Sarah Charlotte Brown: Q3 Art

Posted by Sarah-Charlotte Brown in Art Advanced - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 1:21 am

sorry the drawings are a bit orange colored... My camera was not working in the lighting well and I couldn't use a different camera. Also, I did crop them a bit on my phone, but they uploaded as the originals, so sorry if there is any black edges. Some also uploaded sideways. I don't know why that happened.

Photography was my outside project. I took many photos, and chose my favorites to edit.

Photos taken at Bard College in New York State on iPhone 4s.

Edited on photoshop CS3.

Q2

Posted by Toni Marshall in Art Advanced - Hull on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at 8:34 pm

This quarter I decided to embark in the challenge of recreating a project I attempted to complete, but never finished two years ago. The project consists of creating a poem, because I'm not the best at drawing, enlarge it then spray paint it on the windows in the classroom.

The way to do this is the following:
Create the poem
Print out the poem after you figure out the conversion from inches to points.
Then cut out each individual letter creating a stencil using a box cutter.

Ms.Hull and I then realized it would be way cooler to print out each word rather than letters and on colored paper using different fonts. I am going to try to complete this project by the end of the Third quarter, I am very excited to see the final results. Every different method we try is a learning lesson so hopefully this one is a winner. I am glad I decided to tackle this project again my senior year, it gives my class something to be proud of and remember.

Alysha's Q3 Art

Posted by Alysha Ortiz in Art Advanced - Hull on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 8:40 pm

Here are some drawings I have done for the Q3. As you can see I'm not a artists on some points but with practice i became better. You can see the difference between my first times to my later on; I learned that art is not just something you draw but more of a creative thing any eye can imagine. Heres a few drawings I was able to capture at the time the rest are in my drawing book. Enjoy " )

Q2 art

Posted by Rebecca Fenton in Art Advanced - Hull on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 12:13 pm

For this quarter I wanted to try something new. I decided to make my very own fashion design. I did not sketch it on paper, but made a keynote where I would record my bust size, waist size, etc.

Bust: 33"
Waist: 29"

I would be making a shirt, I took a course over the summer at Moore College or Art and they taught me how to make my own clothes. My first step was to the go to fabric store and pick out the type of fabric that I would like to use. I chose to make the shirt a slingy fall off the shoulder type because I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to do the measurements correctly since it was my first item of clothing that I would be trying to do all by myself, without anyone telling me what was right and what was wrong. That was the funnest thing about completing this item of clothing (although it's way too small for me) was that I was doing it all on my own. Anyway, I went to the fabric store and bought a plain black cotton fabric (which I have never worked with because it's pretty flimsy.
I came home and got to cutting. First, I traced the outline of how big around I wanted the shirt to be (I wanted it a little bit loose so I cut the shirt out 37 inches around and 7 inches down). Next, I made sure to trace where the sleeves would be.
Next, I cut the entire thing out.
Next, I went to the ironing board and folded one inch over the edge of the shirt, this is to make sure that the shirt looks clean, neat and even, meaning if I didn't cut accurately enough it would just fold over and look nice. I did this to every edge of the shirt and ironed it over to a fold. Once they were all folded over, I went to the sewing machine and sewed the places that I had just folded, (using black string). I could have done a design with the sew, but I decided to just do a straight line to be safe.
After this was done, I went to the iron once again and overlapped the two pieces (so that it looked like an entire wrap around shirt) I overlapped them and then folded them over, making sure it was on the side of the shirt so that it couldn't be seen when I wore it. I sewed the short together and put it on.
It kind of sucks, but it is still cool because it's my first ever alone piece!

3rd Quarter Art - Brownlee, Niyala

Posted by Niyala Brownlee in Art Advanced - Hull on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:19 pm

This quarter for art I had decide to make my own pieces. I had done a few different things. I had wanted to do something abstract, and a few things not. A painting and just regular pencil drawings. Also a pastel drawing. I think that I need to work on the human anatomy a lot more. I'm starting with the female anatomy. Also, I'm trying to make it so that the realistic pieces actually look realistic. i would like to work a lot more with paint, charcoals and pastels. I might try experiment with ol pastels but I don't exactly favor them. I will start (am starting) to experiment with street art. Graffiti art. Graffiti on canvas.
Painting or a sunset. Draft and Final (ish). Decided that I will continue working on it. I had wanted to paint a body of water. There are many things that i dislike about this piece, but mainly its that fact that the water looks too fake. Also the sky isn't that well done.

A pastel piece. I love working with Pastels though the thing is that I am not used to them. Also I'm not so good with them. This piece was made using a reference. (And already made picture not a real life sunset) I guess you could say that its a bit abstract but that's opinionated. There was no sketch before hand.

This was going to be a sketch of my bigger pastel piece but I had decided to make it a painting instead. The painting wasn't that good and I never took a picture of it. but this was the sketch of it. (I'd like to draw a waterfall for my next painting.)

These are just black and white pieces, both with an online reference. The second one was more a cartoonish style that the realistic(ish) first one. Though I don't think that showed too much. The first one is a human face with animalistic features. (More elf than animal ears.) The second piece is just a face.

Q1 Sugar Skull

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in Art Advanced - Hull on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 9:18 am

From what I know Sugar Skulls are a Mexican celebration.  Sugar Skulls are used for day of the dead and they are a offering to the dead. Day of the dead is a day to celebrate relatives that have passed away.

The meaning a my Sugar Skull represents me in a lot of ways. I didn't want to do a skull that was dark, I wanted to do one with a lot of bright colors and flowers. I also wanted to keep the skull basic I didn't want to make it to busy so that it was hard to look at.

For the plaster I used Jereimah's face. I started by cutting up the pieces and making sure that water I was going to use was warm. I put the vaseline on his face to make sure the the mask did dry directly on his face and it would be hard to take off. Then I started by plastering his forehead and I made by way down his face. I let that plaster dry for about 5 minutes. Then I started on the second level of the plaster. I worked from the forehead down then let that level dry for about 6 minutes. When the plaster seemed to have dried I took the mask off his face and let dry. Twos days later I was able to start painting the mask. I made sure that I had all of the primary colors so that I could mix any colors I wanted. I started by painting the top of the mask first and then I worked my way down the mask. I lastly did the mouth cause I was not sure how I wanted to paint it.

Q1 Sugar Skull

Posted by Rebecca Fenton in Art Advanced - Hull on Monday, November 26, 2012 at 11:11 am

Sugar Skulls come from Dia de Los Mertos, or "Day of the Dead." Day of the dead is a holiday that is celebrated in Central and southern Mexico where it is believed that dead children come back from the dead to spend a 24 hour time period with their families once a year on November 1st. On November 2nd is the day that older people come back form the dead to spend 24 hours with their families.  To prepare for the dead children and adults coming back from the dead on these two days, families prepare a little table filled with candy, food, water, sometimes cigarettes for adults, and more decorations. One of these finishing decorations included sugar skulls that families could purchase anywhere, or even make for themselves. I came up with my design for my mask because I went on google and looked at sugar skulls. Some were really scary so I decided to make mine with dark colors and very dramatic so that It would keep the halloweenish looking type of mask. For halloween my friend painted her face as a sugar skull and that also inspired my sugar skull. The process in which I made my mask was first I found someone who was willing to let me slob their face up! The perfect person was Jenn Wright! She was a really god sport about it. First, I lathered her face with vaseline so that her face wouldn't dry out from all the materials. First, I cut the strips to put on her face. Next, I got a tub of water, I dipped the strips in, put them on her face individually, and smoothed them out so that they would be nice and steady. I did about 3 layers of this so that I'd be sure to have a good tough mask. I had to put a straw in Jenn's mouth so she'd be able to breathe. After it dried, I started to paint the mask completely white as the base. After this, I sketched a rough draft of what I wanted on my mask. I copied it, but then ended up going into more detail once I drew it on the mask. After I was finished, I put the gloss on it so it'd be shiny and look really good.

Q1

Posted by Toni Marshall in Art Advanced - Hull on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 7:50 pm

For this quarter, I had a lot of free time to explore different things and develop new creative ideas. I had the chance to get a bit of writing done which is something I never get a chance to do anymore. I also got to make my college essay amazing and creative because of the time we had, and I think that is the greatest type of art there is.

I also got the chance to create traditional sugar mask that are apart of a Mexican tradition. I used Frankie's face to do the mold, and I painted it so it can resemble a warrior. I purposely had him keep his mouth open wide so my mask can appear to be screaming something. I painted my mask blue, red and black. I think those colors represent being bold and courageous.

Here is my mask here:
