Abstract:

My project is a continuation of a project I started in Herman class last year. The project instructions was to come with up with a topic of our choice, and realize that everything has a history. I choose to do mine on Special education and the outlook society gives them. Mr. Herman came up with the idea that I should start it last year and use it for my capstone for the following year because I want to be a teacher. My final project is a video partially made from last year and the rest from the observations I have done this year while visiting Pennsylvania school for the Deaf.

Q2

Posted by Toni Marshall in Art Advanced - Hull on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at 8:34 pm
This quarter I decided to embark in the challenge of recreating a project I attempted to complete, but never finished two years ago. The project consists of creating a poem, because I'm not the best at drawing, enlarge it then spray paint it on the windows in the classroom.

The way to do this is the following:
Create the poem
Print out the poem after you figure out the conversion from inches to points.
Then cut out each individual letter creating a stencil using a box cutter.

Ms.Hull and I then realized it would be way cooler to print out each word rather than letters and on colored paper using different fonts. I am going to try to complete this project by the end of the Third quarter, I am very excited to see the final results. Every different method we try is a learning lesson so hopefully this one is a winner. I am glad I decided to tackle this project again my senior year, it gives my class something to be proud of and remember.

For this quarter, I had a lot of free time to explore different things and develop new creative ideas. I had the chance to get a bit of writing done which is something I never get a chance to do anymore. I also got to make my college essay amazing and creative because of the time we had, and I think that is the greatest type of art there is.

I also got the chance to create traditional sugar mask that are apart of a Mexican tradition. I used Frankie's face to do the mold, and I painted it so it can resemble a warrior. I purposely had him keep his mouth open wide so my mask can appear to be screaming something. I painted my mask blue, red and black. I think those colors represent being bold and courageous.

Here is my mask here:

Patriot Act

Posted by Toni Marshall in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 7:53 pm

The Patriot act is just a pretty painted legal opportunity slowly striping away U.S citizen’s rights. The patriot does have its perks when the person that they are targeting is actually planning a terroristic act. The problem that the government might “run into” is targeting individuals who show no sign of being a terrorist.

In my opinion the Patriot act is simply racial profiling behind wires. After the nine eleven attack the news and other sources that deliver our information to us put the idea in the peoples head that anyone from the middle east is a terrorist and we should be afraid if we see these people in garbs and near tall buildings. With that being said             when the act was passed everyone thought it was a fantastic idea because it would only focus on the people who attacked our country.

The issue with that is this act not only takes away the privacy of the citizens but takes away the right for us to know when it is happening to us as well. It is too much power for the government to have. The government gets to define what enough evidence and how appropriate it is for a tap to be done on someone’s phone, search emails etc.

I honestly do not believe that the Patriot Act is explained to the citizens enough for them to understand exactly what it means and how it will affect them. I also believe that the Patriot  Act not longer serves as its original purpose if more citizens within the country are under surveillance than the “terrorist” we are trying to stop and keep track of.

Enemy of the state

Posted by Toni Marshall in American Government - Herman on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 12:00 am

In this movie I found the things that occurred on the governments behalf not to be surprising at all. The American government keeps major things from us that go against all of our rights as citizens. I don’t know who determines the definition of the terms “safety”, “protect” and “citizen” and what it means to the government of the United States. It is appalling to me that the “citizens” we are “protecting” had no idea that devices used and created for terrorist could at any moment be them.

In the movie Dean played by Will Smith kept repeating that he had no idea what was going on and why it was happening. In the scene when he meets up with the real Brill his ignorance as a citizen shows also when him and his wife are in the kitchen and she emphasizes how important it is for us to know about the changes that are made and how our privacy might be on the line. That is the issue with Americans they don’t follow up on current government changes and they don’t ask questions when there is confusion with a bill or law.

This movie was created well before the 9-11 attack, which says a lot. In movies I realized that if it is in a film already and it involves sensitive information about how the government operates. The government is way past the technology they use to “detect terrorists”. I do not agree with the government having access to cutting my phone lines, tapping into my phone and freezing my accounts. In the movie and reality the public should be more aware of the governments gadgets and when it is happening to them. Overall the thought of someone constantly watching you is here and always has been. I have every doubt that the government does not know the definition of acceptable and enough evidence to investigate someone. To be frank we are all being investigated and watched. I wouldn't be surprised if I got locked up for my Anti American views they might think that is enough evidence to wreck my home and ruin my life just like in the movie.

Q4

Posted by Toni Marshall in Advanced Art - Hull on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 1:58 pm
A lot of the work I did was randomly thrown away fourth quarter, I do not have many pictures.
The first piece I did was emotional abstract. The emotion I tried to do and get across was anger. I used dark colors such as black, rich reds and dark blue. I tried to make a messy but edgy piece, I used hard edge shapes such as triangles and pentagons to me they are hard edged.
The next piece which was my favorite was the movement abstract. I decided to do the motion of blood and how it changes colors once oxygen touches it. So I used the colors blue, red and purple. I decided to laminate the entire paper and paint veins on top of it to show the human body so people understood.
For the rest of the quarter I decided to do iphonetography. I took a bunch of pictures and edited the film. I tried to use different focuses and really understand film. I also tried to only use the natural picture instead of the edits.

Chemical reactions

Posted by Toni Marshall in Physics - Echols on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 2:28 pm
 By: Toni and Taahir

There are six chemical reactions.

Combustion is when oxygen combines with another compound to create water and carbon dioxide, this reaction is considered to be exothermic which simply means that this reaction creates heat.

combustion-safety-carbon-monoxide-bpi-single-point-test

Synthesis this reaction is when two or more simple compounds come together in order to create a complicated compound.

synthesis

Decomposition is the complete opposite of synthesis, this occurs when a molecule that is complex breaks down into simpler molecules.

decomposition

Single displacement is when one element trades places with another element while in a compound.

singlereplacement

Double displacement is when the anions and cations of two different molecules switch places, which then turns into two complete different compounds.

doubledisplacement

Acid-Base is a certain kind of double displacement reaction that happens when a acid and base react with one another. The H+ion in the acid reacts with the OH ion in the base.

acid-base-chemistry-3284

Some experiments that have been conducted by us are mixing potassium promaginite and glycerin that causes an exothermic reaction. Based on the six different types of Chemical reactions which type of chemical reaction does this experiment give?

7

Another experiment example: Sodium and water in chlorine gas which produces a lot of heat but it also turns into sodium chloride which is just common salt. What reaction does it give?

SodiumChlorineReaction

A third example is when Helium is cooled to -271 degrees Celsius. It is called lambda point. Once it hits this point it is considered helium II or helium superfluid.

What reaction is this?

helium-3

Things that affect Reaction are

AGITATION:  Anything that cause particles to move, shaking and stirring are actions that result in  the movement of particles. This leads to more collisions, and a higher reaction rate.

CATALYST: Is something that helps initiate a reaction, but isn't considered a reactant or a product. It increases the rate at which chemical reactions can occur. The catalyst is not depleted during the reaction.

CONCENTRATION:

When there are more particles in a given volume, the amount of times these particles will collide is greater when the are less particles. The more  particles/less space per volume, the faster the reaction will occur.

PRESSURE: The higher the pressure there is on a container, the lower the volume will be (less space, which leads to more collision and more often), which will also increase the speed of the reaction.

SURFACE AREA:  The amount of particles found on the surface of that are open to collision.  Larger objects have surfaces with particles that are less exposed, which means fewer collisions.  Objects that are smaller have more particles in contact with a surface, which would allow for more collisions to occur.  Chemical reactions occur at a higher rate when their reactants cover more surface area.

Child abuse

Posted by Toni Marshall in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 10:44 am

Throughout this project I found the most difficult part to be not having enough time to really think of a more creative way to campaign my topic. Also I didn’t have the option of picking my own topic and group, so I just wanted to get the project done. I chose to create an iweb, by doing so I found it easy to organize my information and have a polished and clean-cut presentation. The theme to have the information in black and white makes the topic I am presenting more serious. I can’t have bright rainbow colors describing child abuse because it gives off the tone it is a joke. I think my group members worked well with the exception of a few people. Because they were assigned such important roles in the project it was frustrating because that meant people had to pick up the baggage they left.

In the beginning we were going to target DHS as our audience. We then changed our audience to have more effectiveness for the topic. We decided to target adults, we figured that these issues start at home some the parents should be aware of the effects. Also we provided a page with the signs of child abuse so people know exactly how a person being affected behaves. We added a site tracker to our page so we can show how many people look at our site. My group members and I also posted our website link on twitter to spread the word. We found by doing that a lot of people even teenagers went onto the site to check it out. This project overall was very fasted paced and straight forward which was difficult but got the job done with some of my teammates.

Chile

Posted by Toni Marshall in American History - Herman on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 11:38 pm
My script

It’s something so beautiful about tragedy, about hearts breaking into terroristic hands. There is a story lying beneath the ashes, the body, Someone’s soul died inside of that building,

He was a husband, a son, a

father and Pinochet took his titles away from him.

Who gave him the right to play god?

No one spoke of it in Chile; my people are losing all hope for something greater than them, an idea that can change how their kids and grand children will view their heritage and country,

I never want them to be ashamed of where they come from,

The mesh of tracery and triumph that shifted the way the world looked at us.

I think we are allowing outside forces and Pinochet to destroy us because we depend on the idea of liberation from all of the horrible things in the world,

We fell for his tactics,

We allowed him to twist our thoughts and bullets through our skulls,

How many lives will be lost lessoning the chance of ever gaining happiness.

I was told the United States decided to help wreck my homeland and leader because they felt it was necessary to force the American dream through our soil that my parents grew crops on to feed us,

They never put food on the table for us they just stripped us of everything we owned

Allende was found with bullet wounds and our future, all we ask is why wasn’t there any say of the people?

Just the United States and Pinochet opinions on how we should live

Oh the glorious wonders of destruction,

On September 29, 2003

It was revealed that the United States government helped create a monster.

We worked so hard for a revolution it was disregarded because the peoples weren’t good enough for a vote or valid explanation. “Voting boxes are like suggestions not everything inside matter”

My process
The world is so much greater than the United states, as a citizen here I tend to forget that Americans often exaggerate our circumstances and not look at the horrible things and triumphs that happen in other countries. I chose Chile because I usually focus on Puerto Rico because that is apart of my heritage. Spanish is the language that bonds us all together as Latinos, so I knew I wanted to focus on something close to home but far enough to learn something. I asked a friend of mine who is from Peru if she knew any interesting topics that involved the United States as well as a Latino country, “The First 9/11” is what she suggested.  Once I started researching the topic I became very interested and looked all over for resources.

When I started the assignment I looked through the textbook my friend had from her history of Spanish class. I didn’t really find any useful information in that book. I then searched the term “the first 9/11” once I searched that into Google so many resources came up from the past as well as recent findings such as the United States involvement in the coup that was formed against Allende.
I am choosing to do a spoken word performance. I have been doing performance poetry for three years, I never did a character piece or historical. I hope that it will improve my writing style and performance. I am interested in what I come up with for the actual acting aspect of it.
The revolution in my topic was the government trying to develop itself from extreme opposites, which was socialism to democracy. The reaction can be from the perspective of the people who participated in the coup that Pinochet conducted or the reaction from people who were supporters of Allende. The reform was the people taking control on how they wanted their lives to be lead, they tried to rebuild their government and get Pinochet out of power because essentially he was a dictator.

CIA Acknowledges Ties to Pinochet’s Repression.” The National Security Archive. Chile Documentation Project, n.d. Web. <http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/news/20000919/index.html>.
In this article the source was given to the Public on September 20, 2000. The event chosen to use in this project happened in 1973. The Chile revolution had a lot of missing pieces; the government in the United States as well as the Chile government was very oblivious to the outside involvement. The United States congress demanded that the CIA tell the role that they played during the 1970’s era covert. The CIA developed a relationship with the Chile intelligence agency, which was known as one of the country’s worst humans rights abusers. The CIA also gave him a deposit of cash. Using this source with help with the understanding on why the people was so confused and wanted to over throw their government so badly. A lot of things were not told to the public of both the United States as well as Chile, America claims helping the way known abuser was a miscommunication.

Smitha, Frank E. "Chile, to the Overthrow of Allende in 1973." MacroHistory : World History. 2000. Web. 08 Jan. 2012. <http://www.fsmitha.com/h2/ch24y.htm>.
Throughout this article there was a lot of talk about money. The money came from the United States in order to influence the elections. In the beginning Chile had a democracy but then turned into a dictatorship. Chile was a small place the presidents each ran 6 years for their term. Chile wasn’t known for having any problems with having stability within its politics. In the 1950’s the cities began to increase in population and in size. The United States encouraged Chile to make changes within the government because the United States had an alliance for reform with them. Since the United States wanted to keep the democracy they gave money to the government, which knocked the communist elective out of the race the votes said he was winning by 100,000. Allende was that leader at the time, in Chile a person is not supposed to run for two elections and or terms he had told the public he was now standing for a republic and working class. This source gives an understanding on how the elections were run and what the people actually wanted. Also it gives a better understanding because it is a primary source so it is in terms that are easy to understand.

"On This Day September 11, 1973 « Formae Mentis NGO™." Formae Mentis NGO™. Formae Mentis NGO™, 2001. Web. 08 Jan. 2012. <http://formaementis.wordpress.com/2008/09/11/on-this-day-september-11-1973/>.

In this picture it is the presidential palace bombed by the Chile military. The reason for the bombing was to kill the leader because the CIA said that was the only option. I would use this as one of my blog post. I would be writing as one of the citizens that are confused but have a little bit more understanding as to why things are happening and the involvement many of the Chile and US people have. I would tell the story of the picture as if I was there at that moment watching those things happen. I would post questions like what happened to the general of 17 years during this attack on Allende. Because the general was against the plan to attack the general the CIA killed him. The way I would use the picture is a visual framework on the extreme actions the people of the coup took.

"Strange Defeat: The Chilean Revolution, 1973." Libcom.org. Ed. Mike Harman. Pointblank, 1973. Web. 08 Jan. 2012. <http://libcom.org/library/strange-defeat-chilean-revolution-1973-pointblank>.
I will use this source to help me have an idea on what my paper should look like and how I should deliver it since it was written during that time from the view point of a political official, I am going to try to take the role of a citizen and try to make it make sense so the reader would understand because in all of the articles I read from that time even now I still did not fully grasp what happened exactly. So I will rewrite that point of view being as accurate as possible.

Ackerman, Peter. "CHILE - DEFEAT OF A DICTATOR." A Force More Powerful. 2000. Web. 08 Jan. 2012. <http://www.aforcemorepowerful.org/films/afmp/stories/chile.php>.
I would use this picture of General Augusto Pinochet and give a description of who he is and the role he played in the defeat of the government. I think I would try to create a story to try and give a perspective of what he said and how the nation felt during this time. I think I will create a story using factual information but put myself in the mindset of a person who was affected by the general the most and the outside involvement of the CIA. This picture could be someones nightmare or dream come true I don’t know which role I would play yet,

Allende, Overthrowing. "Cold War Killer File: Augusto Pinochet « The Red Phoenix."The Red Phoenix. American Party of Labor. Web. 08 Jan. 2012. <http://theredphoenixapl.org/2010/09/11/cold-war-killer-file-augusto-pinochet/>.
This source is the third picture given on the site. The picture is a protest for Allende, The average person in Chile appreciated and agreed with his methods. The protest is going to be used as me taking the picture and explaining what is going on and why the people agree or disagree with the protest. Also if the protest sparked the invasion on the palace. The picture shows one of the actions taken to begin the over riding of the government. I am going to use this picture as a way to clarify what events occurred and how it effected the people. I am going to find similar pictures and analyze all of them and make a slide show to give the full story for the situation.

"Untitled Document." The Beacon School, NYC. 2008. Web. 08 Jan. 2012. <http://www.beaconschool.org/~lmoscow/chile/documents.html>
In the source it is a overview of what happened in the Chile revolution it is a middle school and or high school lesson for kids to understand. The source has many questions that would help me grasp what my audience would need to know while I am presenting or while looking at my blog. Also the source has a lot of pictures that I could not find on google images or any of my other sources I found a news

"Death of a Dictator: Victims of Augusto Pinochet's Reign Remember Brutal Regime From the Caravan of Death to Operation Condor." A Daily TV/radio News Program, Hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, Airing on over 900 Stations, Pioneering the Largest Community Media Collaboration in the United States. Web. 11 Dec. 2006. <http://www.democracynow.org/2006/12/11/death_of_a_dictator_victims_of>.
I am going to use this site to show how many people the General killed during his rein in terror after him and his men overthrown the government. The article is specific on exactly what he did during his time in power also it tell us when exactly he died. He died when he was 91 and did a lot of bad things. He transformed the entire government and no one overthrown in. Also the source has quotes from Allende daughter and other family members and there reaction to the generals death. I think that by looking at those quotes I can get into their heads and comment on that for my blog. I can use it to show the effects of her fathers death to an advantage. I think that this source is very beneficial because I’m sure the way she felt about the general remains the same even after all of these years.

http://theredphoenixapl.org/2010/09/11/cold-war-killer-file-augusto-pinochet/
“Sometimes democracy must be bathed in blood.” – Augusto Pinochet
I am going to use this source and quote to show what his mind state was from the beginning. He wanted to show democracy in a bad way. I am going to use this as if I was watching tv and this is what was being said and my reaction to it and the peoples reaction. I think that if i was a supporter of Allende I would lose hope a little bit. This source also has pictures of the general and Allende when he gave his fair well speech. This source has a lot of primary sources.

Big things

This quarter in art I decided to paint on the ceiling tiles. I am not sure exactly why I wanted to do it to begin with but as I continued to create blue prints and things like that I noticed that I just wanted to leave an imprint in the school before I graduated next near. By doing so I wanted to show what SLA means to me by painting slogans and things such as that. I cannot draw very well but I can express myself by painting and using words.
My first process was drawing stuff that didn't divide the classes but bought them closer together. As people realized what I started people who were also in art wanted to join in. By seeing that it made me smile because I did my purpose, I left a footprint in the school for how I want people to feel about each other. I do not if I will continue the project for the next two quarters I plan on starting something else.

My other part of this quarter I remolded a ring my ring made with her new jewelry labeled called Purpose. The ring is made out of broken glass that was shaved down for safety and three nails that were shaved down as well, but it has a dangerous look. I also used wire and a cut up piece of wine cork that made the circle shape, which you put your ringer through. I love this piece and always wanted to do something with broken glass so I did so.

This quarter in art I think I have been able to identify the things I need to improve on as well as have improved on since last year. Normally I would just take the easy way on or do what I am used to in order to get the project done and enjoy at the same time. My original idea was to write poems instead of draw because I was caught in my comfort zone. Ms.Hull encouraged me to try and get better at drawing. Ms.Hull said to me "I can teach you how to draw." I have gained the patience and understanding on what shadowing as well as 3d objects look like.

My first drawing was the first body portrait of Sammy. I do not have a picture because it was destroyed in the hallway. I think that my portrait was better last year because of the angle I was standing at last year. It was a front view of my model. I had to draw the side of her which was a challenge. I wish I had a visual to show the difference between last years to this years. I always enjoy doing the full body portraits because it tests my creativity and my ability to tackle the project accurately.  The second assignment of the quarter was drawing a clear object such as glass or bottle. I think this os the assignment that gives me the most trouble i redid my object three times. I didn't want to look at the tutorial that was provided for us because it would put a damper on my creative thought process and I would try to duplicate what was shown to me, not what I actually see.I enjoyed this quarter once again it is always a enjoyment learning new techniques.

Q4 Artwork

Posted by Toni Marshall in Advanced Art - Hull on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 8:51 pm
This quarter we were assigned numerous assignments,
- Take 200 photos and edit them using a computerized program
- Create a sculpture
- Redraw a piece by a famous artwork
- Draw the bike placed in the classroom and redraw it three times.

The project I found to be the most interesting was the editing pictures that we took. i thought this was very difficult because I had to reiterate the skills I learned last year and research on my own in order learn the program. I have a few examples on the same pictures edited in different textures, and contrast

.
Screen shot 2011-05-02 at 8.57.58 AMScreen shot 2011-05-02 at 8.57.02 AMScreen shot 2011-05-02 at 8.57.21 AMScreen shot 2011-06-11 at 8.50.33 PM

We also had to created a sculpture, I made mines out of cotton, ribbon, and old curtains. My sculpture was sew together as child holding a banquet of flowers. This was a great project for me to do because my aunt helped me with the cutting and sewing I learned a lot of techniques and shortcuts in order to still have enough time to do the project and have a finishing product I could be proud of. I think the skills learned with this project will be utilized later on in my life for multiple things.

The most challenging project was  drawing the bike still life. I think it was challenging because drawing isn't my strong paint and details was a necessity in order to portray what I was drawing. I lost my pictures but I did my negative drawing in yellow, I used the technique of coloring the entire paper then sketch bike with a pencil then using an eraser to create the lines that weren't negative. I found that to be the most difficult. But Mabintu and I worked on our projects very hard and  researched in order to complete the task because we did a lot of it independently.

I also did pointillism for my artwork I recreated, I did not pick a specific artist but I picked a genre which I feel as though shaped the way texture using paint and art was looked at. Using this technique it creates many different sizes, color combinations, and texture on paper making the art pop out more and have more character. It tells a story that only the observer knows once it is looked at. For that I appreciate the art technique. I decided to use the colors that represent the elements of life and put them all together to show that regardless of how opposite they are all four of them is needed to create a balance and understanding of life. This year has been a privilege I was able to express my art and love of poetry and gain an abundance of skills in illustration part of art. I gained the perspective of knowing art just isn't limited to one thing.

Q4 Proyecto

I wrote a poem for this quarters spanish benchmark describing my life goals and past experiences. I had difficulties trying to use my basic knowledge of poetry and incorporating my spanish knowledge as well I had to really utilize my resources around me. I enjoyed this project I got to remember  the good parts about my life that has happened and what to look forward to in the future.

Below is the poem I submitted on paper for my final Spanish two Benchmark!

Melody againist her ribcage

Posted by Toni Marshall in World History - Block on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Descriptions of characters

Mabintu -teen girl from Hati after the Earthquake

Ana Caroline -A 22 year old girl. Died of a eating disorder. She was a Brazilian Model.

Lleana- a teen urban girl, who is a binge eater, and a slam poet.

Samantha- Ana Caroline sister, also her editor.

Act One Scene One

                                                            Mabintu

Our country is drowning in poverty and I hear that people in the united states have people who are stuffing things down their throats and making themselves throw up........ I think it’s, it’s so hard to know that our prices for food have risen so quickly and high we can’t afford to have food and people waste it on their sick problem.......no it’s not real they call it a disorder that is “sweeping the world.” Shortage of food and resource is sweeping the world but no one thinks about that. I am very upset I don’t have a choice if I want to see my ribcage in the morning or a gut. Americans disgust me! They have no regards to, what.... what are we human right? Human!.... they treat us like trash. (speaking very quickly while being distracted by the little boy picking through the rubbish) I seen the skinny people and fat people was in a magazine that was in a pile of trash I was digging through while looking for food.....Just like that kid over there....What do you feel when you seen him....Speechless I know... Just like a typical American..... But back to the point...When I seen it I couldn't help but sit there and just stare at it. I was confused at why the people chose to look like that. I read that those people eat full meals then throw them up or stuff it into their bellies until they cant take anymore. Here in Haiti we eat mud for a meal. Our parents get no more than two dollars a day. Who will eat for us when a whole culture and countries is swallowed by mother earth. I visited America once and the people seemed nice but crazy.....yes I meant to say crazy........I understand this will be in a magazine......I don’t care they are so stupid and they look ugly... What happened to natural beauty.... I know we live in a shit hole But it’s better than being in a rag doll country where everyone is manufactured the same way.... I know you want the interview to be over now.......Don’t say you’re afraid......No your not you are embarrassed to be you!

(Throws the journal the person recording has)

Scene  Two                                                Ana Carolina Reston

(Glances at the journal her editor is writing in )You wanna know something?......Well listen anyway....No seriously I need to say this. I could never figure out why I wasn’t made ya know..... thin enough to fit in the creases of perfection... isn’t that the saying “ thin enough to fit in the creases of perfection”.. you should so add that to my book. Write this.. no I don’t want you to edit what I say write it jsut like this.... I really wish you wouldn’t argue with me so much... if you weren't my sister I would fire you.....Women including myself go to extreme lengths to be beautiful,(in a exaggerated tone) there were many nights when I tried wrapping my waist into zeros in the mirror.......darn im good right?... no don’t write that part!......ugh! there was always a chunk of fat waiting to be scraped off . What I do isn’t wrong. I am an Entire Public service announcement for what little girls should idol. (begins flipping through her portfolio) Photo shop is what a person wants in a makeup kit. Modeling was my life, but keeping up with the latest trends and weight lost secrets was a full time job. It is dangerous to be as beautiful and perfect as me. Wow I sound so stuck up!........When I look in the mirror I see perfect angles and sculpted ligaments....is that too much.....no Don’t rush me I really want your opinion.  you could Play a ultimate melody on my ribcage.....Dude that really not funny. stop laughing!..........(giggles while looking on the bookshelf for another one of her photo albums.) This is what beauty looks like. I would be the most beautiful disaster the world has ever seen. When people look at me I want them to see dedication stitched on my stomach and spine.

(Picks up the book, reads it. Fumbles with pages and drops it by mistakes.)

Scene three                                                            Ileana

(Picks up her book from off the floor while cleaning her room)

Today I Looked in the mirror and cried from my throat. I am not the average black teen. If I don’t have an ass that resembles  “two monster truck tires” in my back pocket I won’t be considered beautiful. (turns around and rubbed on her butt) (in a very sarcastic tone)Men always stressed the fact that “their girl's skin should be darker than a solar eclipse. Nubia soaking their melanin, Kemet rushing through their thighs, Alodian Empires surging through their veins, Onyx type pupils, with rose quartz lips that smile diamonds.”I don’t own any of these traits that my friend Anwar described, I have an ass as flat as a cardboard box drenched in water. Skin like a dying  sun. And my eyes are an unidentified color. Everyone looks at me as if I’m not black enough because I don’t have those qualities. My mom always said to “ you are beautiful no matter what people say.” As of today I don’t believe her. I’ve heard of women dying of eating disorders because they starve themselves. I have been shoving carbs down my throat so I can get that perfect guy. I normally maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle but I’ve been stuffing myself. I need a perfect body. I’ve been using bronze lotions as well so I can have a beautiful skin complexion. Keeping up with beauty tactics can be difficult. My mom has been making comments like “you’re sure eating like a black girl now.” I’ll laugh knowing that I find myself repulsive if I stuff myself and if I am not perfectly molded. I am in a lose lose situation. I just want guys to want me for how I am but until then I’ll stuff myself with regrets and acceptance of others. I want to be that Nubian queen that the sun looks forward to rising to....I need to run this poem about 4 more times and finish editing it. I have a long day ahead of me. Throws herself on the bed and tosses the book so she can memorize.

Ana Caroline

Scene four

(looking at images from a magazine)

I know my name will be carved in history regardless if I die a 22 year old, what they call anorexic girl. Or a 22 year old tragic story. I.....(pauses to think) I think I am pretty just the way I am. the editor and fashion designer said I am too fat. When I visited  China for a modeling shoot the first thing the guy did was look at me with repulsive eyes and said “you’re fat.” So I concluded that if I die They’ll blame it on the media and the fashion designers. The News Papers would read “This isn’t what beauty looks like!” But nothing will change, people don’t change. I’m beautiful I am not looking for the acceptance of others, but the acceptance of myself because I Love the skin I am wrapped in. People always tell me I must know my limit, but that limit doesn’t exist. Who will remember the ordinary girl that was born to be nothing but fat and repulsive? After a while your soul becomes a cesspool. No one will watch you on the tabloids, only your obituary, at least you will be remembered for something risky and extreme. I never contradicted the idea that beauty can be dangerous. I know that I will die soon but at least I will be remembered and written about in magazines until another famous person dies. I am a service announcement. yeah that's What I am A public service announcement.  I’ve been talking to a few girls who do the same stuff I do and I think they are beautiful.  AnywayI hope this isn’t the death of me, but don’t all good things come to an end?  I’m not expecting anything special when everyone realizes that my way of living is the righteous way. The media are too naive to understand the neglect of movement.

Ana Caroline sister Samantha

Scene five

(dies Her sister finds the last entry she wanted into her book.)

Let’s see if I have to edit this too... (Laughs to herself.)......I know she wouldn’t want me to, but for old time sake......Let’s see

“I never understood myself, until one night I had a dream that everyone malfunctions except women, We go on forever never knowing the possibilities of being accepted but god makes easy predicaments perfect for loving ourselves

No matter what shape or form we have been molded into we are created strategically,

placed in gods spine so he can keep the world shining with our light. We keep the world spinning when a eclipse occurs we are there to enlighten everyone else with our spirit. I I never let anyone tell me other wise

I’m are perfect.(sits there just staring at the paper hands shaking)....Wow I never knew my sister had such a problem until now. I would look at her and make jokes but nothing serious... (Begins to cry) I wonder why I didn’t help her, why didn’t I love her enough to help her get better. I need her.....I feel so horrible that I used to call her a twig and make jokes about her eating habits. I swear I love my sister, I couldn’t imagine life without her. I swept her off the earth just as quickly as she did it t herself....I wonder what my mother would think.

Scene six

                                                                        Illeana

(going into a rehab center sitting in a group therapy session)

So my parents finally figured out what I’ve been doing to myself......They actually made jokes. I knew the wouldn’t understand. It was different when they seen me devouring food, and actually knew I had a problem. Everyone at the dinner table seemed to be staring at me, Was I some type of animal at a zoo?...... I think I’m talking too much someone else can go.....I don’t feel like I’m making progress!......Okay if you really want me to finish I don’t see the point of group therapy anyway!..... After about two days they decided to call this stupid place........ My parents  asked stupid questions like “am I wasting my money? Is this even a real disorder?” They didn’t seem to like the response...... I feel so helpless and dumb having to say this out loud in front of everyone..... I know everyone here have similar issues.....can you just let me finish?? I’m  beginning to have what yall therapist call (makes air quotes) “suicidal thoughts.” I’m very depressed this over stuffing thing isn’t worth it.......damn This rehab must really be kicking in. I hate that we have to write in these stupid journal  entries everyday.......but whatever, I guess it’s helping.

Scene seven

Ileana

(gets out of hospital , walking through hallway with nurse)

You know I don’t need the wheel chair right?......who cares if it’s protocol....I want to walk....I feel fine and I think I look eh... okay I look okay. I haven’t said that in forever, Come to think about it I never really ever said it. …. life can only get better from here.. right?....I’m worried that I will fall into my old ways …. I don’t want to have to come back here.

Q3 Advanced Art

Posted by Toni Marshall in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 12:35 am
In quarter 3 I had many difficulties. I had already made up my mind that I couldn't draw and everything I did would come out horrible. My full body drawing was misplaced and That was my biggest accomplishment. I think the things I learned most this quarter was how to do shading and shadowing to make the most accurate drawing. Trying to portray realism was difficult because while drawing a persons already has a sense and idea of how they think that figure and or object looks like. I kept a repetitive saying in my head that Ms.Hull said to us she said" draw what you see not what you think is there." That is the only thing that kept me going in this project. My self portrait had to be the task that I used that saying the most. I kept saying I'm pretty sure that is what I look like, but turned out the final product looked nothing like me. I then started over and drew exactly what I seen, the project came out just the way I wanted it to, just like me. This quarter has been a challenge but I learned a lot from it that is the most beneficial.

Op Ed

                   Who will cry for them?

When growing up men are told two things; “never show emotions it makes you seem weak and never lay your hands on a women.” Those two rules ruins the way men are looked at in society and doesn’t preserve their rights as human beings. For ages women have fought for rights, only to throw them away by playing victim.  There is an epidemic that is sweeping the world and destroying cultures based on how women should carry themselves and how men should be presented in society.

When growing up in school people hear about not having a good report with their father or not knowing them at all, the justification usually heard is “he let after the he found out my mom was pregnant.” Women always tend to victimize themselves. Unless the sex wasn’t consensual then the women had the choice to wear a condom or protect her self and preserve her future the best way she could.

Women usually put themselves in a situation where they can play victim.  In some cases women will deliberately poke holes in condoms, hoping being pregnant will keep the guy around.  When Hilary Clinton was running for president in 2008 she was bashed with cartoons that held negative connotations regarding women and their status in society, during that process many women around the world were outraged. Yet everyday women degrade themselves and put themselves in harmful situations that they can prevent and/or stand up to.

An incident that occurred February 25th is a perfect example of how women put themselves in a predicament that will do harm. In Manhattan, New York a man was in his car trying to find a parking space, he seen a women who was standing on the driver side of her car, he assumed she was pulling out of the space. He then waited and she refused to move from the space they began to argue, he got out of his car and she then decided to hit him repeatedly. He hit her one time to defend him self she fell to the ground, hit her head, she was then in a coma.

In this situation there were blog posts from many different places that bashed that mans character. It said things like “It doesn’t matter that she hit him, a man has no right to hit her back.” Women wrote the majority of the quotes that shows how much they want to be pitied. If a women acts like a man and does bodily harm to a man then he has the right to do the same. The most degrading thing a woman could do to herself is playing the victim in a situation that could destroy another person’s life.

There is a difference between abusing someone and a person defending themselves. Society tends to draw a vague line between what the borders are for being a women and being a man are.  There is no vague line between being a human there is no excuse for why men shouldn’t be able to defend themselves if someone does physical harm to them.

These two rules: “never show emotions, it makes you seem weak and never lay your hands on a women.” Should be the most insulting thing to a women and the thing men should want to change most in order to be considered equal to one another and human.

mi rutina diaria

In this project I learned how to conjugate more and put sentences together properly. In my final project I think my pronunciation and verbs were used correctly that was the most important thing to me. My design being okay was a bonus.
If I could do this project differently I would get better pictures and have words on my imovie. I wouldn't change anything I did in my process I followed and did everything I had to do.
I think this project was okay. I feel like since we had so much other work it took away from me enjoying it and having a different final project.

Toni M. See through a person's words Q2

Posted by Toni Marshall in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:38 am
Throughout the second quarter I spent most of my time cutting out the stencil for my project I have about two left. My plans are to spray paint the poem onto the windows. The project is very time consuming and difficult. Letters such as O,R,A and G's were the hardest letters to cut out because in order to preserve the actual shape of the letter you must cut out little rectangles that connected the rest of the paper and the middle space of the letter and cut around it. I had many trails trying to get the correct grove on how to cut neat and with accuracy.

There were 15 sheets each containing about 25 letters. By the 3 quarter I expect to be finished this project. I am trying to now figure out a way to preserve the paper just in case I mess up the first trail of spray painting because like Mrs.Hull says" We se you up to fail." I will reflect on what i need to do in order to improve my work and hopefully create a project I am more proud of than now.

Language Autobiography

Posted by Toni Marshall in English 2 - Block on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 12:32 pm

“The heart only speaks coded language when the spirit forgets who it was born to be!” Greg Corbin

In my life language is an art form that I use to communicate with other people. I am like broken glass; every word I speak is about individuality. In my family the way we communicate with each other is important. When I’m with my friends, who are hearing impaired, we create conversations with our hands. When I am around poets we speak in metaphors people may never understand.

“Get Free! On the line. Go in Toni!”  Silence. The moment when the silence takes over and all you can hear is the butterflies, flapping in your stomach. I close my eyes and step to the microphone. I picture all the words in my head like a broken VCR tape that just won’t play the right scene. I breathe an unsteady heartbeat that comes out my throat. “I know a girl who once made phantom memories and turned them into figurines babies she was meant to have.” I expected some snaps for that line. That one line played in my head for weeks. It wasn’t worth it. I continued my poem. People just stared at me as if what I was saying wasn’t worthy enough to be on spoken stage. I forgot my poem my VCR of a brain stopped working all together. I backed up as if I would run off the stage and never touch a microphone again. I walked back up to it and in very exhausted tone said “there is always a clamp disguised as snake ready to bite and tear that egg out you.” Usually when a person messes up and forgets their lines the audience would snap and encourage you. Everyone just stared at me and waited. They expected something to come from me, some type of miracle. After my poem my mentor came up to me and said in a very nonchalant voice “You did good, your performance could’ve been better. You need to work on delivery.” I accepted the advice and said very robotically “Thank you.”  My friend, who is also a poet, came up to me with disappointment stitched in her smile and exclaimed “The reason why people didn’t like your poem was because you don’t sound like everyone else. You don’t write like everyone else.”

When I feel like something gets stuck in my throat such as my feelings, I go missing. As a result of me not knowing my voice in poetry and my purpose as a writer I decided not to go to slams or show up for any events. When I do not fit in because of my language or cultural background I tend to distance myself because I am uncomfortable. I feel as if, if I am not like everyone else I do not fit in. There is a certain standard I must live up to in order for myself to be comfortable in the skin I am wrapped in. When I don’t know a language it makes it harder for me to trust what people might think and do to me. Every time I think of speech and language it reminds me of a poem that stated, “language is leverage boasting on the teeth of a lightning bolt all spiteful and screen splitting.” People tend to take advantage of the ways they are different from you. There are constant reminders all around us from places such as the media, family, and everyday activities. The idea of language plays hide and go seek with acceptance.

“Everyone must sit with someone not from your running group.” An unfamiliar voice shouted out. I was extremely nervous; this was my first time at running camp. I walked over to the nearest table where a guy with hazel-brown eyes like the forest's floor stared at me. Without a word he moved over and watched me as I took my seat. I turned and looked at him and very politely said, “Hi, my name is Toni.” He turned around very quickly and began to scramble around. I could tell he was looking for something. I figured it was his identity because he couldn’t tell me his name, I thought that was rude. He turned around and had napkins and a pen; he wrote, “Hi my name is Hiram, nice to meet you.” I wrote back and said, “Why aren’t you talking to me?” He giggled and quickly wrote back “I’m deaf, I can’t hear sorry.” Immediately after that I became even more nervous than before. I asked him to teach me my alphabet in sign language. He smiled and wrote back “You can’t learn it in a day!” I was very determined because I didn’t want to miss out on a wonderful person because of language barriers. I wrote back and showed him I was excited and wrote, ” I can learn in a night.” We sat there at the dinner table and went over the letters more than thirty times each. Each time I messed up he would look at me with those eyes and paint me a picture of patience and appreciation. I finger spelled to him about 2 hours later and said “I told you I can learn in a night, thank you for teaching me.” He signed back but I have no Idea what he said, all I could recognize what the letters “Goo- Ht” I assumed he said “goodnight.”

I became about seventy- five percent fluent in six months. Although now I am fluent in sign language I still become very nervous and self-conscious around hearing impaired people because I am not deaf. I even use a translators sometimes, making conversations with your hands isn’t easy. Your facial expressions are important and valued. I think I am more comfortable with sign language because they cannot hear my insecurities in my voice, the scratchy tones of regret for starting the conversation in the first place. But hearing impaired people seem to be more grateful because a lot of people in the world do not use sign language. Yet I still have doubts and internal issues because of acceptance of not being them. Sometimes I wish I could switch my disadvantages on like water from the faucet and let it pour through my fingers to guide me. I think I need guidance in order to understand I can’t learn every language and people might not judge me because of it. And again language is equivalent to acceptance.

There are some people who actually appreciate it, when you take the time and effort to learn and embrace their culture. In many of the cases I have experienced people have treated me differently from my perspective but maybe I am just paranoid. I am still trying to find my identity in the world. Acceptance is the key to happiness and appreciation for one’s self, if I do not know a language I will not be happy and therefore I won’t be accepted.

My definition of what language is has changed dramatically. Language is a reminder of how I will never be what the people around me are, no matter how hard I try. I tend to find myself depending on a translator for confront. Maybe one day I’ll over come that internal conflict I have within myself. That Venus flytrap stuck between my throat making it hard to breathe and speak when I come around people that are not like me. I must remember "Word are more powerful than a gun. Watch what you say. Watch what ammunition lies under your tongue and inside the clip of your soul. It can either heal or kill" (Greg Corbin) My spirit is killed when I feel the lack of identity because of language, standards, and my art form. I must accept that language is like broken glass it’s all about individuality.

"We allow our ignorance to prevail upon us and make us think we can survive alone...alone in patches, alone in groups, alone in races, even alone in genders."
-Maya Angelou

“Get free, Ashe, Humans aren’t built in silence.”

Those are the thoughts that run through my mind every time I a,,m about to do a poem. Regardless if I am in my room, a slam, or the middle of the school hallway. All those thoughts set me up for how well I perform. Before any one does a poem if you are from Philadelphia you take your shoes off, contemplate your words, visualize whatever you are talking about and know your truth. I was told by my mentor the first time he saw me say a poem he asked “what’s your purpose queen?” I didn’t know the answer so I just shrugged my shoulders and said “I have no idea.” Then he just walked away. I felt ignorant and fake. Later that night he called me and said, “know a writers purpose, our purpose is to save lives.” I didn’t understand when he explained it to me, he said that “you never know if someone in the audience is beating there wife or the women who is getting beating is in the audience, your poem could be the thing that gives the women the courage to walk away, or the man beating his wife the strength to stop hitting her. We save lives.” I never thought of poetry that way, I always fell into the clichés of what it was, such as every poem has to be about love or poetry is only used for you.

Before a slam you have a meditation stage where you imagine whatever it is that you’re writing about, next you “black” which is when you have an outer body experience. And “get free.” I remember semi finals to be on Philadelphia’s slam team. There were three rounds which consisted of a haiku, a 90 second poem and a three minutes and forty second poem. . My first poem was a short haiku about beauty. My second poem, which was the 90 seconds one, was about how poetry means to save a life. My final poem was about a little girl sleeping with many men to find herself and shadow her beauty with makeup. My strongest and most moving part I blacked on was “But occasionally she needed to feel loved like a “dime” ...with all that makeup she was to blind to see that  if she peeped behind the blinds she would see the world is so much prettier  than a wet hole and a long pole trying sink through it.”  I didn’t make the team but I did have the opportunity to travel to LA with the them and I was the youngest who lost by a couple decimal points. The experience was very humbling and helpful. It is true that “humans aren’t built in silence”

But actions, Our actions as poets help shape the world. They also help other point of view be shown across peacefully. The thing poets do a lot are hide behind figurative language as if we are trapped between a mask and morals.  Visualizing a change happening before your words are resurrection-taking place in your lungs. Where invisible

possibilities become legendary.  Poets make movements come true and makes acceptance easier.

Poets are created solely to make a change through words instead of violence and protest, instead we make testimonies to ourselves and others.  People in the world usually think they understand the general idea of things such as metaphors, they can be interpreted a lot of different ways. But there is always someone’s truth behind it.  Through writing and whatever we do in life. Every step we take is art, we loose a piece of ourselves everyday and gain something better back.  When I look back I realize everything I’ve been through in my writing only made me better, as a poet, a person, and a lifesaver. “I am Samurai and Avatar a whole Public Service Announcement for little girls and boys who are contemplating breaking their necks for the silence. Sometimes it’s safer when no one can hear you think but you.”

I think we’re waiting for a super hero to come and save us from our ignorance.

It doesn’t matter if you are creative with writing or not it is your feelings. In a general idea of life we can all make a difference we just have to be able to see things as a metaphor and view them in different perspectives. Also we need to be aware about the fact we don’t know it all there is always something different we can learn. Things we might not notice are right in front of us or where it comes from. I’m just beginning to understand where I came from. We as people are so concerned only about the things we know already and who we know. We haven’t spoken up yet heard, just listen.

"I was going to die, if not sooner then later, whether or not I had ever spoken myself. My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you. What are the words you do not yet have? What do you need to say?" - Audre Lorde

SPANISH 101

Posted by Toni Marshall in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 1:56 pm
The purpose of this project is to teach Noah, a friend of Srta. G.'s, how to speak Spanish using different verb tenses such as the present tense and preterite tense. After watching our tutorial, Noah should be able to greet people and speak in the correct tenses.

The only questions I have for Noah are...
  • Do you like Spain so far?
  • Do you think our video helped you at all?
  • How is it being emerged in Spanish and not know any of it, does it make it easier to pick up on?

Toni marshall Making period 1

Posted by Toni Marshall in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 11:07 am
This marking period, I had difficulties trying to grasp a idea that my heart was into. First I decided to make a art project that was very abstract, using recycled glass, bottles, and other materials that would usually land into a landfill. That project wasn't a fail but it wasn't heartfelt. So I decided to do something that I do best, poetry. Every time I write a poem a truth bleeds out. In order for this project to be advertised and different I've decided to spray paint it on the windows in the art studio. I currently don't have any images of what this project will look like. It takes many steps and hard work to complete it. I had to measure the windows, figurre out the font size, and cut out my stencils for the spray paint. I have a sample of what the poem is: "

If it isn’t the latest fashion trend we won’t allow the human species to be recycled,

Our hearts to be reused, more like thrown in a landfill because you can’t be saved here,

No matter how many shirts we decide to wear that claim we are going green, we don’t change we are selfish

Wrapped up in a diabetic tornado, it isn’t sweet here. We’re dying."- Toni Marshall

This quarter in art, hearts will change and beat a different tune, we are getting in touch with ourselves.
