Pop-up Protest Book Q4 Benchmark

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Storytelling - Rami on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 7:21 pm
I wanted to put the audience into the protest and the best way was to make a pop-up book. I decided to make the background blue, so it would not distract the view from the pop up art. These pictures are from the protest in Philadelphia,PA. The protest was outside of the School District of Philadelphia about the education budget cuts. I wanted to document the event because it is a moment that needs to be remembered. The background pictures of the buildings was to remind you that it is the city, The reason why the picture has city hall in the distance was to represent how from justice and fairness the situation was. The poster "Unite Here" is written in larger letters because I wanted to show the viewer that people are united and passionate in what they fight for.

Water Pump Design Capstone

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Capstone - Dunda on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 10:51 pm
Abstract

For my capstone I want to redesign the UNICF water pumps that are used in developing countries such as Malawi, Africa. These water pumps are miles away from some families, they are fragile, and they do not provide enough water for all the work that is being put in to pump it. I want to design sturdier and easier to use pumps that will be closer to the families. The reason why I am passionate about this project is from my personal experience in Africa using the pumps. While I was there the pump broke and it took a few minutes to pump a bucket of water. The most horrifying part was that my family was a 45-minute walk from the water pump and some families were even farther.  Water is a pivotal aspect to life and should be easy to access. By producing and perhaps designing a functional water pump, I think that it will show my research and knowledge of engineering. This capstone will also show my growth in building and critical thinking skills.

The design I had in mind for my capstone was to design water pumps that have multiple purposes and I ened up with a pump that is similar to a soccer goal. When the ball hits the panels it will generate energy and power a piston. That piston will bring up ground water, that will be drinkable due to the ceramic filtering. I have the complete design on google sketch up ( with the link to dropbox is below).

La Bailarina en Cabeza de Muerte por Salvador Dalí

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at 12:31 pm

Favorite spot:  Clark Park
Neighborhood: University City
Address: 42nd Baltimore

I am: A Philadelphia high school senior, and a runner, a volunteer and a aspiring doctor.
Years in Philly: 18
Current Home: University City

Dear Clark Park,

I do not like you. I do not like any of your local summer events that I greatly anticipate during the tedious winters. I do not like attending everyone of your monthly flee markets with my best friend. I defiantly do not like getting awesome novelty items such as an accordion or locally made jewelry for amazing prices. I do not enjoy watching the  free Shakespeare theatrical productions every year with my mother, which I want to add is well put together and humorous. I do not like snow days because I always have the best time going sledding down the massive hill at the bowl. I did not enjoy spending hours playing hiding-go-seek and giggling with my middle school friends. Most of all I dislike all the unforgettable memories that I had with you. I can not simply like you, I love everything about you. Thank you Clark Park for the best eight years of my life!

With love,
Amanda

Mar Adentro: Los Complicados de la Vida

Posted by Amanda Millatt on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 6:59 pm

Scarlet Letter and Juno Creative Piece amillatt

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Sexuality and Society in Literature - Dunn on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 12:20 am

The themes I emphasized in my project were societal judgment and public vs private. I basically created a blanket, one side represents the negative thoughts of society about Juno and Hester and the other side represents each characters positive qualities. My idea for this piece was to show how society can sometimes cover up a persons inner good with their harsh words and actions. I tried to make the design speak for itself and not have to write anything more than adjectives. On the societal judgment side, I made the background black and I put a large scarlet letter in the middle. The adjectives are written in black and red sharpie and in capital letters. The reason for the black background and the black and red sharpie is that this side is the darker side of society, the more harsh and cruel side.  I wanted to write the words in capital letters because I feel like society is yelling it at these two girls or making it so obvious about the two characters decision that it is like yelling. Lastly I created the scarlet letter to represent that side because society judged the physical aspects of each character (Hester the Scarlet Letter and Juno the baby bump). Some of the words used on the blanket were “ Hussy, Harlot, Immature, whore and irresponsible.”  because people in both the book and movie associated the characters and real people in their situations with these words.

For the other side of the blanket, I took a completely different approach. I decided that I wanted this side to show the great quality that each character has on the inside. I made the background bright yellow and the words are written in different colors because I wanted the audience to see the positives and know that this side represent the good. I created a heart and sewed that in the center of the project because the heart represents something that is covered, but still the most important part of you. Those aspects of the characters are covered or ignored by society because of their situation, but they are still important. Some the words I decided to use were “caring, passionate, wise and forgiving” because I thought these words were applicable to Juno and Hester.

The first step was o go to the thrift store and by all the components: blanket, yellow sheet, white sheet, red fabric, shapies etc. Then I came up with the words I wanted to use by looking at my notes from the Scarlet Letter and Juno.  After that I cut out pieces like the heart and “A”. Lastly I sewed everything myself on the blanket. The project took about 7 hours in total to complete because it did take a while to sew on the A and the heart. The only issue that I had was sewing because I hadn’t sewed something so large since I was 10 years old. My fingers were also soar after hold the needle for such a long period of time.

The part of the project I feel that I did well on was the idea behind the project. I thought that it was different from the projects that we did in class and the ones that my peers were creating. I wanted to make my project different, which I did. The only aspect I want to improve on it the aesthetic part. I imaged it would look ten times better in my head, I felt like if I had another week I could have spent more time perfecting the minor errors. I am not saying I hate my blanket, but there are some parts that I wish I could have fixed.

If I had to do this exact project again I would have changed a few parts of the original design. First off I would have made the blanket longer so that I would fit more words on it. I would have also added some pictures from the movie and some cartoons of the book because I feel like it would have added something different to my project. Lastly I would have added more detail, like have a colored border around the words because that would have made it more visually appealing. To conclude I enjoyed working with both Juno and the Scarlet Letter, they are both timeless pieces that I teach our generation a lot.

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 10:06 am

The PATRIOT Act Editorial

Posted by Amanda Millatt in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 9:04 pm
The USA PATRIOT Act is certainly not flawless, but has been a successful process for preventing terrorism and other criminal activity. According to the Heritage Foundation since 9/11 30 terrorist plots were foiled including the shoe bomer and the underwear bomber. Anyone of those 30 terrorist plots could have caused mass hysteria similar to the 9/11 attacks, however with the help of the Patriots act these plots were nothing more than nefarious ideas.
It can be argued that out of thousands of people under investigation only a small percent are actual terrorist, but these investigations could help stop other crimes.  According to the "Surveillance Under The Patriot Act"  info graphic of the 3,970 sneak and peeks  peeks (secret searches of Americans' homes and offices) in 2010,  76 percent were drug related and less than 1 percent were terrorism related. These sneak and  peeks did find about 3 people who could be involved in terrorism plots, but even better the sneak and  peeks found a considerable amount of drug crimes. Meaning the Patriot Act could also decrease blue collar crimes like drug dealing.
The Patriot Act can not find every terrorist in existence, but it has increased the probability  that America does find a terrorist. America could be considered safe since the Act and will only remain safe with the the Patriot Act  being enforced.

Enemy of the State

Posted by Amanda Millatt in American Government - Herman on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 9:28 pm
In the film Enemy of the State the government was portrayed as nefarious, corrupt and just plain old evil. They would stop at nothing to clear their own names and get their way, like destroy innocents peoples reputation/life and even murder. This is horrifying to think that taxpayers money is going to personal problems and not towards actual crime or education.

In the movie nothing was off limits regarding privacy, for example they put trackers on Will Smith and even vandalized him house to cover up their tracks. Also in the movie they put cameras everywhere in his house and sat outside of his house keep in mid that none of this was with permission or notice. In the movie respecting privacy was basically unknown, which is a little terrifying.

It is difficult to say how much information the government should know about me, but i know it should never go to the extremes of this movie. I feel like it should not be that easy to run a whole investigation on someone, like they did to Will Smith. I feel that the government should have the abilities to use this technology on criminals, but the only way to get hold of this technology should be by a step by step basis. I feel that the person they are following should be yelling terrorist threats/ plans before they can totally invade and incriminate someone.

I don't feel that safety should be a factor for restricting rights, but if it must I would rather have freedom of speech than be safe. I should not have to be limited in my freedom of speech or freedom to practice religion, everyone deserves the right to express and feel the way they want as long as it does not hurt anyone. Their will always be violence and unsafe times, but life isn't worth living if you're voice was never heard.

The point of divergence  was when Ronald Reagan was nearly assassinated on March 30th, 1981. He was shot in the lung right outside of the Washington DC Hilton hotel by John Hinkley. I changed this event and made the shot fatal (in the original event was inches away from his heart) and Reagan dies after surgery. The future I imagined was a bright one, Reagan ruined America's economy because of his famous "Reaganimics" plan that only benefited cooperations( the rich). I believed that George H W Bush wouldn't have choose the same plan, but would have just raised taxes. In the future since George W Bush is never elected we don't go to war with Iraq, which only helped our economy. For 2012 the economy is stable and prosperous. The education system is incredible because America did have a surplus of money to give towards education. The only problem in America is the amount of homeless families that has continuously grew because funding for welfare is modicum and very selective.

I enjoyed learning about the Reagan policies because I didn't realize his presidency was so pivotal in American history. He changed a lot about the economy and foreign relationships. I thought the most challenging part was deciding how to present the project because their was just so many ways to do it. I also thought just thinking about a different future was difficult. I thought that researching how each individual event and person affected another event that would ultimately change the future was extremely interesting.

I felt that any change will effect the future , even if it is just a small impact or huge. For example if  the systematic change was that "Reaganomics" never happened, our economy would not end up in debt. I felt the same way about individual change because as I showed in my benchmark with the absents of Reagan our future was completely different. Well one decision can change everything, for example Bush made the decision to fight a war, which hurt our economy. If Bush would have made a different decision than perhaps Americas finanical situation would be completely different.

I thought that if i had a timeline in my project that would help with describing the future. I tried to include some of the history in my magazine like I would specify which president helped that event happen. The timeline would have just added that extra bit of understanding. If i had to do my project over again I would have done way more research and started it earlier, not to say I didn't spend hours just reading about the history, but I also feel like I missed some important events. If I would have started just a week earlier then I would have had more time to do research and create the best project.

Time Magazine benchmark.

Blog Post 5- Education and everything eles

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 9:33 pm
Hey this is my last bog post! This blog post was supposed to be completely dedicated to education in spain, but the conversations did turn out to be exactly like that. The two people I interviewed were Drake from Colombia and Mariano from Argentina. They were both studying to get a degree in business just in two different ways.

Some Vocabulary-

Secondaria- High school
celoso-jealous
technio-technical school

aprendar- to learn
negocio- business
¿tu eres estudiantes de universidad?- Are you a student of a university?
Barato- inexpensive
pediatra-pediatrician

colegio- college

From these conversations I did learn a lot about education. I learned that Drake goes to a technical school that only last 1 year. I also learned that Argentina has a similar school system as ours, they go to school till they are 18 years old. College is also 4 years in Argentina and according to Mariano it isn't that hard to get accepted into.  You can learn more by reading the chats I posted.

Internet Source

From the internet source I found that  public schools in Argentina  are free and similar to America kids have to go to school when they are 6. Also school is only 4 hours a day there and they attend secondary school for 5 years.

Blogpost 4- Breaking up

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 12:35 am
Since last week I talked about marriage in Spain, now I will explore breakups. It was difficult explaining to people my topic because they all thought that I was asking them for a relationship. I did find two willing participants, one was Sandra maria from Columbia and Pablo from Chile. From these conversations I learned that men say in Chile "Terminamos porque no quiero hacerte" which means We are finished because  I don't want to hurt you. Another phrase that men say is "Quiero terminar contigo porque ahora te quiero como amiga", which means I want to terminate with you because right now i want to be friends. For women they say "Terminamos porque no quiero mas engaños" which means we are breaking up because you lie a lot. I thought the differences in reasons were interesting or perhaps Pablo experiences this a lot.

I also learned that people typically date a lot before getting married. Also to get divorced it is very expensive, but it is not difficult to get one. If you want to know about Pablo or Sandra or even see what eles they said the conversation is below. Muchos Gracias!

Blog Post 3: Matrimonio

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Last week was about understanding dating in Spanish speaking countries and now it is all about marriage. This week I talked to a 35 year old teacher from Colombia who was very willing to talk to me about marriage. To help understand my conversation, there are a list of vocabulary below.

Vocabulary

Casamiento/Matrimonio - marriage

Pareja- partner/ pair

Vigencia- validity

Cédula-  identity card

Juzgado- court

Reclamar- to claim

llenar- to fill out

Coincidir- to coincide

Catolicos- Catholic

Pedir- to ask

Vendidas- sold

Tribu- tribe

Entregado- Selfless

Marido- husband

Summary

If the conversation was to difficult to understand I can give a quick summary.

  • Marriage in Columbia is just like marriage in the United States
  •  Some people never get married, but do live together or civil unions
  • They have reception type dinners where the whole family come together
  • They have to get everything approved by the courts
  •  In some indigenous tribes they have a form of arranged marriage; they sell the women.

Blog Post 2: The Dating Scene.

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 9:42 am
In America there are different ways to ask a person out on a date or flirt. I have talked to both Seniorita G and Bridgette from Peru.  Last week I posted about how to greet people of different ages. Now we can move on to dating.
While talking to Bridgette I learned that
1."Entonces los caballeros son de ofrecer pequeños detalles como flores, o son de crear poemas... ellos son mas romanticos" translated to english she said that "they give flowers and write poems, which is romantic"
2. "Estas rica"- is a phrase that means like common sense.
3." y son palabras que te lo gritan en la calle y incomodan bastante" - Sometimes they yell words across the street and that is quite uncomfortable.
While talking to Senorita G

She conformed that mean are poetic and gave some great piropos (flirting) in spanish.

E3.Q4.2012_Conversation Proyecto: Understanding Spanish Phrase Usage

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 9:46 pm
This first blog post is about greetings because it is difficult to start a conversation without one. Of course there are many ways to say basically the same thing, but you would not address your mother the same way you would address your friend. Below is a list of common spanish greetings and their translation in english.

Slang (to friends, people your age)

1. "¿Que Tal" -Whats up?

2. "¿Dos como and as?"- How is it going?

3."¿Que pass?"- Whats up?

Respectful way (elder, parents, respected figure)

1."Hola ¿Como estad usted?"- Hi, how are you?

Bonus

If you really want to impress someone with your spanish you could say this next phrase after they respond.

"Mucho gusto"- Nice to meet you.

The next blog post will be about questions that follow the greetings and how the phrases change depending on who you're talking to.

PCB Info Graphic Reflection Amillatt Jhinton Mmarant

Posted by Amanda Millatt in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 1:18 pm
I feel that our research went well and so did our decision making. We knew what we wanted on the info graph  and we knew how to represent the information. We never argued and we all contributed. Some contributed more than others, but we all did something. Our procrastination wasn't so good. We were distracted at times and that prevented us to get our work done earlier. Also my computer was slow and took forever to put the graphic together. I would add more information and more information about PCB. I feel that we didn't have much about the history on Monsanto. We could have also incorporated more real life photos.

Be Concise

We tried not to use a lot of words. We wanted to use more pictures to describe what was happening. We hoped that people would understand it with a quick glance.

Be Visual

We had a lot of pictures that told their own story. We do have some sentences, but we just tried to use phrases.  We picked a theme and colors, that we tried to keep consistant through out the graphic.

Be Smarter

I thought that our graphic was clever and well represented. I don't think it is perfect, but it is good.

Be Transparent

Our graphic was a little not clear at times and if i didn't make it, I might not understand what was going on.

Be Different

Our graphic has a different theme than others. We used used blue throughout. We tried to have the least amount of words and others had a lot.

Be Accurate

We did tons of research and tried not to use any sources that looked unreliable.

Be Attractive

I feel that it is well organized and the color makes it appealing to the eyes. It might be a bit crowded, but I think it looks fine.

Be Varied

We used a variation of ways to display the data, like we tried to tell a story with the fish and showing a scale with the randrops.

Be Creative

We used tons of pictures and used different ways to display the data. I thought that we were creative    with the way we approached the assignment.

E3.U4: Las Relaciones Personales BM

Posted by Amanda Millatt in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 10:18 pm
The assignment was to create radio or TV show about a troubled  relationship and get advice on how to fix it. Each person had to write their own script which have to have 10 vocabulary words, 3 Ser verbs, 3 estar and 3 subjunctives. Our group decided to do a radio show because of the amount of time we had. We thought that filming would be difficult to plan and not enough class time. Well I thought that i had a chance to actually use the vocabulary, which i had trouble applying to class discussions. I also understand the uses of estar and ser way better because we had it on the google doc and when people edited my work they would point out the verb mistake. I currently have a better understanding of the topics that needed to be covered in the Benchmark. I felt that this benchmark was helpful for my understanding of this unit. I felt that our final product was good, but it could have been better. We should have had a surprise twist like my boyfriend was really my brother. I wish it could have been more over the top and ridiculously funny. I would have also changed te fact that we did a radio show. I would do a TV show because it can be more dramatic and just funny if done correctly, I felt it was difficult making our dialogue funny. Also on a TV show we could completely change our appearance which would help with creating a new persona. I would have basically the same plot because i thought it was sort of interesting. To conclude I enjoyed this project and hope to see more projects similar to this one.

Jessica and I choose to do our project by hand because we were inspired to do a sort of colleague. We wanted the piece to visual, thats why the pictures and cartoons are on there. To not have people completely lost we had a word diagram that illustrated the most common words spoken throughout the unit.

Our EQ was: What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

Our piece showed the accomplishments of all the presidents because they are individuals who created change. We were thinking their roles were important in shaping the foundations of America. These presidents were persistant in what they believed in, which helped them sustain change.

"My People" Sci-Fi Short Story amillatt

Posted by Amanda Millatt in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 12:02 pm

The smell of body odor and pungent deodorant consumed the dry forest air. Before thoughts could come to my mind I see her. From the height of this tree, the frail girl resembles Lily. On the tips of my toes, I  cautiously move to the edge of the enormous branch, until I can get the perfect view of her. I am wrong.  Still about 100 feet off the ground, I gaze at her innocent, sky blue eyes. These eyes seemed to hit the sun at the perfect moment, as if she planned it. Her eyes wandered around, scanning every inch of her surroundings. Her eyes slowly crept up to my location, and I lowered my body until my camouflage jumpsuit was practically conjoined to the branch. This human girl is either maniacal or doesn’t have any sense of direction. If my civilization knew she was in this close of a proximity to our refuge the situation it could mean disaster. I have to save her, she will be killed in seconds if she moves anymore. There are  no more than 100 hundred if my kind , that is why we have an electric force field that bubbles around our land, only our blood can pierce the strong current. I pop my head back up and study her shimmering pink dress, why would you wear that hideous creation? She appears harmless, but with the increasing numbers of disappearances of my people I should make a more judicious decision.  I pull my body up swiftly and leap downwards barley touching the branchs . A few seconds later my right foot collides with the ground , eye to eye with the now frightened girl. I get a closer look at the features of her face, 11 or 12... my age. Following the sharp pains in my neck, a grin erupts on her face. My vision becomes unclear, the dark brown tree trunk and her straight blonde hair swirl together. I fall to the ground, paralyzed, numb.

“This one is tiny compared to the rest, she will be worth about a thousand. We did it again.”a possible mans voice, fighting back is pointless. A trap is the only thought that I could form.. a trap...

My eye lid swiftly spread apart, the throbbing of my head overpowers my thoughts. I lift my upper body up and lift my hand up to try to comfort my forehead. My hands reach about two inches before they are shocked. A force cuff, is restricting my hand to this icy metal table. I am dressed in a thin hospital gown that stop a little pass my knees. Dejva strikes me, I see the fire. The four story white building was burning and then I turned around to the  naked crowd running into the pitch black woods. Then another image of me looking through a greenish fluid that my body is submerged in. I see a human striking a scientist, knocking him down. The scienctist  does not move,he just lies stiff in the corner of room. A deep males voice drags me back to reality, our eyes meet and then part just as fast.

“How much fluid will be obtain from this creature, Peter?” He questioned the nervous man beside him, holding a clipboard.

“The creature is a female and the smallest I’ve seen of her kind. She must have been one of the last ones created.” He says in confidence. Peter is correct right that night when it happened was when a considerable duplicates of me were being produced. I am nothing more than an experiment. My kind is designed to hold the cure for cancer, but I am the only one who was perfected. The others only show a glimpse of the actual cure, but are still valuable to the humans.  An obnoxious beep interrupts my thoughts. Then Peter rushes to the computer set up on the other side of the room. He takes one look and then yells out.

“Sir, we found it” turning towards the older man with a deep voice, confused by the information he rushes next to him. The wrinkles around Sir’s month scrunch together to form a smile. Then walks back to my metal table, fear tightens my every muscle in my body. As if it matters because the force cuffs cover both my feet and hands, trying to move would be painful and useless.

“So your the creature that my boss has been hassling me for and now your here. This should ensure that I am promoted” then turns to Peter “ I want every part of it’s body separated  and sent straight to the lab. This cure will bring in millions” Sir said with excitement. “...and save millions of people.” he added on uninterestedly. Instead of being disturbed by the thought of being ripped apart limb by limb, I drifted away. I thought of my human friend Lily , whose parents helped my people escape from the fire. The family is made up of 3 people, one man who teaches my people who to constructed the force field, a women who teaches us and a brown hair girl who I grew up with. Those are the only humans I was supposed to trust and I did. Until they were banished after my people started to disappear, but I was certain it couldn’t have been them. I never got to officially say goodbye to Lily, so that is why I was in the forest. I went up in the tree, for a better view.

“This might hurt a little.” Peter states as he sticks a needle  straight into my green vain .

“Why did you destroy our building?” I  asked because I was never told about that day, I just have flashbacks. He looked at me with a mixture of shock and confusion. I understand his confusion because my kind aren’t supposed to under any circumstances speak to humans. My people are worried about our location being revealed, so that became a rule. After a few moments he responded.

“I didn’t do anything, religious extremist despised your creation. They said that the whole experiment was funded by the devil. The exact day that the scientist discovered that you were the cure, the extremist had already started to over take the laboratory. They set the whole place on fire by night. Their were going to be thousands just like you, who would have changed lives and science...”He trailed off. The needle had vanish from my arm.  He must have lost someone close to cancer. Lily told me that scientist were desperate for a cure because 70 percent of the humans had developed some form of cancer. I can’t help but blame myself for those deaths. Then I remember how they inhumanly experiment on my people, they rip them apart  and test pestilent chemicals on them. I sympathize the emotional and physical pain from both side. I stare at Peter as he  pulls a white mask over his mouth and picks up one knife from a set of about 10.  He cuts a square through my dress over my stomach. Then slowly pierces my thin layer of skin. I look straight at him the whole time, the pain is unbearable  after Peter starts trying to cut through tissue. I start to loose conciseness, but I am satisfied. My people will no longer be hunted or brutally tortured. Now my people can thrive as a  peaceful civilization and hopefully Lily and her family will return. I wish i would have got that goodbye, then my berating stops. My eye fling open an then darkness, complete darkness...

  • How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
Well we waited until we were together in class and then we split up. We worked on our parts separately, but  we did come together when we had to review our stuff.
  • 11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?
It is there role to vote and that helps create change because they are picking the future and how it will change good or bad.
  • How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
Well i didn't know anything about the election because it didn't really apply to me. I found it interesting that hardly anyone votes and that it is actually difficult to vote.
  • How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
Well we wanted to make it appealing to everyone. Like we made a song that would appeal to the younger voters and then the print ad was more serious and that was supposed to appeal to the older voters.

Well i changed my Facebook to spanish and it was interesting . I thought it was better that i already knew what was supposed to be their so i learned some new word. For example conectados/connect ,mensaje/messages and others. Also i learned that most the options aren't congregated. I might actually keep it like this and hopefully learn more words .

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

Immigration graph on Prezi

Immigration Link

The data set wasn't really surprising in the 19 hundreds because i already knew the major events that would push and pull people from immigrating. I would say that my time period 1820 -1880  i didn't know much , except like the civil war . It was quite interesting to find out how many epidemics happen and wars happened that America had no part in . I feel as though immigration will actually decrease because we don't really have much to offer anyone who does immigrate . Our economy is terrible , 14 million people are unemployed. I wouldn't come into such a quagmire , it could get better in the next 20 years but it could worsen .
At first my group was going to do a story book , but then you clarified specially what you were looking for and the story book wasn't the right way to go . It had too many words and not enough visual. Then we decided to do a prezi because we liked the effects it offered and we had many ideas . So we decided to put our words on the immigration graph , when it is zoomed in you can see the events that lead to the amount. It was challenging to combine our work  and come up with an idea at first because jessica didn't know how to use a prezi and then we had to figure out every little detail. I would do more of a visual graph with pictures and more facts/research.

My project was an imovie. I like making the imovie because i had complete control .I was about to do a children's book , but my mother said i couldn't cut up my photos or glue it to paper. I would want to do a children's book in the future. Next time I would do a voice over instead of just putting music. I would also maybe add a video of me and described myself in more words.

Watch Your Language

“Yo. You def need to talk to him, like you obviously like him.” I said to Tsion on our usual morning trolley ride to school. We had met up at the 45th street trolley stop, and it was time for our usual girl talk. Girl talk is when we each tell everything, no holding back.

“I don’t like him!” She tried to hide her awkward smile, but I saw through her lie. We were the loudest people on the usually quiet trolley. I never realize it until all eyes are on our conversation.

“Oh my gosh, you are such a liar. I hate you and your lies.” I said to her in a serious voice. I couldn’t help but laugh after I said it. She laughed back, but her laugh said it all. It was the “Amanda you so crazy laugh”.

Then she actually said it “You are so crazy, but I do a little. I just don’t want to anymore.” I laughed at her. I hear those words everyday “Amanda you are so crazy”. I completely agree with that statement, those words not only describe my speech, but also my actions. It’s strange, but I only hear these words from my friends.

“How has your winter break been?” My Great Aunt Linda asked me when I was over her house for the traditional Christmas dinner.

“The break has been wonderful. So far, I have completed all my homework and my mother and I have watched a few movies.” I replied in a light, yet sweet voice. Then I smiled, and put on a complete “I-am-such-an-angle” act. My family always falls for it .I could also see something else in my aunt’s eyes when I talk; judgment.

“Our family looks down on us because I am a single mom. They pity us and they don’t think I raised you right. That’s just our family, get used to it.” My mom stuck this idea in my head when I was young. I grew up trying to be better than my families perception of me .I couldn’t be relaxed around them. I had to be perfect, I had to show them that my life was completely normal and that I was intelligent.

According to James Baldwin “You have confessed your parents, your youth, your school, your salary, your self-esteem, and, alas, your future.” In simpler words the way a person speaks, the vocabulary they use and the accent they have, can tell all about a person. For instance, if a person always talks with words that aren’t in the dictionary and their grammar is completely wrong, then most likely this person didn’t go to one of the best schools and probably works a minimum wage job. This could also mean that their parents didn’t push them enough or that they have too low of self-esteem to really believe in them selves.

Since I believe this quote to be true, I am afraid to use slang or just say whatever is on my mind around my family. Using slang will prove what they already think is true, that I am not educated well and that I pretty much live in poverty. My family believes that because I never went to the most expensive private schools or had a father in my life to support me. My guard always has to be up around them, I can’t just let lose and be goofy. I have to be proper and always watch what I say.

I was always the youngest in the family. The only other girl in the family near my age was about six years older than me. I was out casted because of such an age difference. My cousins didn’t want to have a deep conversation with me; I was to young too talk about anything relevant to their lives like dating or high school. I knew from a young age they didn’t want me around. I could just tell by the stares that pierced me whenever I walked into the room.

“Hello” Glenda my oldest cousin asked while going in for an awkward hug. She didn’t say it as if she cared, it was just something to say to break the tension between us.

“Hello …”I go in for the unwanted hug and then pulled away quickly. She stared at me.

“How have you been?”  I said swiftly, I wasn’t used to these word. “What’s up?” is what I say to my friends, she wasn’t my friend. She was far from one.

“Great.” Anywhere but here, it was like she was thinking out loud. Glenda walked to the other side of the room as soon as her mom peered out of the kitchen. I didn’t know what to say, it was strange because I always have something to say. I always felt this way around my mom’s half of the family.

I couldn’t help but to notice that I wasn’t myself around people I wasn’t comfortable with. With my friends I felt like I could just be myself and talk anyway I pleased. I didn’t feel the same around my family .It could be the fear of not being accepted by them or just not knowing what to say in a conversation. Whatever the reason, I can’t help but to code switch.
