I created a mini-course at Science Leadership Academy Middle School (SLAMS). Although I couldn’t do my exact idea, I used the space that I had. I wanted the kids to be as safe and happy as possible.

My original idea was to create a lacrosse sports clinic. It was supposed to teach kids how to play the sport but because of the limited space, it would have been difficult to play. I was given a small room similar to the size of a storage closet. So instead of teaching the sport, we talked about how to stay “fit”. Staying fit means a lot of things. We did stretches, exercises, and learned how to eat right.

Over the 8-week long program, we alternated between legs and arms every week. When we worked on legs, we played games like The Fox vs The Squirrel, it’s similar to tag but there’s a fox that is trying to get the squirrel, and The Great Wind Blows, a mixture of musical chairs and show-and-tell. It keeps their legs moving. For arms, we played a lot of hand games. I taught them how to play Numbers and have competitions on which group can go the longest. Along with that after the mini-workout, I gave the kids a snack as a healthy reward. Some snacks we shared were fruit and trail mix.

SLAMS would usually have a performance for their last day of mini-courses, but it was canceled because not all of the classes were ready. Instead, we passed around a basketball outside. This was a really amazing experience for me because I have a trail an error in trying to get the kids attention. I have to learn about what they liked in order for them to enjoy their mini-course. In the end, I felt like most of the kids enjoy these activities as well as learning about their bodies and health.

Advanced Essay #3: Identity Takes its Own Role

Posted by Autumn Lor in English 3 · Block · A Band on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 8:02 pm

Introduction: The goal of the essay was to show how drugs can affect identity in two ways: to a person as themself and a person to society. Peer pressure can be make a person fall and take the wrong path to life but it's about "fitting into society". On the other hand, there are some ways that drugs makes a person feel safe and letting them fit into their our body.

Identity Takes its Own Role

Growing up, the brain starts to develop differently, what a person thinks and how they react. Most people can develop skills that will help them in the long term, but what difference does that make? According to National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens, it says that more than 46,000 teens (8th to 12th graders) have done drugs in 2012. Most people, by the age of 25, have jobs and families to worry about. Others could be living in their parent’s basement; there are so many reasons as to why. Kids, as young as 13 or even younger, are walking around with weed in their bag, looking for a good time or just to loosen up. Marijuana is illegal in the United States, so individuals, for that matter do not want to get caught. Some kids do it because of peer pressure and others for pleasure. High does not always mean messing around just for fun, it’s about not wanting to feel a certain way, in other words, to help individuals grief the pain and sorrow they are going through. When a person is sad and wants to hurt themselves, they do it to feel relax and it helps them lose track of what they were planning to do.

Each drugs has its own purpose. Some makes people happy, forgetful, more thoughtful, and feel like they are in a whole new dimension. The idea of belonging does not always have to be included with a group. Sometimes it’s about fitting into their own body and feeling comfortable. A line that stood out in a story called Medicine stated “You let it beat you down, deciding you deserved it. Deserved it for not doing more for your guardian. Deserving it for letting adrien down. Deserved it for just breathing,” (Woozy). When the story first starts, Woozy was just starting to go under peer pressure but soon, started to do it for himself. This was when his life started to change and lead to a new path. He kept doing it to the point where the skills that he learned is not just simply getting high, but as a guardian and a helper to help his brain see a better point of view.

Often times, people say that high school is the time to “identify themselves.” Students has a subconscious choice of picking two paths in high school: staying focused and interacting with other students, or doing things like skipping school and inputting unknown substance into their body. Every choice has an ongoing effect. Doing one thing leads to 10 other things. With that one event it will change your identity as a person.

When a person first starts to do drugs, the person’s mind has full control. Over time, the scale of who has controls, shifts. Drugs starts to have more control; the body system grows stronger and takes over causing the brain to lose function. An online journal called The Untold Side of Me, said “I haven’t smoked weed in almost 2 weeks now, it’s weirded when you start smoking and that just cause you to have insomnia. There’s a door that has a bright hallway that is extremely far yet so close” (Daniel). Daniel is going through withdrawal and looking at the affects, his brain is telling himself that he can’t do anything. This little path has changed his whole identity. It’s not pushing himself to the fullest potential.

Despite all the bad, there are good things that come in with drugs. An anonymous teen posted a memory about how it help him. “I was really curious to see what it was all about. I had a few hits, but didn't really get stoned. Later, I smoked some more until it got to the point I didn't even know what’s going on. The next chance I got to get high, I jumped on it. The more I did it, the more I liked it. I loved the way pot played with my head,” (Anonymous Teen). People who doesn’t smoke often, use drugs as an escape. Being able to get away from life and feelings are great ways to relax the brain. It also allows a person to speak their own mind without others giving them boundaries. Identity is about fitting in to your own skin, but people believe that they should try to fit in with society or group of individuals. Identity is more about the self and being selfless. Identity is when you are able to look in the mirror and accept you for who you are. Individuals are able to form different type of personality, however, they just need to accept them for who they are in reality.

Advanced Essay #2- Autumn Lor

Posted by Autumn Lor in English 3 · Block · A Band on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 3:00 pm
My essay revolves around phones and why I hate and love my phone. I'm biased about phones because of the experience but the story is identifying what a phone can do, off and on screen.

Blinding by a Screen
Learning about the world, you have to look at things multiple times to understand everything. I wish I could look at things once and just understand it all completely. Every day something new is created and every time us, humans feel the need to learn about it. We look at a device called phones as if we should a book. We create statues on social media as if we’re writing an article for the world to see and read. Jean M. Twenge wrote an article about how smartphones destroying this generation. She mentions, “The shift is stunning: 12th-graders in 2015 were going out less often than eighth-graders did as recently as 2009.” Surprisingly enough, when people do go out, they’re still on their phone.
In 2013, I got my first phone where I could only call people. In 2014, I was able to text and in 2015, I got my first iPhone. It allowed me to talk, text, use wifi and so much more. Taking pictures to capture the moment and playing digital games to pass the time. I have a love/hate relationship with phones. There is one main reason why…
Why is everyone walking so slow? I turn around and I see phones. They’re looking at their selfies and don’t know where they’re walking. “I don’t understand why you guys have to do this right now,” I say out loud, but no one hears me because no one is listening. I look straight forward again. There are two people standing in the parking lane, wearing big green coats with fur on their hood; they’re wearing matching coats while being on their phone. They both just look at the phone as I see the car that’s in front of them turn on his lights as if he was backing up. In that moment I screamed, “The car is backing up, get out!” Not one person moved. I watched the car back up and hit the guy as he pushes his friend. But the girls and I just kept walking as I watched and they were looking at their phones. I turn around, “Did none of you guys see that?” No response, “Hello, did you hear me? None of you saw that? Those people who just got hit by a car! How did you guys not see that? Did you guys even hear me scream?” They looked at and still didn’t know what I was talking about.
Kara finials answer back, “See what? Those people aren’t my problem, they can get hit again and I’ll it watch this time,” Kara shouts.
“What do you mean?” Selena asks while still looking at her phone. She sounds concerned but the way she looked, it didn’t seem to add up.
“What great friends you are. Always paying attention to me and actually caring for me. Don’t worry about those people because if that was you, I’ll just walk away and not say anything. I will watch you get hit by a car nothing will happen.” I rolled my eyes and just walked away. After taking some time away, I thought about the quote Lisa D. Delpit that says, “If you try to suggest that that’s not quite the way it is, they get defensive then you get defensive” (Delpit, 281). People get really defensive when they believe they are 100% correct. By defensive, I mean pushy and rude. They will say anything to make themselves right. I tried my best to see if they could change their minds but all I got in return was their attitude.
We’re walking to the train station at 42nd and Market street but I walked faster than them so I got to the train first. When I got to the station, I didn’t look back so I didn’t know if they got on the same train as me but I know they didn’t get on the same cart as me. While being on the train I didn’t want to think about what happened, so I took out my phone and started to play a game called Bricks. By the time I looked up my score was 2098, my highest score, and I was two stops before I had to get off. The Market-Frankford Line takes so long that I never look up.
After getting off the train I jumped on the bus. “Phone is low battery, 10%” my phone screen popped up. I put my phone in my pocket and slept. Half sleeping and half thinking, Why was it so hard for her to listen and look around? Maybe it’s because of the person she is, but I do that sometimes, I might not do anything but I would have thought about it. Knowing what happened means something can change if there is a next time.
A few hours passed, Selena texts me, “Are you fine?”
I responded with “fine,” but what I wanted to say was fine with what? I just hate the fact that I think too much about everything. It’s either that or people don’t think enough. I don’t know what to think anymore. I hate it so I exited the iMessage app and went on Instagram.
Instagram makes me forget everything, being able to watch videos that are a minute long and watch another where my mind will completely switch. Instagram changes my thoughts in four seconds. Lisa D. Delpit brings out the point about “bitterness and resentment expressed by educators” (Delpit, 289). Although while she wrote it she meant something else but just reading that part, I see it as my educator being a distracting for me getting away from my bitterness and resentment. Instagram is my educator that reminds of my bitterness.
While others may not feel the same way as I do towards the phone, I find phones more on the bad side of life. I could live without a phone. A phone is just one little device that provides ten thousand things together. I can call, text, locate yourself and others, capture pictures, record videos, and so much more. But phones are a distraction and it doesn’t allow people to connect with people face to face. Instead of talking to a person, you’re talking to a screen. Right now, you’re reading this off some type of electric device and my question for you is: are your eyes hurting yet?

Advanced Essay #1: Traffic Light

Posted by Autumn Lor in English 3 · Block · A Band on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 2:54 pm

Introduction

My paper is about how everything around me is different from what I want and need. You’ll find out that the more people that come into my life makes it harder for me to just be free of life. Throughout the story, there are parts where you should ask yourself and compare how life is different for each person. Some people may think that my story isn’t relatable at all, others believe they could be living the same life. I want to thank Amelia because she helped me include greats ideas to make the story more powerful and compare it to other things. If I had the chance to rewrite this essay, I should have made the story build up more to show the purpose of the whole story.

Traffic Light

I’ve always thought about kids. Constantly questioning myself if I want kids or  to push them aside for as long as possible. When I was eight years old, my cousin Aedan was born. At this age, I had to learn to take care of him while still taking care of myself along the way. Changing diapers, making milk/food to feed him, putting him to sleep and so much more. As a child, I would watch kids on T.V. being given fake babies to learn how to care for them but I was given a real live baby. There wasn’t plenty time or a moment to fail, only success. As I got older, there came a point where more babies came into my life. It was more difficult each time because that also meant more responsibilities coming along with each one. I was given these babies without any help and I was glad they weren’t mine because I didn’t have to watch them day and night.

At that age I couldn't help but think that children are only used for play. Now I can't help but think, what if I’d have to experience it on my own?

The rush of anger comes when I hear babies cry, they can't tell you what they want, so how exactly would you know? A bottle would appear in their mouth in two seconds but will then disappear in one. After holding them for so long, my arms start to shrivel and so I put the baby down ever so gently so they could sleep without waking up again.

To have some time to myself and relax, there are days where, I wake up at six in the morning to take a nice long, warm, steamy shower. By long, I mean ten minutes. After I put on my uniform, I would get my brothers, Evan and Aaron, dressed. Along with that I would fight with them to brush their teeth, pick up their dirty laundry, and check everyone’s homework before I have to leave. Time is 8:15 and I’m still struggling to finish all these things.

As the day goes on, I stop thinking about my brothers and go on with my life. School is fun because I’m without them but my peers know me as the mom. The mom who gives reminders about where they need to be, what they need to do, and how to do things. When they call me mom it’s hard to think will I always be like this and is that a good thing; am I a good person?

Walking home alone from school, I see parents picking up their kids from the school yard. All of a sudden, I remembered I was supposed to do something after school, but I was already half way home. It takes six minutes to walk from my house to their school but school was dismissed twenty minutes ago, so I, of course had to rush. I put both of my book bags straps on and began to run. Every time I got to a light it was always green, as if the light knew I was in a rush, until the last one. It felt like the longest red light I had ever crossed. By the time the light turned green, the people from my initial start was next to me. Rushing up the hill into the elementary school, up the stairs, then down the hall to pick one of them up. Immediately after, going back out the school, down the hill into the middle school to pick up Evan.

After running from these places, I couldn’t feel my feet but I could catch my breath. As I was walking home with Evan and Aaron I thought about what my place in life is. When is it my time to show who I am? It terrifying to think about myself and put myself first when there are other people who are more important. I can’t put myself first when there are other things that need to be taken care of. School comes first but I’m too busy thinking about doing the laundry for everyone in the house. Family comes first but I’m trying to get myself together. Just thinking about what’s wrong with me, a tear fell down my face and onto the pavement right in front of me. One tear drop turns into rain. I start to push the boys to run fast so we could get home.

When I got home I thought to myself, who am I to everyone? No one at my house supported me, people wouldn't care if I went away. If I went away I wouldn’t know where to go. If I left, who would take care of the kids. I can’t focus on me without thinking about the kids and teaching them to do things on their own so I can leave and be free. It difficult to think that they are the reason I can’t leave. They rely on me so much that they’re now too lazy to do things themselves and restrains myself from doing other things. When will it be my time to live my life as a kid and be fun because life is short and soon I have to think about how to live by myself, with work, and paying bills. When that time comes will there be anyone to help me then?

Changing It Up- LoTF Essay- Autumn Lor

Posted by Autumn Lor in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 11:51 am

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, a  group of boys became wild and aggressive when being left alone without adult supervision. Would being alone create a person to go insane? Personalities changes the heart of the human because of the heart and the brain are connected to each other and makes new choices. William Golding tries to make the characters go against each other, where they end up killing each other. People can see their “correct” actions as a good idea but can be an act of darkness. Their behavior shows that humans cannot have a set personality and can change based on those around them.

There are two teams on the island and each team represents hunters and those who wants to go home. The people on the island has to pick a team of who they want to be and what best suits their personality. In the beginning of the story, most went to Ralph’s side, who wanted to find a way home, but there is fear present were all the children changed sides to Jack, the hunters. They were not forced physically but mentally threaten where the children thought Jack was the better team. Two boys named Sam and Eric traded sides but still showed affection towards their former leader. “Memory of their new and shameful loyalty came to them. Eric was silent but Sam tried to do his duty. You got to go, Ralph. You go away now” (187). What this shows is how people will go against their side to help those that are not on their team. They understand that it’s not right to help the wanted opponent, but they knew that helping was better than killing them. Darkness can be a dangerous place but will have a better outcome for at least on side of the party.

Looking out into the real world, people have conducted experiments that were similar to the plot line in the Lord of the Flies, where they have two teams. Philip Zimbardo created an experiment called the Stanford Prison Experiment, having two teams; prisoners and officers. The experiment was created to show how fast people would react to living their new lifestyles. Explorable.com explained, “Social and ideological factor also determined how both groups behaved, with individuals acting in a way that they thought was required rather than using their own judgment.” The purpose of this was how people expect to look one way, but doesn’t turn out being the same due the the change in enrollment. The moral values start to be forgotten, but there are a few people who made it out with the same personality just with a different mind set. Being in the a new environment, it can cause people come to desperate times. Although they didn’t make the correct decisions, it helped them in that point in time.

As the darkness is rising to the surface of the skin, there are ways to bring it down and only shine like the sun. In the middle of the novel, Simon went out of his way to find the thing that everyone feared. People hid from the bad and let the fear roam. Some could say it’s okay to run from fear but better to stand up. Simon came into this new environment scared, yet he was the only one to find the power to go find their unknown fear. “‘You shut up, young Simon! Why couldn’t you say there wasn’t a beast?’..’I been in bed so much i done some thinking… He can’t hurt you; but if you stand out of the way he’s hurt the next thing,” (93). Simon used to be a very shy boy, but the fear has changed him, not becoming into a careless person but to someone could help. The upsetting part is the group disagreeing to go alone with his plan. People around them can affect the final outcome of the choice as a whole group. Their choice of not following Simon’s idea lead them to killing one of their best men.

Killing your own men can lead to vulnerability. Risking a life instead of staying together with more power creates more possibilities of things going wrong. Amy Novotney from American Psychological Association wrote an article about avoiding malpractice and vulnerable. Method #4 is about covering up the vulnerability that is there. She states, “There are many things that can go wrong very quickly with these patients, leaving psychologists who work with them more vulnerable to board complaints and malpractice claims.” The thought of a doctor saying this can be difficult because of several reasons, knowing that things can go wrong at any giving time. Nothing can ever be for sure. These type of experiences can change people. One day, a person could enjoy him or herself. The next, that same person could completely hate being themselves.

Things change, nothing stays the same for as long as it lives or exists. The same is true for humans. People change as they experience new things or learn new things. People reaction when they realize that they might be wrong and need to change their ways. Personality is affected by this new experience and information. Humans, then, do not have a set personality and can change their ways based on events and people.

E2 U4 Autumn, Fireworks to Life, Mural

Posted by Autumn Lor in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · A Band on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 8:16 am

Macbeth Playbill (Autumn and Amelia)

Posted by Autumn Lor in English 1 - Giknis - A on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 4:36 pm

My partner is Amelia Benamara and we choose to do the theoretical playbill because we felt that it would be a little bit harder than the other ones. Because we thought that it had more steps, due to getting the bios of all the characters, in this case we only got a few. We also got a few costumes for the main characters and we had trouble picking out a theater because when we picked out the theater, we had to look for some of the background information for it. We also took the time to look at different playbills (examples) to compare ours to an actual playbill. Something that was really difficult was getting the correct dimensions of the playbill. It was easy to get the size online but it was hard to figure out how to get those dimensions and create it while using Google Docs. While having it on Google Docs was a little bit hard, then I realized that if you took a piece of paper and folded it in half, it will create the perfect size for playbill. So what I did was create tables throughout the whole document then made the color of the table white to make it transparent to the paper. I only left the line down the middle to separate the two sides and show where the paper would fold. As we were doing this project, we kind of went out of order. We did most of it as we planned but we took some days off to do other projects, just to keep everything balanced out. We had so many things going on at once. However the calendar and list we previously made helped a lot with the organizations and keeping the whole project smooth.

The first thing we did was split up as soon as we started (after reading the details of what we need). Amelia worked on getting people’s names for the cast and created questions for their bio. While she did that I create a format for the project and after sending out the email together, then typed up the bios into paragraph form. Amelia drew most of the art work and I got some of the customs online. And we talked at least three times a week about the projects. Mainly about if we got all the pictures, Amelia was able to get everyone’s picture for their bio while I put the pictures in and made a new format. In the end we edited each other work a little bit show show the difference and express our true thoughts.

Working with each other was very easy because of the great communication we had going with one another. We would always remember to work on the document on certain days and would use the time we get in class very wisely. Also, we worked pretty well on time management, as you can tell by the pictures on google hangout and our well organized calendar is. We, as a team, respected each other’s choices and would always find a way to mix our ideas together as one. Amelia thought we did a pretty good job together on dividing the work up, equally. Everything was fair to both of us throughout the entire playbill creation. Overall, we think we made a pretty good team and had fun at the same time. So, we’re glad this project was enjoyable, instead of stressful. We are proud of the outcome!

These are some pictures of us working on our project in different classes during a work period.

Here is the final project of the playbill. The first page is an ad for posters. The last page is blank because we couldn't get rid of it, we spent almost 40 mins trying to delete it.
Click the first picture down below to reveal the advertisement for the playbill. There might be some problems with seeing the other pages, so click the next picture to see the PDF of the actually playbill.

  • What TV show did you watch in class?

Frontline: Growing up Online

  1. What was this show about?

This show is about how student today who are online and change their lives. How the students are different from their parents.

  1. What is the most memorable thing to you about this show?

The ONE main thing that I remember is when a kid killed himself by following directions from a website.

  1. Why/Why not -  is it important to watch shows like these?

I feel like this show should be watched because this is not just happening in america but all around a world. But some people don't know that these things are happening to other people. This is to show people like us that other people have problems while being online or have a happier life.

  1. How will you keep your future family safe online?

The best way I think to keep my family safe online is by sharing to your family about what’s going on, so they can help you.

  1. Why is it important to talk with your family about internet safety

It’s important because you want to always know that no one is ever going to hurt you.

  1. What advice would you give to parents that don't know how to keep their children safe online?

I would advice to be aware of what their child are doing online but don’t be overprotective and make them give you their password

Media Fluency Part 2- Lor, Autumn

Pictures that covers the whole slide, makes it less eye catching. When it’s a big picture, it takes away the main focus. On my slide itself, I felt like it was a bad picture to put as a slide shows. So instead of making it a plain picture, I changed to texture of it.

I changed the color of the fonts and I also changed the positioning of the word “photography”. I kind of had made it follow along the line at the top of the building and then moved the words “me magazine” to a different area. The last thing I did was taking out my name.

Media Fluency- Lor, Autumn

I made my slide this way because I wanted it to be plain yet colorful. The words have the same font but I shifted the words around. So in one corners,  I put the title of the magazine and in the opposite corner I put the subtitle. I also made “Me Magazine” smaller than “PHOTOGRAPHY” because it more important, it also makes it eye-catching. I tried to make the words somewhat same the the colors in the picture. The picture itself is contrasted. In the picture there is a word that say “VISIBLE” but I made the picture transparent showing the opposites, making the photo a bit pale.

Who am I Online Reflection, Lor

Posted by Autumn Lor in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 12:25 pm

The video was inspiring, it show people can really get hurt from online and offline bullying. The video was about a boy who was getting bullied and people didn’t help him but there was a bottom that you could click when something is getting worst. The bottom was an emoji that shows “I am a witness”.

It reminds me of the feeling people will get when they are being bullied. I makes me think about, “Am I a witness? Could I have done something?”

I appear to be a 8 year old girl who like to post videos on Youtube and sings a lot.

Based on what came up, I think people would see me as a young girl who seem to have lots of fashion ideas and likes to go out with friends.

The goal of an internet troll is they try to annoy people. For example, some will also correct people or spam others just for fun. They lie and tell stories to hurt other people.

The positive thing of being anonymity, you can do something that you would never usually do, like posting a poem, and no one will know it was you. The negative it kind of the same as the positive results because you can bully to other peers online. Although most people think because they’re anonymous that they will never be found out about, that is not completely true. the founders/creators/owners are the ones who controls who you are.

My Home Network, Lor

Posted by Autumn Lor in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 1:17 pm
1. I have a router/modem from Comcast. The things that are connected are my router are iphones- mine’s, my mother’s, brothers’, father’s and sometime sisters’.  I also have a printer, fax machine, home phone, and different tablets. We have 4 tablets- one ipad and 3 Kindle. Other things that we sometime use are Xbox, laptops, and television. These things are connected to my router wirelessly.

2. While doing this project I found one interesting thing, it’s about the wires. For example`, I didn’t know that there were so many wires and I didn’t know where to put them or where they go. I found it interesting because each router has a different wire to make it work.

3. If I could tell people about their ISP, I would probably tell them the different wire that they use and where it will go. I would tell them like how some things you’ll need a wire if the modem is not wireless
