Loren Jenkins
SLA first offical Pep squad
(Dance and Step)
Mentor: Jasmine Taborn
Advisor: Zoe Siswick

As a founder, coach, and choreographer of SLA’s first Pep Squad, I can gladly say it was all worth it. I have been working on this team for my capstone, and own interest purposes. It’s been 2 years working on this club, and I have gained many exposure such as responsibility and patience. In order to be successful in an time consuming club you also learn how to manage time with school work and your personal life. These were just a few skills that I can for sure say better me to help me mature as a young women.

During these two years of conducting pep squad we have became very successful. Both years were full of excitement with shows and contest. Especially, this year 2013 with the step team  and SLA first ever step show which happened to be more than a great success.  I have been preparing for this time for awhile, and the prepping was all worth it. Practices were held on Monday and Thursday or every day if we had a show coming up. They usually last for 2 hours.

As a reflection to this I have created a strong sisterhood between each member and each member has created a sisterhood with each other. I was proud to see the eagerness, and the maturity developed that helped among all of us. I was glad to have brought girls from all ages, and grades from SLA to participate together in a positive youthful cub. I am thankful for all of my supporters, and mentors who were able to guide me while I was riding this road. I am excited to see what I have left here at SLA to become when I am gone.

- This link can be used to help create my timeline. It also has a lot of data that can help me create a good blog.I can put this on a prezi to help make this timeline also. This information is helpful because it also tells me where it begins and the dates. It also helps with the places that it was created in.

-  This website is helpful because not only is the official website, but it also has information that you wouldn’t find on other sites. I will be able to get all of the photos, site names, and much more. It would be able to provide me with years of members information and also photos.

- I know that this is a questionable site to use for certain things, but since I am well knowledge on this topic I think it would be okay for me to use. I can get reports on the challenges they did and also the rewards they have received. They also talk about the community service and the effect they had on society on here.

- I plan to use this to help me getting photos of the presidents. Also for more modern time information of all of the branches they have. I will also get cool facts such as celebrities that are deltas. I can get to know what events that are coming up to. For example, the community service projects that they do, and not just the step shows/competitions they do.

- I would like to use this link because it shows an old style step of the Temple and West Chester Deltas stepping together proudly. This is a good example of stepping in the 1990’s. This can lead to an comparison to how the step then to today. Although, some steps never got old and got carried over there is a difference between the two. This was one of the oldest ones that I liked that I could find.

- This step show took place at Howard University in October of 2011. This is a good video that shows a nice more modern step flow. It is very hardcore compared to the old times. Its more rough, with an edgy bit of loudness. This is just an example of how the different styles are.

The goal of my project was to bring awareness the community and SLA on premature babies. Pre terms births and defects are the leading cause of newborn death in the United States. In Pennsylvania the premature birth is at 11%, majority in young teens and adults. So I wanted to get others informed on the subject in hopes that by 2014 the ratings may potentially decrease.

I chose premature awareness for this project because it is really important to me. There are many family members, including myself, who were born premature, some did not make it and I know how it feels to wait so long for a child to be brought into the world and only to have it be complicated or taken away from you. When I became apart of March of Dimes I got to see the smiles of families and children's faces as they are able to go around in life with something to fight for. I love to fight with them and with the help of many more, we can really create a change for the better.

Mentor: Anthony Betts

Topic Summary: For my capstone I decided to write a short novel. My topic for this book is urban fiction. It's about a young teenage girl who's living with her little brother/sister and has to take care of them. Their mom died, and their dad comes around a few times but doesn't care anything for them. The young teenager girl has to provide for her brother & sister by herself and doesn't have a job. In this book, people will read about this young teenager life and what she goes through.

Project Abstract: I decided to write a short novel for my capstone because one of my goals later on in life is to write a book. I read a lot of urban fiction books and the authors have inspired me to write a book. I decided to write this short novel because it is like a start to my new book. I just hope my short novel can relate to a lot of teenagers like those urban fiction books I been reading related to me.

Topic Summary:
The goal of this project was to bring awareness to player safety in little league football. There has been a lot of controversy in the football world, about player safety lately, so I wanted to dig into it. There are certain techniques in football that prevent players from getting hurt.

Project Abstract:
I chose football safety for this project because it is really important to me. Teaching players how to play football properly is very important. I played football for a long time, and I've seen many people get injured. None of those injuries were as bad as the injury that I saw in my last year playing football. One of my teammates who I knew for over five years suffered a fatal injury in practice. His name was Quadaar White. He passed away a week after his injury, and I'm still to this day shocked that he suffered an injury that caused his death.

Chelsea Janette Smith
Mentor- Senorita Manuel
Advisor- Zoe Siswick
Capstone- Latin Dance

      1. Smith, Chelsea. 31 January 2013. January . Print. The reason I used myself was because I am the one who started this dance group and started doing the choreography. Also I’ve used myself because this topic happens to be close to my heart. This was a way for me to express my culture.

      2. Cruz, Benjamin. Personal Interview. 31 January 2013.
Benjamin Cruz is my uncle on my mother’s side. When I was younger he taught me how to dance salsa. From there it grew into something much more and allowed me to love the dance and everything that came with it.

      3. Smith, Wanda. Personal Interview. 31 January 2013.
My mother of course who has showed me what my heritage is. By making original latin cuisines and speaking her native language around the house. She also has helped me to understand who I am and what it means to be Puerto Rican.

      4. Guzman, Noemi. 31 Jan 2013. Jan . Print.
The reason I used Noemi (my grandmother) is because she always taught me how to stay true to my heritage just like my other family members. She also was the one who help me to become more interested with my heritage by the foods as well as the language. No matter what she was the one who helped me stay true to myself and be able to explore myself even more.

      5. Valentin, Maricza, perf. Maricza Valentin & Jose Valdes Jr. (Latin Rhythms) perform 'Quimbara'. Perf. Jose Valdes. 2011. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov_RxUbhpms>.
In this video it helped me get some ideas together for one of the songs that we will be performing (Quimbara). I came across this video after hearing the song and decided that this will be the perfect thing to dance to. I used this video because the performers are professional and I look up to professional dancers.

      6. 2008. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cehkSxOLNA>.
This was actually the first video that I ever watched of a bachata dance. Once I saw this video I fell in love with the art of dance. I looked at this as a way to really show what a hispanic can do especially through a dance. It was also what inspired to me to explore more through a dance and learn more than what I knew.

      7. La, Alemana, dir. Ataca Jorgie & La Alemana. Dir. Ataca Jorge. 2009. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqHoHR1KPNo>.
In this video this where I learned ways to incorporate a group performance. Also the way that they move together is so graceful. This video also bought my interest because of the thought of being able to perform in front of people. As well as being able to get a positive response from people because they aren’t use to seeing this kind of dance.

      8. Kensinger, Tanja. Internet Chat Interview. 31 Jan 2013.
Tanja Kensinger, better known as La Alemana is a professional latin dancer. She started dancing salsa in 2005 and began dancing bachata in 2008 with her partner Ataca Jorgie. She has continued to grow her love of salsa with her passion of bachata and teaches at one of the best dance schools in Fort Myers, Florida.

      9. Lopez, Jennifer. 31 Jan 2013. Jan . Print.
The reason I am sighting Jennifer Lopez is because she is one of my role models. She has a love for salsa and seeing how much she loved her heritage gave me a look on how much I love mines. She also says how much salsa is important to her and just like its important to her its important to me.

      10. Fuego Dance Co. - Miami Salsa Congress 2012 (Saturday - Performance). 2012. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo5aMlpu2cE>.
Fuego Dance Co is a well known dance group in Philadelphia and the reason I used this specific video is because of how dedicated they are to dancing. In the video you see how the audio stops working but the dancers didn’t give up. They continued to dance and finish their performance and that’s what I like to see especially in a dance. Its takes a lot of determination and commitment to continue to go even when things go wrong.

      11. Fuego Dance Group 3-11/12. 2012. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7h7stm3F9V4>.

In this video I watched it mostly to get a feel of the way people were dancing to the song Promise. While watching this I loved the transition from bachata to salsa and how they were all confident and kept moving. Also I used this video to show my dancers how confident they should always be.

      1. Santos, Romeo, prod. Promise. Perf. Usher. 2011. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3XyWhrZnqE>.
This song is a new bachata original by Romeo Santos and has Usher featured on this song as well. I decided to use this because it has a beautiful beat and makes it a lot easier to dance and catch everyone’s attention. Also this was a very popular song so I know people will love to watch a dance that is done with this song.

      2. Anthony, Marc, perf. Valio La Pena. 2009. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns9YYSqLxyI>.
The song Valio La Pena (meaning “it was worth it”) happens to be a very popular song in my family. Especially when it comes to my Uncle and his love for salsa this happens to be a song that he really enjoys. I figured the best way to show this would be to have a dance for this and represents what this means from my family.

      3. Anthony, Marc, perf. Aguanile . 2007. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nx8URjepjo>.
When we first started to do the Latin Dance group I had went around and asked people what would we be a great performance song. It turned out that a lot of people loved the way Aguanile worked as a performance. I decided the best way to bring my audience attention in is through this song and from there they can get into the mood of the show.

      4. Cruz, Celia, perf. Quimbara. 2010. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxRWQHCSmUg>.

In this song I decided to take time out and just work with the people that wanted to do an extra dance. We decided to mix the song and make it a little shorter than the orginal song and from there work with the fast beats with this song. I figured this will really keep the audience entertained as well as on the edge for wanting more.

For my project I focused on giving back to my SLA community. SLA has given me so much and I have also lived my life by giving back. I based my Capstone off the things I learned while being a part of City Year: City Heroes Program. For my project, I painted different pieces of art work around the school to encourage positive attitudes and to beautify the school. Doing this helps students to have better attitudes and to feel more part of a community that cares. There is three final products that are located around the school. For these pieces I led groups of students in prepping and painting. Through this project I learned more time management skills and got to put my leadership skills to the test to help make the school a prettier place to be. This project also helped me to leave a permanent imprint of me and my beliefs on the school community.

I used this website to help me find prices of supplies that I am going to need during my event. I also used it to get ideas of other materials I am going to need during the event. This helps give me an idea of things to get and the amount of money I need to have prepared before I walk into the store. This helps me be a smart shopper.

I used Lowe’s website to help me find prices of supplies that I know I am going to need during my event. I used two different sites so I was able to compare prices and buy supplies from the cheaper of the two stores, this helped so I was able to spend my money wisely and stay on my budget.

Art news. (2013, Jan 30). Retrieved from http://www.mutualart.com/

I used this site to help me get some basic art ideas that I can add into my murals that I am going to paint. This site talked about different artist and their range of styles. This helped give me different ideas to take when approaching cool art to put on the walls here at SLA.

Jonas, P. (2013, Feb 1). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

For this project, I talked to Pearl Jonas about how she took part in past service projects through City Year Greater Philadelphia. She worked on the Corps team for the Young Hero Program in 2008-2009. I was able to ask her questions about her experience in planning the events and ask her for advice in planning my event.

City year: Give a year, change the world. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://www.cityyear.org/CityYear/Home_New_2011/Home_A_2011.aspx

City Year is a program that I was a part of for four years. Every skill that I am using in this project, I have learned through City Year and the time I spent in their program. They have helped me gain and sharpen these skills in a way that now I am able to do my own type of service project on my own. City Year is my main resource of instruction when it has come to planning and preparing for this event.

Boddy-Evans, M. (n.d.). How to paint a wall mural . Retrieved from http://kiwaniskids.org/en/KKids/Serve/Planning_a_service_project.aspx

This site talked a lot about different ways to paint a mutual on a wall. It gave me ideas and suggestions of ways to approach this task. This is important because I have to make sure the sketches I put on the walls are good enough to be painted in and for people at SLA to take serious in a beautification sense.

Pegan, C. (2013, Jan 20). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

Cheyenne is a good friend of mine, who has great artistic talent. She is going to help me create the sketches of the murals to be painted on the walls. We have sat down and talked about what these sketches should look like and what direction I am heading in by the theme of the sketches.

Utzig, M. (2013, Jan 20). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

Marley is one of my best friends who has great doodling and lettering styles. Along with a mix of small murals, I am also going to be putting up a few quotes, these quotes are going to be written in different types of bubble letters. This is where Marley comes in, she is going to help me design the font and style of this quotes.

Planning a service project. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://kiwaniskids.org/en/KKids/Serve/Planning_a_service_project.aspx

This site has given me pointers and ideas about how to go about planning my service event. This site is a guide to planning service events. This site has touched on things that had slipped my mind and has also retouched on some things that I already knew. By the site doing this, I was able to recognize what things were super important to making this event a success.

Dig Vid Crew. (2013, Feb). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

On the day of my service project, I am going to have a few Dig Vid students come out and film the event. They are helping me create a few minute video that is going to document the event. This is going to capture the service taking place. I am going to use this video during my presentation to show the viewers a little bit of the actual service project happening.
