Amy Farrell Capstone

Posted by Amy Farrell in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at 3:06 pm

For my senior year at Science Leadership Academy, I decided to center my capstone around the last of our core values - reflection. This project has allowed me to reflect on my 4 years of high school and see how I’ve changed and grown. I’ve thought about who I used to be, who I wanted to be, and how the circumstances in my life during those 4 years lead me to be the person that I am today. I’ve thought about what I would tell myself during the hard times that I’ve faced, and about the things that I should of done differently. This has allowed me to come to peace with myself in many ways. I’ve put this together in one website to show how I’ve grown as a photographer and how I realized what I needed to do for myself in order to be happy, which will allow me to help others.

Bibliography

**This bibliography was created in the beginning of the year when I was planning on doing a different idea, but the photographer's inspiration still applies**

1.)

Vilder, Muir. "Folio | Muir Vidler." Muir Vidler. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://muirvidler.com/folio-personal/>.

Muir Vildler is a photographer from California that has shot for publications such as i.D magazine and New York Times magazine. The specific link I chose for this source is a collection of his portfolio shots. The majority of his photography is alternative and shows a different perspective of people that others wouldn’t normally pay attention to. This is a beneficial source for me to use because it inspires me to take photos of everything all the time, even if I’m scared. He does little editing to his photos, which makes me consider doing the same to my photos.

2.)

Hamada, Hideaki. "Hideaki Hamada Photography - People." Hideaki Hamada Photography. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://hideakihamada.com/people>.

This source is a link to all of Hideaki Hamada’s work. Hideaki is a Japan based photographer who has a light, airy feel to her photos. She shoots all different types of photographs, such as portraits, travel, and editorials. Her travel photos make me think of how powerful and important location is for photos. Her most recent portrait photos feature a young woman whose face is almost hidden in each photo. This gives me an idea to hide the identity of students who wish to remain anonymous by photographing a specific part of them, such as their hands or an article of clothing that’s important to them.

3.)

Reid, Ian. "Ian Reid's Photos Are Just as Crazy as His Skateboarding Videos | VICE | United States." VICE. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.vice.com/read/ian-reids-photos-are-just-as-crazy-as-his-skateboarding-antics-323>.

This is an interview with Ian Reed for Vice magazine. Ian Reed started off as a skateboarder and skate filmer, which inspired him to become a photographer. He shoots risque photos and videos, such as a naked man being barbequed alive. This interview is beneficial to me because it helps me gain motivation to stretch the limits of photography and shoot things that  I believe will make a good photo, even if people feel uncomfortable. He established his career by doing what he loves everyday, which is my goal for the future. He taught me that if I work hard everyday, then it’s possible for me to do the same.

4.)

Collins, Petra. "Petra Collins." Petra Collins. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.petracollins.com/>.

Petra Collins is a New York based photographer who has worked with publications such as Vogue and Paper Mag. I chose to use her as a resource because not many female photographers get the credit they deserve, and I feel like Petra’s work in underrated. It’s not the traditional theme of photography that most people expect, and that’s why I like it. She plays with lighting and locations, and lighting is something that I’m interested in. Most of her work is published in magazines, which is something that I aspire to do. It would be amazing if this project could be compiled into a zine, but that would have to be something to work on in the future.

5.)

Elterman, Brad. "Brad Elterman." Brad Elterman. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.bradelterman.com/>.

Brad Elterman is known for his photographs of celebrities, particularly in the 80s. Brad made his career successful by being outgoing and bold, especially when he was a teenager. This link is directed to his photography portfolio. This source is useful to me because Brad motivates me to not be afraid of taking photos of people all the time. He captures people in their natural habitat, and makes every shoot look impromtu.

6.)

Ang, Ying. "Ying Ang - Photography." Ying Ang. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.yingangphoto.com/page.cfm?id=36&subid=109>.

This source is Ying Ang’s portfolio. Ying lives in Australia and edits her photos to appear soft and nostalgic. Part of me wants to edit my photos to look like they were shot with film, and the other part of me wants to make it look as digital as possible. This is a great source for me because Ying incorporates both into her photos, which I hope to do in order to create a happy medium in my photos. Her work motivated me to choose to edit my photos to appear crisp and digital while still being soft to make them more emotional.

7.)

Fu, Vivian. "Me and Tim." Vivian Fu. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://vivianfu.com/>.

Vivian Fu is a San Francisco based photographer with a BA in fine arts, specifically photography. This source is a link to her online portfolio where all of her work is organized and displayed. Her photos are very intimate and are often of herself using self timer. She inspires me as a female photographer to be more creative and to take more pictures of myself that are honest and open. I can incorporate this into my capstone by taking pictures of people from different perspectives and choosing which one represents their hidden side the best.

8.)

Sophia, Cheyenne. "CHEYENNE SOPHIA." CHEYENNE SOPHIA. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://cheyennesophia.com/>.

In her photography, Cheyenne Sophia has a similar style to Petra Collins. She also focuses on colorful lights and female models, but Cheyenne’s work has more shadows and darkness to it. I resonate with Cheyenne more because the low lighting and bright colors is what attracts me the most. Although I probably won’t be taking my photos like this for my project, I was able to use this source to make this decision.

9.)

Nieratko, Chris. "Ed Templeton On His New Book and Life After Skateboarding | VICE | United States." VICE. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.vice.com/read/ed-templeton-on-his-new-book-and-life-after-skateboarding-333>.

This source is an interview with Ed Templton for Vice magazine. Ed Templeton is known for being a pro skater, but also for his amazing photography. He often takes street portraits, but still has planned photoshoots also.  This interview discusses his new photography book that’s being released. After viewing this interview, I started to explore more of Ed’s work and thinking about how my photos are similar yet different to his. My capstone is going to be a planned photoshoot, but I can incorporate Ed’s style into it by making the photos seem as though they were taken candidly.

10.)

Marks, Matthew. "Nan Goldin - Selected Works - Matthew Marks Gallery." Nan Goldin - Selected Works - Matthew Marks Gallery. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.matthewmarks.com/new-york/artists/nan-goldin/selected-works/>.

This source is a link to a bio about Nan Goldin featuring some of her photos written by Matthew Marks. Nan Goldin is a New York & Paris based photographer. She’s known for changing the underground  scene of photography in the 80s due to her presentation of her overly-saturated, risque photos. Her photos are typically unglamorous shots of beautiful people that show how real they still are. This made me think of an idea for my capstone - I could tell all the girls that I will be photographing to appear as natural as possible for their photo by not doing their hair or makeup.

When it comes to the SLA community, I think that it’s pretty clear how passionate their players can get when it comes to showing their love for a sport. For one ultimate player, Imani Holness, this movie/ documentary is meant to step into her life and show the viewers what life as a frisbee player is all about. This film is meant to show that women can have just as much love for a sport as a man. We wanted to touch the audience in a sense of giving back and to remind those that passion, dedication and hard work knows no gender or other human characteristics, if you give enough of yourself to something that you care about, it will show. On another note, Imani also wanted to give back to the sport that she loves by showing how she got into ultimate frisbee the way that she did. For every building, there’s always a ground that it’s placed on first. In the movie , she shows and talks about how she grew into the of the most powerful frisbee players in the field. As well as the magazines and photo shots she’s been featured in. This film is perfect for the people that don’t fully understand the ultimate life. We are convinced that, if used the right way, can change people’s views about the whole frisbee sport forever. We are convinced that viewers can be inspired and show that they can be more than they are by giving themselves that little push they need.
Since there is just a couple more footage that we want to get, we created a trailer to show just the slight preview of what is come in the movie. We do have intentions to record the final last touches at states. Here is the link:

Audrey Pham's Senior Capstone: SLA Dear Me Project

Posted by Audrey Pham in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 10:48 pm

Abstract:

The Dear Me Project at Science Leadership Academy is a letter that graduating seniors or teachers, would write to themselves. This letter consists advices, anything they'd say to their younger selves, positive reminders or encouragement. This project is about self-reflecting and being able to let the younger/future students of SLA feel more understood about their life at the moment. At some point in every teenager's years of high school, they will going through internal/external conflicts. This blog publishes letters from the seniors who will be graduating. I was inspired by doing this when 2-3 months ago, I was on Youtube and I saw #DearMe videos by famous Youtube celebrities. This was similar to my capstone but instead their letters to their younger selves were said in video form instead of actual written letter forms. I completely dropped my original plan of my capstone and started this project instead. This connects in our community because I believe that when I graduate, another student of SLA can be in charge of this blog and continue to keep it going. I made a very simple google form and shared links on my social media and I also sent/emailed it to seniors of my grade and a few teachers. May these letters bring you motivation, positive energy, good advice and self-reflection.

Bibliography:

"#DearMe Opening up + Advice to My Younger Self." YouTube. AprilAthena7, n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because this is the first thing that inspired me to do this capstone. I have watched AprilAthena7 because I like her beauty advices and I love watching her vlogs. I stumbled upon this as one of her new videos and I was instantly inspired by the concept of the hashtag Dear Me.

"#DearMe: Don't Be Afraid Of Being Different." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because this is another one very popular videos when you search up #DearMe on Youtube’s search bar. Her video is also very inspiring and I think people leave with something when they finish listening to her advices.

"#DearMe: YouTube's New Campaign Empowers Young Women." NY Daily News. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because it is an article that sums up what the #DearMe campaign on Youtube is all about. It just generalizes why it is important and the popular Dear Me Videos that people can view to get the feel of this campaign and maybe become inspired by it.

"Naikan: The Importance of Self-reflection." -- The ToDo Institute. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because I was researching why self reflection is important for everyone and I just found this article very interesting and it was one of the top articles that popped up when I searched on Google.

"Advice to My Younger Self." Huffingtonpost.com. N.p., n.d. Web.

This source helps me because it leads me to other sources about any article on Huffington that relates/tags to advice to my younger self. This helped me a lot because it lead me onto reading many other articles that I can use as resources.

"Famous Women Give Advice to Their Younger Selves, and It's Beautiful."RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because it is another article that sums up about the Dear Me campaign.

"#DearMe - What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self?" YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because it’s a Youtube Spotlight video and it has a bunch of clips from popular #DearMe Videos on youtube.

"YouTube Dear Me Campaign Empowering Girls." YouTube Dear Me Campaign Empowering Girls. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because it’s an article about how the Youtube #DearMe campaign’s main audience is young women.

"Seattle Seniors Take Part in 'Dear Me' Campaign - Seattle." Seattle. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because it is about how a group of seniors in Seattle recreated this campaign in their community just like how I am doing this at SLA.

"YouTube #DearMe Campaign Reaches Out To Young Women For International Women's Day." Tech Times RSS. N.p., 07 Mar. 2015. Web. 22 May 2015.

This source helps me because it informed me about how Dear Me campaign started off for International Women’s Day.

Bundy, Kenyatta; Senior Capstone

Posted by Kenyatta Bundy in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 5:32 pm

For Senior year, we are required to complete a “Capstone”; a large project that is completely decided by you, and is the medium of your choice. For my Capstone, my partner Alhaji Koita and I, decided to go with an art piece that would live on SLA walls for as long as SLA remains in it’s current building. With that said though, we wanted it to have purpose, and represent the school and our entire community in some way. So after a lot of road blocks, speed bumps and detours, we finally decided to paint a “Periodic Table of SLA”. The concept was simple; paint a large periodic table, but instead of having it contain the elements, we would replace the letters with different students/teacher’s initials, and replace the element name with 1 word that describes SLA from those corresponding people. Because the project is so large, and we did not use our time in a way that is ideal, we’re not actually completely finished our project yet. With that said though, it will be completely finished within the next week, and it will be completely amazing. This entire process taught me a lot, from time management, to color schemes and making sure that we chose colors that matched and went well together, to even the simple act of painting and learning different painting techniques. With the piece 75% complete, we have already received nothing but positive feedback and we couldn’t be happier with how it’s turning out. I’d personally like to thank my capstone mentor, Ms. Giknis for supporting us every step of the way, as well as every single person who either gave me permission to put them on the wall, or aided in the process of us completing this piece. And most importantly, I’d like to thank Mr. Lehmann for founding a school that couldn’t even be summed up with 90 different adjectives.

Bibliography

"10 Sure-Fire School Fundraisers." Scholastic.com. Scholastic, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.scholastic.com/parents/resources/article/volunteering-fundraising/10-sure-fire-school-fundraisers>.

From the start, I knew that this would be a very good source for me when it came to it’s reliability and overall content. This is due to the fact that this was a Scholastic article directed towards teachers and administrators all over the nation. This source specifically focuses on fundraising within schools and provides 10 solid ideas for fundraisers that are both inexpensive and interesting. This source will help me by giving me a few fresh new ideas for fundraising that has not been done in SLA already. The only problem with this source is the fact that it’s really directed towards high school’s and is more appropriate for Elementary and Middle School.

"100 Fundraising Ideas." 100 Fundraising Ideas. Juniata College, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://services.juniata.edu/osa/100FundraisingIdeas.html>.

This source was another one that focuses on fundraising, but it’s a better one than the previous one due to the fact that it shows me 100 sources and not only that, it is specifically directed towards the college environment. Although SLA isn’t a college, this does give me fundraising ideas that are geared much more to my age group rather than students who are younger. This source also is highly reliable due to the fact that it was put out by Juniata, for their specific campus and students. This means that I will be able to trust that these are ideas that have worked in the past and could potentially work for me. With that said though, not all of the ideas relate directly towards me due to the simple fact that it is Juniata specific and refers to things that have nothing to do with the high school environment.

Dart, D. C. "How To Build A Custom Sized Stretched Canvas." Instructables.com. Autodesk, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Build-A-Custom-Sized-Stretched-Canvas/>.

At first glance I did not think that this would be a very reliable source due to the fact that it was basically a blog post, which meant that anyone could have created this post without any real knowledge of what they were doing. But after I really sat down and read the instructions and the description of the author, I knew that this would be a good place for me to get the basic background knowledge that I needed in order to figure out how to build a frame for a canvas like the one I will be using for my art piece. I will still need to look at other sources that discuss how to build a frame for a canvas but this will definitely be a good place to start.

Eckman, Megan. "How to Use a Grid to Enlarge an Image While Drawing - Tuts+ Design & Illustration Tutorial." Design & Illustration Tuts+. Envato, 22 Apr. 2014. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-use-a-grid-to-enlarge-an-image-while-drawing--cms-20593>.

One big part of creating a large artistic piece is the process of going from a simple drawing on printer paper, to a full scale art piece. In order to do this accurately, I would need to use a grid method so that I know that all of the proportions are accurate and that it will look exactly like my original drawing. I also believe that this is a very good source to use when it comes to creating an art piece due to the fact that it has all the makings of a reliable piece and was done by an artist who knows what she’s talking about due to the fact that she teaches people how to be artists in her everyday life.

"How To Finish Up Your Colored Pencil Project." Onlinepaintingstudiocom. N.p., 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://onlinepaintingstudio.com/colored-pencil-paintingtutorials/colored-pencil-tutorial-series-finishing-up-your-project/>.

This source was very important for me because I have never made a piece of art that was going to be hung up for the public. Due to the fact that I will be hanging this up for everyone in SLA to see, I will need to ensure that my piece looks professional. A big part of that is what exactly I am supposed to do with my project once I am done. That’s where this source comes into play. This article gives me a detailed explanation of what it is that I should do with my piece once I am ready to finish it. From the protection, to the framing, to the varnish, this source covers it all and does so in an easy to understand way. I also know that this is a reliable source since it is ran and written by a very accomplished artist who has been doing work since before I was even born.

Kyer, Libby. "Colored Pencil Painting." No Really, That's How I Do It. American Society of Botanical Artists, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.asba-art.org/article/no-really-thats-how-i-do-it-colored-pencil-painting>.

I know that I mentioned that my last source was very important but this is probably the most important source of all my sources. This is due to the fact that I will be working solely with colored pencils for this piece and it is very important that I am very aware of all the techniques that I can utilize while I work on this in order to create the best painting that I can. Also I know that this is probably my most reliable source when it comes to the artistic techniques due to the fact that this is the American Society of Botanical Artists’ website which lets me know that all of these techniques will have been very much tried and tested.

McArdle, Thaneeya. "Best Surface for Colored Pencil and Acrylic Mixed Media Art." Best Surface for Colored Pencil and Acrylic Mixed Media Art. N.p., 2015. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.art-is-fun.com/best-surface-for-colored-pencil-and-acrylic-mixed-media-art.html>.

I’m not really sure exactly how reliable this source is due to the fact that it is basically a blog, but I believe that the information on the site is accurate since it lines up with everything else that I have been reading. This source focuses on the best surfaces (papers) to work on when one is using colored pencils. This is important for me because of the fact that I am not very well versed with colored pencil painting, which means that I have no clue of what kind of paper I should really be using for my piece. After reading this though, I now have a basic knowledge of the papers that should be used when colored pencil is the chosen medium.

McNee, Lori. "Using Colored Pencils to Create Fine Art." The Art of and Fine Art Tips of Lori McNee. N.p., 3 Feb. 2010. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.finearttips.com/2010/02/using-colored-pencil-to-create-fine-art/>.

This source is very good for me when it comes to it’s artistic techniques due to the fact that it allows me to really get a deeper grasp on exactly what I should be doing when I use colored pencils to create a large, professional piece of art. Since this source is written and ran by the same person, and this person happens to be a very successful artist, I know that I can look at this source as a very reliable one. This will come in handy throughout the entire process due to the fact that it will allow for me to have a place to go back to when I want to do something with colored pencils that I don’t fully know how to do.

Pemberton, Lo. "Mounting and Framing Your Pencil Portrait." Web log post. How to Draw... N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://howtodraw.pencilportraitsbyloupemberton.co.uk/step-by-step-drawing-6-to-10/mounting-framing-pencil-portrait/>.

This is the source that I needed in order to confirm what I learned in one of my previous sources when it came to framing a piece. This source does an amazing job of breaking down every little detail about the type of frame I should use, how I should frame it, the size the frame should be; everything. This source does reiterate what I learned from my other source when it comes to framing my piece but it also goes more in depth than my other one did. I also know that this source is reliable due to the fact that it was written by a well versed artist and is on a very popular art blog by the name of “how to draw”.

Truman, Vicki. "Surfaces for Colored Pencil Painting." Onlinepaintingstudiocom. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://onlinepaintingstudio.com/colored-pencil-paintingtutorials/surfaces-for-colored-pencil-painting/>.

This final source gives me some basic knowledge about exactly what surfaces I should use while using colored pencils. I knew that I needed to find another source that covered this topic because I wasn’t exactly sure how reliable my other source that covered this topic was. This is also the same website that I used for one of my other sources, so I already know that this is a site that I would consider reliable. This will really help me out in the beginning stages of my creation due to the fact that I will know exactly what paper I should be using in order to show off the positive qualities of the colored pencils that I will be using.

Aaron Tang's Capstone

Posted by Aaron Tang in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 1:29 pm

The purpose of this capstone was to improve on my photography skills by taking pictures of students at Science Leadership Academy. Since the school does not have any memories of students, I did a handful of photo shoots. A small section of the wall has pictures of scenarios which are located by the door on the far right.  After each session of taking pictures of my clients, I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 for enhancing the quality of each of the photos I selected. Students that signed up for my photography project, each of them were asked to print their pictures.

The past few months was hectic because I was in a tight budget; I decided to  collaborate with a senior, My Truong, so we could work together. We decided to fundraise. The process in creating an art gallery was a lot of work for one person so we combined our work to have a master piece. At the end, we had enough money to buy  our supplies; frames, strings, paint, printed pictures and many more. We wanted to be more creative. We decided to have a string on top of the ceiling to hang frames and pictures. We noticed that we can transform part of the school into a place where visitors, students, families of SLA and teachers to look at the diversity of SLA, therefore people can have their own interpretation of the photos. Luckily, we have an amazing photographer that does portraits and we printed some of her portraits she took. We credited to the students that volunteered our station and it is located on the black ribbon.

After graduating this school, I really want the future graduates to add more pictures. My capstone is a first step to show new photographers to display their work in a meaningful and creative way.

My Truong- Capstone

Posted by My Truong in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 12:10 pm

Throughout the year I attempted to developed my own photography style. My goal was to create a photography book. However, toward the end of the year I realized I wanted to create something that can be displayed for the whole school to see. Aaron and I ended up working together to create our SLA Pictures in Time wall. We started to take pictures of student in and outside school. We held a photoshoot for anyone who like get their picture professional done. We want to create a wall of memories of SLA over times so that if incoming freshman can see what had happen in the pass. At SLA we have a  lot of visitor the visitors, so they will be  able to look at our wall and have an idea of what kind of work we do at our school. We create this wall in a large space so that over time upcoming senior who want to take over our capstone and continue to add pictures on the wall.

"How to Use a DSLR Camera: Learn DSLR Camera Basics Shutter Aperture ISO." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

How to use DSLR camera?

Using DSLR camera can be really confusing for beginners. Without knowing the technique it’s hard to get the right outcome that I wanted it to come out. So I have been looking up a lot of Youtube tutorials to get a better understanding on how to work with a DSLR camera. I learn that there are 2 important features that I need to work in order to get good pictures. Shutter speed and aperture. Shutter speed controls action, so when working with moving objects it’s best to change the shutter speed. Aperture control how much light can get through the camera. The higher the aperture it the less light there will be and the lower aperture is, the more light there will be.

Digital Photography for Dummies (Books)

For a better understanding, I used a book to understand Digital Photography. In this book, they talk a lot about, when to use a certain settings in the camera. It also show how to organize pictures and give me tips on how to edit pictures and keeping them so I will be able to access it easier. They also give me a lot of details on Photoshop that I can practice along with my photoshop program that I have on my computer.

"How to Compose Your Photo Using the Rule of Thirds." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

Rules of third

I learned this technique in photography but I don't fully understand it. Using this rules of third tutorial, shows me that all picture doesn't look great in the center. The rule of third is when imaging the 3 by 3 grid and taking the picture at the intercept point. They apply the rule of third because at those 4 corner it catches the viewer's eye the most.

"Street Photography Do's and Don'ts." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

Street photography

Part of my project is taking pictures in different genders. Street photography is one of the many pictures that I will be taking. This video show me what should I do and not do when taken street photography. I can use most of this technique in term of landscape photography. This video tells me I should always have my camera ready to shoot because street photography is all about the moment. It will be a waste of time if during the photoshoot time, was spent to set up the camera instead.

"Natural Light Portraiture - Get A Little Known Secret!" YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

Portrait photography

If the model doesn't already know their best angle of their portrait it’s alway best to start out by taking a few pictures to see which angle look best for them. This is one of the tips I found really helpful in the video because sometimes when I do portrait pictures, I didn't know why some picture are better than other. Since I’m the photographer and the model I work,  normally doesn't have experience being a model and I need to position them. Talk to the model, tell them what to do and keep them engrade are very important.

"Picture Perfect Day." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

Pictures days

Taking portrait pictures as the model makes a big impact for the outcome of the picture. Make-up that the model wear has a lot to do with the quality of the picture. Make up that had sunscreen make the model face shiny when the flash is on. I research a little of what should the model do and how to get ready for picture day. Depend on what kind of portrait, studio or outside model should use proper make up so that it does not create trouble for the photographer. It’s alway better for the model to know their angle, and what look best for them before doing the photoshoot.

"14 Photography Project Ideas - Click It Up a Notch." Click It Up a Notch. N.p., 27 Dec. 2013. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

Project idea

When I first started my capstone I didn't know what my project will be like, all I know is I want it to be involved with photography. I did a lot of research and I find this website helpful to me. I use many of their ideas to create my own project that I can work with all year long. Instead of the 52 projects, I decide to do the 25 instead because that’s a perfect time line for me to do a photoshoot every week. I also leave a couple month extra so I can work on my final presentation which is creating the books.

"50 Essential Photography Tips - CNET." CNET. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

Tips for photography

This website shows a lot of techniques that I can use when working with camera, lens, and how to program the camera. I think it’s really helpful to learn. I learn to use the graph on the camera to read the quality of the pictures. Most of the time when I come back during the photoshoot and try to review the pictures to make sure they look okay. It turn out that the picture on the camera screen doesn't look as nice as the one on the computer. The best way to tell if the quality of the pictures are great or not is to look at the graph. Most important thing is not to delete any pictures during the photoshoot because those picture might turn out really good if is on the computer screen

"Photo Books, Photo Albums, Create a Photo Book, Personalized Photo Album | Shutterfly." Shutterfly. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

making photography books

Since my final product presentation is to make an photography book, I did a little research and overview of how to make books and the cost. It turns out the book is not that expensive as I thought it might be. I still need a little more research but shutterfly is one of the best sources I find so far.

"Best Fundraising Ideas In America." Easy Fundraising Ideas for Schools, Churches, Sports and Non Profits. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2015.

Fundraising idea

Creating books, making websites, framing, and printing out pictures can cost a lot of money. I did a lot of resource on how to fundraise and I can make the best out of it. I will start doing fundraise during February. I think selling candy and snack is one of the best way to make the most money out of it. So I plan to sell candy during school (not lunch time because other people will do bake sale). Since this is a long term thing I decide to do, it when other people are not having any fundraise. I also research different websites that did sponsor that can be very helpful.

Crystalle Hutchins Capstone

Posted by Crystalle Hutchins in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 11:52 am

The idea for this senior project first sprouted when I was junior at SLA. Having three easily accessible sources of raw ingredients or pre made foods within the vicinity of the high school made me realize how our students’, and even sometimes faculties’, consumption of their products was taking a substantial toll on our environment, with something typically seen as trivial - non reusable bags. Every time we buy from these establishments and our purchases are stored in plastic bags, we are verifying its inevitable fate of finding its home in a landfill, where it will not decompose for 20 to 1000 years (ABC Australia). I did not want to help in the continuance in creating an unavoidable horrendous reality for my great great grandchildren. Large scale reusable bags are now sold at some supermarkets for large groceries, but I knew this was not practical or appealing to the average high schooler. So for my capstone, I constructed the blueprint for making reusable, desirable to everyone, regardless of age. After a few meetings with my mentor, who also is my grandmother, seamstress extraordinaire, we decided on the best design for my product. Prototypes were made and given to two testers, who then gave me back honest criticisms on how to improve my products. I found that although accessible and easy to carry, my product could be slightly larger to accommodate for various items, like dance shoes for the dedicated teen ballerina. I am going to major in Entrepreneurship in college and this project was a great stepping stone in my higher learning and future endeavors.

Annotated Bibliography

"EPA." Reducing and Reusing Basics. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www2.epa.gov/recycle/reducing-and-reusing-basics>.

This webpage on the site of the United States Environmental Protection Agency lists the basics of reducing, reusing, and recycling. It also provides ideas on alternatives or life changes to become a more environmentally friendly citizen. This list includes looking for products with less packaging, what would seem to be an obvious method but I had personally not considered, and maintaining and repairing products, so they do not have to be replaced as frequently. I want my project to focus not just reducing the need for plastic bags, but educating people to reduce how much they intake altogether.

"Recycle." Sustainability Recycle Comments. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.bu.edu/sustainability/campus-resources/reduce-reuse-recycle/>.

Boston University Sustainability webpage tells of the effects of not recycling in comparison to the benefits of recycling. One selling point was that it does not just help the planet, but also your pockets. This is by reusing items you already have instead of purchasing new ones. The basis of my project is to sell something that can have multiple uses in of obtaining new bags. Some establishments even require their customers to purchase bags, as a motive for their customers to take heed to reusable bags. This is an excellent tactic for a vendor like myself.

"Recycle Now Philadelphia - Recycle, Go Green." Recycle Now Philadelphia. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.recyclenowphiladelphia.org/>.

Recycle Now Philadelphia’ s home page is dedicated to showing how recycling has positively affected various areas of society in order to convince Philadelphians to make environmental changes. It speaks on how multiple schools have turned to Cenergistic to lessen energy costs. The website also details how an iconic landmark became energy efficient through LED lights, window refurbishment, etc. This is a great tactic for the purpose of getting more people to be energy efficient. I will consider using a similar method with my project.

The language is important because there always needs to be persuasive coding when trying convince hesitant audiences. One the trends mentioned was the use of car sharing in certain cities. Renting a car is much more affordable and reasonable for some people. That is a great way to sell my product- make it known that it is an affordable and reasonable simple alternative.

This is an environmental self study done by the Green Planning Committee at the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science. It talks about the recent efforts the school’s campus to rebirth its environmentally friendly, which began in 1991. This campus recycles white paper, cardboard, aluminum, and yard waste. Then it details how this recycling is in effect- through providing appropriate bins for recycling, making it easy for students to make a positive environmental change. The ultimate objective of an campaign is to make the desired decision as effortless and obvious for the subjects. I will remember when completing my project.

This source will be benefit me immensely because it a paper done by a student for a capstone project on sustainability in Philadelphia. It gives background on recycling in this city such as Philadelphia being the first city to introduce residential curbside. It touches on the downfalls of Philadelphian recycling like its ill progress with increasing the waste prevent rate as other major cities have. The purpose of the paper is to analyze what is keeping Philadelphia from being a more energy efficient. This will useful to me completing my project.

This webpage includes 25 easily understandable reasons for why switching to reusable bags is a smart choice. Pocket friendly incentive like some stores may offer discounts for customers that use reusable bags caters to the desires of the  average money crazed American. It also reveals unknown benefits, such as one less grocery bag per person would save New York City 250,000 in disposal costs.

This is made specifically to cater to the Los Angeles County audience. As well as acknowledging the hazardous effects the use of plastic bags on human, it reveals the repercussions that are faced by marine animals because of these unsafe items. This is a tactic of pinpointing the concerns of a specific areas in order for getting people to be more uneasy and heedful to a problem. This is a strategy I will use by presenting facts specific to the Philadelphia population.

Philadelphia’s Waste Management made this video with the purpose of advertising its consideration of the longevity of Earth while in this essential system. They want to triple the amount of recyclable materials to 20 million tons of recyclables. The most important part of this video is the testimonial. a employee of waste management states, “The more people know about what we do, the better.” Having actual people support your cause is always a great persuasive tool.

Jones, Bryanna Capstone

Posted by Bryanna Jones in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 11:07 am

Dancing will always will be my first love. I have yet to understand what exactly it is I love so much about the art form, so for my capstone I made it a part of my quest to find out.

During the second semester of my sophomore year Mr. Block introduced his English class to the world of site specific dance and a prominent site specific dancer/choreographer Leah Stein. At first I was a bit skeptical because I’ve only known dance as the art form that is performed on a stage, in a sequestered space, to a paying audience. Site specific dance was performance dance’s fraternal twin: However, site specific dance is done in unconventional dance spaces and has an audience that can range from a stock broker to a homeless individual who happens to be sitting near the site. After the brief introduction we were able to delve in to the style ourselves and explore the genre more. I quickly fell in love and wanted to learn more.

When September rolled around I had no idea what I wanted to as a capstone. I wanted to do two things : dance and perform. After brain storming with Mr. Block he re-introduced me to Leah Stein. Within months she became my mentor. Throughout this year, while I was creating my capstone, she was preparing her company for an extravagant performance they are having at the Water Works in June. So through out the year I was able to sit in on her practices, take notes, ask questions, and sometimes learn a little choreography. After I garnered enough data I’d take the things I learned back to my dancers.

In the beginning I spent most of my time trying to figure out what I wanted to do, what story did I want to tell. I decided that I wanted to talk about the affects of budget cuts and how active students have been in fighting for our schools. It was sort of an artistic protest. Which is why I entitled it Student Faces in Public Places. Once I had that sorted out I began holding rehearsals every Wednesday for 3 hours. Rehearsals consisted of a lot of adding, cutting, and adjusting since everyones skill-sets were different. I didn’t want to choreograph complicated movements, instead I wanted to add another layer, poetry. This way the audience had a visual and audio.

At some point in my life I fell in love with this art form with out knowing. In the end I’ve found that I love dance because it’s cathartic and thrilling. It not only delights the dancer but onlookers too, which is another reason why art is is so amazing. It leaves everyone feeling bit better than when they arrived.

Here is a link to process video for my capstone and a few photos from the performance.

Goldsworthy, Andy. Andy Goldsworthy: A Collaboration with Nature. New York: H.N. Abrams, 1990. Print.

What’s interesting about Andy Goldsworthy’s book is that he is a site specific artist. He creates art from material in the environment because he is interested in “movement, change, light, growth and decay.” Although he is referring to art these can also refer to dance. He believes that his work is inseparable from the earth, which is similar to site specific dance. He also reads his spaces like choreographers, to see if they are conducive to creating art and allowing the art to thrive. Like site art the choreography in site dancing wants to rely a message to the audience that is specific to the space.

Kloetzel, Melanie, and Carolyn Pavlik, eds. Site Dance. Gainesville: U of Florida, n.d. Print.

When Mr. Block first recommended this book he did it with the intention of having me read Leah Steins chapter. Little did I know this book would be a gem. In the introduction the author describes site choreography as a “performative translation of a place that heightens our awareness of our surrounding.” Artist go into communities/spaces such as schools, offices, apartments, neighborhoods, and parks and “read” the environment. The artist analyze the space “physically, sensually, intellectually, and emotionally.” With this research and analysis the author is able to choreograph work that is pertinent to the contextual environment. Site artist take the most obvious spaces and force us to take a close look at them. Site choreographers purpose is to forge a relationship between “people and place.”

Kwon, Miwon. One Place after Another: Site-specific Art and Locational Identity. Cambridge, MA: MIT, 2002. Print.

https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=s8KviDnz1SwC&oi=fnd&pg=PP6&dq=site+specific+art&ots=F4luU0Qkrk&sig=u8RvnLsbex_U_VVLXINVTaC8MIA#v=onepage&q&f=false

Dance is an art form. Site specific art refers to art that is obstinate in presence, but ephemeral in tangibility. Unlike auditorium performances site specific art uses location as a part of the performance, not just a venue. On site locations give the performance more depth: texture, real life sounds, color, scale and nature. “Site specific art whether it’s interruptive or assimilative, gave itself up to it environmental context, being formally determined or directed by it.” Sites specific art is created from its contextual environment. Therefore the art must be destroyed by the contextual environment. The most beautiful part about site specific art is no one will ever run out of exhibit spaces.

"SLA/Leah Stein Dance Company Collaboration 2012." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuW_V3NvxmE>.

Since I’ve worked with the Leah Stein Dance Company in the past and will be working alongside her team for my capstone; I thought I’d use a source where she explained her passion for site specific dance and her purpose for doing a SLA dance residency. She describes the work she does as “movement based.” Her goal with creating this residency was to introduce the students to the creative process of site specific dance and perform at the end. Her style of performance is different from those of normal performances that happen on stage. She performs in public or unconventional performance space to engage the audience differently as well as the performers. Before the students are able to create their own performances Leah and members of her company teach the students the basics of interpreting a space through movement and sound. Once the students have these basics down pat they are able to choose a location within given limits to create a performance.

"Rivers and Tides." YouTube. YouTube, 10 Dec. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQiHfgFnY_A&noredirect=1>.

For Andy Goldsworthy art is a form of nourishment. He expresses his need for the land because of the similar energies he feels in the land and within himself. The idea that this growth and time will only last for a duration of time inspires many of his pieces. His art makes a temporary mark on time. When he flies to new sites he does not waste a second on research or resting because time will continue to move on with or without his readiness. He prefers to manipulate piece nature with inherent care and creativeness. Especially part of nature we tend to over look like leaves and icicles. “Total control can be the death of work,” is a quote he uses to describe the uncertainty he felt when he began to create art outside of his university.

Lerman, Liz. Hiking the Horizontal: Field Notes from a Choreographer. Middletown, CT: Wesleyan UP, 2011. Print.

I had a meeting with Leah today and she gave me a list of great resources! The following source was perfect for figuring out the space that I am. The book follows the creative process of a site-specific performing, from questioning the performance to the final product. Lerman’s first chapter is called Fueling the Imagination, in this she talks about her visit with a Nobel Laureate. She ask him “how do you ask yourself a question.” He responds, “I am fueled by my ignorance.” She thought that his simple answer was not only profound, but also described her artistic process. This question to self leads to asking people other questions, even with the fear of asking them. Since we define smartness by the precisions of someones answer, instead of the steps they took to find an answer. Throughout my process my questions may seem silly, but i have to remember that it is apart of learning.

Borrow, Jonathan. "Subject / Inspiration / Stealing / Familiar Movements / Choreography / Referencing Others Self Expression." A Choreographer's Handbook. Abingdon:. Abingdon: Routledge, 2010. 30-36. Print.

Leah also recommended A Choreographer’s Handbook. In a chapter in this book I focused on the chapter called Subject / Inspiration / Stealing / Familiar Movements / Choreography / Referencing Others Self Expression. Jonathan Borrows talks about having an idea and treating it as such. For example, Thinking that someone with do fouettes throughout the performance is a cool idea, but does it work? How does it fit with the space? Sense this is site dance what does this movement mean? In order to create a great piece I must put in the work and utilize my space. It almost seems that he is alluding to procrastination.

Black Performance Theory. Durham: Duke UP, 2014. Print.

I am equally interested in site dance as I am in Black performance theory. Since I am using all Black dancers I thought this would be a great idea to add an elements of Black performance. Black peformance is an art form that translates the black experience in America. It’s political and therefore controversial. This theory “gives distinct attention to” the beauty of black bodies. Movement that is created to accent the bodies of black people and the struggles they have been through. Black performance theory does not only pertain to dance, but also art, poetry, prose, music, fashion design, etc.

Bloom, Lynne A. The Intimate Act of Choreography. Pittsburgh: U of Pittsburgh, n.d. Print.

This source focuses on the art of actively creating choreography. Since choreography is an action it can only be planned and carried out by doing it. Similar to my Subject / Inspiration / Stealing / Familiar Movements / Choreography / Referencing Others Self Expression annotation, since I am creating site specific dance I need to make sure I am well acquainted with my spaces. Therefore I can create choreography that is specific to where I am working. In order for the performance to be effective it needs a theme. Specifically a theme that can be easily conveyed. So far my theme is going to be education in SLA.

Olsen, Andrea. The Place of Dance: A Somatic Guide to Dancing and Dance Making. Connecticut: Wesleyan UP, 2014. Print.

This book speaks about dance as a universal language, making it one of the best art forms. It makes communication between cultures easier and enjoyable. As humans we belong to each other and more importantly we are belong to the Earth. Since we have evolved with the world, naturally we have learned movements that are a part of our environment. Therefore, as a choreographer I am not creating movement I am mimicking the world's natural movements. This also stems from the theory that we are all natural born dancers. Dance is movement and movement is dancing. As a choreographer I must tap into the human body's natural movements to make my theme easily conveyable on a universal scale.

Abstract:

My senior capstone was a basketball youth clinic. I had many ideas flying through my head regarding what I wanted my capstone to be, but I knew I wanted it to be something I spent my whole life doing. I never had many opportunities to go out to different basketball clinics, so I decided that I wanted to give inner city kids an opportunity to do so. My goal was to bring the youth together to develop their basketball, leadership and social skills. I wanted to give the youth an opportunity to learn and increase their knowledge of the fundamentals of basketball. My purpose was to give back to the youth by doing a project that I would enjoy and also love doing. I thought it was a good idea to create a basketball clinic for free because it would bring the community together for a fun day of physical and sporting activity. At first, it was difficult trying to find a gym and coming up with different ways to promote the event. It was also challenging because I had no prior knowledge of how to run a basketball clinic. I researched many basketball clinics that have been previously held in the Philadelphia area. With that, I was able to put together several ideas that would make the clinic effective and enjoyable for all who were involved. I knew I had to make the activities very flexible and exciting so the kids could learn the different fundamentals of basketball. Overall, my capstone increased my leadership qualities and taught me how to take advantage of any and every opportunity that is given to me because there could never be a next time.
