I am and always have been all about self empowerment. For a very long time I struggled to get myself to a point where I can say I am the best thing I can be. When I finally got that chance it turns out it came after self improvement. I believe self empowerment comes after self improvement. I am not saying change who you are as a person, I am saying that if you want to be the best you make it so that you are the best you always. When I do believe self improvement is something that is on the inside it is also on the outside which is where make overs and such come from. So when asked what my capstone was or what did I contribute to the Science Leadership Community it was something self improving and self empowering. I organized an event for the ladies of SLA could come and get a makeover. I know the ladies felt absolutely beautiful.

Jamie Murphy Capstone

Abstract: I was inspired by the documentary, "Happy". Which is a film about how the main goal in life is to be happy and to find happiness. So I wanted to make my own version of this. I decided to make a photo blog of happy people and what makes them happy. I went around and interview different people and asked what made them happy and how they defined happiness. I've gotten a complete bunch of different answers and I find it all so interesting how unique everyone is. I also really like photography so incorporating all of these elements made the perfect capstone for me.

Dakota Foster's Capstone

​Abstract 

Recently, i participated in Doula Training Class by the suggestion of a colleague. I began taking classes under the Maternity Care Coalition. I was one of three high school girls with the rest of the ladies were either in college or well into their lives with kids. During the classes, I fell in love with everything and anything that came along with being/becoming a Doula. I loved the people that I met in the classes, I loved the atmosphere, and the spirituality that was embedded in everything we did. Two things that stood out to me where that: the teacher told us that Doulas aren't well known and how we are helping them by being 'community doulas' - being more accessible to the community. We watched stories about the women that had Doulas and I thought to myself: something this great, why don't more women know about? That is when I decided to make a video about what Doulas are, the history of Doulas, and something little extra. Hope you enjoy!

Jessica Maiorano Capstone

​I had the opportunity to be on Science Leadership Academy's Students Run Philly Style team all four years of high school. I have grown and learned so much by being on this team. The goal of this project was to find an effective way to encourage students to join  Students Run Philly Style and to give other students their own unique experience while being in the program. I have also used this website to show the qualities and experiences students can gain by being apart of any sports team. I met with one of the leaders from Students Run to exchange ideas on how to produce a final product that would get others to join. This required me to know the benefits of Students Run and how other members have been effected by it. The vision was to create a promotional video that can be shared. I have produced my video by using my skills that I have learned throughout my three years in Digital Video. I choose to put all my information on this website so it easy to see all the experiences that my fellow classmates and I have had while being on a sports team.

Abstract: 
My idea originated a few years back, when I decided that I wanted to write a book about mermaids. I had always liked mythology and fantasy novels. I decided that I wanted to be an author a while ago, but have never completed any kind of book or gone through the process of writing and coming up with the story. Originally, I wanted my capstone to be to write the book. However, I realized fairly soon into the process that I needed to spend more time developing the characters and stories. If I took that time and also tried to finish writing an entire book, I knew the book wouldn't turn out very good because of lack of time to prep the book, and also complete writing it. This gave me the idea to do a "website for the book." On this website, I would have fully developed characters complete with drawings, real history and mythology, a prologue, and photography (that would eventually become part of the book).

Anthony Buchanico's Capstone

It's been around 6 years since I've started playing the guitar. In that tem I finished grade school, went through high school and have matured in so many ways. I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't began playing the guitar I doubt I'd be half the man I am today. Throughout my guitar playing career I had a ton of support from friends and family telling me that I was doing great and that I was very talented. To be honest I never really believed them. When I did though it really helped me to become such a more confident and headstrong individual. I wanted to share that feeling with everybody through my knowledge and interest in music by making a booklet teaching others. I know that a lot of aspiring musicians often get discouraged when they hear a lot of different things about theory and music notation. I aimed to make my capstone simple to understand so that those beginners can get started on the right foot. 

I started off with the basics of music theory, as well as how to tune a guitar and what common terms mean that musicians might here a lot. From there I went on to explain the different types of chords and how to read a tab. From there I talked about what songs to play and what would help people with their music career. I made sure to provide dozens of example songs of all difficulties to make sure anybody can try some songs from the booklet. I know that my booklet won't be able to teach everyone, but hopefully those that it can teach, it does them well.

A big part of teaching guitar is giving a way to read music. Tablature is debatably the easiest way to teach guitar without going too in depth about music theory. Making these tabs can be extremely tedious, but thanks to guitar tab creator the pain of making a tab has been reduced by a great amount. I used this a lot so far in making lessons and plan on using this for the rest of it since it’s such a great tool.

Abe Musselman’s book on teaching guitar was very similar to what I did for mine. I was able to go through his capstone and get a decent understanding of what I can do to make it better. Abe also had a ton of good examples and sources to use. I got the guitar tab creator from this capstone, as well as several terrific song examples that I could implement in my project. It’s also nice to have a source that isn’t a website, especially since I can speak to this person personally.

Having songs in my capstone is very important. They provide a terrific reference of real world application with what you’ve been learning. In terms of acoustic guitar, finger picking is extremely important. A lot of professional acoustic guitarists are very dependant on it. It manages to keep a very fast sound, while at the same time sounding very nice and melodic. I figured that this would be an extremely important thing to put in to the acoustic portion of my capstone since it’s practically required making any progress in playing.

Topic Summary:


My goal for this project was to be able to develop a course curriculum for Advance Chem. I also want to be able to understand the effect that a teacher puts into his or her curriculum. I decided to do Advance Chem. because I really love Chemistry. It’s one of my top courses that I would love to major in once I’m in college. I thought that this would give me insight into what a class structure would look like and what are the big points that a student needs to get out of the course. I didn’t know how hard this would have been because as a student we don’t really think of all the work that goes into making a successful curriculum that every student can understand. I didn’t think it would be easy but I also never thought it would be this hard.


Project Abstract:


The initial inspiration behind this project was that I really wanted to be able to say I did something that no one else has ever done. I wanted to be different one of a kind and that is what I got. I have always loved science and that was my second inspiration. I just never thought that this could be the hardest thing I could do. I had a hard time keeping up with my capstone, a healthy social life and good grades. Sometimes I would over work myself or stay up until late just to write up two or three labs; but all in all I think that this is great I was able to get things done. I also learned that a teacher life isn’t as easy as people may think.

This is a very good source, I really like this source because it has a lot of information and this information is really useful to my capstone. I the reason is very simple, in the book there are different types of work that can be done in class and that is very important to know. Like the “Idea Gas Law” this is one of the topics that I will be going over because for a Advance Chemistry class this something that everyone should know or should learn when taking this class. This source has short description about the topics that are written inside and then it gives you work that you can do and things that you can explain to the students. Also if I could understand what is happening in the book then the student might understand, too.

I selected this source because it has background information that can support one of the many topics that I will be going over in my Capstone. This is just to reinforce what I know and what I can teach others for my capstone.

This resources is a book about advanced chemistry. It’s a manual that helps teachers teach students the principles of advanced chemistry. The book tells of different teaching techniques and the best way to execute them to students. This can be helpful due to the fact that I want students to learn something new. I think that this will help me see what a student know and what they don’t know. Since I’m a student I can tell because if I don’t know it then the other students might not know it.

It shows the necessary basics to start of a class and also what they should know and learn. There is a lot of information you can get out of this website. You click on one of the topics and it shows you “Science and Engineering Practices”, “Disciplinary Core Ideas” and  “Crosscutting Concepts”. Once you clicked one of the topics it takes you to another website that give you useful information.

This is a very useful youtube video. I think that this can be very useful because of that fact. This is a great way that I can compare with. Thus why I have it as a source. This also shows you about what you'll need for the lab. Like every chemical and what we are going to do with it. He also explains what had happen when the acid rain was around minerals and organisms .

I found this source useful because it this one pdf source that I can used. I can also hand it to the students so that they have something that isn’t just google to find a definition for science words that they don’t know or do not remember.

When I reviewed this source I thought that it was reliable and a good source to look at. I was able to find a variety of labs that could work well for my capstone. I thought that it was very informative and had great process guids to do the lab. Though I might need to change some chemicals that they asked to use because we might not have them in school so we have to think of something that is close to being the same chemical. In all this is a very useful source that I plan to be using throughout my capstone.

I feel like this could help a lot because it helped me see that the teachers need a ending goal and also how to treat other students because some are slower than the others and sometime a student won’t ask for help so I would need to know when that is happening and also I have to be aware of the students reaction to the work. Our Vision:

 

As kids, we both had some type of interest in computers and how these magical machines worked. The very machines that lets us surf the web and play our games or watch funny cat videos. As time passed and as we grew up and got jobs, we both decided to make computers. Not from scratch mind you, but make it in the sense that we bought the parts that we wanted and put it together. While it might sound costly, the machines that we built are much better than your average pre-made consumer computers. They are also surprisingly cheaper. One day we had a vision. Why not share with the world our experiences and our knowledge on computer parts? So that’s what we did, and we made a capstone out of it. Our vision is to have a cleverly named website that will teach your everyday average Joe how to build a computer. We envisioned it to have advice, steps and things of that nature. A tutorial website basically. We wanted our potential viewers to appreciate what computers bring to the table, while providing a guide on how to save money while building a powerful rig. So that’s what we did. We didn’t stop there though. We included a brief history on the computer and it’s almost magical advances into modern day technology.

I’ve always enjoyed playing card games ever since I was young and I feel like many people don’t play cards like they used to. Since I’m not very social and talkative, I find when playing cards it allows me to be more social. I find it easier to talk with people when playing cards and I feel this is with other people in SLA as well. I feel were always head first into our computer screens and not truly worrying about the things around us. Yes we do talk to one another but we always have our phones or laptops in front of our faces while doing so. I feel with cards its a face to face interaction with no distractions.

When having a conversation it should be clear eye contact and full attention but with the technology that we have that doesn’t happen as often but I feel like this would change with card club.

Doing research on difficult card games I found bridge to be the most common upcoming which means I would like to learn and teach it in card club. I find that if its tricky then its worth playing and enjoying with other people. This site gives a simple rundown on the rules of bridge and how to play it.

Recently learning this game was a fun moment for me. My grandfather taught me this game and I felt it was a good connection because he learned it when he was in the service and then he began to speak about his history. I feel talks like these will happen during my card club or this is what I’m hoping. It may not be to the extent of lifetime war stories but having conversation about our everyday lives works also.

This site talks about how America has changed over the years due to technology always growing. It talks about how since were acquiring new habits we tend to drop the old ones.

This ted talk is one of the resources block introduced me to. Watching this ted talk was very informative. Sherry Turkle spoke about having balance in your life with such technology. In our society we become so consumed with the electronics around us that we never speak to one another face to face anymore. She didn’t make it as if technology was a bad thing but just that we cannot allow technology to take over for everything.
