Caitlin Keough Q4 Slideshow

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 9:57 am
For my week 1 art piece I chose to draw this statue when we visited the Rodin Museum. It had some shadows on it and I really wanted to practice drawing those. My second art piece is just a coloring sheet that I found online and printed out. I'm happy with how it turned out and with the colors I chose. For my third art piece I drew some simple drawings of bugs. I like the drawing of the dragonfly best because of the dot work I did on it. For my fourth piece of art, I found a random piece of wood and I started painting it. I was really happy with how the blue background turned out and how nicely it blended together. I kind of regret adding my name onto it because it looks a little messy.

Adolescents, crime, and brain development

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Science And Society - Best - Y on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 8:58 am

A dilemma that has been plaguing law enforcement for ages is whether or not adolescents who commit crimes should be treated the same as an adult who commits crimes. It’s only fair that criminals should be held accountable for their actions but should that be reconsidered when it comes to children? That is the question that the criminal justice system can’t come to a decision on.

First, let’s get the facts straight. Adolescents act different when out in groups. In a study conducted by Temple University, adolescents were asked to participate in an activity where they had to make a last minute decision on whether they should stop for a yellow light or keep going and hope for the best. When the adolescents were under the impression that their friends were watching them complete the activity, they were much more likely to run the yellow light. Although for adults, there was no change in behavior when they were told a friend was observing them. When compared to the results gathered from adults who participated in the experiment as well, it was obvious how much of an impact the presence of peers has on adolescents’ decision making skills. When adolescents are out in group the part of their brain that has to do with rewards light up which makes them more focused on the reward for making a risky decision than the possible dangers.

Some people think that in order to fix this problem, actions should be taken to try to reduce the crime rates of adolescents so that they don’t have to get involved in the criminal justice system in the first place. They want to stop the problem at the source. Changes that can be made to make this possible are better enforcement of curfew and increased adult supervision. Although there are some people who believe that adolescents should be held to the same standards as adults, regardless of their age. These people doubt that adolescents’ not yet fully-developed brains affect their behavior and that they should be able to control themselves and their urges when around their friends.

Another unique viewpoint on this debate is to blame the parents of the young offender. These people believe that the child acts out because of economic or social problems in their family. Children are a product of their parents and if the kid is a bad egg, the parent must be too. This poses the question: Who is really to blame? The adolescent with the easily influenced brain, the bad parent, the bad friends, all of the above?

Caitlin Keough Capstone

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Capstone - Martin - Wed on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 9:27 am
My Capstone was inspired by the internship I have had at my old elementary and middle school, Green Woods Charter School, for the past three years. Over the course of the past five years GWCS has changed a lot and collectively been in four very different school buildings. The school currently resides in it's permanent location that they built from the ground up. Not only is the school in a brand new building, but the GWCS community has more than doubled and there are a lot of families that aren't as familiar with what GWCS is all about. The adjusting process was difficult so for the first part of my Capstone I made a informational brochure for prospective families to use to get a glimpse at the school.
The school's campus is unique and suits GWCS's mission to create a better and more eco-friendly world. They have a lot of new technology on the grounds of their school that a lot of people have never seen before. For the second part of my Capstone, I created signs that teach visitors about the technology and have code on them that links to a website with even more information on the environmental technology that GWCS uses.

My website can be found here.

My annotated bibliography can be found here.

Q3 Artist's Statement

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Advanced Art - Hull - a2 on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at 12:15 pm
When I draw I usually just stick to using pencils, so the advanced coloring was really different than the work that I usually produced but I had fun making it. I really like how the Three Musicians one looks because I tried to stick to all greens and blues and some yellows when I was coloring. I was initially going to try to replicate the true colors of Starry Night but decided to do a completely different color scheme instead. When I colored the mushroom picture I tried to do all unique combinations of colors for each mushroom to see which ones looked the best.
For my self portrait I decided to play with the positioning of my face because I normally would have gone about drawing myself from a head on point of view or a side profile. I also used a little bit of color to fill in parts of the drawing.
For the value and animal shapes assignments I did some shading of the ball and of the squirrel's tail. For the basic shapes drawing I simply just tried to replicate the shapes that made the tea pot as good as possible.

Dreams

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Science And Society - Best - Y on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 3:27 pm
Science:
Dreaming occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is the stage of sleep closest to waking. While we sleep, our brains are more active than they are during our waking hours. This is because our brains use sleeping as a way to process all of the information we learned during the day so that we can remember it. Many scientists and inventors have come up with their discoveries through dreams. For example, Niels Bohr discovered the structure of an atom in a dream.

Society:
During a typical lifetime, we spend 6 years of our life dreaming. Everyone dreams even if they claim they don't. Those people just can't remember the multiple dreams that they do have. People who are born blind still dream, but their dreams are more centered around the other senses. People that are born with sight but go blind later in life can still see in their dreams. Some people have created small societies where they discuss their dreaming experiences. They try to figure out what their dreams mean and how they can control them. There are a lot of forums where people discuss lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is when you are aware that you are dreaming. Lucid dreaming is rare as it is, but it's even rarer to be able to control your dreams during lucid dreaming. Another sleep occurrence that has sparked a lot of discussion is sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is when your body doesn't successfully transition into or out of REM sleep. This leaves you with your eyes open but without the ability to speak or move. Sleep paralysis typically only lasts between one to two minutes, but it can be accompanied by vivid and scary hallucinations. When you dream, you can only see the faces of people that you have seen at least once before in your life. Other interesting discoveries that have been made about dreams include that men have more violent dreams and that 70% of the other characters in men's dreams are other men whereas women dream about both men and women equally as much.

Self:
I used to have a really hard time remembering my dreams, but recently I have been getting a lot better at doing so. I haven't used any techniques that are supposed to help you remember dreams, but I have read about ways that do work for other people. Some people keep a dream journal where they right them down as soon as they wake up.

Q2 Artist's Statement

For my collage I wanted to keep it all in the same color scheme of greens and blues. So I flipped through a few magazines
and arranged some picture I cut out by their color. For our fabric drawing assignment, I chose to draw a big sweater because I knew that there would be a lot of folds and overlapping pieces in it that would create shadows. I drew it on a hanger because I felt like there would be more folds and shadows since it is just hanging there and it doesn't have to conform to the shape of anyone's body. For the photo editing assignment, I used one of my favorite pictures that I took for my photography class. I used Photoshop to edit it instead of the website that was provided for us, I hope that's okay. I liked the picture before, but I like the edited version even more because I really like how there is a lot more color in it. Before doing the illustration assignment, I looked up some children's poetry and found one that I liked. The poem I illustrated was called Teddy Bear and it was about a stuffed bear that was self-conscious about his weight. I chose to draw that image as a representation of the poem because it said that when he fell off the ottoman, he could never get back up again.

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 143

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Being Human - Giknis - C on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 1:28 pm

The following passage is what I have imagined was cut from Cormac McCarthy's The Road before the final edition was released. It takes place on page 143, in between, "There was no gun and there wasn't going to be one," and, "When he woke the gaslamp overhead was hissing softly."

As he sat on his bunk, he listened to the high winds that surely signaled the start of another storm. Minutes later the rain began. It created an odd noise. It sounded nothing like the familiar sound of rain on the roof of a house. It sounded more like footsteps on the soil above. Thousands of footsteps hitting the ground over their heads. The sound of thunder was muffled, a thunderhum. It was unsettling but also kind of calming. He liked it, so he sat and listened.

After a while it was difficult to keep his eyes open. He had just begun to drift off, but the repetitive nature of the thunderhum and the rainfeet was interrupted and it caught his attention. Actual footsteps? He walked over the the steps and put his head up to the ceiling. Footsteps. Against his better judgement, he swung open the door.

Is anyone there?

There was movement in the dark. He saw a shadow and a pale face. Their eyes met his. Her eyes met his. Her eyes met his. It was her.

He was drenched to the bone already and re-entered the bunker to grab a tarp and the battery lantern. He decided to wake the boy. He was shaking him.

Your mother.

Now the boy was shaking him.

Papa, wake up.

He jolted upright.

She’s out there. I need to see her.

Papa, there’s no one to see!

Realization struck. The man, embarrassed, said, Go back to bed.

The boy did.

(250 words) (McCarthy-esque words: thunderhum, rainfeet)

This is my rationale, explaining why I made these choices for this project.

In my passage, I wanted to focus on the boy's growth over time and how the man acts in contrast to him. I was really interested in the motif of dreams that McCarthy used and decided to give another peek into the man's dreams. The man is constantly dreaming about his wife so I definitely had to include her in it. This reminded me of the incident with the little boy, on page 85, where the man tried to convince the boy that he was imagining things. I thought it would be interesting to have the tables turned this time and make it so that the man is the one who is convinced there is someone there when he is only dreaming. The man is sleep-talking and his voice startles the boy out of his sleep, so he immediately wakes the man. Once the man realizes that the whole previous ordeal with his wife was a dream, he is embarrassed and tells the boy to go back to bed.

When the boy saw the other little boy the man said, “There’s no one to see,” so I made sure to have the boy say the same exact thing to the man. The man remembers that outburst and is not happy that now he is on the other side of the argument. What makes the man even more embarrassed is that in this case, he was most definitely having a dream whereas the boy very well may have actually seen someone else.

The boy springing right into action and knowing how to handle this situation shows his growth and maturity. This passage also highlights the man’s deteriorating mental state. He said that good dreams are bad news and he has been having so many dreams about his wife that it’s clear he isn’t doing so well. The man’s poor health and state of mind is dangerous to the boy since the man’s judgement is not very reliable.

I placed this passage in this location of the book because I wanted there to be no mention of it when they both wake up again. The man completely brushes that off his shoulder and hopes that the boy has forgotten it too. he doesn’t want the boy to be worried about him or realize how unsettled he was by the dream.

Caitlin's Q1 Art

The style of art that I like to do is very much inspired by my favorite things. This includes music, books, and people who's art I really admire. I just enjoy recreating things that I see everyday in different artistic ways. Two of my favorite mediums to work with are painting and oil pastels.
My ceiling tile is a painting of an album cover by one of my favorite bands, My Chemical Romance. My choice painting/drawings are a painting of another one of my favorite band's logo and a drawing of my favorite musician/author/artist. My jackolantern design is an oil pastel drawing of a character from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Lastly, there is a simple self portrait.

"Princess Jalicia" by Allison and Caitlin

Our website: http://akelly09.wix.com/literature-blog

For our project, we decided to focus on the issue of cultural appropriation on Halloween. The story we created involved a young princess of color whose kingdom is punished by the queen. It is the princess' duty to restore beauty to the kingdom.
The way this is involved with cultural appropriation is that little girls everywhere look up to this character and want to dress up as her for Halloween. But these costumes involve blackface and the trouble that this causes is what our projects explores. Specifically in the form of a blog post and it's comments.

American Samoa is a very small island in the South Pacific that was taken control of by the US. We decided to work with the American Samoa because it is a place I have never previously focused on in school and we were interested in how the US involvement affected the native people.

One of the strongest legacies in the history of the world is that of the Disney empire. Roy and Walt Disney were two very different leaders, but that aside, the legacy is what matters most. The Disney brothers are shining stars within the topic of leadership and legacy.

Book Review: Paper Towns

Posted by Caitlin Keough in English 3 - Rami - D on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 7:07 am

Book Title: Paper Towns

Author: John Green

John Green is an American author who specializes in books for young adults. He has become very successful in the past few years and has the awards and titles to prove it. Two of his most popular books include his debut novel, Looking for Alaska and his most recent book, The Fault in Our Stars. Looking for Alaska won the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature in 2006. When The Fault in Our Stars was released in early 2012 it was at number 1 on The New York Times Bestseller List and was recently turned into a movie which became number 1 in the box office. To top it all off, in 2014 he made it on Time’s 100 Most Influential People List. Aside from all of his literary achievements, he has invented a charity called “Project for Awesome,” launched an event known as “Vidcon” and he and his brother, Hank Green, run a popular Youtube channel.

John’s third book is called Paper Towns and follows around a teenager named Quentin Jacobsen who has always been in love with his neighbor, the mysterious Margo Roth Spiegelman. Quentin, otherwise known as “Q,” has been infatuated with Margo since they were friends as children. But after they found the body of a man who committed suicide in a park they lost touch. Years later when Margo climbs through Q’s window and recruits him as an accomplice in her carefully laid out plan for revenge on her cheating boyfriend, he is shocked but agrees to help.

After a whole night of shenanigans, Quentin is excited to talk to his new friend Margo, but she is no where to be found. Q doubts that she left without an agenda and figures she had to have left some kind of clue. So once he breaks into Margo’s room, clues are exactly what he finds. Clues that give Quentin hope that he might be the one to solve the mystery of Margo Roth Spiegelman.

Something that Quentin finds himself struggling with throughout the whole book is trying to understand Margo and how she works. When Margo initially approaches him at his bedroom window in the middle of the night he is mesmerized. Over the next couple days following Q and Margo’s nighttime adventure and Margo’s disappearance, Q realizes that he knows absolutely nothing about the girl he'd fantasized about since his childhood. He’s only known Margo Roth Spieglman, the most popular, pretty, mysterious girl in school but that’s all anyone knows. Margo herself is an unsolved puzzle. But once Q starts finding all the secret clues she leaves behind he learns more about her which leads him to questioning himself.

Paper Towns has it all, humour, mystery, romance and concepts that many young adults will surely relate to. John Green is known for writing books that showcase a teenage boy who fantasizes over an unattainable, mysterious girl who somehow ends up changing their life. But he creates such interesting, outgoing characters and his writing style is so well thought out, clever, and sometimes even poetic that it doesn’t seem like a corny love story. Something that John Green does really well with is his use of language, he knows exactly how to word things to make everything as believable as possible. The conversations had in the book and the thoughts his characters express make complete sense with the mind of teeangers and that’s why his books are so popular. Teenagers and young adults understand and enjoy it. But don’t let that fool you, I’m sure almost any adult would really enjoy any book written by John Green. I would recommend Paper Towns in particular to anyone who is 13 or older, since it is a book written about a bunch of high school seniors there isn’t much of a filter and some of the things the characters say and/or think might not be what all parents want their kids to be reading about.

I have read two of John Green’s other books aswell, Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars. I finished each of the three books within a very short time period because I couldn’t put them down. I was never bored while reading them and was sucked into the character’s world quickly because John Green’s writing grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. I don’t really have anything bad to say about any of his books except for the fact that I was a little let down by the ending of Paper Towns, not that it was bad I was just left wanting more.

All in all, John Green is a very talented author and the popularity surrounding his books is for good reason. You should definitely give at least one of them a read because you won’t be disappointed.

For my creative portion of the project, I drew the route the characters took to New York from Florida to find their friend Margo. A lot of interesting things happen to them on the way so I drew pictures to represent them along their route and visualized their whole journey. I thought that this part of the book, part 3, was very important along with it being my favorite part and I wanted to incorporate it into my creative response.

My Science Fair Project

Inquiry: I wanted to learn about how stain removers work and how successful they are. I also wanted to find out what makes permanent markers permanent.
Research: I gathered my information by testing my experiment in the lab to get my results. I also did research to figure out the science behind. I organized my info in a chart and a graph.
Collaboration: I was a part of a community because I had help from my teacher and classmates with making and preforming my project. Also I presented to a bunch of other people during the Science Fair.
Presentation: My presentation strategy was basically me making up a script in my head and I rehearsed what I was going to say about my project.
Reflection: If I was to do somethings about my project differently I would add more trials with different kinds of stains. I would also change the colors of sharpies I used because I think that might have messed up my results. I would do more research for the science behind too because I found that part interesting.

Caitlin's Final Portfolio

Screen Shot 2014-06-11 at 9.40.53 AM

Understanding world history involves having knowledge on many other subjects and being able to utilize other tools. I realized this throughout our world history course this year. We used a lot of unique sources and creative projects to learn and we focused on many different time periods, including things happening in the present day.

Something I realized throughout the year is that change does not come easily and it takes hard work. Most communities are divided by social classes and once your class is decided it is extremely hard to change. If your class depends on your income, it’s possible to change your social status but it takes a lot of work. The easiest solution is to get a new job or to get a promotion if you already have a job. When you get more money you can possibly move away from the poverty. But it takes a long time to save up enough and so much more goes into the process of making a change. In a journal entry of mine I wrote, “I don't think my hands are clean and I don't think anyone else's are either. It is practically impossible to find "clean" and responsibly made clothing these days." It’s hard to know what stores sell responsibly made clothing and those clothes are always more expensive. A lot of people try to have a smaller environmental footprint but a lot of times it’s difficult because price and location matter so clothing made with sweat shops is still bought more often than not. Another instance where change is hard to make is in schools. In class we had a discussion on women’s roles in science. A quote of mine is, "Women's roles in science have changed. It is more common to see a woman involved in science, whether she is a scientist or a science teacher. But woman scientists in the past are still not taught in schools nearly as much as men. Women who have made big discoveries or invented something important are not recognized. Women now have more rights but the fact that women were not recognized back then is still not recognized now." The majority of scientists taught in history are men and very few women are recognized for their discoveries. It’s always possible to make changes to anything but it is very difficult and that remains true now as it did thousands of years ago.

Social media aids in the understanding of historical and current events. In one of my past journals our question was “How would you do about deciding what topics/units to include in a world history class?” I replied with, “I think you should see what’s going on in the world because if it’s coming up in social media more people will be able to make connections to it.” At the beginning of this course I figured we would focus fully on events in the past. But multiple times during the year we discussed current events individually or we connected them to the history lesson we were learning. One of the benchmark projects we did during the year was a digital story that asked a question or explained a certain aspect surrounding revolutions. I made my video explain how a successful revolution is made and one of the most important tools to use while doing that is social media. “Social media allows people who are interested in the cause to make a difference even if they live halfway around the world and can’t physically participate.” Ideas and events spread so much faster or the internet and it’s so easy for anyone in the world to support a cause. The same thing goes for religion. A unit it our history class was on religion and a quote of mine from a discussion we had it, "I think religion is a worldwide similarity. Even if you don't follow any certain religion you still have your own beliefs, which is what religions is basically made up of." No matter the beliefs you have, someone living somewhere in the world probably shares the same idea as you. So many stereotypes and facts about religion are shared around on the internet and it’s hard to believe that religions created so long ago became so successful without the internet. Our lives revolve around the internet and social media is how most people find out what’s going on in the world and also what has happened in history.

Revolution Guidebook Project

Posted by Caitlin Keough in World History - Block - B on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 6:30 pm

History Digital Story from Caitlin Keough on Vimeo.

This unit we learned all about revolutions. Half of our unit was more so about historical revolutions. We researched and role-played about the French Revolution and how it started and the opinions of people in it. Through this research we figured out what a revolution is made up of and what needs to happen to keep it going. Our class also learned about the Haitian Revolution and what it had to do to with the French Revolution.

The second half of our unit was surrounding a lot of movements going on right now in the Middle East. Since we learned about revolutions in different time periods, we also investigated how certain aspects of revolutions have changed and might have been made easier or harder to accomplish.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Caitlin Keough in World History - Block - B on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 5:49 pm
Part 1:

This unit we learned all about the Keystone XL Pipeline and we learned the pros and cons of it, regarding the environment, the people, and the economics. The pipeline is proposed to start in Hardisty, Alberta in Canada and will end around Steele City, Nebraska. It would transport about 830,000 barrels of Tar Sands oil a day. There are so many opinions out there surrounding this topic which we explored a lot of, and then they helped us write monologues about the pipeline project.

Part 2:

- It will be 1,179 miles long

(About The Project, TransCanada)

- Pipeline will have a diameter of 36 inches

(About The Project, TransCanada)

- The tar sands oil is under the very large Boreal forest in Alberta.

(Keystone XL Pipeline, Friends of the Earth)

- it would result in climate-damaging emissions equal to putting more than 5.6 million new cars on the roads in the U.S.

(Keystone XL Pipeline, Friends of the Earth)

- It will require 9,000 American workers.

(Jobs and Economic Benefits, TransCanada)

Part 3:

Daddy’s Job

(Daughter is at school, Dad is picking her up.)

Bye, Samantha! Have a fun weekend! Hey Dad. Yeah, Mom took me to get my haircut on wednesday. Thanks. School was fun. Mmmhhm. What’s that smell? Is something wrong with the car? Oh. What do you even do at work? Well, then why does Mommy hate what you do so much? Why couldn’t you give it up for her? (Pause) Is it because of this nice car? (Pause) Ice cream? Um. No, I think I just wanna go home and play with Sandy. Grandma’s... again? I don’t wanna! (Whines) Why are there so many meetings? I never get to play with you anymore. Yeah, I like all my toys but I wanna play with you. A big project? What kind of project? Pipeline? What’s tha… 1000 miles!? Well, that does sound pretty important I guess. But I still don’t get why Mommy doesn’t like it. Is it cuz the smell. It is pretty gross. Do ya want me to ask her? I… oh sorry. Ok, well what time are you going to pick me up tonight? I’m sleeping over? I don’t have any clothes or pajamas! And I got school tomorrow! Can’t you just take a day off for once? (Whispers) Well is it really that important? (Pause) Oh, I didn’t say anything. I’ll see you tomorrow then. Bye Daddy. (Pause) Hi Grandma. Yeah, his dumb job. I know.

Family First

(Leaving house)

See ya later, honey! Bye kiddos! Love you, too. Yup, Daddy’s gonna bring in the big bucks! Haha! You guys be good to your Momma, alright. Ahh, ok.

(Walks out the door, walks to car) (Sighs)

(Arrives at work) Hey guys. What’s up? We going back to the James’ house today? Alright. What are we doing there, just putting down some sod right? (Sighs) Landscaping is hard work, men. Wish it paid a bit better though, am I right? (Pause) What about the Daytona’s? Wait, what? Why? Sold half their land? To who? What is TransCanada? A pipeline? Over a thousand miles?! That’s ridiculous! Are we really that desperate? What’s that gonna mean for all our customers? Anybody else sold their land? Really? Aw man. Wonder how much they gave ‘em for that piece of land. They wanna make a deal with me? They can have my 2x2 shed. Haha, yeah! Man, I really need this job though. Only source of income for my family. My wife got the kids to take care of while I’m gone and on top of that she’s thinking of going back to school! I need this! (Pause) Maybe this big old company will hire me. I’ll help with this pipeline thing! Destroying the environment? Oh, please! Isn’t everything doing that these days? I gotta keep my family alive. That’s more important to me! Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Yeah, I know. Alright. Let’s get going.

Biased Boss

(Walks into boss’ office)

Mornin’ Mr. Clark! How are you doing, this fine morning? (Begins to sweep the floors of the office) Aw man, what’s bugging ya? Ah, the pipeline XL? You mind telling me more about this thing? My co-workers have been telling me bit by bit of what they are all hearing, but I don’t got the whole story yet. Course, I’ll keep cleaning while you talk! You’re the boss! Steele City? Now, where is that? Nebraska? Woah! Any idea how far that is? Woah, what’s that number again? I wanna write that down and tell my husband. He won’t believe this! 1,179 miles you said it was? That sure is incredible, sir! And when is this starting? Ohh, Obama’s a good man, he will never be able to turn down something like this! Sounds great! I’m super excited to see how this goes! (Finishes up cleaning the floors) Alright, Mr. Clark it was nice talking to you. It’s my lunch break now. I’ll see you around, have a good day! (Picks up supplies and walks out of the office) (Hovers outside the office for a second and pops her head back in) One last question Mr. Clark, good, old Mother Nature won’t be harmed in any of this, right? You know I love my trees and fresh air, ha! Nothing to worry about? Alright! I’m getting more and more excited! Bye now! (Walks to locker rooms) (Puts stuff away, grabs lunch and bag) (Walks outside and sits on a bench) (Pulls out phone and searches “Keystone Pipeline XL”) “Say No to Keystone Pipeline?” Hate articles already, gosh! (Pause) (Reads article a little) This oil is under a forest? That don’t sound very good. Hmmm. This plan doesn’t really sound as peachy as I thought it was before. (Continues reading)

Element Prints Project

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:48 am
Inquiry: I had to use inquiry because I had to find things out about my element that I didn't know. I also had to use it when I was making my prints and matting them because I had never done it before.

Research: I had to use research a lot in the beginning of the project. I had to do a lot of research to figure out which things copper was related to to use in my three drawing ideas.

Collaboration: I collaborated with classmates a lot in this project. At times I had trouble or someone else had trouble with something so to figure it out we collaborated a little.

Presentation: I'm pretty sure these prints will be posted around the school somewhere. I had to make them look nice and look presentable so I would be proud to see mine on the wall somewhere.

Reflection: By answering these questions I am reflecting. Also I made a few mistakes in the process of printing and matting and I reflected what I did wrong.

    A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is basically just the space in between whatever the object is that is not the object itself. When you draw the negative space, the thing you are drawing will appear.

    B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?

I found in my cutout by cutting around the template with the paper behind it. Once I had all the pieces cut, it was easy to find the negative space and make the bird's shape. I found the negative space in my still life drawing by looking at the object I was drawing and one by one drawing the spaces in between it.

    C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see in negative space because they can make the drawing more detailed and it will look better/more realistic.

    D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Seeing in negative space does enhance drawings because it makes the details stand out and overall it makes the picture more interesting than if it was drawn normally.

I made this video to raise awareness and to fight animal abuse. So much of these forms of animal abuse are present in the world and I think it is a pretty big issue.

Final Perspective Drawing Green 2013 Perspective

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 9:41 pm
One thing that I learned and did not know before was everything about the vanishing point and how that works. I had never known that was the way to draw pictures like this, and I thought you just drew it by guessing and what you see. Learning this make my drawings better because it makes them more realistic and precise. If I did the assignment again, something I would do differently is probably how I made my ceiling and floor because I had a hard time doing those parts and making the helper line. So I think I would have used a better method to do that then what I did. If someone was drawing their first one point perspective drawing, the advice I would give them is to take their time and to not be afraid to mess up because they will almost never get it right the first time. The resource that helped me the most was the slideshow that was on moodle. It especially helped me in the beginning because I was so confused and didn't know how to start, but that led me in the right direction.

¡Me encanta SLA!

Media Fluency- Caitlin Keough

Posted by Caitlin Keough in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 10:10 am
Recently, we have been learning how to make a professional slideI made the slide look like that because I like how simple it looks and I like the colors. Something that influenced my design making is my favorite colors and "glance media." My favorite color is blue and I liked the way it looked with the brown. I made it an acrostic poem because its easy to read and understand and its simple, and that follows the "glance media" guideline because it has all you need to know about me and that's all it needs.
Tech slide
When I presented, I realized that I needed to fix my text and add pictures. My text was out of line, so I made sure I fixed that. I also had too much empty space on my first slide so I added a couple pictures. I learned some more about how your eye looks at certain things first and how it easily notices little differences throughout the whole slide. Knowing that, I made sure all my pictures and text were aligned right and that everything was even.

On my L.A.N., I have two iPhones, an iPod, two laptops, two computers, a printer, and a router. I did have an OMG moment, it was mostly everything I learned about the cables. I have never understood anything about that and I learned more about them. I'd tell people about having an ISP or Home network that it is easier because you can do more at your house but it can be harder when dealing with the provider and money.

¡Hola, guapa!: lunes to domingo

Some other spanish words that are helpful to know are the days of the week or los días de la semana.
If you want to aks someone what day it is, you would say "¿Qué día es hoy?".
If you want to hear how to pronounce the days of the week, click here.

Remember!
In spanish, the days of the week are NOT capitalized!

Below is a chart that shows the days of the week in english and in spanish.
