Q3 Art Portfolio

Posted by Esperanza Gonzalez in Senior Art - Hull - D on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 10:24 am

During this third quarter in Ms. Hull’s senior art class, everything has been excellent. In this quarter we had to create a water color painting, metamorphosis drawing, coat of arms, mosaic, and a wire sculpture . All of the pieces were given 100% of my time and effort, which can clearly be seen through the work. This quarter has been very tough and intense. However, enjoyed making every single piece.

My favorite piece of art work was definitely the water color painting. I love anything that deals with paint because it gives you the liberty to create anything. I love the technique that I created on the center of the page. I honestly didn’t think it was going to come out so good. The eye on the center came out beautiful! I wanted the eye to reflect different emotions which is why I used different colors. I made the outline of the eye very bold because I wanted to show intensity. Overall I thought this painting was very well executed, and definitely my best yet.

Quarter Three Portfolio

Posted by Desmond O'Donovan in Senior Art - Hull - D on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 9:14 am

For this portfolio, I used a lot of methods besides just drawing. The only drawings I did were the coat of arms and the metamorphosis drawing. I had never made those types of drawings before. As usual, animals were incorporated in each piece, even the coat of arms, which often feature animals. Many metamorphosis drawings also feature animals evolving from objects. The cats represented cats my family has or has, the snake around the sword is actually the official symbol for the O'Donovan family.

My favorite piece in this is the metamorphosis drawing, because it was fun yet challenging to create. I also got in add a Mandrill , which I love to draw. The paper clip sculptures were hard to make with that type of wire, they also did't look that good in my opinion. They seemed kind of insignificant, so I made two of them. A dolphin and a shark sort of go together. The mosaic ended up looking kind of good, it was really difficult to make. The watercolor wasn't that interesting to create because unlike the other pieces, I have done watercolors before.

Q3 Artist's Statement

Art is a constantly changing thing, especially when it comes to personal styles. Branching out and experimenting with brand new styles, while still incorporating familiar techniques makes for a variety of interesting pieces. Stepping out of your comfort zone and expanding what you already know about art allows one to not only improve as an artist, but ultimately figure out methods you never knew you liked, or were even good at, both in style and technique.

Q3 Artist Statement

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Senior Art - Hull - D on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 9:10 pm

If we’re still doing the whole real world lesson in quarter four this will be my final assignments for Senior year art. These assignments really pushed me outside of my comfort zone and I really enjoyed it. It actually made me think about making something that I wouldn’t normally do (adding real details, and using colors, using oil pastels) and something that’s not simple. I got so into the art I actually finished the main assignments early and did little ones on the side. . It was a really good chill, relax class where you could be open about who you are what type of artist you are. It was fun walking into class and just going straight to work not worrying about anything else. I’m going to miss senior art a lot, there’s never going to be a class like this and I'm always going to remember the memories I made in it.

My favorite assignments was the mosaic and all the water colors. One I love working with water colors, especially because they’re easy to blend with and make bolder better colors. You can use salt and cement and tape to make texture and clouds and it’s just fun to work with. The mosaic was a challenge because you had to cut smaller pieces to make your bigger piece. In the end it was worth the sticky fingers and the little paper cuts, my coffe cups came out real nice and it was really worth it. The hardest assignment had to be making a wire sculpture out of paper clips. It was the worst, I cut myself a couple of times and the little paper clips weren’t cutting it. It was a new experience for me and I learned and grew as a person from it. I made a crown out of the paper clips because it was girly enough like me and every princess needs a crown.

In the end I’m really proud of all the assignments I turned in the last three quarters and it was worth the time and energy I spent. Senior art has really taught me to be creative and think outside the box. I am really looking forward to the last quarter where Ms.Hull will be teaching us about the real world and what happens when you leave the comforts of high school. ‘Ve been waiting for lessons like this since the beginning, I think there should be mandatory classes in highschool that teach you how to pay bills and write checks, and be independent. Since we’re leaving for college soon it’s going to be a good learning experience for all of us.

Senior Art , Q2 - Brittany Cooper

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Senior Art - Hull - D on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 9:39 pm

So this quarter in senior art was very different. It was calm and collective nature. It was my first time drawing a fern, and it was VERY time consuming. If you take a close look at the picture you will notice that the left side has a short length of leaves than the right side. That is because when I first begun drawing the fern I focused so much on it being perfect. To the point where I took a ruler and measures out each width of the leaves on the left. After the second day of still dealing with the left side, I realized maybe perfection is not always the answer. I finished the left side with the ruler and started the right side free hand.

The second picture is the golden ratio collage. Honestly this had to thee hardest one out of all of the assignments. I say this because everyone defines the golden ratio so diversely that there's no wrong answer. So due to the fact tat there was no wrong answer I was stuck because that gave me numerous options. Surprising I came up with this on least minute. I decides to do a sea shell type swirl using water color. I know that water color blends so beautifully, so I knew that the shape of the shell would be a evolution of colors merging together.

I enjoyed doing the block prints the most because it reminded me of my freshman year of art. We did a block print of the Periodic Table. So it was easy for me to remember the steps to block printing. I choose to do a butter fly because what is better than a butter fly.. Nothing ! The colors I chose were inspired by the theme of my dorm room for when I go off to college!

I'm really excited to see what' s in store for Quarter 3 Senior Art :)

Senior Art Quarter 2 by Brittany Atkinson

Posted by Brittany Atkinson in Senior Art - Hull - D on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 5:44 am

This quarter in our senior art class was built on balance and nature. I choose to take that as add my own twist with social media and how it plays art in our every day lives. The golden ratio collage is something I had hardly ever heard before this class. When I was was assigned to make something out of it I couldn't decide what. After a while I made the decision to make the swirl of the ratio the "likes" of instagram going into the brain. The next project which is the block print, I kept my theme and did snapchat. Snapchat can be used to show the world temporary moments and flowers don't live forever. I wanted to express that and am proud of the final product. My favorite out of the all the projects would be the fern. The fern took a long time to create. From getting the shape right, adding the leaves, texture, and then inking it, it took about 4-5 hours to do and it came out beautifully.  Overall this was a short quarter but it was short and sweet and well appreciated.

Q2 Senior Art

Posted by Esperanza Gonzalez in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 9:39 pm

During this second quarter in Ms. Hull’s senior art class, everything has been excellent. In this quarter we had to create a golden ratio collage, a fern drawing, design a block print, and lastly do a negative space drawing. All of the pieces were given 100% of my time and effort, which can clearly be seen through the work. I believe that this quarter has been my best yet. I loved making every single piece because they were new things that I never did before.

My favorite piece of art work was definitely the negative space drawing. It featured nature, and I love nature. I personally enjoy drawing/painting anything that deals with nature because it gives the viewer a sense of freedom, liberty, and it’s also relaxing. I like the fact that it was black and white because it made the scene of the bird look very dull but intense. Overall, it was one of my favorite drawings so far.

Quarter 2, Avery Monroe

Posted by Avery Monroe in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 4:04 pm

I had a lot of fun with this quarters pieces. It reminded me of when I was younger in art class and we did block prints a lot. My favorite piece in this would have to be the Golden Ratio collage. I like the contrast of he pinks to the blue. It made me really happy to finish it because I liked it so much. To do these pieces I did a lot of research and it helped me to see what I could take from what I saw and make it my own. I guess other people were a big help in inspiring what I did this quarter.

I like this class a lot and doing this type of stuff because it shows me the kinds of things that I am good at and what I like to do. I get to learn about all these different types of art, and I am excited to see what we get to do in the rest of the year.

Quarter 2 Gina Sorgentoni

Posted by Gina Sorgentoni in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 2:50 pm

This quarter challenged me creatively. There was less work to do, so I payed close attention to all the pieces I created. One of the pieces I am most proud of is one of my sketches for the block print. The silhouette filled with flowers was a piece I worked on for hours. I wanted to create something elegant and almost vintage looking. This piece helped me improve my skill with drawing flowers as well as drawing people. Another piece I am proud of is my golden ratio collage. I wanted to approach the collage using items that follow the ratio. My final product was a forest of ferns on a snowy day.

Quater 2 Senior Art (Jordan Meriwether)

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Through my current work I wanted to begin stretching the limitation on what I could do for a project. I did not do the different checkpoints of this project as they were conventionally described. My first creation was to be a fern, the directions were very open. I decided instead of doing an average fern I wanted to do a particular form of a fern. I looked over many pictures and  found that ferns uncurl as they develop. I intern, decided to create a fern while it was uncurling. For my next project I was told to do a golden ratio collage. I interpreted the word collage in a different way that normal. Most people would just add special materials and pictures from magazines. Google defines a collage as “a combination or collection of various things”,  decided to do that through imagery. I gave the golden ratio a collection of many things: a lizard, a man, a pencil, and even a flower. From there I had a final project which was broken into multiple parts. First, I needed to create a sketch for something that would fit on a tile, it was supposed to be organic. In the end of my sketches did not interest me, so for the next section I drew something new. We were supposed to make a negative space drawing to eventually be turned into a block print. I chose to make a sketch showing a heart surrounding a plant, it represent my love towards nature. With the final block print I decided to do something tedious and difficult. I made two block prints, they both were negatives of each other, and wanted to get them both printed on the same paper to get a multicolored print. It took a minute, but in the end I was able to a multiple colored print that looked very nice. Overall, this project helped me experiment on how I could attempt to interpret projects more creatively. I will take this with me and use it to create more intriguing works.
