Ajanae Mills Capstone

In March of 2018, I and 9 other amazing girls traveled through the jungle of Yorkin, Costa Rica. In this jungle, we encountered some of the most humbling experiences that inspired me enough to produce an informative presentation on it. Through my experiences with the loving indigenous people of this community, I've learned to be humble and giving. Giving my time, my effort and my thoughtfulness to the community and world around me not only creates a safe space for me but as well as my people. Giving in that community gave children and families water and other human necessities, such as insight on education. 

My process started in a classroom. As I dove deeper into the history and current issues in Costa Rica, I began looking at what specific issues I could bring awareness to. My attention was drawn to education, an important privilege I have had in my life that I sometimes take for granted. My belief in a global education system that gives everyone the opportunity to be educated made me want to find ways to help and get involved. 

So I did through my journey in their village and through my journey in this Capstone project.

Seyni Ndaw Capstone

For my capstone, I documented my first abroad experience to Costa Rica this past summer. I was granted a scholarship by the non-profit organization The Wandering Scholar, which was founded in Philadelphia. They assist high school students who can't otherwise travel abroad to enjoy the experience, either with a host family or a travel group. For 10 days my group and I were in Osa, and for half the time we were on a reserve with experienced marine biologists assisting them with their students, while the other half was spent in a luxury hotel. Throughout my duration I filmed just about everything- our travels between locations, events we hosted, beach clean ups, downtime, etc. Upon my return I put together a blog documenting the pictures and videos as well as journals and reflection posts. I learned a lot about Costa Rican culture such as traditional food, more about the language, dance styles and etiquette. Arielle Moore Capstone

​Abstract

For my capstone, I created a podcast. Having no experience with the medium of radio and audio, you can imagine that starting my own was a definite challenge. First, I considered my target audience: adolescents and young adults. Ultimately, I decided that social awareness, pop-culture, and politics would be the best backdrop for my show. Next, I had to create a name. After polling a few of my peers and searching for inspiration, I stumbled upon the name ‘Get Schooled’. It was short, concise, and not only represented the podcast well but that it was school-based.
Now, I had to find a hosting website for each episode. I learned that SoundCloud lets artists upload their content for free, and it can be streamed from their app. Concluding that this was the most feasible option, I created my SoundCloud page and got to work designing a logo and the content I would use to market my podcast with. 
After collecting all my necessary recording materials, it was time to begin creating each episode. I first made a template for what would be covered in the span of 15-20 minutes, and requested a co-host and ‘student spotlight’ for each week. Coming up with new subject matter on a weekly basis was the most efficient way to ensure a consistent episode schedule. I used Monday & Tuesday to write, Wednesday to record, Thursday to edit, and Friday to upload. This system was time-consuming and hard work, but proved itself to be worth it in the end.

This source was really informative regarding the outreach for my podcast. I don’t have a strong background in marketing so this showed me how to effectively and inexpensively get your message on a larger platform, ultimately having your voice heard. I wanted to make sure that SLA students at least knew about my podcast so that I would have an established audience. For the most part, I’m just using my hosting website and some flyers around the school as promotion and this website talked about getting a strong base as being effective. 

‘Code Switch’ Podcast 
This podcast is a bit more structured, but still maintains the format of a natural, fluid conversation, which I plan to use in my own podcast. I also really like that the show has a playlist of current songs that they encourage their listeners to hear. That is a creative touch that I might consider mirroring with my podcast. I do find a bit of their topics to be more geared toward a different demographic, but I appreciate getting inspiration from all areas.

This book is all about the technical aspect of creating a podcast. Which audio is the best, where to host your podcast, how to record, how to plan your episodes, and so much more. Before knowing how to even begin, I needed a template. This book served as a guide on how to get started and understand the basics of running a podcast. In many instances, I was able to refer to it as a foundation for my new show. A few of its aspects are a bit outdated since this book is almost 4 years old, but its content was very helpful to me nonetheless.

I gained a lot of vital information from this source, although I’m not planning on making my podcast a business. It provided a lot of points about how to manage and market your podcast strategically and successfully which I find to be quite helpful. I will hopefully be able to expand my podcast beyond the borders of SLA and I think this source will put me on the right track to manage and monitor it by myself. It also gave me a lot of information on how to properly plan and strategize in order to have the most fruitful outcome. 

"NPR One" NPR. Accessed January 25, 2018. 
NPR is a tool to search for and create new podcasts. I find it to be incredibly innovative and interesting when searching for inspiration or needing new information about what kinds of podcasts have a large audience. I like getting other aspects of podcasts I wouldn’t usually listen to or that aren’t geared toward my demographic. It allows me to see more than one perspective and learn how to incorporate themes that are transcendent and cater to a plethora of interests. 

‘The Read’ Podcast
Looking for a podcast that candidly comments on aspects of media, pop culture, politics, and everything in between? It’s The Read. Its two clever hosts continuously keep their fingers on the pulse of what everyone’s talking about and their witty banter sets the perfect scene for a podcast. I’ve been pulling a lot of inspiration from this show due to their fast-paced and consistently interesting episodes. As an avid listener, I closely look for what aspects make this show worth listening to each week. A bit of their topics can be a bit vulgar which I tend to stay away from when making my podcast, but I appreciate their honesty.

 Taylor, Mike. “Start a Podcast Now. Here’s How.” Entrepreneur
This article provides a lot of resources on how to upstart your podcast and how to take initiative with the topics and make a clear decision for your show. This article was from more of an 
entrepreneur standpoint, so the business aspect was clearly displayed as well. Being responsible for just about every aspect of my podcast is quite intense, but with the right guidance, it is bound to be successful. Laying out the surface on which to build your vision requires being disciplined enough to educate yourself on the things you didn’t previously know, and this source showed me the importance in asking for help and searching for the materials you need. 

 “How to Actually Create Podcast Intros That Attract Listeners.” Podcast Motor 
What do the people want to hear? That is the question. This article shows the reader what it is that actually builds an audience. I have gained a lot of knowledge from using this source because even though I have social media as a platform for my outreach, I would also like to know what it is that actually keeps listeners consistently tuned. A large part of what attracts listeners is your intro. When creating mine, I needed a place of reference and I found this source to be incredibly helpful.

I’m currently finding it a bit difficult to use social media as a way to expand my voice, but this article has been really helpful in labeling the steps I should take. I appreciate that this source takes a realistic and achievable approach to getting your message across through social media. I want to ultimately enlarge my platform and this article breaks down each aspect that is necessary to do so.

This website shows the time, effort, and logistics that go into starting and running your own podcast. I have never done this before and have no real point of reference, so being able to read about someone else’s experience and draw inspiration has been helpful and benefitted me and the current state of my podcast. I gained a lot of information about how to turn your writing into something people want to hear, and how to incorporate other creative themes into your final product.

I am pleased to share with you all my progress on my senior Capstone 2018 here at Science Leadership Academy. I had a clear idea heading into senior year that this would be the year I finally find out if music is my path. I know many of my friends appreciate my skills musically. It was very important of me to learn more of the technical side of music. In my senior capstone, I decided my theme would be, researching what it means to become a part of the music industry. D=These past several months have consisted of making a studio, writing lyrics, and talking to music producers, all before actually recording my own 6 song EP of self produced music. I learned that in 2018 it is not hard at all to become a soundcloud rapper or rapper in general. The term soundcloud rapper is not an insult nor compliment. I believe it to just be a pro noun for me making music on soundcloud.

William Dos Santos Figueiredo Capstone

​My capstone was a website for any new upcoming student interested in playing soccer for the first time. The World Cup will be happening this summer, therefore, there will be an influx of new interested players, who will want to give soccer a try. I know this, because my first year in this school, was after the 2014 World Cup, where there were over thirty people attempting to play, and many of them had no clue on how the game was played. 
As I was doing this I thoroughly enjoyed learning new things about a sport in which I grew up playing, which I never expected existed. This sport is extremely complicated and it takes a lot to understand, however, it can also be simplified and explained properly and that is what I try to achieve with my website. I am proud and happy with my final product as I have placed a lot of time and work into it. I wish that many people who are interested in playing soccer for the first time will come to my website, where they will receive plenty of information which will perfectly help them on their journey.
In this project, I touched upon the sport in general such as real players and how the world of soccer worked, as well as fitness and the proper training in which these new players must go through to progress and improve. There is also a timeline of their performance and progress as they will know when they are making the right progress, as well as where to go from there. Those interested are also able to subscribe to the website as more posts will be released regarding soccer.

Menduyarka Samuel Dennis Capstone

​Throughout the year, Ella Burrows, Tamir Harper and I mandated a social movement titled “My Justice Story.” It was moved along with the current events that came to light within everyday society. Gun laws and regulations, voter turnout and registration, political awareness, and official conversation were the main topics that we have come to cover throughout this movement. Our original idea was to have an event with TEDx, which came to a conclusion thanks to a denial for our license. Our next step was a partnership with Ignite Philly, which was a great one, but could not meet our time constraints. During our thinking process, the tragedy that is the Parkland school shooting came into fruition, and ignited students from Frederick Douglass High School to speak out against the policies put in place in regards to gun control. This swayed the emotions of the three of us, and we decided to ignite our own movement, as well as rekindle the movement started by the high school students in Florida. We held our own school walkout, which held a turnout of almost half of the student body at Science Leadership Academy, with news coverage coming from 6abc, NBC, PhillyCam, Vice, Generocity, and more. We held a voter registration drive, where students got the chance to register to vote if they were old enough. We set up a booth which contracted student-written letters to elected officials to encourage them to join students in the fight against gun violence. We recorded stories of SLA students sharing their hopes and experiences regarding gun violence, and crafted a beautiful website that entails the continuation of the movement, with hopes to entice students across the globe to help change gun regulation, and encourage students to get involved within the current government affairs.

Gabriel Garcia-Leeds Capstone

​For my capstone, I wrote and recorded a 4 song EP. I focused on challenging myself in both songwriting and production. I wanted to make something that was musically distinct, while still remaining accessible and easy to listen to. Everything on the EP was performed by me - drums, banjo, vocals - and by having total control over the direction of the project, I was able to let myself experiment with the music.
All of the songs were composed during the recording process; I would initially start by recording an instrumental idea - a guitar melody, a unique rhythm - and then add new layers on top until I felt happy with the song. The vocals came last - I didn’t write lyrics and vocal melodies until after I had put together the rest of the songs. This was the most natural songwriting method for me, since I could focus on giving the songs as much depth and complexity as I wanted, while still giving myself room for exploration. This project was the first in which I spent a lot of time mixing. After everything was recorded, I spent hours mixing each song, listening to them in a variety of formats (headphones, speakers, car stereos) to make sure that it sounded good wherever I listened to it. After finalizing the mixes, I mastered the EP. 
I learned a lot about home recording, and how scientific and technical the recording process can become. Overall, the main thing I took away from my capstone was that there are so many components of producing music - especially your own - and that it can easily become a stressful and overwhelming process. The end result, though, makes all the effort worthwhile.

Ryan King Capstone

​ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

From doing my capstone I have learned alot of important things about myself my community and ways that I can go above and beyond to help other people who dont hve the nessecry tools availbel to help themselves.I am proud of what I was bale to be an asset to my community through assisting in raising school spirit and being able to help the less fortunate be able to get to a more rfijned place in their lives.First I did alot of research to get a feel of wht is actually feesable.I decided to partner with SLA CC SPIRIT Commitee to bring fun events to the students of SLA for a small fee which a piece of would go twoards aidning people in need or bringing awareness to the community about what is going on and exactly how they can help.The final product of my capstone was a relly humbling and eye opening experience that I am proud to have been able to do.Being able to help bring someone to a homeless rehibilation center from where they previoulsy were mkes me really proud to be able to do.I have lerned that it does only take 1 person to truly make a difference within the community and be able to be an example of an upstanding communty member which at the end of the day is what I and what everyone should aspire to be.


Chuckie Copeland Capstone

​ I set about my capstone with a grand envisionment that it would encompass everything I wanted my capstone to be, a digital time capsule that new generations of SLA students can access and reflect on from the new SLA location. It would be full of photos, interviews, and possibly videos, all showing what the old SLA looked and felt like. I compiled some articles about the school move, took a handful of photos but I was never able to fully take video and therefore had to scrap that part. At that point however I was midway through the year, I had to buckle down and focus before it got too late. 

I realized there reason I had not taken videos was the fact I was too broad in my capstone focus, therefore I decided that SLA moving schools should be my top priority. I set my sights on something more realistic and tangible, rather than trying to force my capstone to be exactly what I wanted it to be. I spent the rest of the year taking time to interview teachers and students from each grade so I could get a wider and more balanced view on the feeling of the SLA move. Since the interviews were to be my main focus, I adjusted my website accordingly, less text in favor of more listening. The website is mean to let the interviews I took, speak for themselves so as not to dilute the opinions and generalize the feeling of those I interviewed, and let their voices be heard. I am happy with the way my website ended, a concise clear picture of the SLA community in 2018 at its most candid.
