Mickey Lieberman-Burak Capstone

Posted by Michaela Lieberman-Burak in Capstone · Latimer · Wed on Sunday, May 31, 2020 at 7:50 pm

For my Capstone, I created an online Queer-Straight Alliance (QSA) at Science Leadership Academy, in addition to preparation for the QSA next year. My Capstone began with an inquiry question: How can school communities better support LGBTQ+ students? This question developed over time into another question: In what ways is technology instrumental in overcoming obstacles to connect a community? This Capstone has taken a winding path, with many twists, turns, relocations, and adjustments. The first of many obstacles this year was the asbestos crisis. While the relocation was jarring and unexpected, the online adaptation of school sparked a new vision of what the SLA QSA could be. I created an online SLA QSA, via Discord, a social media platform. Once school returned to being in a physical location, it was a time of adjustment, during which I had to rework many of the plans. From designing posters for the in-school meetings to doing the necessary write-ups for the online SLA QSA to be approved by a lawyer of the Philadelphia School District, I learned and experienced the steps required to overcome the obstacles that come with connecting a community in a time of turmoil. Each time the date and location of the first meeting were determined, there was another relocation. In the end, the online SLA QSA withstood the obstacles that the in-school meetings couldn’t. The final result was an online QSA, as well as a variety of materials that can be used next year, by the future QSA leaders.

For my capstone I was originally going to create a club during school hours for whoever was interested in learning some hiking and camping skills. I was planning on designing flyers to hang up around the school to advertise my club. When the virus hit I had to adjust to the circumstances. I sent out zoom invites to those who had shown interest in the club before school closed. Not everyone was able to log in everytime but I was also able to reach out to people outside my school. In the span of two weeks I was able to host 4 meetings with my friends that were available at the time set. I learned that it is extremely important to be well organized and always have a plan before presenting. Before each meeting I would write down some questions I thought would be asked and answer them so that I was more prepared. I had a lot of fun with these few meetings and being able to teach my peers about something that I am passionate about was amazing. I hope to put these new skills to the test with my club and go on a hiking trip once it is possible.

Originally my capstone project was about making prom dresses, but due to the circumstance I was unable to gather the materials needed to finish. I decided to change my focus on eyelash extensions due to its popularity gain in the beauty industry. I've never done eyelash extensions before, so I decided to start from scratch. I learned independently by watching the process on youtube. I followed a professional lash trainer's tips for eyelash extensions and got familiar with the techniques used. Since I have relatives in the beauty business I was fortunate to have all the materials needed to get me started. After becoming familiar with the process, my mom allowed me to practice on her. Through this experience I learned what motivates me in the beauty business, and I learned to have more patience. The entire process took 2-3 hours per session. If I had more time and without this circumstance I would have interviewed different people in the beauty industry to give their take on how a small change like eyelash extensions can transform someone's confidence. The main goal of this capstone was to find my passion in beauty and take this with me to my future career. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sqvuS9QetFAZx1Pyp2mNR-veBifmQbKwKJX8FEdls88/edit https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sqvuS9QetFAZx1Pyp2mNR-veBifmQbKwKJX8FEdls88/edit

I picked this topic after having to change my first topic because of covid-19. i picked the three religions or spiritual practices that i found the most interesting and tried to stray away from typical ones. https://sites.google.com/view/isayascapstone/home

Laila Kerbag's Capstone

Originally. my project was a wall scrapbook of SLA filled with things from SLA students. Due to the pandemic, I was left unclear about what my capstone was. Everything was getting messy and I just felt confused and useless. That's when I was inspired by a friend to make and donate masks to a place in need. I then began to do research and ask questions on what I would need to make a mask. I watched videos on how to make them and started. After overcoming some challenges during the process, it was all worth it when I finished over 30 masks in less than two weeks. I researched facilities in need and decided I would donate to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. It felt great giving back in a time of need to a hospital that helped me when I was younger. I wouldn't have been able to do this without the help of some amazing SLA staff.

Tobi Adebayo Capstone

Hey guys! For my senior capstone, I decided to create a website that would be a platform to donate dresses. My original plan was to collect dresses and then hold an in-person prom drive. Due to COVID-19, this was not possible. The dresses that I collect will be used for the following prom season. (2021) Although I was not able to attend my senior prom I attend my junior prom so I knew first hand the financial strain that attending prom brings to a family. If I can help someone to allow another girl to attend her prom I am glad to do so. The process of my capstone was a very challenging one and I faced many obstacles along the way. When looking at the process of how a prom drive could be possible I began to think of the benefits this would bring. I started by getting the word out through social media. Then once I had those who were willing to at I made them sign a contract stating they were giving there dresses away. Switching gears to the website which is that I am the most exciting. This website is easy to maneuver around. I believe this is very important because it helps all backgrounds to be able to access a dress if needed. In the end, I was able to collaborate with girls all over the city to donate dresses. I set a goal of 30 dresses when starting this journey I have fallen short by just a few dresses. With your help, I could reach my goal ;)

My capstone is an informational website called Are You Aware? that talks about different cancers and diseases. I handcrafted awareness ribbons that support a cause to donate money to its corresponding organization. I've changed my idea countless times from making t-shirts to painting phone cases to finally making ribbons and this website. My ultimate goal throughout the whole process was finding a way to help people in need around the world. I've learned about 13 different cancers and diseases while researching and creating my website. You will learn about what these cancers and diseases are, what causes them, the symptoms, how to prevent it, facts, survival rates, and what organization the donation is going to. You can purchase 15 different colored awareness ribbons. Information about each ribbon is on my site. Please feel free to share my Are You Aware? website to your loved ones and donate to make a change somewhere or in someone's life.

For my Capstone, I decided I wanted to do something with the sneaker community. I took it upon myself to make an Instagram page where I would be giving information about when shoes were releasing and more of the ins and outs of the community. Over the course of the year, I would post pictures of certain shoes and let people know when they were coming out and the price for them. Even though they aren’t up yet there will be videos explaining in detail how to get better with certain aspects of obtaining different shoes. The posts were made on a somewhat weekly basis if not weekly at least monthly at different times. With this project, I learned that these sneaker pages take a lot of time to keep up and running. They also can get tedious at times so newfound respect arose for those pages that I got some information from.

For my capstone, I decided to raise money and awareness of poverty in the Dominican Republic by holding a sneaker drive and customizing sneakers to raise money to donate to a charity designated to helping those in need in the smaller areas of the Dominican Republic. The reason I decided on this capstone is when I was 12 years old my mother took my brother and me to the D.R. for the summer. One of the days we were there we visited the small town where my grandma is from, they called it “El Campo” which translated to English means “The Farm”. It was a rural area where everyone survived off of their crops and animals. When we got there we said hello to my family who were all barefoot (by choice) and as we sat on the porch some kids ran up to the house, my aunt told them to show us where they lived. When we followed the kids they brought us to a small shack with dirt floors and only two rooms. I was able to raise over $300 to donate to charity before COVID-19 and am planning to hold my sneaker drive during the summer.

When I first started this Project, My goal was to create Both A song And a music video in an environment that best fits the song. I was able to Make the best instrument that I could write to and Find different locations where I felt as though it would be the best places to film. I was also able to Reserve different Affordable Studio times For me to record, Such as "Platinum Sound Recording Studios" Located in New York. This was going to give me the opportunity to finally create my dream Project. I planned to allow people to realize that A video interfaces with a craftsman and an audience, just as associating an audience to a crowd of people. From multiple points of view, they are a significant vehicle for contemporary mainstream society and technology. Music recordings are as yet an intense hopping off mark for executives to sharpen and investigate their creativity. I Learned that In truth, be that as it may, you don't have to have the freshest, fanciest camera and accomplices to make incredible videos. Cameras have stayed the equivalent since they were developed; they are a "life proof" box that gives you a chance to control how the light enters and hits your photograph/ video taking medium through a little gap. Regardless of how costly or reasonable your camera is, this fundamental actuality continues as before. Although I wasn't able to complete the entire project Due to “Covid”, I was able to bring Knowledge to life, which makes me very proud.
