Cynthia To Capstone

For my capstone, I have realized this year a bunch of high school students including myself have been really stressed with the transition of a shorter school year, the college process, benchmarks/projects, work, SAT/ACT, and etc. I wanted to find a better way for us to relieve that stress and what is not a better way than Playful therapy. A playful therapy allows people who are stress to express their thoughts without having to speak while they are having fun. The goal of my capstone was finding the best ways for teens to distress and understanding why we stress.

For my process, I have interviewed people who were really stress to people who don’t even stress that often to see what they do to cool down the stress level and if that really worked. After that, I started to research for the best of the best ways teens can maintain their stress level and why teens stress so often. From the research, I have made my events: making slime day to yoga to walking outside and lastly to playing games with your friends. I was really surprise that the students who came to the events enjoyed it and said that it have helped them a lot and they will do this more often. Since the events have helped my clients, I wanted to also make a website for anyone can go to distress while having fun.

Podcast 2: Giggling and Gabbing- Literacy Lenses

Olivia: Concepcion, Theresa. "Supporting #MeToo shouldn't mean dismissing Junot Diaz's rape trauma." The Washington Post, The Washington Post, 25 May, 2018, https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2018/05/25/supporting-metoo-shouldnt-mean-dismissing-junot-diazs-rape-trauma/?utm_term=.d19cb3b2f339 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

This article was about how Junot Diaz was raped as a child and accused of sexual misconduct by several women later in life, and that his trauma may have affected his life. She doesn't claim that it excuses his actions, however. This had me thinking about how his view on women, which may be skewed, evidenced by his actions, may have been manifested in the female characters in his book. He writes a lot about sex from the women's perspective in the book and how this has negatively affected their lives. He may avoid writing about how it affects Oscar because it could remind him of his childhood.

Eric: Vitzthum, Virginia. “Junot Díaz's Pro-Woman Agenda.” ELLE, ELLE, 9 Oct. 2017, www.elle.com/culture/books/reviews/a14353/junot-diaz-interview/.

In an interview with Junot Diaz, Elle magazine asks Diaz about his book, "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" Diaz talks about how he wanted to relate his ideas of feminism and masculinity into the book and how they affect the relationships that Oscar has. In the interview, Diaz explains firstly how Oscar was written to not have emotions in a way or at least he doesn't try to show these emotions to other characters too often because men are asked not to be vulnerable. He states that men are expected to cheat in a lot of relationships and this has become a societal norm. Diaz describes that he always tries to incorporate some sort of concern in his book about racism, genocide and in Oscar Wao's case: sexism. Diaz is an activist and leans more towards the left side of the political spectrum. "If you have a book that represents a bunch of sexist, rapist lunatics and they all end up being awesome and wonderful and winning everything and the book is clearly affectionate to them, then this might be problematic. On the other hand, if a book has some pretty average guys, and their way of thinking about the world, about women, and their habits around intimacy and relationships don't produce positive results for them or for the women in their lives, that that is not problematic." This quote demonstrates Diaz outlook on not only modern-day literature but on how he believes that male characters need to have some growth with their sexuality or sexual behavior in order to show their growth as a character. This article helps shed light on how Diaz views sexism and relationships after writing Oscar Wao.

Cynthia: Lee, Sarah. “Junot Diaz: a life in books.” The Guardian, Date Published Fri 31 Aug 2012, https://www.theguardian.com/books/2012/aug/31/life-in-books-junot-diaz

In this article, the writer talks about how all of the books that Junot Diaz have published relates to his life living in the Dominican Republic and in the States. This has provided insight into both the novel and the feminist lens by Junot Diaz had been rape when he was eight. This relates to why he writes about how women are sexually assaulted in his novel. This allows him to reflected himself in that situation and also give closure to himself. Each of the characters relates to Diaz in a certain way, especially Yunior with appearance and experiences. This is a quote that Junot Diaz mentions in an interview is "I'm of African descent and my sister looks completely black, but I didn't look black. I was the super-nerdy kid who was also willing to fight. I love comics and SF but am hopeless with technology. I am still better with a pick or shovel, even with my bad back, than I am with computers."

In Giggling and Gabbing's second podcast, we discuss chapters 3, 4, and 5 of "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz. This week in our book club, we had a really thoughtful conversation about the feminist lens between all the women that were mentioned. We decided that women are the losers no matter what they look like and the men are the winner because of their power. We decided this because the narrator mentions how the women have no say, but to follow the men. Hope you giggle while we gab about Oscar Wao. Link to the podcast below

Reconstruction of Memory// Growing Up- Cynthia To

Posted by Cynthia To in College English · Pahomov/Rhymer · B Band on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 12:20 am

Our old house was small but it always fit us. Our living room was the main hub that everyone frequented and it was the main room before we entered and left.  As a family of four in a small South Philly row home, we were always together for the good and the bad. The good, playing house under the desk that my big sister rarely studied at. The okay, getting chased up the stairs and down the hallway when I broke one of my sister’s paper robot collections. And the bad, which were usually from my sister to my parents - now that I think of it. I remember specifically the first bad time I had in the house and it wasn’t because of me. I was young enough to understand but not old enough to fully understand.

This time, the TV was on but no one was watching. The TV volume was muted but it sounded like there was a fight scene happening. The voices were loud but familiar. Looking up, I saw my sister arms bent at her side and in an angry SuperWoman stance and my parents standing over her. They were fuming. I stood behind them, staring at my sister yelling back at my parents. She was nine and we never did that as kids. We don’t talk back to our parents like we need to enforce nine year old made rules. But I guess Ellen didn’t learn that yet. My parents said “well if you don’t like the rules, you can get out!” What?! Get out? I remember standing there, crying without even noticing at first. This girl is my only sister - how can they just tell her to get out? I felt the tears and the heavy breathing kick in and everything was muffled as the snot filled my nose and ears. I couldn’t make of the last thing they were yelling about but the next thing I knew was Ellen was getting picked up and I dropped our taling toy dragon.

As he hit the ground, he said “I love boisenberries,” but that didn’t stop them! That would have stopped me! My dad put her outside and watched her through the screen, door half cracked to isolate her. I remember crying even harder. They just threw away my sister! My only best friend. What was I going to do? I didn’t have the power to let her back in, right?  I paced around scared and started packing some food, clothes, and shoes. She was barefoot on the door mat! That’s not allowed. After packing, my five year old body pushed the door back to let her in. My parents were shocked. They're faces were focused on what I would do next so I let her in. I was a big girl making big moves for my big sister.

After she stayed outside of the house for a few minutes, I opened the door to let her in. We both started crying and hugging each other. We cherished every moment from there on. That was really a traumatic experience for a little kid to experience even though they were not the one in trouble but got to see. To this day, my parents have never done that again. When I look back, I see that this teaching moment brought us together.

Author's Note: I decided to write about this memory because this was one of the memories that stood out to me because sometimes punishment can help make a better bond. Even though what my parents did for a punishment was harsh, it allowed me to see something good out of it, that people shouldn’t take things as for granted and actually cherished the moment they have with one another. Growing up, I always liked hearing old stories about my family’s past and being able to learn from their struggles and experiences, which is why I had the aunt tell the stories to her niece. In my writing, I was inspired by Margret Atwoods' writing style when she makes Offred questions herself and describes the little details that happen. For the Visual Companion, I chose this video because correlate how Asian family punish their children with tough love.

Advanced Essay #3: War Shapes Identity

Posted by Cynthia To in English 3 · Block · A Band on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 11:42 pm
Cynthia To
Mr. Block
English 3
07 March 2018

Wars are inevitable and unavoidable. They happen when two sides disagree with each other and the conflict turns into something larger than the opposing parties. Many people have left their homes because their countries are being attacked by another country or due to the lack of support and resources. People are forced to deal with these struggles because their government were too unstable to protect them. War can change one’s perspective on their views of themselves and where they belong in the country.
From my parents’ experiences of growing up after the Vietnam War, they talked about the Vietnamese government and how it lacked financial supply for its nation, the little to no opportunities to succeed and become prosperous, and how not many in the country had the chance to have stable jobs, good education, and healthcare. Vietnam didn’t have enough money to rebuild the country and often times even the more popular parts of the county were dirty and run down.
Coming to the United States, those factors that chased my family away weren’t the case in the States. From my dad’s interview, he said that “Vietnam was really tiring because there was no money for anyone. People were too cheap to buy and spend. Everything was about making a quick buck with people who didn’t want to lose a buck. Your grandpa worked as a tailor and had to come home to take care of his wife and seven kids. Our family didn’t have enough money so we had to save a lot money for all of us to come to America.”
After interviewing my parents, this made me wonder what would my life be like if my parents didn’t decided to come to America. I would be living a much harder life and I wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the things that I do here in America. My parents’ identities have changed so much when they left Vietnam to come to America. They started going to school and working to support their families. My parents faced a really hard life when they came to America. In society, many people who have money leave their country to have a better life. They leave their country to start over and become what they dream to be for a long time.
This situation not only happens to my parents but in the 17th century. Before there that time with the British and the colonists, the colonist thought they were British Citizens so they should also have the same civil rights as the British. The British did not think that the colonist was with one them. This result factored in with the British adding a bunch of laws and acts which was unbearable and unfair for the colonists upset the colonists.
At this point, the colonists got tired of the British ruling them. In the source Inspiction, they said, “the American colonists were actually some of the wealthiest people in the world, so much so that the poor ‘starving masses’ so prevalent in Europe were not present in the American social structure of a predominantly middle class.”  In society, people fight or change for what they believe in like how the colonists and British fought resulting in equal rights in a war. With the British adding a bunch of unless laws so the colonists, it allowed the colonists to become free from the British and make their own rules. The war allowed the colonist to make equal so there wouldn’t be really any nobility.
In a war, those who participate usually have more money are well off. They do not have to worry about the healthcare, but the lower class does. Social classes have a big impact on the war.  War can leave many whom are dying or not having enough money to support their families. In the source, Lumen, they said, “the upper class, likely have better access to healthcare, marry people of higher social status, attend more prestigious schools.” The source mentions that high-class people had better healthcare, wealth, and education. In society, people that are in lower class have to work really hard to protect and take care of their family. Many lower-class have a lot of health conditions because of their lack of money. When there are wars, taxes increases which affect the poor negatively. Lower classes have it really difficult when it comes to surviving during the war.
Going back to my families’ relation with war, Vietnam is an example of a country that did not get totally destroyed by war. In fact, it is more modern, clean, and offer those who seek them, more jobs and better education. People never choose to live in a country that goes war but will try to escape their own struggles and their country struggles. From all of this, it is evident that war can shape identities.

Advanced Essay #2- Chinlishese

Posted by Cynthia To in English 3 · Block · A Band on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 9:37 pm
Introduction:

The goal of my paper is to present to others that it is okay to speak in broken English or any other language. The part that I am really proud of are the quotes that I picked from Mother Tongue while comparing my situation to society. The area that I need to improve on is is making my writing flow better with different types of transitions.

Essay:

For my whole life, I grew up having to translate for my parents because of their lack of knowledge in the English language. At the same time, it was also hard for me having to learn new words through descriptions using words that I currently knew. I felt that I was always describing something that was so easy and could be one word, if I only knew that word. My parents didn’t finish their homeland’s education before coming to America and when coming to America, they had to leave what little English and ESOL school they had to take care of their families. For myself, I’ve noticed English is very different from Asian languages, especially with the pronunciation of the words and tenses. Languages have multiple interpretations, meanings, and ways to pronounce them - it’s the skill of maneuvering through each pronunciation and proper grammar.

Cantonese, a dialect in Chinese, was my first and main language until I learned English in preschool. At home, my family and I speak Vietnamese and two different dialects of Chinese, Cantonese and Fujianese. At school, I only speak English because that is the only language that everyone understands and this made me lose my Chinese and Vietnamese. Which is why in Elementary School, I spent more time learning to speak Fujianese and Vietnamese because I knew they were languages that I wanted to keep alive. Even though my parents didn’t go to school, they would do everything they could to help us in school. Buying English and Chinese speaking dictionaries to help us with our reading and vocabulary words. Buying math books and working on the problems together. My parents wanted my sister and I to focus on our education that they didn’t get.

In the story “Mother Tongue,” Amy Tan describes her experiences with speaking improper English, “Like others, I have described it to people as 'broken’ or ‘fractured’ English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than ‘broken,’ as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness.” (2)   Thinking about this quote and relating it to my life, I understand that the way my parents and I speak is not damaged. With the ability to speak multiple languages at once, my family and I have own language together, “Chinlishese,” which is Chinese mixed with English and Vietnamese. I’ve learned that no one can speak a language correctly, there are always something more to learn and improve on.

Throughout my whole life, I would always mix up the two Chinese languages together because I only knew some words in Cantonese and other words in Fujianese, but they still understood me. I would accidentally mix-up the two languages without even knowing. It didn’t matter how I said it because my parents would still know what I meant.

This mixed language did not roll over with my extended family. My aunt, for example, had a harder time understanding the mix. When she needed someone to go with her to the doctors to help translate for her, I was always there. When the doctors kept asking me questions, I’d have to interpret to my aunt in Cantonese. While I was interpreting, I forgot that my aunt couldn’t understand Fujianese. She kept making fun of me and saying in Cantonese “this is why the young generation are useless because you guys can’t speak properly” and “who teaches you Cantonese.”

This made my self-esteem low. After that, I was cautious in what I was interpreting. I realize that my parents and I have our own unique language. I had to learn how to differentiate between the two dialects. People like my aunt assume that all the younger generation kids are not able to speak any language except English. This is not true. This makes me wonder why can’t people accept their own language. Thinking of what my aunt said, it allowed me think that the language my parents and I speak is our own unique language.

Another quote in the story “Mother Tongue,”  Amy Tan mentions her mom experience’s when they go out anywhere, “the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.” (2)  In society today, people who can’t speak proper English or any language, do not get the full attention they deserve, like people who do. Everyone in the world speaks their own type or version of languages.

At Geno Steaks, customers who can’t speak proper English, the employers would not take any orders from that customer, which is not fair to the immigrants, who want to try the famous cheesesteak in Philly. This shows that some people in society are shallow to those who are different. People who can’t speak proper should still deserve the same respect because it is not their fault that the language you want them to speak isn’t their first language and only language.

In our society, it is important to not be divided because it is important to be united and help others especially those with disabilities or language barriers. It is very important to make sure that everyone has a voice. It is hard to learn a new language and speak it properly and there is not just one way to speak any language, but a multiple ways too. This is something that should be carried with us when meeting people from all walks of life.

Advanced Essay #1: Say Cheese

Posted by Cynthia To in English 3 · Block · A Band on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 12:09 am

Introduction: The goal of my essay was for me to write about what I remember and reflect on my family and capturing the perfect moment. I wrote about how I hated that my parents took a bunch of pictures and now I appreciate the pictures they took. The area that I am most proud of is my last paragraph because I sum up everything with my reflection about taking the perfect photo. The area that I need improvement on is the connecting more scenes to my essay.

I had never looked forward to trips when I was younger. That all changed when my annual family trip was planned, and this year it was Mexico. This happened because the stars aligned and Drexel’s summer break lined up with my summer break. The morning of the trip, my brain was scattered everywhere trying to make sure we had everything together for the adventure we had waiting for us. While I am packing the suitcase, my sister Ellen was packing all of the cameras and equipment -  Polaroid, a tripod, and a DSLR. Going on a vacation with my family, you have to make sure you bring enough Polaroid refills. We almost used a pack in one day! Ten films would not work for this family, it wouldn't even last a day.

By the time we finished packing, it was 6:30 in the morning and our flight with American Airlines was at 10 am. As time went by, my stress level had gone down and my excitement had risen up. I couldn't wait to start the journey that I knew that I would have. We finally got to the airport, through TSA, and onto the plane. As soon as I sat down, I fell asleep and woke up in beautiful Mexico.

On the second day of the trip, my mom didn’t really want to go into the beautiful clear water of the Gulf of Mexico. Instead, she took so many of the same pictures and videos non- stop until the very last day of the trip. Which at the time, I thought it was pointless because she was just taking a lot of the same pictures. Once my parents learned how to take pictures or videos on their own, they stopped us when they saw something breath taking or beautiful, just to take one picture. Soon enough, we had to limit their pictures to  just enjoy our trip without being stopped every second. I told my mom no more pictures for now and to enjoy our time here because we don't see this is Philly. I knew that my parent’s just wanted something to remember these moments. On the other hand, I like to live in the moment and take pictures with my memory instead.

During our third to last day in Isla Mujeres, my dad and I decided that both of us would go to the Selvatica Adventure Park, while my sister and my mom went to an outdoor museum. It took two fine fours to get to the place of adventure. When we finally got there, the photographer took numerous pictures of us holding two colorful birds before we started on our activity. The instructors took us really high up in the jungle. It looked similar to a jungle gym for grown-ups. Once the instructors hooked me into a harness, my heart started to racing unusually fast. My dad and I both waited for our turn together. I was on the right and my dad was on the left. The instructors told us to lay on something, similar to a bed, so he could hook us up to the wires. I shed tears of fear just at the thought of falling from 100 feet down to the jungle in mid-air. I was not ready and I wanted to back out, but my dad said it was too late to back out. My biggest fear was doing the Superman zip line, which is where we were in our stomach and the table from under us would drop. Afterward, it felt like I was flying and turned out to be the best thing I did in the whole trip. Sadly, the photographers took some embarrassing pictures of us. The photographers were moving the cameras around to get the perfect shoots. They end up taking about 125 pictures of my dad and I - so that number did not compare to the amount that my mom and dad took.

The next day, as a whole family, we wanted to go see the outdoor art sculptures. Before we got there, we took many stops here and there. My parents couldn’t get enough of the perfect view and took fifteen pictures of my sister and I at each stop, and my sister doing the same for my parents. We also had to ask strangers to take pictures for us as a family. I feel uncomfortable having to pose for a really long time. We finally get there and my mom wants us to take more pictures with most of all the art sculptures. She mom kept moving her phone around, spamming the camera button on her smartphone. Meanwhile, I just wanted to look around and take pictures here and there of the beautiful art. My parents never understood how taking a lot of pictures and staying in one spot is not my thing.

“No more pictures! This is the last picture,” I exhaustedly said.

“Take a picture, this is going to be the last picture,” said my mom.

Throughout this whole trip, it was all about taking pictures and making new memories with my family. It felt like the pictures were going on a never-ending loop. With my family, we can never just take one photo. There will always be someone looking the opposite direction of the camera. At the end of the day, there is always one perfect picture with all of us looking. And even though I didn't like taking so many pictures, I just appreciated that I can go to these places with my family.

Q4 Artworks Benchmark- Cynthia To

Posted by Cynthia To in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 11:17 am

For the fourth quarter, I did 7 different artworks. My favorite artwork that I did was Week 3. I think my art skills have improved a lot from the beginning of the school year. For the first artwork, I did photo editing which was really fun to do. It was really cool getting to crop out the background and add colors to the image to change it up. For the second artwork, I made figure drawings. This was really hard sketch a person from a picture and doing the correct estimates. For the third artwork, I made line drawing which was surprisingly really fun to do. For the fourth artwork, I made a digital drawing that was fun getting to change different shapes and sizes. For the fifth artwork, I made an illusion of spacing drawing. This was similar to what we did for freshmen year art. For the sixth artwork, I made an practicing texture drawing. For this piece, I was really easy because I wanted to sketch without erasing a lot and drawing for it for the first time. For the last artwork of the year, I made elements of art drawing. This is where I added all of my art skills this year into one piece.

Q3 Artworks Benchmark- Cynthia To

For the Third Quarter, I made five different types of artworks. From all of the artworks, we did for this quarter, I really like the last one the most, the mandala. I feel like that I have improved a lot on my art skills from the first semester. The first artwork that I made was the bike drawing. This artwork was really difficult because we had to draw a bike from memory. I wanted to make the bike different colors for the different objects on the bike. The second artwork that I made two optical illusions. This was really fun do make. One of the optical illusions looks like a room. I picked out two colors that stood out together. The third artwork that I made shading form. I really cool shading in shapes. I think my sphere looks more realistic than the rest of the shapes. The fourth artwork that I made was an eye drawing. This drawing was really hard to draw and shading in to make it realistic. The fifth artwork that I did was a mandala. I decided to make a pineapple because I wanted people who are looking at this piece to think of happiness and paradise. I chose warm colors for this.

Respect the Disrespected- LOTF- Cynthia To

Posted by Cynthia To in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 1:04 pm

Why do people treat different  people unfairly? This usually happens because of miscommunications, misunderstandings, or just plain jealousy because of the different classes, race, and faith of others. In such a social society, being “normal” is the norm for our society and being special is deterring. Special needs people aren’t always treated with the same respect as people considered “normal” are. Special needs people are often looked down upon. In the book the Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, none of the other boys  would listen to Piggy when he had the almighty conch in his hand. This behavior shows that symbols are not as powerful as our society wants them to be. This is because the power ultimately lies with the individual and the social status of that individual and not the object itself.

In the chapter,5  , Beast from Water, Ralph set up a meeting about the beast and no one could talk unless they were holding the conch. That was their way for one person to talk at a time, but it didn't really work. When it came time for Piggy to have the conch in his hands, no one wanted to listen to what he had to say even though he had information. The boys treated Piggy like he was different, just because he had specs, ass-mar, and he was a bit heavier than most of the other boys on the island.“‘Sit down!’ ‘Shut up!’ ‘Take the conch!’ ‘Sod you!’ ‘Shut up!’ Ralph shouted. ‘Hear him! He’s got the conch!’” (89) The meaning of the conch is for one person to talk at a time and to show leadership and power. At the time, Ralph was on Piggy’s side and tried to enforce the rule no matter who the hand the conch in their possession. That rule worked until Piggy had the conch and then no one listened. This shows that people would rather listen to the patient with the normal appearance instead of the person with the special needs or different appearance. This shows that people that are similar to Piggy are not being appreciated but ignored.

The book is not the only time that example has happened. This social stigma has also happened in reality. In a middle school in Cleveland, Ohio, Shaker Middle School made it on the news for the wrong reasons. The broadcasting talked about a little kid with special needs was walking out of school and was targeted because he was different from the other kids. This just shows that no matter what scenario it is, different isn’t always. The people who are different are usually treated poorly through abuse and punishment like how in the book the Lord of the flies. Piggy was an outcast that had a lot of problems and no one would listen to him and would only push him around.

In our society today, people try and use symbol to indicate power. This shows that in order to get power, a symbol is needed to represent it and drive the meaning of power home towards others. Throughout history, symbol and power have been hand in hand with each other. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, stood up for people during the Civil Rights Movement. He didn’t use any physical symbols but his speeches that he wrote were emotional and vocal symbols. His speeches gave the Black communities. He gave them hope that things were going to be better. Martin Luther King Jr. never used violence or abuse to make people to believe him. He made people feel safe and comfortable. He was a great leader and very peaceful. When comparing Martin Luther King Jr. to the LotF leader, Jack, it is evident that they were two different types of leaders. Jack was similar to a dictator and used fear and cruelty to gain power.

Another example from the book showed that power ultimately lied with the individual, not the object itself. At the end of the book, the boys have no other hope in getting off of the island so they started to hunt one another and went against people, slowly killing the people that did not obey the leader. This happened until the officer came to rescue the boys from the island.

During the rescue, the boys reflected on what happened on the island and what they did was wrong. When approached by the officer, “Ralph shook his head. The officer looked past him to the group of painted boys. ‘Who’s boss here?’ ‘I am,’ said Ralph loudly.” (201) After everything that happened on the island, the boys left still wanting to gain the power that everyone so ruthlessly fought for. This shows that the kids to want to have power, even though they could be able to go back home and that they already lost two innocent lives, Simon and Piggy.

While Ralph was answering the officer’s question, he didn’t use the conch to speak. This signified the loss of the need for a symbol and power. Ralph was just glad to have this be over and that everything that happened started to sink in along with the guilt. Ralph had a greed of power and wanted to answer the questions about the island. He could not really answer to them because the only person who know the answers to the questions was Piggy, who was killed by Roger. Jack started to cry while the answering the question, “ He gave himself up to them now for the first time on island; great, shuddering spasms of grief that seemed to wrench his whole body.” (202) Jack and the other boys finally understood what they did to Simon and Piggy was wrong and there's nothing they can do to fix it. This made Ralph forget about having his power back and made him focus on how he lost true and wise friend, Piggy.

Overall, the  Lord of the Flies demonstrated that power and greed cannot be represented by a symbol but by the popularity status and normalcy of a person. In the end, readers saw that symbols mean nothing without the leader. In the book, the boys only realized that after two deaths and a rescue.

E2U4- Cynthia To

Q2 Artist's Statement and Slideshow

Posted by Cynthia To in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 5:00 pm

For the Second Quarter, I have made 6 different types of artworks. They were the blind contour drawings, add color to the contour line drawings, choosing your own painting, recreate a piece of art, illustration from a piece of writing, and photo editing. For the first assignment, I decided to draw the cartoon characters that I saw on the ceiling and the objects that were next to me. It was really hard to draw the characters and making it precise without looking at the character. For the second assignment, it was really easy to color the drawings I did for the first week without thinking. For the third assignment, I decided I wanted to make a Dreamcatcher. I use blue and purple because it is a cool tone color and that it is catching all of the bad energy. For the fourth assignment, I wanted to draw my favorite South Korean singer, so I recreated a drawing of him from Google. For the fifth assignment, I decided to Illustrate the song from Moana. I wanted to make the character scared of finding her own path. I use color pencils to add texture and color. For the last assignment, it was really funs getting to edit the photos and learning how to use the app. I got to edit the photo I took from San Fransico and the photo of me and my friend, Ashley.

The Struggles of Being Rich- Cynthia To

Posted by Cynthia To in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 1:44 am

Why do I need someone to set me up with a blind date when I am fine being alone? Do I have to be in a relationship to take over the company? I am about to turn 27 and I don’t need people to tell me when I should get married. I should get to decide when I should get marry and who I want to get marry with.

(PAUSE)

I know it would be really great for the company and my family if I get married but I’m not ready for the big commitment and marrying someone that I don’t love. “This will help out the company by increasing the percentage rate and being known. This helps my family with the income inequality and to keep our class status too,” they say but I want to get marry but I am not really.

(Pause)

I can still take over the company even though I don’t want to get married right now. I helped the company increase by 0.2 percent. People in the company love working with me because I’m a hard worker and I get things done. Taking over the company takes a lot of hard work that I am willing to do. How does being married now affect me from taking over the family company?

(Pause)

All of my friends already taking over their family company and already married to the girls they love or their parents took them to get married to. Some of my friends aren’t happy with their wife’s and there’s nothing that they can do about it. People that are rich have a hard life finding love as it is already. They are forced to get married to the person that they dislike to help keep their class status and increase the income percentage. Sometimes when I hang out with my friends or with my coworkers, I always imagine what it’s like being married but not how my parents want me to get married. The girl that they want me to get married is Jimin. Her father is a chairman of a really successful company and her parents are also close to my parents because they use to go to Highschool together.

(PAUSE)

For my whole life, I only thought Jimin as a really close friend and nothing more than that. She’s three years younger than me. That’s weird!! Why would I date someone that is three years younger than me? She liked me since we were little. Everyone is telling me that, “It doesn’t matter about our age but the thing that matters is true love.” Why can’t I just live my life taking over the company and find my true love? Probably I don’t give her a chance is because I’m being forced and just think of her as a friend. I wish people will understand me and my feeling.

(Pause)

I should probably give Jimin a try and not be so harsh on her. I will probably love her later on and get to take over the company and make my family happy. She still loves me even though all I have been doing is be mean and crude to her. That has to mean something, right? I hope. In order to take over the company, I need to marry Jimin. It won’t be so bad since we are close friends, right? I want to make it right for my parents and for the company as well. I guess age doesn’t matter when you grow older and have money. I don’t know what the next step of my life is and I don’t know… can I really handle this commitment?

Q1 Final Project - Cynthia To

Posted by Cynthia To in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 5:37 pm
For the first quarter, I have done three art piece. They were the ceiling tile, the fall wall hanging, and lastly my self-portrait. For the ceiling tile, I decide to do something similar to my sister's tile, The Muppets. I did the character, Walter. I chose to make the background green because it looks like the character Walter is behind a green screen. For the fall wall hanging, I had an idea that I should make a banner that said, "fall is here" and decorate the background like fall. Also, I wanted to make my drawing to that fall is happy. For the self-portrait, it was hard to draw myself at first and on a big piece of paper. It was really a big challenge to draw all my artworks by hand and my eye skill.

The TV show I watched class was Digital's Nation. What was this show about? This show was about what Teenage do on the internet and how much they use the internet and how that effect their learning. The most memorable thing to me about this video was that in MIT students multi-tasks do work and how that effect their learning and that in South Korea kids are on the computers 24/7 and not talking to their family. Also, that when you are on the internet 24/7 can cause death and a trip to the doctors. It is important to watch shows like these because so we can learn not to do the same mistake and do right on the internet. If my future safe online I would tell them bad things about the internet that they shouldn't do.  It is important to talk with my family about internet safety because they don't have to do that same mistake. The advice I would give to my parents that don't know their children safe online about the long and short term and the bad things about that they shouldn't do.

Media Fluency#2, To

I learned a lot from the critiques of my media slide. I made the changes that I made to my slide because my slide was not viewer friendly because I made the pictures all even and boring and that I changed my words because they didn't standout and the changes will make my slide better. I learned that I should change my words and make it into a collage. I used contrast colors like blue and orange because the colors stand out more. I made all the pictures different sizes. I also added two different fonts for my name and what I like to do because they are different.

I made the slide the way it is because I operated what I like to do, so far in my life. I chose to use interpeting because my parents doesn't know that much English. So this lead a big role for my sister and I being an interpreter. Also, I chosed running because my sister inspired me to run and I love it ever since. Then, I chose biking because mostly every Saturday my cousins and I and sometimes my sister would go biking around the city. I did this most of my life so far. I also chose a picture of me spending time with my family on Christmas Day. This is one of my favorite holiday and the family spend time all together and have fun. The last picture I chose my sister and I doing art and crafts because ever since I was little i like to make random things and call it art. Also, it's fun when you have a partner to do art and crafts with. Then, I added a red heart to show how I love do all of these and it shows how much I love my family. I typed my name big and in orange because it can stand out more and it sum up what my slide is all about. Also, I typed what to do in the same color so you what is what. Lastly, I picked the background light blue because I like how is calm and I wanted to add a little color to the slide.

1.The video  we watched in class was “I am witness” Bullying video. The classroom activity today was to tell a grown up if this was ever to happen to you and that you should never do this to someone else. http://iwitnessbullying.org/

3. I am this random girl on google and I only have a picture of me on google. I appear as this girl from Housewives of Atlanta.

4. I think people perceive me maybe our names are kinda similar or face or race.

Home Network, To

Posted by Cynthia To in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y1 on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 12:20 am
1) My local area network is Comcast and the internet connects to the modem with the coax cable. Then, the modem is connected to the router with a ethernet cord. Lastly, the router connects to all my devices at my house are 4 wireless phones, 1 wire home phone, 2  wireless laptop, 1 wired computer, and 1 wireless printer with wiFi.
2) I learned about how the information were sent through packets to get to us. Also,  I learned that there were different wires like coax and also that Verizon provider has a 2 in1 modem/router, other internet providers has two of them separately.
3) I would tell other people that they need to know about having an home network is which wires connect to what and the process on how our computers receive information and also about the internet providers.
