Q4 Art Portfolio

This quarter in art is different from the previous 3 because we had the opportunity to choose our our projects, instead of having a set project biweekly. We had to do 4 different projects so I did a 3D origami piece, a series of modular origami, a water color painting, and an abstract drawing. All of these projects have 1 thing in common, my childhood. I used to do these things all the time when I was younger, but stopped when I got older. It felt nice to be able to connect with my old habits. 
My first project is a 3D origami piece that involves folding paper into hundreds of triangular pieces and then inserting them together in a certain patter to create a shape, in my case, I created a swan. There were about 150 small pieces that are fairly simple to make, but very time consuming. Putting the final thing together took a lot of concentration because there is a specific way to place the pieces and I messed up many times and had to start over.
My second project was modular origami, which is similar to the 3D one, but the folding is a lot more complicated, intricate and time consuming. Also combining the pieces is more challenging because it's not as easy as sliding paper on top of each other. For this project I made 5 different pieces: a square box that unfolds into a rose, a colorful spinning top, a star-like piece, an intricate cube, and a flower.
My third project was a water color painting of a scenery, which was both fun and a little challenging because there were so many colors and I had to make sure that things blended in well with each other. I had a lot of fun playing with contrast, color, and shades. 
My last project was an abstract drawing that has a lot of patterns and designs. It's based off of my old doodling habits from when I was younger. I used to fill pages with random drawings and I loved how the lead from the pencil gave the drawing a shine. I was always obsessed with things that were symmetrical and I originally wanted to create a mandala, but this felt more familiar.

Overall, I felt like I did really well this quarter and I'm proud of all my artwork. I love how all of them turned out and I was also able to explore various types of art that I probably wouldn't have if there was a set work we had to do.

I decided to write a novella for my capstone, which is like a novel but not as long. As someone who is interested in math and science, I wanted to try something that was completely new, in fact I've been wanting to write a novel for a while now, but I never had the time or motivation to complete it. Before I actually started writing, I did a lot of planning for the characters and plot, but while writing I barely used any of it. The novella is completely different than I imagined it in the beginning of the year. I learned that you won't ever know the direction that a story will go in because ideas are developing all the time. Towards the end of my novella I thought I knew exactly how I wanted to end it, but I came up with an awesome plot twist that changed many things in the story so I had to go back and edit everything. In an instant, my novella went from supernatural/horror story to mystery one. Writing something this long is not as easy as it seems because it takes a lot of time, patience and effort. Through this novella, I have gained skills that will last a lifetime. In college, I will have to write papers and essays all the time and so all the techniques that I learn while doing the project will help me sharpen and enhance my writing skills.

This source provides information about the plot and structure of a novel. The book first introduces the LOCK system which stands for Lead, Objective, Confrontation and Knockout. The author states that every story and novel will need these components. The authors says that the function of the plot is to connect to the readers and I found this interesting because I have never thought of it like that. I selected this book because there are explanations/tips and excercises that will help me shape the outline of my novella. This source will be extremely useful because I can follow the diagrams and outlines used in the book.

This source provides great information on how to get readers interested in the characters of your stories. It states that people like characters that are realistic because they will feel more of a connection. The characters in a story should not be completely perfect; they should have flaws and baggage. I know that the characters is one of the most important aspects of a story and the tips in here will help guide me into create realistic characters. Depending on the length of a story, there is a certain amount of character development that needs to happen and although this source does not tell me how to incorporate that into a story, it does provide me with a general idea of what I should add in.

This source provides information of how to design your whole story before actually writing it. The author has written many novels and shares the method that he uses called the Snowflake method. This method is to have writers start off with a small idea and then expand on that. The idea is to continue expanding until you have a complete overview on the plot and characters in a story so that when you actually start writing, it will be easier and quicker. I think that the general ideas in this source will be helpful when I am outlining my story. There were parts of the method that I did not like but there were parts that I will definitely use. It was helpful to see how someone else approaches their story writing.




Kempton, Gloria. Write Great Fiction: Dialogue. Cincinnati, OH: Writer's Digest, 2004. Print.

This book provides information on how to incorporate dialogue into a story. The author points out common mistakes writers make when they try to write fiction. The most important thing to avoid is to think too much about how to write dialogue because dialogue should be natural. People do not always speak properly or correctly and so if writers put themselves into their characters shoes then the dialogue would appeal to people more. There are not a lot of limitations in the book because there are a lot of details throughout. There are examples, tips and excercises that I can reference and use. The book will help me write natural sounding dialogues because I plan on having lot of them in my novella.

This book provides very detailed and important information on how to write well and also how to establish a setting. Just like with characters, conflicts and dialogues, the setting is something that should be realistic. The author goes into details on how to use the setting to add depth to a story. I selected this book because there are things in there that I personally have problems with and so I can use this to guide me. I tend to have simple sentences and this book helps explain sentence structures and uses of punctuations. I think that the book will become really handle in improving my sentences.

This source provides information from a book that teaches writers how to grab readers’ attention from the very beginning of your story. This particular source focusses on how to add conflict and problems into the story. There is a particular structure that the author talks about that he thinks is the most effective way to add conflicts. I selected this source because aside from characters, the conflict is another huge aspect of a great story. I learned that in order to incorporate conflicts well, you can not just have one major conflict but there must be little ones in there as well. This source will be useful in my story outline.

This source provides tips from Earnest Hemingway on how to write fiction. These are the techniques that he finds useful when he is writing his own books. The tips are not directed towards the actually writing, but the mindset that a writer should have. I selected this source because I know that Earnest Hemingway is a great author and so I feel like his tips would be reliable. There was one tip that I found the most interesting and that I want to try. This tip is for writers to stop writing for the day while they still know what will happen next in the story. This is something that I would never think about but it makes a lot of sense because when the next day comes, you will not be stuck trying to come up with the next part. This source will be very helpful throughout the whole writing process.

This source provides the basic elements that make up a short story or novel. It includes tips for the structure, theme, setting, characters, dialogue and plot. Most of the tips imply that writers should make every aspect realistic and simple. I selected this source because I thought that it would be nice to have one source that has everything that I need to know in order to write an effective story. One limitation of the source is that the tips are not really detailed and there is not a lot of justification for why writers should do the things she mentioned. I did learn a little from the source but it is not as helpful as the other ones.

This source provides information on one of the grammar rules that people forget often. The rule is the pronoun antecedent rule that states that a pronoun has an antecedent to go with it. Sometimes people will have one pronoun but they will have no clear distinction between which antecedent it belongs with. The source provides examples of how this rule is used in different scenarios, such as singular form, plural form, and indefinite form. I selected this source because I noticed that this is a grammatical rule that I forget and have trouble with in my writing. I think that this source will be helpful in making sure that my sentences make sense.

This source provides two different opinions on likable characters in a novel. There is one author who believes that if a writer creates a protagonist that is likeable and is like a friend to the readers then that writer is doing something wrong. The author of the article completely disagrees with the previous one because she likes likable characters. I selected this source because I wanted to know what kind of characters people like to read about. This source was helpful because I got two different perspectives on it and I will ultimately decide which argument I agree with more.

We answered all the questions from the first podcast and we talked about why companies are allowed to do things like have misleading information. We also talks about how people can change things on graphs to make it look better than it actually is. To go along with that, both of us found a misleading graph and talked about them.

Why are companies allowed to do that?
Why don't companies spend their money on actually make good products than spending money trying to make the products look good?

The College Process

For my digital story, I set out to find out how the tiring college process went for different people. I also wanted to aim this towards the junior who will soon be going through this same process. I know that a lot of people, including myself struggled with this and so I wanted to capture what it looked like. I did this by interviewing a few seniors and asked them about how it went and what they would suggest for the junior to do. I hope that the audience will be able to think back to the process and feel accomplished if they have successfully passed it and if they have not been through it yet, for them to have a sense of how much work it really is.

This quarter, I explored different kinds of artwork; from india ink, abstract art to basic shapes. Most of the artwork this quarter was focussed on the process of drawing rather than trying to create a super detailed or intricate drawing. These art works were the value, basic shapes and animal shapes. The pieces that I enjoyed the most was the abstract drawing and india ink because they're really different from the other pieces. The abstract drawing did not even feel like I was doing a lot of work because I find myself drawing random things all the time and I was able to do that but create something more meaningful. I did not really have a theme this quarter in my work but I learned a lot and I can feel my art skills improving.

As an artist, I wanted to explore different mediums of art. I normally do a lot of drawings but there is so much more to discover. This quarter, there was four assignments. Two of them are drawings, one is a collage and the last one is a photo edit. In my artwork, I wanted to incorporate memories and things that were important to me as a child. I think that a piece of artwork would look a lot better if it was meaningful. My favorite piece was my book illustration because this is one of my favorite children's book. I really resonated with this particular scene in the book when Edward was sinking further and further into the ocean.

This year, the advanced art class separated into 3 different groups, Passing, Middle and FAS. I was in the middle group because I enjoy doing art but I am not as dedicated to fit into the FAS group. According to which group you were in, the assignments varied. One assignment typically takes up two weeks therefore the work should be nice and polished.

Since I took advanced art last year as well, I was able to use previous skills in my art work this year as well. There were five assignments this quarter that explored different mediums of art. Although the mediums were different, most of my work was based of of childhood memories. I wanted to put a piece of my past into my current work because these memories were times that made me happy and that was something that I wanted to express. This quarter, we did plenty of sketches and drawings but we were also able to paint and explore other mediums.

I am most proud of my self portrait because I think that it is very similar to the actual picture that I based it off of. I enjoyed using and furnishing my drawings with pencil skills. The portrait gave me the opportunity to explore shading and hatching. I was surprised that it it did not take long to complete the portrait but it still looks amazing because I had this class last year as well.

I look forward to the art work that I will have to do next quarter because I know that there will be a lot of variety. I hope to further improve my art skills and to just have fun as well.

This quarter I did some fantasy drawings such as the dragon. There were also a lot of drawings where we had to focus on line hatching and shading which I thought was a still a bit hard. And lastly, there was a lot of drawings where I had to examining and study different things, such as the nose or face. These were all quick sketches that still produced a great drawing.

This quarter I continued to practice shading but I also learned new skills about drawing animals and cartoon characters. One of the things that I enjoyed this quarter was learning about how to draw some portions of people such as lips and ears. Some of the drawings this quarter had to use different colors and so I had some practice with colorful drawings.

My name is Lisa Kang and I'm a junior. Throughout the quarter, I have been improving my art skills by following many series of art lesson through the website called drawspace. First, we focussed on find our comfortable strokes and lines and then we got into more difficult things such as shading and hatching. These are a series of my work throughout the quarter. I put a lot of effort and time into them and I think that I have improved a lot.

Book Review-Graceling

This is a book cover of Graceling that was redesigned. All the words besides the name of the author are written in ciphers. The code for this cipher is "Lady Killer" and the new alphabet is alined along the bottom of the cover. The cover has a map of the Seven Kingdoms with the major cities labeled.

Katsa, known as “The Lady Killer,” travels across the kingdoms, only to discover a truth that is so horrible and threatens her life. Graceling is set in a place where there are Seven Kingdoms and in these kingdoms, there are people who can be born with two different colored eyes, called Gracelings. Gracelings are graced with different skills, ranging from speed, mind-control and many more. Once their eyes settle into two different colors, they are immediate sent to the king of their kingdom to become his tools. Katsa, niece of King Randa of the Middluns is graced with killing and is used by him to torture his enemies. Katsa does not like that she has to torture people, therefore she created a secret council that goes around saving people in need, as a way to rebel secretly. While on a mission, she meets Prince Greening Grandemalion or “Po”, of Lienid who is supposedly graced with fighting. There has been news that Queen Ashen of Monsea, aunt of Prince Po has locked herself and her daughter, Princess Bitterblue in her rooms because of the kidnapping of her own father. Po feels that is very unlikely that Queen Ashen would lock herself and that there has to be a different reason for it. Together Katsa and Po traveled through the borders of the other kingdoms to reach Monsea, only to find the nasty truth and now having to save Princess Bitterblue.

The author of the novel, Kristin Cashore is an American fantasy author from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a new author compared to others authors. Her debut book, Graceling, was published in October 2008 and the companion, Fire, was published one year later in October 2009. The third book, sequel of Graceling, Bitterblue, was released on May 1, 2012. These are the three books that was published from Kristin Cashore. She is currently working on more books.

Kristin Cashore’s writing style is very unique and descriptive. She has a certain way of conveying character’s emotion and feelings without saying it straightforwardly. The emotions that her characters have are relatable to readers due to the fact that she makes them seem very realistic. She paints images beautifully, that allows the readers to imagine this amazing world that she created.

Kristin Cashore explores a few themes throughout Graceling, that teenagers can connect with at this moment. One major theme in the book was that no one can define your identity but it must be discovered from within. Katsa has a killing grace which is feared by almost everyone who has heard of her and so they think of her like a monster. When others think of her as a monster, she accepts and believes that she is. Throughout the book, she discovers that she does not have to be what people assume her to be because that is not her true self. On page 137, she thought, “When a monster stopped behaving like a monster, did it stop being a monster?” At this part, she began to realize that she was killing people because she was told to by the king but this was not something that she wanted to do. From this moment on, she started to discover and show others that she is not a monster but something else entirely.

Another theme was that women can live comfortably without having men to protect or lead them. Kristin Cashore tends to depict strong, independent and confident girl characters in her books especially in Graceling. In Katsa’s mind, she thinks that marrying would mean that she would have no more freedom and that it would make her an object of a male and that is why she choose not to marry at all. Not only is she a woman who can survive and provide for herself, but she also wants other girls, especially the younger ones to do the same. She despises the fact that some girl do not even know how to protect themselves but have to rely on their male family members instead.

Graceling exceeded my expectations because it was really different and it was a page turner for me. I loved how she was able to create a world so unique and amazing that I wanted to know more. I wanted to know more about everything because it is the type of book that leaves me wondering. The storyline was interesting, the book was well written, the emotions were so realistic, the world was amazing. This is truly one of the best books I have ever read and I can not get enough of it. It exceeded my expectation to the point that I had to pick it back up and read it over again. Every time I read it, I get something new from it, yet at the same time it is like deja vu. My second time reading it felt like my first. I got excited, angry, happy, surprised all over again, like I did not know what was already going to happen. It is very hard to find a book that can have this effect on me therefore there was nothing that I did not like.

This book may not be the perfect type for some people but I recommend this book to people who are looking for something new and different because they may end up liking it. Also this book would be great for people who love fantasy and want to discover a whole new world that is both beautiful and horrible at the same time. This book is for people who love to read about women who are strong individuals. Even if this is a book that does not sound interesting, I suggest giving it a try because it is a book full of mysteries and secrets.

How writing helps me

I write when I have something that's bothering me but I cannot tell anyone else. Writing helps me gets all my feeling out and lifts my mood when I'm feeling down. It's hard to tell people things and so writing it all down could also give the same effect as telling someone but without actually doing it.

Este artículo está sobre el muerte de una niña que tenía doce años. Ella murió a viente dos de septiembre de dos mil diez y tres a el municipio de Teo. El cadáver de la niña tuve muchos signos de violencia. Dos personas hallaron el cadáver de la niña próximo un pisto de bosque a la una y media. Después, ellos alertaron los servicios de las emergencias. El alcalde dijó que ellos no tuvieron muchos informaciones de este investigación pero ellos va a buscar más.

La víctima era una niña adoptada de china. Ella era una estudiante muy buena y enseñaba clases de música y ballet a otros niños. Ella era muy fabulosa y talentosa. Los padres de la víctima viven en Santiago de Compostela. Santiago de Compostela es próximo a el pisto de bosque.

Yo elegí este artículo porque es muy interesante. También es muy triste porque ella era un persona joven. Yo tengo ser cuidadoso más porque esta peligroso. Después de leer este artículo no me gusta caminar cuando era la noche. Lo siento mucho por la familia y los amigos.

Podcast Reflection

Although I have done interviews a few times before, this time it felt like something different because it was something that I could really connect with, especially because I was interviewing my own brother. I always knew that during interviews, you could find out things that you would not have known before but there was never a connection with any of the interviews I have done before. In sixth grade, I interviewed one of my teachers about him and his partner and I did not feel so interested because I could not connect with anything at all but when I interviewed my younger brother, it was different. Everything my brother said was connected to me in every way and sometimes when he spoke about something in general, there was this feeling that he was directing it at me. I learned that crossing boundaries do not have to be huge events but it can just be living life everyday just like my brother. He seemed to be so happy but inside he was feeling something different and if I had not done the interview, I would not have knew. Also, I learned that crossing boundaries can be something good but it can also be something bad. Since, I realized how my brother felt, I feel like I could use that to help show him that it’s not exactly like what he thinks. Like, when he said that he felt like a prisoner because he does so much work, I want he to look at it from a different perspective because we all do a lot of work. Not only did I learn more about my family, but I learned about making a podcast and it is something that I think will come in handle in the future. This was my first time making a podcast and it took so long because I did not know how to do it but if I was to do it again, I feel like I would be able to do it much better. 

Humanities Final Portfolio 2013

Everyone is different and therefore there is never one "correct" way to teach them. Learning is not just reading a textbook and taking quizzes but it extends way beyond that. There are many different ways to learn that are more creative and they vary depending on each person. Not everyone can be able to learn well through reading but there are other ways such as through listening or visuals. Throughout my history and english 10th grade course, I have experienced many different methods of learning and realized that they are all unique in their own ways. The way we learned throughout the year was just as important as the material itself.

One of our major projects this year was to interview someone and make a podcast to explore the topic of crossing boundaries. We had a few class discussions but did not go to much in depth about it until we all finished our podcast. While sitting through the interview and listening to the other podcast, I gained something that I would have never gotten if it was in text form or discussions. I felt and heard the emotions expressed through listening. In my reflection of the podcast, I wrote, “Although I have done interviews a few times before, this time it felt like something different because it was something that I could really connect with, especially because I was interviewing my own brother.” If my brother was to write down everything he said and hand it to me, I would have read it but not feel any connection at all. The podcast added a deeper layer to my experience in learning about crossing boundaries. I was able to learn about the boundaries in general and also apply that to my life. If it was not for this podcast then I would not have known so much more about my brother.

The class also spent a huge amount of time writing our own play. Plays normally have a storyline to them that makes people interested but writing plays takes a lot of skill. Writing a play is not like writing an essay but it enables so much more creativity. Students are most likely going to put more effort into something that they enjoy and that is why writing a play is so important. It increases our writing skills but it also shows that we can learn from writing something that is not as formal as an essay. When I gave a brief summary of my play, I wrote, “One of the girls is a famous star who dreams of going back to school but cannot because she is too busy. The other girl is very poor and tries to find money to pay for her tuition and take care of her family at the same time.” Although this play did require a lot of editing, it also helped me learn about the life of people in different countries.

As one of our earliest projects, we had to write a series of monologues from different perspectives. Although there may be articles and news about the different views of the pipeline coming from certain groups of people but there is so much more we can learn. Writing monologues gave us an infinite range to choose from. We can write from the perspective of the pipeline, the trees, the earth, the water and so much more. For one of my monologues, called “One In Thousands,” I wrote from the point of view of a sensor in the pipeline and one of my lines was, “If something goes wrong, they’ll just blame us. “Oh, there’s something wrong with our sensors.” Pathetic. Why is it that I’m the only one that could see that we shouldn’t be here?” In order to express the feeling of a sensor, I had to do plenty of research. The monologues helped me have a better understanding of the effect of the pipeline because I did a lot more work and put more effort into it but at the same time it did not feel like much because it was an enjoyable project.

These are just a few examples of ways of learning that are different in many aspects from each other. Providing a range of projects can really help individuals have a better understanding of things because they each go into depth about a certain parts. Plays can help with the structure, monologues with the feelings, and podcasts with the connection. I am not the person who could understand things by reading a book and answering some questions so using creative methods in learning really boosted my knowledge. I paid attention to the methods and realized that everyone has a unique way of learning that suits them and that is a really important aspect in education.

Everyone is different and therefore there is never one "correct" way to teach them. Learning is not just reading a textbook and taking quizzes but it extends way beyond that. There are many different ways to learn that are more creative and they vary depending on each person. Not everyone can be able to learn well through reading but there are other ways such as through listening or visuals. Throughout my history and english 10th grade course, I have experienced many different methods of learning and realized that they are all unique in their own ways. The way we learned throughout the year the way we learned was just as important as the material itself.

One of our major projects this year was to interview someone and make a podcast to explore the topic of crossing boundaries. We had a few class discussions but did not go to much in depth about it until we all finished our podcast. While sitting through the interview and listening to the other podcast, I gained something that I would have never gotten if it was in text form or discussions. I felt and heard the emotions expressed through listening. In my reflection of the podcast, I wrote, “Although I have done interviews a few times before, this time it felt like something different because it was something that I could really connect with, especially because I was interviewing my own brother.” If my brother was to write down everything he said and hand it to me, I would have read it but not feel any connection at all. The podcast added a deeper layer to my experience in learning about crossing boundaries. I was able to learn about the boundaries in general and also apply that to my life. If it was not for this podcast then I would not have known so much more about my brother.

The class also spent a huge amount of time writing our own play. Plays normally have a storyline to them that makes people interested but writing plays takes a lot of skill. What is unique, special, or different about graphic novels?

In what ways is a story told through a graphic novel different from a story told in another genre (novels, film, audio, photographs)?

Something unique about graphic novels is that there is mainly dialogues to go with pictures. It does not focus too much on the background and extra detail. It is easy to read along but is able to tell a great story. We could actually see what is happening instead of having to imagine. Graphic novels are told differently from other genres because it uses both the visual aspect and the words to tell a story. It gives us a range and it could be similar to movies, photographs and novels.

I agree with this quote because having a belief is what we live for and we fell really strongly about it but an idea is a thought. An idea may not turn into killing because we will not feel as strongly about it but if we think that killing is the right path than it will be more likely to turn into that.

I think that this quote means that the blood is like our difference and the bandage is covering up our differences and it gives us a sign that we could feel like we are safe. Just like with religion, we could all be different, but religion gives us something to fall back on.
I also think that the bandage represents healing because if we do something wrong we could go to religion because it gives us something to believe in even if we feel hopeless. religion is something that could give us a meaning in life.

Age is something that separates everyone therefore different age groups go through different experiences and struggles. Kids may seem to always be joyful and always happy but deep down inside, they feel restricted and they dislike so many things because of their age. This is the story of the life of my younger brother and all the things he went through. He talks about the complications he has and we do not have because of his age in general and also his age compared to his family.

In English class, we had a unit on language and the role it plays in our everyday life. Also we explored the topic of language as the part it plays in our identities. We read many stories about language in other people's life such as Jame Baldwin and Bell Hooks, so we were assigned a project. This project is an autobiographical paper that explore themes in language that connects to our personal life. The theme that I chose to explore was whether language is an advantage or a disadvantage. My language autobiography shows that language can be both of those but it if we learn more about language than we could use it as an advantage. Since language is an important part of everyone's life, we should find ways to use it that would have a bad effect on ourselves.

I had just found out that my grandmother had cancer on Christmas Eve, so my family and I went to visit her. She was so frail and weak. It was like she was a completely different person than what I had remembered. Even though she was sick, she still greeted us with a warm smile and hug. I stayed in her living room watching my cousin play games on the Wii. My uncle walked into the living room and told us to eat pizza. After eating the pizza, we were getting ready to leave.


My grandmother was sitting on the sofa with my mom right beside her. Her face was full of exhaustion and her head was laying back on the sofa. She grabbed my hand and started speaking to me in Chinese. I was shocked because I have forgotten all of it. I was not answering her because I just could not.


“Ahh. Yang nea yay jomoi ma yan mek. (Like this, how is she going to speak with me.)” My grandmother was speaking to my mother.

“She’s just being shy.”

“Ma asked you if you were doing good in school.”

“Yes.”

I couldn’t do anything but stare at my grandmother. I felt like there was an inner battle with myself. I wanted to speak to her so bad but I could not speak. In this moment, I felt like if I was to speak Cambodian, which she could also understand, I would just sound weird and she would not be able to understand me anyway. In my mind, there were things that I wanted to say to her but my mouth stayed shut. I wasn’t comfortable speaking Cambodian nor did I understand what she was saying to me in Chinese. My grandmother continued to ask me questions in Chinese and all I could do is nod my head without knowing what was happening.


At a time like this, I felt like knowing more than one language would be a huge advantage because it will allow me to communicate with other people, especially with people I love. Not being able to communicate with someone that you may not see again because of language is very upsetting but there is no point of knowing more than one language if we are not able express yourself completely. Knowing many languages could also be a disadvantage because of the restrictions it gives us. Sometimes I feel like I have blocked from saying what I want. I’m never fully able to express myself especially in different languages because I often feel like I want to say a lot more but I cannot because saying words in a language besides English feels so uncomfortable.

It is just another school morning for my family and I. It is about 7 o'clock in the morning and I am sitting quietly on the black couch with a red blanket wrapped around me in the living room. The room is dark and the only light it gets is from the bright light in the kitchen.  


Since it was a Wednesday and I normally go to Fleisher’s Art Memorial on Wednesdays, my mom asked, “Lisa, tov art de (Are you going to art today)?”

“No. Not today.”

“Haet ey(Why)?”

“Because I have a break until January 8th. It’s like winter break.”

“Lisa, mommy paep ta i yay khmer. (I told you to speak Cambodian.)”

She always bring this up and I never win when we argue so I just sighed and replied, “Yes.”

“What time are you going to be home?”

“At 3.”

“Again. I said speak Cambodian.”

I wanted to argue with my mom but I could not. She was already complaining about me not speaking Cambodian and I could only argue in English. At this time, I felt like my life would be much better if I only spoke one language because using one more than the other one, I begin to forget words, then phrases and so on and this makes it harder for me to say what I want.

Language is something that plays a big part in everyone lives and can often be an advantage or disadvantage to people. Some people thinks that knowing more than one language helps us express ourselves more but others may disagree and say that it does not help but actually puts a restriction on us. People should used language as an advantage because if we are able to know a language clearly, it would not come as a disadvantage.


Coming from a family that speaks two different language and living in an environment that speaks another language, I had a hard time communicating with different people. Since I was not able to keep up with three languages, I began to forget the ones from my family and only using English because it was the one that I used the most. When I was not able to talk to my grandmother, I realized that if you are bilingual, then you should use it to your advantage by not forgetting it. There are people that pay to learn what you can get from your family, unlike me, I forgot Chinese completely and this caused me to not be able to speak to half of my family.


In the story, “Tongue-Tied” by Maxine Hong Kingston, the main character got her tongue cut off so that she would not be tied to just one language and so that it could be free. Her mother stated, “I cut it so that you would not be tongue tied....”(pg. 164). Her mother felt like cutting off her daughter’s tongue would be the best choice for the daughter because then she would be able to speak multiple languages and not tied all around one. Also the girl stated, “I enjoyed the silence...”(pg. 164). She enjoyed staying silent and I think this is because she does not know how to control language and turn it into an advantage. She speaks two different languages but she prefers not to speak often rather than me because I rather just speak one.


People should know that language is a privilege and if they do not want it to be a disadvantage in their life, then they should embrace it so that it becomes an advantage instead. Language gives us the power to communicate with other people and that is an important aspect in life but it also creates a net, allowing only the little things we want to say through but not the bigger things. In order for us to break this net, we have to be willing to learn more about language. It is like trying to find a solution to a problem, we cannot find the solution until we learn about the problem.

Pipeline Monologue Project

​ Over the past couple weeks, I learned about the Keystone XL Pipeline in my World History class. The Keystone XL Pipeline is a project that the company, TransCanada is trying to complete. This pipeline will be 1700 miles long and is estimated to carry 800,000 barrels of oil a day. While learning about it, I noticed that there were many different perspectives about the pipeline. There are people who thought it would be good, people who thought it would be bad and even people who do not care at all. We were assigned to write a 3-5 monologues. I worked with a partner for this project and we tried to make our monologues have many different perspectives, not just from people's perspective but of objects also. We tried to put ourselves in the position of these people and objects. Overall, I learned that we can not just look at something from one perspective but we have to look at it from many so that we could have a better understanding. I hope that after you read these monologue, you will realize the other perspectives of the pipeline. 
​Monologue #1: The Indigenous Runaway

(Kneeling in front of suitcase, calls out) “Yes mom!” God, she’s so annoying of course I’m packing. She thinks I want to -, “In a second mom! I’m packing!” god I can’t wait to get out of this hell hole. To get away from her. “MOM STOP NAGGING! COME IN HERE IF YOU THINK I’M NOT PACKING!” (pause) Aww shit, “No, mom, I’m sorry. No mom don’t cry.” Ugh. (Slams suitcase)


She always does this. I don’t get why she’s so upset. It’s not easy living here. We finally have an excuse to leave but I seem to be the only one who sees it. That’s why I’m leaving tonight, not tomorrow, with the group, tonight. I can’t wait any longer, (re-opens suitcase) “Hey Mom! (pause) Yeah! I know I’m still sorry. Where’s my sock? (pause) Why are you crying?! IT’S A SOCK MOM CALM DOWN!”


I guess she has a point. I mean I never really did think about why we’re leaving. That fucking pipeline. I don’t even know what it’s about, just that there’s oil and it’s coming from here.  So we gotta leave. It’s dumb really. I don’t even get the idea of transporting that much oil. Like why? Especially if it’s causing this many people this much pain. That’s all. It’s killing my family and I don’t want that to happen but.... (Closes suitcase), “MOM! (pause) No sorry I’ll stop.” I start thinking like her and then she goes and says something like that. Thanks mom, glad I’m annoying and ask too many questions. Shit though, she’s gonna make so hard to run away. Shit brain, I don’t want to see that. She’s gonna cry isn’t she, she’s gonna cry hard.


She shouldn’t. I’m not worth it, and this is my only chance. I may never be allowed to leave again but, (pause) well I’m taking advantage of a bad situation. It’s not a good thing. At least, that’s what they told me. It just runs through everything and chops down everything. That’s what papa told me. That those other men just cut down all the trees so they can get all the oil out of the ground to use to drive their cars. I probably.... shouldn’t.... use that to run away but, but, but, I have to get out of here. No matter what.  “MOM! ONE LAST QUESTION! (pause) Please mom? (pause) Would you kill me if I ran away?”


Monologue #2: One In Thousands

(Sitting down, Annoyed)Not many people know that my “kind”, the sensors exist in the pipeline but the people that do think that we are like superstars. (One sided conversation)“Pleaseee!!! Just shut up.” (Sigh) “Momma, stop yelling at me!” I should have never said anything. “Am I even your daughter? (Pause) “Then why are you yelling at me? I just...wanted to express my feelings towards our new home. I don’t like it. Is that wrong?” (Pause) (Roll her eyes) “I don’t care if we all need a new job. (Hand gestures)There’s plenty of jobs out there that won’t have such high expectations of us.”


(Pause)(Sound apologetic) “No, no. That’s not what I mean. I didn’t...” (Pause) Mom! I’m sorry. I’m not saying that you aren’t good enough. It’s just that, I’m just afraid that if we fail... you know. What will happen to us? The company already put in a lot of good words for us and made us sound amazing and if we made a mistake...all the other sensors will blame us. And not just them but everyone else also. Mom...don’t walk away, please...” (Sigh) “Dad.. where are you going? I just..” Great just great. My parents are having another “deep” conversation. I guess, I’ll just take a walk around the neighborhood.


(Stare to the right)Look at those kids. Laughing and playing without a worry in their mind. Little do they know what they are going to grow up having to deal with. All 16,000 sensors will have to go through years of pain and hate. The company? They don’t care about us. They only think about themselves and money. Greedy people. If something goes wrong, they’ll just blame us. “Oh, there’s something wrong with our sensors.” Pathetic. Why is it that I’m the only one that could see that we shouldn’t be here?


I always knew I was different. Ever since I was little, I would express my feelings and if I disagreed with something, I would tell people why. Suddenly, one of the kids starts to brag about how awesome they are. I can’t stand it anymore. I had to talk to them. “Are you guys not scared of working here?”


(Pause) “Of course I am. You guys won’t ever understand why.” (Pause) They’re laughing at me. I’m not going to waste my time explaining to them. No one ever listens. “Hey, don’t tell me to get lost.” (Pause) “SHUT THE HELL UP!” Gosh, they are so rude. Wait..get lost? Why not? That’s a brilliant idea. If I don’t wanna stay here, I don’t have to. I’ll make it. Find a new place to stay or even go back to our old home.


(Rrrrrring...) “Hello? Oh hey aunt Sally. What’s up?” (Pause) “Really?? Mom and dad would definitely be okay with it. Nooo, you don’t have to talk to them. I’m sure they’ll let me go. Okay, see you soon. (Hangs up phone and throws it away) Bye bye pipeline.

Monologue #3: Be Like a Tree and 'Leaf'

(Holding arms straight at sides, look tired eyes nearly closed)

“Ahhh the forest, so peaceful. So quiet. So... so.. lonely.” (pause) “Jimmy shut up. I wasn’t talking to you. Yeah I know you’re ‘always there for me.’ Trust me, I can tell when you’re branches come flying into me. You don’t have a choice.” (pause) “I didn’t mean anything by it. Just that I’m kind of bored. Ooooh look people, Jimmy shut up.”


Who are they? Wait, what was that they just said? Pipeline what’s that? Oil? Oh is that what that taste has been. I hope they get it out. OH GOODY THAT’S THEIR PLAN! (pause twiddle thumbs) Wait hold on, what was that? Cut down all the trees? Hold on.. Wait. Cut down? I mean- well- It’d be different scenery. Well, no scenery. Doesn’t sound so bad I guess. It’d be quieter. Actually, it sounds great. (smile) I never noticed that this is what I wanted. (frown) But it all makes sense now. Wait hold on, but the rest of the forest, and the people- the natives. They’ll all have to leave, everyone else will get cut down.


Oh thank god they're gone, “Jimmy (pause) Yeah I know. (pause) Is it bad that I want- Is that what they said, 1700 miles long? That’s really long.” I’m not that important but if they don’t cut me down I could be here for another hundred years! I can’t last 100 years with Jimmy. I just can’t. Not that I really have a choice. I just feel like I need to have a side, “Hey Jimmy (pause) Wait I’ll ask in a second, more people are coming,” It’s the natives. (listening) Did he just say that this pipeline thingy thing would run through the aquifer? That’s not- that’s not okay. But gosh what it would be like not to have to live here anymore. Not to have to carry these branches or taste the oily water through my roots day after day after day. Wait hold on, spills? What kind of spills are they talking about? Wait like, like the oil here? Other plants, maybe even animals are gonna have to taste this?


That’s, not good. I don’t want other people to go through this. I don’t think I have a choice in sides. Oh and there go the natives. At least I have time- well maybe not. More people.. What is that their carrying? It looks like, ladders? A little ironic of them to be carrying wooden ladders. You know through a forest and all. Ow! Get off!! (flinch arm) No one said you could do that. Why the hell are you climbing up there? That’s my branch! (Glare at arm) Excuse you! Holy shit how many of you are coming. No, no let’s stop there. Oh, oh yeah, no let’s not kick the ladder down either. Ohh kay then. Guess we’re hanging out then huh. Guess my side has been chosen, pipelines are bad... apparently.


​Monologue #4: Spinning Slowly

(Surprised)(Look over to the left shoulder) “WHAT??? YOU WANT ME TO DESTROY THE HUMANS? SAM, YOU MUST BE CRAZY!!!” (Pause)(Look over to right shoulder) “What do you think, Sammy?... Okay! (Angry) NEVER MIND. STOP FIGHTING!! (Sigh) (Cover ears) Will both of you just go away? (Whining) Please.. I need time to think on my own so would you please do me a favor and leave?” (Sigh)


(Frown and sound disappointed) What’s the point? Telling them to go away is the same as telling myself to go away. (Look straight ahead) Have you guys ever had that weird feeling...when you hear tiny voices inside you, that keep on telling you things? Oh, right it’s call your conscious. Well, I have 2 of them and they do not like each other. And when I say that they don’t like each other, (Slowly and out a lot of emphasis on the word “hate)I mean they absolutely hate each other. Sometimes I wonder how they both could be inside of me without destroying me. But that’s not what I should be worrying about. Well....at least for now.


For such a long time now, I’ve been very stressed and it’s all because of ruthless humans. If they could hear me, I would ask them why. Just why are they still trying to destroy me. I have given them a shelter for many, many years now and they just don’t seem to care about me. That pipeline is going to harm me and all living organisms on the planet. But they don’t care. (Look and sound evil) Maybe Sam is right. If I destroy them all, then I would be a much happier planet. I could live like all the other planets. It would work. (Trying to sound convincing) Yeah, I mean if they don’t care about me, then I don’t have to care about them right? I could drown them all and that’s what I’m going to do. (Sigh) (Frown and sound disappointed) Ahhh, but I... can’t. I want to do it but Sammy also has a good point. I could wait and just watch them slowly destroy themselves. (Sigh) I guess I’m just not heartless. I can’t do it. I won’t do it... well at least not now.


​Monologue #5: A Brand New Job

(Standing stage right as if just got home) “Shut up!” (storm stage left and lift two bundles out of cradle) “You’re always crying.” (begin to rock bundles) “I guess I would be too. Living in this house” (walk to seat stage right, sit) “But don’t worry sweeties (smile) I got a job now. That’s right (pride) you’re big ol’ dad went and got himself a job. A good job too, pay me good and keep my mind off things. Awww don’t worry Lil, (stop rocking one child) Mama will be home with you. Mama works at night. That’s right. She gets to play and I gets to sleep.


Oh but let daddy tell you about this new job. (stop rocking both kids, hold out) Daddy’s building a pipeline, that’s right. For all the oil way up here in Canada to get all the way down to Texas. Probably the longest pipeline in history. I don’t start just yet. Got to get the okay from the big man down south. (pause) That’s right Lil, Obama. He ain’t approved it yet but I don’t know why he wouldn’t. It’s a damn good thing for them to get the oil from us, they don’t need nobody elses. Anyways its cheaper up here. And you know what the man who hired me said. He say that the pipeline gonna lower gas prices. Mmmmmhhhhmmm. I mean, I heard some rumor that this oil is tons dirtier but rumors are rumors. (Sad, worried) But der sure are a whole lotta rumors. People keep sayin’ it’ll spill or that it’s all corruption. (Smile) But ne’er mind all that.


Awwwww babies why you gotta start crying again? It’s a good thing! Daddy gonna get us some real money, to buy a real house. That’s right, (begins to rock again) We gonna get ourselves outta here right when that pipelines through and we gonna get ourselves down to the U S of A. Aww yeah that’s right Joe, you stop crying cause you know things gonna get better


(pause calls out) Naw honey! I ain’t talking to the kids again. (pause) Aw shit Bertha, you make it sound like I’m crazy when you know I ain’t (pause) They were crying is all I was tryin’ to comfort ‘em. (pause) Ain’t no reason for you to be all snippy. (pause) Now hold up! I went and got myself a new job just today so you ain’t got no right to keep callin’ me that! I ain’t lazy anyways. (pause) I know it don’- (pause)


Aww shucks sweetie I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you or nothing. (puts babies down) Aww girl you know I love you. (pause) Yeah I know. (pause) I could drive you if you want. (pause) The twins will be fine. (pause) Alright, you almost ready? (pause) Mhm yeah I can wait.(from here on out move more freely sits down puts feet up reaches for remote, clicks on t.v.) Naw I don’t want to listen to the news right now, let’s find a show huh kids? (looks to the left, smiles clicks remote a few more times) Oh look here’s that show you guys love, Curious george is it? Nah. Oh you ready? (pause) Alright lemme just grab the kids. (pause) Yeah, I know. (pause) Hey sweety (short pause) I’m sorry I got a little angry with you. (Stands taps pocket as if checking for keys walks stage left, picks up kids, one in each arm, waits, walks off screen stage right).

Descriptive Essay- Ride of My Life.

AHHHHHHH!!!!! There’s people screaming everywhere. In front, in back and on both sides of me. Our ride just started and people are already screaming their lungs out. I tried to keep my mind calm as we began to slowly rise up. Higher and higher. From my point, I could see most of the park. People are as tiny as ants from here. As we reach the peak, I shut my eyes and refuse to look down. WHOOOOOOSHHH!!!!!


“Are you sure it isn’t scary?” I asked with a shaky voice. My heart is pounding rapidly and I start to feel uneasy. “Lisa, just trust me. Okay? It’s nothing. Go and sit down. I’ll sit right next to you. Do you remember what you said earlier,” said my cousin, David. I look over at my aunt, who was just getting off of the ride. I sigh. I recalled what I said earlier, “I’ll go on whatever your mom goes on!” Why did I have to act so confident? Well my aunt went on it so I have no choice.


I walked slowly over to a row of four seats and sat in one of the middle chairs. These chairs did not comfort me. They were black with yellow seatbelts that goes around our shoulders. David sits on the left side of me and my other cousin, Peng sits on my right side. As one of the workers fasten all of us into our seats, I know that it’s too late to change my mind. I looked over at David. He smiled widely and said, “I lied. This is the scariest roller coaster here.” My mouth dropped open as our ride began. I should have known better than to trust him especially when he says “trust me.” I always fall for this trick.


The strong wind pushed my small head against the rubber black seat. My head bangs into the back of my seat multiple times giving me a headache. I could feel every sharp turn and twist because with each turn my head would sway along also. I was scared but at the same time I loved the feeling. This isn’t so bad. Why was I even afraid in the beginning? I’m starting to like this. I opened my eyes slowly. We went up, down, left, right, upside down and all around. Roller coasters aren’t horrible, they just seem frightening from the outside. This was my first major roller coaster ride and now all I want to do is go on more amazing roller coasters.


After I got off of the roller coaster, I realized that this was one of the best days of my life. I had such an extraordinary time. Of course everyone has a great time at an amusement park but I have been to Dorney Park many times before. Every other time, I only went on what my family called the “baby rides”. There was a time about a couple years ago where I tried something totally crazy and at this time I loved all sorts of rides. This is how I remember it.


Oh no! We’re going to fast. We’re going to crash. Suddenly our ride came to quick stop. I wasn’t prepared for this. I shot right out of my seat and was falling....


“If you guys are bored, why don’t we try something fun,” said our baby sitter, Randall. At once, the word fun caught mine and my brothers’ attention. “Okay,” we all said with so much excitement. “We’ll make our very own ride right here,” said Randall’s twin brother, Ryan. My heart was beating faster. I loved rides and the thought of having our in right here in our house made me full of energy.

1....2....3.... Randall gives the carpet a little push and then we are sliding down the stairs. I didn’t want to admit it, I was scared. It was going too fast. My heart is beating so rapid that I think it would burst out. Kerry is screaming loudly behind me with his arms hugging me firmly. Next thing you know, we suddenly stopped halfway through. It was too sudden. I flew over Johnny’s head and was starting to drop. Bang. I hit my head on the television and landed on the hardwood floor beneath it. I look up and saw Kerry screaming and kicking. Uh oh. This couldn’t be good. His hands out in front of him and landed right on top of me, pushing against my stomach. Ouch. I should have felt hurt or sick but I didn’t because I had such a great time and it was the most funny thing ever.


Now that I have gone on another roller coaster and I have became more mature, I realized that all of the horrible things that happened to me when I was younger was because I was never informed on how I should sit or where I should put my arms. Since I was older and learned about what to do and what not to do, I had more fun and I actually enjoyed the experience. When I gave things a second chance, I overcame my fears and I’m more willing try something else.


Sometimes people are more scared to try new things or are too scared to learn from their mistakes that they will not be able to enjoy themselves as much as they could have. You can’t always let your nerves take over you just like I did. If you give things a second chance then maybe you will see things differently. I think that everyone should just enjoyed their life to the fullest without holding back.

Bullying-Blog #3

Hi, it’s me again, Lisa. This will be the last blog that I will be posting on bullying. In this project, there is a total of three blog posts. The first one is an informational post that had detailed one my issue, which is bullying. Also this post explains why I chose bullying as my topic. The second blog post was more about my opinions. Finally this blog post is a blog for change because now we are done with giving details about our specific issue but now we are planning to make a difference.


Like I mentioned in my last blog post, I will be announcing the results I found from my own survey. Out of twenty nine people who answered my survey, all of them believed that bullying was wrong. One of the questions asked, What do you think is the worst type of bullying.” The top answers for this question were physical, verbal, and cyber. Also a majority of the people thought that bullying affects people emotionally more than anything else. Another thing that I mentioned in the previous blog post was that there were some people who did not take things seriously.


There are many things that other people have done in the past. For example, there are several websites that allow you to sign a petition to show that you support anti-bullying. There is another website that allows you to make donations or volunteer at different events. If you feel strongly about this issue then you should donate if you want to but you should at least sign the petitions to show your support. I think that these are great ways to get more people informed but there would have to be lots of organization because bullying happens all over.

Another big part of this project is to raise awareness about our issues on our own. Something that I am planning to do to raise awareness is to print out quotes and sayings from other people about bullying and putting them up all over my school. By doing this, when students walk by, they can read it and it would make people have more awareness on my topic. I am not the only one with bullying as my topic. Some of my classmates who have the same topic as I do, also made posters and put them around the school. Since there are many posters and signs up on bullying, it would get more people to be informed. Also these blogs that I posted can also make more people attentive.

Along with raising awareness, we have to create a piece of original content. This means that we can make a video, poster and anything else that is original. For this part, I made a video with quotes and saying from normal people to celebrities. The purpose of using quotes is to show that other people about this issue.

I would like to thank all the people who helped me in my video and was will willing to be included in my video. I would also like to thank my teacher for helping and giving me feedbacks. One person can make a difference, and that person could be you. Thank you for reading all my blogs.

Bullying- Blog #2

Hi, if you have not read my first blog post, my name is Lisa Kang and I’m doing a project on bullying. If you want to find out more about the project in general and want to see my first blog post then click here. In this blog post, I will be talking about some more information that I found out after posting the first blog and it will explain what research I’m planning on doing by myself so that I can compare and contrast it to actual results that other people got.

In my first blog post I mainly talked about the victim of bullying and now I will explain more on the effects it has on other people. When someone thinks about people who are involved in bullying, they usually think about the bully and the person being bullied but it can also have an effect on parents. Some parents of the students are not aware of what is happening to their childs in school. I think that if parents step up and try to check up on how their children are doing in school then more of them would be aware. Also I learned that children act a certain way because of their parents. For example sometimes, parents are also bullying their children but they are not aware of what they are doing because they might think that pushing their children that way will make them do better in school. I think that there are better ways for parents to approach the way they treat and talk to the kids.

After researching more about bullying, I decided to do my own research so that I can see what people around me think about this issue. For my own research, I decided to make a survey and let people fill it out. In this survey there are a few questions, some are multiple choice and some that allow people to explain their thoughts. If you would like to fill out the survey, please click here. You will remain anonymous, and so please just take a minute or two to answer these questions. It would be great if I had a different range of age so that I can see how different people thinks. The final results of my findings will be in the next blog post.


This helps me have a better understanding on bullying because it shows that all the people who took the survey thought that bullying was wrong. Also in the survey, there were a few response who clearly showed that they did not take it seriously because even though they said that bullying was wrong, I could tell that they lied about their age and that showed that they thought it was a joke. Overall, I’m waiting for more results and I would like to see how different people of different ages think about it.

Bullying

My name is Lisa Kang and I’m a student at Science Leadership Academy. In English we are currently working on a project called You and the World. The mission of this project is to find an issue that we are passionate about and research more about it. We are using the research to educate other people about our issues by blogging about it. Another thing that we will do is having debates on our topics so that other people will have a better understanding of them. There are three essential questions in this project. The first one is, “Why is this world issue important to me?” The second one is, “How can I be a global citizen?” Finally, the last one is, “How can change occur?”


The issue that I’m researching for this project is bullying. When we first started to research different issues, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. A few weeks later, we went to go see a movie called, “Bully.” The movie wasn’t the best but it was the fact that it wasn’t that made me want to research more. I was aware that bullying was happening but I didn’t expect think that younger kids would bully each other. When I saw the movie, it showed kids threatening people and I was shocked because when I was younger, all we talked about were games. During the movie, I saw some things that I thought didn’t make much sense. In the movie, many people were aware of bullying happening but they were not trying to help. For example, one of the parents of the victims of bullying knew that her child was being abused and all she did was ask him what happened and she only tried to make a difference when it became something normal for her son. Seeing these events made me want to inform more people and so I decided that bullying would be my topic.

Bullying is when one person or a group of people are being aggressive towards another person of group. There are many types of bullying but they all have the same impact on people. They are verbal, social, physical, and cyber. Verbal is saying or writing mean things and it involves name-calling and threatening. Social is hurting someone’s relationship or reputation and it involves spreading rumors or embarrassing someone else in public. Physical is hurting someone’s body and it involves kicking, punching and many more.


Bullying affects everyone who is around it. It does not just affect the person being bullied but it also has an impact on the bully and even bystanders. The impact that it can have on the person being bullied is that most likely they will be going through depression and it might change the way the act in school or just in general. The impact that it has on the bully is that they are most likely to get into fights and become very abusive in their future. The effect that it has on the bystanders are that it may make them not want them to come to school because they do not want to be in the same position as the victims.


At this point, I’m trying to find different ways to make more people become aware of bullying. I think that it is wrong and if more kids are educated on the different effects it can have on other people then maybe they will not bully other people. Also parent should make sure that they know how their children are being treated at school. I hoped you learned something new and that you would want to help prevent bullying.

Negative Space

​A. What is negative space?

Negative space is the space around an object. It is like a silhouette but the other way around.


B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

I found negative space in my cut out by cutting out all the different shapes out of a half sheet of paper and then I glued them on a full sheet and put all the negatives on one side and all the positives on the other side. I found negative space in my stool drawing by outlining the objects and the shading in the area outside of it.


C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist because it shows them the difference between light and dark.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

I think that seeing negative space does enhance drawings because it shows contrast and it makes the drawings look more complicated and interesting.

Macbeth Creative Piece-Lisa Kang

     For our English project, we had just finished reading "Macbeth". While reading this book we had to choose from Macbeth or Lady Macbeth as a character that we were going to track their journey. The person I chose was Macbeth. I tracked how gaining more power made Macbeth's relationship with Lady Macbeth change. Our first assignment was to write an essay. The next part was for us to come up with something creative to present.

     For my creative part, I decided that I wanted to make something out of clay. There is a road in my project to show that it is like a journey. The clay models are there to show what is happening in each scene. Along the road, there are signs that have the quotes on them. The rod is to show that we're on a journey. The journey begins in the white section and the color white is used to represent that Macbeth is pure in the beginning and that he still has loyalty in him. The nest would be the blue section, in this scene Macbeth had just finished murdering King Duncan, and his quote was talking about how all the ocean cannot wash the blood clean from his hand but instead he will make it red. I painted this section blue to represent the ocean and there was blood all over, showing that it is turning red. Also Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's hand were covered in blood. The next section is painted red because he is becoming more murderous. Also in this section Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are farther apart from each other showing that their relationship is beginning to change. The next section is grey, and that represents that Macbeth is not completely evil yet but is close to it. The clay model of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are separated even more in this part because Macbeth never mentions Lady Macbeth at all. Finally, the last section is completely black to show that Macbeth is pure evil. In this scene Lady Macbeth commits suicide and Macbeth only has a few words dedicated to her. I arranged the characters so that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are on opposite sides of the road. Putting them like this shows that their relationship had been split right down the middle because Macbeth no longer cares about her.

     Throughout the journey, it shows that Macbeth used to depend on his wife to steer him into any direction, but once he gained a lot of power, he began to be independent. Over the whole play, Macbeth grew farther away from Lady Macbeth as shown in my creative piece.

Lisa Kang, Q2, Media Fluency

Technology Project
I positioned all the pictures and text so that when you look at them, your eyes will follow them around in a circle. I used green, yellow, and red for the colors, but I picked a bright shade of them. I used these colors because they are vibrant can catch your attention. The colors are not that close on the color wheel so that it would be easier to read the words. Another thing I did was made the title really big so that it stands out. I also made the "me" in the title bigger than the rest of the words in the title because the slide is about me. For the two pictures I outlined them in yellow so that they would stand out more. I shadowed all the text and pictures so that it would look like they are popping out of the background. I put the picture of the lion on it because lion dance is apart of my life. Also for the picture of the lion, I chose a picture that has the colors red, green, and yellow in it. I tried to make everything big so that people can see it from far away. I left a lot of empty space and did not have may words on it. 
Tech Project 12-7-11
​Reflection:

Some changes that I made were make everything bigger and making the background a solid color. I made everything bigger because if the is a big space and you would want people in the back to be able to see it too and it makes things easier for everyone else. I made the background a solid color because at first I had it fading into a white color and that didn't needed to be like that because it did not match with everything else on the slide. Another change I made was take away my name and make the exclamation point green instead of yellow. I took my name away because it was really unnecessary since I had a picture of me already on the slide. When people look at my slide they can already tell that it is about me and there's no point in having my name there. I also make the exclamation point green because there was no reason for it to be yellow and it would just make people look there right away instead of looking at what is important. I learned that a good slide shouldn't have a lot of words and that making everything big. When things are big, they actually have to be super big and not just a little big. I also learned that the way you arrange everything on the slide really matters and that something that is pleasing to look at is when all the texts and pictures make your eyes rotate in a circle. I also learned that having pictures bleed off of the page makes the slide look more interesting instead of having the full picture there, which makes everything look boring.
