"50 Fundraising Ideas." 50 Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.signupgenius.com/nonprofit/50-creative-and-easy-fundraising-ideas.cfm>.

The main purpose of the site is to give a person fundraising ideas. The ideas mostly apply to school related activities/kid friendly. The only topic covered is fundraising ideas and quick way to achieve money. The site is a great resource. This source is useful because they help me achieve one of my goals for my club. The source provided a outlet to how to achieve money by fundraising. This source compared to other sources is very different. I'm not saying this source is less important, but I feel others are really key to my project. This source is for ideas that get my brain pumping. But yet this source is still significant because I found several ideas. This source is reliable but was created by someone. It's not a biased site because several ideas for both men and women are introduced. The information used from this source would be the fundraising ideas.

"At a Glance: Guatemala." UNICEF. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2014. <http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/guatemala_60748.html>.

This source discusses the treatment of girls and women in Guatemala. Guatemala is a country that don't look at the rights of women. Often times girls are raped, cheated of education, and physically abused. Gender treatment is key around the world not only Guatemala, and it's difficult for women to succeed if the are treated unfairly. This source is extremely relevant to my capstone and to people in general. This source allows me to know what my club would be fighting for. I have actually factual data, and it makes the cause even more important. This source seems to be different but has equal importance as some of the other sources. This source explains what i'm fighting for, it allows everything i'm doing to have reasoning. This source is the reason.

"Girl Up Homepage| GirlUp | United Nations Foundation | Uniting Girls to Change the World." Girl Up Homepage| GirlUp | United Nations Foundation | Uniting Girls to Change the World. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2014. <http://www.girlup.org/>.

This Girl Up website is the main outlet to my capstone. This site discusses what Girl Up is, the vision, mission, the stories, and how to start a club. The site has all of the clubs around the world. This site is very useful because it's a primary source. This source is one of the most important sources because it is the very outlet to my capstone.

The source has direct facts and key importance. This source is say this source is objective and biased. The source provides a outlet to understanding what Girl Up is but biased because a it talks about is Girl Up, no other organizations really.

Once again this source helped me with my project and starting my club. Since I'm starting a chapter, I used the mission, vision, Girl Up stories, and the blog to understand what Girl Up really means. This source is a excellent source.

"JavaScript Is Not Enabled." Girls Inc. |. Girls Inc., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.girlsinc.org/>.

This source is connected to girl up. They sponsor them because they represent girls everywhere in the world. They benefit me by providing information to be a powerful representation for girls. This source is extremely useful because it helps me understand how to help girls. This source compared to other source seems to be just inspiration and not so many facts. The information is reliable and really inspiring.I use this site for reference on how to inspire girls and women. I love different outlets and maybe out club can write letters to Girl Inc. for supporting Girl Up.

University, Iowa State. "So Your the President..." Extension.iastate. Iowa State University, 1 Oct. 03. Web. 30 Jan. 2014. <http://www.extension.iastate.edu/publications/4H71A.pdf>.

The main arguments of this site is how to be a great president. The article on the site reflects how to make decisions, and be a powerful entity in the club. The article provides a list of guidelines that reflects how a president should run a club, and who should be elected to help them run it. The point of this article is to provide a clear understanding of a great leader, specifically a president. The article discuss how the president is the reflection of the club and is very important.

This source is very important to me and my project because I feel if you are going to lead people you need to know how to first. I want to be successful and that requires great technique an leadership skills. This source is much different from my Girl Up source because it was teaching me about a specific thing and nota idea. This article is a idea and facts about being a president and how to do the job well. I feel this source is reliable because it's a secondary source from a college. The source has facts, and key ideas that's reliable. This story seems to be biased to a certain idea of a president and not different ways to be successful. The article have a structured detail that focus on one way of being president an that's sort of biased.

The information from this source as said before is helpful with me and my project by preparing me to be a leader. The facts and so much don't help me prove anything, it helps me start, create, and be a better thinker. The concepts introduced in the article are very crucial.

The boy

The boy - Medium
This story is about a boy who is in love with a girl with meaning. I set out to show what high school boys really want, but often times can't have because the girl is in a relationship or they are too scared. I believe I accomplished the task at hand. Since I created a short film, and the script had poetry in it, I felt that it reflected art plenty. I was creative and expressive, and I wanted my words to be hurt. I hope the audience understands the story, and get the message I was trying to deliver. It's confusing and powerful, but it's very moving and unique. I gained the power of story telling, and I learned from my own thoughts and other input. It took lots of work to create a 3 minute film. Plenty of outside sources and help. I learned the importance of storytelling and time management.

Final Art Blog, Good Bye Readers!

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 6:21 am

This is the last quarter of Advanced Art, and we continued to finish up on drawingspace.com. I learned so much from the site, and my drawing skills have improved. I started with Section H, which was focusing more on face, lips, and the human body. But drawing these helped me with shading and make things in 3D look more realistic. I applied all the things I learned this quarter and improved on my drawings. My favorite drawing from this section is the kid that looks as if he is running, I applied all the skills I learned into this one photo for sure.

The next and last section I focused on was section I. This was a difficult, yet very interesting section, this section tied in all of the new things I know about drawing. I expressed my creativity through my number 2 pencil creating some of the best pictures I ever drew. One of my favorite pictures from this section is the turtle, I shaded, sketched, and made sure it looked real as possible.

Once I finished that, I remade a art project I did a while back. I copied another artist photo, on a huge paper. I believed my skills and art talents improved, so re drawing this seemed like such a great idea. Once I finished I told my self my hardwork payed off, my art skills improved and now I call my self a true artist. Look below for the final picture, good bye readers.

Artist in the making

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 7:53 am

I am back to writing art blogs on the photos I redo on Drawingspace.com. This time I started with the section F, since I am moving along in the process. Section F is Hatching, and hatching is when you achieved realistic shading to photographs. I created  different pictures from this sections. My shading did improve I felt as though it helped me so much. If you look below there is a picture of a tulip that I feel as though shows how my shading improved. Also, the seahorse shows my skills that I gained from this section.

Then I started to draw pictures from section G. Section G was focusing on three-dimensional shapes, that makes the photo look more realistic. From this section the baldy with no ears was my best picture I drawn. I followed all directions and steps, this section made drawing come to life and better. My skills and techniques improved tremendously and made me more comfortable with my art.

Section H was a little different, because it was a combination if section F and G. Section H was focusing more on face, lips, and the human body. But drawing these I shade and make things in 3D look more realistic. I applied all the things I learned this quarter and the sections to this last section. It was very helpful and my art skills improved, all of these drawings reflect that.

Then I did a outside project from just drawing pictures on Drawingspace.com. I created a picture based on what I see. I was sitting in my room looking at the vase my mother brought me.n I started to sketch and draw it. I then was finished the sketch, I started to fill in color with red and black pastel. When it was finished I signed it and smiled. I enjoyed this work, because I applied everything I learned. I shaded, used 3D objects, and did different colors to blend. Look below for the red and black vase.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Posted by Sarena Shuman in American History - Jonas on Friday, April 5, 2013 at 11:43 am
This is a info graphic to show what happened during the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. We did a great amount of research and lots of reading to get keys facts. We then created the info graphic to portray our message and the facts. We told the story of this environmental crisis, and we hope you enjoy.

Annotated bibliography

The Valdez Oil Spill | ExxonMobil."
The Valdez Oil Spill | ExxonMobil. Exxonmobil, n.d. Web. 31 Mar. 2013. <http://www.exxonmobil.com/Corporate/about_issues_valdez.aspx>.

This source is from the “Exxon mobil” company it self. This source provides great explanations about what happened, and what they tried to do to fix the issue. It gives us exact dates and times as to when the crisis happened. I feel as though the purpose of this article is to include facts and great understanding about what the company did, and the things that had to be put in place to fix the problem they caused. The purpose of this article is to explain what happened, why the oil spill happened, and they things they did to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

This is a useful source because it provides knowledge of how the oil spill happened, not so much of who caused it, but what was then occured afterwards. Nonetheless, compared to other sources, this source does give me a better take on things because it’s from the company it self. This coruse is a primary source giving great detail. But companies do like to live out important facts, to make there selves look better than anythings. Looking at other sources I realized that they include other facts and important facts that Exxon Mobil company doesn’t about the situation.

This source is helpful because it answers the three questions I need in order to complete this project.. It helps me realize that companies dp make mistakes, but do they learn form them? For example, this source  is discussing  what happened the day of March 24, 1989. How the oil company Exxon Mobil Oil company had a spilled in the Alaska waters. The company admits that, and this source helps me realize it.

"Exxon Valdez | Emergency Management | US EPA." EPA. Environmental Protection Agency, n.d. Web. 31 Mar. 2013. <http://www.epa.gov/osweroe1/content/learning/exxon.htm>.

This source is from the “EPA” a company that cleans up and protects the US environment from companies that could possibly affect it. this source provides what caused the Exxon oil spill, and what the company did wrong. site gives great understanding about who and what the oil spill affected, and what harm it caused. This site gives 3 things that the company did in order to fix the oil spill, and how it helped and how it didn’t help. The purpose of the article is to explain what, why, and how the oil spill happened. The things the EPA and Exxon company did in order to help and fix it.

This is a useful source because it provides useful information about what happened. Dicussing all the things put in place to take care of the crisis. However, compared to other sources, this source seems to be more detailed about what was put in place in order to help the crisis. After refering to other websites I noticed that it focuses on what happened to the land, what exxon did, and how some cleans up worked and some didn’t. In the end the goal of this source is to provide great understanding about what the company did to fix it and how it all started. I want to know how the land was in danger.

This source helps me because it answers several of my questions and give me a

"Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Facts." Oceana. N.p.. Web. 30 Mar 2013. <http://oceana.org/en/our-work/stop-ocean-pollution/oil-pollution/learn-act/exxon-valdez-oil-spill-facts>.

This source is from the site Oceana. This site looks at the ocean and how we are treating it. This article is used to give a brief explanation of what happened at the oil spill and facts about the spill. Most of the facts that are on the site are statistics about the spill and they are some of the more surprising facts.

This source is useful for its short and concise facts. These facts hold big information in a small package. For this project having important facts that are easy to read will help push our points forward without overwhelming the readers. Even though this site has a lot of facts it doesn't give detailed information on what happened and how people reacted to the spill. Further research would have to accompany this source.

Aside for the facts on the site it doesn't give any other information about the company or how people reacted. Having a site with just statistics about the oil spill will not answer all the questions needed for the projects. This source will still help but not all the way. In the project we can still use the facts from this site. They will add information that will show the quantity of the spill.

This source is from the The Encyclopedia Of The Earth. Just as the title says this site has information on the Earth. This source has extensive information on this oil spill. The site has different sections to it addressing different topics. The have things like events leading up to the spill, short line treatment, and long term effects. This site shows a wide range of information on the oil spill.

This site is useful for it bountiful amount of information on the oil spill. going through this site and extracting the information will add more information to the project. Also from the range of information we can show how the spill affected different things and how bad it was.

With this large amount of information on the spill we will have a much better understanding of what was going on. Also we would see how people reacted to the spill and how it was handled. This directly goes with the project that we are doing. All the essential questions can be answered.

Great Depression Vs. Great Recession

Posted by Sarena Shuman in American History - Jonas on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 4:07 am
Lexus forman and I tackled this project a little different. We did a debate between the Great recession and Great depression. We both represented one of the two. We created a set of questions, based on the criteria of the project. We knew we needed certain information and facts to make sure this project was the way we needed it. We added fun and creative, way to represent the data. So hopefully you enjoy!

Q2 blogs- How to be a better artist?

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 11:00 pm
Hi, I'm Sarena Shuman a Junior at Science Leadership Academy. I am a very all around artist.  try any type of art, even if I have no experience.

Well, in this quarter Ms. Hull had us go on this website called Drawingspace.com. This website has interesting lessons on how to draw. I started from the basics on Beginner Level starting at B. B is the Learn to See section, which means “As an artist, can visually explore  everything around them  from their own unique perspective, and with new purposes, such as discovering drawing subjects.(Drawing space)” So we did all the mini lessons and drawings with in that section. I learned how to see the object, and draw it. For example the duck, instead of drawing the duck I drew the space around the duck. My duck then got lots of shape and came out wonderful. Refer to the duck at the bottom of the blog. I also feel like shading had a big part to do with this section. Simply because I shaded several of my pictures so that it comes out more defined. I feel as though several of the examples came with knowing how to shade.

I discussed about the section B. But now I moved on to section C. Section C is drawing with lines. This section is about  “Lines, the basic building blocks of drawing, can either be visually rendered or simply implied as a division between spaces or values. All shading styles used throughout Drawspace are made up of the three different types of lines, straight, curved, or angle.” I feel like this section improved my drawing tremendously because without lines what is Art? Everything in art refer to lines, even the shading. This section taught me how to use lines exactly. How to make dark lines, or  thin lines. For example, The Star Fish drawing, was drawing well drawn because  I knew the basics of lines from the previous drawings I drew. By me curving lines and adjusting how long a line is, my star fish came out very well. You can see my drawing at the end of this page.

The next section of Drawingspace.com is D. Section D was also an interesting section. Section D was called squirkling, “Squirkling is an easy method of shading, in which randomly drawn curved lines (called squirkles) combine squiggles and scribbles with circles to create textured values. The curriculum is designed to enhance various shading skills.” I feel like this section was defiantly focusing more on shading, and knowing light from dark in a picture. This relates to section C, but a little more advance.  I used the method squirkling, to shade certain things. Sometimes I would shade in hard, or around the face of one of my drawings. For example, my drawing baby curly, and his hair was drawn by using the method squirkling. The motion of my pencil is around, instead of shape. This causes the lines to be curly and not as straight. So Baby curly’s hair looks natural and more like hair. Also, with this method I can decide whether I want more darker tone, or lighter tone. I really enjoyed this section of the Lessons.

Section E was about perspective. All of the other sections applied to perspective meaning the lines, the way I angle them. I also did lots of shading and tones. Section E says “Perspective is the very foundation, on which drawing compositions either stand or fall. With proper use of perspective, representational drawings appear three-dimensional and visually correct.” Perspective is so interesting and come out to be very real. They look like the object drawn is  real. Section F is more structured but look to further blogs to see.

Sugar Skulls

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 9:15 pm

Dear Readers,

There was a happy halloween in Art class. I created a sugar skull, which was a messy but fun  experience. A sugar skull symbolizes the day of the dead, it is a mexican tradition. It’s celebrated like a halloween. In art class we took our own face plastered it. Then let the plaster dry and harden for a day or two. I added my own creative twist, with paint. I let the brush speak, I didn’t have much of a vision. But once I started, I went for different patterns. This project was the longest process because you want it to be correct, and like you want it. I can put my mask on my own face, to scare or to make someone laugh. Thanks readers for listening.

Walking in breast cancer style

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Physics - Echols on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 9:10 am
This piece "Walking in Breast Cancer Style" was inspired by the month of October. The theme for the month of October is to support breast cancer and the breast cancer walk. This piece is a converse sneaker marked up with the breast cancer symbol. The out line of the symbol is lit with pink christmas lights. We put pink everywhere! Pink trim of glitter, and pink tape, all showed that we are walking in breast cancer style. It's thinking outside the box, something new and inspirational. We wanted viewers to see the breast cancer symbol, showing that  breast cancer is a serious health issue around not only America, but the world. We will walk for breast cancer, any time!

Feet Drawings

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 10:37 am

Readers I had to Draw Feet this week! I absolutely, positively, have abundance of troubles drawing feet. I always make one or two toes incorrectly, and it doesn’t look realistic. So once again I searched drawingspace.com for a tutorial on how to draw feet. I drew a leg, and foot together. The leg look better than the foot, personally. When I first started on the tutorial I drew four circles, to represent my legs and foot. I broke the leg into 3 parts, and foot had its own circle. Then, I started to fill the circles in with lines so this can start to look like a leg and foot. So once, I did that, then I started to shade a little. I made sure my toes looked right, and the leg was realistic. Once I felt like I

Head drawings

I am so excited, I drew a face with very detailed features! We got assigned to draw a head, but that could mean anything. So I decided to draw a face, and I named him Carlos. I was very nervous to draw a face, because if I drew someone else face I don't want to be the one to draw their face incorrect. If I drew someone from scratch and make him have It’s own features and personality than I won’t be nervous. I started with a round head and I started to shape the chin, so it look like real face and head. Then I started with the ears, I wanted to make sure everything on the outside of my head was done. I don't know if it's weird that I do that, but I just feel like before moving to one section I have to finish another. So when I went inside the head to draw the features, meaning eyes, lips, and nose. Well, now I know I can draw eyes really well, and so do my readers if you read my other blog, named eyes. I started with the eyes, I started to form the lines to build my eyes off of, and doing all the things I learned. When I finished, I told Carlos his eyes were beautiful. I started to form the nose in the middle of his face, he had a round cute button nose. It didn’t look like a nose, but I know when I shade in Carlos face his nose will look gratifying and realistic. I created the mouth next, I gave him round full lips, he had many creases in his bottom lip, and a tiny dip in the top of his lip. Once I was done his features, I started to form his hair, and gave him messy lines. Carlos wasn’t done yet, shading begins. I started to shade his ears, and all around his chin. I shaded the rest of his face, and Carlos came out beautiful. It took me 4 hours to finish Carlos completely.

Eye drawings

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 10:35 am

Hey readers,

The second assignment was to draw eyes, which is my biggest weakness. I never can get the eyes the way I want to, or my shading is incorrect. Meaning I make the eyes to dark, or to light. Also, another thing is that I usually don't make my eyes  realistic, it looks fake or rushed. So when this piece was assigned I took a few breaths and tried to get my thoughts together. Again I referred to drawingspace.com, and looked at a tutorial on how they draw eyes. It was really helpful, and my eyes came out perfect. I started with basic lines, meaning the shaping of the eye, so it can look like an eye. I started to draw in the basic stuff such as the eye ball, and eye brow.  When I sparingly got my eye the way I wanted I started to shade the important parts of the eyes, it defined the eyes, made them look real. I made serval eyes around the page. My eyes came out better than expected, I keep forgetting I'm a better artist. Scroll down and look at my eyes, tune in next time readers.

Hand drawings

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 10:34 am

Hey art bloggers and readers, my name is Sarena Shuman, and I am an artist in high school. Most of my art blogs are on the assignments my teacher gives me, and I will elaborate on how I feel, and what I did to complete the assignment. I will also include at the end of the blog, a photograph of the masterpiece. Hand drawings was the first assignment of the year for art, and I wasn't nervous. I was calm, and very positive. I was thinking of ways to approach this in a creative aspect, in artist eyes. I didn't want to just draw a hand, or trace a hand. I wanted to be very detailed, and precise, I wanted the shading, and a touch of color. So I went to drawingspace.com for a reference of a hand, I looked at a tutorial on how to draw a hand. I started out with the outline of lines, to build my hand off of. Then I started to form the fingers and nails, as a sketch, and as I started to see my hand form. The lines got thicker and more real, then the shading and specific details came last. It took me about 3 hours to sketch one hand. Then to add my pop of color I added a vase of flowers as if the hand was reaching for the flowers. My hand was shaded in pencil, and a little charcoal, but my vase of flowers have all types of colors. I enjoyed my first piece of the school year. Tune in for the next blog post.

Sarena's Interview

Posted by Sarena Shuman in American History - Jonas on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Note: Due to the fact that my interviewee wanted to be confidential and didn't want to show her face, I wrote down word for word what she and I said. I didn't go to another person to get actual video footage because her answers was remarkable, and she was real and didn't give me short answers. But she said I can upload a photo of her.

Me: Hello, may I conduct a non partisan interview by video taping you, for my school project. It's about voting, and trying to get me to understand the voting process better.

Interviewee: I don't want to be video taped, but I would love to help. Can you write down my answers?

Me: Sure, so here is a question.

Me: what's your name?

Interviewee: Irene Spann

Me: What motivated you to come out and vote?

Interviewee: Well, I'm a single mother raising two kids. A boy and a girl, and if I don't come out and vote that shows that I don't care about my children future. I care about their education, income, and their lives. My children are 17 and 15, and I'm trying to set a positive example, and every vote counts. I want the best to win, if my one vote from Philadelphia, PA can help I stand out here in the cold and vote. Shit I want to make a difference in my country, even if it's just a vote. Sorry for cursing.

Me: It's alright, That's a great answer. Next question, What impact do you feel that your vote will have on the election?

Interviewee: I feel as though the impact that I had is that I get to voice my opinion. I contributed to society, I feel important and it's positive.

Me: Here is the next question, Do you know why vote on tuesdays?

Interviewee: No, I wonder why? Do you know?

Me: No I don't actually,

Me: Are you always sure of who you are going to got for when your walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

Interviewee: I am always sure who I'm going to vote for! I won't walk into the booth with out knowing! I follow the debates with the candidates, and make sure I know what's going on in the political world. If I don't have a clear understanding what's going on how can I vote honestly and wisely. Once again, I hate to sound like I'm repeating my self, but I want to benefit this country.

Me: What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

Interviewee: Some changes I hope to see is cleaning the streets, more construction meaning renovations to neighborhoods. I love to see the younger generation out here voting, and doing something positive. This one thing I can say Philadelphia come together for something that can benefit us all.

Me: Alright, last question. Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning? Radio, Tv, print, internet, other.

Interviewee: Campaigning television, meaning watching the debate, and all of the commercials. I seen the news, always talking about the candidates, keeping me on top of my game with politics.

Me: Thank you so much, your interview enlightened me and gave me a good understanding. I see now that voting is a very crucial, and important to America, and people of this country.

Immigration - past or present

Posted by Sarena Shuman in American History - Jonas on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 6:19 am

Somethings that surprised me the most about this information we found in this project is that certain things that happen can effect immigration so much. When I found out from 1881-1914 Jewish migration was happening because of things in there country. When America was being effected by the great depression immigration lowered. When they passed an ACT to slow down immigration it got effected. To see why people come and go was interesting. The obvious thing about describing the graph was  how it decreased and increase, but not knowing why made me wonder. But once I found out why, it made it easy to understand and comprehend why the increase and decrease was happening. I feel like immigration will stay at a steady rate for the next 2 decades. Once America gets it's economy up and running more. Some more jobs open up then immigration may rise.

Me and my group came up with someways that is easier for us and others. So we know that pictures help and a little information we gave helped.  People get to understand why immigration increased and decreased just as I understand. Some challenging  parts of this project was getting everyone on same page. Some people were behind other people in the group.  Some different things I would do is make sure I know what program I'm working with. Dipity.com was a very hard program, and I would test it out before.

Group project LOVE Park Ceiling Tile

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 9:24 am

Well this was interesting, and so much fun. Three other girls created this with me, and we worked hard on it. We spent lots of time on this, to get it to great perfection. We used several colors, and based it off of the photo of love park. Now it's finally up in the ceiling and looking wonderful.

Observation Drawings - Landscape Rodin Museum

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 9:13 am

Instead of going to the Landscape, we stayed in class room and looked around. I looked at my friend book bag. I drew what I seen. I added creativity, and some style. I tried to be as accurate as possible. I used paint and pastel, to make the effect better. This wasn’t to hard, It was an ok project. I didn’t like this art that I did, but it’s not that bad.

Observation Drawing - Close up drawing Mutter Museum Garden

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 8:59 am
This Project was most interesting I did such a great job on it. Instead of going outside to look at the Mutter Museum Garden, we just looked outside the window. I looked across the street from the art studio, and seen a beautiful brown, orange, and white curtain. I drew everything, it had in it. From the pattern to the exact colors. I used paint at first and didn’t like it at all. I thought it looked normal, no extra flare or creativity. So I started to add chalk. Brown, orange, and white chalk. The picture started to pop, and became something extraordinary. One of the best pieces I drew all year.

Abstraction Motion - any size (not smaller then 8-11”) Choose a motion and create a painting/drawing/collage/photograph

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 8:56 am
Well if you read my other Blog post, Abstract emotion, I talked about how weird abstraction is to me. So now I have to create a piece with abstract motion. The piece I drew was a bed of flowers blowing in the wind. I used pencil first to outline and sketch flowers, I made it look like they were blowing. I added creativity to it and lots of colors. I colored the piece in with pastel. The piece came out very interesting and I loved the motion picture. It took 3 hours to create this piece. Sometimes I be so surprised in the work that come out afterwards simply because with abstract you just draw how you feel.

Abstraction Emotion - any size (not smaller then 8-11”) Choose an emotion and create a painting/drawing/collage/photograph

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 8:53 am
Ms. Hull gave me this assignment, I was nervous. I didn’t know what to do and how to do it. Abstract, I know it had to do with colors and how I feel, but it’s a hard process. I took this assignment and tried to be different think of something new. I think that is what abstract emotion is. So I grabbed different sizes of paper, and started to draw anger, sadness, and happiness. I drew with pastel and paint.  I added my extra flavor to it and tried to incorporate my art style into it. By me being so nervous and weird when I got the assignment, I didn’t put my full effort. I had doubts about my work and how I felt.

Shade, 12x18” each (4)

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, April 13, 2012 at 10:27 pm
Shading was fun and easy. We learned shading before, so I could do it very easily. I found that shading was most relaxing and not as stressful. I tried to have fun. I followed the guidelines, from a website Mr. hull gave us. I picked the four I liked the most, shading was interesting because I use shading for almost every picture.

Texture, 8.5x11”each (3) - water, fur/hair, scales

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 10:09 pm

Doing different textures was a lot of fun. I enjoyed drawing water the most, because I could draw my swine and be creative with the ripple and my water. Drawing scales on a snake was difficult. But I watched the video to make sure I did it right, and I was happy with how it came out. Of course the artist drew it a little better, but I did good for my first time. Drawing hair was boring but fun, because hair is difficult. You try not looking like an amateur or making it look just like lines on a circle. I drew a short cut; it could have been a little better. But overall drawing texture was an interesting experience

Self portrait, 24x36” large - charcoal or pencil

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Going in to this project, I was so confident. I did the smaller portrait so now I’m a little more comfortable. But the only thing I was nervous about was drawing on big paper. Trying to draw at a bigger size is difficult. But I started out on what I know, so first I drew my head, and made sure my chin was looking right. The mirror is a big help because if you draw what you see it will come out great. Then I started with my eyes, but this time. I added shading and darker lines, so it can look more real. My nose I did better this time, better than the small self-portrait. My hair was different style from my smaller self-portrait, so my ears were covered. I added shading in my hair and then tried to show my cheekbones more. I was happy with the final product.

color wheel, 18x18” - watercolor

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 9:20 pm
For the color wheel first I watch a video and looked at different color wheels. I did mines a little different; in each triangle I did one color but different shades. The colors I did were red, pink, purple, blue, orange, green, and yellow. This was the more fun and coolest picture of this quarter. I enjoy painting, and mixing colors. You’re experimenting with new ideas and beautiful colors. After I was done painting each, I outlined it with black. After drying for two days, my color wheel turned out so nice.

Self portrait, 8x11” small - pencil

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 8:22 pm
First off I started off with a moan. I hate drawing my self, and I don’t believe in my talents. But I grab a sharp pencil and start to draw. I draw the shape of my head, and carve my chin. I start to draw my eyebrows and eyes, it was my best work. Then I started to carve my nose, while I stare in the mirror. Nose was the hardest part, but I tried. I did the ears next, as exact as possible. The hair was most fun and creative. I added color and different strokes to my hair. I feel like I did well; now next time when I draw my portrait I will be confident.

E2.U5: Q3 Benchmark

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 12:30 am
Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?  What did your group decide to do and why? The assignment was to create a website to show a person that speaks spanish from another country what to do in Philadelphia. Showing them where to eat, how to have fun, how we celebrate, and what to do. As a group we decide to do a wide range of food places, different categories. We then showed the important thing to know when your a tourist in Philadelphia. Such as , how to tip. We chose fun events and events that can relate.

How do you feel about your final product? Final product is ok, I feel like it was rushed. I Tried to do as much as I could.

What did you learn from doing this project?  I learned how to extend my spanish. How to broaden my aspects and explain things.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same? Try to get my partners to edit more, and help more. Change the design.

Love Struck!

Posted by Sarena Shuman in English 2 - Pahomov on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at 5:26 am
This podcast is like a teenage reality show. It's discusses about how teenagers lower their standards in relationships. Both they were disrespected, and they stayed in the relationship. Maybe they were fed up with the person they were in the relationship, and it was not what they expected. Teenagers have long lists of the dream girl or guy they want. This list is called standards; lets see what type of standards these teenagers have.
Enlgish Podcast

Reflection

Crossing boundaries could mean several of things. Depends on how you cross your boundaries. But what I learned from my project is that the over all definition is basically stepping out of your comfort zone or normal routine. It sometimes can be a good thing, and sometimes bad. Plenty of people cross their boundaries with money. Many over spend on their budget, and try to live a life that they can’t afford. That’s stepping out of their boundaries. Just like in my podcast, all three of the teenagers I interviewed stepped out of their boundaries, due to relationships. They had standards set on how they want their love life to be and why. But they couldn’t find someone to live up to those standards. It was interesting because while creating this video, I realized that us teenagers want a love life that can come later.

It was fun to interview people my age that can relate to me. I could hear where they were coming from and I knew exactly how they felt when they were conversing about their story. I know we all have these specifics standards, but I realized we don’t really know exactly what we like. In the interview the teenagers had very high standards, then afterwards said they changed their standards. But the not so fun part was the editing part of the podcast. I found it hard to combine all three interviews. Then picking music and the volume of what level I want my music to be at. It took me longer to edit than to interview the teenagers. But the editing paid off, because my peers said I did a great job with everything including the editing. I agree with them, I got rid of any background noises or anything the person I was interviewing said that wasn’t helping my podcast. I went in doing this podcast with an open creative mind. One strength in my podcast is how I interviewed several teenagers and then combined them, to make it more interesting. One weakness is that my questions could have been more detailed and rich. This podcast project was interesting and very fun to do.

Daily Routine

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 10:22 am
This assignment was about your daily routine. Describing step by step what you do in spanish. You have to make sure you conjugate, know the vocabulary. The vocabulary was things that were in the bathroom, what you do in the morning, items, and other things you use in your daily routine. I enjoyed this project alot. It was fun taking a pictures.

  • That my routine was constant and very interesting. Makes me laugh how I do the same thing. but never noticed.
  • Conjugating. I do it very well.
  • Right now im reflection on my project. Collaboration was used when my peers edited my benchmark.  Inquiry was used when I made my thought process about imovie. Research I studied the packet, and words.
  • I would actually add a video of  me doing these things instead of pictures.

Copy the Master

1/2 - 13

Copy A Master

Copy the master was super interesting and a great project. I finally realized I can draw. This piece made me gain more confidence in my self. It's hard copying someone famous. So ms. Hull told us to find an artist any where or internest, in a book, etc. So i went to the shelf in her room and grabbed a book. I seen this strange but interesting photo by a guy name gamboge. So I got a 24x36 piece of paper, and then printed gamboge picture out of the painting. So I grabbed charcoal, and started with his big head, made sure the shape was right. Then I added the detail I seem such as his hat, nose, slim mouth, hands, glasses and cigarette. The hardest part was the shading, with out seeing natural light I had to copy where the artist shaded. I finished this in 3 hours. I loved this drawing, and the effort I out into it. I could have added color to add my own flare to it.

200 Photos

12/5- 12/9

12/12 - 16

Edit 200 Photos

Ms. Hull told us to take 200 photos of everything and anything we wanted. I focused my theme on my friends, and my self. I had fun taking photos, and I specifically tried to be as creative as possible. The reason for taking 200 photos is to edit 5 photos, and publish them. I was nervous because I don't know how to work photo shop. But after Ms. Hull taught the class I became expert. So I took five of my favorite photos and edited.  I had one photos and cropped and added a colorful back ground. Most of the other photos i changed the tint, blurred edges, black and white, and other things.

Internet Sculpture

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, January 16, 2012 at 9:05 am

11/21 - 12/2

Internet Sculpture

Best project of the year is this project. The project where we found a sculpture on the Internet and copied it. I found a dress made out of new paper. I got really excited, but I had to think how to make it. I took a cardboard box, and bent it so it can fit around my waist as a skirt. So then I grabbed a stack of new paper, and grabbed some glue and pencils. I stuck the pencil into the glue and smeared one side of the cardboard with glue like sheet rock. Then I ripped piece of newspaper up and crumbled in and stuck it on piece by piece. It took 3 hours to do this. Then when I was done with the glue and newspaper, I got the paint. On the web the dress wasn’t painted, so I added my own flare. I took purple and black paint and splattered each side, to add a retro look. I let it dry for a day, and then it was done. This project was interesting, because it’s different ways to interpret the skirt.

Quarter 2 Benchmark

Posted by Sarena Shuman in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 8:37 pm
By: Sarena Shuman

" You sound stupid! Use the right grammar; I don't know how you get straight A's. People judge you by how you talk, you know that?"

In my head, I’m saying It’s you and me here mom. Nobody can hear me.

But I whispered “Ok”

I never understood language. We all say the same words. If you understand what I’m saying than, why speak exactly proper? People going judge you anyway. If you really got something wrong with you then you get picked apart piece by piece. “Language is power!” That's what my mother always says. I just thought language is one part of the puzzle to how someone can judge you. Race and language relate in away. A black person talk ignorant it's "normal". A white person talk ignorant, they are considered to be talking "black". A black person talks proper they are consider to be talking "white".

“Hey Guys, how are you?”

“Yo Sarena, You black! Cut that shit out!”

“What? I was serious.”

“Why you talking like you white?”

“I was talking normal, I always talk like this.”

“You irk* Me, I swear!”

Just the thought of getting judged by the way you talk, is mind-boggling. You use language to communicate, if you understand me why should I change the way I talk to you? Now when I approach my friends, I talk to them like I’m from the “street”. I speak differently all the time. Speaking to my friends is totally different from when I speak to a teacher now.

“Yo, Sarena”

“Wassup, what you been up to”

“Chilling you know girl”

When I talk to my teacher we have the same conversation just with different words.

 “Hello.”

*Irk- means annoy

“How have you been Sarena?”

“I have been fine, and you?”

“I have been fine, thank you for asking.”

James Baldwin once said, “What joins all languages, and all men, is the necessity to confront life, in order, not inconceivably, to outwit death.” Meaning the way my friends and me speak is not taught in school. But proper English is. So the way I talk to my friends and to my teacher is totally different. I wonder, do I change my speech for acceptance? Makes me think about my Identity and who I truly am. I told my great grandmother about my thoughts. Here comes the lecture!

“You got two strikes against you. Being black and being a woman. You can give people excuses to bring you down. If you do, they will use it to their advantage."

“But how, Granny?”

“Most white people think that African Americans are stupid and can’t do what they do.”

“But I’m smart period.”

“By not talking proper, dressing right, and looking presentable. They will look at you like the average black woman. When I was growing up, woman cooked and clean. We spoke our proper English down Flordia, no education really. But the white folk just acted and treated us like we were stupid. When we were slaves, they didn’t even look at us like we were humans. I’m 89; African Americans can do so much now. Including getting an education. Don’t mess it up! That’s all I’m saying, baby.”

I nodded in agreement.

I looked into my great grandmothers eyes, and saw how much she cared. She made me realize that it’s not all about language. I had the pieces to the puzzle but it was never coming together. Language, race, environments, and society are all joined together, most of the time. When my grandmother said, “We spoke our proper English down Florida, no education really.” I formed a question, what’s proper English? Maybe that’s not the question, what’s proper English to people? Where you come from can determine how you talk. One area can think a person from a different area is talking incorrectly. So when my mother said " You sound stupid! Use the right grammar, I don't know how you get straight A's.” She was questioning my education, which is what many do. The reason my mother tells me this is because she didn’t teach me to talk that way. The environment I’m in the most is the way I talk, but sometimes when I change my environment I may speak how I do in a total different environment. They tell me to talk “proper” because the way they talk is different or somewhat “correct”. But didn’t someone create English and other languages. Why can’t I create words and language? New words get added to the dictionary everyday. Maybe you have to be a professor to makes words. Words have meaning, vowels, and letters. Easy to make, but why call my words or words that’s not “correct”, slang. Strangely, what they don’t know that I know is, Race, environments, and society makes up the way a person speak. Not how educated you are, and how well you follow the rules of “proper” English.

Large Clear Object

11/7 - 18

Large Clear Object

1st quarter we had to do a project, and draw a clear glass with all the shadings. But it was 8x6 paper, and very simple. So now it’s 2nd quarter and Ms. Hull told us to draw a clear object but this time the paper was 22x36. I got really nervous and didn’t know what to do. Then I just relaxed and thought about what she told us. I got my paper and black charcoal pastols. I remembered back in 1st quarter when we watched the artist start the glass. I shaded the background lightly so in the end it can look great. Then I drew a wide circle to start. Not all the way to the edge though. I started to form the rim of my 3-D glass, so it can look like it stick out my paper.

I drew the rim and made it bend into the circle, which was the format of the bowl. Then I started to blend and shade the color. The outside of my bowl is not solid black; I tried to find light and dark areas. That was difficult because sometimes it was hard to find. So when I got done my vase. I looked at it and made sure I didn’t see anything in the background.

Monologe

Posted by Sarena Shuman in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 12:59 pm
(Rock back and forth)

“Yo Spit! Where you at?” Blast in my ears

(Huffs) The desert is dry and deserted like the inside of my head, my soul, and my body. “Yo Spit! Where you at?”(Echoes in my head still) I know my damn name. I’m a young girl, with chipped nail polish, ashy feet, curled up toes with sand particle in between them (Looks at her feet). I have burnt color skin, thick, tangled hair, with scars that can run on for miles (rubs her face, and body). It’s dry out here, nothing to do. It seems so free, free enough to be me. I’m trapped. Abandoned with my own self. (Scratches head) So die, to die, no water, why not die? A young savage, a young failure, a young loser (deep breathe). Still the words “Yo Spit! Where you at?” lingers in my head.

I’m by myself so why not die? No mother! No more hitting, no more scars. No more red leakage from my busted face, and body.  Life moves in slow motion as I try to get away from my mother tight grip, and cigarette smoke. I’m trapped. No daddy! No more dope dealing, selling my body, and making money the fast way. My daddy taught me how to do it all, I make a buck fifty an hour. No more pain? Pain, oh I know pain.

I’m trapped. No more friends! No stealing, robbing, killing, hurting people. My crew and I have people shaking. What we want, we get. But still, I’m trapped. No uncle! He loves me, he tells me everyday. He lays me down, and does things I don’t like, but he loves me. I’m trapped. (Counts on fingers) I got me, myself, and I got my desert. I’m trapped. I want to stay trapped. I have to come out sometime. Because these damn words won’t leave my head “Yo Spit! Where you at?”

Back to my mom, dad, friends, and uncle. Back to scars, dope, prostitution, and stealing. I portray a life I don’t want. My desert will be here, my closet, under my bed, my roof, and inside a box. My desert is everywhere life isn’t hurting me. Oh! My desert will be here. Ready for the next girl, that can’t stand to look at her self in the mirror. Prepared for the next boy, that gets abused, and have black eyes, and deep bloody cut marks. Setup for the next teen, which lives a life of hurt. I am a young girl that hates her life. I’m trapped in reality, with everyone and everything I hate. (Balls fist up) So die, to die, why not die? (Tear)

Glass

Ms. Hull told us that we need to make a glass in 3-D I was prepared. Until we seen the video for an example, I got nervous. It looked so difficult the way the artist drew it so good. I got my paper and thought how did the artist start in the video. I shaded the background lightly so in the end it can look great. Then I drew a wide circle to start. I started to form the rim of my 3-D glass.

I drew the rim and made it bend into the circle, which was the format of the bowl. Then I started to blend and shade the color. The outside of my bowl is not solid black; I tried to find light and dark areas. That was difficult because sometimes it was hard to find. So when I got done my vase I started my flower. I formed the pedals and made sure I shaded n black and grey. I added some white to lighten the color. Then I added red into it, to make an extra step, and make my picture come alive. I blended red and peach together to make my peddles pretty. I enjoyed this project.

Ms. Hull told the class to draw a 6ft picture of a girl named Jamie in our class. I was nervous and going crazy. But I just breathed and relaxed and tried to know where I would start. First, I took the 6ft piece of paper and nailed it to the side of the wall and got her side view.

I started with an outline of her whole body. Then blend her hair in work colors, and stark forming her face. I made her shirt and started to form her body. Then I made her waste, and pants. I messed up but corrected it. I made the sneakers.

Then I was happy, but the color blending was hard. I added green, red, yellow, and orange in the hair. But then the shirt was green, and added great effects to it. The pants I left regular colors. When I finished I was satisfied.

Why I write?

Posted by Sarena Shuman in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 1:15 pm
Why I write?
Ha! Is that even a question.
My pen caresses my paper in a slow gentle way.
The way my sweaty palm grips my pen, making a permanent mark on my ring finger.
The smell of fresh lined paper, it's aroma makes me all tingly inside.
Why I write?
I write because  my mind is my resource, my mind hold my feelings, and my mind is my pen.
Why I write?
The words just stumble on the paper in a jolly kind of way, they don't care if it's a sad story or not.
They just happy they can help me express how I really feel.
Why I write?
When I write, the world stops and all I see is my paper and my pen.
The tip of my pen touch the blue line on the white track and it's off.
Why I write?
I write because I can be myself, and don't have to act a certain way, it's me and my pen.
Why I write?
Ha! Is that even a question.
Why you write?

Live Life To Die

Posted by Sarena Shuman in English 2 - Pahomov on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 7:42 am

“We back here again!” The two sliding doors flew open. The lights were bright. People everywhere. I think to myself, “It must be my baby cousin with the bad case of the runs.” I call him Poo Poo Kazoo. Sounds coming from everywhere. Coughs, sneezes, ambulances, and babies crying. The smell was awful; it smelled like vomit, cafeteria food, and sick people. I stayed close to my aunt and my brother stayed close to me. We were walking like we were in a scary movie about to get murdered. My aunt asked, “Where is room 436?” to a man that looks like cookie monster. He had on a bright blue uniform on with a badge that said “Front Desk Security.” The guy said “4th floor then a left.” We got on the elevator and went up, which seemed like forever. Finally the fourth floor. We went down this long hallway, the light got dimmer and dimmer. Then there was the room, room 436, the numbers made me nauseous and nervous. I was scared. There were old men with their hairy, wrinkly butts dangling out the back of dotted pajamas that looked like sheets. The door too room 436 was cracked. We walked into the dark room with a television playing, and the news was on at a very low volume. Then I slid back the blank white curtains and I couldn’t believe who it was.

I was eleven years old, being scared and nervous was occasional, but this point in time tiny red ants were running every where in my tummy more than usual. Sometimes strange things happen and time freezes. I either want to run away and dismiss it or face it. Being eleven I couldn’t face the issue that punched me right in my red ant filled tummy and quiet frankly I didn’t understand. Sickness is part of life, but a cold was the worst I ever got sick. I coughed, I sneezed, and my throat hurts. But never was I put in a hospital bed.

When I slid the curtains back and seen my Father, all the red ants fell out my butt. The horror in my eyes, as they burned before the lava fell from them, I was just so distraught. My mother sitting there, with a pale sick look on her face. She didn’t even say “Hi babies”, like everyday when we come from school. I studied my father like I had a test the next morning on a big black man in a bed. He had snakes shooting venom in his arms. Something breathing for him, and one half of his body moving and the other half practically dead. As I stood back for a while, I felt like a sponge; I was absorbing all that just happened. But I got the courage to walk, to the man I didn’t even notice. I slowly grabbed his hand; my hand was shaking it has never done that before. His hand was rough and fragile, his eyes popped open, and I whispered, “Dad why did you have a stroke?”

Being 15 now, I understand seeing someone you love at a young age on the edge of life or death is difficult. So many questions that need to be asked but at that point in time, you cant even regurgitate the questions you would like to ask. This day I grew up and moments like this in life you don’t want to take it for granted. I looked at life in a whole different view, because someone can be gone today or tomorrow and not saying I love you can hold on to you forever. Being 11 I got a clearer understand of death and what causes death, but honestly we are born to die.

A gentle tear trickled down my face as I said “I would do anything you ask, are you in here because I spilled all of your cologne?” He grabbed my hand tight, tight enough to lose circulation and chuckled.

He kissed me and said, “I love you young lady, and no matter what happens life changes.”

“I love you too dad”, and I let go of the sand paper hand and left room 436.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 10:57 am
My element is Technetium atomic number 43. Technetium is an element found in spectrum. Its silverish grey metal, that tarnish slowly in the air. It used to be available in small amounts. It is also radio active. That's how I made my print, I constructed the radio active symbol and then built from there. First I made almost everything that had to do with radio active, the spill in Japan, the symbols, and masks. I included that in my sketches, but then I wanted to plan and simple so I put words, little design, and the radio active symbol on my Block. Then I traced my sample on to my see through wax paper so it can be easy to trace on my block. So it took a long time to carve my block out. but then I painted it and printed. I got 3 colors and 3 different prints. This project was a great project and I enjoyed the process it was very difficult. If i could change the project I would have did a more difficult layout to show my true artist skills

Top Journal Entrees

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 2:19 pm
Introduction
I chose 6 journal entrees, that was from the middle and beginning of the school year. They are mainly form the book Freedom writers, that was my favorite book this year. These journal entrees are true and very expressive, I think you all would enjoy these.

Journal 1

I write because writing is am addiction. I’m addicted to the way the pen makes music too the paper. The way it balances between two lines. The way my soul and thoughts just fall out of the pen. It tells all of your inner thoughts, the intertwine between the paper, pen, and your soul is a match made in heaven. I fein for the way the pen races across the line paper, it never gets tired. I don’t write because a teacher told me or because it is an assignment. I do writing freely, just the way my small chocolate hand grabs a pen and my soul just opens up though the pen. It’s almost like I’m conversing with someone. I don’t need a clinic or hospital, but with out writing I would be sick. I love my addiction.

Journal 2

They say I’m cocky, I will never be anything. Coming from the deep dirty streets of south Philly, I’m just another black girl. Trouble only come from girls like me, well at least that’s what they think. Their looks cut me; I can hear their thoughts screaming so loud. She going be pregnant by the age of 16, she going be addicted to boys. Only if you really knew me, no question is do you really know me? I’m the girl who had to grow up to help her mother. I’m the girl who smiles to make others happy. I work my fingers to the bone to have a great education and to try to satisfy my insatiable appetite to learn. I’m the girl who’s scared to step her foot out side her door, or to even watch a movie with shooting in it. I’m that girl you people think so bad of that helps her sick dad. The girl who doesn’t believe she is conceited but confidant enough to walk with her head held high, never looking down. That same girl who loves her family. Yes, I’m a black girl and from south Philadelphia, but also this girl if not a whore, and I’ll not be pregnant by 16. I’m glad you don’t know me, because frankly I do not want to know you.

Journal 3

I feel sorry for you. They spit in you face and treat you like dirt. They look at you like you’re a piece of dross. They look at you like you’re a piece of gum on the bottom of shoe. They spit on you when you’re down; you slice your arm and the red pain leak from your skin. You will have sex for attention. You are insecure and feel your self-esteem is at a low. Now you wear tight clothes, and show off the little you have on your body. Suicide won’t be the answer. Show people you are a human just like them. I never thought we would hate people for what they like. Race, creed, nationality yeah maybe, but not for what they like. You hide who you are for friend’s bullies, and families. You cry at night, because you don’t want to like what your heat like. Be proud of your self; be proud to be gay and who you are.

Journal 4

The S sounds funny when people say it; it rolls off there tongue in a stumble. They spell it so wrong; my family says it means something special. People joke about it all the time, but I still yet to see what’s so funny.  My name seems so sudden and scary, like the color grey. Grey is not to dark and not to bright, but dull and unfriendly.

My name is a mixture of my aunt and grand mom name. My aunt name is Trina, my mother youngest sibling. My grand mom name is Sarah my mom’s mother. She feels I remind her of them in some way, but I don’t think so. My grandmother is so loud and rambunctious. Her attitude frightens people, and she has a problem with listening to stuff people has to say. My aunt on the other hand has attitude that people walks away from. She thinks she is still a young girl, and her character seems like it should be forbidden off this earth. She feels that she is better than every one; she doesn’t help with our family most of the time. She takes responsibility for stuff that’s her, but not others. She fun to be around and has the ability to relate teens.

My grand mom appearance seems so young and sassy; her hair color is a shimmery gold. Moles on her face, and perfect square bright teeth. I love knowing my grandmother she is spontaneous and full character. My aunt dressy fun and sexy, her butt attracts much attention.

I have a mixture of two names that has two personalities. That’s probably why I act the way I do, I don’t know weather to be shy or jus have outburst. Does my name say anything about me? Does it even mean anything special? These the questions I think of, like why did my mother think of this name? But I know the answer to that question it’s because I’m special to her, just like my grandmother and aunt.

When I get home my real name is never said, its always Re or Re Re. At Home it’s like my name doesn’t exist, unless it’s a serious occasion. They throw Re around but its only two letters from my name, the two letters smack dab in the middle. I don’t love my name but I like my name sort of. Does it define me? Watch when I try to say it, Sarena the S rolled off my tongue in a stumble to.

Journal 5

I’m scared; I’m afraid, and petrified. They do it but not me; I got a mind of my own. When it comes to this one specific topic, my skin, and tummy, does a cartwheel. I’m on my own as I walk with a straight posture; they stare and can smell the virgin on me. Girls got gaps between their legs you can tell they been poked before. We are so young in high school, and me having the attitude I have. I know for a fact that Sex, won’t be for along time. I hope my scent lingers. But sometimes I wonder does my mature ways and strong personality cause me to be different. I hope the smell of my virginity makes them insecure and jealous.

Journal 6

I would gravel on the ground and eat dirt. I was in my own unknown world, fresh meat. I seen this one group, they were it. They seemed special, amazing, I would love to be part of that group. I realized being fresh meat, means you are not ready to be tenderized yet.

Quarter 3 Benchmark ( The odyssey Compare/Contrast Essay)

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 10:11 am
Penelope Vs. Penelope

The third benchmark was comparing a character from the The Odyssey, and I really had to think and enrich my mind, and think broadly.

People Write about Penelope everyday from her beauty to her love to her tale to her story. The comparison of both Penelope from The Odyssey and Penelope from the poem  “Penelope”. Both authors write different styles but they both look at Penelope in a unique way, and describe her love and passion for her husband in two totally different perspectives but also at moments the same way. Homer the author of The Odyssey writes a book and gives a lengthy story about how Penelope story goes and Dorothy Parker the author of “Penelope” gives me a good 8 lines not too much and not too little, about the missing part of Penelope life. While both Penelope from The Odyssey and Penelope from the poem  “Penelope” hope for their loving husband Odysseus, one gives another point of view on the story of this couple.

Penelope from the poem “Penelope” is sad and hurt, by the tone of the poem and the strong words she use for the language of the text. She States, “ I shall sit at home and rock; Rise, to heed a neighbor’s knock”. She wants to wait for him and believe he is still out there, she won’t do anything until the love of her husband return. Similar to Penelope from The Odyssey she is sad that her one true love is away for so long, and she yearns for his love again. She talks to a man in disguised which is Odysseus and tells him how she really feels about her husband being gone for so long, she states” A black day it was when he took ship to see the cursed city, destroy I call it, I hate to say its name!”(Book 19; line 297- 299, Page 399). Her heart cracks as words stumble out her mouth as she talks about the day Odysseus, left, she wants her husband back. Both Penelope in poem and Penelope from book wait in sorrow for their loving husband Odysseus to return, and they want him back but while he is gone their hearts continue to ache.

Penelope from the poem “Penelope” speaks for herself in her own words showing the audience her own heartache for her husband’s return. In support of this Penelope says in the poem “ Brew my tea, and snip my thread; bleach the linen for my bed. She talks about how she feels, she speaks from the heart and say’s what she does in her own voice. Penelope from The Odyssey doesn’t speak her self; the person telling her story is Homer.  In The Odyssey he describes Penelope saying, “Now down from her chamber came reserved Penelope, looking for all the world like Artemis or golden Aphrodite” (Book 19, page 392, lines 55-56). He starts from when she comes down the steps to comparing her to Artemis or golden Aphrodite. Penelope from the poem speaks for her self; if she feels pain she expresses it in her own voice. Penelope from The Odyssey voice is drowned out by Homer, he speaks for her and expresses how she feels.

Penelope from the poem “Penelope” waits for Odysseus, she tries to be strong and hopes for the best for but she still waits for his return. The tone of the women is so up beat as she tries to think positive she says, “ He shall ride the silver seas, he shall cut the glittering waves.” She thinks he is out there coming back to her, riding in the breeze trying to find his way back to her love, and has much faith. Penelope from The Odyssey doesn’t waste any time, she think my husband is gone for 20 years he is dead. He most likely won’t come back, and I will not sulk over him I will get re married. In her pretty voice you can hear how she doesn’t believe he is coming back she states “Odysseus never again will I embrace him” (Chapter 19, page 398, line 95). Penelope from The Odyssey lost faith in the one she calls her husband and Penelope from the poem “Penelope” waits and has faith her strong man is at sea.)

Penelope from the poem  “Penelope” seems as though she has more love for Odysseus even though she and Penelope from The Odyssey are quite similar. They have similarities because both wait in sorrow for their loving husband Odysseus. But the two have differences in their personalities. Penelope from The Odyssey has Homer speaking for her and Penelope from the poem “Penelope” is speaking for herself. Also, Penelope from The Odyssey thinks Odysseus is dead and Penelope from the poem “Penelope” thinks that he is still out there and she will wait for eternity. The Poem “Penelope” showed a different type of Penelope and with out she would be just a one - dimensional character.

Quarter 2 Benchmark (Memoir Vignette)

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 10:10 am
Room 436

This is benchmark 2 the memoir vignette, and this is actually my favorite. I actually got to pick what I wanted to write about and speak form my hard, instead of stating facts from books. This is a true and inspirational story.

I woke up again with a groan, not wanting to be bothered. Mom and her scratchy loud voice, you can hear her two blocks away. This short woman sure has pipes on her as I whispered while slowly crawling out of bed, man do my mouth taste disgusting (opener). I had knots and a bad feeling running in my body (foreshadowing). Time for another day at school, as my looney family bum rush down the stairs. When I stepped outside an instant wind blew threw my hair cheating for my brother, stopping me from running. My cheeks and ears stood still as I tried to beat the wimp. Mother comes screaming out the door as always, now for about five minutes we wait for my dad to wobble out it was a tradition. We waited the five minutes, then he came out different, he wasn’t walking normal, and all he kept doing was coughing but like a dog, bark bark barking all over (repetition and foreshadowing). The sound effect startled me; my mom wasn’t paying attention she was too busy talking about tonight. He slammed the door and waited for a minute to start the car. My mom noticed the bark and then she put on her wife voice the voice of a soft humming bird (metaphor). She said, “ Are you alright babe”? (Dialogue) while rubbing his back. Then she gave my dad two big fat thick white missiles that he had to shove down his throat. (Imagery and hyperbole) Ahhh, that soothing sound, finally I can hear the mean and grumpy engine start, its like music to my ears (personification).

Sitting in class with screaming kids and annoyed teachers. I felt like I was in first grade, kids had baby stains all over there shirts. Girls rolling their eyes and popping there gum, but I was zoned out in another world. I was thinking about what my mom was talking about in the car this morning. I wasn’t paying attention I think she said something about meat loaf, I sure hope not. The time sure was moving sluggish, but when the bell screeched all you could hear were screams, lockers slam, and curse words in the thundering hallways (magic three). Then this loud mean munchkin hall motor screams down the hallways, “ GET YOUR DAMN STUFF, AND KEEP IT MOVING”(dialogue) She continues her rampage down the rest of the hallway. I walked out slowly, thinking I was catching the stinky cheese bus (Imagery). But surprisingly my aunt was there to pick me up, I got in the sparkling silver car, and I seen my wimpy brother, thinking to my self this was a lucky day for both of us. My aunt wouldn’t say anything the whole ride, her eyes had water sliding down them. It was like a water slide on her face (simile).  But then I noticed this wasn’t the normal way. Instead of taking the busy highways, we took the dirty and loud downtown streets. There was nothing but traffic and horns beeping. We showed up at the place where babies were born.

The two sliding doors flew open, the lights were bright. People everywhere, I think to my self, it must be my baby cousin with the bad case of the runs, I call him Poo Poo Kazoo (humor). Sounds coming from everywhere coughs, sneezes, ambulances, and babies crying (Imagery-sound). The smell was awful; it smelt like vomit, cafeteria food, and sick people (Imagery-smell). I stayed close to my aunt and my brother stayed close to me, we were walking like we were in a scary movie about to get murdered (simile). My aunt asked “Where is room 436?’ to a man that look like cookie monster, he had on a bright blue uniform on with a badge that said front desk security (simile). I slowly grabbed his hand; my hand was shaking it never done that before. His hand was rough and fragile, his eyes popped open, I whispered “dad why did you have a stroke”? God chose you why were you bad to him (dialogue). A gentle tear trickled down my face as I said “I would do anything you ask, are you in here because I spilled all of your cologne”(dialogue). He grabbed my hand tight, tight enough to lose circulation and chuckled. He kissed me and said, “I love you young lady, and no matter what happens life changes. “(Dialogue) That was the first day I ever heard my dad call me young lady, that day I grew up in that hospital, knowing that life will throw obstacles in your way. But when it happens you have to be prepared. I whispered “I love you too dad”(dialogue), and let go of the sand paper hand (imagery and metaphor) and then I left the room 436.

Q1 Benchmark (Macbeth Character Analysis)

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 10:06 am

 Lady Macbeth

This was the first benchmark that was received and it was the hardest one. This benchmark is about looking at a character from the beginning of Macbeth to the end. I chose Lady Macbeth, I felt she was basically the only girl, and she was tougher than most the men. This benchmark required a lot of patience and time.

Thesis- Lady Macbeth is a conniving woman, let greed arrogate her body, and then her mind erupted.

In Act 1, Scene 5, Macbeth sent Lady Macbeth a letter telling her that he had been promoted to Thane of Cawdor. He had an encounter with Weird sisters, and they read a prophecy that he could become king. Lady Macbeth, showed so much excitement, she stated, “Is too full o’ th’ milk of human kindness, to catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great; art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it” (Page 17, line 16 – 19, scene 5, Act 1). Lady Macbeth is questioning Macbeth’s ability to get the job of killing Duncan done; she feels he is too kind. She thinks he doesn’t have enough ambition or drive to go on with the murder. This reveals the start of a cold heart, and how she is letting her greed and ambition take charge.

The King is coming, to celebrate Macbeth becoming the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth came home from the war greeted by the greedy Lady Macbeth, discussing with his wife when the king is coming. Lady Macbeth say very proudly, “Shall sun that morrow see your face my thane is as a book, when men may read strange matters” (Page 18, line 60-62, scene 5 Act 1). Lady Macbeth is saying that she can read Macbeth like a book, all his expression and all he wants is on his face. This reveals that Lady Macbeth and her conniving ways have grown.

Macbeth broke the news to Lady Macbeth saying that he is too loyal too the king, the plan about killing Duncan isn’t good. As anger travels through lady Macbeth body, she says harshly “Does unmake you, I given suck, and know how tender ‘tis to love the babe that milks me, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out, had I sworn as you have done this” (Page 22, line 54-59, scene 7 Act 1). Lady Macbeth is saying she would do anything for Macbeth, and he should kill the king for her. He promised her he would be strong and kill king Duncan and she would keep a promise if he tells her to kill a baby. Her veins are running with avarice that’s how bad she yearns to be queen.

Scene 7, Act 2, Macbeth just killed Duncan and came back with the murder weapons. Lady Macbeth very worried and anxiously says “You do unbend your noble strength to think so brainsickly of things. Go get some water and wash this filthy witness from your hands”(Page 29, line 48-50, scene 7, Act 2). Lady Macbeth is a woman, who wants things done her and the right way. She said that wasn’t the plan, you did something dumb by bringing the weapons here. Wash the blood, guilt, and everything else off your hands. Her manly over coat was revealed, she had to take charge of the situation. She is willing to put her guilt and anger inside behind her, her mind is in charge of her heart.

Macbeth killed Duncan, she is telling him to man up, wipe the guilt off of your hands. Be strong, and go like nothing ever happened. He brought the murder weapons with him and she grabbed them to plant them on the guards to finish the job. Macbeth was acting like he was in shock and very guilty. Lady Macbeth had to transform into a deceitful mastermind. As her over coat of manly essence came, she had to grab hold of the situation so she stated, “My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white”(Page 29, line 67 – 68, scene 2, Act 2). Lady Macbeth states her hands are the same color as Macbeth covered in blood, but she doesn’t care. Her heart is so cold and greedy she can just go like nothing ever happened. She is ashamed to be as weak as Macbeth, she wants him to just man up. Lady Macbeth is a woman of a manly essence and this shows so much. Her guilt is killing her but the ability to rule and be in charge is keeping her alive and well.

Banquo and his sons found Duncan murdered, and all the thanes, and Duncan children are reacting abominable. As Macbeth and Lady Macbeth reactions are phony, acting like they don’t know what’s going on. Lady Macbeth’s sham is still in place as she is about to faint she says  “Help me hence ho!”(Page 35, line 116, scene 3, Act 2. Lady Macbeth went with the plan by acting very dramatic like she didn’t know what was going on. She plays heartbroken and very sad that there was a murder in her house. She is basically saying help me, I don’t feel well. This shows that Lady Macbeth cold heart, yearns to be queen and when she want something she will get it, even if it calls for her to act very fake.

Act 3, scene 4, Macbeth is alone a lot, Lady Macbeth asked for a word with her own husband. He is dropping hints that Banquo and Fleance will be murdered. Lady Macbeth very curious asks, “What’s to be done?” (Page 47, line 45, scene 4, Act 3). Lady Macbeth doesn’t know what’s going to happen, she is not included in the plan. But she is curious to know what’s going on. She asks what’s going to happen or what will you do. Now she is worried, she is not the one in charge of this murder; this reveals that now her manly essence and partnership with her husband may be fading.

Banquo was murdered, there is a dinner going on at Kings Macbeth’s house. The lords, thanes, and Queen all around the table. Then Macbeth sees Banquos ghost, no one else can see him. Macbeth is reacting horribly and has everyone worried thinking he is severely sick. Lady Macbeth pulls Macbeth aside says very firmly “O proper stuff! This is the very painting of your fear. This is the air drawn dagger, which you said led you to Duncan. O, these flaws and starts, imposture to true fear, would well become”(Page 52, line 61-65, Scene 4, Act 3). Lady Macbeth acts very strong, and tells Macbeth this is only your imagination and fear. You killed Duncan, you feel guilty don’t worry about it. She saying you are not really seeing anything, calming him down. She is taking control of the situation, making sure the secret wont be told, this reveals her greed.

Act 5, Scene 1, Doctors come to exam Lady Macbeth, she is very sick. The gentle woman shows the doctor how Lady Macbeth is acting, she is sleep walking. Lady Macbeth face is zoned out, and you can tell in the expression in her face she is angry, she says “Out, damned spot! Out, I say! One – two - why then ‘tis time to do’t. Hell is murky. Fie, my lord, fie! A soldier and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to accounts? Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?” (Page 84, line 34-40, scene 1, Act 5). Lady Macbeth has cracked, her strong scent of manly essence has faded away, she is sleep walking. She speaks aloud about what she and Macbeth had done. She is saying get the blood and guilt off my hands, we kept it a secret, and nobody knows it, we killed Duncan. She knows so much evil things her heart has caught on fire, and now she feel like she’s in hell. Everything she done had caught up to her, she wonders why this guilt won’t wash away from her skin, her mind had erupted.

Gentle Woman and doctor come to examine Lady Macbeth. She wants blood, and guilt to get out of her head and go away. She is sleep walking telling all of her secrets, what her and Macbeth had done. As the doctor and gentlewoman discuss what is happening to Lady Macbeth, the gentle woman states “I would not have such a heart in my bosom for the dignity of the whole body” (Page 84, line 54-55, Scene 1, Act 5,). She is saying she would not be that cold hearted and mean, she would not have such an sinful heart in her body; for the health and respect of the body.  She saying all those secrets, guilt, betrayal, greed, and evilness in one heart, can really kill you. The gentle woman feels its melicious, just gut wrenching. Lady Macbeth heart is fully charged with guilt, evilness, and deception. This conniving and greedy woman with a heart of the devil, manly scent is gone, her heart is filled with guilt and her mind is corrupted and lost.

In conclusion, Lady Macbeth has evolved because she was a woman who was strong, and wanted Macbeth to unsex her, and make her manly. She was conniving and convincing, to make Macbeth kill Duncan. Her smart plan could fulfill her dream to become queen, the greed she had running through her vain and blood stream arrogated her body and mind. But her manly essence started to fade away as the story went on. The quotes from the stories supported the thesis because it showed how this cold hearted, strong, and conniving woman that was corrupt and evil, turned brain sickly. Shakespear sent out a very interesting true message and that is if you do evil things, bad things will bound to happen to you, perfect example is Lady Macbeth. Her heart was cold and bad, and she did very evil things. But then, Her heart started to get warm and her woman appeal took over again. Her mind started to erupt and all the lies, greed, evil, betrayal and deceit killed the woman, who had a scent of a man and heart of a devil.

Short Reflection

I sat for a while and thought, what does this portfolio say about me as a 9th grade English student? Honestly I have no clue, but I would say that this portfolio shows my weakness of writing but also my strength and greatness of writing. You can tell in this portfolio that I am creative with words, and different with my style of writing from most 9th graders. But also my work takes so much editing, before my teacher, audience, and me can be satisfied. I’m that 9th grade student that can be one of the best writers, my potential is there but the work sometimes doesn’t show. I need grammar work, and learn how to write better in past and present tenses.

When you read my portfolio you will see a strong writer, that puts effort, thought, and precision in her work. You will see my creativity, and how I love to use imagery to spice up my writing and give it that BAM! I have two pieces that have that special BAM! First one is Room 436 my Memoir Vignette, My endearment for this piece is so prodigious because I got to go free, and we didn’t have a specific guideline. Room 436 shows how great of a writer I am, and I open up to my audience so they can really meet the author. The second piece I idolize is my Macbeth creative, also another piece with no guideline. This piece showed a side where you just don’t write stories and big paragraph but also short sentence that can me just as much as a paragraph. You can write a stanza that will have your audience pondering, and that’s what I did with this piece. I wrote a big poem that sometime a young audience doesn’t understand, they have to think deeply to actually read it. These two projects were superb and every minute of creating it was substantial.

If I could start 9th grade English over again I wouldn’t because I have grown so much in the process that I don’t want to go back where I started. I have difficulties with writing pieces, such as the 10 paragraph Macbeth benchmark, because I started to run out of what to say and how I would describe a lady I didn’t know. I looked at her as a character in a book that we were reading. Going back through my work, I see that I have grown from just a freshman writer, to a sophomore or maybe a junior writer.

Love, Blood, Sweat, and Tears! Domestic Violence #3

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Friday, May 27, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Me & The World

Domestic violence scares me and gives me the shakes. But I heard and got a story that scared me most. It scared me most because an older man abused this girl as a teen because she thought it would be better for her. This heart to heart story really harmed me, because that’s like me getting abused.

A young girl named Linda at the age of 18 her life became hell. She met what she thought was a wonderful man. He was one of the bosses from her job. He was so kind to her at first. They started out passionate and loving, having a great time together, and it was wonderful. Until 2.5 months later she became pregnant, and she didn't want any more kids she already had one before she met him. She told him she was getting an abortion, that same day he told her to stay home from work. He got her fired from their job and for the first time he wacked her right across the face for saying “I’m leaving you”. Then after he told her “to stop crying, and suck it up we going to go shopping”. She listened since he was 31 and she was 18, ever since that day the hitting became brutal beatings. Even though she was pregnant he didn’t care, he told her “if she was a good girl, he would have to discipline her so much, she hated hearing that. She had her daughter, she thought the child would make everything right but she was wrong.  It got worst kind of, he kept her from her friends, and you can see the bruises and scars. 2 years later she was pregnant again, she couldn’t get rid of it because she didn’t want to upset him. She wanted to die, she felt her life didn’t matter but the kids were her everything, and she couldn’t leave them. He was kind of nice with this pregnancy she had twins. So now she got 4 kids, and 3, which is his, she doesn’t want any more kids so she got a tubal ligation
. She was ready to leave and then she was pregnant again, she was that 1% that could get pregnant. So she stayed for 1-½ years and then left, she left her 4 kids behind and took the oldest one with her. She took him because he was hers not his child. She started a new life became a stripper to support her and her child. Then she met a new man, he promised not to hit her. He didn’t for 1½ years, she stayed with him because she thought it was a one-time thing. It happened again because she went out partying on a Friday with her friends, she told her son o go get the neighbors and he saved her life. Then after that her friend got her with a handsome man and she promised he wasn’t the hitting type. She lied, he hit her all the time, but she stayed with him for 6 ½ years. She left him, and met up with him again he tried to kill her she finally tried to fight back. From there her life became better, she got trust issues but now he life is better.

This girl was a great example, young and her life became hell at the age of 18. It may seem like domestic violence is the way relationships suppose to be once you are in one but it is not. Domestic violence makes the rest of your life hurt, and all you can do it cry. As you can see sometimes kids, or something can keep you in the relationship. But you have to have a plan to get out or the rest of your life will be Love, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Domestic Violence!

Love, Blood, Sweat, and Tears! Domestic Violence #1

Me & The World

Loving someone and being in a relationship can be dangerous. You can have heartache, infidelity, and financial issues. Many problems can occur, but the biggest danger in a relationship is Domestic violence. I’m super interested in Domestic violence because Domestic violence is an issue, and many people look over it and don’t care for the problem.

Domestic violence can harm you physically and mentally; it can harm you so bad, that you stay in the relationship. Some people get addicted and get attached to the violence. Domestic violence can come from any sex, male or female. Domestic violence is used to control your spouse or lover, to dominate the relationship. The abuser likes to play mind tricks, and get you really scared. They threaten you, break things, are super hostile, and very aggressive.

I don’t understand how you can love someone, which harms you physically and emotionally. That hits you and insults you, damages your feelings and makes you insecure. Someone that makes you bleeds your own blood, and tastes your own tears. How come so many women and men stay in the relationship? The abuser is the coward not the person being abused. The abuser needs to harm someone to make them feel big about their self.

The scariest part of it all is that people die from domestic violence. People lose loved ones, they have heart attacks, internal bleeding, stress level to high, and worst of all the abuser kills them with there bare hands. If the abusers feel they are losing power in the relationship. If I ever got abused I would be very distraught, to sit and go through pain and suffering. To eat blood and tears everyday of my life, and to live life with permanent Scars outer and inner body.

Me & The World

In the last blog I gave the basic information about domestic violence. I gave a summary about the types of domestic which are emotional violence, physical violence, and sexual violence. Domestic abuse is an epidemic in communities, cities, states, countries, and the world.  One of the most un reported crimes in the world. Change sure will come, but this blog is about the numbers and statistics.

One in every four women will experience domestic violence on any type of level in her life times. 1 of every 30 men will experience domestic violence in his lifetime. 85% of the victims are usually women. 1 of every 6 women will be raped, and 1 of every 33 men will be raped. More women get sexually and physically abused, than men do. Most people get raped by their own partner or lover.

Domestic violence is serious and is an eye opener. Even though women are usually the main victims, gentlemen please be aware you can also be a victim.  Domestic violence can end your life, give you emotional trauma, and harm you severely. You should go get help, not only is your partner or lover harming you but your harming yourself by staying. Domestic violence can be anywhere and sometimes people don’t even know when their partners are harming them emotionally. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS FAR FROM A GAME!

Negative Space

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 10:29 am
In between, anywhere you can see through and if its not the object. Imagine that an object has a background green, and the object is brown. Color in all the
spots you see green at. For my cut out picture, I see negative space to get the shape of the tree,
its a different style of art. For tree cut out, I knew the white was negative space, and dark if the actual tree.
In the stool drawing we drew what we seen and how the stools look for the regular drawing. Fro the negative space stool there was green paper behind it, and we just drew the green paper. It easier to see the negative space, in the drawing with color.
Its great for artist to see negative space because you can draw the picture in a total different view, maybe different from another art. Negative space provides variety, and different way of artistry.
Seeing negative space, does enhance drawings it give it variety and makes the
picture mysterious.

Orange,Perspective,Hull,Shuman

Posted by Sarena Shuman on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 2:01 pm
This project started out as a challenge, i started from the bottom up. Right from when Mrs. Hull was telling us what a perspective was. For practice we drew a line with a vanishing point in the middle. This project was for us to learn how to draw lines from the perspective to make the picture look 3-D and real. So we created 3-D boxes, and she taught us horizontal, vertical and orthangonal lines. Then the next time we tryed this we had to try and make a door on the right a window on the left, a carpet at the bottom, and a sky light on top. We had to draw all four of these things form the vanishing point and all these consist of the three important words she taught us orthangonal, horizontal, and vertical lines. Then it was time to step up and try it on our own. I thought I wasn't going be able to do it but then i thought i did this all i have to do is draw form my vanishing point. For the real project, the picture below, we started from a even box right in the center of a paper. Then we drew huge X through each corner, so it was in 4 sections. For the top section I drew 12 dashed line evenly measure for the ceiling tiles. Once i drew my horizontal line and vertical line from the vanishing point, the ceiling tiles was created. Then i had to add my lights and vents on the ceiling every two tiles it was a light. Once I was done with that since on standing far on the other side of the room looking in, I had to draw the big window from my vanishing point in the far back of the room. I drew my windows and blinds, nothing big just lines. I drew the ledge of my window  to make it stand out from the wall, to make it look real I had to use my artist eye. Then the right side I drew the couch and the door first because it look the hardest and stood out to me more. Since I knew how to draw a door already, I just drew from the point and drew the door. The the couch i knew was basically in front of the door so I drew it from there, it was more free hand than the ruler but I still knew how to draw from the point. Then the board is actually sitting on the wall not the floor like the couch. I still drew from the vanishing point. The  got the accurate board, then i drew everything on that wall. To the left side of the wall is a window, i know how to draw that and where i was standing i didn't see the whole window, but i know how to draw a basic window from when we first drew the picture. The the floor was easy n 20 tiles. Also i drew my tables and stools where the students were sitting at. Then I added final touches and fixed it up and my room was complete. All i had to do is draw lines form my vanishing point and remember the 3 words horizontal, vertical and orthangonal lines. This project was hard at first because you had to understand but practice made not perfect but good. It had difficulties, like you had to make sure most of the stuff was orthangonal and came from the vanishing point, but some things in the class room you didn't need orthangonal or draw from the vanishing point. You just had to have vertical or horizontal lines.

View this blog Jonathan Spencer. This artist did very well, he showed detail and followed the basic rules. He picture showed he drew from the vanishing point, and had orthangonal, verticle, and horizontal lines. He showed every angle of the class room where he was standing at, its very precise, and neat. I love this artist work.

10-20-30

Posted by Sarena Shuman in African American History - Sherif on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 10:10 am
The Purpose of my of my 10-20-30 page was to interview my closes family, and find out the real history through african american music. Go through all the greats and hits to see which really builded american music. I had to base my project off one simple question why didn't african americans get credit? Where did R&B come from but then I found out that the white people really didn't want r & b and change in american music. While interviewing my father (John Shuman) He gave me the theme the basic idea, he made me look deeper into the project.

The hardest about this project, is getting the information. I had to research deeper than other students. There weren't many articles about how whites stole african american music, they didn't talk about it or said much about it. THe further the years went the harder it got, so i found diaries, and letters. I found articles and things like that, and concert dates about things like that. I went in depth with my research.

The good thing about my project was i could add my own flavor and add spice, and flavor. I created a page built off inspiration, and what i wanted. The colors, african american pictures, the way i put a collage was all a message. Made the overall question mean something, and I enjoyed this project.

Posted by Sarena Shuman in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 9:23 am

Well, In my first slide I used Alpha, big text, and minimum use of contrast. But i had alot of empty space even though you can, but it didn't make the slide worth remembering. The text wasn't big enough but the quotes were very strong, and the colors were very interesting. My first slide i used alpha but didn't use it very well.

My second slide I used alpha to put my words on my picture so they can stand out. Also i used make type big so my audeince can get more of a better meaning of what picture meant, I added a title the is very large and has much contrast. Also contrast rule because I use one color and change the main meaning of what I was trying to say in another color. The other  rule i used was  empty space to leave audience guessing wanting more, its not much food but there is a lot of substance.
