Often in my city, especially around my old house in North Philly, all I see is ugly. Trash is thrown everywhere, creeping weeds gnarled and thrusting themselves out of the concrete, and there is no sign of life. It made me sad to see only grey colors and brown colors and sometimes weird bright colors if the houses were painted differently. But lots of times I would see a sea of sadness and a lot of bored people with lost hope and nothing to do. People in urban areas do not get as much opportunities (and lots of them don’t have the means) to access land to help them self sustain themselves when it comes to produce and lots of times people don’t even know where to start. That is why I made my website. For all beginners who would like to bring a little more life and growth into their lives. A little more green and a little less grey. I feel like there could be so many benefits to growing plants, to start off, my website is featuring growing herbs and vegetables. Growing things like that ,especially if they’re perennials (plants that produce things every year) can benefit in so many ways. It’s not expensive, people can learn to be self reliant, and the education they will receive by growing their own plants is a reward all on its own. I even asked Dunda to use it as a source for her class. I’m very proud of my benchmark and the work I put in to it and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

  1. Katie. "10 Great Uses for Basil Leaf Herb." Wellness Mama. Katie-Wellness Mama, 14 July 2012. Web. 28 Jan. 2015.

http://wellnessmama.com/5505/uses-for-basil-leaf/

I chose this website as one of my sources because of it’s information not only on the usual uses for basil but the medicinal uses as well. Basil was the first herb on my list. Wellness Mama is also a normal mother with kids, this is a blog. And she helps relate to the common people which is what I am trying to do with my site as well. I found a couple of ways basil can be helpful which some even surprised me as well. This is important because I want people to see all the uses for basil. I’m not a doctor but I do believe that plants do help with aiding wounds or sicknesses.

2) "A-Z Herb List." A-Z Herb List. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015.

http://www.herbwisdom.com/herblist.html

I chose this website to help me make the layout of my herbs from A to Z. I needed to format my herbs in order so that it would look better and that I can sort and organize my directions and recipes accordingly. A lot of my herbs will probably be organized according to this website and how I manage it will probably be according to this website. I just want as many names in alphabetical order as I can possibly get. I’m hoping to get other information out of this as well as a list of produce that people can grow at home.

3) "How to Grow Basil." WikiHow. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015.

http://www.wikihow.com/Grow-Basil

Even though I do like plants, I won’t say I know everything about them. I know how to grow Basil but I’m not entirely sure on how to go about picking the leaves or harvesting them and this website helps a lot. Wiki how is a website where people post tutorials about how to do different things. Ranging from nails to how to commit suicide which is not okay but I guess it helps anyone who needs it. Wiki how has actually helps me through a lot of situations in my life and I felt like this tutorial was easy and simplified to the fullest and that’s why I used this source.

4) "Basil." Gourmet Garden. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015.

http://www.gourmetgarden.com/en/herb/188/basil

I got this for the image. Gourmet Garden is a website that focuses on show casing their herbs a lot. They also have different recipes for their different herbs and they also have a store to showcase their products. They are famous for having their ready to use herbs which is herbs that you want ground up in a tube with some liquid to keep it fresh I supposed. They have ranges of herbs like chives, cilantro, basil, and more and can be found in stores like Wal-Mart, they also have a portfolio for different herbs which is pretty cool.

5) "Basil Pesto Recipe : Food Network Kitchen : Food Network." Basil Pesto Recipe : Food Network Kitchen : Food Network. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/basil-pesto-recipe2.html

I used this website to extract this recipe. Pesto is delicious and is one of the typical dishes that someone would use when it comes to basil. The FoodNetwork Channel is a channel that has transformed from helping people to cook, to a lot of competitions. There is nothing wrong with this but it does take the quality out of the channel. Thank God for the website. They also have magazines and different books published from them. They also have a range of chefs with different t.v shows, one of the famous t.v shows is called diners, drive-ins, and dives where Guy Fieri goes around and finds the best restaurants state to state.

6) Schrock, Denny. "Easy-to-Grow Herbs." Better Homes & Gardens. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

http://www.bhg.com/gardening/vegetable/herbs/easy-to-grow-herbs/

I used this link to help me find herbs that are easy to grow. The reason why I need herbs that are easy to grow is because the people that I am basing my audience on, even though I’m broadcasting it to everyone, I want to make sure that people who are just beginning have an easier time and a positive experience. It’s good to have easier subjects for people who want to start out. And in my opinion, herbs are the easiest thing to grow. You prune them to prolong “seeding” and then you keep pruning them as you need them and they grow fast. Good for anyone who wants a cute garden, or fresh herbs to cook with.

7) Rhoades, Heather. "How To Plant Chives – Growing Chives In Your Garden."Gardening Know How. N.p., 20 Aug. 2008. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/chives/growing-chives.htm

I chose this site for directions and for the picture. I grow chives myself and I can personally say that it was an easy and positive experience. I chose to include chives because they are easy to grow, sprouting in a week and not only are they easy, you can cut them as they grow. They replenish fast so it can save the grower money and a little seed produces a lot of plant. I also chose to include them in my project because they are flavorful and there are a lot of home-cooks who are interested in keeping a garden.

8) "Smoky Salmon Chive Spread Recipe | MyRecipes.com." MyRecipes.com. N.p., Nov. 2009. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/smoky-salmon-chive-spread

I chose this site because for every type of herb, vegetable, fruit, or even flower, I need a recipe for it. And I found this chive salmon dip and thought that it would be appropriate and cheap for the home cook/home grower to make. The herb would cost nothing if you grow it yourself, and the salmon is canned as well. Not only does it not cost a lot to make, the recipe actually gives you more servings than indicated so you actually get more for your buck than you think. This is why I chose this source, it was delicious and helpful.

9) "Dill Seeds Zesty Seasoning." Dill Seeds For Sale. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

http://www.edenbrothers.com/store/dill_seeds.html

I chose this website for the picture alone, not only foes it give me a picture for the seeds but it gives me some information as well. The edonbrothers sell seeds and plants in bulk and is good for anyone who wants to buy things in bulk. I will be mentioning this in interesting finds on my website. They sell flower seeds, wild flower seed mixes, vegetable seeds, herb seeds, heirloom seeds, organic seeds, and flower bulbs.I want to include this in my interesting finds for people who do not want to necessarily start everything form pure seed themselves.

10) "Diapers Help Your Plants Grow!" YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXb8rJ8Rm3I

This is probably my favorite source out of them all. This is called “Diapers Help Your Plants Grow” and it was uploaded by a youtuber who finds random projects to work on. In this certain situation, he uses a (new) diaper to help plants grow. He fills it up with water and then the takes out the stuffing and mixes it with the dirt. It makes potting soil light and fluffy and the reason for that is the cotton wadding gets wet and mixes up with crystals that can hold 500 times their weight in water. The reason why I decided to include this in interesting fines is because it’s environmentally friendly and produces good results in a weird way.

11) "How To Use Fresh Herbs." Www.cookinglight.com. N.p., n.d. Web.

http://www.cookinglight.com/cooking-101/essential-ingredients/all-about-herbs-slideshow

I wanted to use this source because I know that a lot of people want to grow herbs so that they have fresh herbs available in the kitchen. And they are great in containers as well! I know that herbs are the easiest to grow and a lot of people can have them ready and available, and they’re good for beginners!

12) "A Sampler of 12 Common Garden Herbs." Sunset. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Apr. 2015.

http://www.sunset.com/garden/flowers-plants/sampler-12-common-garden-herbs

I chose this site because it had a simple list of herbs that I can follow. Before I put any serious information in I really need to organize my website. I’m gathering about 10 parts for each categories in my website so I need about 10 herbs to start out with.

The first 12 sources were my initial sources to begin the website. The following sources are going to be for my herbs:

13) "Bonnie Plants - Garden Plants for Your Vegetable Garden or Herb Garden." Bonnie Plants. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://bonnieplants.com

I chose Bonnie Plants for a source because this website actually had a lot on the information for all the herbs I was going to feature on my website. Bonnie Plants is a national plant wholesaler. They sell plants and they also sell biodegradable pots. They have 70 green house locations around the country. They are dedicated to green gardening and sell products that are safe for the environment.

14) "Gardening Know How - Happy Gardening! Ask a Gardening Question, Get a Gardening Answer." Gardening Know How - Happy Gardening! Ask a Gardening Question, Get a Gardening Answer. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://www.gardeningknowhow.com

I chose gardening know how because I needed certain information on how to grow a couple of herbs and this is actually a very good source. This site is a great site for someone who is looking for straight to the point answers. It’s creator, Heather Rhoades noticed that there were not many friendly and easy to understand sites about gardening and at first there was not much activity but soon people came flocking with questions and many more articles were made.

15) "A Round Rock Garden." A Round Rock Garden. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

https://roundrockgarden.wordpress.com

I used this site for the purposes of learning how to harvest, in this case it was sage. This is a blog. The owner of this blog has a garden out in Austin, Texas and this was their first attempt at documenting organic gardening in an urban setting. They made their website to show self-reliance because now and days people tend to rely on the technology of modern agriculture. They are going back to the olden times of self reliance but are putting new twists on them. Check out their “About us” it’s pretty cool.

16) "Our Herb Garden." Our Herb Garden. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://www.ourherbgarden.com

I specifically used this website to learn how to grow and harvest thyme along with other herbs. This site got started initially with a culinary journey while the owners were also trying to grow an herb garden. Basically their about is how they chose to grow their garden to correlate with their culinary adventures.

17)"Learn How To Grow Your Own Herb Garden Indoors or Out!" Herb Gardens. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://herbgardening.com

I used this site to help me learn how to grow mint. This is a credible source because it has three sections whic are growing herbs in containers, growing herbs indoors, and growing herbs with hydroponics.

The next five sources are for my vegetables:

18)"Home - Harvest to Table." Harvest to Table RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://www.harvesttotable.com

Harvest to table is a website created for both the beginner and the veteran gardener. It was made to find easy solutions for a bunch of gardening problems and the site is very pretty. And clean cut so learning how to grow snow peas wasn’t that hard. The owner of this site is a man named Steve Albert. He’s very good to his crops and his goal is to make them better and better each year and tries not to use a lot of fossil based fertilizers.

19)"Off The Grid News Better Ideas For Off The Grid Living." Off The Grid News. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://www.offthegridnews.com

I chose offthegridnews as a source because they had an article teaching me about perennial onions which I didn’t even know existed. I thought they were all annuals. There isn’t too much in their about but I know living off the grid is like going completely natural and is actually a life style that I am willing to integrate part of it into my life. They have news, tips, tricks, and tutorials about living onthe land and living off the grid. I think perennials are good for living off the grid because they make new produce every year.

20)"WHFoods Site Search." WHFoods Site Search. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://www.whfoods.com/sitesearch.php

Okay so I used this site for all my veggies. This site is fantastic for finding nutritional value, uses for the vegetable, and it even gives a bunch of history for each vegetable that I chose to include in my website. WHF stands for the “World’s Healthiest Foods” and they even have their own book. It is one of the most visited websites for health information so it’s a great source to use. It is non-profit and owned by the George Mateljan foundation.

21)"Vegetable Garden - Plan Grow Harvest." Vegetable Garden - Plan Grow Harvest. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://www.vegetable-garden-guide.com

I used this website to help me learn how to grow carrots. There is no about page but basically it is this elderly man who grows everything and makes his own compost as well. He has kids, well, his own children that help him work on his garden. This is a credible source because I can see his results and I can see what he is working in. I can see everything he is doing so I can trust it.

22) "Menu." The SelfSufficient Living. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2015.

http://theselfsufficientliving.com

I chose this site just for some references. This site is about living simple and relying on your own home grown produce to get you through life. It’s about growing your own food, raising your own livestock, and avoiding “professional help” as much as possible. It’s about taking the natural things in life and appreciating it.

This is my bibliography with all my sources, it's not annotated (I annotated the most important ones): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kjrtS4sgFnEhwAZo9XN91wJ2e_G7D9--8VxIoVsucwQ/edit

Posted by Leah Petty in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 11:09 pm

For my capstone I went back to the middle school I attend, Middle Years Alternative (MYA), and taught their three seventh grade classes about the high school process. I wanted to do this project because I saw a real struggle in the school, I started to notice less kids from MYA getting into SLA. Then I learned that after the district started closing schools MYA was forced to take in those students, soon after this their principal retired along with many teachers. Also my younger sister is a current seventh grader at the school, and when I asked her what high school is thought she would like to attend when she graduates, she replied "I don't know" and said they really haven't talked about it much. After this I went to the school and talked to the new principal and asked if I could do my senior capstone project at the school, and it would be informing the students about the high school process. This would include getting them to know the different schools in Philadelphia, and letting them know the requirements, talking about college and how important it is to go to a school that best fits them for the future. I started out in March before they took their PSSA's, this would give them time to know how high they should be scoring in order to get into the schools they would like to go to. After the testing was done we started to talk about grade requirements and what their GPA's need to look like, and behavior grading too. I went into talking about clubs and sports teams also, what school are at the top. In the end I asked them how much they benefitted from this, all of them said that it was very helpful and learned something new that would help them choose a high school, and be more prepared.

Here are some pictures of my students and there top high school choices:

Bibliography:

"GreatPhillySchools - Home." GreatPhillySchools. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<http://greatphillyschools.org/>

Great Philly schools is website devoted to rating and reviewing schools in Philadelphia. These schools range from pre-k to High School. When using this website in my capstone I will be focusing on high schools. I would like to have the students I’m teaching research the schools they are thinking about applying to and see if it is a good fit for them. This could be based on the size of the school, location, average test scores,    sport teams, ect. The point of this is to let the students see if this is really is the school they want to. Let them do their own research on the schools they want to go to, and not just hearing about it.

"The School District of Philadelphia." US News. U.S.News & World Report, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/pennsylvania/districts/the-school-district-of-philadelphia>

This source comes from US News, under Education. This specific page is on the Philadelphia School District and has all the Philadelphia high schools and ranking, now many of the schools are not ranked. But one of the main reasons I’m using this page because it says rather or not the schools are nationally recognized. This is something you should take into account when picking a high school, because when it comes down to applying to college you want the college to know your school. I want to get across to the students that the decision of your high school falls right under college, the next big thing after this is start researching colleges to apply to.

"Inside Strawberry Mansion High School, Philadelphia, Pa Most Dangerous H S in America." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLiDFFvwkbQ>

This is a video titled “Inside Strawberry Mansion High School”, in this video World News goes inside Strawberry Mansion High School. The school has been labeled the most dangerous school in America. Diane Sawyer goes into the school and reports on the violence. I want to show the students that is not what you want to go though when you're in school, you don’t want to have to fight just to make it through the day. You want to know that you are in a safe learning environment. A school that is going to provide you things to better you for your future, the main thing they focus on in Strawberry Mansion is safety.

"Philadelphia's District and Charter High Schools: How Are They Doing?"Public School Notebook. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<http://thenotebook.org/fall-guide-2014/147620/philadelphias-district-and-charter-high-schools-how-are-they-doing>

The notebook is Philadelphia news paper that is dedicated to Philadelphia schools. This page talks about the top special admit schools and things you need to know before applying. Things like SAT scores, graduation rate, suspensions, total enrollment, ect. And since I the goal is to the students in the top schools in Philadelphia we want them to know these things before applying, and their parents to know. Especially because it goes into the percentage of low income students they have, because we don’t want a student feeling out of place because of the amount of money their parent have.

"Counselors Offer Advice on Applying." Public School Notebook. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<http://thenotebook.org/fall-guide-2010/102824/counselors-offer-advice-applying>

This page is also from the notebook, and this is advice from counselors around the city. Mostly from Elementary and Middle Schools, they talk about what is the best things to do when applying to schools. Also making sure you inform students about a schools before letting them apply, which is mainly my entire project. And it helps parents when you have more than one person saying the same thing. Because I’m still a kid in their eyes so I want to have some professionals to back me up.

"High School Profiles." School Profiles. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<http://thenotebook.org/schoolprofiles>

Once again this is from the Philadelphia Notebook. This is just a browser of all the high schools in the city, public and charter. Which I want to focus on, I don’t what parents or students to think in order to get a good education you have to pay, thats one thing I knew I didn’t want to talk about, private and catholic schools. So I want them the see the schools they have already heard about schools they have never heard of, and everything in between. I really want the parents to go though this too.

"Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School." Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015

<http://thenotebook.org/content/julia-r-masterman-laboratory-and-demonstration-school>

This agin is from the Philadelphia Notebook. This is just about Julia R. Masterman which at this moment in time is the top school in the state. I want them to see this because I want them to know you don’t have to go to this school to be the best. Also talk about how much stress the kids there go though and how hard it is. And touch on how they kick there kids out if they can’t maintain good grades, and how you don’t want that.

"School Selection Timeline." Public School Notebook. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<http://thenotebook.org/fall-guide-2014/147614/high-school-application-process-step-step>

This is a time line of how the application process goes when applying to high schools. This is for this year instead of next so will be modifying it. This is mainly for parents to know that to do when next yea comes. This will also be in whatever I choose to do rather it be a booklet or website. But this is very important thing to touch on for the parents so they have a head start next year.

"Getting a Jump on High School." Public School Notebook. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

<http://thenotebook.org/fall-guide-2014/147616/getting-jump-high-school>

This again from the Notebook, this talks about preparing your student for the transition form middle school to high school. Which can be a big jump for most kids and you don’t want to just throw them into that. So this will help most parents with their child, and what small steps they can take before taking the big leap. So this is mainly for parents.

"Selecting a High School: Frequently Asked Questions." The Notebook, n.d. Web.

<http://thenotebook.org/fall-guide-2014/147613/selecting-high-school-frequently-asked-questions>

This is just Frequently Asked Questions. These are for questions I might not know, or for parents or students that need more info. I think again that this will be more helpful for parents that don’t fully trust me. I think this will be good to for something to go back to when for next fall.

Tytianna Broadwater's Capstone

Posted by Tytianna Broadwater in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 9:48 pm

The Capstone Project was made to give me the opportunity to express myself in a creative way while also showing my knowledge on the topic. My capstone was to design and create dance costumes, gymnastics leotards and accessories for the two sports. In order to do so I had to find a mentor, present a proposal, a timeline and then complete all task. My timeline had specific goals to help get my capstone done in an orderly fashion. At times, I fell behind on my timeline because there's was a lot to do at once. When that happened it was important of me to reevaluate my goal, talk to my mentor and find a way to get all necessary task complete.

The finished products for my capstone included 3 leotards, 3 dance costumes, 2 bags, 10 hair accessories and something to work out in. I am proud of my final product because my original goal was not that much. However, I wanted to present the work in a magazine and just 6 things would not have been enough for a magazine.

I plan on becoming a fashion designer after college and completing this capstone I learned a lot about what I would be doing in my future career. I did the process of making sketches come to life. I had to learn to make things on a deadline. I learned how to pose models, how to talk to a photographer and how to make a magazine in a way that would compliment the clothing while being appealing to the eye.

Liukin, Nastia. "NEW Nastia Liukin Collection." Issuu. GK Elite, June 2013. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I found this source useful because its a gymnastics magazine and all designs were designed by a former gymnast. It also gave me an idea as what I wanted my magazine to look like. After looking through the magazine I was aware of what kind of paper they used. I also looked at the order. I really liked the layout. The first page had a picture of Nastia, a picture of her with a model and a short explanation of her work and her partnership with GK. She had one picture on each page of the model, and then the clothes on mannequins with the price. At the end of the magazine she had a quote from a famous designer and her in the work room. The magazine opened my eyes to different ways I could lay out my magazine.

Colgrove, Debbie. "Basic Sewing Techniques for Sewing a Halloween Costume or School Play Costumes." About Home. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This source was useful because it gave me new ideas and a different way to do certain techniques. Some of the the techniques I never heard of before, which helped a lot because it gave me more options in ways I could go with my designs. Some of the techniques on the page I already knew about, however they executed differently than what I would have done. It really helped with one costume in particular. I was having a hard time finding a specific type of material and the website had a step-by-step tutorial on how to make the fabric myself.

"Kellé Company - Dance Costumes, Dancewear, Dance Clothes, Dance Apparel,." Kellé Company - Dance Costumes, Dancewear, Dance Clothes, Dance Apparel, Jazz Costumes, Lyrical Costumes, Kids Costumes, Competition Costumes, Recital Costumes. Kellé Company, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This website was my biggest inspiration. Kellé Company is one of the biggest dance costume distribution around. When I was a dancer this is where all of my costumes were ordered from. They are cute and they are different. Their costume designs are not like other costumes but they don't go too far. Due to the difference in their costumes they helped me design my costumes. I noticed their techniques and what they did to keep their company number 1. I still have some of my old costumes and I looked at the fabrics and how the costume was sewn.

"GK Elite Gymnastics - Special Order Women's Long Sleeve Leotards." GK Elite Gymnastics - Special Order Women's Long Sleeve Leotards. GK Elite, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This source was useful because of their popularity in the gymnastics world. At every competition if not all, almost all teams are wearing GK leotards. The good thing about GK is they have a feature on their website where you can design a leotard based off of templates. That feature helped when designing my leotards because I was able to see what looked good and what didn't before I put it n paper. Another good thing about the website is they do more than just one kind of leotard. They also have a partnership with Under Amour and Adidas. That was helpful because I got to see the difference is what the two companies thought and how they came together to make something.

Vogue, and Butterick. The Vogue/Butterick Step-by-step Guide to Sewing Techniques. New York: Prentice Hall, 1989. Print.

This book was helpful because of the year it was made. Over time the teaching and techniques of sewing has changed. The book was written when techniques were different and its better to have more than on way of doing something. I was taught how to sew at an actual sewing shop by younger people. Im not sure who they were taught by but the techniques in the book were different than the techniques I was taught. Not all were different and some were a little different. Everyone has a different way of doing things, sometimes one way is better than another way. With me having more than one technique is better because If I don't like how to do a certain thing it may not come out as well as it could have.

Kensington. "How to Make: See-through Sheer Leotard." YouTube. YouTube, 16 June 2012. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This video was useful because I have never sewn with sheer before and I was a little hesitant and nervous to do so. Leotards are extremely hard to make and they take time and you have to keep a close eye on everything you do. Sheer is also extremely hard to work with because of how thin it is and the texture of the fabric. Sheer rips very easily and If I didn't know what I was doing I could have ripped it and wasted money. In the video she goes step by step. She starts by drafting a pattern and goes all the way to the end.

"Six Secrets to Create a Budget You Can Stick With." Six Secrets to Create a Budget You Can Stick With. HSBC, 1 Aug. 2008. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This source was useful because fabric and rhinestones and all other accessories a person needs to sew an article of clothing can be very expensive. Due to the fact that I have not figured out how I'm going to pay for these materials I had to create a budget. Creating the budget will make sure I don't spend excessively and end up broke. My goal is to use nice fabrics and accessories but not spend too much money. The website was about sticking to a budget for everyday living. However, it still helped because it talked about savings and how to keep your plan.

"50 Incredible Photography Techniques and Tutorials - Smashing Magazine."Smashing Magazine. N.p., 21 Apr. 2009. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This article was useful because I will be displaying my work by making a magazine. The  most important thing in my magazine will be the pictures. I have not decided who will be taking the pictures. However if its me or a friend I need to make sure the pictures come out the best quality they possibly could be. The website was so helpful because they gave 50 tutorials and techniques on how to take good pictures.

"Baum's Dancewear: Dance Apparel & Shoes, Costumes & Costume Accessories." Baum's Dancewear: Dance Apparel & Shoes, Costumes & Costume Accessories. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This source has a website but also a store in Philadelphia After school one day I went to the store and I looked around the store to see what the costumes and leotards looked like and i looked at the stitch lines and the accessories. I was also able to talk to the people who work at the store and talk about the process of ordering and selling. That was really useful because it gave me a look at what I was in for and what it would be like if I owned my own store one day. I also purchased a costume and took it apart to get a closer look at the detail.

"How to Sew Lycra Without Puckered Seams : Clothing Accessories Crafts."YouTube. YouTube, 2 Nov. 2013. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This video was useful because I have made leotards before but she sews her leotards differently than how I do. Her technique and tutorial was immensely helpful. Puckered seams make an outfit look really cheap and unprofessional.

"Sewing Barefoot: Flower Headband." Sewing Barefoot: Flower Headband. All Things Crafty, n.d. Web. 15 Apr. 2015.

This website was helpful because I wanted to make a flower headband however I didn't know how to. The website told me what materials I needed and how to make it.

"Pretty Pansy Fabric Flowers." Martha Stewart. N.p., 08 Apr. 2014. Web. 15 Apr. 2015.

This source had an online pattern as well as a tutorial on how to make the flowers I wanted to.

"Wonderful DIY Flower Hairpin." WonderfulDIY. N.p., 18 Mar. 2014. Web. 15 Apr. 2015.

I was able to use this source because it had a tutorial to more than one way to make certain flowers.

Lisa Kang Capstone

Posted by Lisa Kang in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:22 pm

I decided to write a novella for my capstone, which is like a novel but not as long. As someone who is interested in math and science, I wanted to try something that was completely new, in fact I've been wanting to write a novel for a while now, but I never had the time or motivation to complete it. Before I actually started writing, I did a lot of planning for the characters and plot, but while writing I barely used any of it. The novella is completely different than I imagined it in the beginning of the year. I learned that you won't ever know the direction that a story will go in because ideas are developing all the time. Towards the end of my novella I thought I knew exactly how I wanted to end it, but I came up with an awesome plot twist that changed many things in the story so I had to go back and edit everything. In an instant, my novella went from supernatural/horror story to mystery one. Writing something this long is not as easy as it seems because it takes a lot of time, patience and effort. Through this novella, I have gained skills that will last a lifetime. In college, I will have to write papers and essays all the time and so all the techniques that I learn while doing the project will help me sharpen and enhance my writing skills.

Capstone Excerpt

Bell, James Scott. Write Great Fiction: Plot & Structure. Cincinnati, OH: Writer's Digest, 2004. Print.

This source provides information about the plot and structure of a novel. The book first introduces the LOCK system which stands for Lead, Objective, Confrontation and Knockout. The author states that every story and novel will need these components. The authors says that the function of the plot is to connect to the readers and I found this interesting because I have never thought of it like that. I selected this book because there are explanations/tips and excercises that will help me shape the outline of my novella. This source will be extremely useful because I can follow the diagrams and outlines used in the book.

Donovan, Melissa. "12 Character Writing Tips for Fiction Writers."Writingforward.com. Melissa Donovan, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.writingforward.com/writing-tips/12-character-writing-tips-for-fiction-writers>.

This source provides great information on how to get readers interested in the characters of your stories. It states that people like characters that are realistic because they will feel more of a connection. The characters in a story should not be completely perfect; they should have flaws and baggage. I know that the characters is one of the most important aspects of a story and the tips in here will help guide me into create realistic characters. Depending on the length of a story, there is a certain amount of character development that needs to happen and although this source does not tell me how to incorporate that into a story, it does provide me with a general idea of what I should add in.

Ingermanson, Randy. "The Snowflake Method For Designing A Novel. "Advancedfictionwriting.com. Advanced Fiction Writing, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/articles/snowflake-method/>.

This source provides information of how to design your whole story before actually writing it. The author has written many novels and shares the method that he uses called the Snowflake method. This method is to have writers start off with a small idea and then expand on that. The idea is to continue expanding until you have a complete overview on the plot and characters in a story so that when you actually start writing, it will be easier and quicker. I think that the general ideas in this source will be helpful when I am outlining my story. There were parts of the method that I did not like but there were parts that I will definitely use. It was helpful to see how someone else approaches their story writing.

Kempton, Gloria. Write Great Fiction: Dialogue. Cincinnati, OH: Writer's Digest, 2004. Print.

This book provides information on how to incorporate dialogue into a story. The author points out common mistakes writers make when they try to write fiction. The most important thing to avoid is to think too much about how to write dialogue because dialogue should be natural. People do not always speak properly or correctly and so if writers put themselves into their characters shoes then the dialogue would appeal to people more. There are not a lot of limitations in the book because there are a lot of details throughout. There are examples, tips and excercises that I can reference and use. The book will help me write natural sounding dialogues because I plan on having lot of them in my novella.

Rozelle, Ron. Write Great Fiction: Description & Setting. Cincinnati, OH: Writer's Digest, 2005. Print.

This book provides very detailed and important information on how to write well and also how to establish a setting. Just like with characters, conflicts and dialogues, the setting is something that should be realistic. The author goes into details on how to use the setting to add depth to a story. I selected this book because there are things in there that I personally have problems with and so I can use this to guide me. I tend to have simple sentences and this book helps explain sentence structures and uses of punctuations. I think that the book will become really handle in improving my sentences.

Scheller, Rachel. "Write Fiction That Grabs Readers from Page One."Writersdigest.com. F+W, 2 Oct. 2012. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/there-are-no-rules/write-fiction-that-grabs-readers-from-page-one>.

This source provides information from a book that teaches writers how to grab readers’ attention from the very beginning of your story. This particular source focusses on how to add conflict and problems into the story. There is a particular structure that the author talks about that he thinks is the most effective way to add conflicts. I selected this source because aside from characters, the conflict is another huge aspect of a great story. I learned that in order to incorporate conflicts well, you can not just have one major conflict but there must be little ones in there as well. This source will be useful in my story outline.

Springer, Mike. "Seven Tips from Earnest Hemingway on How to Write Fiction." Openculture.com. Open Culture, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.openculture.com/2013/02/seven_tips_from_ernest_hemingway_on_how_to_write_fiction.html>.

This source provides tips from Earnest Hemingway on how to write fiction. These are the techniques that he finds useful when he is writing his own books. The tips are not directed towards the actually writing, but the mindset that a writer should have. I selected this source because I know that Earnest Hemingway is a great author and so I feel like his tips would be reliable. There was one tip that I found the most interesting and that I want to try. This tip is for writers to stop writing for the day while they still know what will happen next in the story. This is something that I would never think about but it makes a lot of sense because when the next day comes, you will not be stuck trying to come up with the next part. This source will be very helpful throughout the whole writing process.

Stewart, Jennifer. "Tips For Writing A Short Story." Write101.com. Write101, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.write101.com/shortstory.htm>.

This source provides the basic elements that make up a short story or novel. It includes tips for the structure, theme, setting, characters, dialogue and plot. Most of the tips imply that writers should make every aspect realistic and simple. I selected this source because I thought that it would be nice to have one source that has everything that I need to know in order to write an effective story. One limitation of the source is that the tips are not really detailed and there is not a lot of justification for why writers should do the things she mentioned. I did learn a little from the source but it is not as helpful as the other ones.

"Usage- Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement." Towson.edu. Towson University, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.towson.edu/ows/pro_antagree.htm>.

This source provides information on one of the grammar rules that people forget often. The rule is the pronoun antecedent rule that states that a pronoun has an antecedent to go with it. Sometimes people will have one pronoun but they will have no clear distinction between which antecedent it belongs with. The source provides examples of how this rule is used in different scenarios, such as singular form, plural form, and indefinite form. I selected this source because I noticed that this is a grammatical rule that I forget and have trouble with in my writing. I think that this source will be helpful in making sure that my sentences make sense.

Weiner, Jennifer. "I Like Likable Characters." Slate.com. The Slate Group, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2013/05/likable_and_unlikable_characters_in_fiction_claire_messud_and_meg_wolitzer.html>.

This source provides two different opinions on likable characters in a novel. There is one author who believes that if a writer creates a protagonist that is likeable and is like a friend to the readers then that writer is doing something wrong. The author of the article completely disagrees with the previous one because she likes likable characters. I selected this source because I wanted to know what kind of characters people like to read about. This source was helpful because I got two different perspectives on it and I will ultimately decide which argument I agree with more.

Will Amari: 2015 Capstone, Our Beautiful Voices

Abstract:

Hello hello hello! My name is Will Amari. Welcome to my 2015 Senior Capstone Project. For this project, my partner, Alex, and I wanted to collaborate on a podcast centered around passion. It is called, Our Beautiful Voices or: Hey! How’s Your day Going?

We wanted to use this name because we felt that it would help illustrate what we are all about: true stories, honest views, and the occasional quip from passionate people. In other words, we wanted SLA students and their beautiful voices to be heard. We wanted them to express themselves on our show and get the rundown on what they have to say on a subject or subjects that they are interested in.

I learned so many different things about other SLA students—things that I don’t think I would have known if I hadn’t taken the time to interview them. There seems to be a lot of fire in the halls of SLA. What I mean by this is that I learned that SLA students truly do have a drive that is both refreshing and inspiring. That being said, we knew that this podcast had to be good if we were going to paint an accurate portrait of the many characters in our school.

The work was abundant and I was afraid at times that we bit off more than we could chew, but somehow thanks to the guidance of our mentor, Mr. Douglas Herman, and to the encouragement of my partner and I, we managed to complete a professional website along with at least four completed episodes.

I feel confident that others will enjoy our episodes and everything we have to say.

Abumrad, Jad, and Robert Krulwich. "Http://www.radiolab.org/series/podcasts/." Audio blog post. Radiolab. WYNC, n.d. Web.

Radiolab is this cool NPR podcast that was suggested to me by Mr. Best himself. After reviewing this source I saw some cool stuff that gave me many ideas. It made me think about how long I want my radio talk show to be. I noticed that the real show, made for radio, was sixty minutes. I know I didn’t want to listen to myself for that long so I thought about what I should do. On the website, Radiolab has these twenty minute shorts that get straight down to the point. I thought that (twenty minutes) would be the perfect length of a podcast. That way people can tune in on their way to and from school.

Basset, Lynda M. "Interview Tips for the Interviewer." Interview Tips for the Interviewer. Monster Worldwide, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. < http://hiring.monster.com/hr/hr-best-practices/recruiting-hiring-advice/interviewing-candidate s/interview-tips-for-the-interviewerus.aspx >.

I found this source useful because it provided me with nine helpful tips for an interviewer. It’s interesting because people are always laying down the philosophy on how to become a good interviewee, and not too many people seem to realize that an interviewer has an art to it as well. I realized this is an article for a business website and not for a communications website, but I still found the source credible and started practicing some of the skills, or should I say tips, when interviewing and it is my humble opinion that it works. I found myself asking behavioral questions (tip number 2) and kept my interviews on a more, dare I say, professional level.

Davies, Sharron. "How to Involve Your Community." Sustrans. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. < http://www.sustrans.org.uk/change-your-travel/your-community/how-involve-your-community >.

Now, I was a little skeptical of this source at first because the author who wrote this is someone I has not heard of before. Given that is about community involvement (a main focus on my talk show) and she being an outsider from what I believe is the U.K.—what would she know about American community. Well it turns out quite a bit because I’ve learned so much from this source. In fact, I thought this source was so effective that I had to show this to my partner Alex who is really interested in community leadership. Some of the points were stuff I already knew, and could agree with, and some of them I learned. For example, playing people’s strengths. Talking about and learning about people’s ideas, hobbies, and talents on the show really enriches our interviews and thus, their voices are heard.

EduCon 2.7. What Is EduCon? n.d.: n. pag. Print.

I used the topic of EduCon as one of my topics for a show. Even more specifically, an EduCon advertisement. This was used to help me gather my thoughts when trying to explain the concept behind EduCon. EduCon is some of the many topics my partner (Alex) and I enjoy to talk about on our show. EduCon promotes education, education makes for interesting conversations. I was talking about how education was going down hill, and yet we have these wonderful conventions that do nothing but help to improve the education system of today. We also interviewed an EduCon volunteer named Imani Bey who had some interesting input.

Glass, Ira. "Http://www.thisamericanlife.org/." Audio blog post. This Week. Chicago Public Media, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. < http://www.thisamericanlife.org/ >.

It may seem strange to use a radio show as a source, but you have to start somewhere. I have always admired This American Life because of Ira Glasses ability to engage the listener with the use of stories. In a way my show, and Glasses show are very similar. I use this show as a model and as a source of inspiration. I would go as far as to say that we used this show, American Life, to base it on our (Alex and I) own. This was during the beginning when we were brainstorming and coming up with ideas. Our show engages in the community the same way American Life does, which I think is very cool.

Nia Hammond. “Nia Hammond on the arts of Philadelphia.” Personal interview.

For the second interview, I interviewed Senior, Nia Hammond, to discuss the arts in SLA and in Philadelphia as well. Alex and I were curious to get her input on Philadelphia's thriving art scene as well as how SLA students contribute to the creative world. I knew Nia would have a good intake as well as an interesting philosophy. She is a praised dancer, musician, and photographer. I’ve even seen her perform, and I was very impressed. We got her to talk about herself and her achievements as well as the achievements of her fellow peers. She believes the art world is in full blast. It was interesting to hear how she expresses herself through song and dance.

Huffington, Arianna. "Breaking News." The Huffington Post. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. < www.huffingtonpost.com%2F >.

This source, the breaking news section of The Huffington Post, is one of the many sites that I like to get the latest of information from. I have used Huff. Po. many times before. A radio show that promises the latest of information must use reliable sources like The Post and others in order to stay up to date. This is the now. Reviewing the source, I see a wide variety of information and articles. First there are the plans for the 2016 elections and news of the patriots, and then off to the side I see news on Iggy Azalea’s new style. There is lots of information to explore here and plenty to talk about.

Long, Dylan. "Dylan Long on the Rave Culture." Personal interview.

Our first interview, which we may or may not use, was with Dylan P. Long. We figured he’d be good to talk to because of his immense interest in the rave culture with fellow teenages. He’s a photographer who goes to the rave concerts and Alex and I were interested in his point of view of the much dreaded Rave culture. His insight was very informative and convincing. Turns out he is a very good interviewer. Alex and I had our own opinions about the Rave culture and interestingly enough, Dylan agreed with me more. But that’s neither here nor there.

Seiter, Courtney. "6 Powerful Interview Tips." Web log post. Buffer Social. N.p., 7 Jan. 2014. Web. 29 Jan. 2014. < https://blog.bufferapp.com/6-powerful-communication-tricks-from-some-of-the-worlds-best-in terviewers >.

This source, I know is a blog, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be effective and useful. In the blog she, Courtney Seiter, writes the 6 powerful communications tips. I found this site useful for a radio show personality because it is all about radio skills. I discovered it was a fairly decent blog. It talks about preparing notes, but not to be afraid of going off script. One could learn a lot, be daring, research, listen carefully. Then of course, Seiter offers examples of where interviews have gone successful—using Katie Couric and Gay Talese as examples. Seems pretty legit.

Stirewalt, Chris, Howard Kurtz, Dana Blanton, Howard Kurtz, and Serafin Gómez. "Politics." Fox News. FOX News Network, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. < http://www.foxnews.com/politics/index.html >.

Ah yes. I know it’s a common taboo to use Fox News as a resource, but I can’t help myself. I can’t say I’m open minded until I get news and ideas from all perspectives, even if that perspective is the conservative type or better yet fabricated. I like to get the point of view from all angles—look at the full picture—that’s why I read/watch Fox News politics It comes in handy whenever you wish to intensify debates. Whenever the conversation gets dry, I play devils advocate and use Fox News to guide me. This will challenge the interviewee and sometimes even my partner, Alex.

Winter, Jennifer. "How to Play the Devil's Advocate (Without Being Evil)."How to Play the Devil's Advocate (Without Being Evil). Daily Muse, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. < https://www.themuse.com/advice/how-to-play-the-devils-advocate-without-being-evil >.

Now this resource I find to be just plain old fascinating. Devil’s Advocate had always been a social concept that intrigues me. This lovely article, written by Jennifer Winter, is all about how to use Devil’s Advocate effectively and correctly, without being too mean which I think is important to know. Winter seems to have a lot to say and I can’t wait to use more of her tips to spice up the conversations on our radio talk show. In the article she mentions the importance of listening, following along as well as knowing the right time to play the part. This could come into use in real life.

Jenny Cruz, Capstone

Posted by Jennysha Cruz in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 10:00 am

Greetings,

I'm Jenny Cruz a senior at Science Leadership Academy. As the year comes to an end we're challenged to present our findings on a protect we were asked to come up with. The topic was open to personal choice, the requirements  were we'd research a subject throughout this school year and present our new found knowledge in our final senior project. This is a website in which I will document my findings. A site I would hope brings insight and entertainment through some peculiar medical facts of early medicine.

Being a fan of art, creation, acute knowledge and overall dark things I found myself indulging in the oddities of life. And so with my interests fueling my motivation I choose to embark on a journey to the grim and gory side of the world's early medical endeavors. Here I've arranged information depicting gruesome tactics and a lack of, what any modern thinker would consider, common sense of treatment performed on humans. What mishaps took place early in our history may be overlooked as insane and unconventional but has helped shaped what modern medicine we use today.

Like I was once told in a history class, it's best to know the past so that the mistakes made will not repeated.

Inquiry

Research

Collaboration

Presentation

Reflection

The structure to any project based learning I assign myself and the way my school structures our non-conventional learning has the above 5 core values. In SLA's senior project a.k.a. our Capstone required us to implement what we've learned to our own investigations.

I began by thinking of a subject I had an interested in. I'm an amateur artist with a liking for many things and subjects. And so to keep my interests in this project, I decided to showcase various topics within one project. History, Science and Art. I figured a project showing my love for the strange and unusual historic facts about medicine would not only intrigue my brain but enable me to present what some might find dull and boring in an artistic light. On this site you'll find facts i've personally researched and photos I've gathered from the internet alongside some of my drawings of certain topics embedded in this site.

My research took me from oddity shops and museums to old translated German and Greek books/texts. Speaking with others about my ideas and interacting with persons involved in oddity collecting helped steer my research in productive directions. Without outside resources and personnel I don't believe I would have gathered as much as I have.

As for my presentation this website isn't my only way of sharing this knowledge. It is only a media where I keep my gathered data for a later in person presentation where my hand drawn art and findings will be presented to my class and teachers for a final grade.

In my last moments working on this project i've come to appreciate the time and effort I put into something I'm excited to share with others. And hope that my future research will continue with a similar state of mind. Passion and interest help drive and so I would that is an important takeaway for myself and for anyone else looking to take on a research driven project.

Thank you for reading and please enjoy my site.

Max Amar-Olkus Capstone

Posted by Max Amar-Olkus in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 10:15 pm

My capstone was done in collaboration with RubyJane Anderson. We wrote, directed, edited, and starred in two short films about SLA. Before production began, we did lots of research. We researched different types of comedy, journalism, and media production. We wanted our show to be both informative and entertaining so we took inspiration from comedic news programs such as The Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Our research included lots of time spent watching programs like these, to observe what made them such effective platforms for conveying information. After that, we started to think about what issues we wanted to tackle.

In our first episode, we really dug deep into the issue around students cutting the lunch line. We set up a hidden camera to record people cutting the line then identified them and interviewed them. We interviewed some staff members about their thoughts on the line cutting and their ideas for potential change. We filmed all of the interviews then recorded narration, then edited it all together into one cohesive piece. After that, we uploaded it to Youtube.

After finishing the first episode, we moved on to our next idea; the school building. We focused mainly on the holes in the walls and the oversized toilet paper rolls. We researched the owner of the building and tried to contact them for an interview but they chose not to comment. We filmed interviews with students and staff members alike, again, then edited and published it on Youtube.

Maggie Hohenstein Capstone

Posted by Margaret Hohenstein in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 8:26 pm

I created a book full of stories collected from my family members. The stories are organized by date so that when read front to back the book tells the story of our family with as much detail as possible. There are pictures throughout that match with some of the stories, and add a visual representation of us and our lives. At the end of the book is a large selection of blank pages so that people can continue to record stories and memories as they happen. The most important part of this project was collecting the stories. I did this through an interview process. My family is very large, so I only managed to interview approximately half of them. Each person told a story that they thought of when they heard the word family. Then I transcribed what they said, and organized it all into a book. Not only did I learn about my family through this process, but I also learned about how to encourage people to open during an interview, and how to format other's stories into a cohesive piece. This project represents an important part of how I became the person I am, and is set up to continue so that future members of my family will be able to look back and see how we, as a group, have changed through the years.

RubyJane Anderson Capstone

Posted by RubyJane Anderson in Capstone - Hirschfield - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 9:58 am

For this project, Max Amar-Olkus and I wrote, starred in, edited, and directed two short documentaries about SLA. Before we started producing the videos, we did a lot of research. We researched topics relating to comedy, journalism, and comedic journalism. We watched a lot of our favorite news programs like Vice, John Oliver, and Jon Stewart. We then brainstormed some topics for episodes.

Our first story was about cutting in the school lunch line. We set up a hidden camera to document the cutting and to see who was cutting in line. We then identified those people and interviewed them. We also interviewed school staff to see what they thought about cutting in line. After we got all of our footage, we built the story around that and wrote narration for the episode. We recorded the narration, edited the video, then published in on youtube.

After “The Lunch Line”, we decided to do a story about the state of the school building. This episode mostly focused on holes in the wall and the toilet paper problem. Again, we interviewed staff and students, built the story around that, recorded narration, edited, and published.
