brighter because of what you learned.

STDs Or STIs: The New Crisis Of Today's Teens Blog Post #3

Posted by Betty Louis in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 9:53 am

Hello people of earth!!! My name is Betty and this is my last blog post on STDs Or STIs (if you prefer). If you click here you’ll see my first blog post on this issue which talks about why I’m discussing and interested in this topic and some information on it. If you click here you’ll see my second blog post on this which is mainly about more new information that I found out about this topic and graphics that show you more about the risks of it.

But even with all of this the one question that most certainly needs to be answered is What has been done about with and What can we do today to make it better?

From what I know to raise the awareness of this issue in each school in Philadelphia there is the health class that teaches the  about the causes and effects of STD, HIVs, and AIDs and it is mostly required that every student in the current school must take this class. But as I have researched about this and lately it says in this article that was posted this year on April 16 that lately schools have made little progress in teaching students about these issues. Which I am very disappointed in. I have just recently learned that April was STD awareness month. It says that it was made to call to the attention of young teens about the impact that STDs or STIs can have on you and there are some people that campaigning to raise the knowing knowledge of STDs and the importance of having safe sex.

In making a stand and a change I made a collage and two poems that I will print out and post around my school and as my teachers politely if I can hang it up in their rooms. The collage are for the ones that are more images that speaks to them and the poem is for the poem who feel that words are what has more impact and power and will actually read it.

I would like to acknowledge my close friend Yourcenar Destin with the collage and for reviewing my poems.

In these pictures the term Y.O.L.O is a youth slang word in a song by an artist named Drake referring to the saying "You Only Live Once". As you can see within the picture many teens take it the wrong way and end up making a big mistake that can change their life forever.

I made collage to reach out an explain the impact STDs can have on a young persons life thought pictures for people who are more about visuals than words.
Here is two poems. The first poem is what you can easily turn into a song if you like. It tells about the effects and STD can have too. The second one goes into more of a deep emotional term in which STDs take.
Its Called ...

"That one night"

that one night

who knew it could bring such a fright

at the time it felt so nice , so fun

now i have rashes all over my buns

STD aint got nothing on me ,

STI I have to say goodbye ,

because it happened to my ex

I surly wont be the next

so you say wanna live YOLO  ,

the next place you'll go is a doctors office for herpes oooo

I hope you take this seriously

because STDs are a pernicious mystery

Be careful of who your dealing with

for it is like taking the risk of tipping off a cliff

before you get yourself into a mess ,

go to the doctors office and take an STD test

"It was just for fun"

It was just for fun
nothing wrong
at least that was what i thought
he said he loved me and that i could trust him not matter what
am i Believed him
so Slowly i fell
i fell
down hard
so deep into a pit of darkness
I was so blinded by his sweet words of empty nothingness
i didn't pay attention to where i was falling too
After it was done
After we had sex
I convinced myself it was alright
everything was fine
I used a condom
or so I thought
Something in me told me it was wrong
but i didn't listen
But  just in case i went out
and bought a pregnancy test
And to my failure i was with child
i went to the doctor to see what i could do
and because of my stupidity
I also carried an STD
And because of me
My Baby
Will Have to Suffer with me

I buried my head in my face

Silently crying
 “Oh Lord Save Me”

STDs of STIs: The New Crisis Of Today's Teens Blog Post#2

Posted by Betty Louis in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 11:26 am

In continuation of the topic of STDs or STIs it was discovered that there are about 10 million different cases of STDs every year in the U.S. Now if you plan on having any kids note that an STD or STI can easily be passed down to your unborn child and not only that it can affect the development and growth of your child while it is in the womb in the process of such. Not only that in this website it states that “some of the various other health effects that can be caused by an STD during pregnancy include brain damage, blindness, deafness, chronic liver disease, pneumonia and even reoccurring pink eye.” Please be mindful on the great risk and consequences that having an STD can do. It will not just cause you the person carrying it great pain but it will somewhat damage the people that you know and love.

Doctors can try and fix or at least ease the physically suffering it contains but not the emotional and mental anguish it later brings. That you’ll have to deal with yourself. Using condoms are not completely ‘bulletproof’ from having an STD but use it any but before even thinking about having sex make sure that you are ready. As in physically, mentally, and especially emotionally and (if you are a teen) talk to your parents about this for one second can change the entire course of your life that you had planned. Then absolutely consider getting tested as soon as possible! Same for the partner.I don't personally know anyone dear to my heart that has such a disease but I have a big family and I'm not even completely know to half of them but learning about this came to my heart that any growing child/teen would have to deal with this. My personal thoughts on this are that parents should inform their kids about this massive issue. Even if it seems that they don't want to listen try and try again to tell them for they need to know. Wouldn't you rather them keep at least a piece of what you said rather than nothing?

The most common STDs among young teens is Chlamydia. Chlamydia the most fastest spreading STD among teens ages 14-19 in Philadelphia. It can really mess up the private organs of a women and other health problems. It can lead to a women not being able to have any children that how serious it is. The tricky thing about chlamydia is that you can have it and not even know because it has no symtoms whatsoever. This why so many urge for many youths to get tested! Good thing that Chlamydia can be cured and treated with antibiotics, but do you really want to go through all of that? Is encountering an infectious disease a part of your plan in life?

STDs or STIs: The New Crisis Of Today's Teens Blog Post#1

Posted by Betty Louis in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 11:23 am

In my English class we are focusing on a topic we are intrigued by, want to shout to the world to, and make a difference/change about it. We thought with our potential its about time that we put our voice out there and speak! Let the world hear the voice and see what really goes on in the mind of the educated youth in Philadelphia. This project is called “You and The World” where you develop a passion among a issues that you want to teach others about leading them to what your ideas ad thoughts about what we can do to change such a problem. I am here today to talk about the issues of STDs or if you prefer STIs.

I’m pretty sure almost everyone knows what an STD (STI) is if not an STD is a sexually transmitted disease or infections. Which you can easily catch if you are sexually active in any way with a partner that has the disease. I believe that in high school or near the end of middle school they have a health class that teach about these things but I also believe that there are some teens that don’t quite pay attention or take this issues seriously. That really bothers me. Next thing you know because they didn’t pay attention or cared they end up gaining such a disease. Of course they will have to deal with the consequences, suffer the pain that comes there way and live with regret.

The big issue that I have with this is that 1 in 4 teens between the ages of 14-19 have STD. It’s just not right! Hearing about this all I can think is why? Why is such a thing even exposed to us teens who should be focusing on more important things like what to do next with our lives not just to throw it away like some wasted piece of trash. It is said that if you are infected with such a disease the symptoms might show up right away or they just might show up in a week, month or even years depending on what kind you have. That’s why all mostly when people talk about STDs they always included getting tested as an option because you may think that your partner isn’t infected but you really never know until you see the real truth in reliable papers. Symptoms for both women and men are pain when you pee, around the butt hole, mouth, or private parts the inhabitations of bumps, blisters and such. If not treated or taking care of this STI can cause death I can’t imagine someone who could be my little sister/brother or older sister/brother having to go through this painful experience. I believe that this must come to an end and be solved for the sake of the generations that will soon be coming into this world. What do you think about this?

Negative Space

Posted by Betty Louis in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 9:17 am

What is negative space?

In art negative space is the space between or around the main object or image of the drawing.

Explain how you find the negative space in your cut out and your stool drawing.

I found the negative space in my cut out and in my stool drawing by focusing on the main image of the drawing and seeing that the air/space around it is just extra and unneeded pieces.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see in negative space because it allows them to concentrate of the most important part of the piece making the drawing more effective.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings?

Seeing negative space can enhance drawings because you first able to see the shapes of what you're drawing and work up from there. With the actual shape of the drawing your basically have the form of object that your working on.

English Benchmark: Macbeth

For English as a class we had to do a creative piece about Macbeth or Lady Macbeth to explain and show how the character changes as the story of the book goes on incorporating quotes that we picked from the book Macbeth. I did a scratch project on Lady Macbeth and how she changes dramatically. To access mine you have to click or either copy and paste the link below.

New Slide, Betty Louis

Posted by Betty Louis in Technology - Hull on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 5:54 pm
So for my slide I picked a solid black background to focus on the main picture in the slide. I let the color of the word be the same colors as the picture to draw attention to it. At which I did the same with the boxes that you see in the slide. the colors of the boxes brings out the colors that are in background of the picture. Basically in my slide there is a repition, pattern, and balance of colors and shapes.

Betty Louis: Q2 Media Fluency

Posted by Betty Louis in Technology - Hull on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 5:04 pm
Of course just by looking at my slide you obviously can guess that I LOOOOVVEEEE Christmas! I choose to put on my slide the subject of Christmas because it my favorite holiday of the year and one of my upcoming events that I am really excited about. The big words that I put in my slide represent that first few words that come to mind when I think of Christmas. The main word I put in the biggest size is family because for me it is the whole point of Christmas. I used the colors red and green because well as you all know they are the main colors of Christmas. I also put pictures of me with family/friends from past Christmas to show you what I look like and to also have a connection to the words family and love in my slide. In doing this project I have learned many things such as how to make the slide eye-catching to a point where you just go “that is just more than great!” You have to make it simple but not to simple that it seems baby-ish. Just simple enough for each and everyone of the audience to understand what you are trying to present to them. You must also make it seem fun and colorful with NOO paragraphs or long bullet points. With stuff like that people are just going to walk away from your slide or turn the other way. So if you want your slide or poster to be heard don’t do that. Put lots of pictures of just one picture that you think and edit it to make it look visual. Meaning it has be noticed that your eyes can’t stop looking or trailing around it. Like making the text of your words really big.  Use up practically all the space and balance out the use of objects in that slide. Also “don’t be afraid to bleed” meaning don’t be scared to allow some of the picture(s) in the slide to appear like it come off the edge to make it seem like it can’t fit. That’s actually good because with it looking like it can’t fit makes it seems like its really big and with things really big allows the slide to be more interesting. All of these things I did.

Goodbyes in Spanish by Sophie Deoliveira

Posted by Betty Louis in Spanish 1 - Bey on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 10:27 pm
What you need to know:

1. what some nice friendly goodbyes are in spanish and translated in English

2. why would you need them

3. which are informally and formal to use

1)
Adios- Bye (can use it for anyone)

Chao- Bye (slang)

Mucho gusto- Nice meeting you

Un placer- It's a pleasure

Encantado/a- delighted to meet you

Hasta Mañana- see you tomorrow

Hasta luego- See you later

2) You need these goodbyes to be able to end a conversation or at least be polite about talking to the person when you want to leave.

Here's an example:
https://dl-web.dropbox.com/get/Public/hi%2C%20how%20are%20you%2C%20bye.mov?w=e77c0810
3) Well basically everything else you can say to anybody except "Chao" is a type of slang word so you would want to normally use it to a peer or someone younger than you

Ex.

3) As you can already see that most of the months of year look and sound similar to the english version of the months of the year. That one of the ways you can remember the spanish version! Since they already look familiar it will be much easier to remember. Just use index cards and practice at home to get a goo vision of how they are exactly spelled and sound like.
