For my capstone, I wanted to use the engineering skills I’ve learned over the years to create a product that has an impact on our communities. This came in the form of a drone that assists firefighters in high priority responses, specifically with intel gathering and communication before anyone arrives on site. It was important that I researched every aspect of this project including drone mechanics, drone modification, thermal imaging, and firefighting protocol. I made sure I was talking with experts in different fields such as the manufacturer of the drone I was planning on using, a photographer who flies drones for a living, and a fire marshal. The final product is a dual intel gathering and communication system connected to a drone with a modified thermal camera, giving firefighters the essential information they need before they show up one site. I created a detailed conceptual design for my project with the plan of completing it over the summer.

Grahm Bacon's Capstone

For my capstone, I wanted to combine Engineering with my love for Marine Science. With this, I decided to create a reef tank. I also built a cabinet/stand for the tank and its own filtration system. However, the reef tank is not complete. I am donating my capstone to Kids on 12th however they are moving in June. This does not allow me to add any of the life into the tank. If I did, it would make it nearly impossible to move without harming the life within the tank. For this project, a lot of research needed to be done. I needed all the components of my project to work together in order for life to sustain itself. This project was very difficult for me. All throughout this project, I struggled with myself when it came to getting over my fears of failing and getting over many frustrating obstacles. The biggest challenge I struggled with was time management. Even though this is the case, I feel that I grew a lot on a personal and a student level. Despite all of this I had a really fun time building this project and learning many new things from carpentry to time management. For my capstone, I developed a business plan for a mock company named E-Receipt. The company is a receipt storing app that is linked with any sort of digital payment, such as credit card, apple pay, visa, etc. Our mission is that we can provide organization to people’s lives and help the environment by reducing the number of paper receipts that needed to be printed. Consumers can use the app to monitor spending, save receipts or coupons for discount shopping, and save paper, among other reasons. The business plan is a thorough 30+ page business plan that is roughly 7000 words along with detailed cash flow forecasts and balance statements to provide support. I chose this project because it is true to my interests and the type of work that I plan to do in the future. Thank you to everyone that helped me in this process!
