Capstone Process Paper

For my capstone, I decided to work closely with 7th and 8th graders at Independence Charter School to help them create better National History Day Projects. Originally this was not my idea. My first idea was to create a class/club centered on what the children wanted to learn. I thought that this idea was perfect since it fitted perfect with what I wanted to be when I was older: a teacher. Here I could put myself into a position much like a teacher, while also engages the kids I worked with because they would learning about things they enjoyed like: sports, videos games, books, etc. After discussing the original idea with my mentor, we realized how cumbersome of a project that would be. With a project like that, I’d completely dependent on what the students wanted to learn. If they weren’t putting in any effort, I’d be out of a capstone. I would also be dedicating too much time to creating projects/lesson plans for the class every week. After discussing alternatives, we decided that I would help on existing process going on at the school: National History Day. This was definitely a better idea for me because I still got to be in a teacher-like position while having a better focus on my capstone. During the process of about 3-4 months, I learned how my capstone relates to the five core values.

With inquiry the students and myself had two major questions above our heads: “How do our NHD topics relate to the current theme of 2013?” and “If not, how can change our ideas so that they fit into this year’s topic?” Before getting into any serious work with any of the students I’d ask the kids to explain their theme and overall project in a couple sentences. This way the students can see for themselves whether they have a good idea on their hands instead of just me telling them. For research, I would try to help the students by introducing resources that can possibly collect better sources for the kids. Being that they are 7th and 8th graders, they collect almost that looks like a credible source. That’s where collaboration comes in. I’d be there to help distinguish between what’s “good” source and what’s a “bad” source. How something from a random website on the Internet is definitely less effective source that a source from something like an accredited newspaper. In addition to that, I also helped by showing the differences between primary and secondary sources. For many of them, it’s their first introduction into dealing with primary and secondary sources. Using my four years at SLA, I tried to demonstrate more effective ways of presentation a final product. I tried to show the students I worked with the idea of CARP (Contrast-Alignment- Repetition-Proximity), something we always try to implement in our final products at SLA.

The process of my capstone first began when I pay visit to some the students while they were in school. As introduced myself as an alumni of Independence Charter School and that I was once in their position with NHD projects. I told them about my experiences with the National History Day competition and even how my years at SLA have made much more proficient in creating projects. I tried not to come off as too demanding and that I was resource that they had the choice of using. When my mentor compiled as list of groups that wanted to work with me, it then transformed to weekly sessions where I would work with the groups. Although I was very optimistic about the process, I began to notice major issues even after the first meeting. I was just one person in a room full of kids that wanted my help. I quickly realized that I had to divide my attention between six different groups in only a relative short amount of time. Thankfully, my mentor was there to help me out. After one our meetings we decided that I would only work groups who were really invested in the process, but even that had problems. Every week I’d be meeting with a new group so there would be a constant dialogue between the students and myself. Even when I could meet with a group on a consistent basis, these groups already knew what they were doing. I couldn’t really add anything to the overall project. Also a lot of the time, I felt that input wasn’t even being taken into account. I would suggest something to a group and they either completely ignored it or just do it without even considering how it might affect their project.

I’m certainly proud of the fact that I stay with something like this. I was always ready to work with the groups even when it hindered my normal senior workload (benchmarks, projects). I also got to experience what a lot of teachers deal with on a daily basis. Most teachers, especially ones that teach grade school work with kids that are scatterbrained and don’t necessarily pay attention all the time. It’s certainly a difficult thing to deal with that I have to take into consideration when I become a teacher. If I could do this capstone all over again, I’d certainly recruit other people to also work with me so I wouldn’t be dividing my attention amongst so many different groups. I believe that SLA is better place for letting me attend because this is where I got to use all the things I learned in middle school and actually apply them to tangible and worthwhile things. I also believed it’s a better place because I became more invested in global issues and SLA has motivated me to become a much more globally minded citizen.

Q4 Globalization Benchmark Rharris

Posted by Ryan Harris in Globalization - Herman on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 12:14 am
Link to my final product: http://aninvisiblepeople.weebly.com/

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My topic of choice for this benchmark is the topic of statelessness. The way I believe statelessness relates globalization lies directly in the name. People who are statelessness belong to no one. They can’t get jobs, health insurance, or citizenship with the worst part being the countries that live won’t grant it to them. Since countries don’t recognize them as citizens, their welfare is completely irrelevant to the global world. They aren’t granted basic human rights that we, as citizens in a global community, try to uphold. Also a lot of the time with stateless people, their culture is also at stake. The government, or anyone for that matter, has the ability to do literally whatever they want to stateless people because they belong to no one. Because of this, many stateless people fall into human trafficking, another serious issue. Granted, many countries have been making advances to help these people regain citizenship but one thing I was thinking of covering is when different cultures assimilate into other cultures. Is their culture also being lost when they gain these basic human rights through gaining a nationality? Something like statelessness can easily been fixed but the reason it hasn’t been is because many countries don’t know how to deal with something like statelessness. The majority of people can’t even really comprehend what it’s like to be stateless because they’re used to the idea that someone born somewhere are always considered a citizen. I think that in order for statelessness to cease to be an issue, countries must first recognize that these people are being greatly discriminated against and then development laws that both ensure a citizenship and also ensure the protection of their basic human rights.

Mentor: Chris White Social Studies Teacher at Independence Charter School

At first, my capstone was going to be instructing my own class at my old middle school: Independence Charter School. After some consulting with my mentor, we decided to consolidate the idea to focus on National History Day and helping the students make even better projects. I began my capstone by first introducing myself to the students, showing them that I was a student who was well-versed in these projects. My capstone then divulged into weekly meetings with 7th and 8th graders doing things like discussing their ideas, going over sources, discussing their projects, etc. Throughout the process I certainly felt that my capstone could have been better, but after finishing I learned a few important things about working with kids. First of all, I can try to put forth myself as a useful source for the kids but if their not going to utilize that source that's that. I can't do the project for them but at the same time I to do something for them. Another thing I learned was that trying to maintain the focus of kids is very difficult job. One thing I definitely struggled with was trying to have a productive conversation with the kids. Whenever I'd suggest they would give opinion and sort of blankly accept my advice. All in all, even though I felt my capstone could have been better, I still learn a lot from it.

"Mind of State" by Ryan Harris & Sam Lovett-Perkins

Posted by Ryan Harris in Sexuality and Society in Literature - Dunn on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 8:38 am
Reflection:

For this creative English project, Sam and I decided to create a playbill, along with an accompanying scene from the “play” to demonstrate our theme of “Freedom at the cost of true self”. To start off, our play is set in an alternate dystopian universe within a society where all of its members are given role that to fulfill from birth. They abides by this standard so much that, its citizens aren’t even given birth names. Citizens are solely referred to by their occupation. Our main character, follow this with the name “Accountant #56780” who represents individualism and opposition to conformity. In our “play” he decides that he’s had enough with blindly fulfilling his occupation, and not getting anything out of life. This parallels the character of Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. Hester herself was an outcast within the Puritan Boston community doing something that she felt was the right thing. Within the book, her reason for being out casted was because of her having an illegitimate children and not revealing the father. This is similar to our character “Accountant #56780”, because he also took a stand, went against societal norms and did what he wanted, not letting the society’s judgment effect him. The dialogue represents the scene where “Accountant #56780” is finally standing up to his society, represented by another character: “The Machine” We used the playbill to give detailed information on our play, as well as including ads which also tied to our theme of “Freedom at the cost of true self”.

My responsibility in the project lied within creating the dialogue, as well as the cover photo of our playbill. The dialogue was the first thing I created for our project. Using Sam’s idea for a play set in a dystopian society, I wanted to create a scene where our character could demonstrate his emotions and the audience gets to see his passion for individualism. The actual process of writing the dialogue was pretty exciting. While writing, I had already planned out what the scene would look/sound like. It was really amazing to just get my ideas down, and be able to turn them into an interesting performance. One problem I did come across was creating an ending to our scene. I had this great dialogue but didn’t want the ending to be weak. Thankfully having my partner, we were able to easily come up with a strong ending. Next, the cover photo was kind of an opposite experience. While I still had a good idea of what I wanted the photo to look like, actually drawing it was an ordeal. Since I hadn’t actively drawn anything for the past 3 years, I was really rusty on my skills. All in all, the process took a good 4 ½ hours, but I do feel really good about my final product.

I feel that Sam and I could have done a lot better on the final performance. I definitely wanted to incorporate costumes for us, because I feel like it would just look a lot more professional. I also felt that we could have utilized or time for things like making a more flushed out dialogue and developing costumes. Certainly if we had more time, my partner and myself would expand on our final project.

What if? BM - Ryan Harris

Alternate History:Hitler

My point of divergence was having Hitler dying from injuries he sustained in WW1 instead of losing a testicle like he actually did. The way I went about made the world change and excluded many of the really important events of the 1930-1940s. With Hitler gone, the Nazi Party never gains much power but instead the former central power countries (Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey) decide since they've lost so much as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, they should form a new empire with what they have. In doing this, the new empire is able to combine their remaining militaries and begin to take back the countries created from that said treaty. Eventually they conquer all of Europe and then the US. They were able to do this because the U.S. was in a state of turmoil because The Great Depression. Concerning America, any form of independence is lost once again, and America falls under another country's rule, much like the 1700's. A european influence is much more profound in present-day America.

I really did enjoy this project but at the same it was very stressful for me at certain points. Finding and creating the sources was fairly easy but putting them all together into a coherent project was really difficult. I felt like I was always leaving out a portion of history that seem vital to my project. Although on the other hand, I got to explore the causes of WW1, something I didn't really know. I learned that the catalyst for WW1 was assassination of the prince of the Austria-Hungary Empire: Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian Slavic Nationalist Gavrilo Princip. His death caused the empire of Austria-Hungary to declared was on Serbia, sparking WW1. It certainly shows that an individual's actions can effect history greatly. He didn't suspect Austria-Hungary to start an all out war, he simply doing what he felt his people needed. With the central powers combined they had no problems taking out defenseless countries.

I feel like this project could be really interesting if the scope of what 2011 would be like was a lot more global. I feel like if we didn't have to connect it back to America we can show how the entire world has been affected as well. If I were given the chance to re-do this project, I definitely would make my final product a lot more visual and interactive. I'd try to immerse the person looking at it into the history was created.

Physics of Star Wars - Ryan Harris

My 10% project topic was the physics of Star Wars and more specifically The Force and Force Push/Pull. The thing that really interested was how The Force relates to gravitational fields. The way I interpreted it was that Jedi (those most connected to The Force), have the ability to manipulate gravitational fields to their own bidding. This allows things like levitation and the ability known as Force Push/Pull. This is all allowed by the will on the Midi-Chlorians who are the physical representation of The Force.

Summer Reading Recommendation: Ryan Harris

The book I'm doing to recommend is The Absolutely True Story of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. I believe it's perfect for children between my age range and about 14. While it does contain use of profanity and sexual innuendo, it fits pretty with the story of a normal-teenage boy. This is how all normal teenage boys act, with regards to girls, friends, teachers, and even surprisingly masturbation. It's a worthwhile read.

Major Understanding:

The basic major understanding of atoms are that they composed virtually everything in the universe. Everything is composed of atoms, from your mom, to your dad and even something huge like the Sun is composed of atoms. Without the basic structure of atoms, mass, and objects with really large masses couldn't exist. Also with things such as ionic and covalent bonds give way to much more complex structure and organisms like humans, and the Sun.

"El Bola" - Correo Electronico

Posted by Ryan Harris in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, April 9, 2012 at 7:59 am

:Screen Shot 2012-04-09 at 7.22.03 AM.png

Love Canal - Ryan H.,Winston W.,Stephen H.

Posted by Ryan Harris in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 1:25 pm
What went well?
- Our collaboration and process went well, as we all collaborated to present different data in the inforgraphic. It was also very easy to decide on how we were going to present the information. There were really no conflicts with any of the group members.
What did not?
- Our infographic could have had a better design, our picture got across but we could have expand the infographic with additional picture and text.
What would you do differently next time?
- Try to focus on a different aspect of the Love Canal Accident.
Which of these areas did you excel in? Which were not so well represented? Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

- One thing I think we should have done better was include more information about the destruction. We focused more on the things that happened to the people, but some information about the disaster probably would have made this better.

Winston Wright & Ryan Harris - "The Space Race"

Posted by Ryan Harris in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 9:56 am
For the 3rd quarter benchmark, we chose to make a documentary on the Space Race of the 1960s and the reformation ,revolution, and reaction of the American people during this time in history. Regarding the literal scientific evolution of humanity, the Space Race was vital in propelling humanity into the future. In being a sci-fi fan/aspiring scientist myself, I would constantly here the scientific community talk about the good ole’ days of the 1960s when everyone cared about space. During the decade, the American people were immersed in a national consciousness regarding beating the USSR to space. It was very easy to see how the Space Race changed the United States. It gave the citizens of the U.S things to dream about, and offered new insight on how science and mathematics can be looked at upon as a positive in schools. We did not include this in our documentary, but the mass production of personal computers really did diminish the love for search and discovery in the United States. Most scientist agree that after the cancellation of the Apollo missions ,and the progression of American life after 1970 came the true end of science in space.

Ryan Harris Business Unit Reflection

Posted by Ryan Harris in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 7:10 am

Monologue Series

Theodore Roosevelt

During my presidency I noticed something that I couldn’t quite understand. I noticed a massive range of businesses who controlled such a high quantity of manufacturing from things like railroads, oil, and even meat. With meat, for example, I sent out a friend of mine to a meat packing industry. His response letter back painted a horrible picture. He saw that dead animals thrown aside and lighting conditions were terrible. Yet with these terrible conditions, the investors of these companies are doing extremely well. This needed to be changed, I couldn’t outright eliminate these companies, but instead control their actions. These monopolies can’t be good for America. In reaction to that, I’ve enlisted many antitrust acts to break up these giant superpowers. A notable one was the Standard Oil Trust. We were able separate the conglomerate that was Standard Oil, into much small companies. This way there was no longer one massive force controlling simply one object.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

During my presidency our country was one of its worst points: The Great Depression. The economy was downtrodden and jobs for the average American was an adventure in  and of itself. So when I became president I proposed a “New Deal” of sorts for my fellow American citizens. First I started the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration to somehow bring life into America and get this economy back to what it was. But that wasn’t enough to save the American people from where they were. I also created the Wagner Act and Fair Labor Standards Act to instill more organized labor into America with things like minimum wage.

Barack Obama

In presidency, I noticed that American companies have made a major mistake. In recent years, they’ve outsourced their work to foreign countries such as China. Well why? Well I think we’ve all figured out by now, it’s simply because it is cheaper to give the jobs to foreigners who well work for much cheaper. This needs to stop. Today in America, Americans are struggling to find jobs in a economy trying to come out of a recession. To solve I propose this to American companies who outsource, bring the jobs back to America! American companies should have American workers shouldn’t they? Instead of focusing more on a profit, American companies should focus on advancing the economy back to it’s majesty. Outsourcing isn’t going to be thing that gets America out of this recession.

Reflection

1. Explain your choice and presentation format.

- I chose a monologue format because I was working alone and wanted to just represent myself as the three presidents in a sort sequential order.

2. Answer essential question.

- I think it takes a serious injustice in the eyes of the individual in to create lasting change within a system. When someone as powerful as the president himself sees great injustices, he has everything in his powerful to see this change come through.

"Perfection"

Posted by Ryan Harris in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 11:59 am

July 18, 2030.

I’ve finally found it. I’ve found the perfect specimen, who will prove perfect for my creation. Intelligence, average height, devoid of any mental or physical defects, amongst other things. She also shares my dream, the dream of creating the perfect human. Someone devoid of all frivolous emotions such as: jealously, anger, happiness, lust, or sadness. It shall only think through rational thought and rational thought only. It shall be selfless, having no need for such irrelevant things like money or wealth. Too many people of the present are fueled by their emotions and their own selfish needs. Countries going to war because of something like oil? That’s preposterous. How can thousands of lives be lost in a meaningless war just so I can fill my gas tank? Idiots! All of them. We humans are imperfect by nature, too controlled by own emotions. Even as I write this, I’m becoming enraged at the current state of the so-called “human race”. My anger solves nothing, anger begets nothing. Nothing but violence and more suffering. I will create the catalysts for the new world; they will be perfection, perfection that will breed more perfection. I will God and they shall be my Adam and Eve.

September 24, 2042.

I’ve done it. After years upon years they are ready. But not now. I can’t let them go out into the world now. The world isn’t ready for them, it’s full too much of imperfection. I have a better solution, I shall place them in an remote area, we were they shall begin the new world there. This way they won’t have any interaction with those of imperfect nature, and thus taint they’re imperfection. Yes, this is what I shall do. But there is one last thing to do. I must take my own life. I must do this, because I am imperfect. I exist as the very my creation intend to rid of. If I’m to see my dream come to true fruition, ALL imperfection shall be gone.

Posted by Ryan Harris in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 9:20 am

Posted by Ryan Harris in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 9:44 am

Ryan Harris - Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Ryan Harris in American History - Laufenberg on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 7:41 am
Rebuttal Paper

In our campaign to propose this new amendment, we do see where those against it might rebuttal. These arguments directly challenging the mental capabilities of many 16 year olds. Let’s look at the logistics of it. A great majority, if not all, 16 year olds live with their parents. In fact they’re mostly still dependent on their parents. Sure 16 year olds may be able to think for themselves, but don’t have the abilities to be truly self-sufficient. There’s also the responsibility of 16 years olds. While their parents may trust them smaller tasks like watch a their sibling or taking out the trash, one would never give a space of power to a child. They wouldn’t even know where to begin. Voting is a prime example of that; children don’t know the first thing about voting and all that goes on behind the scenes. Also, 16 year olds have many other rights such as the right to drop out of school or in some other states, the right to marry and have sex. (Debate: Lowering the Voting Age to 16). While these are freedoms they can choose express at any time, people against lowering the voting age would response to this: “Just because they have those rights doesn’t mean they should express them.” Debatepedia’s article – “Debate: Lowering the voting age to 16” states: “If all 16 year olds left home at 16 and started families it would be considered a disaster.” Countries much like America save things like drinking alcohol, serving in a military, and especially voting too much higher ages. The streets would be full of drunk and pregnant teens. In fact in the article: “Lower the Voting Age to 16: Pros and Cons” from International Business Times talking about the effects of lowering in voting in other countries. While countries such as Austria, Nicaragua, Brazil, and Ecuador have been successful in lowering the voting age, The U.S. and the U.K. alike have failed in such a process. Now let’s look into other things that could occur if America were to lowering its voting age. If we are to lowering the voting to 16, many states could also advocate lowering the criminal responsibility and consent ages to fit with the lowering voting age. What this basically boils down to is since you have to power to vote like the adults before you, one should be considered an adult as well. So, when you are convicted of a crime, even a smaller crime (theft) for example, instead of being tried a minor you immediately be tried as an adult. What the article states about age of consent is: “The issue of consent is particularly important because it extends beyond consensual sex; in prostitution and rape allegations, if sexual contact is proven and the victim is a minor, the perpetrator is automatically guilty on statutory rape.” ("Lower the Voting Age to 16: Pros and Cons). What this means is if the age were to be lower, the said perpetrator would have to go through a full rape trial instead. Another reason people are against lowering the voting age is because they believe that it won’t solve the problem of voter turnout. A plus of lowering the age is the possibility of increasing current voter turnout. But that’s all it really is, a possibility. ("Voting Age, Lowering: Debatabase”). As it stands, in America, voting is a choice. If you don’t want to vote, you don’t have to. Now considering 16 year olds tend to be more involved in their own problems rather than what is occurring across the country, they would most likely be the tiny percentage of people who would attend the polls. In regards to voter turnout is the political knowledge that many 16 year olds have. For the most part, that knowledge is little to nonexistent on a deeper level. Idebate.org shows how lowering the voting age can be very dangerous. It states that 16 year olds could use their voting power very naively, only voting for the candidate they think is cool or that supports a single issue that care about, not looking at the full picture. ("Debate: Lowering the Voting Age to 16"). The 16 year olds of the present are more concerned with things like instant gratification and getting/fixing something with the least amount of effort. The problem with that is it can create the younger voters into very big swing voters. Say one candidate offers to greatly increase curfew for those 16-17, but another offers to clean up the streets, teens may most likely vote for the first guy because they feel that issue he’s addressing directly effects them, so they care more. But say the second candidate offers to give free cars to all 16-17 year olds with permits; they instantly change their opinion to the second candidate because they’re getting free stuff. This can prove extremely dangerous in America. If this were to happen, America as a whole could potentially be electing unfit people to run our country. This is because the demographic of 16-18 years old is just so huge, if they all vote it could easily outclass all the adults voting, leaving the opinions nearly nullified. The adults of America already have a hard enough time deciding whom to vote for and don’t need ignorant teenagers possibly skewing the polls to an inadequate candidate. Also many teenagers tend to go against the popular consensus just for the sake of being rebellious. Something like is the very last we need at the polls. For example, there are two candidates: one obviously for the job and one obviously not for the job. Where vast majorities of people agree with the first candidate and they see that he/she is out best interests, there’s always going to those teenagers who are against the “status quo”. They’ll simply vote for the second candidate really just because, completely and utterly ignorant to their politics. And finally there’s the viewpoint of not all ages groups are affected by things the government tries to pass. Things like healthcare and social security are things that children should know about but it’s certainly not something that they should be worrying about. Things like that are handled by the parents or guardians, and for the most past when parents vote, they take their entire family into consideration. ("Voting Age, Lowering: Debatabase”)

Reflection Questions:

·       How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?

- We figured we should attack a subject that would directly affect us, that being letting 16 year-olds vote. While the object topics are just as important, we felt(or least I did) a more personal connection to the project.

·       11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?

- The role of the individual can be two things in my opinion: either create change or deter it. For nearly ever individual trying to make change for the better, there are most likely just as many individuals trying to stop that change.

·       How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?

-  I know so much more than I did before. I never knew that this is so involved with more than just the presidential candidates on the ballot. I feel like if I’m ever going to vote I’ve got to know my stuff.

·       How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?

- We decided to go to the audience we are trying to help, teenagers like us. Rather just saying all the positives of letting us vote, let’s see how they’d feel about it.

La Mantis Tranquila por Ryan Harris

Posted by Ryan Harris in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:24 am

In this project we first wrote essays talking about ourselves. We talked about things more obvious like our name, style, or personality and also went into more interpersonal things like our political views or religious views. The purpose of this project was for us to get to know another culture, through the creation of masks and writing essays. In my opinion I think the significance of the masks are to give a physical representation of how the person making it may portray themselves. To some people they may look like random shapes and colors but they have some personal relationship to the mask maker. My mask design is praying mantis because they're really tall and I just think they look really cool. I made the mantis blue because I see blue as a really tranquil and relaxing color, which is the type of person I see myself as.

Finalmente, no me gusta mi familia a veces.

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

Posted by Ryan Harris in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 10:05 am
Project --> http://www.flickr.com/photos/46333332@N03/6166605593/in/photostream

I think the thing that really surprised me was all the data before The Civil War. I knew about events before that time but as far as immigration goes, I didn't know a thing. What seemed sort of obvious to me as the huge decline in immigration during the time of The Great Depression. When I saw that I thought of back then and how it greatly difficult for people living here to find jobs, let alone someone how had immigrated. Yet, one thing I discovered that also impacted that great decline were the Quota Acts of the 1920s. These greatly limited and discriminated against nearly anyone trying to enter the U.S. My group at first wanted to try something with Prezi and we had something going but we found that we were taking too long to get something off the ground so we decided to go with a graphic instead. But as we were working on the graphic, I thought of using Minecraft to have a even better visual interpretation. But we soon realized that this was greatly time consuming and just stuck to our guns. I think the most challenging part was trying to incorporate the dates because sometimes, at least based on our research, the immigration had sort flatten out. If we had more time I'd would surely go for the minecraft idea, because I think that would have been a really creative way to display the data.

Where I'm From

Posted by Ryan Harris in English 3 - Rami on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 1:41 pm
I’m from waking up at 5:50 wondering “Where the time go?”

From 40+ growing exponentially it seems

Family I mean

From people I seem to contrast drastically

Where I’m may not say much,

To my aunt’s got a whole novel, and then some

I’m from my grandparents who lived nearly a century

Who seem to have left behind ever more than they thought they would

I’m arguing about who would kill who: “Batman or Goku?”

Not realizing, better yet, not caring we’ve got work to do.

I’m from walking in back, because apparently I walk too slow.

“And we’re in the back AGAIN.” Stephen says.

Making jokes at the people in front,

They know we’re talking about them, but that’s the fun right?

I’m from never getting any work, when my friends are around

I’m from a point in which I thought I couldn’t escape

Told I was too quiet, or stupid

Second I open my mouth: “Wow he’s really smart!”

Really? I didn’t know.

Sorry I wasn’t born with the size of a dart

I’m from straight D’s to straight A’s

Haha, I lie, there may be few B’s in there

I’m from seeing my friends all set on their careers and life choices

But all I want is to experience everything

Visit everywhere, do everything

Well, not everything but you know what I mean

I’m from me, where are you from?

My Other Half

Ryan Harris

English E

“My Other Half”

Personally, I have different languages for the various aspects of my life. In my life I tend to keep the way I act in school separate and opposite to the way I act at home. In school, when we’re working on a High School Office episode, I’m as active as I can be even to the point where it’s annoying. When we’re preparing for a confessional, Stephen (Mr. I’m the Director because I have camera) gets Sam ready for his line.

“Ok ready Sam?”

“Ugh Yeah” sighed Sam.

I interrupt with a giant “C’MON PEOPLE I’VE GOT PLACES TO BE!” In an attempt to get shooting done quicker. Stephen retaliates with his own remark.

“Well we would be able to get some shooting done if CERTAIN people weren’t yelling!” yells Stephen.

“WELL I’m only yelling because we waste so much time messing around!”

“Me and you yelling isn’t helping anything either so SHUT UP!”

“Ok you don’t have to a douchebag about it.”

“RYAN! I will KILL YOU!”

“O?”

Around my friends I become a much more open and upbeat individual. Expressing my opinion in the way of choosing without having to worry looking dumb. At home, I change completely. That open and upbeat person becomes so reserved and quiet. I don’t even “Hi” to anyone. I walk and usually see my mom just chilling watching TV.

“If you hungry I made something for you.”

“Ok.”

“OK.” Those are probably the most words I say to them for a while. At home, I usually don’t speak to my family unless I’m spoken to. For some reason, I just can’t be that open and expressive at home. The way I interact with friends is way too (for lack of a better word) weird for my family. When they speak, I can’t even be asked to say something back. In a sense I leave that version of me back at school.

In the words of James Baldwin, “Language, incontestably, reveals the speaker.” To James Baldwin, he saw that when black people spoke in “Black English” it showed that they different from the other white people. It showed that they’ve lived differently from being slaves, in which they knew a few Standard English words but had to piece the rest together for themselves. When I think about my personas, both in and out of school, I understand what he’s talking about. When I’m at school I’m surrounded by a vast majority of people that I can outright trust. Sometimes I can see my friends as more of my family than my real family. To me, we speak the same language, Trust. If I have a problem, I always go to a friend first before anything or anyone else. To my family, they might as well be speaking gibberish since I can’t be my true self around them. When I think about it again it’s like being in Spanish class, I usually don’t say much because I have a fear of being wrong or looking stupid. I don’t want to say the wrong thing to family and just look stupid in the end.

So in conclusion, I would guess as of now my main language among my friends and I is Trust. Like James Baldwin said, my language does reveals a lot about me. It reveals that I do indeed code-switch from school and home. Yet, my code-switch is pretty dynamic. I feel as though I’m two different people living in the same body, and to be honest I like it this way. When I’m around my family we can’t relate with anything at all, but on the other hand when I’m around friends I can be at peace with how I really am.
