Jamekea S. Lee Capstone

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Capstone - Kay - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 1:34 pm
Abstract

For my capstone I mentored young girls at my old middle school every Wednesday for eight weeks. Each week we discussed different topics such as, Social Media, Family and Friends, Violence, School, Society Views, and Self- Respect. As we had our discussion there was also assignments that the girl had to work on, which were all based on the topic of discussion. The goal of this capstone was to understand how young girls think, how the react, and what influence their actions. Each of the young girls had a journal which they wrote in just about every week about how they was feeling and I responded back to them each week. Through the course of the program I learned so much about these girls. I went in expecting them to be distanced and unwilling to work but they were open and allowed me to get personal. I learned that some young girls only need for someone to take the time out of their day and just listen, listen to their feelings and thoughts, knowing that they wouldn’t be judge. They made me realize that no matter what age you are, you’re still vulnerable and want people to be there for you, no matter how strong you are. This was a learning experience for not only the girls but for me.

I chose to use this online book as a source because I think it’ll be a interesting read and it would help with my capstone. The book is about Black Racial Identity and the perceptions of it, I think it would be interesting to “learn” in a way about how blacks are looked at in society. If I learn more about how blacks are looked at in society, then I can teach the girls and tell them why it’s important to have a good character so society can have more respect for themselves. I’ll incorporate my findings into my work.

"Community Violence: The Effects on Children." The Child Study Center. NYU Langone Medical Center. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.aboutourkids.org/articles/community_violence_effects_children>.

This source is reliable because it breaks down how the community a child lives in can play a part in their behavior. If a child grows up in a bad neighborhood, then they will have bad tendencies because they don’t necessarily have the right role models to follow. I can like at this source as a what-not-to-do, and try to be a good role model for the girls I’m teaching. This source isn’t the go to source for everything though, I wouldn’t use this as what-to-do source but I’ll definitely use this as a fallback source.

DuRant, Robert, Chris Cadenhead, Robert Pendergrast, Greg Slavens, and Charles Linder. Factors Associated with the Use of Violence among Urban Black Adolescents. 84. 1994. <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1614778/pdf/amjph00455-0086.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it was a study to examine social and psychological factors associated with black adolescence. This sources relates to my capstone because I’m studying why black adolescent girls have little respect for themselves. This source states how community played a role in their decisions, I also think that community plays a role in the way black girls choose to represent themselves to the world. This source is very reliable and helpful for my capstone. I’ll use this source as the basis of my curriculum and to help plan out my activities for my capstone.

Galbreath, Lydia. Philosophy of the African American Identity Crisis: A Double Consciousness Exploration (2011): n.pag. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://urpasheville.org/proceedings/ncur2011/papers/NP50231.pdf>.

I chose to use this as a source because it’s about black racial identity which will help with my capstone. This source looks thoroughly into the Double Consciousness Theory and the role it plays in the African American lives. I found this source very reliable because it’s study and an overview of the African American culture and their lives. It’s a good source about the black society and how it’s viewed by people from other ethnicities, which will help me explain my reasoning for my capstone to the kids. It will help a lot with my curriculum and what I’m trying to do with my capstone.

Khattri, Nidhi, Kevin W. Riley, and Michael B. Kane.Students At Risk in Poor, Rural Areas: A Review ofthe Research. Pelavin Research Institute. 13, No.2. Journal of Research in Rural Education, 79-100. Web. <http://www.jrre.psu.edu/articles/v13,n2,p79-100,Khattri.pdf>.

This source is very reliable because it’s a online excerpt from a book published by people affiliated with Pelvain Research Institution. The book is about students who may be at risk in poor, rural areas which relates to my capstone because I’m working at a middle school in North Philly which is in a rural neighborhood. I can use the information I get from this source and feed it to my audience. I can teach about the risk they are at and how to prevent falling into traps of living in such a community. This source will help me spread information about how much community influences an individual behaviors.

"Middle School Survival." Understanding and Raising Girls. PBSParents. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <https://www.pbs.org/parents/raisinggirls/friends/mid1.html>.

I chose to use this source as a reference because it about middle school girls behavior. This source breaks down why some middle school girls act out in school and why their behavior may be bad. This source is a great start for me understanding the minds of middle school girl, while it may not be the best thing when trying to fully understand middle school girls, it is a good starting point. I can reflect on this site when I feel as though I’m having a hard time with the girls, this source will give me understanding of what’s going on.

"Parenting, the Social Environment and its Effects on Child Development." Virtual Medical Centre. Virtual Medical Centre, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.myvmc.com/lifestyles/parenting-the-social-environment-and-its-effects-on-child-development/>.

I think this source is reliable because it breaks down everything about parenting and social environmental effects on child development. My capstone was originally about how parents and the environment plays a major role in a child’s life but I changed it around a bit because I thought it was too broad and would cause a lot of problems. However, I will touch on the topic in a more settle and discreet way, so this source is good for me to pull information from. This source is also reliable for me to reflect on and even show the girls so they can look at it too.

Popkin, Susan J., Tama Leventhal, and Gretchen Weismann. Girls in the 'Hood: How Safety Affects the Life Chances of Low-Income Girls. Urban Affairs Review, Web. <http://www.dedoose.com/PDF/Publications/Popkin, Leventhal, Weismann_2010_Girls in the Hood.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it relates a lot to my capstone. For my capstone I’m talking to 6th grade girls about self respect. Rather me taking up eight weeks to talk just about self respect, I want to give them facts about more things. Such as how society views them and what messages they’re sending out to society. I want to show the girls the long term effect of the choices they are making at such a young age. By referencing this site, I’ll be able to show them the work of people who actually study these sorts of things and that will helpfully help them understand more.

Stack, Carol. All Our Kin: Strategies for Survival in a Black Community. New York: Basic Books, A Member of the Perseus Books Group, 1997. 22-57. Web. <http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=kDarMIro39YC&oi=fnd&pg=PR7&dq=black+adolescent+community&ots=K_7thnXl7V&sig=qv2s3ClE3Iifbot23Bu1BOqHNxU#v=onepage&q=black%20adolescent%20community&f=false

This source is very reliable for my capstone because within the book it has chapters about black communities and how they play a major role in black adolescents lives. I thought the chapters within the book were helpful in helping me understand more about the black community. Even though I’m from a black community, it’s good to have another insight about it from other people.  This source will be very reliable for getting information that I’ll need to complete my capstone and to help others understand my capstone. I’ll not only give people of different ethnicity a view of the black community but it will give African Americans a view of the black community.

"Youth in Action: Teens Forming Teens." What Kids Can Do. What Can Kids Do, Inc. Web. 29 Jan 2014. <http://www.whatkidscando.org/featurestories/2008/08_youth_in_action/index.html>.

When I reviewed this site I was looking to find articles about young black adolescence and their behavior. However, I was surprised when I seen a featured story about teens helping teens because it relates a lot to my capstone. This article helped me understand how to approach my audience in a more fun and interesting way rather than just laying facts out to them. It inspired me to make activities where they’ll teach me about their experiences and the reasons for the decisions they make. Although this source isn’t reliable for my whole capstone it is a good starting point for the activities I’m going to make.

Click this HipstaShakur

  • What did you set out to do?
My goal for this project was to show people who I really am, have them enter into my mind and see how I think. I wanted for people to get to know me better because people really don't know anything about me besides the things they heard.

  • How does your work incorporate the art of storytelling?
My work incorporate the art of storytelling because it tells my stories. Each poem is a story about me and is something that I've been through and experienced. Each poem shows how I handled hard situations, failure and rejections.

  • What do you hope your audience gains from your work?
I hope my audience gets to see me for who I am and not who they think I am.

  • What did you gain from doing this work.
I gain a sense of expectance from this project. Not from others but from myself. I allowed myself to be open and not care how people treat me after they see my work. I am me and nobody going to change that so they might as well accept me for me.

When I take selfies I try to portray things that are apart of my life. Some of my selfies won't make seem to some people because they don't understand what's going on in my mind. I have a weird and imaginative mind. I know that they say that the eyes are the windows to the soul, so sometimes I try to make my eyes the main attraction of the photo. People have many perceptions of me, some are true and some aren’t true. I try to get people to understand that I’m just different and I do different things. That’s all.

Sometimes I don’t mean anything when I take selfies. I just take them just to take them because I’m bored. Sometimes I don’t really care about what other people think and I want people to know that, which is why my face is always stern when I’m around certain people. However, when I’m with my friends outside of school, there’s another side of me, that people in this school would never see.

Quarter 4 Art

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Art - Senior Art - Hull - A on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 9:02 pm
This quarter, I decided to try my hand at things that I've never done before. Such as the self portrait, I was never able to do so because every time I tried it didn't come out as nicely as I would want it to. However, after practicing over the years, I finally was able to draw something that looked nice to me. While it's not in depth as it should be because I'm still not so good with art, it is the basic outline of me. I like it a lot because it shows my hard work.

This quarter I also decided to draw more fun work. I worked to try my hand at more complicated and advanced art, even though it's not perfect. It's still my art work and I'm proud of it.

How Does One Find Peace?

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Globalization - Block - D on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 2:57 pm
In Globalization class, I read the book In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner. The book is about an 8 year-old girl Raami  who's family taken into custody by the Khmer Rouge during the Cambodian genocide. Raami and her family faced many hardships and obstacles that seem like they were impossible to overcome, however she managed to find peace through it all and move on with life. I chose to create an info-graphic about peace because it is a necessity of life and necessary for true happiness.

Jamekea's Food Project

Pasta Salad

Recipe:

Ingredients:

Rotini Noodles, 1 red pepper, 1 yello pepper, broccoli, salad seasoning, italian dressing, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.

Directions:

Step 1: boil water for 20 mins
Step 2: prep vegetables; dice red and yellow peppers
Step 3: add rotini noddles into water
Step 4: cover pot for 20 or until rotini noodles are fully cooked; check occasionally
Step 5: boil another pot of water with broccoli for 5-10 mins; broccoli should not be fully cooked
Step 6: turn off pot with rotini noodles once fully cooked
Step 7: pour noodles into  mixing bowl
Step 8: turn off pot with broccoli
Step 9: add broccoli into mixing bowl with rotini noodles
Step 10: add diced red and yellow peppers into mixing bowl; stir it all together
Step 11: add Italian dressing
Step 12: sparkle Parmesan cheese on top
Step 13: sparkle salad seasoning on top
Step 14: put top on mixing bowl
Step 15: Shake mixing bowl
Step 16: sit in refrigerator until cool
Step 17: serve

Analysis:

All the ingredients in my dish is healthy and good for you. I used fresh products and made the whole dish from scratch so that way I knew what was going in it. This dish isn't necessarily organic because I used rotini pasta noodles however the vegetables I used are. The red and yellow peppers and broccoli was made natural without any harsh chemicals. This dish is something I really like but since some people like to put crab meat in it, which I'm allergic to I wanted to make it my own by not adding crab meat. Plus crab meat really isn't organic and healthy. And this is a really popular dish in my family.

During this course I learn more than I was expecting to learn. This was a really interesting class and I enjoyed it a lot. In this class I learned what my larger role in the food system was, how a baby’s brain develops, neuroscience about criminals, etc. I wan’t expecting to learn how a baby’s brain develops or the effects nutrition and nurture has on a person for their lifetime. I learned that I have a huge role to play in the food system because I’m the one eating the food and I eat what I eat eats, which was something I didn’t really think about before. It got me thinking about changing the way I ate but then again at the same type I didn’t really find another wrong with the way I eat. Since we all are going to die anyways there’s no need to really try to eat better.

During the course of the class, I had some ups and downs and I got frustrated at times because I didn’t understand what was going on. However I was to overcome the obstacles I had and fall back into flow with the rest of the class. I ending up doing all good both quarters and I have the grades to prove it. This was one of the best classes I’ve ever had, it was interesting and thought provoking.

Art History

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Art - Senior Art - Hull - A on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 5:26 pm
The master I chose to copy was Piet Mondrian because I found out that he was one of the first people to do color block paintings which are one of my favorite types. While I was looking up his life story and some of his other work I found them very interesting and unique. It’s like they spoke to me in a way.

Piet Mondrian was born in Amersfoort, Netherlands on March 7,1872. As a young boy his family moved to Winterswijk in the east of the country where he was introduced to art at a very early age. His father Pieter Cornelius Mordriaan was a drawing teacher as well as his uncle Fritz Mondriaan.

In 1892, Mondrian entered the Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam and began his career as a teacher in Primary Education, but he also practiced painting. Most of his paintings were landscapes of his native country such as , windmills, fields and rivers.

In 1911, Mondrian moved to Paris and changed his name by dropping an “a” from Mondriaan to show his departure from The Netherlands. While in Paris he was influenced by the Cubist style of Picasso and George Braque and this appeared heavily in his work.

In 1938, Mondrian left Paris and moved to London. After the Netherlands were invaded and Paris fell in 1940 he left London for Manhattan, where he remained until his death.

After his death, two Mondrian friends opened an exhibit known as “The Wall Works.” They have been exhibited twice sine Mondrian’s death at Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art (1983/1995-96), once in SoHo at the Carpenter + Hochman Gallery (1984), once each at Galerie Tokoro in Tokyo, Japan (1993), the XXII Biennial of Sao Paulo (1994), The University of Michigan (1995) and for the first time in Europe at the Akademie der Kunste (Academy of The Arts), in Berlin (February 22- April 22, 2007).

School District Closing - Process Paper

Posted by Jamekea Lee in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 8:28 am

For the most part, I really liked this project because it was fun and I had a lot of wiggle room. I was allowed to promote and spread my word, something I never got to do before. I always wanted to show the world what I care about in life. What I think is important and I got the chance to do that with this project. I got the chance to promote my own work, something that I helped put together and that was great.

But I’m not going to make it seem as though it was a easy thing to do. There was days that I stressed out about whether people would like our page, videos and view our website. I was worried that my friends would ignore it because they thought it was spam or that I was being weird. I guess I’m always that one person who worries about what other people have to say about me. By me stressing out about that, I started to feel as though I was bringing my group down because I didn’t have any faith.

If I would have been more supportive and had positive thoughts, I might could’ve been able to promote our stuff even more. Another thing I did was set our campaign on a pedestal and when we failed to reach, I felt bad. My expectations were way too high and I didn’t realize that until we got results. But the results are still good whether we reached my expectations or not.

Overall, I managed to get our campaign out there to people who I know will help promote it. And by me doing that, it raised my spirits as well as my group mates. Now I know what that big numbers and views doesn’t happen over night. And that it takes more than two weeks to get a campaign well known. But this was a great project because it taught me patience is key and not to get big headed with things. We all was able to set goals and reach them. And I think we as a group did a spectacular good with our campaign.

Source 1: Religious Person:

My stakeholder decided to stay anonymous

  • Can we use your name to quote you or would you like to stay anonymous? If so what is your name?

  • Do you think the teens in philadelphia are safe?

  • Why is it that you have that opinion?

  • Do you think Mayor Nutter is doing a good job handling the safety of teenagers?

  • Can you name any events in Philadelphia that has threatened the safety of teenagers?

  • Do you like the curfew?

  • Do you think the curfew has helped?

  • Why do you think teenagers break the curfew?

  • What do you think the Leaders of Philadelphia have to do to make teenagers safe?

  1. stay anonymous.

  2. no

  3. too much free time

  4. the closing of schools, rec. centers, and no jobs.

  5. no

  6. no

  7. because it's a law, teens need adventure

  8. go back to # 4

This is what he emailed me the first time, however when I asked him to be more thorough on what he meant, he sent me this letter:

        Ms. Lee;

I got my numbers wrong. To explain better, the questions you asked were based on the safety of teens and the city leaders actions toward their being.

Safety is not only for teens but all the people should be the concept of your study because you cannot study one without the other. For example, let's talk about affordable housing and jobs. If one's parents work, they can live in a home and raise a family in a environment that can be considered a good area.

With that in mind, everything will fall in place, as to the safety of the teens and everyone else. People care about themselves when they feel good, look good and got money. But,when things take a 180 degree turn, it's bad for everyone. Such as to the city's budget and the proposed cuts of jobs, schools, rec. centers, libraries and etc. to save money. Who will suffer.

Actions like that will cause danger in the city because of the mental and physical state  people are in there is " No Money". Nothing and nobody is safe.

You see " everything is everything".

                                                                        Hope I helped

I decided to interview a religious person for my stakeholder, because I felt as though they would have a lot to say about the community that the church is in. This interview is influential because him spoke about not only the teenagers but the parents. You could really tell that he cared because he also wrote a letter that would help explain where he was coming from. I also think it’s important because people of the church works with the community to try and make it better. They go around the community trying to help people and make sure teens are on the right path. This is a reliable source because because it comes from a person who’s involved in the community.

Source 2: Article: Officials in Phila. Plan Curfews to Curb Teenage Violence

http://www.npr.org/2011/08/11/139507252/officials-in-phila-plan-curfews-to-curb-teen-violence

In this article it talked about how Mayor Nutter planned on setting the curfew time to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays because he thinks it’ll prevent teenagers from being able to mob up on people. In the article it also talked about how Mayor Nutter planned on punishing not only the mob participates but their parents also. It states that the parent will be punished also if the teenager is picked up. The first time will be a warning, but the second time they will have to pay a $500 file. It also states that police patrols will also be increased to help prevent the mobs from happening. This is an influential article because Mayor Nutter speaks on the actions and shows that he isn’t playing around, that he means business.

Source 3: Organization Website: Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention

http://www.ojjdp.gov/mpg/Philadelphia%20Youth%20Violence%20Reduction-MPGProgramDetail-603.aspx

This is a website about a organization called Philadelphia Youth Violence Reduction Program  (PYVP) which is a multi- agency that involved with many youth organizations and criminal justice agencies, that work together to help reduce the homicide rate of teenagers and put youth offenders on a positive path. The organization cooperated with the 24th/25th Police District to collect data about the homicide rate. In the data they collected it showed that since the opening of PYVP homicides rates are significantly lower. The organization is involves more than 10 public and private organizations with consist of 50 police officers, probation officers, and street workers. They go out to the houses of participants about 25 times a month to check in with them and make sure they are on the right track. I think this is a good website because can go to it to learn more about the program and how to get their children involved in it. If more police district get involved with the program it means that they’ll be able to prevent flash mobs from happening.

Source 4: Article: 9 Shot at Teen Party in Suburban Philadelphia

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/04/09/shot-teen-party-suburban-philly-1-dead/

In this article it talks about a shooting that took place at a teenage party in Chester, PA. In the shooting there were 9 teenagers shot and 2 dead, they were attending a party in a social hall that had been rented out for them when the shooting took place. Mayor Wendell Butler was disheartened at the scene as he told the Associated Press, he was also surprised to find 13- year olds from Philadelphia at the party. When he asked them how did they find out about the party, they told him, “It was on Facebook.” Since then Mayor Butler had declared a state of emergency and set the curfew time to 9 pm. Butler pilot a project to install new surveillance cameras in the areas of high rate crimes. I think that this in an influential article because it talks about how the Mayor of the Chester Pa. planned on being stricter with the kids by having surveillance cameras where teenagers hang out, with will allow them to see the activity that occurs.

Source 5: Nutter Fumes After 3 Philadelphia Teens Killed in Apparent Reprisal Shooting

http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2012/01/12/nutter-fumes-after-3-philadelphia-teens-killed-in-apparent-reprisal-shooting/

In this article Mayor Nutter spoke on a shooting that took place on a Tuesday night, he called the shooter a “dog.” The Mayor also told the parents of of the youth that they must teach them to “not to act like idiots and a-holes”, he was very furious in the article and it showed. Which is why I think this is a good source because it shows the reader that he actually cares. He also speaks about what the adult needs to do in order to control their kids. This is a credible source because it comes from a reliable news source, which is CBS Philly.

Physics Artist Statement

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Physics - Echols on Monday, November 26, 2012 at 7:30 am

The ideal of this project was to create a sculpture or something that represents yourself and make a circuit with it. It sounded pretty easy at first because it seemed that all you had to do was take a couple of lights and connect them to a battery, but it was more depth than that. During the process of creating my project, I changed my idea multiple times. At first I was going to use a mirror, and then a watch but I finally decided that I wanted to use a shirt for my project. Which was a pretty good idea at the end of the day.

The shirt I decided to use was a shirt that I got a couple of years ago, that I really didn’t use. I’m glad I keep the shirt because my circuit made it look more better, I might actually wear the shirt now. Anyways, the shirt I chosed was a shirt that had big red lips on it. I decided that I would use six christmas lights and have them light up in the center of the mouth. That way it draw attention to shirt. I decided to have three red lights and three white lights and I have them go red, white, red, etc. So that way it would be more interesting to look at. I also decided to have them in a parallel circuit that way all of my lights would be the same brightness.

Having the lights in a parallel circuit was better than having them in a series circuit because in a series the light bulbs are all on one branch which means more resistance. The more resistance there are means the harder it will be for the current to flow. While having the circuit in parallel form that there will less resistance going through a branch and that means the current will flow a little bit easier.

The way I had my circuit set was that there will be two branches and each branch will have three lights bulbs on it. My first branch had red, white and red light bulbs on it going in that order. My second branch had white, red and white light bulbs on it going in that order. When I was connecting the branches I first had to connect them in a series and then into parallel. Once I done that I had to connect a wire from each branch so that way each branch would get the same amount of battery ‘juice’.

After I done all of that I was able to get my circuit to light up and work, which was one of the best feelings I had throughout doing the project. Because during working on the project I came face to face with trails and errors. I had cut some of my wires too short and then some of my soldering where coming apart. That meant I had to do a lot of my work all over again. However after I reconnected my wires with electrical tape my circuit work once again. As you can see in the picture above. It’s a picture of final project that I’m very proud of.

Q4 Artist Statement

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 7:56 am
This quarter was my favorite quarter. I got to do anything I wanted to do. I felt really free this quarter. This quarter we had to do a lot of abstract, like emotion, motion and regular abstract. We also had to do close ups of the Mutter Museum garden, the Rodin Museum landscape and a Rodin Museum close up. I chose to do a grass landscape of the Rodin Museum, a close up of a leaf, and a part of the Mutter Museum. I also did a lot of abstract, I did abstract like every week.

When I first did abstract I did it wrong. I didn't realize that abstract had to be shapes, colors and lines. When I did the abstract emotion I took different pictures and cropped parts of them out. Then I but them together. That wasn't abstract! From that day on I started doing abstract right. My abstract motion is the swirls, the blocks are supposed to be looking like they are moving, and I did another drawing with swirls. My abstract drawings are underneath those pictures. After those pictures I have my close up pictures. I don't really like my close up picture of the Mutter Museum, that's the picture with the bush of plants. It didn't come out the way I wanted it to.

I really liked this quarter because I finally got to express myself the way I wanted to. I didn't try to make my art look like everybody else. My art can't look like everybody else because I'm not as good of a artist as them. I needed to become my own person and that's exactly what I did. I think my art shows how artistic I can be. It shows the true me unlike the other quarters where I tried to be like others.

Reflection

This podcast was very easy. It didn't take too much work as long as you knew what you were going to say. I feel as though this was the easiest project we did in this class. I'm proud of the final project and how fast we got done it because we didn't play around. I had trouble pronouncing some of the words. I think that's the only thing I really struggled with. One thing I would do differently is try to find a quieter place. We thought the place where we were was going to be quiet but we was getting interpreted. We still managed to get everything done though.

This quarter in art, I feel as though I didn't do as good as I could had. I feel as though I kind of slacked off but still managed to get most of the things done. However, I will do much better nice quarter because of the weekly check-ins. If I would had put the effort in it this year I would had got everything done.

This quarter we had to create two self portraits, one small and one large. I wasn't able to do either of them, because I'm not capable of drawing faces. I did try to draw them though, but I failed and decided not to use them. The other assignments were: color wheel, texture, 2pt perspective, and shade. As you can see below in the picture below my drawings. I can say that I tried my hardest on all of them, but didn't really accomplish anything.

I know that I'm actually bringing myself down but I'm just telling the truth. Next quarter I'll do much better as I said before. Anyways, here's all my work:

Work can be Hard

Posted by Jamekea Lee in English 2 - Pahomov on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 5:37 pm

In this interview I'll be talking to my grandpop about his job. He worked there for 37 years but recently retired. I'm interviewing about how was it working at a job that long, what type of things he keep across. And since he was working there for so long, what type of people did he come across, so here's our interview.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12879992/My%20Song%202.mp3

Crossing boundaries means that you may upset others because they don't necessarily agree with what you're doing. They feel as though you're doing something that you're not supposed to be doing. They feel as though that you shouldn't be at the level you're at because of your race, the way you look, or the way you act. There always going to be people who feel as though you're stepping into the wrong territory.

While doing this podcast I learned so many things, things that I never even think was important turned out to be very important. I knew that my grandpop working at his job for those many years that he came across some problems even though when he used to come home he wouldn't really complain about it. I also knew that some of the people working at his job had racism because it was only a few blacks working there. While I was interviewing my grand pop I started to feel bad about not wanting to listen to him, like my grandma was the always the one talking about how she grew up and the people she had to deal with. Like if would want for my grandpop to tell me how he feels. So after doing this interview I will start to ask my grandpop about how he feels.

I think what my peers told me really helped because I like taking advice. I think getting advice from others is a really good thing because they pick up on things that you didn't notice. And sometimes it can be bad getting advice from your peers because they might not give you anything at all. I felt like I did really good with getting my interview done but not with the editing. The editing is like the hardest thing for me to do.

This quarter was all about being creative. We had to take 200 photos change 5 of them into photoshop. We had to copy a master, do an internet sculpture, large clear object and a bike. However we couldn't get to the bike drawing but everything else was completed. It has been a fun quarter and doing a lot of things.

One thing I'm very proud of my internet sculpture, I made a house. When not really a house but something that looked like one. It has a little tree inside of it because it was already Christmas time, so why not put a tree inside. This quarter wasn't my best quarter, I sort of fell off getting caught up in other things. Though I still manage to get my work done.

At the end of the day, I'm proud of all my work. Here they are below.

English Benchmark

The Way You Speak is Your Stamp of Who You Are!!

Where can I start? I had so many people say that I talk with an country accent, I’ve been made fun of because I can’t pronounce words right, and I have been corrected to not talk like I’m in the streets. I had to deal with being told how to pronounce words right, and how to say a proper sentence. I used to get so mad when people corrected me. I used to curse them out, stab them, hit them, and even choke them. I used to do anything to get them out of my face. I would do it because they made me feel bad about myself. They hurt me, so in return I had to hurt them. The way you speak can tell people where you grew up and who you grew up with.

I remember when I was in the sixth grade and two girls that were in my class made fun of the way I pronounced street. We were in the classroom in our reading groups, we all had to read a paragraph out loud. As I was reading they began to laugh, I was confused because they were the only ones laughing.

“What’s so funny? Y’all the only ones laufin!” I said.

“Can you reread that sentence?” one of the girls asked.

“…he kicked my ball across the street.” They laughed again. I didn’t know why until they said that I pronounced street wrong. The way I pronounced it sounded like

“he kicked my ball across the shkreet.” To me it sounded like I pronouncing it like “street” but I wasn’t. It made me so furious, I started cursing them out really loud.

“How you gon’ try and judge me when you look like a silverback monkey? Get yo ‘hairy a** away from me. And you get the f**k away from me wit yo no neck havin’ a**. Go ahead wit yo’self, you dikes.” They were judging me because I say some words with a country accent. I’m not from the country or anything, but my family and I go to South Carolina every summer, so the way they speak clings to my tongue. Like when I say “dog”, I don’t say dog but I say,

“Dhog.” to me it sounds as if I’m saying “dog” but to others it sounds like “dhog”. At home my family doesn’t notice it because they speak just like me. And another thing, I don’t get how they their judging me when they speak nearly the same language as me. They didn’t speak “upper English”, but they spoke slang with “good English”.

At the time, it seem that I only had a hard time pronouncing str and scr words, and that I sometimes sound country. I never thought that the language that I spoke and speak would be considered as “ghetto English”. Speaking “ghetto English” can tell the person you’re talking to a lot about you. It can tell where you live, who you live with, what type of school you went too, and even your education level. I never paid any attention to the way I talked because everybody around me talked just like me. I thought I was speaking English, but other people knew I was speaking “ghetto English”. The way I talked didn’t begin to bother me until I came to SLA. It was then when I realized that I wasn’t speaking “normal English”.

In “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” by Glona Anzaldoa, there’s a girl who tells how at home and with her friends she can speak a normal language. A language that they all grew up speaking, but when she’s in school, she must speak another language. “My home tongues are the languages, I speak with my sister, brothers, with friends. From school, he media and job situations, I’ve picked up standard and working class English.” I feel the same way as she does, when I’m at home I don’t have to watch my tongue. I can pronounce things the way I want to pronounce them without being corrected.

Now that I go to SLA I have been getting correct almost everyday on how to say a sentence right.

“ You doing anythin’ Friday?”

“You mean, ‘Are you doing anything this Friday?’” she corrects me.

“You wanna com’ downtown wit me?”

“Do you want to come with me downtown?” she corrects me again. I used to hate when people corrected me. I used to snap and curse people out when they corrected me. However I don’t do that now, I take what they say and practice my pronunciation. Instead of snapping on them, I practice because I know a lot of people judge you on the way you talk.  I stopped snapping because it was only getting me in trouble and I didn’t want to keep getting suspended because it was only making me look bad. I practice everyday and I’m starting to learn how to speak “normal English” even when I’m with my friends from home. I used to code switch but that takes too much work, I rather speak one language and try to change the way they speak. I know it may not sound right, but I know that if they want a good job they must be able to code switch or speak “good English”.

The way you speak is a stamp to tell people where you come from, unless you train yourself to speak better then you can fool people. However if you cannot code switch or change the way you speak, you’re labeled so people know everything about you. I’m learning how to change my language so that people would know everything about me. Some people even think that it tells people your education level, I don’t think so because I’m a smart person with a GPA of 3.73. Even though I have a good GPA, the way I talk doesn’t seem like it.

Monologue

Posted by Jamekea Lee in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 12:58 pm

It’s cool! I don’t trip!

Dest, how could you do this to me? How could you let this happen? I thought you cared about me! You said we were like twins, I guess you really meant it. I should have been Sadie, but No! I was lil’ Dest. When we were young, we did everything together. You told me so many things; you opened up so many doors for my one set mind. You were a sweet little girl. Always smiling, laughing, acting like a kid. I admired everything you did.

Then, you changed. Dressing, talking, and acting differently. You started to tell me that the only way I’m going to get with a cute boy is if I dress like this: tight clothing, low cut shirts, shirts with the belly hanging out, hip jeans, and make-up. All this and we were only in the 5th grade remember running around in Meade schoolyard. You were right though it worked, even though my boys weren’t real cute but they were okay. Then we got even older, 7th graders, we stop talking. I wasn’t good enough for you, so I changed started mocking you and all the other girls. By 8th grade we were cool again, twins. We went everywhere together, did everything together! Started sneaking out of school to go see boys that I didn’t even know! Letting them feel on me even though I didn’t want them to. You did so I did!

That’s when I met him! That boy who sees me on the train but don’t even say hi. After all I gave him, all he gives back is nasty gleams. It doesn’t bother me that much any more. It still hurts me seeing him with girls, he never took the time out to be with me. It wasn’t even two weeks after it happened and he was already seeing somebody else. But it’s cool. I don’t trip.

I’m in high school now. So many people around me are saints. So many people never had that experience. They’ll judge me if I told them. Some people know, but I know they judged me. Just by the look on their faces when I told them. But it’s cool. I don’t trip. LIES! It’s starting to hit me, HARD! (Punches fist) I wish I could go back in time and do it all over. So many things that could of happened because I was a rookie. It didn’t even occur to me then, I had faith in him because you said “He knows what he’s doing.”

I blame you for everything. It’s your fault I’m in this state now. That day plays over and over every time I go there, Allegheny. Every time I see their faces. I’m embarrassed. I was embarrassed then and I’m embarrassed now. I remember sitting on that step 2:00 in the afternoon, I didn’t know who step it was. I didn’t even know the area; I didn’t even know that person. Yet I was waiting for him to come and get me. I was alone, I should have been in school, but I was there. You weren’t a phone call away either, you were gone bye-bye. Sun beaming down on my back, then his voice “Yo”. My smile, his smile, his hand, and his muscles pulling me off that step. The walk across the street, front door squeak open, squeak closed, his dad cooking, stairs squeaking, door closing, plop on the mattress, music videos, and then the black screen.

The moment his hand touch my thigh, my heart started to pound. I could feel my face get heated, it was on fire. My body started to shake, and then his voice “ Don’t be nervous”. He got closer, dead in my face. He reached his hand out and touched my face. At first it was a kiss, next came the tongue. He laid me down and started to kiss my body. I suddenly blacked out from the panic. When I opened my eyes I was naked. How shameful I felt, I wanted to cry. He pulled down his pants, boxers and all. His body touched mines. I wanted it to stop so badly but I didn’t, I let it happen because I wanted to please you. I wanted to be grown up for you, because you told me too.

All the things I did for you! But what did you give me in return? Nothing. Nothing at all! Oops I lied, you gave me shame, and you gave me the reason to walk with my head down. You’re the reason why I’m so easy. You’re the reason why, why, why … I… No, no it can’t be! No, I can’t stop it. I can’t take control of my life. I been brain washed by her. Oh my, I don’t want to believe this but I must. I can say no! It’s my fault because I refuse to say NO! I refused!

My drawings

Screen Shot 2011-11-10 at 2.33.36 PMThis is my picture of the clear drawing before I finished it.
2011-11-01 09.33.24 This is my picture of the clear drawing after I finished it.
I feel pretty proud of what I draw. I feel as though I accomplished a lot, like at first I was telling myself that I couldn't do it but when I started to draw I told myself I could do it. At the end it came out pretty well. The process of drawing this picture was pretty easy because at first you had to draw the outline of the object. It give you a picture of how the object should look. Then you had to put in the lighting it wasn't really hard because you had to focus on where the light hit the glass. You can tell where because the glass would brighten and shine more. The next thing you had to was take away the outline because there was really no outline there. At the end of my drawing it really look like it was 3-d which I think is pretty stellar.

When I started drawing my full figure drawing I had the beautiful image of what it was going to look like. With both of my drawings, I want for them to come out looking great. That wasn’t always possible. With my full figure project it didn’t come out as a thought it would. I had a whole different picture in my mind. I wanted for my picture to be pretty; I wanted for my picture to covered all of the details that I saw. That couldn’t happen because every time I had to start over. At the end I thought it was still pretty good.

Through out the course of me drawing my full figure object, it was hard. I had to start over four times, in all four classes. It was pretty terrible. I wanted to give up; I was going to give up. My teacher and one of my peers encourage me to continue. My peer helped me with my outline, she pointed out things that I haven’t seen before. At the end I thought it was a pretty good turnout. With my clear object it was really easy. I drew what I saw and at the end I went over it and made it even better. It was one the best thing I ever draw.

My work shows that if I but my mind up to it I can do it. If I try hard and say I can do it then it’ll keep happen. As long as I have positive mind then my work will show how good I am. The same thing happens with all my other work. If I put my mind to it I can do it. I have learned how to have a positive relation with all of my work.

Reflection

·       Explain this project in your own words.  (the mission, etc.)

The mission of this project was to talk about what we did over the summer  using past tense.

·       How did you apply the SLA core values to your project?

I think I applied the SLA core values by asking my friends for help, helping them with their project, and asking my teacher for help.

·       What did you learn through completing this project?

I learned how to say what I did last summer. I learned how to tell the reader/ viewer what I did.

·       Think back to your process in completing this project.  Did you have any major break-throughs or a moment where everything started clicking?  Or maybe instead everything fell apart?

At first I thought it was going to be cake. I started lacking but then I realize that it wasn’t as easy as I thought.

·       If you had the opportunity to start your project all over again, how would you do it differently?

I would do a collage which is what I was going to originally do but I ran out of time.

·       Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

I did at first but then after a while it started to annoy me because I started overthinking about it. By the end I liked it again.

"Why I Write"

Posted by Jamekea Lee in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 1:12 pm
I write because it makes me happy.
I write because it's how I express myself.
I write because it's apart of who I am.
I write because it takes me places.

If you was to ask me,
I just gave you my answers.
If your still confused let me say more.

I was stuck on the moon with only a pencil and notebook,
I'll write my way back to earth.
Get it ??

If you don't I'll put it in this prospective,
If I was a artist,
I'll draw my way back to earth.

When I write I get this joy in my spirit,
that tells me everything will be alright.
Don't judge me,
When I say,
"Writing is fun."
We all like different things,
So we can't I like to write.
Don't judge me,
When I say,
"I nearly failed English last year."
Don't judge me,
When I say,
"I can't write a paper."
Just know I write for fun.
Not when it's required.

I hate writing essays,
but I love being creative when I write.
I can't write about a world event,
But I can write about my day.
I can make up people and give them everything.
But I can't write about somebody real and what they have.

Anyways,

I write because it makes me happy.
I write because it's how I express myself.
I write because it's apart of who I am.
I write because it takes me places.
I write because it's inside of me.

My Personal Essay

Posted by Jamekea Lee in English 2 - Pahomov on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 7:58 pm
Jamekea S. Lee

“Get her, get her! No you don’t touch her, you better not touch her!” I was screaming so loud, my ears were ringing. I was getting pushed back in forth. I hate it when I’m standing the middle of a crowd when a fight is going on. Even though most of the time I’m encouraging people to come and look at them because I was screaming loud enough for everybody to hear. Just because I don’t like people fighting will there’s nobody looking. It seems useless.

We were all standing in the schoolyard because it was our lunch. It was warm day I’ll say not hot enough to have sweaters on but not cold enough to have shorts on. The lunch was made up of the 8th, 7th, 6th graders. We all knew what was going to happen because we’ve been talking about it for months.

“You gon to fight her? my friend asked.

“If she gets in my face, yea!” My other friend responded.

“You better not start bitchin’ neither.” Said the first girl.

“Yea you better Waka Flocka Flame her.” I said. And all my friends started laughing. They laughed until tears came streaming down their faces. “Waka Flocka Flame” was the name of a move my “twin” and I made up. It was basically two punches and a body- slam.

That was me in the 8th grade. I used to be rough, I mean I’m still am but not like I was. When my friends from home and me get together we always reminisce about how we were.  That was then, though. This is now.

“You wanna spy on people?” Ayoola asked.

“Yea come on!” I replied. As Ayoola and me ran through the hallways trying to find somebody to spy on, we heard people say ‘ Ya, need to stop. Ya too old to be acting like that’.  We would just laughed about it. If you saw our faces you would have been cracking up. Ayoola had yanked her head back, laughing basically screaming. It sounded so bad. I was the leaned against the chipping painted wall, with one hand on my head, and the other on my leg. I was laughing so hard that you heard me gasp for air.

I have two sides to my personality. When I’m in front of my friends that live other my way, I’m this cold- hearted girl. You could die tomorrow and I’ll be like ‘Oh, I really don’t care.’ When I’m around my friends at this school I’m friendly like if you was to die I would console your family. I know it may seem weird but it’s true. I don’t fully understand why I act like that. I guess I’m still growing inside.

One place where I am friendlier is on facebook. I remember when I posted that I was “playing spy” with Ayoola. My friends from home saw it and was like ‘ WTF you mean you was playing spy. You need to cut that out.’ I knew had forgotten that they could see it.

The biggest factor is that I don’t want to have two sides to my personality. I want all of my friends to accept me for who I am. Which is being sometimes friendly and sometimes to cold- hearted. I mean I’m not always friendly, and I’m not always cold- hearted. I have days that sometimes I feel like being “weird” as people call it. Then I have some days when I feel like being mean. All I really want it is for them to accept me for who I am.

I’ve been trying to show them that I’m half and half. This process is going to be a hard one, but one day I’ll like to be able to who I’m really am. In the future I want people to think I’m cool and friendly but I can also be serious. If the people at this school were to come around my way, they would recognize me. If the people from around my way were to come to my school they won’t recognize me. Basically I’m just saying I don’t want to have to act a certain way for people to recognize me.

Element Print Project 2011

Posted by Jamekea Lee on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 12:30 pm

My element is Nickel. Nickel is used for alloys, steel and jewelry. The reason why I
choose to have  my print the way it is , is because  Nickel comes from the word
Kupfernickel. Which means " Old Nick's Cooper" and Old Nick is devil. So I thought it
would be neat to have devil horns inside of the world since he lives in hell. I added
smoke because it's supposed to represent how hot hell is. And I just had Old Nick on the
top and Ni and it's atomic number underneath it. It didn't start from this one idea, I had
many more but I decided that this one was the best out of them all. I think this was a
really project. I was fun and easy. I learned about negative and positive space. Even
though in the beginning it was really hard but by the end it was really easy. I would try
to be more in deft about my drawing. I would want to change some things like instead of
having the earth just a semicircle it'll actually look like an earth. I would also change just
having devil horns and put he's whole head. Other then that I think it was pretty good.

One-Perspective Drawing

Posted by Jamekea Lee on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 12:26 pm
This project all started from when we first did the boxes in space where we had to draw a horizon line  and a vanishing point. This part was basically to start us thinking about how we was going to draw our room. Doing the boxes was really helpful because it showed us how things above that vanishing point you can not see the top. For things below the vanishing point you can only see the top and not bottom.
Next we drew a miniature room which helped a lot. It was to show us how to make objects such as doors, windows, and furniture look like their coming out the wall. Since we all know that things don't sit on the wall the come out towards you. When I drew my actually picture it was easy to draw because I had a practice run already with the miniature drawing.
I basically used all the information that we learned before and we put it all together to make our room. When you get help piece by piece it helps you a whole lot because their not giving it to you all at once. It gives you the time to process what you learned. Even though it still can be pretty hard drawing things because it might take somebody longer to process it, but over all it's really good help.
The easiest thing for me to learn how to do was the doors, ceiling, windows, and the floor. It was easy to draw them because we had prior practice with it which helps a lot. The hardest was the furniture. It was hard because we didn't spend to much time on drawing furniture, but with the help of Mrs. Hull it made it come out okay.

Alisha Clark
I think her's was good because she can tell that she put a lot of hard work into her project. She even said that she had an outside source to help make hers better. She give good details. She did good with the whole process of the drawing. You can tell she spent her time to help her drawing come out looking good. She didn't rush through it and you can tell because of all the details she give the picture.

Slide 2

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:39 am

In this slide I added a red background. I also changed the picture of me. I made it my bigger. I also used the rules of the third by having my picture in the center of slide. The picture of the jaguar is kind of bigger because I want people to know that I love jaguars a lot. Then I had the gorilla on the other side of my because I love them to but not as much as I love jaguars. I choose the red background because red is my favorite color. Black is my second favorite color so the gorilla represents that. Orange is my third favorite color and the jaguar represents that. I had the words at the bottom big so they stick out.

First Slide

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 10:30 am

I choose to do this slide because I wanted to try and make my slide using all the things I learned from Presentation Zen. I used the rules of the three by having my picture in the middle of the two other pictures. That way people would look at me first then at the other two pictures. I used three bullet points to describe myself. Then I left space because I didn't want to take up to much space.

Posted by Jamekea Lee on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 9:56 am
Okay have you ever bump into somebody walking to the hallway? and you accidentally knocked there books out their hand?

Imagine you doing that to somebody who only speaks spanish. You want to say excuse me but they had no clue about what your saying.

Here are some ways to say Thank you, excuse me and please.

Thank You's

Gracias

Thanks

Muchas gracias

Thanks a lot

Mil gracias

Thank a million

Your welcome

De nada

You’re welcome

Por nada

You’re welcome

No hay de qué

You’re welcome

When you want to say please. You simply just say Por favor . How easy is that?

Excuse Me

Con permiso. (Someone’s in your way)

Excuse me

Disculpe. (Get attention)

Excuse me

Perdón. (When you bump into somebody accidentally)

Excuse me

All of these are good ways to some thing if you want to reply nicely to someone who speaks spanish.

You're walking down the hallway and someone knocks your book out of your hand. You ask someone else to pick it up and then you thank them.

Telling the time

Posted by Jamekea Lee on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 9:54 am
n order for you to time the time or ask the time. You must know how to count up to cien/100.

So I'm going to show you how to count to hundred.

número

uno 1

seis 6

once 11

dieciséis 16

trienta 30

ochenta 80

dos 2

siete 7

doce 12

diecisiete 17

cuartena 40

noventa 90

tres 3

ocho 8

trece 13

dieciocho 18

cincuenta 50

cien 100

cuatro 4

nueve 9

catorce 14

diecinueve 19

sesenta 60

cinco 5

diez 10

quince 15

veinte 20

setenta 70

Now that you know how to count to a hundred.

A thing to remember is when you say veinte, you must replace the last e with a i.

Here's an example: if you want to say 4:25 you simply say Son las cuarto y veinticinco.

When you want to say things like :35 you just put trientacinco. Same thing goes for all everything over veinte.

There's one exception though when you want to say it's 1 o'clock you must say Es la una. Not Son las uno if you say it that way you're pronounocing it wrong.

…y cuarto

:15

…y media

:30

… menos

number of minutes before the hour

In this video one person asks the other person what time it is!
