Sugar Skull and more

Posted by Shannon Powers in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 10:16 am

A sugar skull is a traditional Mexican mask or candy used to celebrate the day of the dead. They are often put on graves and sometimes even eaten. I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do with my sugar skull but I like how it turned out. When I started to paint my skull I just covered it in black paint. Then I made the yellow eyes and everything took off from there. Once the stripes were made I decided just to go for the Cheshire Cat look.

Quarter 1

Posted by Jennifer Perez in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 10:15 am

In quarter 1, in art class, we decided to make sugar skulls. A sugar skull is a home made skull with beautiful and creative design on a skull. sugar skulls were made to leave out at a graveyard or at home for the family members or friends that had died in the past, for a mexican holiday called "Dia de los Muertos", which means Day of the Dead. Day of the Dead takes on November 1st every year on the calendar, right after Halloween. The picture below is my sugar skull that I had created. Before I could of started to paint on my skull, we had to draw our skull on our sketch book for what do we wanted our sugar skulls to look like, in order to start painting. After designing our drawings, we had ask anyone in the class to volunteer to do cover there face with plast'r to make the face.
After letting the plast'r dry, you have to peel carefully on the person face. It can take a couple of hours to let it dry after you peel it off. The wait was over now and it was time to paint. I wanted my Sugar Skull to pop, so I took yellow, black, red, and blue. I even made some of my own colors that were purple, pink, and burgundy. I was proud with my design and the way it came out, it wasn't exactly how I wanted to come out from the very first beginning but it came out good and I had enjoyed doing this assignment.

Sugar Skull

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 9:14 am

A sugar skull is a symbol that is used to help celebrate the Day of the Dead which is a Mexican holiday. A sugar skull is a skull that is painted a certain way, its covered in designs and normally is mainly black and white. Sugar skulls are suppose to be very detailed and have some color. Red is a commonly used color.

I came up with the design for my sugar skull by looking online at many different mask designs to use for reference. My mask has bits and pieces of other masks that I saw with my own personal touch. Many things in this mask were painted in the moment, I thought they would look cool so I tried it out and in the end the mask kind of all flows together.

To start, we had to learn about what sugar skulls were and spent time looking them up and practicing drawing them. After that, we learned how to plaster masks and saw a demo. This demo lead right into the making of the masks, the mask I made is of Wynn's face. After the plastered mask is dry, the painting begun. I started by getting all the paint I needed to use and then put on the first coat of paint. I had to let it dry before I put more paint on. The second coat I put on was the white paint, I went back and put details on the mask and also outlined the designs I made in color. This helped the mask pop and brought the mask together. When I added the white paint and designs is when my mask started to look a sugar skull. Even though I was done, I still continued to go back and add more details the following class period to make the white paint looked better and to fix any errors I hadn't caught earlier.I think the different layers of colors and designs really makes the mask pop.

Art Sugar Skull and other Stuff

Posted by Nashrah Malik in Art Advanced - Hull on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 6:41 pm

To me I think I even heard the word for the first. I was unfamiliar with this but when Miss Hull assigned us to do this then I google this to know how does it look like. Sugar skull is actually the number of cultural phenomena and it is basically associated with Mexican events like Dead day and Roman Catholic day. I think you can describe your feelings emotions or happiness by making this and by creating different designs. It was not too difficult for me to choose this design because I love flowers so I decided to make its eyes like flowers and then I made flowers on head that aslo represent that I like flowers. It was fun while doing this in the whole class watching others faces and skulls. So I enjoyed this a lot.

Sugar Skulls are made up a sugary base, and decorated with color icing. It is also used in the spanish cultures, to respect the dead. I research many Sugar Skulls, I notice the difference between the traditional ones verses the "americanized" ones. My design is a mixture of both. It explains the pain within the grieve with the red tears. I plastered the models face, let it harden. Then later painted the mask.

A sugar skull is a traditional Mexican mask and candy that is most prominently made during the day of the dead celebration. The candy version of sugar skulls are used to adorn alters and can be eaten. I came up with the design for my mask by vigorously researching traditional sugar skull designs. The design I used on my mask is slightly different from the design I initially sketched. I changed the design for the mask because all the extra details in my sketch would not have fit on it.

   My first design

When I began this project, my first step was to sketch a design for my mask. Then, I molded the plaster to the face of my classmate Wynn. After this I allowed the mask time to dry and harden. Once the mask was dry, I painted only the black outlines on it. After that was dry, I painted in the colored sections. To finish off the mask I put a coat of clear gloss on it to give it a shiny exterior.

Feet Drawings

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 10:37 am

Readers I had to Draw Feet this week! I absolutely, positively, have abundance of troubles drawing feet. I always make one or two toes incorrectly, and it doesn’t look realistic. So once again I searched drawingspace.com for a tutorial on how to draw feet. I drew a leg, and foot together. The leg look better than the foot, personally. When I first started on the tutorial I drew four circles, to represent my legs and foot. I broke the leg into 3 parts, and foot had its own circle. Then, I started to fill the circles in with lines so this can start to look like a leg and foot. So once, I did that, then I started to shade a little. I made sure my toes looked right, and the leg was realistic. Once I felt like I

Head drawings

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 10:36 am

I am so excited, I drew a face with very detailed features! We got assigned to draw a head, but that could mean anything. So I decided to draw a face, and I named him Carlos. I was very nervous to draw a face, because if I drew someone else face I don't want to be the one to draw their face incorrect. If I drew someone from scratch and make him have It’s own features and personality than I won’t be nervous. I started with a round head and I started to shape the chin, so it look like real face and head. Then I started with the ears, I wanted to make sure everything on the outside of my head was done. I don't know if it's weird that I do that, but I just feel like before moving to one section I have to finish another. So when I went inside the head to draw the features, meaning eyes, lips, and nose. Well, now I know I can draw eyes really well, and so do my readers if you read my other blog, named eyes. I started with the eyes, I started to form the lines to build my eyes off of, and doing all the things I learned. When I finished, I told Carlos his eyes were beautiful. I started to form the nose in the middle of his face, he had a round cute button nose. It didn’t look like a nose, but I know when I shade in Carlos face his nose will look gratifying and realistic. I created the mouth next, I gave him round full lips, he had many creases in his bottom lip, and a tiny dip in the top of his lip. Once I was done his features, I started to form his hair, and gave him messy lines. Carlos wasn’t done yet, shading begins. I started to shade his ears, and all around his chin. I shaded the rest of his face, and Carlos came out beautiful. It took me 4 hours to finish Carlos completely.

Eye drawings

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 10:35 am

Hey readers,

The second assignment was to draw eyes, which is my biggest weakness. I never can get the eyes the way I want to, or my shading is incorrect. Meaning I make the eyes to dark, or to light. Also, another thing is that I usually don't make my eyes  realistic, it looks fake or rushed. So when this piece was assigned I took a few breaths and tried to get my thoughts together. Again I referred to drawingspace.com, and looked at a tutorial on how they draw eyes. It was really helpful, and my eyes came out perfect. I started with basic lines, meaning the shaping of the eye, so it can look like an eye. I started to draw in the basic stuff such as the eye ball, and eye brow.  When I sparingly got my eye the way I wanted I started to shade the important parts of the eyes, it defined the eyes, made them look real. I made serval eyes around the page. My eyes came out better than expected, I keep forgetting I'm a better artist. Scroll down and look at my eyes, tune in next time readers.

Hand drawings

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 10:34 am

Hey art bloggers and readers, my name is Sarena Shuman, and I am an artist in high school. Most of my art blogs are on the assignments my teacher gives me, and I will elaborate on how I feel, and what I did to complete the assignment. I will also include at the end of the blog, a photograph of the masterpiece. Hand drawings was the first assignment of the year for art, and I wasn't nervous. I was calm, and very positive. I was thinking of ways to approach this in a creative aspect, in artist eyes. I didn't want to just draw a hand, or trace a hand. I wanted to be very detailed, and precise, I wanted the shading, and a touch of color. So I went to drawingspace.com for a reference of a hand, I looked at a tutorial on how to draw a hand. I started out with the outline of lines, to build my hand off of. Then I started to form the fingers and nails, as a sketch, and as I started to see my hand form. The lines got thicker and more real, then the shading and specific details came last. It took me about 3 hours to sketch one hand. Then to add my pop of color I added a vase of flowers as if the hand was reaching for the flowers. My hand was shaded in pencil, and a little charcoal, but my vase of flowers have all types of colors. I enjoyed my first piece of the school year. Tune in for the next blog post.
