For my Capstone, I created an online Queer-Straight Alliance (QSA) at Science Leadership Academy, in addition to preparation for the QSA next year. My Capstone began with an inquiry question: How can school communities better support LGBTQ+ students? This question developed over time into another question: In what ways is technology instrumental in overcoming obstacles to connect a community? This Capstone has taken a winding path, with many twists, turns, relocations, and adjustments. The first of many obstacles this year was the asbestos crisis. While the relocation was jarring and unexpected, the online adaptation of school sparked a new vision of what the SLA QSA could be. I created an online SLA QSA, via Discord, a social media platform. Once school returned to being in a physical location, it was a time of adjustment, during which I had to rework many of the plans. From designing posters for the in-school meetings to doing the necessary write-ups for the online SLA QSA to be approved by a lawyer of the Philadelphia School District, I learned and experienced the steps required to overcome the obstacles that come with connecting a community in a time of turmoil. Each time the date and location of the first meeting were determined, there was another relocation. In the end, the online SLA QSA withstood the obstacles that the in-school meetings couldn’t. The final result was an online QSA, as well as a variety of materials that can be used next year, by the future QSA leaders.

For my capstone I was originally going to create a club during school hours for whoever was interested in learning some hiking and camping skills. I was planning on designing flyers to hang up around the school to advertise my club. When the virus hit I had to adjust to the circumstances. I sent out zoom invites to those who had shown interest in the club before school closed. Not everyone was able to log in everytime but I was also able to reach out to people outside my school. In the span of two weeks I was able to host 4 meetings with my friends that were available at the time set. I learned that it is extremely important to be well organized and always have a plan before presenting. Before each meeting I would write down some questions I thought would be asked and answer them so that I was more prepared. I had a lot of fun with these few meetings and being able to teach my peers about something that I am passionate about was amazing. I hope to put these new skills to the test with my club and go on a hiking trip once it is possible.

Originally my capstone project was about making prom dresses, but due to the circumstance I was unable to gather the materials needed to finish. I decided to change my focus on eyelash extensions due to its popularity gain in the beauty industry. I've never done eyelash extensions before, so I decided to start from scratch. I learned independently by watching the process on youtube. I followed a professional lash trainer's tips for eyelash extensions and got familiar with the techniques used. Since I have relatives in the beauty business I was fortunate to have all the materials needed to get me started. After becoming familiar with the process, my mom allowed me to practice on her. Through this experience I learned what motivates me in the beauty business, and I learned to have more patience. The entire process took 2-3 hours per session. If I had more time and without this circumstance I would have interviewed different people in the beauty industry to give their take on how a small change like eyelash extensions can transform someone's confidence. The main goal of this capstone was to find my passion in beauty and take this with me to my future career. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sqvuS9QetFAZx1Pyp2mNR-veBifmQbKwKJX8FEdls88/edit https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sqvuS9QetFAZx1Pyp2mNR-veBifmQbKwKJX8FEdls88/edit

Teyonna Little's and Oszain Bangura's Capstone

The Self-Confidence Project is a research project orchestrated by myself and Oszain Bangura. Together, Oszain and I conducted a thorough study and completed extensive research on self-confidence within the minority adolescent communities. We took this information and formed our website as an accessible way for young women to engage, learn, and build their self-esteem by sharing experiences with others like them. In addition to this, our project included 6 digital interviews with people from different communities, different backgrounds, and different ethnicities. It is extremely crucial to us that the people we asked questions were always comfortable sharing their personal experiences. Consequently, the interviews were made anonymous with a choice of being identified if they wanted. With that being said, our main goal was to capture and accentuate the powerful and esteemed experiences of these young women who reflected on their journey of self-confidence.

Hey guys! For my senior capstone, I decided to create a website that would be a platform to donate dresses. My original plan was to collect dresses and then hold an in-person prom drive. Due to COVID-19, this was not possible. The dresses that I collect will be used for the following prom season. (2021) Although I was not able to attend my senior prom I attend my junior prom so I knew first hand the financial strain that attending prom brings to a family. If I can help someone to allow another girl to attend her prom I am glad to do so. The process of my capstone was a very challenging one and I faced many obstacles along the way. When looking at the process of how a prom drive could be possible I began to think of the benefits this would bring. I started by getting the word out through social media. Then once I had those who were willing to at I made them sign a contract stating they were giving there dresses away. Switching gears to the website which is that I am the most exciting. This website is easy to maneuver around. I believe this is very important because it helps all backgrounds to be able to access a dress if needed. In the end, I was able to collaborate with girls all over the city to donate dresses. I set a goal of 30 dresses when starting this journey I have fallen short by just a few dresses. With your help, I could reach my goal ;)

My capstone is an informational website called Are You Aware? that talks about different cancers and diseases. I handcrafted awareness ribbons that support a cause to donate money to its corresponding organization. I've changed my idea countless times from making t-shirts to painting phone cases to finally making ribbons and this website. My ultimate goal throughout the whole process was finding a way to help people in need around the world. I've learned about 13 different cancers and diseases while researching and creating my website. You will learn about what these cancers and diseases are, what causes them, the symptoms, how to prevent it, facts, survival rates, and what organization the donation is going to. You can purchase 15 different colored awareness ribbons. Information about each ribbon is on my site. Please feel free to share my Are You Aware? website to your loved ones and donate to make a change somewhere or in someone's life.

For my Capstone, I decided I wanted to do something with the sneaker community. I took it upon myself to make an Instagram page where I would be giving information about when shoes were releasing and more of the ins and outs of the community. Over the course of the year, I would post pictures of certain shoes and let people know when they were coming out and the price for them. Even though they aren’t up yet there will be videos explaining in detail how to get better with certain aspects of obtaining different shoes. The posts were made on a somewhat weekly basis if not weekly at least monthly at different times. With this project, I learned that these sneaker pages take a lot of time to keep up and running. They also can get tedious at times so newfound respect arose for those pages that I got some information from.

For my capstone, I decided to raise money and awareness of poverty in the Dominican Republic by holding a sneaker drive and customizing sneakers to raise money to donate to a charity designated to helping those in need in the smaller areas of the Dominican Republic. The reason I decided on this capstone is when I was 12 years old my mother took my brother and me to the D.R. for the summer. One of the days we were there we visited the small town where my grandma is from, they called it “El Campo” which translated to English means “The Farm”. It was a rural area where everyone survived off of their crops and animals. When we got there we said hello to my family who were all barefoot (by choice) and as we sat on the porch some kids ran up to the house, my aunt told them to show us where they lived. When we followed the kids they brought us to a small shack with dirt floors and only two rooms. I was able to raise over $300 to donate to charity before COVID-19 and am planning to hold my sneaker drive during the summer.

When I first started this Project, My goal was to create Both A song And a music video in an environment that best fits the song. I was able to Make the best instrument that I could write to and Find different locations where I felt as though it would be the best places to film. I was also able to Reserve different Affordable Studio times For me to record, Such as "Platinum Sound Recording Studios" Located in New York. This was going to give me the opportunity to finally create my dream Project. I planned to allow people to realize that A video interfaces with a craftsman and an audience, just as associating an audience to a crowd of people. From multiple points of view, they are a significant vehicle for contemporary mainstream society and technology. Music recordings are as yet an intense hopping off mark for executives to sharpen and investigate their creativity. I Learned that In truth, be that as it may, you don't have to have the freshest, fanciest camera and accomplices to make incredible videos. Cameras have stayed the equivalent since they were developed; they are a "life proof" box that gives you a chance to control how the light enters and hits your photograph/ video taking medium through a little gap. Regardless of how costly or reasonable your camera is, this fundamental actuality continues as before. Although I wasn't able to complete the entire project Due to “Covid”, I was able to bring Knowledge to life, which makes me very proud.

Capstone Abstract

For my capstone, I created and ran an Etsy shop where I sold my original artwork. I sold greeting cards, watercolor paintings, collages, and different customized items that I painted/collaged on such as tote bags or jewelry boxes. All the proceeds from the sales I made went to Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program, an organization I am passionate about. When my capstone was finished, I was able to raise over 400$. My capstone process started with research and inquiry, where I learned how to best run my Etsy shop and fleshed out the particulars of my project with the help from my parents and mentor. I then worked hard to amass diverse a body of work that I could sell and set up my shop. Finally, I photographed my products and listed them on my site, marketed my site through social media and email, and shipped out orders. I had to adapt to obstacles throughout my process and not everything turned out as planned, especially because of the impact of COVID-19. Despite this, I am really proud of what I was able to accomplish with my Capstone. I chose to do this project because it combines two things that I am passionate about, art and helping others. It was amazing to be able to let myself have full reign over this project creatively and translate that into a digital business model, and to engage in my passions in a way that will make a difference for the people of my city.

Screencaps of my Etsy shop:

Photos of my products:

Annotated Bibliography

“7 Essential Types of Product Photos.” Etsy, www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/7-essential-types-of-product-photos/22504064051.

This source is another one that has to with taking pictures of your Etsy items. It’s an official Etsy article, which I think is the best because it includes some inside knowledge of the platform. It goes into a bunch of different types of shots that are good to include when you are listing a product online. I never thought to have a scale shot or one that shows the product in action. It also made me think about how I will get clean studio shots for my products. I will need good lighting, a blank background, and a good camera.

“7 Steps to a Successful Start on Etsy.” Etsy, www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/7-steps-to-a-successful-start-on-etsy/22421860924.

This source gave me a baseline of the basics of starting an Etsy shop. I like that it is straight from the source where I will be making my site, so the steps are approved by it. It gave real examples of past Etsy users and how they were able to manage a shop. I was particularly inspired by the section about setting attainable goals, and used that to create my goal of raising 100$ for the Philly Mural Arts Program. I also thought that the advice on making keywords would come in very handy.

“Best Selling Items- Cards.” Etsy.com, Etsy, www.etsy.com/search?q=best selling items cards.

This source is the best selling greeting cards Etsy page. I will use it to look at the pages of the people who are selling the most and look at their designs and setup. I want to learn from those accounts so I can make the most successful shop possible. I noticed that a lot of the greeting cards have included humor or pop culture references so I will definitely keep that in mind when I continue to make mine. In the future, I will look at the tags that people used to list their items with so I can use those some tags for my items.

CBS. “Top Philadelphia Arts Programs To Support.” CBS Philly, CBS Philly, 23 Apr. 2012, philadelphia.cbslocal.com/top-lists/top-philadelphia-arts-programs-to-support/.

This source was very helpful in figuring out what organization I wanted to donate to. I definitely wanted to support something having to do with the arts, so I started with that idea and found this source. Each organization had different pros and cons, and going through that list and made me realize what was important to me in an organization. While I didn’t end up using any of the organizations it mentioned, it let me think of the scope of the city and ultimately led me to the Philly mural arts program, which is where I’ve decided I’ll donate.

Dizon, Anna. “Top 30 Tips for Selling on Etsy From the Pros.” Fit Small Business, 19 Dec. 2019, fitsmallbusiness.com/selling-on-etsy-tips/.

I really like this source because it includes testimony from real Etsy users to show what works and what doesn’t work in running a shop. A lot of them mentioned the use of keywords, which I haven’t really thought about. One mentioned the use of a business card that would be included with orders, and I think I will definitely use that to add to the personal vibe of my site. Another tip had to do with making sure you don’t infringe copyright, which definitely could be an issue with the slogans on my greeting cards.

Furgison, Lisa, et al. “4 Mistakes That Will Tank Your Etsy Shop -.” Bplans Blog, 16 Feb. 2018, articles.bplans.com/4-mistakes-that-will-tank-your-etsy-store/.

I obviously don’t want my shop to fail, and I liked that this article specifically goes into the don’ts of having an Etsy shop. It was specifically interesting to hear about taking photos, because I hadn’t really thought about how the product actually looks online being different than in real life. Same thing with item descriptions. I need to make them sound personal and unique, according to this source. Same thing with search engine optimization. I thought that marketing and views had only to do with social media and getting the word out, but I also have to think about random strangers searching my items.

Pilon, Annie. “10 Awesome Tips for Starting an Etsy Business.” Small Business Trends, 25 Dec. 2018, smallbiztrends.com/2018/06/starting-an-etsy-business.html.

This source was very helpful in giving tips on handling the financial side of my Etsy shop. I have to think a lot about what is going to be appropriate pricing for my products, and this article goes into that. It states that you must always consider time, materials, and profit when finally pricing an item, and I think that that is a great reminder. It also talks about investing in shipping supplies, which I had never thought of. I think it opened the door for a lot of questions about how I should ship certain delicate items. Overall, it made me think more critically about the practical aspects of the store.

“Restorative Justice.” Mural Arts Philadelphia, www.muralarts.org/program/restorative-justice/.

This source is what ultimately made me decide to donate to Mural Arts Philadelphia when my capstone is over. I really loved learning about this program and thought that it was something really worthwhile to donate to. On the website, it talks about the effectiveness of the restorative justice program and I was very impressed by it. I felt that I understood much better what I would be giving my money to. It’s just something that I really stand for, and that is why I decided to include it in my project.

Sonsev, Veronika. “Need For Speed: Etsy Shows That Some Items Are Worth Waiting For.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 22 May 2019, www.forbes.com/sites/veronikasonsev/2019/05/22/need-for-speed-etsy-shows-that-some-items-are-worth-waiting-for/#51580bc25599.

This source was useful to me because it showed an outside perspective on Etsy from a major business publication. The source talks a lot about the uniqueness factor of an Etsy purchase. I have to make sure that my products are things that cannot be bought anywhere. It gave a lot of good stats about the demographics of Etsy and who would be viewing my products. It also mentioned that the personal customer-seller relationship also contributes to Etsy’s success, so I will keep that in mind and try and add some personal touches.

“Want More Studio Time? 5 Killer Productivity Tips for Artists.” Artwork Archive, www.artworkarchive.com/blog/want-more-studio-time-5-killer-productivity-tips-for-artists.

This source was very helpful for me in the practical work side of things. I struggle with staying on-task, especially with large scale projects like this one. I think that I am most likely to be derailed with my art, so I want to use the tips from this source to get ahead of that. I think I learned that I might have to work on times that aren’t specifically designated for capstone, but when I feel most creative and ready to work. I liked the idea that the article presented that when I am done with working on my capstone for the day, I should be intentional about leaving the work in the past and moving on with my day.
