Malik Tlili Capstone

ABSTRACT
For my capstone I decided to think outside of the box. The beginning of the 2nd quarter a guest speaker from the “Women’s way” organization inspired me to help make a change in the world starting with my community. My goal is to enlighten my community about sex trafficking in the US and heavily emphasize awareness of sex trafficking in Philadelphia. Before doing so I researched the topic and discovered a lot of newfound information. Sex Trafficking targets a specific group of individuals while creating an environment that surrounds the victim that makes it difficult for the victim to make their own decisions. I have decided to specifically enlighten the underclassmen with all of the new research I have found. On December 24, 2012 House Bill 235 mandated the advertisement of the Nation Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline. Since then I have printed out hundreds of flyers and distributed them to my community as well as informing them about the hotline and it's benefits. My senior capstone is to document how well a community can come together in order to achieve a goal of creating a safe environment for victims of sex trafficking.

-       4-6 quarts of water

-       Pot

-       Strainer

-       One stick of Land O Lakes Butter

-       2-5 teaspoons of Spice Classics ground Black Pepper

-       3-6 teaspoons of salt.

Steps to making “White Pasta”

  1. Pour 4-6 quarts of water into a pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Place 2 oz of Barilla pasta into the pot.
  3. Stir and add 3-6 teaspoons of salt for flavor.
  4. Once the pasta is tender, strain the water from the pot.
  5. Place one stick of butter into the pot and mix.
  6. Add 2-5 teaspoons of black pepper for additional flavor.
  7. Done!

Analysis

Barilla Pasta: Barilla Pasta derives from the Montebello Food Corp Located in the New York Metropolitan area (Brooklyn). Assuming the products used to make the pasta is made gathered from an agricultural plane (Wheat, flower, eggs etc), Barilla’s product travels a long way. The processed pasta is sent to the food corp. in New York and is then sent 100 miles by bus/plane (burning more energy than it costs to produce to product) to Philadelphia. Barilla pasta contains 200 calories, 2 percent fat, 14 percent total carbohydrate, 8 percent dietary fiber and 7g of protein per serving.

$1.78

http://www.montebellofoods.com/

Land O Lakes Butter: Land O Lakes butter comes from a farmer-owned cooperative that can be found in Arden Hills, Minnesota. This butter is created on many farms and is shipped over 1,171 miles to reach Philadelphia. The butter is made with milk which can spoil easily if not contained in proper refrigeration. The butter claims to be packaged in a “FlavorProtect” wrapper that keeps the rich flavor in the butter from escaping it’s packaging. Land O’lakes butter contains 100 calories, 17 percent fat, 37 percent saturated fat, 10 percent cholesterol (30mg), and 4 percent sodium

$2.73

Morton’s Sea Salt: The salt is the highest quality of sea salt and is harvested from the Mediterranean Sea on Spain's Costa Blanca. The product is then distributed from the Morton International, Inc. located in Chicago, IL. This product travels 765 miles to reach the local grocery shops of Philadelphia, PA. Salt is a self-preserving ingredient so “food miles” surely has no effect on it. Morton’s Sea Salt contains a daily value of 0 calories, 0 percent fat, 23 percent sodium, 0 percent total carbohydrate and 0 grams of protein (Percent Daily Values are Based on a 2,000 calorie diet).

Spice Classics Ground Black Pepper: Spice Classics black pepper is freshly ground from peppercorn plants that are grown in agricultural fields all across America. It is manufactured at the Por Han-Dee Pak Inc. in Cockeysville, MD. This product travels 104 miles to be sold in local supermarkets. Pepper is also self-preserving so “food miles” has no effect on it. This product contains 0 calories, 0 grams of Saturated Fat, 0 milligrams of cholesterol, 0 milligrams of sodium, 0 milligrams of Potassium, 0 grams of Carbohydrate, and 0 grams of Dietary Fiber.

Meal Analysis

If this meal were to be prepared with the need of all ingredients, it will cost $11.85 and approximately 20 minutes of your time. The meal is overall healthy for it avoids high use of carbohydrates and salt in comparison to fast food products. But if this meal were to be eaten everyday, ones health will defiantly be in risk of obesity. Pasta has a high amount of carbohydrate and is eaten with many sauces/cheese products that raise blood pressure. Although it may not be healthy to consistently eat this meal, it is wiser to stick to pasta rather than a Big Mac and Fries. This meal is prepared easily but it is not as convenient as to order a meal through drive through. There is no labor behind the stove and no long wait. In conclusion both sums of money will provide a meal for 8 but one is simply more convenient than the other. Unfortunately Americans are willing to risk their health for a faster and easier way to eat a meal. Until the public realizes this lifestyle is threatening to their health, there will be no progression towards a “healthier America.”

Reflection

The U.S. food system is corrupt in many ways. One of which is the average American’s diet. From personal experience and the research done for this project I tend to notice that the average American diet consists of a lot of salty and sugary foods. Soda is heavily preferred with a meal as apposed to water or other non-chemically carbonated beverages. Also the American diet lacks diversity.  Every meal consists of a type of meat and or bread covered with cheese. The average American diet lacks color, greens, and grains of white rice, fish and or vegetables. It seems to define itself with a restricted type of food that consists of no rich vitamin of minerals that is necessary in a diet.

The U.S. also provides convenient and affordable meals when it comes to “fast-food”.There are now fast food restaurants open 24 hours a day providing large amounts of processed foods for a cheap price. These restaurants not only provide cheap unhealthy food but also quick food. These foods come out of window instead of out of hard work over a stove so why work for food? The issue is that the average American work schedule is intense and the availability of fast food is too convenient to pass up over resting. These issues can all be resolved. I believe that with the simple step of enhancing the quality of food that surround us it will eventually reach the homes of citizens. This will turn the tables and create a culture in which cooking at home will be more convenient than buying fast food. With the first step of introducing alternate access to food (more diners), the U.S. food system will reach the idealistic health level it needs.

Today's Impact by Malik Tlili Q4 Bm

Posted by Malik Tlili in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 11:32 am

*What if the Wright brothers received a toy boat rather than a penaud helicopter as boys.*

  • My Point of Divergence (POD) comes from sources providing the initial interest of flight by the Wright brothers. The interest has came to the wright brothers when they were just boys. I did more research on this topic and found out it was due to a penaud toy that they received as children. I decided to change the penaud helicopter to a toy boat and analyze how this might effect the future.
  • I envisioned the Wright brothers becoming more interested in floating devices that transport people across large bodies of water. From this interest the boys will discover the "Shoes that walk on water" theory by leonardo Da Vinci. They will make this theory into reality and the invention will be beneficial to modern day.
  • I enjoyed creating primary sources. Throughout this whole year we have been collecting primary sources from the internet and it is interesting to create our own for once. This was a relief and enjoyable task for me to complete.
  • The most interesting piece of evidence that i investigated must be leonardo's shoes that walk on water. I found this as a strikingly ridiculous idea but yet possible. I then decided to create a point of divergence involving the shoes rather than exterminating the invention of planes.
  • Technology is a huge component of history. As technology progresses there are new ways to settle on land as well as protect our land. In this specific POD our 2 individuals have taken the concept of walking on water and used it to help guard the nation's borders.
  • Our 2 individuals have taken the concept of walking on water and spread the invention all over the world. This means the invention by these 2 men have been manufactured and distributed in large numbers. This contribution leads to a systemic change that benifits our nations military.
  • I believe one individual's decision can greatly effect history's landscape. As one person makes one decision, others then view the future in a parallel perspective. If this decision were to be slightly different. Every other perspective will change as well. For example the wright brothers were influenced by the penaud helicopter and Da Vinci's perspective of flying. If Leonardo Da Vinci did not have these ideas, the wright brothers will never come across the possibility of flight.
  • This project can certainly be improved in the effect aspect. If i were to have more time i would create more primary courses that are more modern. For example the tragic events such as september 11th or pearl harbor will never have taken place. This will then change the way we view our nation's security.
  • If i were to do this project all over i would jump straight to Da Vinci's view of flight and erase it from history. Even though my final product does not revolve around Da Vinci's view of flight, i believe it will still be further investigated by someone other than the Wright brothers.

¿Que hacen los jovenes en tu pais?

Posted by Malik Tlili in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, May 21, 2012 at 2:30 pm
Por ejemplo: En los Estados Unidos los jovenes jugan fútbol Americano.

My final conversation was about the daily routine of the young people in native spanish regions. Surprisingly the people of the native countries share nearly the same interests as those in the US. In Hispanic regions the young children like to hang out with friends, go to the movie, go to school, go shopping, play soccer/tennis/gym, and go to parties/gatherings. This is nearly exactly the same. The only thing different is the popularity of sports. Baseball, Basketball and football are very popular sports in the US. Soccer is the most popular sport in just about every other region other than the US.

¿Que es las marcas de moda en tu pais?

Por ejemplo: En los Estados Unidos la gente llevan Armani Exchange y Nike.

My 4th Blog post revolved around the types of clothing is popular in native spanish regions. I posted the question "que es las marcas de moda en tu pais", and got a few valuable responses. The majority revolved around the main brands worn in the region. The types of clothing is very similar to those worn in the United States. They wear many sporty clothing such as Nike, Adidas and other athletic clothing apartments. This seams similar for the majority of clothing brands bought in the US are those of the athletic department.

¿Que se considera un insulto a la gente de tu país?

Posted by Malik Tlili in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 10:22 am
These answers have derived from the ITALKI website. After reading the answers given to my question i have made a connection between the US region and Hispanic regions. Both are insulted when a person says a derogatory comment regarding loved ones or respected people. Any comments made about one's family usually result in the person becoming insulted. Also both regions share the same sort of pride in their masculinity. The men in both countries are highly insulted when another person denounces a mans strength or "manly behavior". This is the same for women who are derived from their feminine characteristics. These similarities seem common due to direct commentary. In spain one of the most offensive ways to insult a person is to make a generalization of their lifestyles. Making jokes about the low waged salaries that natives make or their growth of population will cause the locals to reach their boiling point. Any generalizations about the native people is the most effective way to insult a hispanic native.

Priopos En Español

Posted by Malik Tlili in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 10:04 am
For the remanding conversations i have decided to use an alternative conversation website. It is called ITALKI and it resembles a social networking site that simply posts questions that are answered by other members of the site. For my second topic i have chosen to learn "pick up" lines that are used in hispanic regions. I have received numerous amounts of feedback on the site. 1.

My favorite pick up line is the fourth one. It says, "if kissing were a sin, i'd be happy in hell". I found this adorable and beneficial. It is not a "lame" pick up line and the meaning is not offensive. I believe that one day in the future i will use this pick up line.

American Dream Transition

Posted by Malik Tlili in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 12:37 pm
The modern day generalization of the American dream consists of Home own-age, financial stability, and luxurious materials. .

The transition from the modern day american dream and future american dream will be the effect of a brutal war that causes all of technology to be destroyed. the people of the future will live like the first people who roamed earth. This will cause the dedication to finding religious explanations to their existence. The new American dream is to prolong knowledge of the human existence.

  • Post-Conversation

·       I spoke with 2 persons originating from Spain on the language learning website. One named Karl Relher and the other named David Suarez.

·       I haven’t asked so many questions about the person’s life rather than the language. I focused on learning how to say a few quality jokes in Spanish as well as learn the types of jokes are used.

·       This conversation benefited me in many ways. I tended to think about what type of conversation I will most likely have in the future and humor is my field of interest. Knowing jokes in Spanish will be an icebreaker for meeting new people.

·       I did not think I would find quality jokes from these conversations but they turned out to be pretty funny.

·       I would need to improve on asking what I want to know with proper grammar. It seems that many of the people were confused of what I was asking for. Conversation Partners:

Libby Montana Asbestos Contamination

Posted by Malik Tlili in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 12:25 pm
(A) The researching process of the infographic came along quit easily. We found many reliable sources providing the main causes to the contamination, what products were being experimented, who was harmed, what medical effects did the contamination cause, and how many people were harmed. These were all valuable components to the brief understanding of the Libby Montana contamination.
 (B) When putting the infographic together we came to a few issues. The information provided about our topic revolves around air contamination. Air is a hard component to measure for it is hard to find a proportional measuring unit to use. Therefore we were unable to show how much contamination there was exactly. But there were several sites the explain in detail the contamination taking place. The dust covering the cars and buildings in the town was a good visual.
 (C) Next time i would consider completing the infographic alone. This is because when explaining data in brief terms each of our group members had their own ideas. so when attempting to combine our ideas on how to represent the data, we just wound up splitting the poster into three different sections. So each section has its own "style/Idea".
 (D) Our final product attempts to hint on each of the 10 infographic tips. We were attempting to make the infographic beneficial to those unaware about the topic but as well as entertained with the information. This helps the person viewing the infographic to come to a strong understanding of the topic without having to think to hard about the data represented.

Malik Tlili, Symone Smith NHD Presentation

Posted by Malik Tlili in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 10:45 am
Our final Product revolves around the Declaration of Independence. The events taking place during this time period involving the separation from Britain were Revolutionary. Therefore we chose this topic to Connect to the NHD theme. The Declaration also needed many revisions and alterations. This Leads to the theme of reformation. Symone and I found these reformations interesting for there must be reasons behing the revisions. We therefore Created this site containing the Analysis of these revisions as well as other key information pertaining the Declaration.

What causes systemic and individual change?

Posted by Malik Tlili in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Systemic change is something that is inevitable. There are many details that pertain to systemic change, but they will change regardless. It takes an individual to set a trend to cause either positive or negative change. In this scenario, we focused on individuals who attempted to lead a systemic change. For example, during the time that Teddy Roosevelt was in office, he wanted to stop the overwhelming amount of monopolies. These monopolies were created by large companies and trusts. These companies used devilish ways to get money. They would force their buyers into purchasing something they did not want in order to get something they did want. In our visual presentation, we focused on Barack Obama and Theodore Roosevelt. They both wanted to create change in the economy and government. Theodore wanted to spread money around rather than companies hogging hard earned money from citizens. Barack Obama is trying to balance out the percentage comparison of high class to low class citizens. Initially, the gap between rich and poor in America is not only devastating but continually increasing. Obama is an individual wanting to create systemic change.

1. Explain your choice of presentation format.

Katherine and i chose to use a poster format for it is visually appealing as well as informative. we decided to leave a lot of words out and compare the repeating events of history through 2 quotes. One from our present day president, Barack Obama, as well as a quote from a more historic president, Theodore Roosevelt. Both of these individuals were in the process of creating systemic change involving the nation's economy.

2. Two sentences about your answer to the essential question.

Systemic Change is a process that can be voiced through one individual, but the numbers behind the individual must be a majority. Systemic change is usually for the benefit for the majority's needs.

Jonathon

Posted by Malik Tlili in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 12:36 pm

October 13th, 2434

He lies there. Blood gripping the outline of his body, bold red.

His eyes.

Both eyes open.

His left eye had rotated to the left. About 1.5 centimeters.  His right eye rotated up by 1 centimeter, and to the right about 1. His brain lies 2 feet away from his skull.

Still functioning.

His brain sends waves through the eyes of the body. The brain begins to search back through the memory cells to recall the events. In fatigue, it goes straight to day 1, when the brain developed.

October 13th, 2433

Jonathon awakes in his bedroom perfectly dosed with sleep and energy for the day. He pushes on the glass box surrounding his bed. The top opens at first touch but Jonathon was in a hurry. He was in a hurry to go to Enhancement Facility. He wanted to be on time to be able to receive his award. He stands on the Transportation Apparatus and selects turbo. Jonathon had no time to waste. As he stepped off the TA he caught a glimpse of himself. Jonathon wouldn’t waste time on anything except for one. And that was himself. He examines himself in the mirror and gives a quick wink. Jonathon is very conceited and has the truth to back it up. “Oh hey Kayla. Yea yea I know its big. I won it just for you”. He says in confidence. He then looks down and thinks of what can go wrong. He can either win the 32nd grade science fair trophy and get the girl, or loose the fair to his nemesis Kevin Muleon. He then shakes off the thoughts reassuring himself that his project will definitely win for he has been studying all year and the neurologic vitamin tablets were a key to his success. He then preceded two steps forward and 5 steps to the right. The halls were narrow and short. He approaches a clear cylinder about 10 feet in height and can fit 2 average people in width. He dials the machine to “light breakfast “ and enters the cylinder. He steps out and gathers his belongings for the Fair and flees out the door.

As he stepped on the TA he began to feel light headed. His vision came to a blur. His blood pressure was on the rise. His heart racing.

December 30th, 2433

Jonathon’s parents came to visit him at the hospital. His mother. Short and pudgy. Her complexion so pale as the white cows Jonathon learned about in Enhancement Facility in grade one. Since that day Jonathon called his mother “moo-ma”. But today. Her cheeks were a soft yellow. Her eyes low and sweat covered her face.

“Jonathon is diagnosed with bran cancer…we are not sure exactly…Creutzfedlt… no cure…sorry for your loss…” The voice of the doctor played throughout her mind as she slowly left the hospital. There was no hope for her son. His disease is found one in every million persons and there is no cure. The protein in the brain mixed with unwanted prions causing his brain to slowly deteriorate. One cell killing 10 every minute.

January 1st, 2434

            Jonathon has entered a coma.

January 2nd, 2434

Jonathon awakes from his coma. His eyes have changed from a brown to a light hazel. The diagnostics made by the doctor turned out to be wrong. Actually, it was a complete opposite. Jonathon’s brain cells were actually developing and reconstructing themselves. He develops brain cells 10 times faster than an average human. He bursts out of the wires hooked onto his body. As he arose from the bed his face showed no expression. The veins on his temples were pulsating. His body moving but not with his intention. His mind has taken complete control of the body. With one glance Jonathon changes the walls in the room to dust. His body then moves towards the control center of the city.

As he levitated across the city windows shattered, buildings were collapsing and the ground shook. The frequencies sent from the brain have taken an inhumane toll. As he approached the control center his eyes changed from hazel to clear. The brain was attempting to reach the city’s control tower. The tower was capable of communicating on a global level. Once the tower was under the brains possession he can control the world. The amount of destruction the brain caused left no chance for any army to stop him. Within minutes the brain used the tower to gain complete control of all humans in the world.

February 3rd, 2434

It has been one month. The brain is commanding the world and reconstructing the environment, creating monuments devoted to Jonathon.

October 13th, 2434

Jonathon’s brain continues to develop. In size and in strength. Jonathon’s brain is growing by the minute. Jonathon’s skull was not. The brain soon began to push against the top of the skull. As the pressure increased Jonathon began to feel pain. Every bone, every nerve, and every muscle in his body felt as though electrocuted simultaneously. The top of his head began to tear starting from the back of the neck to his far head. Jonathon falls to the ground and his brain rolls out of his skull. The brain has exactly 24 hours to stay functioning. With no legs or arms there was no possibility for the brain to find an alternative body.

This experience has encouraged me to extend my use of spanish for not only in-class purposes but also to comunicate with friends outside of class who speak spanish. This experience helped me comprehend and use spanish in a forma of which i use a language everyday. Due to the constant frequency of usage on face book i am able to apply my spanish to things i see and say every day. like for example likes on a status. when listing who likes the status in spanish "A" is before all the names. also when i like a status the "a" changes to "a ti y". this is just an example of one of the many statements used on Facebook that i know know how to say in spanish.

The Entire Project: https://sites.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/don-t-have-a-cow-vote-by-mail/

    • How did your group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
      - Our group wanted to do voting my mail for a couple reasons. We wanted to find a system that has been introduced already somewhere in the nation so we can base our information on true events. We chose voting by mail also because it covers most of the difficulties people encounter with voting. Voting by mail eliminates the excuses for not voting.
    • 11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?
      - The role an individual has in change is the ability to assemble and create protest. if one individual works up the courage to decide to make a change in the system of which people fallow, then they have that ability with proper assembly and protest.
    • How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
      - My understanding of the electoral process has changed completely. i had no idea that the voter turnout was so low that barley a fourth of the nation as a whole votes. this leads me to believe that the decisions made are not balanced and this makes it less viewed as a democracy.
    • How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
      - Marketing techniques require the message to connect straight to the viewer. The marketing campaign should include simple and broad issues that are adressed that many people can relate to. then at the end of the campaign you offer to help fix the dilemmas which most of the time leads the viewer to agree.

"648 filadelfia"

Posted by Malik Tlili in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 8:49 am
This project is a song about where im from. it revolves more around the city i am raised in and the few things in detail that i do/am involved in when in my neighborhood. Throughout the assembly of this projects i learned a few things. i learned how similar the people in cuba and possibly other hispanic areas suffer from poverty and other issues. we are similar because america has issues too. and both america and cuba express their ordeals throughout art/music. i proud of the the beat of the song and how i used a small amount of given requirements to create a song about where im from. if i were to change something about my project it would be the length of it and the quality of the audio. i would make the song longer and more interesting. Also use better options to enhance my audio.

Mtlili Immigration Visualization

When viewing the data collected as a group a few things came to mind. When thinking of America I always thought it was the best place to be no matter where you’re. As in the luxury of living in America was better than any foreign country no matter what occurs in America. I am familiar with the great depression but always thought it was over rated. It turns out when the great depression occurred it was the greatest decrease of incoming immigrants in time.
The way we constructed our visualization was that it would represent how time affected the growth of America. What we did was display each decade in the shape of a circle, the size of the circle represents the amount of immigrants in coming to America that decade. Within each circle is an explanation of why this may have happened. The circles leading up to the most modern circle with the largest number of immigrants seem to be increasing. Therefore the lifestyle in America is increasing. This leads me to believe that within the next 2 decades the amount of immigrants will increase.
The most challenging part of working in a group would be deciding on how the visual would be constructed. We all had different ideas that we each wanted to project. Then we had to find a way to combine our ideas in order to satisfy the whole group. It wasn't that difficult but we were able to accomplish the visual without encountering dilemmas. If I were to do something differently to the visualization I would keep the number of the immigrants in the circle. The information in the circle on the reasoning would be outside the circle attached to each circle with a line. This would make it easier to read the information.

refrán : me llamo es rosaro:
y el nombre de me pero es dinero

my refrán is short and it communicates with the listeners because it is simple and those are the only two things needed to know about myself "Roasaro" i am happy with the attractiveness of my refrán. it pulls listeners in and makes the song interesting. i would like to check the spelling and maybe make my refrán longer. the thing that was difficult about writing my refrán is thinking of the correct way to say what i want.

I am from ..

Posted by Malik Tlili in English 3 - Rami on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 2:33 pm
I am from the thick,

Smoke filled air choking your lungs.

I’m from the there’s no tomorrow,

So today it must be done.

I am from the walls that scream,

The floors that hold tears,

I’m from the roller-coaster life.

That never has one theme.

I am from the rough, dry rocky ground

That grazes the sol of your feet like sandpaper.

I’m from the over salted food

When everything tastes like a caper.

I am from the cry and die

The gay no way

no shame to the name.

or it will be the last you say.

I am from the microphone with no sound.

i am from the guitar that’s missing one string.

I am from the house that has no doors.

I am from a some sort of some thing

This final product is a simulation of the road of my life. In the process of constructing this project i came across many things i enjoyed doing. i believe this was a well constructed project that opens up the varieties of ideas we can do. i enjoyed creating the characters and going over the key points of my life. in opposition of things being fun i cam e across many difficulties. the project was time consuming according to the format of which i chose. the characters took a while to create but the product was successful. if i were to redo the product i would put actual pictures of myself in the project instead of using characters.

Alchemy of Language

Alchemy of Language

I’m new to my school and it’s only been a few months. No one really knows that much about who I am or about my ethnic background. I always dread having projects or class discussions about language or ethnicity because when people see me they just see another “white Italian” like all the rest of the kids in my class. I looked like everyone and spoke with the normal South Philly accent. I’m really Tunisian, which is in North Africa along the Mediterranean Sea.  It is traditionally an Arabic country but being so close and raided by the neighboring countries we have a European culture. Our langue, which is Tunisian, isn’t one specific language. It is a mixture of French, Italian, and Arabic. I don’t have the traditional African or Arabian complexion so everyone assumes I’m just white. I enjoy being seen as the same as everyone because it makes me feel as though I fit in, so I don’t really express who I really am. I just stay away from the subject without having to encounter the situation. But it’s difficult having foreign parents who are more comfortable speaking their native langue, so when they call I must speak to their way of understanding.

“Hello”

“Miko, Ca Va?”

“Yes mom, inti Ca va?”

“mm. fama pizza fil cucina”

“Ok Mom.”

“Ok chao”

“Bye”

My Mom asked are you ok? I replied yes are you ok? She says yes and tells me there is pizza in the kitchen. I reply ok attempting to avoid any further conversation with my mother and stay away from comments from my friends. Unfortunately there is always that one person who over hears the conversation and begins questioning.

“What was that?!”

“What was what?” I said pretending to not know what is going on.

“On the phone what was that? What are you speaking”

“Not sure what your sayin”

I am then put under the spotlight growing hot and sweaty becoming uncomfortable as if being the unknown species that was just discovered in America.  I then become defensive trying to get out of the conversation.

“You were like ahjibkcnojbdsijb bye”

“oh I though you knew? I’m Tunisian”

“whats that”

“French, Italian and Arabic. Its in North Africa, right across from Italy”

“Ooh, I thought you were Chinese for a second lol”

“Yeaa, I’m part Italian not full blooded tho”

“Ooh”

“Yea”

I bring up the reference that I am “part Italian” to bring a connection to everyone else and to bring everything back to thinking I’m “normal” again. I also bring up how Tunisia is “right across from Italy” to show how we aren’t so different. It works sometimes but others just keep believing that I’m a foreign weirdo. I can connect to James Baldwin’s view on what language is and how it is introduced. He believes it is “…an alchemy that transformed ancient elements into a new language.” My language bonds 3 different types of ethnicities and in my opinion 3 is better than 1. Over time language is constructed and altered in many different ways. My language is one of those changed over time. Every Language is unique and according to who you are you may use that language in a unique way. Tunisia bonds French, Italian, and Arabic. It is not one standard language but it is still the way of communication in that country. Language is one of the unique ways of discovering someone’s identity. There are some languages that have been changed overtime and are difficult to decipher and connect to a certain background. When back tracking the alchemy of language, the identity becomes more clear. Your outer appearance and complexion may not tell your true identity, but language can reveal the actual origin of a person.
