5 Minutes of Science -Brittany Cooper

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Science And Society - Best - E on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 11:58 pm
Science -  HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV is a virus that spreads through body fluids that affects specific cells of the immune system. AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV/AIDS attacks key parts of your body. Mainly your CD4 Cells. CD4 Cells also known as T- Cells are “helper” cells, which fight against infection . You can contract HIV/AIDS through unprotected sex/sex with an person who is infected. Women who are pregnant and tested positive for the virus have a high risk of exposure of infection to their baby. As well as any exchange of bodily fluids.

Society - There are five ways to get infected with HIV; through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breastmilk and rectal fluids. It is ILLEGAL if you do not tell your partner your sex status. In many states you can press charges for people who know that they are infected and fail to tell so. Approximately 1 in 7 people are infected with the virus and do not know it. In the USA , about 15 to 20% babies born to HIV positive women who are not taking Anti-HIV drugs are infected. In most cases HIV is spread to the baby in the last week of pregnancy. If the mother has a vaginal delivery and her viral load is high, that increases the risk of transmitted the infection. It is advised that women get C - sections to decrease the risk of transmission.

Self - You CANNOT rely on your symptoms to tell you if you are positive for HIV/AIDS, unless you get tested. And follow through with the test results! in another words, go back and ask for your results. A lot of times people will take the test but not go back for the results because they are scared of the outcome. Have safe sex too!

Brittany Cooper Capstone

After 13 years of swimming with Jim Ellis and Tracy Freeland, fro PDR which is now SAKA (Salvation Army Kroc Aquatics) I have acquired my water safety skills then the average person. As result in the summer I found a job that would best suit me! I would work for the City of Philadelphia Department of Recreation as a Lifeguard. Due to the fact I wanted to be a lifeguard, I had to take a Lifeguard certification class. This was a 4 week course, going to Lincoln High school’s pool to train. The purpose of this class is to help prepare me in a case of emergency, at work. We trained in 3ft of water and 12 feet of water (which is called a tank). I was taught how to rescue a patrons in shallow water and deep water. I was also taught how to properly perform CPR. As well as how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

During my second year working at Lonnie Young Rec. Center. I had a to save a 2 year old baby! It scared the crap out of me .. Literally! It was at that moment I asked myself, “Why doesn’t he know how to swim?” I also thought how did he get so close to the water with out his parent knowing. I decided to make capstone on the importance of water safety. I choose this because kids and adults too, are scared of the water or don’t know their limit.

QUARTER 3 ART

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Senior Art - Hull - D on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 8:50 am
This quarter has been pretty fun! Its started off rough because this time we had two art history's. But I understand why she did it like that. My favorite piece of art would be the mosaic piece. At first I thought that we would be using pieces of glass. But when we asked Mrs. Hull, she said we were using construction paper. For my mosaic piece, I did a purple octopus, because purple is my favorite color. This project brought back memories of when I used to do mosaic pieces in elementary school. My second favorite was the water color!. I absolutely love love love to water color. But what I didn't know was that there was different ways you could water color. I only thought who ever you get the paint on there is how it's done. To know that there are names for different techniques was pretty cool. For my water color pieces I did a combination of 4 pieces split into two. I got one whole piece of paper and split it in half. Next I taped the two half pieces in another half to create four different sections. I split it up like that because I did not want to do four big pieces.

My hardest piece of art is my wire sculpture. Honestly I do NOT know how people get this stuff to bend perfectly. I tried to do the easiest thing which I thought was to do my name. Then I realized my name has 8 letters, so the back up plan was to do my middle name. Which was semi successful, I manage to do 4 out of the 6 letters. I could not get the "a" and the "e" to cooperate. SO it say "Nish" instead of "Nishae". I wish the wire was a bit thicker so it would bend how I want it to bend. I'm excited for next quarter, learning about banks, and loans and how all that good stuffs works.

Senior Art , Q2 - Brittany Cooper

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Senior Art - Hull - D on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 9:39 pm
So this quarter in senior art was very different. It was calm and collective nature. It was my first time drawing a fern, and it was VERY time consuming. If you take a close look at the picture you will notice that the left side has a short length of leaves than the right side. That is because when I first begun drawing the fern I focused so much on it being perfect. To the point where I took a ruler and measures out each width of the leaves on the left. After the second day of still dealing with the left side, I realized maybe perfection is not always the answer. I finished the left side with the ruler and started the right side free hand.

The second picture is the golden ratio collage. Honestly this had to thee hardest one out of all of the assignments. I say this because everyone defines the golden ratio so diversely that there's no wrong answer. So due to the fact tat there was no wrong answer I was stuck because that gave me numerous options. Surprising I came up with this on least minute. I decides to do a sea shell type swirl using water color. I know that water color blends so beautifully, so I knew that the shape of the shell would be a evolution of colors merging together.

I enjoyed doing the block prints the most because it reminded me of my freshman year of art. We did a block print of the Periodic Table. So it was easy for me to remember the steps to block printing. I choose to do a butter fly because what is better than a butter fly.. Nothing ! The colors I chose were inspired by the theme of my dorm room for when I go off to college!

I'm really excited to see what' s in store for Quarter 3 Senior Art :)

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 183

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Being Human - Giknis - C on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 8:21 pm

Be aware by reading this passage you have opened your mind into what could be a parallel universe from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road ..

Holding the boy in his arms rubbing his thin black hair.

Its going to be okay.

Okay ?

Okay .

Close your eyes and go to sleep.

Inhale. Exhale. His eyes are closed. The man lays him down. Feel the breeze that flows across his body. His dreams begin to take over his thoughts. Hear the ocean breeze that runswards the sand. A familiar voice in the distance.

Honey.

Honey, come on.

You’re going to miss the kite show.

Without any words exchanged, the man walks towards her. Holding out his hand, waiting to touch hers. Twirling her around in his hands. Laughter and love fills the air. A countdown from a crowd full of people.

Five.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

Eyes all over the crowd light up like stars in the sky.

Turn around and close your eyes.

Okay.

Covering her eyes, distracted by the noise from the crowd around her he says turn back around. Down on one knee he was with a little black book. Before the question could be asked the answer came unfold.

Yes I do.

The man go up from one knee and kissed her. Everyone around him became mute. He was the happiest man on earth. Holding hands walking towards  where the ocean meets the sand. There was nothing in view except for dim path of light. She walks towards in extending her hand.

Come with me.

He takes her hand nothing left but footsteps on the sand as their souls walk towards the never ending pathway of light.

Although my part never made the cut, here is my rationale to explain the choices I made for my project ..

The placement in where I choose to start my creative piece  is significant because in the book “The Road”, in  boy’s mind his dream was so strong that instantly he awakened  full of emotions. Almost as  if the dream was really real.  It is interesting because to the man he was unaware that the boy unknowingly had a dream about the man dying. I choose to do a scene about a dream because in the book dreams are nothing but an illusion of reality. Dreams in this book have multiple meanings to them. The dreams are essentially a parallel universe, however each dream varies on the outcome.  Whether it is negative or positive or whether the man or the boy posses the dream. It reveals a new fragment to the plot of the story.

The plot for the creative piece was very simple. In the book “The Road” the man shows his affection towards the boy in a  oddly way. It comes across however as reader as severely over protective. I wanted to recreate a time in the man’s life where he was once carefree and happy. His wife who is signified as “her” in this section is not mentioned often in the actual book because, she leaves in the very beginning of the book. It is unknown of what really happened to her character, although you have a clue. Therefore I created this flash black in the man dreams, where he was head over heels in love with her. The setting is on the beach, which is a familiar setting in the book. However there are people all around, caught by the attention of the kites in the sky. The man proposes to the women and their full of bliss. But the twist is at the very end it says “He takes her hand nothing left but footsteps on the sand as their souls walk towards the never ending pathway of light.”, this sentence right here is SUPER important. I say this because it lets you know that this is not real. The man and woman are no longer in existent,as it says their souls leave their body.  By context clues you can infer that the man and woman are following the never ending light which would be considered the gateway to heaven. My McCarthy-esque word is runswards which means to run forward and or to run towards.

Quarter 1 - Artist Statement - Brittany Cooper

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 12:49 pm

I must say when I signed up for senior art, I had every intention that this class would be BEYOND boring. I seriously had a change of heart. From the time Mrs. Hull gave the a timed schedule to working on each piece I knew this was going to be a good year. Every class period songs are played to inspires the mood of the room. Having art allowed me to share and express my talents not only through paints but musically as well.

Having to mix colors for my ceiling tile would be my biggest challenge. The first piece, The Code Name: Kids Next Door. I used vibrant colors to highlight and make each character stand out. The Charcoal Still Life was a difficult piece because I had to create a line a focus to incorporate all of the piano keys. Glittering the pumpkin was pretty easy. I used a light colored paint to insure that you see the pink glitter but also draw attention to the under tone. The self portrait, was a bit of a challenge. I say this because I have such around face and high check bones, that it was hard for me to get every detail. Making it evenly proportioned was also a tricky part, but I managed to get it done.

My favorite piece of art would be my personal painting, which I did on a ceiling tile. It was a good idea not to prime the ceiling tile because it gave it a natural look. To get the texture of her hair, I dampened a dishwashing sponge. Dipping the sponge in paint, in a circular motion, I created the highlighted curls in her hair.

Who Get's to Choose .. Me or You ?!

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 9:11 pm

A compromise  between The Taming of The Shrew and Coming to America,

Similarities in finding love, obtaining wealth, and family can be found in the 1988 movie Coming to America and the 1590’s  book the Taming of the Shrew. It was normal in the Elizabethan era for women to “aspire” to get married. The woman had very little, to no say about who her husband would be. Marriages are normally arranged by the parent to bring “prestige” or wealth to the family. Marriage became a family decision as opposed to an individual decision due to the fact that marriage was no longer a choice. In the Taming of The Shrew, Katherine  set the tone for her and Petruchio. This shows that at this time period woman did not have say and married by force the family.Today, however, the situation is more complex, In modern time the man and woman have the ability to choose who they want to marry , and also have the option to not marry a lot without being shamed for it.

“ Call you me daughter? Now, I promise you

You have showed a tender fatherly regard

To wish me wed to one half lunatic,

A mad-cup ruffian and a swearing Jack,

That thinks with oaths to face the matter out.”

(Act _:Scene_:Line__-__)

“ You're right! Get out, see the world.

Enjoy yourself.

Fulfill every erotic desire,

and in 40 days, you will marry Imani.

- But, Father...

- It is settled.

May I have your attention, please?

The wedding will proceed in 40 days.

You may go home now. Good night. “

Prince Akeem has met his “Queen to be” Imani. When in conversation Imani was trained to do his every command. He uses the excuse of  “ he’s never been any where else but Africa.” As a result upon his father’s consent he allowed him and Seemi to go to America. Little does his father know that the object of this plan is to find him a wife of his own choosing.

“ Fie, fie! Unknit that threat'ning unkind brow

And dart not scornful glances from those eyes

To wound thy lord, thy king, thy governor……

Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,

And place your hands below your husband’s foot:

In token of which duty, if he please,

My hand is ready, may it do him ease. “

(Act 5: Scene 2: Lines 152-195)

For this quote you can see that Katherine is not happy in her marriage. She has come to the point where she has expected the fact that her father just gave her away. To marry Petruchio without knowing his true intentions. As a result of Katherine is under the impression that the only way to be happy with her husband is to train him to her pleasing.

Prince Akeem as found a wife that suits him for him. His father was understanding and approved of the marriage. Although he was not truthful of his reasoning for going to America, his outcome was positive.

In the book The Taming of the Shrew, Baptista willing gave Katherine away to marry Petruchio. Being unmindful of Katherine’s feeling about the marriage, as a result katherine is unhappy in her marriage. What these portrayals show us about society's attitudes towards courtship/dating is that regardless of the time period there will forever and always will be a parental consent. However courtship and dating are to different things. However the resulting action is to be married .

Quater 3 - Change The World Project

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 11:41 pm

Analytical Essay:

As life goes one you learn to adapt to your surroundings. Only you determine your future, based by the actions an individual takes to focus on what is in the present to look forward and improve for a better future. The challenges you face in the long run will be worth the effort. In the book “The Things They Carried” Tim O’Brien has a series of characters that go through the process of self change. This is expressed with two characters by the name of Dave Jensen and Lee Strunk.

“ Dave Jensen and Lee Strunk did not become instant buddies but they learn to trust each other “. When Dave & Lee are just settling into an unfamiliar environment for the very first time both men are distant to each other. In the Chapter “Enemies “ they had got into a fistfight, over a missing jackknife. It became a brutal one, because Dave Jensen was a way bigger man he had an advantage. He punched Lee Strunk’s nose until you heard it snapped like a firecracker and broke.  “ Over the next month they often teamed up on ambushes.” Dave Jensen & Lee Strunk were distant to unknown resources they had surrounding them. For the first time they would have to rely on someone other than themselves to operate in combat. Gaining each others trust would be a major key of compromise.

“In late August they made a pact that of one of them should ever get totally f*cked--a wheelchair wound -- the other guy would automatically find a way to end it”  In a way this is a test to their relationship, to have the word of trust . As a friend it is the individual’s position  to respect the wishes and the opinions of each other. For such an individual may say things that at the moment one would desire to hear emotionally. Yet until the individual is put into a situation where the pact one thought was just for emotional support trust. The same promise that an individual thought would not have to phase at such unexpected timing, requires rational reflection. Immediately becomes making a decision between life or death.

While in combat Lee Strunk had gotten shot in the legs . His legs were amputated from the knee down. In and out of consciousness Lee Strunk frantically talks to Jensen.

“ I’m serious “

“ But you gotta promise. Swear it to me -- swear you won’t kill me “

Jensen nodded and said , “ I swear “, and then a little later we carried Strunk off to the chopper. At the moment the pact was no longer a sense of emotional trust. It became a physically action that was determined yet, suddenly declined then you are put into the situation of taking what you agreed on serious.

“Jensen reach out reached out and touched the good leg. “ Go on    now, “ he said. Later we heard that Strunk had died somewhere Chu Lai, which seemed  to relieve Dave Jensen of an enormous  weight. “ In a way he felt the guilt of not following their pact. However at the same time he was grateful that he didn’t have to bear the burden of potentially having to kill his best friend. I feel as though neither Dave nor Lee expected to have to face that moment of putting one out of their misery as fast as it happened. At the moment the pact was a sense of emotional trust. Until it physically happened then you are put into the situation of taking what you agreed on serious.

In order to change the world, an individual has to start the process of change within themselves first. Being able to adjust to a different environment that you are not used to is a way of change. From one change to another, someone can evolve into a improved person, because the certain adjustments they make to do their routine in a new way.

Narrative Essay:

When you’re introduced to the transition phase from elementary school to middle school, then middle school to high school you notice an immediate change. You are surrounded into a brand new environment with people you are just meeting for the first time, you tend to automatically shut people out because you are unknown of whether they have negative or positive intentions for you. The day is almost over and I am in such anticipation in going home. You watch the clock as the big hand moves towards 3 o’clock. You walk into the hallway hoping no one runs you over and knock you down. You look down so you don’t make eye contact so you won’t attract attention towards yourself.

That night as you sit at the dinner table your Mom and Dad bombard you with a variety of questions. “Who’s your teacher?”, “What classes do you have?”, did you see somebody you recognize about things and people you don’t ever have a clue to who they are. You lay in bed exhausted because all day you’ve been given directions and asked to do this or that.

The second day isn’t any better, as the day goes by little by little you begin to wonder who are the classmates that surround you. As you try to remember their name to ask them a series of questions like , what’s their  favorite hobby, if they have siblings. You take a leap of faith and decide open up about yourself to your classmates. Starting off small, just little fun facts like you favorite color your school .

The moment you recognize a familiar face but can’t remember where. The teacher says

her name and it clicked, a mutual friend. You approach her with so many questions about people you would think she would know about. At first you can tell she is weirded out because she doesn’t even remember you. Yet and still you stand there hoping she knows who you are talking about. The elephant in the room disappears and you meet with smiles and laughter as you discuss how who knows who from where. You develop a close bond with her, as if she knew you all along. The teacher gives you your roster, noticing that you and her have all the same classes but two. Already you plan the year out hoping you too still are friends by then.

You think to yourself how could two different personalities share such same interest. Three months has gone by, you’re still learning your roster and what class is where. You’re relieved because  you have you friend who is always there to keep you on track. You’ve built a buddy system for each other. Your were the dynamite duo, whenever  you see one you see the other. If one of y’all were absent the class would know who to ask! You complain how hard school is when you forget that at the time you were only a freshman. And that you could not make it without your close friend.

In the end of the year you get life changing news. You think the world is coming to an end, your best friend is transferring to a different school. At first you thought it was just a practical joke. It all became surreal by the end of the year. You start thinking you are losing the one closest person you have at school. You spend everyday with, goof around in class with and even go home together with. You promise to never forget each other no matter what . The summer becomes to an end and you think she’s forgotten about you.

What you thought was a permanent goodbye turned out to be a new beginning of a even stronger friendship. You got a surprised called from her the first day off school. Turns out that her school is only right around the corner from where you live. SO you’ll be able to see each other often. When you get to school you get asked the same question “How do you feel without her”, “Do you miss her” and “what if she forgets about you”  You got a surprised called from her the first day off school. A sign that she hasn’t forgotten about you. From there you text, call and face time each other everyday. You switch roles, instead of you going over her house she comes over yours. As you grow older you experience what it is to be a teenager together. You always have her to talk to even if she’s a phone call away. But lucky I see her just about every weekend. We mature and grow with each other to succeed the highest achievements in life .

The double standard rule according to dictionary.com is “any code or set of principles containing different provisions forone group of people than for another, especially an unwrittencode of sexual behavior permitting men more freedom than women.”

There are certain expectations that society already has set out for individuals. Whether a man or a woman, gender roles will always have a judgement on certains actions. The common double standard rule affects women just as much as men. An example of the double standard rule is the controversy of the physical interaction of men and women abusively. Its in unacceptable for a man to put his hands on a woman. But okay for a woman to put her hands on a man if it means “defending” herself.  It's about the double standard that actually punishes men for domestic violence MORE than women.

Due to the fact that society portrays men in a certain way he is bound to act tough and obtain control at all times. Researchers believe that there is a universal gender role towards men. It is said  all men are to server as a protector and a provider. Researchers also believe that there is a universal gender role towards men. It is said  all men are to server as a protector and a provider. As a protector they should defend what is theirs. As a provider they should insure the safety and take care of those whom belong.

When being an athlete they are sponsored by many high endurance companies. As an famous athlete in a public eye, conducting oneself accordingly is a must.  are responsible for the actions as individual and when associating with others from another group. Why is it acceptable for a woman who was charged with a assault keep her NSL career but Ray Rice charged with assault as well is at the process of losing his job.  This brings you back to domestic violence. According to the MintPress News, women are three times more likely to be killed or seriously injured by their male counterpart than vice versa. However more than  830,000 men are a victim to domestic violence every year. Every 37.8 seconds a man is a victim of domestic violence. In 2001, The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health surveyed about 14,320 people between the age of 18 & 28, a statistic was discovered. When committing acts of domestic violence more women than men were responsible( 25% vs. 11%).

Hope Solo, 33, is a Women’s National soccer player. Her position on the team is goalkeeper. She has been goalkeeping since 2000. In June 23,2014 Hope Solo, was arrested on the charger of domestic violence according to the NY Post. She allegedly got into a physical altercation with two family members. It is told that Solo was supposedly intoxicated at the time of the altercation according to police. One victim, identifying as a 17- year old nephew, who bleeding from a cut from his ear.  When she attacked her nephew punching him in the face, while saying that his was “too fat & crazy” to be a pro athlete. Another victim as her half sister who’s was left with a cheekbone that was swollen and purple. Who tried to break up the fight. Hope Solo has pleaded not guilty to two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence. She is scheduled to go to trial in November. If she found guilty she can face up to 6 months in jail. With all this being said the U.S Soccer in still allowing her to play in U.S -WNT.

Ray Rice, 27, is a football player for The National Football League. He is a running back for the Baltimore Ravens. He was drafted in 2008, and has played as a Ravens player since 2008. On March 27, 2014 Ray rice was charged with 3rd degree aggravated assault. He was caught on camera punching his the Fiance now wife unconscious in a elevator. This is prior to his arrest of domestic violence on February 15, after having a physical altercations with his then fiancée, Janay Palmer at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, NJ according to ESPN  as well is at the process of losing his job.

However a recent video posted by TMZ shows that Janay Palmer hit Rice while walking in the elevator. When they enter the elevator there was a exchangement of words. At that point Rice leans his face towards Palmer, which lead to Janay to shove Rice away. any his finacée by her arms out of an elevator, laying her on the floor.  ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbwTMJroTbI → Link to the Video ) .

As a result according to NBC Sports, Ray Rice is currently suspended indefinitely by the NFL. However Ray Rice is filing for an appeal on the indefinite suspension. The decision towards suspending Ray Rice was appropriate . However he should not be suspended indefinitely. I say this because Hope Solo is being charged on similar accounts and still is able to keep her career. Just because you are a woman does not give up the right to be able to be physical with a person in a negative way, as to a man. Domestic Violence should not be viewed based upon gender but upon acts .

The Double Standard

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 10:20 pm

When you first meet someone you think wow he’s really cute, or OMG he has a great personality and he’s tall (that's always a bonus). All the great characteristics run through your mind at you in an instant. You see him in the hallway every day, you’ll walk right past him. Yet you don’t speak because of the nervousness you have when he’s around. Then one day you would of never thought you’d be the one asking him out.

Mike is a senior, who’s going to be graduating at the end of this year.. Lauren is only a sophomore so she doesn’t know what to expect as the new school year begins.  When Lauren first met Mike it was one of those awkward moments, like really awkward. Like being the only person who was wearing pink to a all with party. She was dancing in the gym and he just so happen to catch her in the act. Lauren was dancing and without her noticing Mike walked passed the gym window and stopped. He looked right at her, there Lauren was dancing with friends. Mike then walked in the doorway of the gym. Gazing upon who ever else was in the gym then focusing on Lauren. Mike says “ damn that was good!” with a smirk on his face. She reacted as any other girl would, she was embarrassed. “ You seen all of that?! ” she asked, he replied yes. At once everyone starts laughing to kill the awkward moment. Then one by one Gabriela, Faith, Asmera & Jordan all friends of Lauren’s greeted Mike with a hi and a hug. When it was Lauren’s turn to speak she approach him in hesitation, unknowing what he would say. Yet she gave him a hug and all he couldn’t stop thinking about her dancing.

The next day Mike & a friend were sitting on the hallway ledge. Lauren walked into the doorway and there went Mike. As his eyes followed her the curvy shape of her body, he smiled as she turned the corner. That same day they ran into each other in the hallway, this time Lauren was with Faith & Jordan. Mike was bold and asked her for a hug and she approached him with opened arms. As he released her from his arms so she could walk back to class, he said aloud down the hallway “ this my boo and y’all don’t even know it!” Her faced changed from a smirk to a big grin as she walked back to class. However Lauren was already talking to someone that went to a different school named Jeremy. Jeremy and Lauren went to middle school together so it was a mutual feeling. Jeremy started talking to Lauren in the middle of July early August. Mike & Lauren began to get to know each other. They would say hi to each other in school & even half late night facetime calls. To the point where everyday they would fall asleep and wake up and still be on facetime.  Mike even began to pick up on details about Lauren here and there. Like her body language and her facial expressions.

However Mike was well aware that she was talking to Jeremy. Jeremy had a inconsistency when it came to communication. He had such a busy schedule during a weekday and the weekends, so it was hard for them to even see each other. Mike on the other hand would give her the time of day any day of the week. Mike would hold conversations about Jeremy even when he felt uncomfortable because he had not yet told Lauren that he liked her. November came and they became good friends. Sending cute goodmorning & goodnight texts messages,  When things would get sketchy between Jeremy & Lauren, Lauren would be frustrated. She would get to the point where she wanted to just vent. Sure enough Mike was there to listen to her hardships, and her complaints. Even if it meant the thought of her being so broken that she wouldn’t trust a boy ever again. He got to the point where Mike couldn’t hold it in any longer, he had to tell Lauren how he felt.

One day they were on facetime and Lauren brought up the question “do you like me ? ”. Mike was hesitant to tell her how he really felt but, he tried to brush off the question. He avoided the question and kept the conversation going. A month went passed and Lauren had developed feelings for Mike. Mike was so nervous to tell Lauren how he felt, that he would of never thought that she liked him. In his mind they were just close friends. Really really close friends. That same week Lauren pulled Mike over to the side and said “will you go on a date with me?” His face lite up in excitement. Mike was almost hesitant to answer because  Mike was surprised that Lauren “liked liked” him. “Yes, I’d loved to” he said with a grin on his face. That day they went to the park. Mike leading the way he said “Let’s sit over here”, “Okay” Lauren said. “I have a question”

“okay, go ahead and ask away “ said Lauren

“Do you think its weird for a girl to ask a guy out on a date, instead of the guy asking?”

“ NO! Not at all. You ?”

In response Mike said “ No, but I was trying to tell the guys that, but they seem to not listen. “

“I don’t see what the problem is. If a girl wants to ask a guy out instead of the guy, I say good for her because then that lets you know that she is really interested. That’s a total double standard people expect for a guy to ask a girl.“ Lauren explained.

“ Back in the day the man was obligated because he is like the alpha. However today’s generation, the tables turn because women are in equal power just like men so anything is possible” said Mike.

“Well I’m glad we had this conversation. This date was really cute, maybe we should do it again?”

“ For sure, Next Tuesday ?”

“Okay”

As they walk away from the park together holding hands, they both leave with a better understanding of the double standard rule.

Bias Police Brutally

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 12:53 pm

“The police show their bias when they… ” use excessive force with a suspect if they do not follow direction when told partially towards young african american males.

In the Leon Ford Jr. incident the police officer pulled him over for a routine traffic stop. He  was  stopped for 19 minutes they demanded that he see I.d. One of the officers,  Office David Derbish, who walked onto the right side of the car began to search it. He assumed to believe that Leon was in possession of a weapon. Leon was then asked to get put the car three time.  When he did not move one of the police officers began to violently pull Leon from his vehicle. In the  moment of fear Leon drives. Officer David Derbish, who is in the car,  shot him four times in the torso & the car crashed.

Leon Ford Jr.’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, say “they hoped he would have died so he couldn’t live to tell the truth” .  Also his attorney Monte Rabner, stated “ It’s clearly police procedure that if you see a gun and you think the individual has a gun you draw your gun and asked him out of the car …. there way distant for him from the on set,  if you look at the beginning of the video just from the time he would take his license from him it was not just taken like a normal human being it was ripped from his hand.”  This says that the police already have a bias set. That because he is a young african-american male that he is a automatic suspect. There they treated him like a suspect. According to attorney Crump a normal traffic routine stop takes 7 minutes, yet Leon was pulled over for almost 20+ minutes.  “Not only he was unable to see his parents and on his death bed but he was shackled to the bed & paralyzed.” stated Attorney Rabner.

On January 7, 2013 was the coldest day since. Darrin Manning  was taking the Broad Street & Girard to play in a school  walking home from school, says Victoria Joyner, school chief executive. Manning and teammates left the subway wearing hats and scarves, provided by Victoria Joyner. According to police   A boy was sexually assaulted by a female police officer. He was walking home from school  & the officer stopped him. He was told to remove his scarf so he can be ID. A surveillance camera that caught the police officer in the act changes every 10 seconds, so it’s uncertain as to what really happened. One segment of the video shows Darrin being pushed against the car. In the another clip it shows what officer Ramsey says “ a struggle with officers”. Another segment shows Manning being surrounded by police officers. When the female police officer began to pat-down search and pulled his genitals. During the pat down the female officer grabbed Mannings testicles. She squeezed them so hard that it ruptured. He was then arrested and kept in jail for 8 hours. He was then released and taking to the hospital where he had emergency surgery. As a result he is under watch care of a doctor. As told there is a possibility that he may not be able to reproduce. Although he is the victim he is now being charged with reckless endangerment of another person, simple assault and resisting arrest.

I disagree with how the officer went about this situation because you should never put your hands on no one. My bias about this is that you shouldn’t put your hand against anyone. She should have not put her hands in his private area. That is something you are taught in first grade - third grade. You were taught that when someone touches you, you tell an adult. In this case because young Darrin  Manning was being sexually touched/assault by a police officer, someone who you are suppose to trust, is now being charged with  reckless endangerment of another person, simple assault and resisting arrest.

A Mother's Reflection

I do not understand. What did I do wrong as a mother, as a caretaker. The last thing I wanted Jada to do is follow in my foot steps. I remember when I first met DeAndre. I was 17 years old, he was 19 at the time. And we were walking down the street and he said “Imma make you my girl forever.” Me being  young and in total bliss believed him. A year later I got pregnant with my son Keshawn. I remember when I first told DeAndre, I was scared because I did not know how he would react. It was life changing. It was no longer us out anymore, it was us and the baby. I knew DeAndre was “selling” but thats how we made ends meet.

JADA ! JADA ! I know you hear me talking to you. Get ya ass down stairs.  What the hell is this . . .  a pregnancy test?!
Is this yours because I’m surely not popping out no baby ?
Are you pregnant Jada ? …
When did you take this? How long ago?
Well I’m waiting, you know what don’t answer. Take ya ass up the steps.

Another mouth to feed. Who the hell she think she is trying to bring life into the world.  Me & DeAndre were young and dumb back then. With Keshawn selling like his father, he’ll end up just like him. In jail or in  hearse.
[ Yells Jada’s Name ]

Come down here now we need to have a talk.
When did you miss you last period?
Two months ago ?!
You mean to tell me you are 2 months pregnant. When did you think you were going to tell me, before or after the baby was born. You know what I’m done yelling, explain how you got pregnant.

Well what is his name? And I do not want no damn nickname I want his government name. Oh Jordan huh, Jordan who ? Jordan Nelson? And who is he, and what is his occupation and who is his mother? He’s a senior and he traps. Dammit Jada I am  trying to get your brother to get out of that trap life and you trying to bring a child in it. I want you to do better than I did.

Why did I not notice all the signs. Her eating habits were crazy, one minute hot cheetos, then seafood and after that some icecream. I thought it was her on her grow spurt. The constant wanting to sleep the days and nights away. I knew that day when I got a call from school the nurse said she had “morning sickness”. I was in denial, in denial to the fact that my only daughter is a now a statistic like her mother. I wanted her to be better than me.

I did not know she was even sexually active yet, she only 15. She should be focusing on those two D’s she has in English and World History. Always worried about someone else. “ Oh mom, can I this”, “Oh mom, can I that “, “Can I get this “, “can I have that.” All I hear is can I, can I , can I . Where is her appreciation, it was not easy raising two kids when I was 19. I was a baby having a baby and now she is too.

Jada have you decided on what you are going to do with this baby ? I will let you keep it on the conduction that you graduate school. I will take care of the baby while you are at school. But when you come home you will have to face reality. You are not in this on your own, but you will be responsible for your share in work. For this is a life lesson for you as well as others.

Q1 Benchmark : Code Switching

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 9:45 pm

The role of the individual in systems is to understand their surrounding how to act accordingly.

The definition of code switching according to Dictionary.com is “ the alternate use of two or more languages or varieties of language, especially within the same discourse“ Code switching is when you change the way you talk based on the atmosphere of people around you. Code switching can be done by anyone without you even knowing. When you introduce yourself to someone the first thing you look at is how they address themselves or how they present themselves to you. For some people code switching is a social thing. Meaning they feel obligated to do so without being judged  based or misunderstood.

Saturday mornings I take a STEM - Program called Urban Youth Naval Engine Program. This is a 22 week program for students from grade 9 -12, encouraging students to pursue a career in the science, technology, engineering and or mathematics field. Within my 22 weeks of attending this program, I met a person by the name of Mr. Chuck. He looked liked a normal man, about 5’7½’’, mid 50’s. He was a laid back, cool guy. When he introduced his self he said “ Hey what’s up my name is Chuck Williams! “ No big fancy title just plain old Mr.Chuck. As he began to talk he told the class about his childhood. He would talk he would use the words “ yo” and “yea”, informal language.

Informal language can be described as abbreviated language,  such as “slang”. Your informal language is spoken around the people you know and are comfortable with. At  times when you code switch you  catch yourself doing it without even knowing it because you are a custom too it. For example when you talk to your friends you greet each other with a “hey”, “wassup” or even “yo”. When you ask for something you “say pass me the...“ or “get me this and that.” Its like you’re asking for something but you’re not really asking, you’re telling.

The definition of language according to Dictionary.com is “ a body of words and the systems for their use common to people who are of the same community or nation, the same geographical area, or the same cultural tradition.” Language is a form of communication. No matter where you are around the world, there will always be a language you have to adapt to. When you are born one of the first things you are taught is a language. Whether it is formal language or informal language.

Formal language is proper english.  You tend to speak formal language when you are talking to someone of high power, like a teacher or principal.  When you are in school you tend to be accustom to using formal language. Your formal language is a form of politeness. Words such as “please” and “thank you” would be an example.

While listening to Mr. Chuck, he then formally introduced himself as Dr. Charles “Chuck” Williams. Ph.D. I was highly surprised because of how he presented his self. This man dressed with jean shorts, a hoodie, and a fitted hat cocked to the side would be a doctor. He told his how he struggled being in a single parent home.

Is code switching good or bad ?

When you are in a professional setting, you code switch. When you apply for a job you have to go to a interview so they can evaluate you in person. When you introduce yourself as any individual, you say “Hello my name is..”, you wouldn’t say “Wassup my name is ..”. Your goal is to set a good impression on the person who is interviewing you so you show that you are qualified for the job. By a person code switching there are able to change their way of language to have effect one person. Code switching is not a bad thing, because you’re goal is to leave abbreviate impression about your self.

The average teenager I would say code switches like I do. Text message “language” is almost code switching. You abbreviate formal words to make them short and easy to understand.  The way we speak to our friends will never be the way we speak to our parents. If we did it, it would be to a certain point but never go overboard with the way we lead into a conversation.

What is the relationship between language and power?

The relationship between language and power is strong. You could know every language in the word and have to power. You could have all the power and only know one language. The objective is to have your voice be heard and understood through many of languages. It is ideal to learn more than one language in life. Throughout Pennsylvania every high schooler in the Philadelphia School District has to take a mandatory two years of spanish. I think this is encouraged because as you grow older and mature you begin to meet new people from all over. The key lesson that is being too here is communication. As long as you can communicate with someone in some shape or form that is the power to your language between one another.

What might the language you use say about yourself ?

The language I use would say about me is that I code switch when needed. A conversation between a friend and I would be informal because we are kids we see each other as a equal level of authority. We value each other the same because we are equal. However  if I were to be texting my mom it would be in a different mind state because she is of higher authority than I am. I believe I code switch because in general the way you talk is how people will identify you. If you ever go into a line up room when you under arrest, you are identified by appearance and voice.

In conclusion to this personal essay I would agree that every person sometime in there life has code switched before. You will never know you do so unless someone is telling you that you did it or you have someone record you.

Double Dutch - IRP Project

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 8:16 pm

The title of the book I read was called Double Dutch by Sharon M. Draper.  She is mainly an author for teen books.  Sharon M. Draper is an award winning author. She has been on the New York Times bestsellers list for the book “ Copper Sun”. Sharon M. Draper is also a Coretta Scott King award winner for the books such as “Copper Sun” in 2007” and ” We beat in the Street”.  Also  in 1998 she wrote “Forged by Fire” which was also an award winner for the Coretta Scott King award.

This book is about a girl named Delia Douglas. She has a passion for double dutch. Delia, her friends Yolanda and Charlene attended on competing in the World double dutch Championship. The World double dutch championship is when kids all over the world from places such Taiwan, Germany and Canada face off in a battle to win first place. Delia practices at the YMCA gym with Yolanda. Delia notices a boy name Randy, he’s in her class. they both have one thing in common.

As they interact with each other inside and outside of school they gain a bond with each other.  Never the less to say that neither one of the has exposed their secret to one another. The conflict in the story is person Vs. Person. I believe this because in the story you Have a boy named Randy who would be her potential boyfriend and a Girl named Delia. They both share the same interest. Each one has a secret that neither are willing to share upfront. But in the end they conquer their fears and give in. Randy discovers Delia’s secret, she can’t read. Delia discovers randy’s secret, His dad was missing for weeks and haven’t heard from him since.

Over all my favorite character is Delia because she shows courage. From this book you will take away that “ the road remains wide open, while your dreams are alive . Only fear can block the way. “ (   "The road remains wide open . . . rainbow by halfpasteleven on Etsy." Etsy - Your place to buy and sell all things handmade, vintage, and supplies. N.p., n.d. Web. 6 June 2013. <http://www.etsy.com/listing/102018796/the-road-remains-wide-open-rainbow . )  Fear has two meanings 1.) Forget Everything And run or 2.) Face Everything And Rise. The choice is yours.

I do not believe I can relate to this book because I never really Had a something that I was ashamed of. Yes, I have had fears but I had conquer them. For example I used to be scared of getting on rollercoasters. Then when I first got on one I was so scared.  but afterwards I felt the rush and now i’m not scared  anymore. So Actually I can conclude I can relate.

Overall i thought the book was Excellent. Strong points of the book would be how the characters were portrayed. Each character created the right amount of suspense. You could also understand and identify the characters personality. However it lacks in humor. Setting a tone for a book is very important because a reader will pick up the theme or message when everything is properly balanced.

I would highly recommend this book. Especially  to teens how do not read enough because if you set time aside for just reading for 20 minutes a day. I assure you that you will feel glad that you did it.

You And The World : Agent of Change - Teen Pregnancy

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 11:31 am

My name is Brittany Cooper, over the past seven months I have been working on my You and The World Project. I had a very difficult topic for my age which was teen pregnancy. A agent of change is a way you would make a difference.  For my agent of change I made posters about teen pregnancy. Stating general facts about the topic. They would be found all the school and throughout the hallways.

I was highly hesitant to pick what my agent of change should be, because of how opinionated my topic is. I felt as though, I might not be in control. I was unsure as to what I was going to do, weather I was going to interview people or even do a presentation. But I wanted to hands on so I decided to make posters and post them around the school. The posters would contain information from my previous blogs. A problem that occurred for me was making sure I don’t repeat or overfill the poster with information.

After doing this project I learned that one mistake can change your life . Getting pregnant at a young age, is not worth it. When you get pregnant in your teen years you give up everything! You have you grow up fast and have to take responsibility for your actions because it is no longer about you. I believe my topic makes teens think twice about having sex. That abstinence is the safe way.

I see myself in the community as a person who is always willing to educate themselves. Also as a leader. A positive person who is proud to be a person who is all for abstinence. From this project I will take a different look at the level of maturity people go through. That there is a time and place for everything.

Negative Space Reflection : Brittany Cooper

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 9:14 am
A.) Negative space is the contrast between the light and dark space in an object. It is almost it's shadow or reflection.

B.) 1.) In cut out, once you trace and cut out your piece, the "scraps" or leftover pieces from your cut out is the negative space. (2.) In my still life drawing I would simply draw the object as if it was just by itself. Then shade all around the object so that all you see is the object.

C.) It helps a artist to know negative space because negative space is like drawing with a certain amount of light.

D.) Yes, because negative space can make a object stand out form its surroundings.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Art - Freshman - Hull on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 7:01 pm
a. One thing that I learned that I did not know was that everything is and can be viewed different depending on the view.

b. This helped me because it allowed me to determined how I would draw the shape.

c. I would have tried to draw the whole room and not just one wall. I would have had added more color & more detail.

d. Do not, I mean do not worry about eraser marks. There are going to be plenty of them for you trying to make things perfect.

e. The link that Mrs. Hull posted on how to do a basic one point perspective room because it gave me a idea of what the layout should be.

Macbeth and His Lady Macbeth

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 1:58 pm
1.  This project is about the emotionally roller coster of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth ‘s emotions. This is a creative extension of the quotes for the book Macbeth.

2. I decided to do something simple. Something that would be easily understandable. I used a all white poster board & free hand drew all the pictures such as the crown, the snake and sword, and the bloody hands.

3. Just making sure everything matched up was difficult because certain quotes were hard to describe through drawling. I had to take my time and not rush.

4. One thing I am most proud of is the fact that I was able to actually complete this project. I was not confident in this at all nor did I have a solid paln.

5. One thing I would have done differently is I would have done a board game. I think it would have been a more hands on with the auditions.

6. I learned that almost everybody had very similar quotes. Also ideas on the structure of there projects.

7. I learned that I actual enjoy doing hands on creative projects. Yes it’s a lot but, for me it was very relaxing. It was something other than typing on a computer.

YATW #2 - Teen Pregnancy - Why It's An Issue

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 10:12 pm
Teen Pregnancy : Why It’s an Issue

In 2011 mainly one-third of male and female high school students are sexually active.  seven out of ten teens have had sexually intercourse by the age of 19. Being sexually active at a young age makes you high risk for sexual transmitted diseases (STD’s) . An sexually transmitted disease is from generally from having sexually intercourse.
One out of four teen girls have sexually transmitted diseases do to either unprotected sex or from someone who is passing the disease. There are many different types of STD’s. The most common would be viral and bacterial.

Bacterial Diseases include the following:
1. Chlamydia
2. Gonorrhea
3. Pelvic Inflammatory
4. Syphilis

Viral Disease include the following:
1. Genital warts
2. Human papillomavirus
3. Hepatitis B
4. Hepatitis C
5. HIV/AID (Human immunodeficiency virus infection / Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome)
6. Genitals herpes

Peer pressure plays a big part in an individuals life. Studies show that boys are more in favor of being pressured to have sex when they are not ready to from other male associates. One in three boy between the age of 15 to 17 admit to have being pressured to have sex. As to the 23% of girls .

Teens now of days think that not just because you use protection you should not have to worry about the consequences. Well they’re wrong! You should not depend on the condom, for it is only a 50 -50 percent chance that it may protect you from getting someone pregnant.

Five Reasons Why A Condom May Fail:
1. The condom was not properly used
2. Breaks during intercourse
3. Not manufactured properly
4. The expiration date has come to pass
5. The condom was damaged after manufacture

The Proper Use of A Condom:
1. Stay away from tearing or breakage when you remove from the concealed package
2. Unroll the condom over the firm penis
3. DO NOT use an oil-based lubricant for this will damage the latex
4. Be sure to always to take off the condom as soon as possible after discharge

You should always expected the unexpected because you never know what may happen if you decide to have sexually inter course at not just a young age but at any age. The younger the age the more risk because you would be in the stages of puberty. Therefore your body is still growing. Waiting to have sex is the right thing to do. There is a time and place for everything you do in life.

Q2 Benchmark ( The Skin I'm In by : Sharon G. Flake )

Posted by Brittany Cooper on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 8:37 am
Brittany Cooper 01/08/13

Over the past two months I was given an assignment to read a independent reading book. In the beginning of the process I was struggling to find a book. My English 1 teacher Mrs. Dunn suggested that I read a book called “The Skin I’m In“ by Sharon G. Flake. Considering I don’t like to read she said this would be a adjustment for me.

This book is about a girl name Maleeka Madison III. She attends McClenton Middle School, she in the seventh grade. This girl is verbally being bullied. As a child going through the stage of puberty being so that she is thirteen and in middle school. Children tend to be more sensitive to what others have to say. This character in the book was captured. I think there could have been more detail about her childhood life.

A weakness in this book would be that there are thirty-two chapters. The chapters are only six or seven pages to each chapter. This could be both an advantage and disadvantage. A advantage because the shortens some of the book considering it has thirty-two chapters. The disadvantage is that the less pages some people what say the book could possible lack bits and pieces of each chapter.

This book is to prove that you can be something. You work form the bottom and make your way up. In the fifth grade black girl was being bullied by a white girl.  The white girl did not like her simply because she was smart and the teacher favored her. Throughout the black girl’s fifth grade year this girl would be called names & even would get in trouble with the because she would try to stop the another girl from messing with her. It got to the point where there had to be a parent teacher principal conference with that girl and her mother. She was then removed from the school. The girl who was being bullied had no more worries. Being verbally abused or bullied is serious. Known from experience , you should think before you say.

Overall I would give this book 4.5 stars out of 5. I say this considering I do not like to read this was adjustment to me because at first the number of chapters scared me. But then as I began to read the book I adjusted to the amount of pages. I would recommend that middle schoolers such as seventh and eighth graders to read this book. To better insure their knowledge about bullying.

Media Fluency - Brittany Cooper

The reasons I choose this slide because its mine! The font I have my name in is Jazz LET. I think this is cool because it is not a normal font. The background and my name represents my two favorite colors. All the different words scattered around my slide describe me. Although I think this looks off, we're here to learn from what me make of things.

Slide 2 The Remake PDF
After all the criticism from my peers. I decided to change my whole slide. For my background I used a different layout provided by keynote called Watercolor. Although my original slide was bright blue I thought it would be better to tone the colors done. I made my name the focal point of my slide by picking a navy blue to contrast over the soft blue. I believe this slide has come a long way, compared to my original one.

My You and the World Project - Teen Pregnancy

Posted by Brittany Cooper in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at 10:43 pm
Hello, My name is Brittany Cooper. I am 15 years old, and attends Science Leadership Academy in downtown.  This year My English 1 class and I are doing a you and the You and the World Project. This project is about making a change/difference in the world to better yourself and others.

My You and The World Project is on teen pregnancy. I choose this as my topic because this a “trend” in teens.  All over the world more and more “ Babies are having babies.” Meaning underage kids are having kids. This is an important topic to be aware of because there are so many ways to prevent pregnancy.

The emotions  of a pregnant teen . (Pain, Regret, Worry, Dread, Anxiety, Dishonor, Embarrassment, Fear, Apprehension, Hesitation, Humiliation, Shame)

More teens now than ever teens are dropping out of high school mainly because of teens getting pregnant. Graduations rates of students that get pregnant are liable to increase because of the increase in population in teens do to having children. By making the decision to have sexual activity you must know the precautions and consequences that follow up.

Pregnancy is something that can be prevented. There are many ways to prevent teen pregnancy, here are the following ways:
1. Abstinence
2. Condom
3. Hormonal
4. Barrier
All of these are ways to prevent pregnancy. Did you know that 3 out of 10 teens girls will get pregnant before the age of 20.

While research my topic I came  across an article. This article is about teen pregnancy rate in Pennsylvania. I’m using this article because it is very helpful to my topic. Philadelphia has the high teen pregnancy rate in Pennsylvania. There are about 389,000 teens in Philadelphia and about 24,470 teens that gave birth.

Teen pregnancy is something that should be talked about. You have to understand If you have any questions about sex talk about it. It is extremely important that you educate your children about sex education. For they need to understand with action there is a reaction.

Brittany Cooper's Home Network

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 12:47 pm
2. Comcast is my I.S.P which is also connected to internet, who is a server to the World Wide Web. The cable wire is connected to the Modem. The modem provides internet connection also known as wifi. The Wii, two I-phone, two HTC One X's, as well as my Mac Book Pro & my 8500 hp Office Pro Printer are connected to the wireless router.

3. I learned that your home network is more than just internet. It is a World Wide Web. You might not know it but a lot is connected to the internet Such as phones , computers, I-pads etc.

4. Something that people need to know about having ISP/Home Network is that it is expensive, depending on who the server is. Also that everything that you is forever on the internet. It never goes away, even is you think you "erased" it.
