Abstract:

Hello, my name is Jordan Prince Meriwether. I am a senior student at Science Leadership Academy and eventually hope to move into a career involving Environmental Science. My final school year was full of new responsibilities and work, but the biggest project was the Capstone. Throughout this school year we were given the major task of creating a project that both reflects ourselves and the core Values of SLA, them being inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation, and reflection. My personal interests, as stated, revolved around the environment, but I needed to get more particular. Before this project, I was an intern for the Fairmount Water Works and developed an interest in water quality, so I decided to focus on that over the course of this project. I had also partnered myself with the Water Works throughout this project and they would consistently be by my side ready to help me comprehend information, while supplying me with the tools I needed. Currently a pH kit is the best you’ll get when it comes to determining water quality, the problem is they are too subjective making them unreliable. Therefore, I believed the best way was to understand water quality is to look at the organisms that live in it, if they can not survive in their own environment what makes you think you can survive ingesting it? So my project was based on the variance between diatoms across multiple varied pH environments. I would take samples and see how they compared.

Annotation:

This states a specific instance where the diatoms were used in a project. The scientists look for a correlation between diatoms and the patchiness of a lake in a desert. The idea is perhaps the microorganisms grow under certain circumstances. Personally, I feel this site is the most advanced in terms of vocabulary and outside references. I do not know a lot of the information involved in this project mainly due to it talking about other microorganisms, but still much of it is still understandable. Overall, this paper is harder, but it does still reference a few known pieces of information and even some interesting new information.

Annotation:

This site gives a brief overview on the stone Diatomite, which is a stone made up of the dead remains of diatoms. They go over the structure and texture of it. I used the site for information of what diatomite is used for. It has been used for filtering, padding, and many other applications. The reason this site was chosen is do the the simple information given, it makes sure to given only the essentials. Which is all I need. If it went too in depth I would get lost in the information. Overall, this site gives a good explanation for diatomite.

  • Conger, Paul S.. “Diatoms”. The Scientific Monthly 73.5 (1951): 315–323. Web.

Annotation:

This paper is quite detailed in its analysis of how diatoms work. While appearing to be long, it actually is easy to understand and goes deeper into themes seen on other sites. It goes over the abundance of these creature, explaining how they are built to survive everywhere. They even touch on some of the darker aspects to diatoms, their ability to kill fish and over produce in water are both discussed. Even other theories are brought up throughout the paper giving more insight into the world of diatoms. Overall, the site adds so much to the my already vast information. Giving deeper insight than ever before.

Annotation:

Maria Potapova sent me to this site when I was studying the different types of diatoms I found in my samples. This type of diatoms was found in the sample and nd through the site I was able to learn more about the creature and how it works in its environment. The formation of these creatures may vary as you see them while some to look normal in their straight line formation some hold more of a disconnected square appearance.

Annotation:

This site details the work of Michael Gross, who has studied the mysterious world of diatom evolution. The man state that they might have developed from endosymbionts, but even so how they grew into what they currently are is unknown. Their distribution is easier to explain though, do to their ability develop in any where there is water and sunlight they could spread quite easy. From their he also explains different advantages of their silica shells, most of which have to do with their internal organs. The site basically states that though their are so many of these creature little is known about them or where they came from. Still though they have a powerful effect on our ecosystem and everything around it.

Anne Harvey is one of researchers at the Fairmount Water Works, as well as has been my mentor during the duration of this project. She has lead me to meet multiple outside sources as well has given me her personal information. Without her I would not know what a diatom is, let alone complete this project. Her outside resources also allowed me to be able to be able to connected with many knowledgeable and helpful individuals. She is a source mainly do to her help with finding and helping me understand many points of information throughout this project. She was pinical to the completion of this project.

Annotation:

This site speaks on the overall effects diatoms can have on the rest of the world. It details how they can do so much even though they are so small. They have a strong impact the carbon cycle in on the world. As well they control the the production of nitrogen as well. Their effects are imperative to the progression of most gases throughout the world. This site really gets into how important these creatures are to our environment. They even touch on genetics, implying that these creature vary greatly in how the aspects that they have. Intern, not only can this site be used for showing their impact of gases in the air, it also shows genetic changes for these diatoms.

Annotation:

This site has a focus on the silica of diatoms, primarily how they change. They note both how the shell can grow out or break down. They also go further and discuss the environments around them, mainly the salt and fresh water. They state how as the shells dissolve almost completely in the ocean and either turn to rocks on the ocean floor or dissolve into water. The most interesting part, structurally speaking, is how they left many references, I could use them for more sources if necessary. Overall, I think this source is very informative on the topic of silica, I will be able to go more indepth than anywhere else.

Annotation:

This was a site recommended to me by a Maria Potapova who was helping me to identify diatoms. We noticed a solid amount of these creatures clustered around algae and debris in the water. Looking over the site I had leader about how these creatures are build much differently than the average diatom being smaller in length. This site allows me understand how this organism both effects the environment and they are effected by the world around them.

Annotation:

This site details the basic world of diatoms. Intern they are able to give great insight on how the world works in general.  They explain basic structure, environment, classification, and even physiology of diatoms and how they work as microorganisms. They do not just limit themselves to organism’s functions; they also go into the history about their changes throughout life.  From their vegetative division to them dying and leaving behind their shells this site has it all. Finally, this has greater pictures of varying diatoms. Overall, this site gives good general information to compare to others I find for validity.

Annotation:

When I first read this paper I believed that it was a simple overview once again, but I found that the it held a very strong effect from showing the applications of diatoms. Many of the past and present uses for diatoms can be seen in this paper and it is really well made. It can also be connected to other sites in its explanation of how the environment is affected by diatoms. Overall, I will use this site to explain the different implications and applications diatoms have on the world, as well, I will connect it to the rest of the other site on the environment.

Annotation:

This site once again overviews diatoms, but it goes mildly deeper than the previous sites. They go over their effects, uses and even evolution; the difference seems to be they focus on their shells. They go into detail how the main point of the shell’s glass appearance is to let in more photosynthetic light, as well this adaption, while not entirely unique, shows very specific qualities through their species. Overall, the reason I had chosen this site is its ability to convey information about a particular aspect of diatoms, but still show more widely varied aspects of these little creature.

Annotation:

This details a paper written by a few scientist on the idea of how diatoms affecting pH. This is kind of the exact opposite of what my project is, given I wanted to find how pH affects diatoms. To see the exact opposite make me question which one actually affects the other. I personally have seen change in my diatoms, intern I question how they know this experiment is valid. Other than that, I do see potential in its explanation on how diatoms change the pH. Overall, I can see a lot of interesting questions coming out of reading that and explaining it to fellow skeptics.

Quarter 3 Portfolio

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Senior Art - Hull - D on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:06 am

With a new quarter comes new challenges, and this quarter was full of new. The amount of mediums I consistently work with is typically limited to one, sketching. This quarter we went over many new mediums for me like wire sculptures, painting, and even mosaics. This variance was very effective in making me have to think of more creative ways to express the ideas I had for the project. The wire sculpture was probably the most difficult for me given my inability to understand how to accurately pose the figures. Other than that I feel all of the methods were done with very clean details and designs. Overall, I feel my work and understanding of these newer mediums were better understood after finishing this project.

My personal favorite part was the Coat of arms, it gave me a moment to look over family insignias. I knew my family had a Family Crest  which I used as the basis for my design, it was open in design and had small details that made it look clean. I wanted to replicate that feeling for anyone who saw my coat of arms. Of course, I added my own details, I feel the stripes added a bit of character.

Quater 2 Senior Art (Jordan Meriwether)

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 1:32 pm
Through my current work I wanted to begin stretching the limitation on what I could do for a project. I did not do the different checkpoints of this project as they were conventionally described. My first creation was to be a fern, the directions were very open. I decided instead of doing an average fern I wanted to do a particular form of a fern. I looked over many pictures and  found that ferns uncurl as they develop. I intern, decided to create a fern while it was uncurling. For my next project I was told to do a golden ratio collage. I interpreted the word collage in a different way that normal. Most people would just add special materials and pictures from magazines. Google defines a collage as “a combination or collection of various things”,  decided to do that through imagery. I gave the golden ratio a collection of many things: a lizard, a man, a pencil, and even a flower. From there I had a final project which was broken into multiple parts. First, I needed to create a sketch for something that would fit on a tile, it was supposed to be organic. In the end of my sketches did not interest me, so for the next section I drew something new. We were supposed to make a negative space drawing to eventually be turned into a block print. I chose to make a sketch showing a heart surrounding a plant, it represent my love towards nature. With the final block print I decided to do something tedious and difficult. I made two block prints, they both were negatives of each other, and wanted to get them both printed on the same paper to get a multicolored print. It took a minute, but in the end I was able to a multiple colored print that looked very nice. Overall, this project helped me experiment on how I could attempt to interpret projects more creatively. I will take this with me and use it to create more intriguing works.

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 277

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Being Human - Giknis - C on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 11:02 pm

This piece of writing is a personal interpretation of what would have been from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road had it not been edited:

Creative Piece:

The fire continues to pierce the dense night even as the boy sleeps. It's soft glow surrounds his head casting a shadow onto the man. Yet he still feels its warmth. The gun lies in the dirt between the two. One real bullet remaining. The man lays staring at the golden reflection of the fire die down through its silver barrel. He feels a pounding on the back of his eyes as they climb up to the boy’s face. A soft quiver jolts through his hands and gets more sporadic as he reaches for the gun. He holds it loosely by its bloodfelt grip. The gun tumbles its way to the boy’s forehead. He takes aim. The gun drifts from position to position across the boy’s forehead. Powerless to hold a single target. He released his grip and droped his arm. He looked into the face of his sleeping son. A lone tear drifts down the man’s cheek. He shifted himself to look at the ever present void above him. The glow of the fire sits in the corner of his eye. You’ve taken my son from me, the man croaked. Or maybe you’ve always had him. The man looks to the yellow glow. I guess we have to thank you for the bunker and the boat, he says. At least I know you’ll be safe. The man closes his eyes. He feels the soft glow of the fire from the direction of his son. It soothes him to sleep.

Below is an explanation of the different factors that make up the piece above and how it would fit into the overall story:

The Rationale:

The passage above is meant to round off the world of the book The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. I chose to add to the end of page 277. This moment is the perfect opportunity to insert more information on the father’s acceptance of his inability to kill his own child in the name of protection. On the page itself the father is dying and he notes how his son is an honor to all prophets. I feel this to be the moment that the father is most understanding of the implications of his son’s value as an important figure. The page overall sets up a great contrast between the son’s importance and the man’s fleeting life, helping to expand on the conflict. Should the man kill the boy to protect him, or allow him to live to spread his hope to the wasteland?

I began by drawing a connection between the boy and the fire, mentioning how fire keeps going even as the boy sleeps. The fire itself is a symbol of hope and positivity, and throughout the story we see how this boy spreads this through his kind actions. The man also believed the the boy has something special in him as well, but he often alludes it to be in a more spiritual manner. The fire is portrayed respectively as a light in the dark, alluding to the boy being a hope in the dreadful world. Even the lifeline of the boy is shown to be connected to the fire. As the man looks at the gun, to kill the boy, and  the fire is seen dying in its reflection.

The story then moves into developing the character of the man,  justifying his later acceptance towards the predicament. He attempts to shoot the boy. Every step the man took from picking the gun up to aiming it is dreadful for him, to reflect the father's feelings towards attempting this action. Even when he has the gun aimed, his sickness makes it hard to aim. This man comes to the conclusion that God is protecting the boy from his death, of course this is kept open to interpretation as to why he could not kill him. The man believes since his son will be protected from anything, including his own father, he no longer fears for his safety.

The scene shows the hopelessness of the situation and how the man must accept his son’s responsibility to carry the fire. This rounds out the character more and explains his latter actions to accept his son’s survival even after his son wants to die with him. In the end he sleeps sure his son will be safe.

Q1 Ten Week Art Project (Jordan Meriwether)

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 10:48 pm

I wanted to try something new. In the wake of feeling powerful emotions it is best to react on them artistically, for me I had a lot of strange days some were great and others were lonely. I worked on these emotions and tried to wide them into my works to truly make something special. We instructed to draw a picture each week of this quarter, in no specific order, I chose to test myself and see how it works out. I went forward and started on a high note making the Infinity Gauntlet, which was featured in many Marvel comic books. I had a comic for reference and in my sketch came out better than I had hoped, it was very detailed though so I would need to be careful about the transfer to ceiling tile. In the transfer there was a small problem the original image was much too big for the tile, so I had to make some minor adjustments. Overall, My tile came out Clean, I feel like I was able to capture a variety of colors and give the object a bit of dimension. To complete the more open-ended task of choosing my own drawings I chose one to be and emotionally interpreted piece (dread) and the other to be a based off of a famous scene in the classic horror movie Nosferatu. Next we move on to largest of the projects the still life, it was simple yet detailed from my view, I wanted something that gave a new point of view to the idea of a still life. Then there is the Jack-O-Lantern, which I made a bold choice on; I did not color in the face. The choice was made since naturally the human eye is attracted to the White of the face giving it a bit of emphasis. The Halloween costume was simply a zombie in a tattered suit and a top hat, I think it had really gives him some character. My self-portrait is probably done less professionally since this is the first time I ever worked with chalk, it is bright and happy to emphasize the proudness of my completion of it. Overall I feel this first quarter was quite successful, I hope to try twice as hard in the next one.

A botched Internet by Jordan Meriwether and Osman Bangura

Our website:

http://abotchedinternet.weebly.com/

To respond to a project of this magnitude is a lot, but I will do as I can. We were instructed to create a fake piece of literature that would encapsulate something about the current era. We chose to discuss a fake movie that would discuss the ideas of social acceptance and critic the ideas of using plastic surgery and social media. There were three parts to this project we had to make in response to this movie: Cultural Fabric, Audience Response, and Press Release. Each aspect would need dive deeper into what this creation was.

The Cultural Fabric was supposed to relate different works to our movie based on its central theme of social acceptance. We chose to make it an overview of what watching the movie is like and would relate different texts to our movie through references thrown into the text. We felt this gave the reader a better understanding of the structure of the book since they would have other works to compare it to.

The Audience Response showed how people reacted to the movie’s conception. We chose to do a Rotten Tomatoes critique of the movie; each of the reviewers would give their own personal opinion on what the movie what supposed to represent and give a rating. We felt this would add to what we felt could be interpreted from this fictional work showing a wide variety of views from the offended to the understanding.

Finally, the Press Release was meant to show what the first thing the people would see from the movie, this could be anything from a trailer to an commercial. We chose to make two alternate posters since we felt the visual aspect would give us a chance to talk about the deeper meaning behind some of the scenes in the movie. We discussed the symbolic nature of the film and even went into detail on the different aspects of the movie.

Overall, I felt this was a great project giving us a chance to create something big and explain our understanding of it.

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Infographic)

(Download  it to get a better view)

Introduction:

This infographic spotlights the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, I takes a look at one of the reasons the U.S. dropped the bomb on Japan. It also discusses the bombs themselves and they are compared to show how they both were extremely dangerous. I chose to focus on this topic since it was an extreme case of American intervention (on civilians no less) that ended up killing hundreds of thousands and even after the bombing damaged the land.

Carrie- Stephen King

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in English 3 - Rami - D on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 11:56 pm

This book made the great horror writer Stephen King what he is today. The book Carrie written by Stephen King tells the tortured tale of a social outcast named Carrie White who has the ability of telekinesis. Throughout the story she is pestered by schoolmates while being abused by her unstable Christian mother. You can see throughout this try that all of the characters have realistic motives for example a character disliking the the concept of sex because she was raped. In fact one of my favorite characters in the story was Carrie’s Mother, she has the most backstory and does the most provoking in the plot, as shown through her increasing violence towards Carrie.  As you go through the story you find the different troubling backstories, they turn characters who appears purely evil to people who are suffering themselves. The build up is also amazing, as you move through the story you may hear about a character trait that may not seem important, but they lead to extremely plot centered.

Though Stephen King is known by many to be an amazing writer this book had almost not happened. King originally wrote for Men’s Magazines and barely got by with his earnings, for his family and eventually he thought of making an actual novel. He took inspiration from people from his high school and began writing about a shy girl with telekinetic powers. After many rewrite he threw this story away convince that he could not write from the female perspective while being a man. Only through the persuasion of his wife did he actually attempt to finish it. He then attempted to publish his book about a girl with telekinetic powers and was rejected 30 times, until finally he was published by Doubleday. King from then would publish about 200 books of varying genres including contemporary horror, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy.

The story itself is great, it tells a timeless tale that can still apply to things happening today. The story takes place in 1979, which is approximately five years after the date it was written. The story is told through notes, documents and even through the third person from the view of Carrie, which in King’s later books do not use with the exception of the third person view. The books varies in how scary yet intriguing it can be; you fear the character, but you want to know what happened to them to make them that way. The book’s main focus is on building character and not on gore not scare you. It does not make the horror monster into a villain, it more like a normal person is being pushed to do evil things. King also breaks the norm by keeping the book focused on what is happening and not what it looks like, but instead King kept it tame and clean and until the extreme ending. What is amazing though is that unlike many of King’s Novels Carrie got not just a theatrical release, but has had two remakes, a tv series, and even Broadway musical adaption.

Overall, this book is probably one of the most important in Stephen King’s Career, it has come so far and done so much. Carrie is a good book to introduce someone to horror and also a good start to the horror franchise. This book does not make the mistake of scaring you with surprising visual, but instead leading you in and making you feel uncomfortable as you move along. King’s works have helped him contribute to what horror is today, changing what the villain of the story can be. He has kept fans of his stories very happy, and even to this day he is still producing his books and changing genres.

The 2014 National Day of Writing

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in English 3 - Rami - D on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 2:46 pm
What should people know about my community, well that’s a very good question, what is their to know? Philadelphia is not known today for doing very much, it is the very definition of  a has-been town. Much like a war veteran who was cast back into society after the war all we have is old stories of our glory days! For example, we were the capital of America for a time and we were the place where the mail system was invented, but now we are nothing special. It is sad when the best part of a current city is just a food they produce, I mean Cheese steaks are ok, but really what else is there to be proud about? What has Philadelphia produced that makes it so much more extravagant than anywhere else? All this would not really bug me if not for the huge amount of praise residents give this city, if you can not name any current historic events or people making a change today then how can you say Philadelphia Still is a great place? Perhaps I am being too hard on Philly, to be fair we have gotten achievements it is just not that important compared to our past. As Philadelphians we have a legacy to follow and I just feel we have not gone out of our way to do something important in a long while, perhaps our golden age is behind us.

Flooding Down the Road - Science Fair Project: Reflection

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Bio-Chem 10 - Sherif - B on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 9:16 am

Inquiry-

I wanted to know the which terrain between sand, dirt, concrete, and clay would be able to absorb the most and the least amount of water.

Research-

I reviewed the roughness of the terrain, and I also found the densities of the materials to have most of the factors taken into account.

Collaboration-

I worked with the many people, my science teacher Mr. Sherif, an intern from Drexel Ms. Kelly Brandt, and my father Dell Meriwether. I also practiced by presenting to other students in SLA, they gave me the feedback I needed to grow and explain my project much better.

Presentation-

They way I presented left an early understanding about how this project can be used to help the environment.

Reflection-

I feel that the modifications necessary for this project are both a need for more realistic situation for this project. I feel that the materials I used a very small amount of the amount of the items that might have worked in the real world, If I could I would try using many more materials and testing different outcomes.

History Portfolio

Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 11.29.42 PM
Screen Shot 2014-06-10 at 11.29.42 PM

When I first heard of the subject of World History I was curious since in most of my other history classes they had gone over one central area in the world. At the time I had believed the world was too big to do a simple study all over all the world at once. I was proven wrong when our teacher Mr.Block showed us the connections between the different parts of the world and the unity of the areas. Eventually the leason moved beyond just telling us simple relations to understanding mindset and psychology of the people of the time. This had left a large impression on me to know that these mindsets at the time were normal.

Over the course of the year we looked over many real world issues from both the past and the present. One of these moment I found as a crucial example of psychology be a main factor in our progression was the French Revolution. During this time France was going through a very heavy debt and the people living there at the time had different views about who was to blame and what was happening. To the Rich and high class the money problems did not seem like an issue, so they simply taxed the poor. Through the eyes of the poor the rich were just trying to sustain their wealth and they should use their own money to pay. This leads to a revolution and causes much bloodshed among the people of the town. THough is is immediate that in today’s world we look at the richer leaders as the bad people, perhaps it is not their complete fault. Perhaps those who were richer we not aware of the problems going on in the poorer areas since the two sides were so separate.

Another moment of mindset is in one of my journals I had written about what gender was to me. I believed that gender is just chemicals and that their are no other differences. Though in todays world this is normal I now understand that it was widely accepted to believe that there were serious disadvantages to being a woman. This is just a matter of what you know the people of the past only loose sources and generalisation to learn from, now we have science to understand what we could not before.

Another example of the time’s mindset is the idea of religion superseding science, today many people believe in religion and science coexisting. Once people believed in the idea that religion was the head of everything and certain sciences were only secondary compared to the faith they had in their Gods. The Aztecs were told a prophecy of their Gods coming to them and coincidentally Cortes and his men came and killed them. This also happened when Galileo came tried to teach the people of his religiously trusting community of his scientific discoveries. Today we do not hold the same reliance as many of the people did in the past, we do not worry or need to pray as much as our ancestors once did. This is an impact of circumstance and the progression of our society, it is a sign that we have moved forward into new ideas.

People are much more than the character they can be seen in books they are people who have reasons for everything that they do or did. We learned this in my history class and I understand now that people that were once portrayed as good or bad were all had a psych, what they did with it was human choice.

Revolution Guidebook Project (Jordan Meriwether)

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in World History - Block - C on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 7:54 pm

In our we learn much about the different protest happening now and in the past. A were able to see the progression of a revolution happen right in front of us due to there being a revolt in Ukraine, this gave us a very vivid image of how a these things are dealt with today. We also looked through a book called ‘198 Methods of Nonviolent Action’ which discusses different forms of protest very specifically.

Throughout my project I studied the changes throughout history of the treatment of the protestors and if they were treated any better throughout history. I mainly look at the Revolutionary war and the civil rights movement since they represent very different views of how protests should be handled. Once I had compared them all to this time I noticed extreme changes  in violence towards protesters as time became more recent. Now I understand the issues and risk of a protest in those separate times.

Element Project

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 9:16 pm
Inquiry- I was assigned the element arsenic for this art project and was told to discover the different properties of it.I looked on the internet and found different interesting facts about my element.

Research- I looked throughout the internet and found that the element I was chosen to study was a dangerous chemical that none the less was used in rat poison and cigarette.

Collaboration- I had different people at my biochemistry group help me look over my work. I had most help from my table partner Tomi.

Presentation- In the end I chose different colors that represented either danger, poison, or the colors arsenic was.

Reflection- In the end I found that this project took a lot of accuracy and time. The amount of focus you need will shift throughout the project for study to crafting.

Negative Space

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 12:57 am
  A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative space is simply coloring but instead of inside the drawing it is out side This gives a strange blank effect, where you have to make out the picture bast on the outline.

    B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?

In my orange and brown cut out I had to make a make half a picture in to the whole thing so I traced the picture and cut it out. I then separated every other piece, After placing them on the paper I have to arrange the sides to be mirrors of each other. The still life images were mainly backwards coloring books as explained above, coloring outside the lines.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
Negative space help artists understand which parts stand out and which do not.

    D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

If you are doing molds then it helps distinguish the differences perspective, but in a different style it would be useless.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Art - Freshman - Hull on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 9:28 pm
I learned that you need to erase to make your project look better. If you do not erase then you will be stuck with bad perspective, I also learned that you may not notice bad perspective until the end.

This project taught me the values of perspective art, and how a  picture can look weird if it is done incorrectly. It also taught me the values of the  orthogonal, and how without it perspective would be lost.

If I were to redo this project I would most likely have started by planning, instead of rushing in to the main picture. By planning I would have been more prepared in what the end project would look like, instead of just going with the flow.

My advice:

  • When you find the orthogonal start to plan where thing will go.

  • Go to the spot with the best view of the area.

  • Stay focused

My greatest help was my fathers are tools and his grandfather's set to they helped me get the right angle every time. (no pun intended)

Reaction Jordan Meriwether

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Geometry - Thompson on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 12:04 pm

This relates to the real world through how architect work when building a building. They do the exact thing we did except the opposite direction. They first have a drawing of the build and how they want to scale it, then they build the building. They make it to the scale the predicted. Also if someone wants to add a new window to  wall then they have to find the area of a wall and the window and subtract them to find  how much space it takes up. My  grand father once worked in this type of business which is how I know about it so well.

It was exciting to leave the classroom for math, and also do this in a real situation. At my old school we never left the school for anything It  was like a prison for us. So I was shocked that we actually could leave the school and work. Also I am not used to going on to google maps, let alone suggest things to them. Normally I never even use maps because I know where to go in philly so that was something new to try. This has been an interesting and new type of experience to me.

What I learned from completing this project is how to measure building with just a mirror and a  measuring stick. I was also surprised at how simple it was just to do it. This will be a skill I can use maybe in a future career. I also learned how to work with people who may not be as productive as myself, that will be a special skill for future projects. I also learned that even if you are wrong you can fix your mistakes to make everything workout.

Media Part 2

My slide change greatly throughout the weeks, after the criticism I received I strongly considered what I could change. I fixed my alpha picture fist by replacing it with a unalhaed picture, and masked the parts of my photo that were not useful, like background people. Next, I fixed the alignment of the entire slide by moving it to the middle of the page, this way I was able to have a flow. I also changed the position of my name from the bottom to the top of the page since it is the most important. Then, I changed the colores of the words to match the colors in the picture so it seems like it fits together.

Jordan Awesome Blog Post

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 5:54 pm

In technology class we discussed how to make efficient slides on PowerPoint that do not have much on them, but say a lot. The idea for this script is for me to be able to be able to explain a slide that is about myself without getting choked up.

This slide (believe it or not) was inspired by a IKEA sign, since like most they make a point by saying little to nothing. My slide can be considered “glance media”, since in only one quick glance you would get all the information you need to understand it (I am a fencer and I am the best you will ever know). “Bleeding” is when you take a photo and cut part of it out of the frame, this would not work for this in my opinion since you need to see the full picture to know I am fencing. You may also have noticed that the first thing you looked at was was ‘You Will Ever Know’ on my slide since it makes you have to look back and read the rest.

The picture I chose was not random, it is the perfect picture to get the point across about who is the best. The photo was a action shot which causes the viewer to train his eyes on to it, also it bring forth excitement. The slide portrays a bright photo which draws the attention of the readers right after they have read the statement. The only flaw is it holds no emotions, just me fencing, but other than that I is a superb slide.

The internet starts out in a cloud (not a real cloud) and is bought to different homes through multiple service providers. My internet service provider ( or ISP) is Comcast, they connect me to the internet as long as I pay a fee of $55 each month which is $660 in a year. The internet comes into my house through a cable that goes in the my computer. My internet is also connected to my

For our project we will be teaching greetings, and will also be teaching the time. Specifically we will teach how to greet (like saying hello), how to ask how are you, and how to say goodbye through basic conversation at different times of the day.

Hola-hi
Buenos Días- Good morning
Buenos tardes- Good afternoon
Buenos noches- Good night
¿Qué tal?- How are you?
¿Cómo Va?- How are you?
¿Cómo estas (tú) informal- How are you?
¿Cómo esta (ud.) formal- How are you?
(Muy) bien, gracias- (very) well thanks
Más o mens- Alright

For our video we will show two people from a spanish speaking country greeting each other in a natural fashion.

We also will go over how to say the phrases about time, mainly asking and telling what time it is. We will review how to say different times and how to say numbers.
