In our video, we show the current struggle of what it is like to live in Venezuela. We have a guest interviewer share her personal experiences in Venezuela, and advertise a new candidate for president of Venezuela (portrayed by Olu).

My element is named sulfur and the atomic number is 16. It is a nonmetal and the atomic symbol is S. Sulfur is in the bible with the name brimstone and it is mentioned in the Odyssey. It was discovered in 1777 by Antoine Lavoisier. He discovered that it was an element and not a compound. Sulfur takes up 3% of the earth’s mass, so I included an earth and with a “3%” on it. I did this because I thought it was the best way to represent that sulfur is 3% of the earth’s mass. I first brainstormed ideas for my print, and chose a final idea. Once we had our final design on paper, we traced it onto tracing paper. After that, we carved our design onto a plate. We then rolled paint onto the plates and then pasted them on a piece of paper. After one week, the paint dried and we cut out the pictures and pasted them onto a paper with a one inch frame. I would have made my design a little less complicated if I were to do it again. It is difficult to completely understand the idea of my print/matt at first glance. I enjoyed making the design for our print. It was fun researching our element and brainstorming possible ideas for our print.

Negative space and positive space cut out

Posted by Derek Jordan in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 9:15 am

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space around the subjects of an image. Negative space is basically the background of a photo.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

My picture is an owl. One half of the owl is black with a yellow background and the the other is a yellow owl with a black background. Negative space is the background in both halves, but the two negative spaces are both different colors. This shows that negative space can be any color.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

Seeing in negative space can help an artist make the image focused on one thing. Negative space can be helpful for making the subject a specific size or distance away.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

Yes, negative space helps bring balance to a piece of art and helps define the boundaries of positive space. The negative space makes us focus on the subject of the image, even if the majority of the picture is the background.

Printmaking

Posted by Derek Jordan in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 9:02 am
Printmaking is a form of artwork in which an artwork can made into multiple copies, called prints. This usually occurs on paper. Printmaking originated in China around AD 105. It has been used to recreate many artworks sold in large amounts to the public. It is also is how many artists of the past and present became famous. There are many different types of printmaking, such as relief printing and intaglio. All of the different printing types are important and they are necessary to many things we have in the world today.

The invention of printmaking was revolutionary. It became a very important art form that made many artists famous. Also, it became a way to produce an art into many copies. Printmaking is used for making books, newspapers, and any type literature printed on paper. This made the invention of printmaking revolutionary to the worlds of art and literature.  Image result for printmaking artwork

The print shows a black bird, possibly a raven, flying over a black body of water with white dots. I notice black and white swirls in the background. The painting has a contrast of white and black. The close-up of the bird makes us focus on the bird. It looks like it is night time, I think this because the water is a majority black. I think this is a good painting because it shows excellent contrast and the swirls in the sky make it mysterious. I wonder what the white and black swirls in the background symbolize? Is the bird lonely because it is flying alone?

My Home Network

Posted by Derek Jordan in Technology - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 5:23 pm

explain your L.A.N. Local Area Network - all the devices on your internet connection.

My L.A.N. is my home wifi. All the devices in my home are connected to it, including phones and computers.

reflect on what you learned about networks, did you have an OMG moment that you learned something new and interesting? if now write about what you learned.

I did not know about routers and how they take the internet connection and disperse it to all of your devices. I also found where the router is in my house.

what would you tell other people that they need to know about having an ISP/Home network?

Do not get cheated by the system. Cable and Verizon are selling you a lot of stuff that is completely unnecessary.
