Arshelle Johnson Capstone

During my four years of high school I have observed that not many teens are familiar with the meaning of sexual health, so I choose this topic as my Capstone. Having a Mother that has worked with sex education almost all of her working career I received  information regarding sexual health earlier than some of my peers. I wanted to look more into school based programs that inform young minds about safe sex. OIC of America offers a TPP ( Teen Pregnancy Prevention) program which is funded by the Office of Adolescent Health and the DHHS.TPP goes into different school across the Philadelphia area and teaches young people on pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) prevention. September 21-23, 2014 I attended a National Performance Measurement Conference. While attending the conference I was able to sit in on a couple of sessions, in these sessions they focused on key target populations and locating hard to find community level data. While at the conference one of the activities I participated in with the Philadelphia group were to evaluate pregnancy rates and performance measures to develop an action plan for re-application. On April 17,2015 I attended the TPP Leadership Academy. I participated in a  Pros and Cons of Sexting and Texting activity as while as team building activities. While working on my Capstone I was able to gain understanding of the TPP program while also learning what is focused on to build a program such as TPP.

Q2 Food Benchmark

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in Science and Society - Best - Y on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 1:25 pm
Tuna pasta salad

Ingredients

2 cups of whole grain pasta

1 cup of mayo

1/2 cup of mustard

4 sticks of celery

1 onion

1 teaspoon of season salt

1 teaspoon of black pepper

1 can of tuna in water

Instructions

1. Boil pasta

2. chop up celery and onion

3. open and drain can of tuna

4. mix all ingredients together

Mayo has a very high fat content so you are supposed to use it in moderation. 1 cup of mayo have 916 calories, 78.49 grams of fat, 56.16 grams of carbs and 2.12 grams of protein. I used a higher ratio of pasta to mayo so that it only lightly coated the pasta. Dijon mustard has 198 calories per cup and I only used a half of a cup of dijon mustard so its 99 calories. In a teaspoon of dijon mustard there is 4 calories, 0.19 grams of fat, 0.47 grams of carbs and 0.24 grams of protein. There is 0.17 grams of sugar in dijon mustard and as opposed to yellow mustard it is less in sugar. I used one whole onion and that had 67 calories, 0.13 grams of fat, 16.18 grams of carbs, 1.47 grams of protein. For one stalk of celery it is 6 calories I used 4 so that is 42 calories, 0.28 grams of fat, 4.76 grams of carbs, and 1.12 grams of protein. I used whole grain penne pasta and there was 1600 calories which is a huge amount, pasta is a starch so it has to be eaten in moderation. There were 12 grams of fat, 328 grams of carbs and 56 grams of protein. Pasta has a lot of carbs to it so when you start adding a bunch of other ingredients it lessens the nutritional value. The seasons that I used do not have any calories. The tuna that I used was 220 calories, 5.11 grams of fat, 0 grams of carbs and 40.63 grams of protein. I decided to use tuna because I knew that it was high in protein.

I decided to make this dish because I knew that because I wanted to make pasta an that I shouldn't use to many other ingredients. Also the ingredients that I used I did not use much of so that there was less amount of calories. Altogether my dish has 3,043 calories and there was at least 6-8 servings so that is  about 380 calories per serving which is not bad at all. My dish also had a low cost it was around $8 the most expensive item was the whole grain pasta.

Reflection

Overall I enjoyed this unit, a lot of the material that we covered I was some what familiar with. My mom is pre-diabetic and it runs in the family. So two years ago she changed the whole houses eating habitats. All of our breads  are whole grain, so is the pasta, we only eat brown rice and there is often not many baked good in the house unless they are homemade. There are so many items that are healthier but you find that they tend to cost more. During this unit when talking about nutrition I think we also needed to talk more about the price of the food. Many times people shop for quantity not quality, many people in america can not afford quality though. We need to form a better food system then we will see a decrease in obesity, heart conditions and diabetes.

Quarter 4 Arshelle Johnson

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in Art Advanced - Hull - e2 on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 10:47 pm
In the previous quarters I focused on character drawling. So this quarter I decided to change things up a little. I Still did one character drawing which was of snoopy. But I also did a figure drawling and a room in perspective. This quarter I also drew the coexist sign, which is made up of the different religions and sex symbols. This is the drawling that I was the most excited about doing this quarter. I also did a hand with designs on them and another design.

The drawings that I have done for this quarter are two character drawings and two forms of collages and one drawling by a master. The characters that I have drawn are Timmy Turner and Alice from Alice in Wonderland. These drawling were done in pencil sharpie and colored pencil. The two forms of collages that I have done are one on a paper and the other on my wall which I have been working on for a while. Both of these collages are made up of things that I hold important in my life.

The master drawling that I did this quarter was painted by Judith Leyster, she was born July 28, 1609 in Haarlem, Netherlands. She died February 10, 1660. This painting of a striped specimen was done in 1643. This painting was published in the Tulip from her Tulip Book, this can be found in the Frans Hal Museum, Haarlem.

Since I have taken this advance Art class before I decided to do the 4-day Art plan. This challenged me more over the quarter. I decided to draw two characters to challenge myself. I really enjoyed drawling my art work over the quarter.

The master that I copied for the Sunflower drawling was Georgia O'keeffe
. Georgia O'keeffe was born in November 15, 1887 to March 6, 1986. She was born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
She was first recognized by the New York art community in 1916. In the beginning of 1929 she was working on her drawling in New Mexico. I really liked drawling her Sunflower picture I thought it was really beautiful.

Nineteen Minutes- Book Review

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in English 3 - Rami - D on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 10:36 am
Nineteen Minutes can Last Forever

Nineteen minutes is a riveting drama written by the well known Jodi Piccoult. She is utmost known for the book My Sister’s Keeper which was turned into a movie in 2009. Jodi is acknowledged for writing books that are not only able to capture and take the readers into the lives of the characters, but also someone who writes about real world problems. She knows how to truly draw the reader in until the last page.

Jodi Lynn Piccoult is a 47 year old woman who was born May 19,1966 in Nesconset, Ny. She has written 21 books with many more to come, her first book was published in 1992 “ Songs of the Humpback Whale”. Her latest book is “ The storyteller” which was published in early 2013. She was recently named NYT bestselling author. Jodi has a very different way of writing which detaches her from the others. When she writes a book she writes in each character's point of view, you are able to understand each person's thinking. She has changed so many people's lives through her writing. She will continue to impact people with her books for many years to come.

Nineteen minutes is  a heart stopping novel about a school shooting ( that lasted nineteen minutes).“Everyone would remember Peter for 19 minutes of his life, but what about the other nine million?” asks Peter’s mother. In the first pages of the book you meet Alex the towns judge and Josie her daughter. You are introduced into the relationship that they have and how they communicate, you then learn about Peter ( the shooter). Jodi takes you in his world from his point of view. Jodi takes you into Peter’s past and lets you know why he is the way he is and what motivated him to do the shooting. From the beginning Jodi lets you know that there is more to the shooting then you think. It wasn’t just a random rampage that one boy decided to do it was a well thought out tragedy. From the beginning pages are able to see the dynamic of the relationships in this book.

The way that Jodi decided to write this book was beautiful. Since it was a book written about a shooting if it was written from Josie point of view (Victim of shooting) it would become very bias. When you write from each character’s view you are able to understand how the shooting affected each person. Jodi also writes from the past to the present. One chapter of the book may be 5 years before the shooting and then another chapter may be 1 month before the shooting. This is how she gives you background of each character and you are able to learn where they come from and why they behave the way that they do. By her doing this you don’t form judgements of the character, even though Peter Houghton shot his fellow class members you learn that the situation was much larger than life. Not that killing people was justified but you are able to understand him as a person. When Jodi wrote about the shooting in the book it wasn’t too much. I was scared when reading this book that the shooting part would be so sad. But the way she wrote was capturing. It wasn’t too graphic she drew you in so that you wanted to know what happen step by step.

There are many questions that are brought up in Nineteen minutes. Such as can someone be pushed too far? Another question that was brought up was could something have been done differently. Could his parents had listened to him when he constantly told them he was bullied. Another question that was brought up was did the students deserve to die? Should they have been punished for their wrongdoings? In addition why was peter bullied? Why him? Why was being different a death sentence? Why couldn’t he have just been Peter? In the book Jodi brings up a lot of issues when it comes to peer pressure and how it can really push someone past their breaking point.

This book for the most part exceeds my expectations. Overall it was a absolutely a well written book. But at times it moved very slowly, but that was because without the background you weren’t able to understand each character. I never lost interest in what I was reading. Every Time I picked up the book I was hooked. I wanted to read all the way through to that last page. This book really opened my eyes to how much bullying can affect someone. I thought that reading this book around the time where America is being affected by school shooting would be hard but , this book only opened my eyes to the real  world problems. It also opened my eyes to the reality that some of these people are being bullied so much that they don’t know what else to do.  Anyone who likes fiction books that deal with realistic problems should read this book. Also it is just a good read the way she develops the characters and the life portrayed in this book is amazing.

Othello Journals by- Arshelle Johnson

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11:30 am

Journal #1

Act 2, Scene 1, Page 8

IAGO

(aside) He takes her by the palm. Ay, well said, whisper! With as little a web as this will I ensnare as great a fly as Cassio. Ay, smile upon her, do, I will gyve thee in thine own courtship. You say true, 'Tis so, indeed.

- Iag0

In this scene Iago is talking to Desdemona and Cassio, they are talking about how the think women should act. They are talking about what they should and should not do. Everyone leave the scene and Iago is left on the stage and is talking to himself. He is talking about how Cassio is falling right into his plan. He is going t frame him of cheating with Desdemona.

The feeling that I get when reading this soliloquy is that Iago is trying to be quiet also very sneaking. I would use more pauses between his words to show that he is being dramatic. I would also have Iago slurring his words to show that he is trying to be quiet but also to show that he is really excited about casssio falling into his plan.

Journal #2

The secondary character that I choose from Othello is Roderigo. I picked him because he played sort of a big role in Iago's plan. Roderigo is in a lot of the earlier scenes of Othello until he is of course killed by Iago. When we first get introduced to Rodergio we learn that he is in love with Desdemona. He feels as though he will make Desdemona an honesty women out of her. He is told by Iago that he will be able to make Desdemona fall in love with him. Roderigo falls right into Iagos plan. “I tell you 'tis not very well. I will make myself known to Desdemona: if she will return me my...” In this quote Iago is talking about his love for Desdemona. Roderigo is soon killed in the Play. But throughout the play Roderigo was always able to confess his love for Desdeoma.

Journal #3

Iago Lucas Santano was born on March 12 to Lucas and Iagoana Santano. From the beginning he was a very bulky child. Some may call him pleasantly plump. Growing up his father Lucas was a evil man. He was never satisfied with what he had. He would constantly yell at his children Bill, Mary, Tom and Sue but he was especially hard on his oldest son Iago. Iago's father thought that his son wasn't had enough. Iago enjoyed dancing where as his other brothers wanted to be sword fight and get dirty like " Normal Boys". Iago was bullied by his Dad until he finally Man up and join the army. When he meant his wife Emilia he vowed that when they had children he would never become like his father. Iago and Emilia parented three children Iagoana, Lucas and Emilia. Iago became a great warrior but like he father he still carried hatred in him and always wanted more. That is when the hate started to filter with Othello. He was jealous that a Man like him could become a moor.

Journal #4

In the scene that we are doing my character is Iago. In the scene he only has a big paragraph at the end. He is talking about his plotting against Othello ( like always). When reading the line I got that he was very anxious. I decided to walk back during the scene to show that he is anxious. The prop that I am going to use is a scarf. When doing the scene I am going to throw the scarf around my neck to show my arrogance.. I think something that make our group stand out is the we have accents.

Journal #5

The scene that I had was 1b and Iago only had one line in the scene. Though it was only one line it was a very long one. “ I hate the Moor: and it is thought abroad, that ‘twixt my sheet he has done my office:....” In this paragraph Iago is talking about how he is going to break up Othello and Desdemona. Like most of his lines. Iago is a man that seems to repeat himself often. He is a very obsessive man. Once he gets an idea in his head it seems as though he can never really get it out. When reading the quote the first thing that came to my mind was that Iago was very urgent in the way he was speaking.

I feel like my group and I could have done way better. I feel as though we didn’t do as well as planned because we were missing a group member and it through us off a little. I feel like my part could have went better if I was able to connect with the audience a little more. I should have memorized my lines a little more so I could worry more about my hand movements and my facials. I am proud that everyone kept their character.

Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in Geometry - Thompson on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 4:44 pm

This project relates to the real world because when building a building you need to know all of the measurements. You have to make sure that all the math is right so that the building doesn't turn out with problems with the structure. Another way that I think this project relates back to the real world is if you want to do a job with building this is a good way to get a understanding of the math behind it. You have to know how to do proportions and measure properly.

I think the most exciting part of this project was going outside and measuring the buildings. I thought that it was very hands on. I was able to get more of an understanding of what exactly we were supposed to be done. Standing next to the building you are measuring is way different than looking at it on google earth. I say that my least favorite part was some of the math a the drawing. I say this because at times the math could be a little tricky cause you wanted to make sure you got around the same numbers for each method. Also the drawing I say this because I want things to be perfect when it comes to drawing and we only had a short time do so.

I learned how to measure buildings, I learned how to use different methods such as the mirror method and stick method. I also learned that through using google earth you can find the height of a building. To do that you move your mouse all the way to the top of the building and then you mine 16 from the height that is given. I learned that at times you may not get the same measurements as you did for one of the methods, but you just have to go back over your work and check for any mistakes that you may have made.

Racism struggles By- Arshelle Johnson

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 10:52 am

The main story of my podcast is looking into the early life of my mom and how growing up in a white neighborhood affected her. I am telling the story of how she crossed the boundary of the racism and not letting it hold her back.Everyone knows that growing up can be a struggle in it selfs. But try growing up in the 70's in a predominantly white neighboorhood. How  can someone deal with the small racist digs everyday, from not only students but teachers.

When talking to my I feel like I learned a lot about her. I have a new respect for what she went through. She crossed a lot of boundaries. She not only proved to the teacher that she could be successful in life. I am very proud of my mom getting past those boundaries.

“ Oh nice to meet you.” I say politely

“ Why you be talking like that” Shays asks

“ Like what?” I ask bewildered

“ Like, you be talking like a white person” Shay says rudely

No one has every said that to me, I don’t believe that I speak any different from anyone else. I was around the age of ten when this incident happened at summer camp. My mom sent me there because she had work during the day even though I really didn’t want to go. When I meeting this girl Shay  was probably the worst day of my life. She kept telling me that I didn’t fit in and that my voice was to different. She said I didn’t talk like a black girl. The girl Shay seemed to be the “leader” of the group of black girls so they of course they agreed with her. I had never been ignored or made fun of before because the school I went to and the people I was around spoke the same way I did. I told my mom that they were not being civil and were calling me white girl, she said it was because of ignorance and the fact that they were unaware of people that spoke in a different way. I understood what she was saying sort of, but I did not understand that I spoke a different way. I was taught to use correct words and to say please and thank you. I was taught to say yes not yea.

When I was at that age I did not know that there is a right and wrong way to speak. I just knew what I was taught. When growing and even now my parents have a mixture of friends but one thing they all have in common is that they are all educated. I guess growing up around people with a good education and a good job has rubbed off on me.

In the essay by James Baldwin called “ If Black English isn’t Language, Then Tell me What is” he talks about how black english is a language that blacks should speak. He also talks about how it is a part of the culture. He then talks about how when the slaves came over they didn’t know english so they learned from listening and they made their own words. He thinks that blacks should speak black english which in America is viewed as incorrect english. In the essay he says “ We, the blacks, are in trouble, certainly, but we are not doomed, and we are not inarticulate because we are not compelled to defend a morality that we know to a lie.” He is saying that the english language to blacks is a lie.

I do not believe in any of his views. In the world that we live in now if you do not speak the correct way you are looked down on. The black community is looked down on in a way cause people say they do not speak well. That it is to “Ghetto”. In our society getting a job can be a very hard thing to do. Employers look for a well rounded person and someone who can speak well. People make assumptions  just by the way you speak. They can tell where you are from how you grew up and your education. Baldwin writes “ It goes without saying, then that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power... It reveals the private identity.... or communal identity.” I think he is trying to say that the way you speak determines what kind of power you have in society. The people who have the higher paying jobs speak what we Americans call proper english.

In the short story “ How to Tame the Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anazaldua she says “ Chicanos and other people of color suffer economically for not acculturating” The definition of acculturating is to assimilate the cultural traits of another. This is saying that some cultures suffer because people do not understand the cultural traits of others. This can be related back to Baldwin’s essay society doesn’t understand why some blacks speak the way they do “ black english”. Society has set a standard of speaking and if someone does not speak in that way they are seen as different or wrong. In the short story “ How to Tame the Wild Tongue” the author is talking about how people don’t understand way she speaks the way she does. She talks about how people suffer because of that. The way you speak doesn’t always determine how smart you are. Every person is an image of their environment.

The way I speak has really been a big role in me becoming the person that I am. I feel as though your voice can be used as a tool to get the things you want in life. I think there is a right and wrong way to speak but only because that is what I was taught. In other neighborhoods of the city people speak differently cause that is what they were taught. I do not believe that your speech should hold you back from becoming a “Model Citizen”. Grant it when you do speak standard english in the corporate world it looks better but because you speak “wrong” shouldn’t stop you from doing want career  you want.  I feel as though you should not be labeled as uneducated by the way that you speak.

Growing up was harder for me cause when I went to middle school I ran into the same problem. Even though my middle was one of the best in the district there were still black students that did not understand why I spoke in the way I do. I got to the point where I would wake up in the morning and not want to go to school cause they would always torture me. I still did not understand why they made fun of the way people spoke.

We have been told what is the right way to speak and what the wrong way to speak is. In our society when black people do not speak in a way people think they should, it is a surprise. I guess I am the surprise, I don’t believe that I speak white because I don’t believe that you can speak white. I think there is a right way to speak english to pronounce words right and understand what you are talking about. But I don’t think that proper english belongs to just white people. Anyone can speak proper. I am comfortable with the way I am and I know that I should never change it.

Monologue- " The Pain I hide inside"

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in English 2 - Pahomov on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 9:53 am

Here he comes again. He is drunk and I’m scared. This happens every other night he will have a bad day at work come home and lose his mind in the bottle. Why did Mom have to leave us, ever since then the brown bottle is his best friend.

Mom left cause she found a new family, I guess I wasn’t good enough for her. She birthed me, she told me she loved me every night so why didn’t she stay. Her and Daddy never had problems; they  seemed in love. Now I’m stuck with a man that doesn’t understand what love is anymore. You broke him, you destroyed all his feelings. Did you every think that leaving us would have such an effect

“ Come over here” My dad says in his drunk voice. “ What?” I say calmly.

I know what he wants, he wants me to do something for him. Probably wants me to make him something to eat, and if I say no he is going to beat me, if I don’t make his food right he is going to beat me.

Maybe I should just run away and leave this place. I’m not loved here I’m not wanted. I'm just his servant. I'm his pillow he comes to me when he is too far down in the brown bottle and has anger he needs to get out. The anger about how his job gives him too many hours and not enough pay. How he will never find anyone that will love him as much as Mom did when they first got together. By why take your anger out on me, what did I ever do. You say that Mom and you never had problems till I was born. Maybe but I never wanted to bring problems, I wanted my parents to stay together forever. That is what their vows said. Mom promised to stay together with us forever. She said that we were the perfect family. I guess she lied she didn’t love me enough. I wasn’t enough to keep her happy.

Sometimes I just want to fall asleep and never wake up. Maybe then I will be able to escape this place that I call home.

Q1 Sugar Skull

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in Art Advanced - Hull on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 9:18 am

From what I know Sugar Skulls are a Mexican celebration.  Sugar Skulls are used for day of the dead and they are a offering to the dead. Day of the dead is a day to celebrate relatives that have passed away.

The meaning a my Sugar Skull represents me in a lot of ways. I didn't want to do a skull that was dark, I wanted to do one with a lot of bright colors and flowers. I also wanted to keep the skull basic I didn't want to make it to busy so that it was hard to look at.

For the plaster I used Jereimah's face. I started by cutting up the pieces and making sure that water I was going to use was warm. I put the vaseline on his face to make sure the the mask did dry directly on his face and it would be hard to take off. Then I started by plastering his forehead and I made by way down his face. I let that plaster dry for about 5 minutes. Then I started on the second level of the plaster. I worked from the forehead down then let that level dry for about 6 minutes. When the plaster seemed to have dried I took the mask off his face and let dry. Twos days later I was able to start painting the mask. I made sure that I had all of the primary colors so that I could mix any colors I wanted. I started by painting the top of the mask first and then I worked my way down the mask. I lastly did the mouth cause I was not sure how I wanted to paint it.

Cancer " The Killer" Part 3

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 3:05 pm

This is the last blog that I will be doing with the “ You in the World Project.” This is the post for change. This project has really opened my eyes to the struggle that people go through with cancer. Not only do they struggle with the sickness its self they have to worry if their health care will cover them. Cancer tears families apart not only in America but the whole world. In my past 2 blogs I talked about how the environment is affecting our health. I also talked a little about the things we do effect our health. In my 2nd blog I talked about how health coverage is in America and how we have to fight so that everyone has equal health care if anything was every to happen to them.

My Grand- Father was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 67. He had been a heavy smoker all his life, and was diagnosed with lung cancer, which soon spread to his brain and bones. Months before the doctors diagnosed him he was showing signs of some kind of sickness. He wasn’t himself and he became weak quickly when he would be doing any kind of physical activity. The doctors said that the cancer was forming quickly and it was spreading to other parts of his body. My family was trying to understand why doctors couldn’t see any symptoms of cancer before. Cancer forms over time not in a one-week span. Over the next 2 weeks he seemed to be getting a little better, he was taking so many medicines that doped him up it became very hard to talk to him. We wanted to spend as much time as we had left with him. He soon became very sick again and was admitted back into the hospital. That same day he died.

I tell this story of my grand-pa to say that you have to be screened, for any early signs of cancer. You have to have annual cancer screens. Also you have to make sure that no matter what that you have proper health coverage if you every need it. Also there are so many things you can do to prevent  cancer such a lung cancer by not smoking, even second-hand smoking is very bad (when you are constantly around someone who smokes.) Not having my Grand- Pa still with me tares me up inside. Thinking that if he stopped smoking or took care of him- self a little better he could have been with us for a little longer. If he had went to screenings or the doctor when he didn’t feel good they could have caught the cancer in time so that he could beat it.

For my change I want to give back to the cancer community, cause even though my Grand-Pa didn’t really have the chance to fight. I want to make sure that other people have that chance. I am going to volunteer at different cancer events in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. For my change I am going to get a team together and we are going to volunteer to help out for the American Cancer Society 40th annual Bike-a-thon. The date for the bike-a-thon is July 8,2012.

The Killer "Cancer" Part 2

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 21, 2012 at 7:09 am

In my pervious blog I talked about what cancer is and how it forms. I also talked about how the environment is affecting our bodies in appalling ways. Finally I talk about some statics of cancer in America. In this blog I am going to talk about people’s social class and how that affects cancer. I will also be talking about how people with cancer sometimes don’t get the right treatment because of the health system in America.

15.1% of people in America live in poverty. This means that most of these people don’t have any health coverage this also means if they get sick they will not be able receive a good doctor.  Health Coverage should be equal for all people no matter how much money that they make. These people that are living at the poverty level may be forming cancer and not even know it because they don’t have the right doctors. America is controlled by how much money you have. Treatments for cancer are expensive and most people are not able to pay for it. Not only does their family suffer but they also suffer. When you have money you are more able to pay for the treatments that you need.

It’s not just people without health coverage it is also people with health coverage. A large number of people when they find out that they have a cancer their employer misplace their sponsored coverage, because they don’t want to pay for the high bills. But that is not fair your health coverage is supposed to cover you in the time of need and they are not doing that in some cases. Not having the correct health coverage can disable someone from getting preventative cancer screenings. 24% of people aged 40 and above are not able to get correct cancer screenings because of their health coverage’s. In American we spent $895 billion, on cancer treatment, this number is growing fast because of the aging population.

Childhood cancer is the leading cause to childhood deaths in America. In developed countries such as America many children that have cancer and are never able to be diagnosed, or are diagnosed to late. The UICC (The international Union Against Cancer) wants to help make sure all children are diagnosed. Children are covered for health insurance only if their parents are. Even then some health companies bail out when a parent needs help for a child who has cancer. The American Cancer society wants to make sure every person is covered if they are ever in need.

How can I start getting involved to help make sure everyone is able correct for health coverage? Well you can always volunteer with the American Cancer society. They are open to any ages; they just want to end the miss-treatment of health coverage.

The killer " Cancer"

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 11:30 am

For our “ You and the World” project my topic is cancer. In the past years cancer has become a well known sickness. Could it be the environment that is causing this? In the past years the pollution levels have gone up, people smoke more and drink a lot of heavy alcohol. They never really think what kind of effects this can have on your body. Statistics show that over the past 10 years more people are diagnosed with different types of cancer such as, lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.

Cancer is developed when there are changes in your genetic code (DNA) of a cell (initiation). Normally the body can repair the damaged cells but if they reproduce that may cause cancer, because there are to many bad cells in your body. Usually initiation isn’t the one cause of cancer the cells go through more changes and require a substance called promoter. There can be a couple of years between this process and when you actually start to show cancer symptoms.

imgres-8
imgres-8
There isn’t really one specific cause of cancer. Cancer can come from genetics, health, nutrition, personal habitats and environment. The things you do in your daily life can affect you and cause you to have serious problems later on in your life, such as cancer. It has been proven that smoking of any kind can cause cancer. Cigarette smoking contains 3,800 chemicals that are cancer causing. Your portions and your diet (fatty foods and alcohol) are also linked to cancer. Being in the sun for to long without sunscreen or tanning on the regular also is one of the main causes of melanoma (skin cancer). Also sexual behavior can spread disease, which can also cause cervical cancer. Environmental pollution by chemicals in our drinking water, air, food and work place has also been shown to be a factor of causing cancer. Chemicals that are in the air we breathe have been linked to causing cancer. Some chemicals that may cause cancer are benzene (which can cause leukemia), asbestos (this can cause lung cancer) and vinyl chloride (which can cause liver cancer). Workers that work with metal or heavy labor work such as factories are affected by some of these chemicals

Cancer is something people really need to be aware of. 1 and 3 americans with get cancer and 1 and 6 americans will die from cancer. Those are really scary statistics. Is there something we can do about it? Yes there may be and it is my mission to find out. We can’t let it kill people for much longer. In my blogs I will be talking about what we can do to make ourselves healthier and what we can do to give back to the cancer community.

Negative and Positive space

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in Art - 9 - Hull on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 12:23 pm
A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative space is the space between and around the object. When you draw a picture the blank space around the picture is considered the negative space.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
When I was finding the negative space in my cut out I just looked around the edge of the tree. When i was doing the drawling of my stool i just looked in the spaces where the stool wasn't drawn.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps an artist to see negative space cause the can see where the lines stop in the drawling and you can see the detail in the picture.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Yes seeing negative space enhances the drawings cause you eyes will be more focused on the picture.

Tech "Me" slide

Posted by Arshelle Johnson in Technology - Hull on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 8:06 am
When you see my slide it is very simple. In the background the viewer can see pointe shoes and in the front you see the words dance, sing, love live. I wanted to make sure that my slide was very simple and didn't want to much color contrast. I kept the colors simple with black, gray and the hot pink shoes and words. I used the pop of hot pink to catch you eyes. I catch the eyes of the viewer I made the text for each word different. For this slide i made sure that it was not to much going on and that each space of the slide was used wisely.
