For my capstone I wanted to do something that would have a lasting effect on the school.  I was thinking about giving something to the school as part of my project.  I started to think about my interests.  One of my biggest interests is botany.  I then decided I wanted to donate plants to enhance the decor of the school.  I began my research at the Horticultural Society Library where I learned about which plants grow best indoors.  I also learned about the effects plants have on work places - that they increase productivity and attendance.  As well, there is the benefit of the oxygen that plants provide.  My project then took me through the steps of purchasing, transporting and repotting the plants I chose for the area on the second floor outside the elevators (near the nurse's office).  One of the greatest experiences I had while repotting the plants was with all the people who were walking by at the time. Everyone was saying that it was really nice, and it looked great.  Other people stopped to asked me questions about my knowledge of plants and how to take care of their own plants.  And some people had advice for helping me.  My project will continue on after I leave SLA.  I have passed on the torch to the students in the lower grades who have volunteered to take on the responsibility of watering and caring for the plants.  I really enjoyed my project and I hope others will too for a long time to come.  Below are some pictures of the area where the plants have found a new home.

NaQuan Harding Capstone

For my Capstone, I wanted to truly test my skills as a writer. So, I decided to attempt at writing a novel. Specifically, I wanted to aim for a word range between 150,000–200,000  words. Throughout my life, I’ve only been writing short stories; the longest one that I’ve ever written was around 20,000 words long, so this is a very large jump for me. I feel like I’ve read more than enough novels in my life to understand the general plot structure, such as build-up, exposition, character development, etc. As a result, I think that I’d be able to pull it off. 


However, there’s one other thing that I want to test myself on as a writer. When it comes to my writing style, I’m very literal and up front when it comes to my use of words. I’m very conservative–hesitant, even–to try and use things like metaphors, similes, and symbolism. I want to try and change that in this project, even if it ends up hurting the story overall because of it. It’s a risk, but I won’t know if I won’t try. 


In the end, even though it isn’t finished, I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot as a writer. Even looking back, I can see a million different ways to change the story as is.

Fitness and Nutrition

My capstone was a project that I wanted to do so that I could incorporate fitness and nutrition into the daily lives of those who are not generally offered it. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of the elderly, because I know they don't get much exercise. I wanted to be able to get them up and going and energized so that they could be happier and feel better about themselves because working out and being healthy generally makes people happier, because it sends messages to your brain that stimulate it and make it more positive. I teach a zumba class as well as ballet and tap to young children from my dance studio, and that is how I came up with all of the moves for this project. Also, when I went to get my tests done in order to volunteer at Masonic Village Elderly Home I spoke to the old people about what kind of music they like, so that I could make everything upbeat and fun for their age group since I'm not used to teaching anyone over the age of 13. This is when I began attending the older zumba classes (ages 25+) to get a feel of what people in that age range could do. I did a lot of research, made a playlist and was ready to teach zumba every Wednesday. Unfortunately, no one signed up for my zumba class. My outside mentor didn't tell me this, so when I showed up I was told to leave because no one signed up. This is when I had the idea to teach it to the staff members working at the home. I tried to set this up with Kelly but she was very hard to get in touch with and just stopped answering my calls/messages all together. This is when I got really discouraged because I couldn't teach a class, they wouldn't send my TB tests over to me and my mom so that I could go to a different home, so I didn't know what to do. This is when I got the idea to pass out fliers and speak to kids in the halls of SLA about what they can do about eating better and getting daily exercise and how it would be beneficial to them. This was really fun and ended up being better than I expected. For my presentation I will be showing a 3 minute mini lesson on what I planned on doing with zumba, speaking about my research and exactly what happened when my plan failed, and how I picked it back up again by speaking to students and hanging fliers around school to get the word out that eating healthy is cool! I also posted some fliers around my neighborhood. All of my annotated citations are on the document in the folder with the screen shots of my keynote presentation

Abstract:

My project is a continuation of a project I started in Herman class last year. The project instructions was to come with up with a topic of our choice, and realize that everything has a history. I choose to do mine on Special education and the outlook society gives them. Mr. Herman came up with the idea that I should start it last year and use it for my capstone for the following year because I want to be a teacher. My final project is a video partially made from last year and the rest from the observations I have done this year while visiting Pennsylvania school for the Deaf.

Water Pump Design Capstone

Abstract

For my capstone I want to redesign the UNICF water pumps that are used in developing countries such as Malawi, Africa. These water pumps are miles away from some families, they are fragile, and they do not provide enough water for all the work that is being put in to pump it. I want to design sturdier and easier to use pumps that will be closer to the families. The reason why I am passionate about this project is from my personal experience in Africa using the pumps. While I was there the pump broke and it took a few minutes to pump a bucket of water. The most horrifying part was that my family was a 45-minute walk from the water pump and some families were even farther.  Water is a pivotal aspect to life and should be easy to access. By producing and perhaps designing a functional water pump, I think that it will show my research and knowledge of engineering. This capstone will also show my growth in building and critical thinking skills.

The design I had in mind for my capstone was to design water pumps that have multiple purposes and I ened up with a pump that is similar to a soccer goal. When the ball hits the panels it will generate energy and power a piston. That piston will bring up ground water, that will be drinkable due to the ceramic filtering. Isabella Tognini Capstone

Project: "Ode to Teenagehood"

Mentor: Eileen Tognini

​I started this school year, assuming that I should make a capstone that has to do with what I wanted to do in college, which is to study business and economics. Though after awhile and have a few suggestions from friends and family, I figured that I should save all of that for college, and do something hands-on and creative, which I won't get much of a chance to do in college. This made me think about a big part of my life, which is art. My Mother, Eileen Tognini is an art curator, and I've always lived with art in my house. Since I'm such a supporter of art and because the school district isn't so supportive of art classes, I figured I'd create something that embraces the art community at SLA, an area in which I love to collaborate in. The first part of this capstone was a Van's Custom Culture competition. Ms. Hull and I selected a handful of students who would help out with the design of four pairs of shoes. This part took some serious management and time to finish. The second part of my capstone was an art gallery in the third floor ballroom, called "Ode to Teenagehood". My goal for the space was to exhibit what we create in high school, including poems, sketches, paintings, and photographs. For my entire project, I collaborated with many students, one of them being my partner, Bernicia.

Mohamed Marzouk, Capstone 2013

For my capstone, I initially struggled to find an idea I'd like and can enjoy doing for an entire year. I wanted something I was passionate about, and I knew that debate was something that I've been passionate about about for a long time. So, I reached out and contacted members of Penn For Youth Debate, an organization that promotes debate in inter-city Philadelphia and holds debate tournaments, debate events, and sends volunteers to other schools. I started volunteering with Middle School kids at Russel Byers Middle School, on 19th and Arch. Partnering up with my outside of school mentor, Connie Hua, we volunteered on alternate days and enhanced the debate skills of the students by coaching them using a lot of different avenues of coaching. Coaching such as: speaking drills, reading drills, flowing skills, cross fire skills, and etc. I've been volunteering since October and Russel Byers has excelled the most this season, winning many, many awards.

Jessica Hinton Capstone

​I’ve always enjoyed creating music. Whether I was sampling other songs or making my own tracks using instruments or beats in Garageband. I’ve created songs in the past for projects, and created songs just for fun. For my capstone, I decided that I would create and produce a gospel album. I chose to use my church choir, and we recorded 8 songs for the album. For my capstone project, I decided to create individual makeup styles/looks that were inspired by different things in the everyday world that stood out to me. These inspirations range from the beautiful colors in the skyline, different types of fashion trends and stereotypes, movies and even just things that happened to catch my eye as i walked down the street. As an aspiring makeup artist, I love mixing it up and creating new funky looks, why not use the array of things we see around us everyday for that inspiration?
