Kamil Kielar Capstone

Posted by Kamil Kielar in CTE Senior Capstone · Kamal/Shagin/Ugworji · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8:42 pm
For my senior Capstone project, I had decided to create a foosball table which I hoped to donate to an after-school program or boys and girls club. Seeking Braskem funding in early February, I, unfortunately, received only partial funding for the continuation of my project. Working with a smaller budget than expected, I had begun to redesign my foosball table determined to complete my goal. Using plywood instead of solid wood, steel conduit instead of aluminum rod, and creating my own foosball players instead of purchasing them, I minimized the cost of the original table sevenfold. Originally the goal of the project had been to use woodworking techniques and joints in order to create a high-quality table, focusing much of my time of the creation of the table itself. Without the available funds, I made the decision to create my own foosball players which had taken a greater time than expected. First CADing (Computer Aided Design) my foosball player, machining halves out with a CNC router, gluing them together, sanding them down and finally drilling the hole for rod had been a tedious process which I underestimated and ended up spending a great deal of time on. In the end, I had created a stained and polished foosball table even if it hadn’t been the one I originally envisioned.

Foosball.com, www.foosball.com/tablebuildingguide.html. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This source is of a website which had previously designed his own foosball table. This source is particularly helpful because it gives an idea of a possible budget I may have for this project. They had completed something similar and it seems that seems like this would be helpful as well to know the steps in which to complete the project. This source doesn't seem to have any biases because it is purely a description of the authors process and what he had learned along the way. The audience of this website seems to be anyone interested. The language is simple and easy to follow so this is really open to anyone.

“Background.” Analysis to Maximise the Efficiency of Anaerobic Digestion - Celignis Biomass Analysis Laboratory, www.celignis.com/feedstock.php?value=18. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This is very thorough analysis hardwood and the different properties which it is made up of.  The company Celignis does many different specimen testing on biomass samples of all different types. This is a very scientific look into hardwood and the different material which make it up. It is for a highly educated audience that understands science and would be interested in this. There most likely is no bias in this source because this is a research company which needs to uphold their reputation and reliability. This company seems to have tests and analysis other than woul which shows that this is a large company.

Baez, Joe. “Physics 111: Fundamental Physics I.” Self-Driving Cars Become a Reality, 1 Jan. 1970, colgatephys111.blogspot.com/2015/12/the-physics-of-foosball.html. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This source tells you the physics behind a foosball table and the math that goes along with it. It uses the equation that are needed in order to show you how the rotational force of your arm is changed into work. This is very detailed explanation and the math seems to be very intricate. The audience is most definitely going to need to know physics equations and have an understanding in physics. This source most likely does not have any biases because this is just some analysis of the forces used when operating a foosball table.

Borysiuk, Piotr. “CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF PLYWOOD PRODUCTION SYSTEM MODEL.” Management and Production Engineering Review. 10 February 2013, http://www.czasopisma.pan.pl/Content/89321/PDF/Borysiuk_Boruszewski_Kowaluk_Niziałek_Grzegorzewska.pdf. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This article talks about the production of plywood and the range of market value for it. The portion of the article which I had mostly talked about had been the quality of the plywood and the properties of the wood sold. The audience that this would be for is someone most likely in the business field wanting to know more about the plywood market. This is more of a business analysis but there are aspects which are useful to me in this project. There are not biases in this source because this is just a pure description of business of selling plywood.

Editor. “Woodworking Joints: Which Wood Joints Should You Use?” WoodWorkers Guild of America, Woodworkers Guild of America, 10 Dec. 2018, www.wwgoa.com/article/woodworking-joints-which-ones-should-you-use/. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This article tells the readers about the vast number of wood joints that can be completes and how each of them are used structurally. The Woodworkers Guild of America is a large organization which has many members which receive information regularly. To a point this source is trying to promote itself to the audience and shine itself as this helpful and useful tool. The audience seems to be people who are beginning woodshop or maybe slightly higher like an amuatuer at woodworking. The article is simply written and easy to understand how each of the joints are made and how they can be used.

Gu, Jiyou. Cai, Zhiyong. “Development and Application of Wood Adhesives in China.” Wood Adhesives 2009: Plenary Session https://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/pdf2010/fpl_2010_gu001.pdf. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This is a thorough analysis on the different types of wood glue and how they work in different applications. This is how different wood glues affects different types of wood and the strength curves of the glue. This is helpful to me because it helps me to see which glue would be the best for my application. The audience for this would be people who are in need of knowing how different wood glues have different strengths. This source most likely doesn't have any bias because this a research article. This has many different curves  and graphs which tell the audience info about the strength of the glues.

Neokentin. “Common Types of Wood Joints You Should Know • 1001 Pallets.” 1001 Pallets, 1001 Pallets, 16 Oct. 2018, www.1001pallets.com/common-wood-joints/. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

The organization 1001 Pallets is committed to reusing making projects out of wood pallets which isn’t always the highest of quality wood. They don’t seem to a for profit or profitable organization and they seem to care very much about their audience. Connecting to the Woodworkers Guild of America source, this source goes much more in depth about wood joinery and the different applications for it. This source talks very much about exactly how to make many of these different joints. It gives specific instruction along with the limitation of the joints. No bias seems to be present within the source.

“WOOD ANALYSIS.” What Why How RSS, what-when-how.com/forensic-sciences/wood-analysis/. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

Very in depth analysis on wood and wood identification. This is definitely for a highly educated audience which understands much information about forensics science. Saying that, this document explains everything from wood anatomy to wood identification. This goes very in depth along with detailed imagery of wood under a microscope. Seeing as this is a research study on wood, people have their own reputation they would like to preserve and seems like it would be very reputable. There doesn't seem to be any bias due to this being purely a research article.

“ Build Your Own Foosball Table .” Build Your Own Foosball Table | The Foosball Shop | TheFoosballShop.com, www.thefoosballshop.com/foosball-table.htm. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This is an article which describes the process of how someone had already built a foosball table. This will be very helpful in terms of helping me with my process and how I should order things. This will be similar to the other source which had described making a foosball table in the sense that it will help me develop a budget for my project. The audience for this source will be anyone who wants to make a foosball table. This is not very complex language and I think this could be for almost anyone. In terms of biases, I don’t there are any biases because there isn’t a motive for the author to be biased.

Ülker, Onur. “Wood Adhesives and Bonding Theory.” Intech Open, IntechOpen, 23 Nov. 2016, www.intechopen.com/books/adhesives-applications-and-properties/wood-adhesives-and-bonding-theory.

This is a scientific study which explains different adhesives for wood. This will be important in my project because it will be important to know because understanding how good bonds together will be essential in my project. The audience for this is highly educated people who are interested in different properties and material science. There don’t seem to any biases in this source because it is a research study. This corporation has a reputation to uphold and they would not intentionally give bad information. This corporation has the name China on it and China is a big country which doesn't like to look bad.

Episode 1: The Literal and the Figurative

This episode is about the novel 1984 by George Orwell. We begin the podcast by discussing the history of the creation of the novel and the inspiration for the novel. We continue by giveing a short summary about the sections of the novel we have read so far. Once all the context for the discussion is given, we begin by focusing on the character of Julia. We talk about her intentions and reasons for the commiting the actions she does. Moving on to the main character we begin a comparison of the two seeing how they are contradictory characters yet end up together in a relationship of sorts. Then we continue to talk about the language of the novel and how they are limited in their speech. The language of newspeak has a very limited vocabulary and character are never really able to truly express themselves. Lastly we end off the discussion by talking about the big oxymorons which are shown throughout the novel.

Life Choice Game Manual // Kamil and Maciej

Posted by Kamil Kielar in College English · Giknis · C Band on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at 1:50 pm

Life Choice

Goal: Get to the end of the road with the most amount of Life Points.

Setup:

The game can be played with as little as two people or as many as six. Each player begins the game by taking a game piece and placing their piece on the beginning tile of the Road. The deck of Food cards is first shuffled and each player is given three food and given three Life Point cards to begin the game. Each player rolls the die to see who goes first.

Place each of the piles of cards in each of the corresponding places that are drawn on the board.

Gameplay:

Players will roll a die to determine the number of spaces they will move forward. At intersections, players are forced to make a choice of the path they wish to take. The length of the paths along with the types of tiles along each of the paths will never be same. The players must make decisions accordingly to their current situation. When a player reaches an intersection and according to the roll of their die, they still have spaces to move forward with, they continue moving after selecting the path that the player wishes to take.

Throughout the games you have the chance of landing on one of three tiles; the Human Encounter tile, the Location Encounter, or a Food card.

Food Cards:

Each turn after each player first turn, they must pay one Food card at the start of their turn. Food cards can be obtained by landing on a tile with the food symbol on it or potentially through the Human Encounter cards or Location Encounters. If a player runs out of Food cards and is unable to pay a Food card, the player loses a life point per turn they cannot pay and their movement is reduced until they pay a Food card. Rolling a 1 or 2 allows the player to move only 1 space, a 3 or 4 allows the player to move only 2 spaces and rolling a 5 or 6 allows the player to move 3 spaces. This continues to go on until the player finds a food card for which they can pay for the very next turn.

When consuming a food card you discard from your hand into the designated area on the board. If you possess a food card labeled as +2 food, then after the consumption of one turn, place it down in front of you in a horizontal position to mark that it is half eaten. You must consume this food card the very next opportunity you receive to consume food and then discard it afterward.

When a player has no Food cards and is unable to pay, another player has the ability to donate a Food card to the player in order to prevent said player from losing a life point and having his movement reduced. In return for donating a food card the player which had given the donation receives one Life Point card. Donations of food can only be given when a player has no Food cards. If more than one player wishes to donate, they both roll the die and the player which rolls the higher number gets to donate and receives the life point. If they both roll the same number, players keep rolling until one rolls a higher number.

Many different food cards exist which will be available to the players. Some food cards will force you to sacrifice a Life point in order to use the food. Cards which force you to sacrifice Life points CANNOT be donated to other players. When a food card specifies that it counts as +2 food, it cannot be donated if it already is used once. When choosing to donate a card that has +2 food, you will in return receive +2 Life Points.

Human Encounter cards:

When a player lands on the Human Encounter tile, they draw a Human Encounter card. Carefully read the card and follow the instructions. Below are all the different Human Encounter cards which you may come across throughout the game.

  • Thief (Roll a dice: If the number is even you lose -1 food)

  • Cannibals (Roll a dice: If even you kill him and -1 Life Point. If odd, you run away move back 3 spaces (ignore tile))

  • Old guy (Option: Give him -1 food and gain a +1 Life Point // Ignore and lose -1 Life Point)

  • Army (Roll a dice: if number is 1, you move back 10 spaces (ignore tile)

  • Dog (Option: Consume him for +2 food and lose -2 Life Points. // Give him food for -1 food and gain +2 Life Points // Do nothing and lose -1 Life Point.)

After a player performs the action required on the card, they put the human encounter card back into the deck and the player that went BEFORE the player who had drawn the card must shuffle the deck. If a player is required to move spaces back and they reach a crossroad, they must continue back but once they move forward again they must take the opposite path (the one they had not taken prior to the moving spaces backwards). If a player is required to give up a Food card and does not possess any, they will be required to pay in Life points.

Other players are unable to cover any costs that human encounter cards ask for. If a player chooses to consume the dog for +2 food, hold onto that card and use as directed when holding a +2 food card (can be found in the food section above).

Location encounter cards:

When a player lands on the Location Encounter tile, they draw a Location Encounter card. Carefully read the card and follow the instructions. Below are all the different Location Encounter cards which you may come across throughout the game.

  • Gas Station (Roll a dice: If 1-4 draw +2 food. If 5-6 then lose -2 Life Points because you got exposed to a toxic substance.)

  • City block house (Roll a dice: If 1-2 draw +1 food. If 3-6 then move back 2 spaces (ignore tile))

  • Bunker (You found food! Draw 4 food cards)

  • Grand House (Roll a dice: if 1 or 2 you get caught by people move back 5 spaces and lose -1 Life point., If 3-6 you draw +2 food cards.)
Cabin (Roll a dice: If 1-3 draw +1 food. If 3-6 then you got spooked and dropped -2 food.)

After a player performs the action required on the card, they put the human encounter card back into the deck and the player that went BEFORE the player who had drawn the card must shuffle the deck. If a player is required to move spaces back and they reach a crossroad, they must continue back but once they move forward again they must take the opposite path (the one they had not taken prior to the moving spaces backward). If a player is required to give up a Food card and does not possess any, they will be required to pay in Life points.

Other players are unable to cover any costs that human encounter cards ask for.

End Game:

Once all players have reached the end, count up every player's Life Points and the player with the highest sum wins!!

Rational

The game Life Choice is a board game where players go throughout the game board facing different post-apocalyptic scenarios and are forced to make decisions which will determine their survival. Characters in The Road had been faced with various scenarios which they had to make a hard decision based not only on their physical needs but moral as well. We wanted to take this essence of decision making into our game and really hone in on why these decisions are made.

An inspiration for our game had been Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This is a pyramid which shows the basic needs of humans and then continues to possibilities of selflessness and individuality by people. The very core and foundation of our game closely related to the beginning of Maslow’s pyramids and that are the Food Cards. People need to satisfy their physical before they can think of anything else. These Food cards essentially are the physical needs of the players. Each turn, players must pay one Food card or else they are faced with harsh repercussion. This habitual payment each turn shows the daily need of food by the players. Now some of the Food cards factor into that difficult decision making forced onto the players. Some Food cards force the player to sacrifice a life card in order to avoid starvation or the repercussions. Life cards are most important in the game and are what determine the winner of the game. To sacrifice one would be a big decision for the player but that must be weighed against the players' physical needs. Now we have also implemented a factor of collaboration in the game where players have the ability to help each other out if they so choose. When a player runs out of food cards, another play may help that player out but it comes at the cost of food for them. A player wouldn’t want to sacrifice food if they didn’t have very much left but or the other hand, luck may be in their favor and a certain player may be plentiful with food and will be happy to help out. In return for such kindness, then the player donating food receives a life point, the essence of the game. This decision of donation may also be weighed by how close the player into the end of the game. In the Road, the father had not taken any of his food right before he had passed away and if a player is near the end, they may want to build up as much of their life points before the end. Life points determine the goodness of people and are not just based off of physical needs but emotional ones. Whether you help out others or do the right, moral thing and in the end, this is what really matters in life but moments in our lives are riddled with factors which don’t allow us to always to the right or selfless thing as can be seen in the novel.

With the game design, we incorporated an aspect that allows players to ‘challenge’ one another where they are able to roll die to steal each other's resources. This was a feature that allows players to intentionally harm other players, and to have that sense of survival where it is only their lives that matter in this world. It also proves that when you have the ability to harm others, people will almost always take it when it comes to winning the game.

When traveling through unknown areas, the path ahead of you isn’t clear and there certainly isn’t a single way of going about. We give the players to choose their path as they have to calculate the risks of both going the long way, with a higher chance of finding unraided places with food, or the shorter way with more danger. This also gives the players the sense of not being able to achieve the end, where you need to really think about your food supply and which route is more appropriate.

A reoccurring event that takes place in the food are these human and location encounters. It brings out the action of the book because due to these two there is a chance of finding more food to further to survive or another threat to their lives. These are a big aspect of the game as they dictate your journey going throughout the board, they help determine your food supply. To add the unpredictable factor with almost every location, we designed the cards so that almost every card could be both beneficial or detrimental. This was due to the reality to honestly not knowing what each location can possibly hold in store for the protagonists. There were also some morality cards where the player has to choose what to do when encountering certain people, all having their different outcomes. This was a strong addition because we saw throughout the book that the man and the boy clashed with what to when encountering certain people and now we give the player that same choice with no one else to counteract their decision.

Advanced Essay #3: School Acceptance

Posted by Kamil Kielar in English 3 · Block · E Band on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 11:53 pm

Introduction

My goals for this essay had been to use sources and analyze sources well. I really wanted to try and make sure that my sources made sense and had been chosen well in order to fit the theme of the essay. I know that which sources you choose can make your essay amazing or simply not work so I had spent a lot of time searching for the right sources and the right quotes. Something that I am proud of is my thesis along with my theme. I think it is an interesting topic and had been unique as well. There are not many people which would have gone down the route I had and i think my originality is what I am proud of. An area for improvement is my analysis. I think could have done a bit more analysis and that would have strengthened my argument.

White Acceptance

Growing up I was told we were all unique, there is something special about all of us. Something that we can all identify from and call our own. This is a lie. Some people are unique, others are generic and basic. I’m part of that basic category. I'm white, I don’t have any disabilities, no allergies, and worst of all, I'm from Europe. So the whitest of the white.

When applying to college we all as students seek to stand out from the thousands of other applicants that apply to the school you absolutely want. Pristine colleges such as Harvard University say that they value “Growth and potential” but this idea is completely dependent on the person reviewing your application. One man could see you as the perfect applicant but another simply doesn’t think your the right fit. It is absolutely true that an amazing transcript and an amazing SAT score will raise your chances of getting into the college of your dreams but that many of the won’t even help with the cruel and unjust societal system which plagues our school admission system. Due to the mandatory requirement of racial diversity, the admission offices in colleges deny qualified students and accepts less qualified applicants, lowering standards and expectations for some while unjustly raising standards and expectations for others simply because of their race.

Schools base their opinion not off of your transcript but on how many of you there already are. We can all be grouped. Colleges group their students based off of their race and it is in no way a system which produces the most academically capable students and instead creates a damaging culture for minorities.

A study done by Princeton University had showed that white students had to score 340 points more on their SAT to have the same chances of admission. When compared to hispanics, whites would have to score 130 points higher to have the same chances of admission. This is unacceptable and simply not right for discrimination like this to occur. In that same study, it had shown that Asians have an even larger disadvantage. An SAT score of a 1500 by an Asian student, would have the same chance of admission as a black student who had an SAT score of 1020. By enforcing such policies we decrease the quality of work and lead to a lack of caring among students because they don’t have to commit as much effort as others. Hard Work, discipline, and achievement in academics should be rewarded. A reward should not be given to a student simply because they are a certain race and someone should not be punished for not being a certain race.

During the civil rights movement, a new law had been put into place called Affirmative Action. According to the NCSL, “Affirmative action policies are those in which an institution or organization actively engages in efforts to improve opportunities for historically excluded groups in American society.” The purpose of this program and the effects of it, do not align a single bit. In an interview conducted by BBC, a student had stated that “During law school I had a male classmate talk to me about how he believed that I that was admitted to the law school simply because of affirmative action...there was a number of white applicants, particularly white male applicants, who were qualified and denied admission to our law school simply because the school had a commitment to diversity on campus.” With this wrongful prioritization of diversity on the Campus and enaction of such a program, students are discriminated all while having every one of their achievements demeaned. We should believe in students and their ability to get into a school if they put in the effort but when we hand them this acceptance letter simply because of their skin color, we insult them by disbelief of their ability to achieve it on their own.

The longer such actions continue, the worst the problem will get. The lack of caring, the normalization of privilege, and the loss of incentive will continue to grow in the minority society. College acceptance is not a right, it is an accomplishment of the highest level for those who have truly earned it.

I’ve worked hard to get to where I am right now. Others have even harder and I give them credit for that. For every hour I spent studying, someone spent two. Those are the students who should be accepted and enrolled in the most pristine colleges. I am white. I admit it's a part of me. But it's not what defines me. I can just pray when the time comes, white isn’t all they’ll see.

Advanced Essay #2: Silence

Posted by Kamil Kielar in English 3 · Block · E Band on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 9:27 pm

Introduction

This essay is about sensitivity in society today and the silencing of literacy today. People are too scared to speak their opinion because people keep telling them its offensive and through this essay I had explained the ideas which surround the silencing of people. This had been the goal, to portray this idea to the world. One thing I am proud of is the analysis on the quote and I think it had been used well and supported my argument clearly. Improvements for my essay in the future, I would like to have a better written, stronger scene. I think that it is the section which needs the most work.

Advanced Essay

As a child, I had grown up in a majority white neighborhood and went to a majority white elementary school. Then I had changed schools in middle school and suddenly, half of my new class had been African American. This was a new experience for me and I didn’t really know what to do. I could tell they had been different from me in appearance but I still didn’t know if they had been different from me in any other way. I was still innocent at the time and more curious than I should have been.

We had been watching a movie in class and there had been a short scene where this little boy a been pretending to be this gangster with his friend and I didn’t know why they would want to act like that. After the movie, I had raised my hand and asked my teacher, “Why are those kids acting like thugs cause I had thought that thugs weren’t supposed to be good people?”

The response that my teacher gave had been some kind of nonsense about kids imagination which I as a kid bought but the key thing that I remember from that day is this kid from across the classroom calling out, “They were trying to act black.” To this day I don’t know who it was but what I do know is what my teacher did in response to it was not the right thing.

“Be quiet, and don’t say something like that ever again,” with a stern and serious look on his face. I was scared. I thought it had simply been an attempted joke but according to my teacher is was like forbidden language. Today I understand the comment had been racist but when I was a child, I didn’t get the explanation I needed.

All throughout middle school I remembered living is worry that I might say something about black people that may offend them. It was hard because I didn’t understand what was right and what was wrong so my choice was just to stay silent. Not a single word had come out of my mouth whenever anything about black people had come up.

If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it.

Every student hears this in school but what defines something as not nice. Something you say to one kid may mean something else to another kid. The only things this statement does is silence students and instill fear into them that language isn’t free to speak and thought is not free to think. This idea poisoned me and still poisons the lives of students all over the US.

In the story How to Tame a Wild Tongue, they had been talking about how you cannot adopt an accent into a language but instead, you must get rid of it all together and the author makes the claim, “Wild tongues can’t be tamed, they can only be cut out,”(Anzaldúa). When people are offended by a specific phrase, they aim to suppress it or ban it all together. As more and more thing become considered “offensive” by society, we will have a world full of mute men and women who dare not to say a word. When relating this quote to this theme, it states we cannot control the use of offensive language, we must discard it and language cannot be discarded. Every word has to mean, and to every person, that meaning is different. As a society, we should understand that that words spoken should not be taken in our own perspective but in the speaker's perspective.

The easy choice is to be silent, the harder decision is to speak.

It does not take a lot of effort to sit in a classroom quietly all day and then at the end of the day just leave and go home. It takes courage and strength to speak about what your opinions and what you believe it. Instead of focusing how some words offend you, you should focus on the message they are trying to get across. Show compassion and empathy for them and put yourself in their shoes. It is not easy to raise your hand and confidently speak to the class. Any teacher would prefer to hear people’s unique perspectives rather than nothing at all.

The world is slowly becoming silenced and slowing our growth as a society. People’s sensitivity is driving this silence which is putting our advancement as a society to a stalemate. People should speak their opinion, every opinion should be heard no matter the topic, and those opinions should be understood rather than silenced. This is the only way we will progress as a society.

Advanced Essay #1: The Next Chapter

Posted by Kamil Kielar in English 3 · Block · E Band on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 6:13 pm
Introduction

In this essay I hoped the show that the past does not define who we are and even though we do remember where we had come from, it doesn't make up our present self. Everyone has a past which they define themselves with but that needs to be let go in order for people to find out who they can become. Something that I am really proud of is my metaphor used in the essay about my book of memories. Something that I hope to improve on is to make shorter, more concise scenes. I think that I need to work on writing less and saying more.

The Next Chapter

My mom walked over to me and sat down. She looked at me with that we need to talk face and asked, “Have you decided yet?”

“No, I’ll tell you tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow’s the last day, you won’t have any more time than that.”

“I know,” I said while getting up and going to my room.

I can remember in only fifth grade, my mom had taken me out of Catholic school and put me into a charter school. I had to start my life over, make new friends, get to know new teachers. Eventually, I did it, but in the back of mind, I can still remember my Catholic school friends. I love these new friends of mine, and I hope to always remember them.  I don’t want for them to turn into memories of good times. I want to make more of those good times, but can I do that on my own?

I have the choice to stay with my friends but I’m being drawn to another high school. Science Leadership Academy didn’t even exist in mind until my friend told me about.  He seemed to be on top of everything with open houses and applications for schools but I didn’t care that much about it. I’ll still be able to talk to him, even if we're in different schools. We may not see each other as much but we’ll still remember each other. I said the same things to my friends in fifth grade and that didn’t happen. Everything I am is because of my friends and going to high school, people will see me but in myself, I can only see my friends.

It was hard but I did what I thought was best for myself. Looking back on my decision as a junior, I still question myself what it would have been like if I decided to do something else. This summer when I had visited my family all the way in Poland I thought the same thing.

I had got to get to know my cousins, I’d spent time with my grandparents and, I had even had the chance to experience a Polish wedding. It was such an incredible time for me to be able to experience a different life that I could have lived. I can still picture it in my head, the beautifully trimmed grass, the rows of raspberry bushes next to a field of strawberries, all right outside our house. At night we would light bonfires six feet high and cook polish sausages, but the thing I remember the most and will miss the most was the stars. Every night I would lay down in the peace and quiet, and look at every bright star in the sky. This was something I could never do at home. My parents grew up here yet they left it all behind to come to the US.

Chapter after chapter was written in their book of memories but before it could be finished, they stopped writing it and began another. After years of work, editing, and perfecting it was all left behind. A life project changed in an instant.

The very first time I had visited my family in Poland, I was able to see a glimpse of the forgotten book. I had the chance to pick cherries for the first time and learned how to start a fire but my most vivid memory was that of my great-grandmother. She was what you would expect an old lady to be, shriveled up, fragile, with snowy white hair. I remember sitting there in the log house, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how she could live here for so long. No running water. No heating. No cooling. I sat there on this old wooden chair in front of her while she talked about how lucky she was to see her great-grandchildren.

After a while, we had to leave and we began to say our goodbyes but what she said to me I can still clearly remember to this day, “I’m so happy I had the chance to meet my great grandkids, even if it was only once.” When she said that last statement I froze in shock. I was at a loss for words.

I told her, “We’ll come back and visit you, we’ll see each other again.”

I couldn’t live up to my words.

It is only after our greatest losses that we can truly understand their worth. My great-grandmother will always be remembered, my friends will always be remembered, and my parents will always remember where they came from. The past does not decide who we will become, but it does help us remember what we have been through. I see now that we never stop writing our book of memories. Unless our first chapters are only the beginning, we will never be able to clearly write the next one.

Lord of the Flies Essay

Empathy vs. Ego

For many fear is not something pleasurable which they experience. When people think of fear they add a negative connotation towards it and a sense of dislike for it. However, when it is not our fear which is on the line, the courage to overcome the fear is taken for granted and not realized by others until they are put into that same position. We always encourage our friends to face their fears, but would we ourselves take the advice we give to others? Everyone has been in a situation where they are trying to overcome one of their fears and understand the difficulty of the situation. Where is the empathy expressed with other emotions such as sadness or joy? When fear is expressed by others, empathy is lost in our response due to the desire of disbelief that we never experienced fear.

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, he tells a story of young boys stranded on an island struggling to keep their civil nature and not fall into primal instincts and savagery amongst themselves. They, however, are unable to hold onto themselves, losing all sense of morality. When one of the younger boys shows fear of a beast on the island, he brings it up to the older boys. They, however, shrug it off as if it is nothing at all. They don’t even in any way show consideration that maybe something is on the island. Jack, one of the older boys, simply tells them, "…fear can't hurt you any more than a dream. There aren't any beasts to be afraid of on this island . . . Serve you right if something did get you, you useless lot of cry-babies!"(82)

Since the older boys have outgrown believing in monsters, they understand that there isn’t a something out to get them  but they are still young enough to remember they were once that age and had experienced the same thing. Jack even goes out of his way to call these kids names for believing in such things but by doing so he proves the emotion that is going through him. Internally his ego is battling the fact that he was once like those kids and wants to forget that part of him. But through denying the existence of this monster he is avoiding having to fear it himself. For Jack, it is simply the easiest path to irrationalize the idea because then no justification is needed for neither himself nor the little kids.

Children have some of the most creative and unique minds but a majority of the time are shut out by grown-ups. Kids can come up with these crazy ideas and when brought up, they are immediately shot down with denial from their parent without actual real thought because we want to think that because they are younger, they don’t have the same higher level thinking as us and therefore cannot come up with an “intelligent” idea. This case is especially accurate through children who are not taken seriously. According to Peter Gray Ph.D., he states that “When your child screams at being put to bed alone at night, your child is not trying to test your will! Your child is screaming, truly, for dear life.” This simply shows how we react to someone else's fear without considering the possibility that it may be real. Instead of thinking about the situation, it is simpler to believe something just because it is easier. It is easier to think that as children we wanted our parents rather than we had actually been scared. The fact that so many parents do not even take this into consideration shows how much they don’t want to believe the fact as well. Fear for your own life is an extremely powerful and traumatizing emotion and to have it be a possibility of what is happening to your child's and not even considering the scenario is shocking to me. Laziness is often considered a physical not wanting to work, but the laziness of mind is the greatest selfishness someone can commit.

When thoughts on the subject of the beast had been changed to Piggy, another protagonist in the story, he had also been unable to see things from the perspective of the kids. Instead, he had decided to take a more rational approach to this by saying, "Life […] is scientific, that's what it is. [...] I know there isn't no beast—not with claws and all that I mean—but I know there isn't no fear either."(84) For this particular character, he had wanted more of a logical response to the situation which gives him the ability to avoid having to deal with emotions at all but science can only take him so far. According to Charles L. Bennett, “...science doesn’t “prove” theories. Scientific measurements can only disprove theories…”(Dr. Jay Wile) This is important because the most Piggy can do is say that there is no “beastie” but that doesn’t include anything else which may be a threat to them on the islands. Throughout the novel, Piggy considers himself the “smart one” in the group and now even he is unable to prove that there is not something on the island trying to get them. This in a way a shot to his ego and pride. He doesn’t want to believe that it is true but if this logical approach had truly been done by Piggy, he would know this is definitely true. Rather than admitting the situation and hurting his pride he chooses to deny the story altogether.

In conclusion, fear can be expressed in many ways, but what people fail to realize is how they themselves perceive it. To ourselves it is something we are going to try and stay away from, to others, it will be something we help them overcome but never will mutual understanding of fear exist. Everyone experiences fear but don’t like to admit it. It is simpler to say you are fearless because you see other people react when being fearful. Naturally, people don’t want to bring themselves down and admitting to it one of the biggest drops someone can go through. Fear will always exist inside of us and we will always have a way to experience it ourselves but the way we see other’s fears can change our very understanding of fear itself.

E2U4 Spanish BM- Port Richmond

Posted by Kamil Kielar in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · B Band on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 8:10 am

El nombre de mi comunidad es Port Richmond. He vivido allí casi toda mi vida.

Posted by Kamil Kielar in Spanish 1 - Manuel - B on Sunday, March 27, 2016 at 1:20 pm

Kamil Kielar

Soy yo,

el hijo de padres inmigrantes,

producto de Polonia.

Primera de mi generación.

Veo el amanecer.

Oigo el gallo despertar a todo el mundo.

Huelo hierba recién cortada.

Saboreo fresas frescas recogidas.

Toco la brisa fresca.

Ando el camino del trabajo duro,

Yo trabajo para el  éxito y no espero.

Comienzo con el pie derecho y,

Empiezo a jugar el juego de la vida.

Somos productos de Polonia.

Somos Polacos,

La lengua de agricultura y las tradiciones.

No somos Americanos. Vivimos en América.

Polonia vive en mí, pero no tengo casa allí.

Cuatro mil millas de distancia,

Pero

Estamos siempre en su corazón.

Growing up Online

Posted by Kamil Kielar in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 10:39 am

1.) The TV we had watched in class was called Growing up Online.

2.)This show talked about how kids were affected online and how their entire lives changed after something that was put online. They had told us about a fight that happened in their school and that it was recorded and now whenever someone looks up the kids or the school they will see the video.

3.)The most memorable thing about this show was about the girl who was a model on the internet but in real life she was a nobody.

4.)Yes it is important to watch these shows because it teaches us about the dangers of the internet and shows us how much it can affect our lives.

5.)I will keep my future family safe online by not letting them have any social media until they are of appropriate age. Also I will block any websites that are inappropriate or unsafe to children.

6.)It is important to talk to family about internet safety because they need to know how dangerous the internet is and how it can affect your future.

7.)Some advice I would give to parents that have children online is to right away talk to your kids about the dangers of the internet and how one little mistake could affect their entire life.

Final Slide Design

Posted by Kamil Kielar in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 8:14 pm
Untitled presentation
1.) From the criticism I had received I had learned a lot more about what my slide should look like and how I was to present it. The first thing that I was told was that the color on the slide where far too bright and did not go well together. I had two colors as my background and I was told had it should only be one which is why I had changed that. Also my slide had multiple pictures on it and was all over the place and I had to stick with a single topic which is what I did. In my old slide I had many pictures that were all different colors which brings me to the last piece of criticism. I was told that it would be much simpler and neater to have one big picture that shows my topic quickly instead of having multiple ideas on the slide.

2.)The first change I had made was the color because before it was bright and slightly difficult to read so I had changed it to something darker so if I put white writing it would stand out more. I had gotten rid of all my pictures because I felt as if they didn't go with my main idea. My old slide did have a title but I saw that it was better to put large words that had meaning to them because it gave to the reader something to think about what kind of person I am.

Kielar Me slide

Posted by Kamil Kielar in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 11:28 am
Untitled presentation

This one slide shows all the things about me and what had inspired me. I had began making this slide by adding a large title in order to get the reader’s attention. The title tells you what the slide is and explains that this entire slide is about me, Kamil Kielar. When learning about making slides it was explained that the slides must be very visual in order to be noticed by others better so in order to do this I had added countless pictures. Also the colors chosen for this slide where very bright and go well with each other giving the slide a theme. Contrast had also played a very important role in my slide. Every color way mostly light except for the big picture in the middle. It allows the reader to pay attention to this picture allowing them perceive it as more important. Last I had used size variation in my pictures to show the readers which things are more essential to my personality.

The things I had put in my slide show the stuff that is most important to me and past memories that have stayed with me for all these years. The first picture to the left shows my nationality and where I had come from. I was born in Poland and speak the language every single day. This is one of the most important thing in my life. Next is the big A right under thing the flag. For my entire life my parents have pushed me to my limits and all my life teachers had always expected more from me. Academics has always been an important part of my life. Through my academic I hope to go to MIT or some other good college. Out of all the memories I remember the biggest one I think is my car crash. I was in a big accident where my entire car had flipped over but luckily no one was hurt. Then is one of my favorite shows is Two and a Half Men. I like to watch this show and find it very entertaining. Last is one of my favorite quotes. This quote has defined me as a person and changed my future.

Kielar Reflection

hi
Today in class we had watched a video about a little boy that was getting bullied. The bullies were doing all these mean thing to him and you could help him out by pressing this emoji. After you press the emoji the bullies do nice things to him instead bullying him. When I had seen this video I had felt so emotionally touched and bad for him. I remember when I was younger I was bullied by some kids but then I just learned to ignore it and ever since nothing has been able to really offend me. Online I am a complete ghost. I have never have a single social media and never felt as if I need one. Based on this appearance I think people tend to ignore me completely online which is both good and bad. In my opinion the goal for an internet troll is to annoy you and make you feel bad about yourself. The positive side of being anonymous is no one can bully you because you don't exist but the downside is you cannot interact with friend and be able to talk to them even though your not next to them physically.

My home network Kielar

Posted by Kamil Kielar in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Monday, October 12, 2015 at 2:04 pm
My home network begins with the internet being transmitted into my modem/router. Next are the two devices that are hard wired in are my smart TV and desktop computer. Both of these devices are connected to my modem/router through an Ethernet cable. Then my combination of a modem and router allows wifi to be wirelessly distributed throughout my home and a set of devices are connected to this signal. Those devices are two laptops, four phones, an ipad, an X-Box 360, and a printer. This is my home network. Some thing I had learned about networks is all of this connection happens so quickly. I had been so surprised when we had learned about the really long journey the parts for a website take and the speed at which they complete this journey is incredible. Something that i would tell people about having a home network is that with a little bit of work anyone can find everything that you did on the internet. All the things you went on can be found and nothing is truly ever deleted. These are the things that that i would like for people to know about having a home network.
