Lauren Matthews Capstone

Posted by Lauren Matthews in Capstone · Kaur · Wed on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 10:37 pm

For my capstone project, I designed and decorated the venue for the Second Annual Black Student Union Gala. My main goal was to include the SLA community with the decorating process so I contacted the Community Involvement Club and asked for volunteers. I had more than 20 volunteers decorating the space so the decorating didn’t take too much time. There was a total of 22 tables and 240 chairs to decorate. My goal was to decorate the event under three hours and it took two hours. The colors of the design came from the Pan- African colors, which represent liberation, unity, and growth. The overall decoration was a success. I learned most importantly involving the SLA community keeps everyone more connected with their peers and makes them more a part of club events. Seeing students from different grades come together and work as a team made me feel proud because there are little opportunities where upperclassmen may interact with the underclassmen. It has taught me that the relationships created with my SLA peers expand more than inside the hallways. This project would have not been pieced together if it had not been for the help of each volunteer.

Anon, (2019). [online] Available at: http://www.nea.org/assets/docs/PB11_ParentInvolvement08.pdf [Accessed 26 Jan. 2019]. This PDF article tells about the importances of parent involvement for education purposes. This article was selected because it gives factual evidence to support the correlation of academic performance and parent - community partnerships. I will use this article to support the overall goal of presentation piece, which is to create more relationships between the scholars and the academic community. I will also focus on the collaboration aspect of working together to design the Gala to welcome everyone.

Files.eric.ed.gov. (2019). [online] Available at: https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1124001.pdf [Accessed 26 Jan. 2019]. This PDF article focuses on the implications for family school relations. I choose this article to discuss the main aspects of the SLA community and Ben Franklin HIgh school relationship dues to the move. Using this article, it helps me understand how school partnerships so that students are well respected and more comfortable within their communities. The Gala will bring schools together to share a voice for minorities and school organizations.
BSU Organizations

Depts.washington.edu. (2019). The Early History of the UW Black Student Union - Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Project. [online] Available at: http://depts.washington.edu/civilr/BSU_beginnings.htm [Accessed 26 Jan. 2019]. This website gives me insight on the early actions of BSU and the foundations of Black empowerment. The Gala doesn’t just focus on certain black cultures but to consider recognizing advocacy outreach within different cultures. This website helps me with creating a theme for the Gala for the different cultures found in the different school communities. Also using this website I will include comprehension on why SLA BSU was created and the legacy left behind for minorities in school communities.

Health Outreach Partners. (2019). How Outreach Programs Can Improve Health Outcomes - Health Outreach Partners. [online] Available at: https://outreach-partners.org/2012/02/01/how-outreach-programs-can-improve-health-outcomes/ [Accessed 26 Jan. 2019]. This article explain the health outcomes based on outreach programs. I choose this article to help support the benefits of outreach programs and the positive effects on health. I will use this article when explaining the reasoning why outreach programs affect how relationships are affected in social skills and community empowerment. Social skill empowerment helps students feel more ready for real world interactions with peers or in a career. It also created more comfortability within a neighborhood. The relationships I hope to create within the parents and students will encourage students to be more confident in creations for school related activities. Academic Impressions. (2019). Tips for Outreach to Area High Schools - Academic Impressions. [online] Available at: https://www.academicimpressions.com/blog/tips-for-outreach-to-area-high-schools/ [Accessed 26 Jan. 2019]. This article talks about focusing on the needs for the schools when being involved with outreach activities for schools. I choose this article to explain some of the needs when coming to getting to have community events. As for the Gala, the Gala was created so the students and performers can share why they might feel why student associations are important in communities. SOme of the needs that were talked about on the website are shared resources found for students, preventing barriers found in the schools like equality or racism.

Openknowledge.worldbank.org. (2019). This article is social development and effectiveness. I will use this article create effectiveness between the students in community involvement club and the parents that are helping with the Gala. Effectiveness will give community involvement club perseverance when dealing with school activities. The parents will also get a better understanding of why being involved with the school helps school activities move more efficiently. The student will work with social development and work with other students to male student organizations better.

Project Smart. (2019). The Six Principles of Project Management. [online] Available at: https://www.projectsmart.co.uk/the-six-principles-of-project-management.php [Accessed 26 Jan. 2019].

This article is about the basic principles to considering during the process of project development. I will use this article when creating a plan for the design of the Gala. During my meetings with the community involvement club, I will break down these principles so that the vision will help create partnerships with other school academic clubs. Some of the principles that were mentioned were the Vision and mission, the Standards of engagement, and measurement accountability skills. These principles will help with dependency, which is a key to for building relationships between people.

Ipma-usa.org. (2019). [online] Available at: http://www.ipma-usa.org/articles/LeadershipStyles.pdf [Accessed 26 Jan. 2019]. This article is about the Leadership styles that are found in project creation. Some of the Leadership Styles that were mentioned are directive and democratic. Those leadership roles will help with my capstone because it helps when creating roles for each person within a organization. Directive roles helps students who need to be aligned when dealing with community events, which a big events that need specific resources. Democratic roles are for bigger school clubs that need help with making decisions which may be a struggle. To prevent these things. The meeting will be happening within BSU about parenting help.

Marie, Ann 27/3 Tuesday

During this interview, I will be discussing the different fabrics and design materials needed to bring the vision of the Gala. The materials that will be gathered will include african prints for table cloths or napkins. I would also discuss the choice of materials, why including certains prints or plates. Involving different schools give input on what needs to be included will help explore different aspects of culture dynamics and race within the schools.

Event Planner Interview 28/3 Wednesday

During this interview, I would discuss the future aspects for the Gala. Some of the aspects are involving other schools student governments that are invited to the Gala. Involving the SLA CIc club will help help the organization within the school. Now that the school is moving to Ben Franklin, students can also incorporate project developments for BSU related events like the Gala or Schools dances. As for Parent Organizations, donations and volunteers for event setup could relive stress for student event planning. Having this conversation will sought out the future steps for student organizations for school activities.

Uptop Books - Naima DeBrest, Kyianna Thomas, Lauren Matthews

Episode 2: Literary Lenses

The book that we are reading is Water for Elephant by Sara Gruen. During this episode, we will be discussing the relationships and correlations between the characters looking through the literary lenses. Each lens talks about things reflecting on the time period of the book in the 1930s and as well as the social classes between characters. For this podcast, we will be talking about pages 81-275.

“August, wait! Where are you going? I’m going to teach her a lesson,” he says without stopping. But August!” I shout after him. Wait! She was good! She came back of her own accord. Besides, you can’t do anything now. The show is still going! He stops so abruptly a cloud of dust temporarily obscures his feet. He stands absolutely still, staring at the ground. After a long while, he speaks. Good. The band will drown out the noise.” I stare after him, my mouth open in horror. -Page 170, Chapter 12

Q4-4 Slideshow, Blog, Artist’s Statement

Posted by Lauren Matthews in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 12:46 pm

Some of the art that I created for this quarter were all drawings. The drawings weren’t hard, but it took lots of patience. I usually traced my drawing before outlining them with a dark pencil or Sharpie marker. The inspiration for these drawing came from recreated artist pieces that I found on google. One of my favorite drawings that I have created was the Line Drawings. My line drawings took the most time and I was more detailed when drawing them.

The one main material that I used for all of my artwork was a pencil. I also used charcoal to add different shades on grey to my artwork to make it more realistic. Outside sources for shading was different shading form images and website that I searched on google. I used the charcoal during my studio time because it can get real messy at times. Then I used color pencils to bring my art to life and less dreary and dark.

One of the many things that happened while creating my art was that I learned how to expand my horizons. My previous artwork was focus around the saem ideas for each quarter. As for this quarter, I looked at examples that seem harder for me to design in order for me to explore different art techniques. I would like people to know that the process of creating my artwork was a challenge because I don’t like drawing mostly. So I got over my discomfort and excelled from it.

A Woman’s Worth

Posted by Lauren Matthews in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 12:22 pm

Equal rights for women have been changing for over decades. These laws are there to protect the rights of men and women. In the early 1900s, women were given small opportunities aside to feel equal to men. Men have more opportunities than women because they seem more superior. Then again, women are more beneficial to these laws because it supports the many women who don’t have rights which makes these women oppressed. By doing this, it takes away from a woman’s quality and perseverance. Despite having the same legal rights as men, women are still disadvantaged in comparison. The disadvantages included, gender price discrimination, psychological discrimination and many more that are equally unjust.

The cost of female sanitary items and female undergarments has been a very controversial topic. This included the many harms of gender taxing against women of all ages. The Pink Tax is extra money that women have to pay towards their hygiene products and sanitary items. According to an article from Yahoo Finance, a Consumer Report included “women’s products cost more to manufacture, used different formulations or were assigned higher prices by retailers”. That doesn’t give retailing companies the right to make female product cost more because the manufacturing rate, it just makes them targeter trying to get extra money in their pockets. Some products that have the same manufacture and production process, are found from retailing companies for both men and women. Degree deodorant at Walmart was $3.88 for women, $2.47 for men. Deodorant which is  a requirement for healthy hygiene is used by everyone and cost more for females because of the packaging, for it to look more appealing to women to buy. Walgreens has a 3-pack of Gillette razors at $11.99 for women and $10.99 for men. Once again razors, something that everyone uses cost more for women but serves the same purposes as it does for men.Women get paid less than men and are still at harm to afford female necessities.

From a psychological view, Male dominance in environments like workforce are a improper maldistribution of power compared to women. This act of male dominance indicates sexual harassment not as a sexual act but males taking control. These men have the upper hand and persuade women with promotions and raises because they have access. As reported by psychologist John Pryor on psychology today, “factors that make men likely to harass women in the workplaces, are desires to dominate women and endorsement of stereotypic views of male sex-role norms”. Men in the workplace are naturally competitive due to high levels of testosterone and become power hungry. Men are stereotypically enhanced to be powerful which takes away from men being humble. Then women have to work twice as hard, because men are competing to be what’s best. Men are less empathetic over what a woman fights to get which gets in the way of what they desire, to be on top.

Writer Joseph Conrad once said “Being a woman is terribly difficult task, since it consists principally in dealing with men.” Men have always had the upper hand since the begging of time which makes them already at the top. Women, who have been given little opportunities and some rights, have to be above these stereotypes. This creates a space where gender discrimination is revealed and how men are mentally involved when given access to power. Women, who are less powerful, will most likely be acknowledge if involves a man’ satisfaction. Women should take a stand to equity, because their valves are as important as men who are at the top.

This may be my best possible 2fer because I completed this more individually. I usually get more support from my teachers and peers that help with the process of completing my essay, but I worked by myself. I put more effort into my work knowing that my previous 2fers had mistakes that I made commonly.  Now that I have knowledge based on the guidance that I received from my previous 2fers, I know now that what I need to put my best work forward is challenging myself more to work on my own.

Taming Your Silver Lining

Posted by Lauren Matthews in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 7:53 am

The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare is based on the conception of love. Bianca shares connection with one suitor Lucentio which eventually turns out as a romantic relationship. In comparison, her sister Katharine doesn’t want to share a romantic relationship with Petruchio which results in conflict. Petruchio abuses Katherine’s pride by treating her in an inhumane way. By the end of the book, Bianca and Lucentio have an honest relationship. Katherine obeys Petruchio despite his rude action towards her.

Silver Linings Playbook is about two main characters named Pat and Tiffany. Pat recently came home from a Psychiatric facility. He hopes to win back his ex-wife, Nikki. Along the way, he meets Tiffany who is the sister of a friend of his. IN order to get closer to Nikki, Pat asks Tiffany to give Nikki a letter he wrote but in exchange, Tiffany wants Pat to dance with her at a dance competition in order to win his love.

“The Taming of the Shrew” and “Silver Linings Playbook” relatively share a controversial topic about honesty and deception. Petruchio takes advantage of Katherine by imposing her into a relationship that only he could benefit from. Petruchio doesn’t confront her about his arrangement to win her love but instead abusing the little power she has in their relationship. On the contrary, Tiffany, who is similar to Petruchio in this sense, was dishonest to Pat in order to benefit from him. Their deception brought out their true colors which lead them to a romantic relationship. Both the play and the movie reflect the belief that Honesty and loyalty do not factor into a romantic relationship when one or more is egocentric of what they want or want in return.

Signior Hortensio, ‘twixt such friends as we Few words suffice; and therefore, if thou know} One rich enough to be Petruchio’s wife— As wealth is burden of my wooing dance— Be she as foul as was Florentius’ love, As old as Sibyl, and as curst and shrewd As Socrates’ Xanthippe or a worse, She moves me not—or not removes at least Affection’s edge in me, were she as rough As are the swelling Adriatic seas. I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; If wealthily, then happily in Padua. - Petruchio Act 1 Scene 2 Line 66-77

The audience gets a glance at Petruchio’s perception as he admits to Hortensio about his scheme to win over Katherine. He discusses that he wants to marry her for money and sets aside romance in their relationship. Her character traits, the things that define who she is, is not significant to Petruchio. He knows of Katherine’s demeanor, but most meaningful her financial status, which he is anticipating. Katherine is not aware of his plan which doesn’t allow her to speak on what she wants or needs. This plan abuses Katherine’s power and pride, as is shown to the reader as a one person relationship.

Screenshot 2018-04-16 at 7.51.46 AM
Screenshot 2018-04-16 at 7.51.46 AM

Correspondingly, This quotes briefly explains Tiffany’s gateway to get Pat to see she really likes him which in comparison is similar to Petruchio wooing Katherine. This quote approaches Tiffany’s selfishness. Tiffany emotionally tells Pat about how she is involved with other people’s issues and how she supports them but expects something in return. She continuously aids other people’s needs and not receiving the same support back which teaches her a lesson about being all for herself. A little later she gives the suggestion to Pat to participate in a dance competition for her. The audience then comes to a realization that the lessons for the competitions bring them closer together which is what she wants. Tiffany knowing that Pat wants to get closer to Nikki and that he will do anything in his power, Tiffany being one of the factors of doing so.

-“The only way you can beat my crazy was by doing something crazy yourself. Thank you. I love you. I knew it the minute I met you. I’m sorry it took so long for me to catch up. I just got stuck.” - Pat

Pat’s determination lead him to understand that with Tiffany’s help, he fell in love with her. Pat is dependent and doesn’t let his egocentricity affect his sensuality. This quote in contrast to Petruchio realistic views of a romantic relationship shows how the influence of someone can develop feelings for others. In this moment Pat gives Tiffany a letter saying about how she lied to him, which let him see how much she cares for him. He is thankful that her guidance helped with one of his bigger issues, depression. Him being “stuck” was him trying to consider the bigger picture, which was Tiffany’s vain choices and truly having a romantic interest in somebody that he knew from a complicated relationship.

“Shrew” and “Silver Linings Playbook” authors want readers to understand the exposition of love and what it means in a relationship. Based on these representations, these characters attitude towards courtship dating does not involve their partner’s say or satisfactory. It also shows that the attitudes towards dating do not involve confrontation a partner’s true character. Society’s values the things they want for themselves. The behavior that interferes with the things that society priorities are feeling that people in courtship share.

Q3-4 Slideshow - Lauren Matthews

Posted by Lauren Matthews in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, March 30, 2018 at 3:48 pm
Some of the art I create for Quater 3 include a bike drawing, an optical illusion, different shaded forms, an eye drawing, and a mandala. I feel like my artwork was rushed and I could have spent more time my assignments. All but my most recent assignment has color and I feel like the other assignments are more dramatic with the black and grey shading. The mandala looks so joyful and colorful rather than my optical illusion which looks scary.

While making art this quarter I realized that the assignments seemed easier and that is why I spent my studio time the way I did. it took a lot of hours to give my art the grade that it deserved and I feel like it was worth it. I traced over most of my drawings then outline then with pencil or dark marker to make it more appealing. The shading form assignment, for example, took the most time because I kept erasing to show the different types of shading. I even used a paper towel to smooth out the shading to make it look softer.

I would like people to know that even though I rushed my art process this quarter, it actually gave me time to realize that I need to work on my time better. I know next quarter not to rush my assignments and start as soon as I get the chance in order to do my best. I would also like to use more color for my drawings to make a point that my art means something to me.

Final Project Q2-4 - Artist’s Statement

Posted by Lauren Matthews in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 3:29 pm
 Artist’s Statement:
For Quarter 2 Advanced Art class, I created drawings, paintings and edited photos. For week 1, the assignment was to do contour drawings and I choose viral and related topics that were currently going on. These topics include Pennywise from the movie IT and the dancing hotdog from Snapchat. Two of my favorite pieces of art created was week 4, choosing your own painting and week 5 and 6, recreate a piece of art. Week 5 and 6, I recreated a piece of art by the artist Noe Two. I felt like this piece was personal and I did better because it was someone that I admire, Aaliyah. As for my recreation of a piece of art for week 4, I painted a water bearer with different shades of blue. I got the idea from my zodiac sign which is aquarius and the sign for it which is a water bearer.
I would like people to know that I take my art is personal to me and that I put a lot of effort into each assignment. I like to choose personal topics for my art work because I want to express how I feel about certain topics through my art work. For example in week 7 and 8, I completed a illustration piece from a piece of writing. The photo I used In this piece of writing was image was from album cover. I made the photo larger first. Then I traced the image and colored it in.
Most of the equipment I used was, coloring pencils, markers and paint. I used markers to outline my art so that it can pop out. Them I would use paint or markers to add some color to my artwork. In week 1 for my contour drawing and coloring, I used different colors to make my contour drawing better. Using these different colors allowed my drawing to be more colorful. Instead of using the colors that are supposed to be for each picture, using different colors made my picture more aesthetic.

The Grieving Process

Posted by Lauren Matthews in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 11:00 am

“Are you OK?”  There are other ways of checking in on someone, but that just happens to be the most common one. Asking someone are they O.K doesn’t make things better for the person, it just gives the one that’s asking certainty about the person’s being. As for me. I’ll be honest about if I’m fine or not, but i’ll let that person know so they’ll not have to worry about making me feel O.K. “No, I am not O.K” came out faster than the paramedics that Sunday morning when my mom collapsed on dining room floor.

She was admitted to Einstein Hospital around 2pm on Valentines Day. When my dad arrived at the hospital room, the doctors explained that they tried everything the could to bring her to back life. When my dad came back from the hospital I was expecting good news. The words “she didn’t make it”  had me lost, I was confused and angry. I started pointing fingers blaming the paramedics for being late, blaming the doctors at the hospital for not doing the best they could but most importantly myself. I continued asking myself was it the food I gave her that morning to oily or salty? Did I stress her out? I panicked and fell to the floor screaming  because I couldn’t bear with the fact I lost my mother, my other half.
Therapy wasn’t my first option for handling grief. My dad worried about me because I was too quiet. When someone ask about the situation, I would avoid the main subject which was her dying. I would talk about her death as if she had never passed away and she was still alive. I told my dad I prefer talking to him about everything that I felt and that I just need different opinions on how to handle the situation. He suggested for me to go to therapy because they are more professional and have more experience with incidents that deal with grief. I’m not comfortable with the fact that therapy was one of the options because of my trust issues. My views on therapy was that the therapist was only there to pass your personal information on to the next person. The therapist will take your deepest darkest secret and go home to their families, sit down at the dinner table to share their day at work. “ She told me that she says she’s the reason for her mother’s death. Isn’t that ridiculous?”. See what’s ridiculous is taking my trust for granted and that’s the last thing I needed.

My first therapist was someone that understood me. My first session of the three sessions we shared were mostly about what happened and how I felt in the moment. I hesitated at first but I went on with the story and she told me how she felt the same pain when her father passed. I felt more comfortable because not only did she  have a family member that passed away, this family member was her parent. Our first activity together was a goodbye letter I wrote during our second session. The goodbye letter was a source for letting out what you might want to say to the person before they passed. In my letter. I wrote about how my last words shouldn’t of been “I’m sorry” It should of been “I love you” or “I admire you” or “ you’re the best”. She read my letter and asked if I need a moment and I told her no. I felt relieved and more free to say whatever I felt about the situation and how I am dealing with it because we shared similar experiences. My third and final session wasn’t really a session. I arrived to the appointment late and she was heading out the door. “I have been assigned to work for another company. I needed you to be here on time so we can talk about you meeting with the your new therapist. You’re going to receive a phone call from NHS in two weeks to set an appointment. Nice working with you.” Then she left and I was angry. It was bad enough I had trust issues and told my personal business to someone I barely knew. Then that person leaves and takes my business with them to pass it onto the person.

I received my therapist three weeks after I decided I didn’t want to continue going to therapy. I was still stuck on the fact that I opened up to someone and now they’re gone. What possibly could encourage me to continue telling my business to another person who don’t know me besides the fact that I am grieving? I ended going to my appointment anyway because I still wanted different perspectives on how to deal with grief. That Tuesday afternoon, I went to my session and waited twenty minutes into the 1 hour session. The twenty minutes felt like hours and I just wanted to go home. She finally came down and we walked to her room on the second floor. She opened her door and offered me to sit anywhere but I choose the corner because she is a stranger. I sat down and she asked me about the situation but I looked at her like how doesn’t she know about it already. My thoughts were she wanted to hear the story to pass time and that old my therapist didn’t go over the details from the previous sessions I’ve had. I just told her the story because I wanted to see how she feels about it. As she took notes on her computer, I asked what kinds of activities are we going to go over to help with my grieving issue. She told me she had the “5 stages of Grief activity” which is an an article that is going to help with seeing where my emotions lie within the situation. For the next session we went over the 5 stages of Grief which are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. She had a list of questions and I would answer these questions so that she can see which of my emotions fall under certain category. The results were I was mostly angry at the situation and I was accepting the fact that I was the reason for her death. For the rest of the session we talked mostly about why I feel like I’m the reason. I explained to her I only felt like this because I was there at the moment with her, when she collapsed, when she was taken out of the house, when she was in the ambulance. She told me that it is good that I accepting the fact that she is gone, which really means that I am not in denial about her passing away. She comforted me by telling me that we will work on ways on how not to feel like I am the cause of her death. I went home that night thinking that therapy might not be so bad after all. Maybe putting my trust into my therapist is for the greater good.  I know my mom would have wanted me to give it a chance, now I feel like I’m doing it for us.

Little things in life will lead to bigger things. Having school work, coming home to a house full of people who are loud, helping my little brothers with their school work, cooking dinner, and getting myself together for the next day day are just the little things. The bigger thing in this case, would be maintaining my own lifestyle without out my mom. Setting my opinions and my feelings aside to benefit myself is the best choice I have made so far. What I learned was that putting my pride aside should only be done if I feel comfortable enough to do so. I have also learned that making choices for myself shouldn’t have to start with me being “O.K” it should start with how I want to feel in the end. Trusting my therapist just a little should help with adjusting my trust issues with other people. My mom’s death gives me strength and knowledge to know that I am putting my trust into something for a reason. Knowing that my guardian angel is watching me makes me feel proud to say that “I am going to be O.K”.

Final Q1-4 Slideshow

Posted by Lauren Matthews in Advanced Art · Hull · x2 Band on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 1:03 pm
For the first few weeks in art class, I created an interior design painting of Yogi Bear on a ceiling tile. The next assignment I created a junk art collage of things that resemble Autumn and used real leaves and tree bark to bring my art to life. My final assignment I  drew a portrait of myself using crayons to bring color to it. Out of the three assignments, my least favorite assignment was that self-portrait. I feel that that was my least favorite because my weakness is drawing faces. When drawing faces I struggle with drawing eyes and noses.

Some things that I would people to know about my artwork that I spent a lot of time on my artwork. I used my studio time wisely and also used my free time at home working on my artwork. The most time I spent for one of my assignments was the fall wall hanging assignment. For the fall wall hanging, I did all of my homework due that nigh during class so That when I got home, I can work on the assignment. I walked around outside and collected tree bark and leaves that have fallen off the ground. Then I cut up all of the things I found and glued each piece to where they belong.

I would also like people to know that the process of making art is hard and takes a time to process ideas. By the time ideas come to mind, you have to express those ideas using different kinds of art. When I found the ideas for my ceiling tile, it was hard to capture the idea of what I would want it to look like on the tile. I wanted to catch the idea of Yogi Bear and his picnic basket but I just choose the idea of painting his face because I was running out of time it was easiest.

Commitment, A Major Key - Lauren Matthews

Commitment, A Major Key

Stores that produce the most revenue are typically the ones that are the most convenient for customers. These stores provide a space where customers want to spend their money because of good quality of their service. Walmart and Target, two big box steady retail stores, make efforts to lure their customers with advertisements that guarantee the costumer’s satisfaction. Although they both guarantee satisfaction, there is clear evidence that proves Walmart is a better source for shoppers than Target because of their commitment to their customers above all else.

One way that Walmart shows their customers that they value them is through policies such as their loyalty programing. According to the news on Walmart's website, Walmart’s 3-2-1, is a new way save money for Walmart prepaid and Walmart money cards. Their 3-2-1 rewards program includes, 3% back on purchases made on Walmart.com. It also offers 2% back on fuel purchases at Walmart gas stations and 1 % back on purchases made at Walmart stores. In comparison, Target’s has a savings system called Cartwheel Perks. Cartwheel Perks is a program which allows Target shoppers to earn points every time a purchase is made and redeem the points for apparel, food, and other items. As reported by couponsinthenews.com, Target’s program is currently in the process of ending because of they are making adjustments regarding to issues that was found by the perk users. The negative feedback that states as such, “experiencing pricing errors when buying items.” Target shutting down their program, leaves both the old user and the new user with nothing to depend on when purchasing items. Loyalty programs brings more customers to the store because of the discounts the program provides.

Besides customer service, another key component to Wal Mart's business is advertising. Advertisement  creates an immediate impact that will keep customers engaged to what is called the “better buy.” Social media accounts make contributions to relevant benefits and opportunities for the customer. Walmart is socially involved but also uses the media nationally and locally. For example, Walmart reaches out to other store locations around the world by establishing Facebook pages for each located store. Interfering with social media accounts, promotes a company or brand, genuine intentions  to create a motivation for customers so they can be interested. Most importantly, these social accounts provides a platform for their customer’s voices to be heard and taken seriously. For instance, Walmart has a website where mothers can talk about their shopping experiences. Target’s Twitter and Facebook social media accounts has community involvement that is equal to social involvement. Being socially involved with the community is a positive because it shows sincerity and shows support to the customers in the community. However, Target receives more negative feedback based on a customer's shopping experience found on consumeraffairs.com.

Walmart’s mission is phrases that they commit to build opportunities to customers and communities worldwide:, Save Money, Live better .On the contrary, Target consistently fulfills the Expect More. Pay Less brand. These two persuasive slogans that have different meanings. However the proof that is shown is that Walmart follows through on their slogan and constantly dominates Target.  Based on the research given by investopedia.com, WMT, Walmart Store Inc, is the world’s largest retail company with 10,700 stores, with 4,500 of those store in the U.S. Target has 1,806 stores that are only to be found in the U.S. Wal-Mart’s total assets were $203.7 billion, about five times larger than Target’s comparatively $41.4 billion. Consequently, Walmart is the “elephant in the room” when it comes to market capitalization, which is $240 billion, three times larger than Target’s $79 billion.

Commitment is a key point in a relationship because it shows reliance and loyalty from one to another. Although, commitment may only seem important  to customers, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about saving a buck or two. This becomes especially evident for those who attempt to make a profit off of their relationships. Advertisment, revenue, and saving programs are all essential principles to a customer - store relationship. This shows that Walmart is faithful to their customers because they have not abandon the one thing that customers value.

Posted by Lauren Matthews in Spanish 1 - Manuel - E on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 11:00 am

Soy hija de padres orgullosos

Comprehensivos

Cinco hermanos tres hermanas

Producto de tierras felices

Veo niños pequenos jugando

Oigo la risa

Saboreo la comida que mi madre hace

Toco las nubes el cielo

Huelo el perfume de las flores

Trabajo con mi destino

Camino con mi infancia

Bailo con mi dignidad

Somos productos de la felicidad

Somos alegres

Somos alegres

La lengua de paz y harmonía

No somos tristes. Vivimos en america.

No estamos enfermos. Estamos contentos.

Tenemos familia en Maryland, pero allí no tengo hogar.

Mi familia estudiamos la vida, quiero encontrar .

Creative Project Macbeth: Lauren Matthews and Benjamin Seing

Posted by Lauren Matthews in English 1 - Giknis - A on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 9:49 pm

The Board game title “Who killed King Duncan” is a fun, challenging, and  mental game for all ages. This board game is from 2-4 players. Me and my partner, Benjamin Seing decided we wanted to do a board game because a board game is the best way to find out about Who killed King Duncan . In out board game, the main objective is to use the quotes from the book as clues to find out King Duncan’s killer. The first person to guess the right killer with all the clue cards gone from in the center of the board, wins the game. The board game uses quotes from all over the the book. Including the “suspects” quotes,  provided in the game. The suspects in the board Lady Macbeth, Malcolm and Donald, And Macbeth as himself.

There are four stages in the board game. Stage one is King Duncan’s  room, Stage two is the Ballroom, Stage three is Malcolm and Donalbain room, and Stage four is Lady Macbeth and Macbeth’s room. Just like in the book, all the suspects that was named was in the house with King Duncan when his death was announced. Each player rolls the die on their turn and move on the board to the number which was roll. If the player who has the turn rolls on a  square “goblet” they pick up a clue card with the goblet in the center of the board. On the card there is certain quotes chosen from the book to that help determine who is King Duncan’s killer.

When the player at least has four of the clue cards, they have the opportunity to guess the killer or continue to gather more clue cards. If the player guesses the killer wrong twice, they automatically lose the game. To make the game just a bit challenging, there are “hot spots”. The hot spots are spots on the board where the player either moves forward or moves backward. For example on of the hot spots could be “move three space back” this prevent the player from winning.

Working with my partner Has been a great way to over look Macbeth in a fun game form. Some things we had found challenging was finding time and creating dates to do the project. There wasn’t no lack of communication in this project. We found it really easy to make the board and the design of the board. We really wanted to base the board off of the game “clue” but it was hard because we didn’t want to steal the idea . So we came together and we kind of used the layout of the board.

Media Fluency Lauren Matthews

Q2 Media Fluency Slide Lauren Matthews
I made my presentation look this way because I feel that the picture of the referee holding the basketball, makes it clear to see that my passion is basketball. It is not like the referee is holding a football, it is holding a basketball to indicate that basketball is the sport being played. The picture is large and visual. I also made my text large so it can can be apart of the whole slide. What influenced my decision making is that I thought the best way to explain how I strongly feel about my passion for basketball.  Just like how a referee is excited to play a part of controlling a basketball game by making the calls, I feel that same way when I have the ball dribbling down the court and having control and guiding my team.

1.The video that we watched in class today was about a boy who was being bullied. In the video the was a eye emoji to represent how if someone was to click the eye his life would be better. When you clicked the eye his life got better and if the eye wasn't clicked on, his life would be bad. The eye is to show that we see the boy.
2.The video brings to my mind that it the same as bullying because when the eye is not clicked on, people will still get hurt and still be bullied. The eye indicates that we can help and that we see those who are being bullied.
3.When I look up my name online I am a business worker.I have no back round of myself.
4.Based on this appearance, people will perceive me as a busy and hardworking.
5.The goal of internet trolls is to see people be hurt and too get bullied.
6.The positive results  is that if you have a positive back round, it is good for applying for jobs. Some negative results would be that if anything bad appears then your out of luck and can't be eligible to work.

My local area network is Verizon. All the devices on my internet connection are phones, laptops , a tablet etc.
What I learned about networks is that how every device in your home is connected.
What I would tell other people that they need to know about having a home network is that they internet is not as simple as it seems
