Insanity Defense

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Science And Society - Best - Y on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 6:38 pm

Throughout the process of conviction and court cases, there comes a variety of different standards that are put into place, in order to make sure criminals are put to justice in ways that make sense. This is the most common of scenarios. However, this can change, if those convicted are believed to be mentally incapable of standing trial, which can be plead if one doesn’t believe they are either innocent or guilty. Individuals may make this plea themselves, or, in the case that the judge or the jury believes that the convicted falls along that criteria. This defense, while almost rarely used today, is critical, in order to provide fair and equal treatment for anyone who happens to find themselves in a court of law.

There are many different opinions regarding this defense. Proponents of the argument believe that, with enough evidence, allows those who severely need help are able to be provided with that help, specific to the extent of psychological or psychiatric impairment, and while this is entirely true, it isn’t always the case, as opponents tend to believe this defense is a means to allow criminals to be released on charges that range from shoplifting to full blown manslaughter. The morale is often challenged, considering the fact that there are often times exceptions to this defense that work against whoever happens to be using it. The term ‘insanity’ itself is a very broad term, legally, because there are vast differences from each psychiatric disorder, both in how it affects patients, and what comes out of these afflictions.

A modern case study comes from that of James Holmes, who opened fire into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado back in 2012. While the motives for this case are to this day still unknown, evidence found gives a bit of insight on what might have gone on in Holmes’ mind before the shooter, as journal entries written by Holmes himself showcases pretty disturbing content. Without getting down into the nitty gritty details, Holmes appears to be very apathetic about the way society and the world looks. The theme of death and humanity appear quite often in his writings, which  could lead one to believe that yes, maybe there was a touch of depression, however, often times during such a state, one is still mentally in control of their behaviors, without regard to more serious cases, typically ones ending in depression induced psychosis. While psychiatric evaluations were complete, in order to gauge Holmes mentality, the further notes he had taken down describe how the shooting was to take place, even going as far as to describe the ETA of police officers, depending on his location. It’s disturbing to think someone would put so much effort into planning the deaths of innocent civilians, which typically is the case in mass shootings. The insanity defense is very tricky in that there are many factors that can and cannot dictate how we view someone as, quote, ‘insane.’ While one can be mentally incapable to stand trial, Holmes eye for detail really shows that he knew what he was doing, down to the last second, and knew how he was going to carry everything out, something one typically doesn’t have should they meet the requirements of this defense.

Scientifically, this defense helps allow for psychiatric advances for criminal behaviors. What causes them? Is there any correlation between a certain ailment, and a certain crime? Are we really meant to judge the criminally insane, when they’re not completely ‘there,’ in a sense? The human brain is extremely fascinating as it is complex. While it has already been proven that there are in fact specifics in the brain that often times make for these criminal behaviors, being able to classify each sickness to its victim, and finding appropriate treatment or punishment is key, in order to keep things in the legal system with some level of morality. As a societal whole, giving those who wouldn’t necessarily have the chance to obtain such a substantial amount of treatment for behaviors that harshly inflict everyday living is key. The US legal system has many advantages as it does flaws, especially in the gray areas revolving around psychiatric disorders and how the affect criminals. Having the knowledge to determine what makes sense to do in what situation is an advancement, as too many people are getting off with charges lesser than their actual crime, for reasons that make absolutely no sense. Yes, it’s imperative that every potential inmate have a fair trial, the outcomes are sometimes less than beneficial.

After a long, grueling four years, you tend to have a lot to say, and no platform to share those thoughts with, and while blogs are totally socially acceptable, having created maybe eight or nine of them, it loses it's effectiveness. The product of nearly a year and a half of work, comes This Book Got Me 302'd, my own take at trying to process the last few years of my life. Part memoir, part completely drawn out, teary rant, this book is an extension of myself, in the written world. I tried to create something that best utilizes my skills, while still having the ability to mean something more than a couple hundred pages thrown together. It's not everyday you get the chance to actually sit down and write for a purpose. This is probably one of my greatest pieces coming out of SLA, something I'm extremely proud of, and something that hopefully leaves something meaningful behind to anyone who happens to read it.

Q3 Artist's Statement

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Senior Art - Hull - D on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 8:56 am

Art is a constantly changing thing, especially when it comes to personal styles. Branching out and experimenting with brand new styles, while still incorporating familiar techniques makes for a variety of interesting pieces. Stepping out of your comfort zone and expanding what you already know about art allows one to not only improve as an artist, but ultimately figure out methods you never knew you liked, or were even good at, both in style and technique.

Dog Ownership

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Science And Society - Best - Y on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 11:21 am

Aside from the benefits of having a lifelong companion, having a dog holds a lot of unexpected perks as well. To start off, a common issue with owning a pet happens to be allergies that are triggered through dander and fur, and while this is true for a lot of families, those who happen to have smaller children with a dog actually have a greater chance of not having these allergies. This is because of the exposure to these allergens from an earlier age allows the body to adapt to having them within it’s system. The child is young enough to have a buildup within their immune system, which cancels out the negative effect that an allergen can have when first entering the body, as they become quite literally immune to it. This isn’t the case for every animal, however, as cats actually have the adverse effect.

Dogs are also known for provoking happiness in many people. Petting, playing, or even simply looking at a dog triggers the brain to release a chemical called oxytocin, which inhibits an elevated mood. These levels are increased, causing a happier outlook. The same can be said for walking a dog in order to combat stress. The act of physically moving releases endorphins, a natural pain-killer which assist sleep and in turn helps sleep and lowers one’s stress. Aside from the physical aspects of it, playing with an animal is typically an enjoyable experience, which in turn generally proves to be something worthwhile in doing.

Another fun fact about owning a dog comes in the form of the immune system. As dogs are made up completely differently than humans, their bodies are made up of different bacteria types, which can vary from the bacteria found within the human body. Now, while this may sound like a bad thing, these bacteria can be passed through to their owner. This allows the immune system to create a variety of different antibodies, usually increasing the amount in the system overall, which is a good sign, as an increase in this mechanism allows one to get sick much less. Studies have shown that dog owners are less likely to get sick than their petless counterparts.

Placing this into the real world, dogs have a pretty high standing. Because of their stress reducing qualities, symptoms of depression and anxiety can be lowered for individuals  suffering from those disorders. Even suffers of depression or those with suicidal thoughts have a reason to stay alive and get active on days that appear to be too much to handle. Walking dogs can improve heart health, and can lower the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure, which lowers the chances of future heart attacks. Emotional support dogs and seeing eye dogs are beneficial to those with vision problems, or those who have emotional disabilities, and can prove to be quite useful in these situations. Dogs can also be social object, as different breeds can often be used as a conversation starter, allowing those who wouldn’t normally socialize to have the chance to do so. Did I mention how adorable dogs are in general?

This relates back to myself in a lot of different ways. While I’m not a dog owner myself, I do have a guinea pig, which could technically be considered the same thing. Having a dog would greatly improve my emotional and social life, as well as allow me to be more physically active, as playing with a dog isn’t a super intense workout, but provides just the right amount of physical activity. The dogs I know are already extremely friendly and really entertaining. All of this, plus every other benefit really makes getting a dog a great addition to future plans! Not only are they extremely cute and cuddly, but they provide a lifetime of really awesome benefits!

McCarthy Unabridged 'The Road,' Page 151

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Being Human - Giknis - C on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 5:59 pm
This is my interpretation of what might've been cut from Cormac McCarthy's The Road before the final edition of the novel was printed.
~~~
He reached over to make sure the boy was still breathing, as he could only find reassurance in the gentle rise and fall of his chest. He counted each, as if it were the last thing he could do. His own were far too staggered, too protean, as the last phrase he uttered rang out in his mind.
What else could he possibly manage to lose? What else was worth losing in this world?
He had a purpose. To protect the only thing that held purpose to him. His own flesh and blood. But in the end, would it matter?
In that moment it happened, thoughts colliding too quickly, much like the rise and fall of his own breathing. He couldn’t keep doing this on his own. He was only one man. And he’d lost everything. She was gone. He was drifting away from the boy. His mind was losing him. And he couldn't take it anymore.
He couldn’t always keep looking over his shoulder. He couldn’t keep him safe, because he himself, wasn’t safe. There were dangers around every corner, but the biggest threat was his mind.  Maybe he should’ve taken his life right then and there. Let his son carry the fire. Things were too much and he was tired. He couldn’t always be the one looking out for everyone.
Looking down at the boy sleeping beside him, he felt himself tense.
I'm sorry I cant do more.  I know I'm not the best but I'm trying.
~~~

Below is the rationale to explain the choices I made for this project.

The Man is a very complex character. We don’t get to see how he’s thinking and feeling, considering the fact that he’s always focused on survival, and the safety of his son. There’s no time for him to think, because, in reality, there’s only one driving force in this world, being survival, and moving on, even if it seems impossible.

The connection to the plot comes in the form of foreshadowing. The man knows that without his help, he and his son will eventually die. The growing problem for him is being unable to predict what might happen next, because of how impossible it is to come to the next point. He’s scared, and he has no way of showing that, because he has to be the adult. The cycle continues, and the Man’s caught up between keeping himself and his son safe, while at the same time, trying to keep his sanity.

This follows through with the theme of survival. What sets apart the line between living and surviving? Should one’s mentality be a correct guideline? The easy answer depends on the person, but in this case, the Man’s physical survival literally meant the difference between life and death, which is why, in moments such as the one written, are hidden from the Boy. He can’t know that the world is finally breaking his father down. His father has to be strong and power, just as he sees it, regardless of the price it has.

Interestingly enough, the Man’s thoughts are constantly contained, and even the smaller bits we hear from his perspective, are very one-dimensional. His experiences have shown a very darker past than what meets the eye, and as he internalizes it, it makes the reader question what his actual motives are in this world, aside from the overall goal of making it out alive. The Man’s life is already challenging, we see this throughout the novel and through the choices he has to make, however, does he ever stop and try reflecting on what he’s done to bring him to certain points in his life? The Man is very complex, even at his highest points. That, however, doesn’t make him completely indestructible.

Confidence is key. You may start out completely hating what you do. You might rip it up, throw it away, and try to start over again. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad artist, or your work isn’t the absolute best it can be. You have to keep trying. It won’t always come out perfect in the end, but it’s how you see it is completely different than how it may perceived in the outside world. I had a lot of trouble this time around, because I constantly kept doubting what I could do. In the end, creating art shouldn't be about how much skill you have. It should be fun. You shouldn't stress so much about how amazing it turns out, because overall, being able to create something that others could enjoy is actually pretty epic.

There’s something satisfying finally tackling a bigger challenge within your artwork. Maybe you had to do it once, maybe a thousand times until it finally matched your vision. And it's a lovely feeling knowing that all that work turned into something beautiful, even if it doesn’t always feel that way at first.

Sometimes, things aren’t going to go exactly as you planned, which is completely alright. You always have to have something else to fall back on. Even if what you create doesn’t match what you wanted to to from the beginning, that’s okay. Learning to love what you make is key, even if it isn’t what you expected. That’s what makes things unique, by exceeding expectations in a completely new way.

Never self doubt yourself. Sometimes the best things are created by accident.

This is Why You can't Have Nice Things

This is Why You can’t Have Nice Things

Comparing relationship expectations between ‘Taming of the Shrew,’ and ‘Not Cool.’

The idea of a solid guideline within relationships has been around for quite sometime, justified by Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew.’ Petruchio, an eccentric, exceptionally motivated suitor, seeks to win the affection, (or not,) of Katherine, regardless of what she wants. While this is far from the case today, in the 2014 release, Not Cool, the roles are almost completely switched. the main character, Tori, decides that she can ‘fix,’ her old classmate, Scott,  that made high school a hellish experience for her, only to learn that she has feelings for him.

At a glance, Petruchio and Tori almost have very different motives. Petruchio uses much harsher methods, including starving his own fiancee, in order to have her submit to him. while  Tori, unwilling to forgo the cold demeanor she’d built up for so long, uses more subtle methods  disguised as simple gestures of friendship in order to get what she wants. Despite this, her efforts almost always result in the same thing, her attempt to deny any kind of feeling toward Scott, before because of his lack of change, when in reality, it’s because of her refusal of letting someone else hurt her again. This portrays the constant fear that past relationships will often haunt someone, which forces one to become  against love, perceiving the notion that one is ultimately unlovable, even when it is far from the case.

Be patient, gentlemen. I choose her for myself.

If she and I be pleased, what’s that to you?

'Tis bargained ’twixt us twain, being alone,

That she shall still be curst in company.

I tell you, ’tis incredible to believe

How much she loves me. O, the kindest Kate!

She hung about my neck, and kiss on kiss

She vied so fast, protesting oath on oath,

That in a twink she won me to her love.

O, you are novices! 'Tis a world to see,

How tame, when men and women are alone,

A meacock wretch can make the curstest shrew.

(Act II, Scene I, Line 1153 Petruchio)

Petruchio describes the fact that regardless of how Katherine thinks, he will some how manage to ‘tame,’ her, by ensuring she does exactly what he says, has a certain attitude, and ultimately becomes his own pawn. He implies that marrying her, or otherwise keeping her completely under his control will help shape her into another person, giving the audience the idea that she is essentially unable to find someone else that would love her, without proper guidance.

Tori’s take on this approach is almost entirely different, with varying results as she goes.

After confronting Scott one night at a party, and having an encounter while Black Friday shopping, Tori decides to see if she can challenge the previous connotations of Scott’s attitude, and essentially have him gradually change his ways. Hence the introduction of the bucket list with a twist. The list contains different activities that generally hold major consequences, however the entire point, as speculated by Scott, is to loosen up.  It is later revealed, however,  that Tori’s initial intent from the start was to change Scott, in order to be exactly like she was. This gives insight on Tori’s past, which to an extent was ostracized by the fact that most had negative outlooks on her, which caused her to look down at the rest of the world, specifically Scott. These ideas, despite being so small, are a much bigger problem, because they give Tori justification that she is, in fact, vulnerable, and to an extent, unlovable.   This carries out through the movie, and through realizations and actions of her own doing, her mentality is challenged, showing her overall that she in fact, had nothing to hold a tough front over.

Why came I hither but to that intent?

Think you a little din can daunt mine ears?

Have I not in my time heard lions roar?

Have I not heard the sea puff'd up with winds

Rage like an angry boar chafed with sweat?

Have I not heard great ordnance in the field,

And heaven's artillery thunder in the skies?

Have I not in a pitched battle heard

Loud 'larums, neighing steeds, and trumpets' clang?

And do you tell me of a woman's tongue,

That gives not half so great a blow to hear

As will a chestnut in a farmer's fire?

Tush, tush! fear boys with bugs.

(Petruchio Act I, Scene II Line 16)

Petruchio, in one of his many speeches, declares in part, that if a man cannot control his wife, he is more often than not, effeminate, and therefore loses a strong sense of masculinity because of it. The problem with this kind of thinking, is the fact that it leads to a much more destructive mindset when it comes to relationships. These ideas can branch off from extreme moments of insecurity, specifically when feeling as if the opposing gender is better to some degree. By holding what Petruchio considers, ‘masculinity,’ by controlling his soon to be wife, Katherine, he gives himself some form of gratitude that he is far superior to her, because of his gender.

In the movie, this exact mindset is shared by a secondary main character, Joel, who believes that his gender alone sets him apart from the rest, as he attempts to chase after Janie, Scott’s younger sister.

Throughout the movie, Joel has an arrogant attitude toward both himself, and women in general. He feels as though, much like Petruchio, gender alone is a means of strength. This alone gives him a false sense of entitlement, which fuels his attraction toward Janie, motivating him to go to the extremes in order to impress her. While he does, in the end realize his mistakes, the vast majority of the movie is Joel taking pretty immense risks in order to captivate a girl that barely has any connection toward him, for his own selfish justifications. His attitude in general comes off as an entire facade, generated from a semi narcissistic personality, in order to hide major insecurities.

Women have definitely  taken a much higher stand when it comes toward relationships. They aren't generally going to change themselves for someone else, nor are they going to follow closely in the footsteps of Katherine. In a way, women have almost taken to the role of Petruchio.The main character holds the same attitude as Katherine does. She's blunt completely out there, and at first glance, extremely cold. The problem is though, her motives are very different from that of Katherine's which makes this comparison completely useless.

Unlike Katherine, Tori isn't the one being tamed, she is, however the one attempting to do the taming. She, unlike Katherine, stays true to what she really is, while attempting to change and mold the male main character into her own image. The same goes for Joel, in the sense that manipulating himself, in order to hide a false sense of accomplishment, ‘tames,’ Janie, in order to justify the fact that he is worth something and can be loved.

There are many different forms of art. The best part about creating it, is being able to make something completely new from things you know and that are familiar. Most of my artwork this quarter had been highly inspired from some of my favorite things in pop culture, with my own little twist on them.

You can go far with your own imagination. But sometimes, it doesn’t hurt to have a little help from other places.

You can’t always limit what you can do, because then, you’re not creating. There have been plenty of times where I gave up on something, because I always compared my art to others, and it never worked out in the end. Art is something to be enjoyed, no matter what the medium. And if you’re not being you, what’s the point in making something for people to enjoy?

The secret to art isn’t skill, it’s loving what you do, and taking risks with yourself.

The Changing World Essay

Posted by Heaven Mendez in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 7:00 am

Analytical Essay:

      In the words of Chinese Philosopher, Lao Tzu “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow.”  Life has a multitude of change, which most of the time is almost unavoidable. Something leads to change, then the person affected by the change  is left to process what happened. It is not the easiest thing to do, especially if the change is formidable. The fact of the matter is, Bartle is almost forced into a changing world. Things happen that aren’t always ideal, and the more one thinks about it, man is merely a small piece in an even bigger picture, and no matter how hard one tries, the reaction is never going to be a good one.

Things happen all the time. It’s a fact of life people have come to accept. It’s not always good, but it isn’t always terrible. Kevin Powers explores this in his book, The Yellow Birds, a story set through the duration of the Iraq war. “And you can’t explain it, but, it’s just, like, fuck you, but then you signed up to go so it’s all your fault, really, because you went on purpose so you are in the end, doubly fucked, so why not find a spot and curl up and die and let’s make it as painless as possible because you really are a coward.” Some of the worst things that can happen to someone is dealt by the person themselves. Often times dealing with a sudden change  is carried out with the best intentions in mind, however, as quickly as the world can change, so can everything in it, and the ultimate reaction to all this can be pretty shocking. The world isn’t a nice place, especially if one gets too caught up in all the small things.

Reacting to change can almost be fitted into stages. Someone can either react with some deal of emotion, or with none at all. In this circumstance, its more or less a personal struggle, rather than something against whatever change is occurring. “The closer I got to reconstructing him in my mind, the more the picture I was trying to recreate receded.” This quote, taken from Bartle, describes his process of attempting to recollect his memories after coming home from the war. When things slowly begin breaking down, and Bartle begins attempting to process what  happened, everything else begins distancing from whoever him . This is dangerous in an ever changing world, because when someone finds themselves so caught up in previous events and ideas, they’re almost slipping away from what's actually going on, ignoring whatever change may be happening.

Sometimes after situations such as this, one becomes desensitized with the rest of the world. Forgetting everything else in favor their own feelings. “At one time you could of asked me if I thought the snow meant something. I would’ve said yes. I might have thought there was some significance to the fact that there had been snow on the day that Murph had come into my life and snow on the day I willed myself into the one that had been taken from him.” Once things begin changing, it almost seems like nothing else begins to matter.Bartle’s world changes after the death of his best friend. Small things, things that he never really paid much attention to slowly became a trigger to him. Things he barely looked at became something of detachment.

Kevin Powers associates most of his writing toward generating a genuine recollection of what happens during wartime. That being said, the relationship between both past experiences in real life, and through the war, are almost parallel toward the idea of change. I've always had a certain level of comfort with the dark part of the human experience. It hasn't had an attraction, but it has certainly had a fascination.”

Change often brings a variety of difference into a situation, and these experiences aren’t always so bright. The dark part of human experiences that the author is talking about relates back to how one can react to the change in the rest of the world.

Narrative

In my opinion the real world is terrible, and I’d rather not deal with it at all.   Considering the fact that I’m always one incident away from full blown insanity, I try to change whenever I feel necessary, rather than changing with the rest of the world. Life is too short to try and keep up with small things. You’re either moving whenever things feel right, or you’re caught up in something you’ll end up forgetting later.

And that’s how I figured out I was manic-depressive.

For me,the  only real worldly changes that have to be looked out for are whether or not someone is still going to be there five years from now or how badly an episode is going to affect anyone else. I can’t react to a constantly changing world, because that’s another source of anxiety and bad feelings in and of itself, so I’d rather not worry about something thats going to cause me pain in the end.

Then there are small moments that aren’t the epitome of being completely miserable. Those idealistic pieces of memorabilia aren’t easily found, but once they do, everything changes, and for one day, everything feels alright, and in those moments, you can feel amazing. You can do anything, and nothing can make you feel any less real. That’s called mania.

But hey, who said it’s not okay to feel subsequently human?

I digress, really, depending on how bad the situation, sometimes things are easier to bounce back from, but as a whole, to put it lightly, life has quite literally made me it’s bitch, and there’s nothing I can do about it. The insanity was never my fault, but it didn’t bother me anyway.

Let the rest of the world change, I’m perfectly fine in my own little bubble.

But you wanted to know how it feels like, right? Waking up in the morning realizing you’re the very thing that makes you hate your own reflection, and every ounce of love someone ever had for you is now gone because you’re unstable, and cut up arms are always prettier than soft ones.

Let’s reiterate one last time. I’m finished with the rest of the world. Things can change, but I won’t.

But’s that’s just my illness talking.

And that’s also what happens during the lower parts of the depression, which is almost like the ‘world,’ changing me, if that makes any sense. I react differently to certain things than others do. I say things that other people may find unusual. This is because I had to grow up much faster then most people.

It’s no one’s real fault, because when you’re born, your parents aren’t, (hopefully,) sitting around you saying how much they’d like to see you suffer. But sometimes someone does something stupid. And that stupidity grows into something much larger, and because you’re already impressionable, you’re holding all of that in, until you reach a certain age and look back at your life. Then you realize that something went wrong, and that you’re no longer the only thing you’re supposed to keep safe. Because sometimes, those monsters that your parents told you never existed, suddenly become real. And they’re everywhere, but nobody can make them go away. And the rest of the world sits back and judges you for not being able to let go of things that aren’t real to them.

But you really aren’t crazy. It’s the world’s way of protecting yourself. It keeps you safe, even if you’re doing stupid things. You learn that you’re actually not a good person, and because of that, nobody loves you. And you know what? It’s okay to feel these things. You just can’t hurt yourself over them, or life sucks even more than it used to. You’re actually a half decent person when you’re not threatening to kill yourself every five minutes.

Q1 Art Portfolio- Mendez

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 6:24 pm
Artists Statement

My art is influenced heavily by how I feel, and different pop culture references. I combine the styles, creating my own, unique art pieces, mostly sketches. I see art as something people should enjoy, without any strict rules, which is why I consider my art a bit laid back, mostly in the manga style, which is where a lot of my drawings have been inspired by.

The other half comes from what happens when you take pure insanity, and try putting it on paper.

Heaven Mendez 2fer Revision

People have a variety of ways to handle a difficult situation. In most cases, people rely on a traditional support network, like religion, family, or friends. However, the circumstances may call for help from another, not generally thought of source. In these cases, people generally feel alone, and afraid to come to peace with themselves. Teenagers especially, have found a new way to cope with difficult and stressful periods in their lives. Through song lyrics, concerts, and social media, modern day musicians can ultimately save people’s lives.

The biggest connection that someone going through a difficult situation can make is through another person, who has faced similar circumstances, and has had a successful outcome. In this case, song lyrics can be the large piece in finding a connection, even though the singer or band is not physically present to comfort them.  Some bands even create their music with a struggling audience in mind. Post-metal core band, Pierce the Veil, shows this, during an interview about their song, ‘Bulls in the Bronx.’ When asked why the song was written, frontman Vic Fuentes, responded, “Many of our fans reach out to us and let us know the effect our music has had on their lives. We never take this lightly, and it’s important to us to make music that hopefully in some way helps people get through darker times.”  They aren’t looking at them as just another fan. They generally care about the music they write, and want something good to be taken away from it. Whether it be giving someone hope after a suicide attempt, or providing a method of distraction to prevent an act of self harm. These musicians can sometimes be someone’s only support. Another song, from the very same band, ‘A Match into Water,’ displays this within the first few lines of the first verse. ‘ I kissed the scars on her skin, I still think you’re beautiful, and I don’t ever wanna lose my best friend. I screamed out God you vulture, Bring her back or take me with her.” While it isn’t extremely apparent until the chorus, the song implies a suicide, as well as self harm attempts, and the feelings that come afterward. Having someone pour their emotions out into a song is one thing, but having it actually relatable is a completely different

As humans, feeling a sort of comfort within ones own skin is something most wish to acquire, but isn’t a task easily done. Sometimes, it’s more about how someone feels about themselves, rather than what they think about others around them. The popular social media outlet, Tumblr, is especially known for this, considering both musicians and their fans use this to spread the message that they’re never alone . That being said, some of the most influenced, through music, share their stories. A fan posted on a blog dedicated to follower’s favorite music genres “I became a Black Veil Brides Army soldier on January 20th 2012 and ever since then, slowly but surely I’m getting over my self consciousness. They taught me its ok to be weird and abnormal as long as you just be you.,. Certain people within the music industry can really help people figure out who they are, in a personal sense. Specifically with the band, Black Veil Brides, one of the biggest things that set them apart from others in the same genre, is their appearance. Whether it comes to the typical heavy eyeliner, to full on face-makeup and black lipstick, the band believes that no matter what, no one should ever feel ashamed of who they are. “I had a goal, I had a dream…and at the end of the day no matter what people say to you as long as YOU know who you are as a person NOTHING in else in the world matters,” lead singer, Andy Black said in an interview. The band’s message is simple. No matter what, no one knows who you are, but yourself, and no one can take that away from you.

The support isn’t limited to just songs,  or the lyrics. Sometimes, it can simply be something said to an audience, that makes them want to move forward. Like most bands in the metalcore, punk, and pop punk genre, the support that band members give to their fans is immense. Specifically, in this case, Austin Carlile, from metalcore band, Of Mice & Men. “Be your own person because no one can ever take that away from you, no one,’ is the message he spreads to his fans. This follows suit with the last context. People working in this industry don’t care about how many people buy their albums. They want to make a difference in peoples lives. Helping others through their music, and their words, and even their own lives. Giving themselves a greater sense of fulfillment more than anything else.

Band members can also show support through bigger causes. To Write Love on Her Arms, a non profit organization based upon helping individuals who struggle with self harm , has a wide variety of bands that promote the cause through music. Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore, uses this influence in her song, Oh Star. “And I won't let you fall away, From me, You will never fade And I won't let you fall away, From me.” This quote signifies that regardless of the situation, the circumstances, or how bad things may be going for someone, she, as a person will always be there for them. Having gone through issues herself, Hayley’s songs bring a sense of security for fans who struggle with coming to a stable emotional state.

Whether it’s meeting fans in person, interacting on social media, or putting out songs to help a certain situation, music, and the artists behind it have a strong impact on those who listen. Through seemingly small actions, bands members can ultimately save fans lives.

Reflection

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Bio-Chem 10 - Sherif - B on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 8:57 am
Throughout the year, there have been a majority of projects. However, one in particular really stood out to me. In the beginning of the year, I started focusing a lot more on mental health and behavioral sciences. In my opinion, this specific project, is something that I'm really proud of.

Inquiry: The overall process required some thought. I decided that exploring the roots of depression and panic disorders, both of which I have had plenty of experience with, and create a meaningful analysis.

Research: This took a little more time then I originally thought. The further I started looking at different articles, or descriptions of the disorders themselves, the more I found out about them, giving me a deeper understanding of just how the mind is affected, and what steps are taken in order to keep those suffering at ease.

Collaboration: I collaborated closely with my bio-chem teacher, through frequent editing, and reviewing the material. Eventually, the final project itself wouldn't be where it is without his feedback.

Presentation: This project was shared only with my teacher, considering it was more of an independent study. While writing the paper, I had already gone through a bit of a harder time  emotionally, which made it harder to present to an actual audience.

Reflection: One thing I would definitely change, is the overall presentation of my findings. The tone of the paper seems as though it was more research based, but it was a combination of both first hand experience, and medical terminology. I still think it could've been a stronger paper, especially if I had a wider audiance. Either way, this shows that even when in a bad mindset, my work can still be strong.

Final Porfolio

Posted by Heaven Mendez in World History - Block - C on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 9:38 pm

When you start a new course, specifically something that has to do with history, you don’t really expect to get much out of it, besides a pile of facts that are most likely going to be forgotten toward the end of the year. You don’t really expect to walk away with something meaningful. Then again, looking at something from one perspective has never really led to any kind of positive influence.

 There is so much that can be said, so much insight that can be provided. Sometimes, speaking up is the difference between complete success and absolute failure. No opinion is wrong, but staying quiet can be the wrong option

Those who are taking the backend of the abuse, be it economics, for example, and are able to truthfully speak out about an issue are considered greedy, unappreciative, and asking for too much.” Journal #40 (Full journal here)

Asanextreme introvert, I have a ton of thoughts that I keep to myself, most of which, when concerning different problems can go from a broad spectrum to completely subtle to totally blatant, and really blunt. Before taking this course, I didn’t keep a keen eye on things that really mattered, on a global spectrum. When I did know something, I didn’t know enough to form any kind of opinion. As the year went on, that mindset completely changed. While in a conversation, I still struggle to let my ideas be known, in writing, I can be extremely opinionated, and sound somewhat like I know what I’m talking about. I wouldn’t have really developed that skill, if I didn’t have the class. I wouldn’t have been able to look at things from a different, less biased way, This course specifically, has shown the positive effects of expressing an opinion without fear of judgement.

“We, as an entire nation,are greedy, judgmental, and arrogant. Judging from the treatment of almost every, ‘new,’ ethnicity besides white, America is nothing close to what it was originally supposed to be.” - Vine Deloria: Custer Died for Your Sins.  Full page here

As the year went on, we had a different array of things to look at, most of which challenged thinking, and even stepping out of our comfort zones, and switching our ways of thinking altogether.  From the thoughts of someone extremely sensitive to almost every possible thing, this was really a strong part of the course overall. It wasn’t just sitting and learning. It can literally be described as experiencing different pieces of history, with a hands-on attempt. When you have both the power and the space to have an opinion spoken about, while being both supported and not-judged, is a pretty unique aspect of a class in total. This specific quote, while seeming a bit too blunt, shows that throughout the year, I became a bit of a risk taker with my words, something this World History course has shown a lot of.

“The poor girl. She has so much to lose if they actually think something’s wrong. There isn’t anything wrong. She has an overactive imagination. Yes, that’s what it’s called. There’s nothing serious about this. We just need to find a cure. Something to keep it at bay, until we can figure out what to do with Victoria. Ah, Miss Victoria. Such a wretched fool she is. It doesn’t matter that she’s the life and death of my job, she needs to step up and become an actual mother to her child, if that is her child, that is. The icy demeanor between the two of them is simply outrageous We need to figure out something, anything. to fix this family.- We’re All Mad Here

This course had an exponential amount of writing, something I found to be completely within my interest. Toward the middle of the year, we began creating our own plays, pushing ourselves to an idea of a problem within the world around us. Because of my extremely close history with mental illness, my play, written from the perspective of a schizophrenic’s family, displays the unjust, and sometimes cruel world of behavioral health, and the dangerous path that little support can lead to. While the play itself has its flaws, it makes a prominent point toward society’s views on it, specifically during a time when it wasn’t as common as it is today. Using ideas from my own life, with historical prevalence, the piece was created, almost to show that in a completely imperfect world, certain things will continue to stay the way they are.

“There is nothing diverse if your race is shunned, and you must act a certain way, or face the consequences.” Vine Deloria: Custer Died for Your Sins.

The most memorable part of this course in total, has to be the recording of our initial reaction to various topics, sometimes even coming directly from documents found in history itself. I can only speak for myself when I say that history has always appeared to be something that you go over, and continuously is forgotten. This time around, I was actually engaged. I was able to look at the world in an entirely new perspective, and that, in itself, makes all the difference.

Artist Reflection

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Art - Freshman - Hull on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 8:18 pm
Originally, I was supposed to do the project involving negative space, using elements as the topic. The process of the entire thing was pretty good. It mainly involved constant sketching, getting feedback from Ms. Hull, and returning to my sketchbook in order to revise whatever seemed to be out of place in the drawing. This went on for a while. Once it was brought to my attention exactly how the sketches would be used, I panicked, practically dreading art class from that moment on.

We were all warned that linoleum cutters were these sharp, almost dangerous if used incorrectly tools. Now, had this been before, I would've jumped at the chance at attempting to use something with such risk added onto it. However, as soon as the warning stretched onto the fact that if you were to accidentally lose control of the blade, and it happened to puncture the skin, the results seemed fatal. Avoiding giving off some entire life story over a blog post, I considered the tool to be a personal danger. After an email session with Hull, followed by a pretty long conversation, I was in the clear to do something less, sharp, if you will, and was allowed to do a few simple sketches. I decided to draw a few pictures in the style of manga. In a way, they actually correlate to the essential questions and core values.

Inquiry:
Before being able to do this mini-project, a few questions had to be asked. 'Why do you feel as though you aren't able to complete the element project?' 'What would be most helpful to you, as a student?' And, 'What would make you feel more comfortable,' were just a few pieces to this value.

Research:
I poured a lot of research into this, beforehand. Learning how to draw different hairstyles, eyes, expressions, and facial features were some of the basics, before I moved into a few more advanced topics, such as keeping everything aligned, and giving the characters a more animated look.

Collaboration:
Throughout the project, I collaborated with both my teachers, and my peers. The various critiques I'd ask from people probably had to be my biggest source of this value.

Presentation:
Each drawing has been, 'presented,' to someone at least once. By posting them online, one could also consider that a form of presentation.

Reflection:
This very blog post! Thinking of what exactly were my highest and weakest points within the project also helped greatly within the creation of the reflection.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 8:55 pm
This project, like many other I've encountered at SLA, has been both extremely challenging, as well as pretty fulfilling. During this entire process, I've learned a lot about both first point perspective, and the concept of messing up, and starting all over again. After completely rushing through the project, I ultimately faced major consequences, that being having to start all over. From this though, I found the error of my ways. Before getting some extremely helpful advice from Ms. Hull, I'd just thrown in whatever I could, in order to get the project done faster. However, this completely backfired. Anyway, after much trial and error, I finally managed to complete the project, with a product much better than the original. I guess something in particular I really learned was to keep going, even if things aren't really in your favor.

Learning this drawing helped my artistic skill more, by enriching me, and adding some variety to it. Before my art classes at SLA, I was stuck to drawing basic cartoons, and some manga characters, which isn't really impressive. I'd always wanted to learn how to draw things like full rooms, and not a sad excuse for one. While I'm still attempting to grasp the skill, I love the idea of improving well enough to have really impressive room drawings. This class has taught me something I'd never learn otherwise!

If I could do this project all over again, (which I technically did...,) i would pay a little more attention to the requirements at hand, then started the actual drawing, rather than getting what I could, not asking for help, then freaking out when given another chance. I'd also reconsider the color scheme. And definitely avoid markers, they only lead to trouble...

To those ever interested in pursing the art of one point perspective drawings, should look into the following, before achieving those dreams. I highly, highly, highly, one hundred percent recommend both getting a good look at your subject, making sure you fully know what you want to have in your picture. Also, take your time, don't rush, have several pencils and erasers nearby, because there is no such thing as being over prepared. Lastly, when a teacher says draw from the vanishing point, you'd be better off to listen to that...

My greatest resource had to be my peers. I'd be distraught, and in a complete frenzy, but they'd always be around to help me out, and offer some pointers here and there. However, my biggest one right now, has to be Ms. Hull. I really can't get over the fact that I was allowed to restart, even though my first outcome was awful. That right there, is called awesome art teaching.

Below are my drawings. You can already see the immense difference between the last one. (first image,) and my first attempt, (second image.)

A veces, nosotros leemos bien interesante libros.

¿Qué bueno, no? No me gusta nada la clase de Matemáticas, porque es muy difícil, pero, mi professors ayuda me mucho. ¡SLA es serio, bobo, y súper fantástico! SLA es una escuela para los trabajador y los divertido.

Heaven Mendez- Media Fluency

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 10:34 am
When most people think of themselves, they try to picture things that they like, personal interests, musical tastes, favorite colors, things of that sort.  However, do they ever think of things that can describe them as a whole? After receiving an assignment in tech class and playing around a bit, on keynote, I've came up with this slide, describing not only myself, currently, but also my experiences at SLA. This assignment called for a slide made with inspiration from a few websites, that depicted something about the student. Basically, some personal aspect of that student. Although this is pretty small, this is something that can describe me as a whole!
The design, although simple, took a large amount of thought placed into it. For example, the slide is a mixture of different blues. Originally, I wanted the slide to have a multitude of different bright colors, but people would only be transfixed on the color, and not on the words, or meaning, from the text placed at the bottom. I wanted to find something, not only simple, but fitting for the message written at the bottom. How fitting is adorable rows of different stars, under a positive message? It only makes sense! The color isn't very eye catching, however, it is very bright, allowing others to look long enough to admire the design, as well as the statement below, which is what everyone hopes for, when creating anything for public viewing.
The text, was also a big decision in the process. I couldn't decide whether to use a humorous phrase, or a logistical phrase. Then, it hit me. Because the slide was about me, why not use something that one, people can relate to, and two, something that I've learned, as a ninth grader? After much thought, I produced the sentence, "Everyone's a star, you just got to let your light shine,' in reference to the many positive pieces of advice given to me throughout my first few months in high school. I know the phrase may be overused, and said probably a million times, but it's important for people to remember. Everyone has that one thing that sets them apart from everyone else, therefore, making them unique. The only thing is, they shouldn't be afraid to let that, 'light,' shine, and stand out of the crowd. Taking both the ideas of empty space, simplicity, and a positive message, this is how I came up with the slide, describing me!
It's been only a few months here, but I'm learning a lot about myself. The lessons taken from SLA, and even tech class will stay with me for a long time, even after I graduate from SLA! Anyone can do anything, as long as they have confidence in themselves, that's certain.

-Reflection-

I made a slight change to the original slide. The text was off toward the side in the first one, which didn't allow the slide to be as, quote on quote, 'good,' as it should've been. I also played around with how the background image was, in order to have the entire image shown, and have less pieces of it cut off.

How to greet and ask how someone how they're doing in Spanish.

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 6:11 pm
Greeting someone in spanish is just as easy as doing it in english! All you really need to know is the difference between informal and formal greetings, and of course how to actually greet someone! The chart below will show you how to informally greet someone, such as a close friend, and how to respond when they ask you how you feel.Screen Shot 2012-10-24 at 6.13.44 PM
Notice the (S) and (Ud) in the second column. What do those two letters mean? The (s) shows that to greet someone informally, you would say 'Como estas,' instead of 'Como esta,' which is the shortened version of greeting someone with respect. The (Ud) is used when greeting someone of high respect, like your grandparents, or your parents. Ud. stands for 'usted.' Pretty simple, no? With practice, you'll get this down in no time! ¡Adios!
For extra practice, check out these flashcards!

Here is a video of a high school student greeting a new spanish classmate. Notice how most of the phrases above are used, throughout the entire video.

How To Describe The Weather In Spanish.

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 5:57 pm
Although you probably already know how to say the weather in english, learning it in spanish is a helpful skill as well! Even though its a bit difference from what you may be used to, it's quite easy, and is really useful! To start, you need to know the how to describe the differences in weather, which is again, really simple. Some of the words are even based off of english words! The first  chart below explains the basic phrases, commonly used when giving the weather en español.

Notice how some things say 'bastante,' and 'parcialmente/mayormente.' Those are words that help describe the weather more accurately. You wouldn't want to tell someone it's just cold, when it's below freezing outside, would you? Knowing the various words and their meanings in spanish, is key if you want to speak fluently!  Now that you've learned how to describe the weather, let's move on to how to ask and give it!  Asking for the weather is not a hard concept to grasp. Since you've just learned the word 'tiempo,' which translates to 'weather,' in english, all you need to do is connect that knowledge with a few other words! Anyway, to ask for the weather, you would need to say, "¿Qué tiempo hace hoy?" which translates to 'What's the weather like?" Simple, right?

Alternatively, you can also learn the seasons, if you're trying to learn how to describe the weather during a certain part of the year. The second chart below should help! With practice, you'll be telling the weather in no time! ¡Adios!

Here's a video of a situation that could've been avoided by knowing the weather in spanish.

Mendez Heaven Lucid Chart- My Home Network

Posted by Heaven Mendez in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 11:36 am
This is my Home Network, or my LAN. Consisting of both wireless, and wired connections, I have a total of six devices on my network, including a printer, two gaming consoles, two laptops, a smart phone, and one desktop computer. The network is controlled by a modem, which then powers the wireless router, as well as the wired connection to the desktop. Simply speaking, LAN's are pretty complex!

Before even learning about my LAN, i had no idea how they even worked! I just though that you plugged whatever it was that you wanted to use for internet, and it just signed you in! I honestly had no idea that there was more to internet, beyond a wireless connection. I did know that a desktop had to be plugged into something else for power, but that was about it. Seeing that it had to be connected to the home phone line, which had to be hooked up to the router, then plugged into the computer was the way it worked. Learning about my LAN has taught me a lot about how networks work.

After everything I've realized after learning how LAN's work, I do have some advice to other owners of networks. Try and get yourself familiarized with your network! It may sound strange at first, but trust me, it's a pretty important skill to have! Understanding your home network, can open a variety of useful information that can prove handy in the near future. Other than that, all I can say is enjoy your experience with the internet!
