Art Q4 V-Z

Posted by Brent Scott on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 12:55 am
This quarter I struggled the most. I thought senioritis hit me last quarter, but this quarter was truly a "struggle" I felt overwhelmed by all the work that was due and being the procrastinating person that I am I made it really hard on myself. I dont believe this is my best work but I do believe I put in 85% effort to say the least. I really wished I could of spent my time more productively.

I’ve always enjoyed playing card games ever since I was young and I feel like many people don’t play cards like they used to. Since I’m not very social and talkative, I find when playing cards it allows me to be more social. I find it easier to talk with people when playing cards and I feel this is with other people in SLA as well. I feel were always head first into our computer screens and not truly worrying about the things around us. Yes we do talk to one another but we always have our phones or laptops in front of our faces while doing so. I feel with cards its a face to face interaction with no distractions.

"A brief history on playing cards." White Knuckle . MSN. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://whiteknucklecards.com/history/originofcards.html>.

This site provides good information on where cards originated. It doesn’t give a specific date because its impossible to know something of that, but they do give a decent theory of how it happened.

Coerver, Stewart. "The Rules to all Your Favorite Card Games." Grandparents.com. Grandparents.com. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.grandparents.com/grandkids/activities-games-and-crafts/card-games>.

This site provides multiple games that I haven’t even heard of that I can teach to the members of card club. This allows not only for my members to learn but for me to learn new games myself that I can teach my family.

Harke, Brian. "Is Social Media Making Us Anti- Social."The Blog. Huff Post, 14 06 2011. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/brian-harke/is-social-media-making-us_1_b_875455.html>.

I feel this in a sense gives a glimpse of what goes on our everyday lives. Majority of people have cell phones, computers or one of those devices. When on this device constantly, personal conversations go in one ear and out the other. Like harke said in the article “The student was not present during the conversation”. When having a conversation it should be clear eye contact and full attention but with the technology that we have that doesn’t happen as often but I feel like this would change with card club.

"How To Play Hearts." Bicycle. Bicycle. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.bicyclecards.com/card-games/rule/hearts>.

This is another game at which i’m adamant on teaching ( and also learning myself) with card club I do not just want to expand my members knowledge on different card games but also mine since I’m still unaware about the many card playing games there are.

This is a game that i’m really adamant about teaching to members. I enjoy playing phase 10 and I believe this is a game that requires a good amount of strategy and trying to trump your opponents from losing cards.

Pavlicek, Richard. "Learn To Play Bridge." rpbridge. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.rpbridge.net/1a00.htm>.

Doing research on difficult card games I found bridge to be the most common upcoming which means I would like to learn and teach it in card club. I find that if its tricky then its worth playing and enjoying with other people. This site gives a simple rundown on the rules of bridge and how to play it.

"Pinochle." Bicycle. Bicycle, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.bicyclecards.com/card-games/rule/pinochle>.

Recently learning this game was a fun moment for me. My grandfather taught me this game and I felt it was a good connection because he learned it when he was in the service and then he began to speak about his history. I feel talks like these will happen during my card club or this is what I’m hoping. It may not be to the extent of lifetime war stories but having conversation about our everyday lives works also.

Putnam, Robert. "Bowling Alone." Bowling Alone. N.p.. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://bowlingalone.com/>.

This site talks about how America has changed over the years due to technology always growing. It talks about how since were acquiring new habits we tend to drop the old ones.

Sherry, Turkle. "Connected or Alone?." TED. Ted Talk, n/a Apr 2012. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.ted.com/talks/sherry_turkle_alone_together.html>.

This ted talk is one of the resources block introduced me to. Watching this ted talk was very informative. Sherry Turkle spoke about having balance in your life with such technology. In our society we become so consumed with the electronics around us that we never speak to one another face to face anymore. She didn’t make it as if technology was a bad thing but just that we cannot allow technology to take over for everything.

This quarter I felt has been the best for me thus far (despite senioritis kicking in) I felt really content when drawing. It really makes a difference when you have your own personal space to do whatever you like to get you into that focus and really put the effort and drive into your art.

This semester of art went into more detail about shading which I found quite difficult. I feel that without proper materials it is very straining to make these pictures looks very surreal or life like. Even though it was a challenge I strived to do the best drawing I could do.

Q1 Art A-F

Posted by Brent Scott on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 12:53 pm
I didn't expect art to be so stressful. I am very critical on my work and feel if it isn't perfect then I need to trash it. I can't express how much paper I've wasted from doing the same pieces over and over, but practice makes perfect. I feel I have progressed somewhat in doing these few pieces and I feel that my craft at having a steady hand has increased drastically. This art semester gave me more experience on drawing and I can not wait to increase my drawing skills even more.

Process Paper Healthcare

Posted by Brent Scott in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 8:54 am

This process was quite challenging. I was happy to find that I received my first choice, however I did not realize how hard that task at hand was. With healthcare as our topic I thought it would be simple enough that we just write a few facts about healthcare, explain why  everyone needs healthcare. When our group came to the conclusion that we needed to have a focus target we were in a bit of a pinch. We felt sure, we can target the healthcare CEO's but we then thought why would these people care remotely about the problem. We can already assume that these people recognize the issue at hand but don't really care. They were taken off our hit list.

We thought about the idea of talking to the american citizen but we figure that they already knew about the situation or are involved so focussing on them wouldn't work. We really struggled with this because we didn't know who was a logical target. We then decided to focus on the bosses of smaller jobs who don't receive benefits. We chose this because we figured these jobs weren't so high up that we couldn't be able to reach them and we felt that even the little jobs deserve benefits also.

Aside from that challenging task another issue was trying to find a decent hook. We wanted something catchy so it wouldn't be a boring campaign just explaining what many people know. We decided to create and QR code and place it on a bandaid then place these bandaids all over philadelphia. These QR codes would take the reader to our website and we encoded a count tool to witness how many people viewed our website. We first thought the QR code wouldn't be as effective because when it comes down to it you don't see many people going out of there day to scan a piece of paper.

I tried to make the website look somewhat attractive so that if people did visit it they would have something to look at but to add the the visual I thought of making a video to promote our campaign..

Teen Motivation

Annotation 1: Lehmann, Christopher, Mr. "Teen Motivation." Personal interview. 13 Feb. 2013.
Mr. Lehmann truly gave me insight on this issue. He’s worked with students for years and has a general idea on what motivates teens not only because he was once a teen but because he speaks with kids on a day to day basis.

Annotation 2: Curwin, Richard L. N.p.: n.p., n.d. ASCD. ASCD, 2010. Web. 19 Feb. 2013.
This article doesn’t only focus on teen motivation but a diverse variety on why teens are the way they are. It gives a lot of options as to what is the cause and what the effect will be. It shows what can be done to help motivate teens and also gives a deep definition of what motivation is.

Annotation 3: Russ, Valerie. "Group Tackles Dropout Crisis." Philly.com. N.p., 18 Feb. 2011. Web. 19 Feb. 2013.

This article doesn't talk about motivation directly but instead talks about why teens drop out. It talks about how most teens aren't determined with the work or have personal problems which make them unmotivated.

Annotation 4:
Duviver, Christine. "Positive Psychology News Daily » How to See More Motivated Teens." Positive Psychology News Daily. N/a, 9 Apr. 2009. Web. 20 Feb. 2013.
This article focuses on not only why teens aren't motivated in schoolwork but more so in daily activities that interest them. They dont care so much for schoolwork but more of a talent that they may have.

Annotation 5: Bushweller, Kevin. "Motivation Matters." Education Week -. N/a, 09 Apr. 2007. Web. 20 Feb. 2013.
This isn't as factual as my previous annotations but I believe this survey is very important due to the opinions in the comments. It shows a general understanding as to why teens aren't motivated.

Humanities Portfolio 2012

Posted by Brent Scott on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 10:04 am

Over this year, I have gained so many new experiences that its truly incredible. I came into this class expecting just an everyday English/ History class with the average, Read this book, discuss, take a test, and move on to the next unit but in this class it was a completely different agenda and curriculum that started off our year was our short story unit. In our short story unit it focused on expression of your self and to show some type of growth. Growth opens you up to new environments for example with our language autobiography project. For the Autobiography project we had to write about a personal experience in your life where you had an issue with language, whether it be coming from a different country, having your parents speak a different language, or even you speaking a different language yourself. In my autobiography (Link is found at the end of the page.) I wrote about how when I was younger and I was very shy in school. I never wanted to speak and hated having the attention focused on me. “My voice didn’t need to be heard I just needed to take the characteristics of a chameleon and blend in.” this is how I came into class the beginning of the year, I didn’t want anyone to pay to much attention to me. With that being said, at this point in time I feel like I’m more outspoken than I was 8 months ago I don’t mind voicing my opinion or presenting my work in front of others because I have become more comfortable with myself.

One thing that has grown while being in Mr. Block’s class is my literature. Not just meaning my vocabulary but the description able to be given in my writing has exceeded an expectation I never thought possible. Expression in literature opens you up to broader new ideas, and a unit I feel that really describes this is the Poetry Wiki (Link is found at the end of the page). For this project my classmates and I took in a deeper analysis on poets and tried to define their work. We also created our own poems and then spoke one out loud in front of the classroom. I already had planned out what poem I was reading aloud until a classmate (Danielle Little) came over to me and read a poem she had written. It was called “the little black boy” I liked it so much I said you have to do one about “the little black girl” and she said if I did it with her she would. I never would have imagined doing collaboration on a poem but anything is possible in Mr. Block’s room. The day we had to present our Poem we went up and preformed it and many people enjoyed it. One of my classmates liked it so much she asked us to perform it at this talent show her church was hosting. This also ties into Growth opens you up to new environments. If this took place in the beginning of the year I would have never given thought of speaking a poem outside of class but in the end of it all I did.

Language Autobiography

Posted by Brent Scott on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 12:46 pm
Introduction/Reflection~ Starting off with this I was totally clueless as to what i wanted to write about. i felt this was pointless but at the end of the day it had to be done. I never really took language into depth. I just made it out as oh you talk this way, but language really can and does impact your life. I wrote on how i was a very shy person and didn't like to talk much. it was more of in certain areas i could speak out when i felt necessary and some places i would remain quiet.

Final

As a young boy I grew up in a home where we had our own type of dialect as with which we communicated amongst each other. In my family we would tend to make smart remarks or comments to one another, but in a harmless, just messing with you type of way. For example I would say “Is today Tuesday?” and my mother would reply with “No Brent its Thursday in a sarcastic voice, that was a casual occurrence in my household, where we could make fun of each other without hurting someones feelings or coming off disrespectful, but in school, it was a totally different story. I was a quiet mouse in a big room of people just waiting for the class to end. I was very shy when I was younger and didn’t like to talk much. Around 3rd grade I felt things were difficult.

Whenever the teacher would ask a question I’d never put my hand up because I was afraid. I would think to myself, what if I know it but the words come out wrong, what if I just have no clue as to what I’d be talking about? I remember were taking a class in math when she handed me the quiz I felt like I didn’t know any of the answers. I wasn’t confident with my work and I felt intimidated that if I got the answers wrong the teacher would be upset with me or would think of me as dumb. After the quiz she would have us go over it in class. she read out the first question “ If john has 18 gumballs and he splits all of them with his 3 friends how many will each friend receive?” she looked across the room as everyone was dead silent.

I tried to not make eye contact thinking that she would possibly not notice me. She said “How about you Brent?” All my classmates simultaneously turned their heads around to look at me. I looked down in despair. “Come on Brent just try it out” I would always get nervous when she asked a question and began to stutter or mumble my words. “Si-si-six I said in a low toned voice. “What was that Brent?” I thought i had the wrong answer because she asked to repeat myself”  My voice got even lower “Si-si-six” she still couldn’t hear me but picked on a classmate. “Six” one of my classmates said. I thought in my head i was right, but i stayed quiet. after she finished going over the test it was time to leave.

As I rapidly packed up my things and put 1 foot out the door. She squalled my name “BRENT” the echoes traveled all throughout the room which made it even louder. I turned around and she said “Come here for a moment please” “Brent you should really start speaking more clearly, your a very smart boy but your so quiet that you make it out as if you don’t know anything” I looked down at my shoes and said “I’m sorry Ms. Nachman” she said “ There’s nothing to be sorry about Brent. You’re very smart you just need to show it” “I want you to take this note home to your mother”. “ I said okay” and went onto lunch. Progressing I arrive home and my mom is already there. She greets me with a warm “Hi Brent” Then gives me this look that pierced right through me. “what’s that on your shirt” “It’s a note about how I’m such an amazing student mom…” “Don’t joke with me Brent… give it here” She snags the note from off my shirt and began to read. “Brent you’re the loudest one in this house so what’s up with this quietness in class?” “I just get nervous in class”. She bursted out laughing and said in a tiny southern accent that an average person would most likely not notice she said “ What duh helll !? You’re pulling my leg right?. “Does it look like I’m pulling your leg?” “Shush brent.. whatever the case may be you need to fix this.” I told her “fine” and went onto my room.

After talking with my mom and going to school the next day I still remained quiet.. I was still nervous to answer. I did happen to become more talkative outside of class with my friends at lunch on the playground etc.. In class I still felt the need to be that quiet little mouse. You could relate my story to tongue-tied in a way. It may not have been that my first language was something totally different than what I was being taught in school but the fact that I was unable to really voice myself due to my insecurities and emotions. I felt I would be judged, criticized, laughed at for being myself. I praised the phrase “Be seen not heard” as if it was a religion all my own. Just being there was good enough, My voice didn’t need to be heard I just needed to take the characteristics of a chameleon and blend in. In a way I had two sides of me that switches depending on where I am and who I’m with. I tend to be shy when I feel intimidated and when I’m comfortable with someone I can act naturally. In a way it’s like my own defense mechanism that I think every human being comes with.

Keystone XL Pipeline Voices

Posted by Brent Scott on Monday, October 3, 2011 at 7:28 pm
In class we recently learned about and were informed about the keystone pipeline project. According to all of the videos we have seen and things we have read about in class there is still a big decision to make based on weather or not the pipeline will actually be built. Disagreements about this are mainly about the health of this environment if the pipeline is built, and the fact that we would be missing out on extra money and having more energy if the pipeline isn’t built. Our assignment was to create monologues based on different peoples opinions. My partner and I choose to base ours on an environmental protectionist, single parent, president Obama, an Exxon worker, and finally a man trying to decide if he wants to move his family. Only one of the people we wrote as was for the Keystone Pipeline and that was the Exxon worker. This project required further thinking and for us to think as someone other then ourselves. When preparing our monologues we made sure we put details and smaller stories into why or why not the people we decided to write as were for or against the Keystone pipeline.

The Decision of a Single Parent

Raising four kids on my own and I can’t get a job. Their father is deadbeat, I can’t afford childcare and the kids are too young to stay home alone. So you want to run a pipeline through my yard. Well I don’t know what to say to that. I understand that if this change goes through more jobs will open up and maybe I could be able to support my family. Then again I hear all the bad things that will come along with this pipeline. What would happen to me? What would happen to my children? What would happen to this environment? I think its wrong for me to be selfish and just think about myself and how I wish to be employed. I believe the construction of a pipeline would be both dangerous and unhealthy for the environment. Better yet why would I do that to my children. Our backyard is the only safe place they have to play. If a pipeline is built through my yard then they have no free space to enjoy themselves and play outside. I did some research on the possible damages and bad things that could come with this pipeline and it has been brought to my attention that the oil isn’t even clean, If the oil isn’t clean we are better off without it. I also realized that we would be spending more money than we will actually be making, For the sake of the environment myself and my children I am against the tar sands act.

Keystone Pipeline Decision

Hello my name is Samuel Wickerson and I am an environmental protectionist. What I’m here to discuss with you today is production of the keystone XL pipeline. There’s no second guessing that I am against this and I feel this could be the big final piece to destruction. If one leak happens it could cause major harm to our environment, our wildlife, and us included. I mean for people who’s houses will be directly under the pipeline. Themselves and their family will be breathing in Co2 admission if a leak occurs and who wants there wife, there kids, the people they care for breathing in things you shouldn’t. My brother is actually working on this project as one of the constructers so I know mostly the full detail of there plan. He constantly tends to say how the technology we have is advanced to the point where it’s highly inaccurate that a leak will occur, sure there may be a low possibility that a leak will happen but there’s still the chance there taking and that 1 chance can affect the earth we live on today. I feel we should just stick to what were doing and get oil from our allies. It’s a lot safer and a lot more reliable.  Sure it will open job for thousands of people but what’s so good about jobs if u don’t have a earth to work on to do this job? I feel that if we don’t start taking better care of this place we live on its going to crumble right beneath our feets and were going to look back and ask what went wrong and my response to that would be The Keystone XL pipeline and many other issues.

My Decision as the President..

As of now my fellow Americans I understand that you feel I have a really big Decision to make. I totally understand your frustrations but I am doing the best I can to decide weather or not the tar sands pipeline will be good or bad for the country. I see you all protesting outside of the White House and just know all of the arrest were totally out of my hand and were not by my order. Back to the matter at hand I have equally listened to both sides of this disagreement about the pipelines. Yes I have looked into it. There are many benefits as well as bad things that would come along with the pipeline. Some Benefits that could come along with this situation are more jobs, better income, if we have better income we could have more schools. To those of you who are already wealthy and have good jobs this may not really mean anything to you or you may feel this wouldn’t affect you any differently. But, we cannot not neglect everyone else. In my eyes each and every one of you matter. I know I cant make everyone happy but I will do what is right. The down falls to this project are mainly environmental issues. Nothings perfect. A pipeline this huge possibly leaking oil would not be a good sight at all. Also this pipeline is planned to be built over our main source of water. That is a problem for both our health as a nation and the environment as well. This topic requires a lot of thinking. Until then God Bless America.

Family Matters

( goes to door and picks up mail. Reads through mail and receives a letter from keystone.” Hello Mr. Turner the letter you have now received is on the keystone XL pipeline. There is a proposal for it to be produced currently and if this is passed the pipeline shall be directly under your home. We are sorry for the inconvience but this pipeline shall not affect your daily life. If the proposal does go through we do appreciate your cooperation. Sincerely, Keystone )

I’m so confused about the decision of wether I should move me and my family to safety, or to stay here and put up with this pipelineI’ve lived in this god forsaken home for over 20 years and am raising my 8 yr old son and 11 yr old daughter here and I feel that moving them isn’t the best option but the safety of my wife and my children is what matters at this moment and having my kids coming  from school my wife coming from work breathing in Co2 admission every single day… I refuse to have my family suffer because of some idiotic oil. How do you think you can just put a pipeline right under my home. I am outraged by this proposal but at the same time I feel that there isn’t much I can do as one person so maybe the best is to just move..

Who wouldn’t take this offer !

Hello my name is Tom Jones and i am the president of Exxon. I am here to speak on the discussion of the keystone XL pipeline. I am for this pipeline due to the fact that it would be beneficial to the U.S. One good reason is this Pipeline will provide thousands of jobs for the people out of work. Also the U.S. needs oil and we cant always rely on our on Allies for oil because of the fact that if there was some type of conflict between the two of us they could stop transferring oil over to us and then we would basically be “screwed”  I admit i do see the downside to this, yes there is a possibility of a leak from the pipe and that can release Co2 admission into the air but the chances of a like are fairly  UNLIKELY due to the fact that by the technology we have today the chances are fairly low. Also this will open up thousands of jobs for the unemployed. And lots of people need jobs in the economy we live in today so this is highly beneficial. This also gives  us the ability of being independent when it comes to getting oil. We don’t have to constantly rely on allies to supply us with oil. I feel that not taking this oil is an idiotic move on our part because if we don’t snatch it up someone else will and then we’ll be the ones still having to get it from allies and who knows when that might cease. I feel lets take this opportunity while we still can the U.S can make money from this and God knows we need the money so Take it while its good!

Descriptive Essay- Fish

Posted by Brent Scott in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 1:35 pm

Fish

It was a Saturday morning the sun shining bright and vibrantly. i got up early excited for the day that was about to come i put on this plain t.shirt with these jumpers and boots that i got from this bait and tackle shop. around 10 or so my Grandpop began to get ready he asked if i was ready to fish but he could obviously tell by the huge grin on my face that i was more than ready. we hopped in the car and as we were on the road the sky became a dull gray color. The smell of rain aroused my senses. The sound of thunder made me jump out of my seat. This day seemed to be getting worse by the seconds.

Once we arrived to our destination the day came out for the better the sun decided to show its bright exuberant face once again. We opened up the trunk and got out these new shiny and polished fishing poles ready to be casted into the not so clear jagged lake. We got out slimy disgusting bait out the back also waiting to be eating by the deadly catches we planned to get. We took our stand in the cold chilling lake and casted our fishing lines. We waited and waited and waited. I could see this fish passing by my feet and yet none were taking bite to my line..he redness in my face could show my expression.  I began to get bored with the whole waiting idea so i wanted to try to catch with my bare hands. I asked my Grandpop if he had some gloves in his car and he responded with a curious tone in his voice saying yeah. i went to the car got them out and plopped into the water. Grabbing fish was a lot harder than expected at first site. After lunging my hand into the chilling water I caught a fish. The slipperyness of it made it a bit harder to get grip of as it wringled and wrangled out of my hands. After wrestling with this fish for about 1 minute it got away a plopped in the water splashing me as if to say you cant catch me.

After a few hours of failure I go to the car and moped the whole way home. The dead silence in the car made the ride even more depressing. Once we got home my mom was in the living room Waiting for our arrival her anxiety got the best of her so she opened the big burgundy red door opened for us. She asked where my fi- and then hesitated as she saw the look on my face. That look of failure that look of disappointment.  As I looked behind her I saw it.. a saw the amazing plack. The smoky, tanish-brown oakwood look it had to it. As I go to touch to rugged rough plack it looked so nice but the best part was right below in the center from where the fish was supposed to be placed had this writing in gold that says “Brent and Paul’s. I felt better as it started to glisten as the sun hits it. My mom asked “why such the surprised look on my face?” I responded with “ even though I didn’t catch a fish this plack makes it all the worth while to go try again” Even though throughout that day it was on and off it took patience. Anxiety got the best of me and is most likely
Why I didn’t catch my fish but sobbing over it didn’t make anything better so that plack was a good motivational thing for me and is why I am willing to try again.

How To Say The Month and Dates

Posted by Brent Scott on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 10:19 am
Asking the date in español
Here is the spanish way to say the months.

Jan.- enero
Feb.- febrero
March-marzo
Apr. abril
May-mayo
June-junio
July-julio
Aug.-agosto
Sept-septiembre
Oct-octubre
Nov-noviembre
Dec-deciembre

Remember in Spanish, the months are always lowercase.

Remember, in Spanish, for the dates you write the day first, then the month, and then the year. It is always the day first instead of the month, so don't get confused.
ex: 10/26/10 would be in Spanish: 26/10/10
