Abstract:

After my long years here at SLA, I am most proud of my leadership in volleyball. In the beginning of 10th grade I tried out for the volleyball team. It was like I had a natural talent to play. From that day on I fell in love with the sport. Soon after I became a starter. For 11th grade, Coach Hirschfield asked me to be captain. It was definitely an honor to be chosen. However I knew there was a lot of responsibility that came along with being captain.  I did my best for my team and it showed. Hirschfield then made me captain the next year too as well. I was given the responsibility to call incoming freshman, run practices, send emails and etc. Although I am very sad that my last volleyball season is over, moving up to the top division definitely made it worth it. Jokingly, my teammates would play around and say, “I don’t know what we’re going to do without you being captain next year.” I thought about that statement and agreed. No one will be able to feel my shoes next year. However, I came up with a plan to help the volleyball team next year, without being there physically. That’s where my capstone comes in.  My capstone is to create a manual for girls interested in playing high school volleyball. The manual consists of important information, exercises, and etc. Hopefully the manual I create will be used throughout the years to come.

Something you may not know about me is that I love to bake. Cookies, cakes, pies, anything you name it! This is why for my 4th quarter benchmark I chose to do a blog on baking. Throughout the course of several months I have been experimenting with different baking techniques so that I could not only bake the things that I love but also learn how to bake new things that I haven't mastered yet or never baked before. Overall, I learned a lot about the things that I baked/created and hopefully other people can learn something from my capstone as well.

My Capstone.

My Website

Abstract:

I have always been interested in photography, so when it was time for me to choose a capstone, I had already made my mind up. The focus of my project was to learn about an art that is starting to make a come back, known as film photography. I received multiple mini lessons from Mr. Herman and a few other people, showing me the depth of a film camera compared to a digital camera. A photo exhibit in the pool will be coming soon, as I want to showcase what I have learned in an interesting fashion.

Abstract:
There are many questions that people have because not many know about rowing. To help increase the knowledge of rowing and the struggle of being an African-American, female rower, I’ve created a blog. This blog answers general questions non-rowers have, it shares my own personal thoughts on rowing, my growth with rowing, and more. Creating this blog has helped me think back to how I’ve grown as a person thanks to SLA and rowing for providing me a supportive environment and learning what it means to be responsible and have dedication with a positive attitude. My research for this project begun the second I joined PCR back in 2010. I knew nothing about rowing when I first joined and it’s literally taken me 3 years to completely understand rowing.

Bibliography:

1. Kitch, Bryan. "Rowing Related." Rowing Related. Bryan Kitch, 2010. Web. 31 May 2013.

This is a blog that comments on huge rowing events  such as the IRA National Championship Regatta and Dad Vails. Going through this blog helped showed me what is going on in the rowing community outside of PCR's bubble. This also gave me a general idea of what a rowing blog should look like.

2. "Rowing Journal." Rowing Journal. N.p., 2013. Web. 31 May 2013.

3. ScullerX. "The CrossFit Rowing Blog." The CrossFit Rowing Blog. N.p., 24 Feb. 2010. Web. 31 May 2013.

This blog is very similar to my own. However, this one touches more on the actual workouts ScullerX does. This blog encourages me to add video and pictures rather than just words on my own blog. This also showed me how I should type my blog post. Like how to phrase different things.

4. Fay, Devin. "The Bates Rower." The Bates Rower. N.p., 18 May 2009. Web. 31 May 2013.

This is another blog used to influence how I phrase different things in my blog. This blog was a little different than the other blogs I looked at because it allowed a couple of people to post on the blog. So the wording changed between different blog posts. This blog also includes the race results from the regattas Bates competed at. It was interesting because my coach rowed for Bates.

5. "Philadelphia City Rowing." Philadelphia City Rowing. Philadelphia City Rowing, 2011. Web. 31 May 2013.

This is the website for my team. I took some information about PCR from this website whenever I found it hard to explain a certain thing.

6. Peters, Libby. PCR First Season. 2010. video. Youtube, Philadelphia. Web. 31 May 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3O4Og6yla8>.

This video was created by my original coach when PCR first begun. I remember watching this video when it first came out and getting excited by seeing the results from my first year of rowing. This video also makes me happy because I find it inspirational that we've come so far in the past 3 years.

7. Philadelphia City Rowing- Fall 2011. 2011. video. Youtube, Philadelphia. Web. 31 May 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJDXhf3aMek>.

This video was created by the girls novice coach, Annie, last year.

8. Slack, Peter. Philadelphia City Rowing (short).mov. 2012. video. Youtube, Philadelphia. Web. 31 May 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2baUhyG2UqU>.

I remember when this video was created because it was the first time an outside person actually wanted to make a video about us. This was used with a goPro and it only films the boys.

9. "Rowing Terminology." T.C William High School Crew. Alexandria Crew Boosters Club, Inc., 2007. Web. 31 May 2013.

Non-rowers always have questions about rowing terminology because I agree that rowing gets pretty complicated. It was difficult to define each term in my own words without being confusing.

Jennifer Wright Capstone

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Capstone - Siswick on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 9:20 am

I began creating pottery in Junior year of high school and the thought of breaking a piece or it falling to its fragmented end off the end of the counter was a painful idea at best. It takes so much time and love to throw a bowl or cup, trim the foot and fire it twice over. For it to survive as a functioning piece of ceramics was a marvel to me.

All that changed when I began this project.

When I considered what type of project to do, I knew I would enjoy something artistic, especially if it involved my new found love of ceramics

SLA has had a ceramics class for 5 years and over time beginner pieces have accumulated in the studio. Pots, plates, and vases of all colors and sizes were left behind by students to collect dust.

It should be said that I'd only done small scale mosaics in various art classes over the years-- I have never even done any piece of artwork this large. Using the 30-40 pieces left over from the ceramics class, I created a 13.5 sq ft mosaic.

When I work with ceramic I am reminded that nothing is permanent and anything can be repurposed to make something completely new. The concept of recycling or "up-cycling" these pieces was a major concept for this project. I begin a piece by making many designs. I like having options and then choosing the one that speaks to me most. The design that I settled on, the silhouetted skyline of Philadelphia, was first and foremost something that means a lot to me, but also a manageable design for a beginner like myself.

A combination of smashing the pieces with a hammer and throwing them into cardboard boxes allowed me to make usable tiles for the mosaic.

When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of vitality-- I don't feel anything but excitement for this project. Many times, I found myself most productive during the night time. My house was quiet and it felt like I was in my own little world. I never felt tired until I finished what I set out to do in a session of work.

There is a sense of finality that comes with mosaic art because once it is glued and grouted it is permanent and cannot be changed. It was a huge challenge for my perfectionism because I had to sort through many tiles that were less than perfect and choose to use them. It was the beauty of recycling tiles instead of using tesserae- the unusual shape and thickness gives the piece its life.

ABSTRACT
For my capstone I decided to think outside of the box. The beginning of the 2nd quarter a guest speaker from the “Women’s way” organization inspired me to help make a change in the world starting with my community. My goal is to enlighten my community about sex trafficking in the US and heavily emphasize awareness of sex trafficking in Philadelphia. Before doing so I researched the topic and discovered a lot of newfound information. Sex Trafficking targets a specific group of individuals while creating an environment that surrounds the victim that makes it difficult for the victim to make their own decisions. I have decided to specifically enlighten the underclassmen with all of the new research I have found. On December 24, 2012 House Bill 235 mandated the advertisement of the Nation Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline. Since then I have printed out hundreds of flyers and distributed them to my community as well as informing them about the hotline and it's benefits. My senior capstone is to document how well a community can come together in order to achieve a goal of creating a safe environment for victims of sex trafficking.

Annotated Bibliography

Blancarte, Jody. "Anti-Trafficking Program." SafeHorizon (2013): n.pag. Safe Horizon. Web. 31 Jan 2013.

Safe Horizon is an organization that provides alarming facts on sex trafficking in the U.S. It also provides a thorough description of what exactly sex trafficking is. This source is what framed the type of organization we would like to collaborate with.

Vejar, Ellis. "Sex Trafficking In America." For the Sake of One (2012): n.pag. FSO. Web. 31 Jan 2013. <http://www.FortheSakeofOne.org/>.

This source has interactive features that make you view sex trafficking in obscure ways. This source provided me with more personal stories and information on sex trafficking in America. I used these stories in the awareness presentation my partner and I are creating.

Padmore , Theda. "Human Trafficking is an international problem." Active Activism with Global Impact (2013): n.pag. The Defender Foundation. Web. 31 Jan 2013. <http://thedefenderfoundation.org/>.

This organization is the second largest enterprise in the Nation. It targets the most vulnerable victims (ranging from 4 – 19) and provides shelters and other essentials that these girls are deprived of. This source is incorporated into my final project to provide the sense of variety for change. This is one of many organizations that are conveniently available.

Brooke , Axtwell. "Selling American Girls: The Truth About Domestic Minor Sex-Trafficking." Forbes (2013): n.pag. She Negotiates. Web. 31 Jan 2013. <http://www.forbes.com/sites/shenegotiates/2012/12/03/selling-american-girls-the-truth-about-domestic-minor-sex-trafficking/>.

This article is written on how women are “sold” all around the nation. It calculates how much on average these people make and how human trafficking has become so large in the black market. It provides statistics on how these women are taken out of society and given a price. This is just extra information for our presentation.

Glenn , Booker. "Advocacy and Public Policy." Message Agency (2013): n.pag. Women's Way. Web. 31 Jan 2013. <http://womensway.org/advocacy>.

Women’s Way is the organization we are going to partner with. It provides an advocacy program that overall empowers women. Women’s way also works with domestic violence (sex trafficking), which is what our capstone is heavily focused on. They provide clothing and other essential items that the victims of domestic violence (sex trafficking) lack.

Renata , Nicoulin. "The Victims." Polaris Project (2013): n.pag. A World Without Slavery. Web. 31 Jan 2013. <http://www.polarisproject.org/human-trafficking/overview/the-victims?

This source provides inside stories from victims of sex trafficking. It includes how someone is targeted to the struggles of overcoming their obstacles. The stories from the Polaris Project acquire inspiration in the final presentation.

ALEX, WIGGLESWORTH. "Officials discuss why Phill'ys 'poised to become major hub of human trafficking'." Club Metro (2012): n.pag. Metro U.S.. Web. 31 Jan 2013. <http://www.metro.us/philadelphia/local/article/1157934--officials-discuss-why-philly-s-poised-to-become-major-hub-of-human-trafficking>.

This article discusses how Philadelphia must respond to the corrupt actions around us. Statistics show that law enforcements are not the first to respond to cases of sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is popular in most common areas like restaurants, gas stations, and super markets. Philadelphia residents should be more aware and reporting what they see to the authorities.

Loren Jenkins
SLA first offical Pep squad
(Dance and Step)
Mentor: Jasmine Taborn
Advisor: Zoe Siswick

As a founder, coach, and choreographer of SLA’s first Pep Squad, I can gladly say it was all worth it. I have been working on this team for my capstone, and own interest purposes. It’s been 2 years working on this club, and I have gained many exposure such as responsibility and patience. In order to be successful in an time consuming club you also learn how to manage time with school work and your personal life. These were just a few skills that I can for sure say better me to help me mature as a young women.

During these two years of conducting pep squad we have became very successful. Both years were full of excitement with shows and contest. Especially, this year 2013 with the step team  and SLA first ever step show which happened to be more than a great success.  I have been preparing for this time for awhile, and the prepping was all worth it. Practices were held on Monday and Thursday or every day if we had a show coming up. They usually last for 2 hours.

As a reflection to this I have created a strong sisterhood between each member and each member has created a sisterhood with each other. I was proud to see the eagerness, and the maturity developed that helped among all of us. I was glad to have brought girls from all ages, and grades from SLA to participate together in a positive youthful cub. I am thankful for all of my supporters, and mentors who were able to guide me while I was riding this road. I am excited to see what I have left here at SLA to become when I am gone.

This can lead to an comparison to how the step then to today. Although, some steps never got old and got carried over there is a difference between the two. This was one of the oldest ones that I liked that I could find.

Click on the pic above to play video

The goal of my project was to bring awareness the community and SLA on premature babies. Pre terms births and defects are the leading cause of newborn death in the United States. In Pennsylvania the premature birth is at 11%, majority in young teens and adults. So I wanted to get others informed on the subject in hopes that by 2014 the ratings may potentially decrease.

I chose premature awareness for this project because it is really important to me. There are many family members, including myself, who were born premature, some did not make it and I know how it feels to wait so long for a child to be brought into the world and only to have it be complicated or taken away from you. When I became apart of March of Dimes I got to see the smiles of families and children's faces as they are able to go around in life with something to fight for. I love to fight with them and with the help of many more, we can really create a change for the better.

Student Name: Dayona McNeil

Mentor: Anthony Betts

Topic Summary: For my capstone I decided to write a short novel. My topic for this book is urban fiction. It's about a young teenage girl who's living with her little brother/sister and has to take care of them. Their mom died, and their dad comes around a few times but doesn't care anything for them. The young teenager girl has to provide for her brother & sister by herself and doesn't have a job. In this book, people will read about this young teenager life and what she goes through.

Project Abstract: I decided to write a short novel for my capstone because one of my goals later on in life is to write a book. I read a lot of urban fiction books and the authors have inspired me to write a book. I decided to write this short novel because it is like a start to my new book. I just hope my short novel can relate to a lot of teenagers like those urban fiction books I been reading related to me.

Charles Norman

In School Mentor's Name:
Mr. Kay

Topic Summary:
The goal of this project was to bring awareness to player safety in little league football. There has been a lot of controversy in the football world, about player safety lately, so I wanted to dig into it. There are certain techniques in football that prevent players from getting hurt.

Project Abstract:
I chose football safety for this project because it is really important to me. Teaching players how to play football properly is very important. I played football for a long time, and I've seen many people get injured. None of those injuries were as bad as the injury that I saw in my last year playing football. One of my teammates who I knew for over five years suffered a fatal injury in practice. His name was Quadaar White. He passed away a week after his injury, and I'm still to this day shocked that he suffered an injury that caused his death.
