Wes Anderson's The Breakfast Club

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in Reel Reading · Giknis · C Band on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 10:04 pm

Wes Anderson is one of the most recognisable directors out there. His symmetrical style, consistent storylines, choice of color and sound set him apart from other directors and genres to the point where he is his own movie. I decided to imagine what it would look like if Anderson were to direct The Breakfast Club, the beloved film from the 1980’s about high schoolers spending a saturday in detention. I created the following presentation as an potential storyboard for the trailer combining some of the most well known scenes in the film with his directorial flair.

First things first, what would be a Wes Anderson film without Futura font? Parodied by Honest Trailers on Youtube, they pointed out that in every film Anderson has made, he has used that specific font which is true! Therefore, I presented the first slide as the actual title cards of the film. They are in Futura font and yellow, a color predominantly used by Anderson for his title cards. The rest of the writing throughout storyboard is also in yellow Futura font as to be consistent.

The second slide pertains to the opening of the film and has been redone to fit Anderson’s style better. In the original, the quote is said over different cuts of an abandoned school. Since in that time the five principal characters are introduced, I decided to mimic Anderson’s fondness for introducing characters via close ups. Instead of using an abandoned school, I decided to use close ups of each character's face as their stereotype is said and linger for a few seconds. The titling of the slide also includes, “Light background.” which is in reference to Anderson’s color choice, usually settling upon light pastel colors.

The third slide is supposed to be from when all the kids have arrived to detention and they are given a speech by Assistant Principal Vernon, hence the quote. Instead of having the kids all sit in different places and rows, I have organized them together looking up at the whiteboard in boy girl boy girl boy order, to fit as close to symmetrically as possible since there are only five characters. The whiteboard is off slightly from being center but only because I could not move the table over without bumping into the wall. As stated before, Anderson is noted for his use of specific types of color and in my interpretation that has not gone unnoticed. Three of the characters as well as the wall they face are different shades of blue which for this film will be the primary color palette.

On the fourth slide is the only deviation from the original film. There has been a whiteboard added with the word, “Detention” in big bold underlined letters. The idea is here is for a classic Wes Anderson wide long shot. This is what the kids are looking at after all so the camera would hold focus and not move for a good fifteen seconds, there would be a ticking clock in the background but otherwise silent.

For the fifth slide, we have Bill Murray as the assistant principal, so this would be a rare full body shot. Anderson does not normally use body shots but to satisfy symmetrical requirements, Murray’s hand is directly underneath his head on a straight line. He too is also dressed in blue, continuing the color theme for the film.

On the sixth slide of the trailer and just over halfway through, we reach the famous, “Eat. My. Shorts.” line. I set this up with another close up since it is a classic technique he uses, this time though not as close as usual. The background is meant to be a pastel color, most likely a light shade of green, still relating to the blue theme. The face of the “criminal” is centered symmetrically in the frame, because like most films and shots, Anderson emphasizes symmetry to a T.

Next we get to the seventh slide, or the dancing scene. In the original, it’s set to Karla DeVito’s “We are not alone” but in the Wes Anderson version there will be a different tune. Anderson is fond of classic rock songs, generally with guitar and not too loud so the choice of songs is quite numerous to be narrowed down.  The background is going to be a light pastel blue staying continuous with the early color theme. Occasionally Anderson makes a wipe cut where he takes a contiguous part, such as a facial expression or a person standing still, and then cuts to a completely different scene at which the facial expression changes or the person adjusts to their new surroundings. That is what happens here from the dancing to running in the halls, it's meant to be a seamless transition so when the characters dance off frame, they return in a new setting.

Slide eight is the new setting described earlier, therefore the song from the scene before will still be playing as the characters run into frame. At this part, the characters are running in the hallway so the setting changes to blue lockers. As for the characters running, the camera would be on a dolly and follow them as they run down the halls. This mimics scenes where he has side shots of motorcycles driving and the motorcycle appears to stay still, but the setting whips by as the motorcycle drives by. In this instance it would be lockers that fly by behind the characters as they run down the hall.

Slide nine takes place in one of the most poignant scenes of the original film where all the characters open up to one another and reveal something hidden about themselves to the others. This image is meant to be when the girl on the right says “When you grow up, your heart dies.” Though not symmetrical, the image represents a whip pan. A whip pan is where the camera is focused on an object or person then quickly whips to a new subject. When the whip pan is finished the girl on the right will be sandwiched between two boys, bringing back a type of symmetry close to Anderson’s style. Since the girl on the right is the “basket case,” the camera will pause and hold its position. This is intended to let an awkward silence linger over the characters, something Anderson does often to denote a bit of dry humor or moment where someone is out of place.

Lastly we finish with slide ten, a photo of “We are The Breakfast Club!!!” This sentence is ever so slightly paraphrased from the ending when assistant principal Vernon reads the essay written for him. Instead of him holding up the letter and reading it, we have him look down at the letter where we shift to the camera’s point of view. The camera then starts at the top of the page and pans down the paper as it read aloud and when the final words are read, the camera holds on the paper and lingers for a few extra seconds to accentuate the silence in the room where the kids once were.

Chuckie Copeland Capstone

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in Capstone · Baird · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 7:05 pm
I set about my capstone with a grand envisionment that it would encompass everything I wanted my capstone to be, a digital time capsule that new generations of SLA students can access and reflect on from the new SLA location. It would be full of photos, interviews, and possibly videos, all showing what the old SLA looked and felt like. I compiled some articles about the school move, took a handful of photos but I was never able to fully take video and therefore had to scrap that part. At that point however I was midway through the year, I had to buckle down and focus before it got too late.

I realized there reason I had not taken videos was the fact I was too broad in my capstone focus, therefore I decided that SLA moving schools should be my top priority. I set my sights on something more realistic and tangible, rather than trying to force my capstone to be exactly what I wanted it to be. I spent the rest of the year taking time to interview teachers and students from each grade so I could get a wider and more balanced view on the feeling of the SLA move. Since the interviews were to be my main focus, I adjusted my website accordingly, less text in favor of more listening. The website is mean to let the interviews I took, speak for themselves so as not to dilute the opinions and generalize the feeling of those I interviewed, and let their voices be heard. I am happy with the way my website ended, a concise clear picture of the SLA community in 2018 at its most candid.

The Problem with People

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 11:18 am

In October 1917, one event stunned the world and shook politics to its very core, the Russian Revolution. Built upon the principles of Marxism and Leninism, the most recognizable goals was to create a socialist state without economic or social status. During the early days, there was no doubt that the idea worked well. Though some, realistically many, of the former bourgeoisie were upset having lost their power, Soviet citizens rejoiced at the newfound freedoms. As time went on, connections and influence made their way back into society with unacknowledged social classes reforming. Compare this to the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a book chronologizing the adventures and tragedies of school boys on a deserted island without adult supervision. When a group of boys arrive on a deserted island, they form a group to survive. Just like the Revolution and numerous other uprisings, the boys too fell into the trap of organizing social classes from a classless society. Therefore it can be stated that when a group is created, even if it is for the goal of unifying the public equally, the group ends up benefiting a certain few.

The Lord of the Flies is a book chock full of analogies, references, and inferences to be made into today’s society. One of these is a distribution and confluence of power. Since the boys all arrive and meet up on an island without grown ups, they get to start anew as they try to survive. One of these ways was electing a chief to run the group and so the classes again re-form, starting with the words of a boy named Jack Merridew. “‘I ought to be chief,’ Jack said with a simple arrogance, ‘because I’m chapter chorister and head boy.’” (22) Even though the boys cannot entirely see it, Jack is trying to use his past social status, much like bourgeois did in the Russian Revolution, to gain influence and an advantage in the new, naive society. Although in the end, Ralph, another boy who stood quiet and held a conch for the whole time, is elected chief, a resentment would build in Jack and reveal itself at a later time. That resentment, stems from a loss of power which needs to be regained.

Similarly to the boys, the complete upheaval of social order during the Russian Revolution made many upper class citizens lose their power, and many of them were unhappy with that fact. One of the driving forces behind the Revolution was the Marxist/Leninist belief that a classless social system with common ownership of the means of production and with full social equality of all members of society, was one that was most effective and fair. This belief however, would be trampled almost instantly. As described by Polish defector, Józef Światło, in 1953 when he defected to the west, one of Poland’s top party members, Boleslaw Bierut had “No less than ten lavishly and luxuriously furnished palaces … all fitted out with legendary magnificence.” Now in today’s society, capitalism allows for such people to have that many residences. In the 1950s communist bloc, that was direct contradiction of the Revolutions’ beliefs of classless society. When the boys on the island in the Lord of the Flies originally create their work groups, they actually create social structure!

That social structure comes to a head towards the middle of the Lord of the Flies when Jack (now leader of the hunters) begins to argue with Ralph, the chief, about purposes of each group. “You and your fire!” Jack blames Ralph, of not having purpose and pushing his agenda too much. Ralph responds, “All you can talk about is pig, pig pig!” Which Jack counters with, “Because we want meat!” (54) The exchange of hostilities exemplifies how from creating the classless group, the boys have degenerated to insulting each other's worth. The insulting is due to the conflicting ideals and goals of each member and they do not seem to be working together. So even as the boys try to work together for survival, the refusal to put aside differences eventually would split the group for all the wrong reasons and create a new structural order.

Much like the boys, members of the Soviet Union also began to split themselves socially. The Party officials and members of higher status families (diplomats, state factory owners) were more likely to reap the benefits of the proletarians (workers and lower classes). “This [upper] class enjoyed privileges such as roomy apartments, country dachas... access to special stores, schools, medical facilities...Members of the urban working class (proletariat), in whose name the Party purported to rule, generally lived in cramped apartment complexes, spent hours each day standing in line to buy food and other necessities.” Looking back to the original goal of the Russian revolution however, this rigid and unfair structure clearly blasts the original Marxist-Leninist belief and proves how a revolution for all turned into a Country for few. Much like how Jack would splinter into a group to accomplish his goals.

Frustrated with the lack of attention he is being given with his goal of eating meat, Jack finally becomes fed up and announces, “ I’m going off by myself. He [Ralph] can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants hunt when I do can come too.”(127) This split now signifies the full separation of social order on the island. You have Jack on the one hand who wants to find meat, compared to Ralph who wishes to create fire so the boys can be noticed. Jack who has slowly gained more power over time, now seizes the opportunity to split and reap the benefits, much like Stalin did. Ralph would then represent the proletariat, who would be weak and oppressed. Now not so like under Stalin but the lack of a hunting group and still using a relic of a bygone era (conch=Patriotic fervor) puts Ralph at a huge disadvantage and gives all the power and benefits of the group to Jack.

So after all this, one might wonder what is even the point of creating a group if only a few will be the true winners? The counter to that is that these are extreme cases. In a smaller group, ideas and power tends to be more equally shared, however when working under stressful situations, and or with a very large amount of people it is bound to happen that a certain few will manipulate the group to them. Whether it be Communist Party officials taking advantage of their Political status to gain wealth and luxury, or a boy using his influence over an important group so he can eat meat, there is no true instance that has ever proved people working together, benefitted everyone.

ILP Drexel

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in Advisory Sophomore - Baird - adv on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 3:25 pm
I finished taking a college class at Drexel University this part March. It was a course that I had been apart of from January and it went extremely well. I finished the course with a higher than expected grade and even got a recommendation for further studies by the professor. It was not a relatively difficult class and it was definitely one that I would recommend to other Drexel Prospects.  For an ILP that I thought would eat up a lot of time, I was able to mange both SLA and it quite well in my opinion.

That's How it Usually Goes

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at 4:21 pm

They said “bye Ozzie!” and I tried to go with them, but they shut the door in my face. (pause) That’s how it usually goes, they leave and I’m left alone here like most every single day. I spent the first 10 minutes trying to open the door and go after them but because of my body disfiguration (looks at hands and sighs), I couldn’t unlock the door. I cried and whined as I can’t speak and waited in hope that they would come back for me, but to no avail. Sitting in front of the door I pondered why they would want to leave me alone as they said to me every day when I was young that they loved me.

Knowing that I was destined to be alone for the rest of the day, I then played with my favorite stuffed animal, whom they called “Winky”. “Winky” I had picked out at the consignment shop when I was less than a year old .The name originates from the fact “Winky” only came with one eye. I didn’t care as over the years “Winky” has given me the comfort I couldn’t get from anyone else. Calming down with one of my favorite friends, I asked Winky what I should do for the rest of the day. Nobody else can hear Winky, but he said that I should eat as eating always calms me down.

I went to the food they had left out for me and solemnly ate it. However, I was concentrating too much on how bored I was going to be that I ate my food all at once not even leaving a single crumb for me to eat later. (gets exasperated) I washed down my guilt with a nice few gulps of water and proceeded to go into my own room. My own room is very small, much more so than what the others have. I walked into and sat on the one piece of furniture I had, my bed. There I looked at all the stuffed animals I had beside me and wondered why I couldn’t have real live friends. The others had friends who came over very often always making a ruckus and playing with me as if I were a toy. Why can’t they understand that I am living like everyone else! (Gets emotional sadly and frustrated)

Whenever they take me outside, people look at me as if I am some sort of alien. Everyone wants to touch me and they always act as if I am a baby and speak to me in that super annoying, “sweety” (puppy dog voice)voice.(end sad and frustrated) Reflecting on it I get so upset but in the moment like many other things, I don’t mind because I forget my troubles. I love being outside, getting attention, and most of all, seeing my friends. They take me every other day around 3:30 pm to the park, so they call it. There I usually see my mentor Boris who has been on this planet beyond his years and everyday I listen to his teachings of life. I also meet Yuma, Chester, and Monet whom are my best play buddies and best friends. (gets happy and excited) Everyday we play tag and see who is the best in our boxing games and I admit I usually come out the loser. However, there are usually two others who really make me so very happy. She comes every day so I hear, with her other, Stephanie. When I have seen her, my heart melts into a pool of desire swirling around with hope and a twinge of despair as she only hangs out with her friends and the jocks. (becomes sad and pensive)

(end pensiveness) But enough talk about my daydreaming, I must tell you what else happened so far. After my longing to see the outside, I decided to have fun. I brought Winky with me to the big bedroom the largest others slept in. I flung Winky onto the bed and got onto the bed after him. Relaxing, we talked about how I found him and then we jumped on the bed together, pretending it was a trampoline. In our great fun I accidentally knocked over those big fluffy things they call pillows, but I didn’t bother to put them back. Then Winky made the great suggestion of getting more to eat. I was famished so we both went to where they stored my food. The others stacked it so high I became despondent until Winky told me where the others stored their food.

Then became what Winky and I will call The Great Fridge Raid Escapade. I latched onto the big slippery handle with my teeth creating some scratches and pulled with all my might to open the huge metal wall guarding what they hoard for themselves. I eventually succeeded and jumped up into the fridge grabbing my favorite snack,Carrots. I ripped the bag open and ate them all as fast I could leaving bits of plastic on the floor and creating a mess. I decided to try some more exotic foods such as a leafy thing titled Kale, note to self NEVER EAT AGAIN, Chocolate sauce and peanut butter. I think I still have a tummy ache still from the food I ate.

After closing the Fridge door I came to where I am now, back in my room, I don’t know when they will return and when they do they’ll scold me for a mess that I cannot remedy, play with me and then toss me aside for those glowing metal shiny things. I have pondered my fate, destined to…. (hears knock on the doors or unlock of door) THEY’RE HOME!!!!!  (Super Excited and runs off stage.)

The Trifecta: A Complicated Balancing Act

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 5:49 pm

It was at summer camp, we were sitting on the Rainbow Treebench. I stopped staring at the other people near our cabins and looked over my shoulder. “You know, I got something to say to you.”

“Really? What’s that?”

“Well, you know me and I know you quite well,”

“Uh huh.”

“I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’ve never met someone like you and probably never will again. I cherish this friendship of ours and I’ve been looking for a best friend. I offer the title to you, do you accept?”

Those were the words I used at 11:43 pm one July night this past summer. I spoke with fear, uncertainty, and emotion. All three of which, are characteristics I rarely exhibit in public. Now I won’t tell you the end of the story, as I have a very private personality and don’t like to share those types of details. The main point, I should point out, is that most people know me to speak with confidence and with authority, as well as trying be non emotional as possible. I know that I speak very differently in different situations but why? I think it’s my past that holds the secrets.

You see we all speak a different language, whether it be Pig Latin, German, or one of the other 6000 plus languages spoken. There is however another thing that sets us apart, out tone and manner in which we speak, for each person they have their own very unique past. Although they may choose not to reveal it, it comes out in the words they speak. Some may speak in a very personal manner or others in a distant and monotone way as I prefer. You see, as Richard Rodriguez writes about his childhood, “Outside the house was public society, inside was private.” We all have our boundaries, whether it be our school, home, or friends. For each of those situations, we all speak differently, a different coding or programming for the different places and people in our lives. See our parents may try to rear us in a manner that is proper to them so they may request that their son or daughter speak politely and so as sons and daughters we do. When we are around friends however, they may not care or have the same values as our parents and that allows us to talk however we feel.

When you meet a new person, some may opt to say nothing and give a polite nod of the head as I do, others may choose to greet them with a nice hello and a handshake like the rest of my family. This is all is dependent on our background and upbringing, as well as where we come from geographically. As James Baldwin wrote, “A Frenchman living in Paris speaks a subtly and crucially different language from that of the man living in Marseilles; neither sounds very much like a man living in Quebec;” I speak English and even though at least 220 millions others do as well, each of us has a distinct "Speak". Our “Speaks” can set us apart from others by the words we use, tone, pronunciation and so on, giving ourselves our own method uniqueness.

At school and in most any place I speak as Richard Rodriguez describes about his school memories, I speak, “Directed towards a general audience, words meaningfully said and clearly spoken.” I tend to also be more general with my sentences, making sure to include as much details of my audience as possible. By doing so I can create an authoritative and inclusive setting. I also tend to bring in very big words to portray how knowledgeable I am. A great example was my daily conversations with my old history teacher.

“How are you doing today Chuckie?”

“I am doing alright, a bit exhausted and exasperated about members for a group project I am doing.”

I need not to go further as the key word is “exasperated.” I am pretty sure that most kids would use the word “annoyed” because that is the word they know for this type of situation. I, on the other hand happen to know the definition which I will refrain from stating as not to bore you. Before I continue, even now I write in a "Speak" that is completely different than my others. I have a writing "Speak", as well as my general and personal "Speak". My writing "Speak" is such that only when I write can I say what I want to and not trip myself up while thinking on the fly compared to speaking what I want and saying the possible way. However, my favorite and most reserved "Speak", is my personal tone, only revealed to my closest confidants. I never use it in a public situation, and if I do it is all by accident.

My personal “Speak” is filled with a oodles of emotion, dancing from happiness to query in a single sentence, then dodging fear and landing on uncertainty in the next. It decloaks my hidden side from those who are not worthy of reading the book about my past. See, some event happened in my past, and it showed me how susceptible I was to ridicule shutting me off from my old way of speaking. I made a complete turn with the way I began to speak to people in public whom I didn’t know well, and only when people have gained my trust do I feel comfortable speaking my personal “Speak.”

So now that I have given you a glance of what it is like to be Chuckie, I should sum up things. Trying to balance other people's opinions and feelings as well as my way of talking is tough. Sometimes when I try and switch between the three “Speaks” things get jumbled, said the wrong way, or lost in translation. I do change my “Speak” for the people I’m around because otherwise I would be a mess, a very confusing one no less. Being me however, represents us all and each person's distinct way of being and language to others.

Here's an idea America, go back to school!

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in English 1 - Giknis - X on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11:56 pm

To every story, or at least most, there is a beginning, middle, and end. In my journey through American Historical, Political, and Civics, I started at the bottom of American knowledge. Moving through my own research, things got worse. People did a lot worse on my test for this topic, with approximately 75% of people failing to answer (a minimum) 6 questions correct. As of now, nothing has and is being done to change American Intelligence. The truth is, the American government does not care to do anything because if the public is ill-informed it benefits those elected. What is even more disheartening is without awareness at the least of american ignorance, the trend will continue of Americans failing to pick candidates for elections who accurately represent their views. Some of you may be confused so here is the explanation. My topic covers civics and politics, and politics was the category citizens were least proficient in. Not being proficient or knowledgeable in politics has a huge downside because when election season comes around, those who are clueless (in politics) are more likely to pick a candidate that is manipulative and does not represent their views because they have no idea what they are doing. Instead of handing out flyers on elections days saying which candidate believes in what, education before hand and at young age is the best way to cure ignorance.

My graph from Last Blog showing the disconnect of knowledge

Education, however effective it may be, has its faults and weaknesses. The biggest weakness being that students will not remember most of the information they are taught. That though, is another issue. Other methods would be as I first suggested, handing out informational pamphlets every election. The disadvantages with that, is you have to repeat the process, waste paper and you don’t actually plug the leak, you just mop up the drops. A third course of action would be to call out politicians for not being honest. That would be too time consuming, irrelevant and the amount of pushback from government you would get would be too much to handle. Considering all that I stuck with Choice 1, education. Now I had to zoom my lense in even more, did I want to petition the School district to teach 12th graders about elections or should I make a generalized lesson plan for teachers to use. The lesson plan is what I did, it could be used any time and is more accessible as well as adaptable. So I got a template/example from a teacher here at SLA who teaches some political happenings, and I modified it to fit my subject.

Screenshot 2015-05-29 at 23.51.41.png

A screenshot of my LP

As a short description, this lesson plan who have the class mainly focus on researching candidates and comparing what for say, is in the papers, to what's on a non partisan or non candidature affiliated website. I chose this to be the focus because if not everyone has access to the neutral websites, through research they could deduce the most accurate and or honest medium of information.

Change is slow and most likely come to light when the next election rolls around as my LP was not finished in time to be used. That part disappoints me, but working on an LP is no picnic and you have to make sure it covers what you want. I wanted to show what information people are missing out on and prove that being uneducated is detrimental. Having done all 3 parts, I feel baffled at the lack of knowledge on the topic from the public as it is not uncommon to be wrong on this topic. I also feel that could have done something else, but appealing to the public is a daunting task as they aren’t very open to or willing to change their habits/ways.

Going over it all, the one part I would have changed was the focus of my LP. Being too specific missed out on the other important topics that I had worked on and excluding them was as if I had done the work for naught. Though you, yes you! Can make my time well spent by taking the time so when you grow up and vote, you vote with confidence that you made the right choice for you. You help the country (and me!) by weeding out the unqualified and adding the right people to politics. Be the better person and study up when voting, you’ll thank yourself for being smarter than the average citizen.

America, Get Smart!

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in English 1 - Giknis - X on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 10:19 pm

Thank goodness America, we can name the Vice President, but America, who is the Head of The Supreme Court? America? America? Yea well that is what we all expected. In my first report about how much America knows about itself, research really hammered the country showing that we really are clueless when it comes to Civics, Politics, and History. Especially when it comes to taking a test on said information. In my own research based off the United States Immigration Test flash cards and other sources, the results were… Worse than expected!

At the most simplest terms, this chart below shows how many participants passed and how many participants failed the test.

A study by Xavier University found that 35% of Americans would fail a 10 question immigration test (You had to get 6 questions correct to pass). So I created a 10 question test of my own to see whether that was true.  The mode of all my responses, was a total of 3 correct answers! Yes it may be harder for younger people, but these questions ranged from the most basic questions ever, to those that might require more background knowledge. I got 30 responses and as they kept coming in, the results got worse and worse. An answer for the question, “Who did the USA gain independence from?” was, and I am not joking, “Abe Lincoln.” Now for those with less time on this earth than others or maybe those who aren't the best at academic studies, Abe Lincoln is not a country. Though in some categories participants excelled, such as naming the Vice President and only one of the answers was wrong. Compare that though, to the 30% of people who could not name the Vice President according to a scathing Op-Ed piece in the New York Times. The article not only smashes the American public on that, but just about general knowledge as well. Back to my report though; all in all 22 of my subjects, (73% of participants) people failed the test. Thanks to more research a reason appeared.

Screenshot 2015-05-11 at 9.24.04 PM.pngScreenshot 2015-05-11 at 9.24.16 PM.png

The now immortalized Abe Lincoln answer.

The Pew Research Center conducted a survey of American news outlets and the results were quite captivating. It found that more and more citizens are “deserting news outlets because it no longer provides the news and information they had grown accustomed to.” To top that off, “campaign reporters were acting primarily as megaphones, rather than as investigators, of the assertions put forward by the candidates and other political partisans.” I find it surprising that this was identified earlier. The news in America is not much of an informational outlet or source, but just a method to spew bloated stories full of misrepresentations to the American public. Unfortunately and truthfully we cannot blame our lack of education on the news, but part of the problem is lack of early studies on these topics.

As it should be known, education is a very hot topic and commodity these days, as you might have heard about lack of education funding or restructuring of Standardized Testing, but my guess is that you have not heard about the lack of history teaching. My theory is and unfortunately I was not able to corroborate this with other research, that the interest and amount of history knowledge correlates to the amount of political education you have. Since this is a theory I would like to remind readers that this is not confirmed but this is purely an opinion of mine. If any of my readers find a source that supports this, please do let me know. There is one last piece of the puzzle missing, and that is how to stem the tide of this disease

Knowing is one thing, acting upon knowledge is another and so I plan to do so. Since most of my testing, research, and focus was on politics, I plan to make a lesson plan about elections candidates and who to vote for. More specifically this will go towards newly registered voters who might need coaching, especially with a midterm election coming up. The goal of this lesson will be to properly and without bias, educate voters on each candidate. Thier background, political, social and personal beliefs and platforms. As well as other relevant knowledge. It may be boring but each voting age person plays a key role, I mean without voters where would this Republic stand? Without voters our country will not function properly and the people will become dissatisfied, but by voting and doing your civic duty, you can prevent chaos and make your voice heard.

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in English 1 - Giknis - X on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 11:47 pm

Which country won the Vietnam war? Who is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? What is the number of voting representatives in the House of Representatives? Can’t answer those questions? Chances are you are not alone, as most of the American population cannot answer basic questions about US civics, politics and history. That is not acceptable and I am here to help solve the crisis.

How did I come to know about the problem at hand? It came to light from of all media, a Youtube video. This video accurately showed that the majority of the American public does not know basic information. For one of the questions, most responses to “Name a country that begins with u,” were “Utah.” Utah is not country, the United States of America is. An overlooked problem in our society is that the citizens are not fully informed about the country they live in. It has always frustrated me to see that citizens who grew up in a school system, which although is not the greatest, can’t remember the topics they learned in class or in school.

“Americans Don't Know Much About History” reads the title of an NBC article, detailing the lack of knowledge the country as a whole has. This could be the fact that our education system and our method of news distribution has been . I am not fond of American news agencies for their constant repetition of information and only reporting about the “breaking news.” One might at least know, from all of the ad hominem thrown at the public, what some current issues are and maybe basic facts. But no, an article by Mic.com on a study done by Ispos-MORI, shows that our country is the 2nd most ignorant in the world when it comes to knowing about social issues and topics.

M2IwNzQzOTg5YSMvRlBoVXBNeUJLTUNHVTl1c2k2TFhHc1pHcHg4PS8xMXg0MTo4OTR4NTk4Lzg0MHg1MzAvZmlsdGVyczpxdWFsaXR5KDcwKS9odHRwOi8vczMuYW1h.jpg

This infographic above is a great showing of where we fall on the ignorance scale.

What does not being informed mean to the country though? By not being informed, the country will not be able to make decisions that help the situation. Like immigration, most citizens know that illegal immigrants cross the border, but many don’t know that immigrants legally take the citizenship test have a 97% chance of passing! What does this have to do with the situation? Well the whole test is about American civics and politics so Americans should pass with ease, right? Wait for it, 1 out of 3 naturalized citizens would fail the test. If the number of answers right needed to pass the test was 7 instead of 6, 1 out of 2 naturalized citizens would fail. What does this all say about our country? That we are losers and or stupid? No, it says we need to study more and be engaged in the topics that affect us allScreenshot 2015-04-24 at 11.41.34 PM.png

This above is the chart on how many native citizens would actually still get to live in the country if they had to take a citizenship test to determine their status.

After reading this, some might say, “Who cares? The government makes the decisions and not me, besides I already am informed about this country.” It does make a difference on what you know,  this country is a republic and built off the people. I hope to see throughout the course of this project, that citizens will all take charge of our American knowledge and strive to learn about the country we call home. It is a civic duty to be informed. Our country must enlighten itself.

Q3 Art Reflection

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in Art - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 8:52 am

  • a. What do you feel like you accomplished with your final drawing?  (keeping the rubric in mind. 20pts. - back wall, 20pts. side wall, 20pts. ceiling, 20pts. floor, 20pts. table/chair = 100pts.
The most that I accomplished/finished would be one side wall the ceiling back wall and part of a table and chairs. I could not complete another side wall, which was disappointment. I feel the best work was my table and back wall.
  • b. What would you change or differently if you could do this project again?
I would work faster considering how far I got but I think everything else looks good. I bet part of my drawing is crooked and that is something I definitely need to work on, but that is minor compared to other parts.
  • c. Find a drawing on the wall that you think is successful. Describe it. Why is it successful?
Right below and a bit to the left of Ms. Hull's mural thingy, a beautiful drawing caught my eye. Everything in the drawing is expertly done, two walls were made, the room looks professional. All that really makes a successfuldrawing as it fulfilled all parts in a tasteful manner.
  • d. What did you learn about one point perspective?
Orthogonals, lots of them. Also remember everything is parallel or perpendicular in space so just keep that in mind. If you have a one point, focus on that point and if one line is crooked the whole drawing could be thrown off.

Net Neutrality, Does It Really Matter?

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 11:05 am

Look at the picture, this could be the world we live in if nothing good happens for Net Neutrality. First off, what is Net Neutrality? Net Neutrality is the idea (could be law as well) that all internet data is treated equally without regards to anything else, it's just data. What could happen as soon as the 26 of February, is that you might have to pay for faster speeds on your browser and anything relating to your connection speeds. Look at it this way, to watch your favorite YouTube videos you'll have to pay more for what you should already be getting! Now before you go telling people Net Neutrality is better than no Net Neutrality, you have to learn some of the drawbacks of Net Neutrality.

According to The Forbes Business Journal, the main point that people have missed, "is that ISPs and the companies that control the Internet backbone infrastructure that knits everything together do not have the power to pick winners and losers either." In fact the author says, "Consumers decide what products and services are successful because we adopt them." Those points are very different than what the people who support Net Neutrality say. Supporters of Net Neutrality argue that, "there have been no rules in place to prevent ISPs from blocking content." Looking at that fact, an ISP could do whatever they wanted for their own gain. Is there a way to stop ISP's from doing what they please?

In fact, yes there is a way to stop ISP's if you are for Net Neutrality. The website dearfcc.org helps you write a personal letter to the FCC (Federal Communications Commision) to push them to vote in favor of Net Neutrality. There is a hitch with that though, what if you are against Net Neutrality? The article on Forbes gives good reasons to be against Net Neutrality, like paying for different Ice Creams. Some may ask that me as the writer, do I have any opinions on this topic? I would say I do have an opinion, to a point. Since I am not you, I encourage you to choose what you think is right, after all, it's the World Wide Web and the Internet, and you don't want those to go away do you?

My second simple slide

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b1 on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 9:01 am

This new slide that I have made still embodies some of the same ideas as my last slide, contrast and simplicity. This time, I slightly decreased the text size this time, because for the text to fully fit, it had to be lessened in size.  I thought about bleeding the sky in some sort, but my conclusion was that bleeding would lose the grasp of the subject, just like the first slide. The colors were chosen with more thought now. Blue and white I felt were still good to have from the first slide, but people told me red didn’t work well on the last slide, so this time I chose yellow. I chose yellow instead of red this time, because the yellow stood out more,  this time standing out more than the red, blue, and white. The has more of a contrast which I think makes a better meaning to the quote than before. I moved the text to the middle at the horizon because its at the cusp now of greatness or failure. The text type was chosen with intention. The thought behind was that the semi soft text represents a sort of boundary how it can be straight (like the words) but soft (the individual letters). I made the text slightly different because although people said it didn’t really go well with the slide, I felt the text made the quote. While we see the text, you notice it is capitalized? Well I did that to show that each word is a part of a sentence like a minute is part of an hour.

My Simple Slide

Posted by Gabriel Copeland in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 11:39 am
My slide is all about the contrast and simplicity. I planed to have my text be big enough to see, but small enough to show the enormity of the idea. I thought about bleeding the sky in some sort, but my conclusion was that bleeding would lose the grasp of the subject. The colors were deliberate. I chose the blue and white to describe the sense of peace, but the red text shows how within peace there is conflict. I chose red instead of another color because the red melded and blended with the blue and white creating almost this harmony within the contrast of colors(Think of the US flag). Having my text at the bottom is supposed to be a starting point for curiosity leaving all that white (not entirely) space open to wander. Even the text type was chosen with intention. The thought behind was that the semi soft text represents a sort of boundary how it can be straight (like the words) but soft (the individual letters). While we see the text, you notice it is capitalized? Well I did that to show that each word is a part of a sentence like a minute is part of an hour. Lastly I touched upon emptiness to make this slide a full circle of my life by showing how much is left to be explored.

My LAN consists of three electronics, my Chromebook, my home desktop, and my phone, pretty simple. Going through the learning process was quite an experience, for before this I had ever really taken this to detail. If there was one moment that changed things, it was when I learned about how detailed acceptable use policies are. AUP’s are so detailed that whenever I sign up for something now, I always and I mean always now read the AUP. Whenever you get an ISP always make sure you get what you pay for because companies are known for a bait-and-switch tactic.
