“The first selfie ever taken in history.”

In 1839, the first ever recorded “selfie” was also the first photographic portrait. It was taken by a young man named, Robert Cornelius. Robert Cornelius was a chemist in Philadelphia. He took the photo outside of himself outside of his family’s store. He took the photo by taking off the lens cap, sitting for a minute before putting it back on. On the back of the picture, Robert Cornelius wrote “ The first light picture ever taken.”

Robert Cornelius was slowly becoming a famous photographer. He had two studios in Philadelphia. He also collaborated with other photographers, and they took pictures together. However, him most recognized and famous photography, was the picture that he took of himself, also known as the “selfie’.

Article 1: Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren is the current President of the U.S. and has been for 2 years which is half of his term. I will tell you some things that you might not know about him. He was born on December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New york. His father was Abraham Van Buren who was a farmer that ran a tavern and inn who owned 6 slaves and his mother was Maria Hoes Van Alen Van Buren. He was also vice-president for Andrew Jackson and was a U.S. senator.

When he ran for President he said he would leave slavery alone in the U.S. where it already existed. He also said that he opposed abolitionists which helped him gain southern support. He was going to follow in the footsteps of Andrew Jackson who nominated him for presidency. He continued some of the things Jackson started like the issue withe the Natives. However he then made a bold step when he reversed his policies to make peace at home.

Article 2: Views on Andrew Jackson

This cartoon is of Andrew Jackson the "Man of the People". Many thought of him as a good man who fought for the people’s rights. However he known to be rather violent as he had a quick temper. He often got into bar brawls, duels, and fought basically anybody who opposed him. Even when he became president he used violence as a solution to many problems mainly anything to do with the Indians. He fought wars with them and took away their land either by buying it or forcing them to move which one such thing became known as the trail of tears.

So I’d say this cartoon is an accurate depiction of Jackson. It shows him with a gun with him saying anybody else want to discuss politics and a dead guy behind him. That basically describes his life as he caused many Natives to die when he fought with them. And when his Presidency ended he said that he regretted being unable to shoot Henry Clay who was a senator. He then chose Martin Van Buren his vice president as the candidate for the next election so that his policies would be continued.

In my National History Day paper I will explain the correlation between Daniel Ellsberg and Edward Snowden and how they both had leadership to stand up and show their whole country the things the government was doing behind their backs.

Japanese American Immigrants

Posted by Olivia Mack in American History - Jonas - C on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 7:31 am

The Japanese Americans have been through so much to get to where they are today, because of their toiling, their hard work, they were able to propel immigrants up the social ladder. The Japanese left behind the legacy of their children and all immigrants who choose to enter this country today.

One of the strongest legacies in the history of the world is that of the Disney empire. Roy and Walt Disney were two very different leaders, but that aside, the legacy is what matters most. The Disney brothers are shining stars within the topic of leadership and legacy.
