Chelsea Janette Smith
Mentor- Senorita Manuel
Advisor- Zoe Siswick
Capstone- Latin Dance

      1. Smith, Chelsea. 31 January 2013. January . Print. The reason I used myself was because I am the one who started this dance group and started doing the choreography. Also I’ve used myself because this topic happens to be close to my heart. This was a way for me to express my culture.

      2. Cruz, Benjamin. Personal Interview. 31 January 2013.
Benjamin Cruz is my uncle on my mother’s side. When I was younger he taught me how to dance salsa. From there it grew into something much more and allowed me to love the dance and everything that came with it.

      3. Smith, Wanda. Personal Interview. 31 January 2013.
My mother of course who has showed me what my heritage is. By making original latin cuisines and speaking her native language around the house. She also has helped me to understand who I am and what it means to be Puerto Rican.

      4. Guzman, Noemi. 31 Jan 2013. Jan . Print.
The reason I used Noemi (my grandmother) is because she always taught me how to stay true to my heritage just like my other family members. She also was the one who help me to become more interested with my heritage by the foods as well as the language. No matter what she was the one who helped me stay true to myself and be able to explore myself even more.

      5. Valentin, Maricza, perf. Maricza Valentin & Jose Valdes Jr. (Latin Rhythms) perform 'Quimbara'. Perf. Jose Valdes. 2011. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov_RxUbhpms>.
In this video it helped me get some ideas together for one of the songs that we will be performing (Quimbara). I came across this video after hearing the song and decided that this will be the perfect thing to dance to. I used this video because the performers are professional and I look up to professional dancers.

      6. 2008. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cehkSxOLNA>.
This was actually the first video that I ever watched of a bachata dance. Once I saw this video I fell in love with the art of dance. I looked at this as a way to really show what a hispanic can do especially through a dance. It was also what inspired to me to explore more through a dance and learn more than what I knew.

      7. La, Alemana, dir. Ataca Jorgie & La Alemana. Dir. Ataca Jorge. 2009. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqHoHR1KPNo>.
In this video this where I learned ways to incorporate a group performance. Also the way that they move together is so graceful. This video also bought my interest because of the thought of being able to perform in front of people. As well as being able to get a positive response from people because they aren’t use to seeing this kind of dance.

      8. Kensinger, Tanja. Internet Chat Interview. 31 Jan 2013.
Tanja Kensinger, better known as La Alemana is a professional latin dancer. She started dancing salsa in 2005 and began dancing bachata in 2008 with her partner Ataca Jorgie. She has continued to grow her love of salsa with her passion of bachata and teaches at one of the best dance schools in Fort Myers, Florida.

      9. Lopez, Jennifer. 31 Jan 2013. Jan . Print.
The reason I am sighting Jennifer Lopez is because she is one of my role models. She has a love for salsa and seeing how much she loved her heritage gave me a look on how much I love mines. She also says how much salsa is important to her and just like its important to her its important to me.

      10. Fuego Dance Co. - Miami Salsa Congress 2012 (Saturday - Performance). 2012. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo5aMlpu2cE>.
Fuego Dance Co is a well known dance group in Philadelphia and the reason I used this specific video is because of how dedicated they are to dancing. In the video you see how the audio stops working but the dancers didn’t give up. They continued to dance and finish their performance and that’s what I like to see especially in a dance. Its takes a lot of determination and commitment to continue to go even when things go wrong.

      11. Fuego Dance Group 3-11/12. 2012. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7h7stm3F9V4>.

In this video I watched it mostly to get a feel of the way people were dancing to the song Promise. While watching this I loved the transition from bachata to salsa and how they were all confident and kept moving. Also I used this video to show my dancers how confident they should always be.

      1. Santos, Romeo, prod. Promise. Perf. Usher. 2011. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3XyWhrZnqE>.
This song is a new bachata original by Romeo Santos and has Usher featured on this song as well. I decided to use this because it has a beautiful beat and makes it a lot easier to dance and catch everyone’s attention. Also this was a very popular song so I know people will love to watch a dance that is done with this song.

      2. Anthony, Marc, perf. Valio La Pena. 2009. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns9YYSqLxyI>.
The song Valio La Pena (meaning “it was worth it”) happens to be a very popular song in my family. Especially when it comes to my Uncle and his love for salsa this happens to be a song that he really enjoys. I figured the best way to show this would be to have a dance for this and represents what this means from my family.

      3. Anthony, Marc, perf. Aguanile . 2007. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nx8URjepjo>.
When we first started to do the Latin Dance group I had went around and asked people what would we be a great performance song. It turned out that a lot of people loved the way Aguanile worked as a performance. I decided the best way to bring my audience attention in is through this song and from there they can get into the mood of the show.

      4. Cruz, Celia, perf. Quimbara. 2010. Film. 1 Feb 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxRWQHCSmUg>.

In this song I decided to take time out and just work with the people that wanted to do an extra dance. We decided to mix the song and make it a little shorter than the orginal song and from there work with the fast beats with this song. I figured this will really keep the audience entertained as well as on the edge for wanting more.

The Scarlet Letter and Juno Project

Link to video http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11615626/DSCF4321.AVI

After reading the Scarlet Letter and watching Juno I decided to make my creative piece a dance. At first I was going to make a pregnant stomach out of paper maché, with a Scarlett A to represent how they looked at pregnancy both through the book and through the movie. But then I began to realize there was more to these stories than just portraying pregnancy as it was portrayed in this story. I then decided to look at the story as it changed over time and what it has become.

By making a dance I was able to portray the time that has changed and how everybody was portrayed but in a more urban way. In the dance my partner (Loren Jenkins) and I decided to do a mix of 3 different songs. We choose to do Unfaithful by Rihanna, Daddy’s Little Girl by J. Cole and the last song was Save Me by Nicki Minaj. Through these three songs it shows how overtime there was something changing in between each stage in their life. Not only that but this also shows the relationships that has changed overtime and what they would have concluded to if this was done in our time and not back in the 18th century.

In the first song Unfaithful by Rihanna this is almost like the start of the book. The  song talks about how a women kept running to another man and wasn’t happy with the man she was with. It also talks about how she knew she was wrong and kept betraying his trust. This song related to the book because it starts off with Hester who we assume went to jail for adultery.

Then the next song that is played is Daddy’s Little Girl by J.Cole. The reason this song was chosen was to represent Pearl but in a more urban way. The book states multiply times that she was a difficult child as well as she wanted to know who her father was. In this song its a rap representation of how the child would have been seen now.

In the final song Save Me by Nicki MInaj this song was used as an ending for both the movie and the song. In this song she says she needs to be saved because she can feel herself giving up. In the movie Juno felt like she had no choice but to give up because she thought Vanessa was no longer going to go through with the adoption. So as soon as she wrote the letter to let Vanessa know Juno was still in it she was saved from that.

Through this project I think making a dance is a well representation of what I wanted to do through this project. It not only shows how creative we can be with such a hard text like the Scarlet Letter but it also shows how creative we can be and have more than just a project on paper. Another thing that our creative piece should be able to show is the movement we do and how this relates to one of the themes we decided to portray in our dance.

Keeping the Patriot Act

Posted by Chelsea Smith in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 11:07 pm

After eleven years of having the Patriot Act the question raise is it still needed. People have come to say that the Patriot Act is not needed anymore with the fact that nothing else as big has happened since 9/11. But then again without the Patriot Act can anything like 9/11 happen again. In one of the articles it states that the world is worse then what it used to be, because of the way that technoklogy has advanced and much much more. And with this said the article, There's Still a Need for the Patriot Act, says that defense technology has not yet been able to keep up. One more point that is brought up that is well thought out is the fact that even if the Patriot Act wasn't needed we still need at least part of it or some aspects of it.

With even the thought that something like this may be able to happen again the Patriot Act will be an important aspect to keep in our lives. As previously stated before jut because nothing has happened since 9/11 doesn't mean nothing can't happen. For example if suddenly the Patriot Act was no longer needed and then there was another attack what will be needed to do? Also what if survellience wasn't as strict and then something a little less server happened? Will the Patriot Act be put back in place or will there have to be another act that was made.

Another thing that came to mind was something after reading the article on the 9/11 commission report. After reading it and discovering that all these men that hijacked the plane were able to get ont he plan so easily it was just amazing. They had no problem going through security or needing their baggage checked. Now that we have th Patriot Act and if it was taken away it would feel as though we are loosing some of our security. Now a days people would least expect this to happen again because of how well our security is. So by taking away this act its also taing away our sense of security.

Blog Post 1 Enemy of the State

Posted by Chelsea Smith in American Government - Herman on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 5:59 pm
This was my first time watching this movie and from the first time seeing this I was amazed at just how much the government will try and get everything and anything they want. I feel as though the government has so much power that they abuse the power. If they need something instead of having a warrant they can parade a person's life with or without consent.

With the citizens in this movie I think about how much Will Smith had to do just to try and stay safe. From the moment they broke into his house until the moment everyone was killed in the restaurant. When I think about how our privacy as a citizen is I think that we really don't have any privacy. Just from our technology the government was able to tap into Bobby's (Will Smith) life and find everything about him and more. Between his family, personal life, work, and any other aspect. After seeing this movie it made me think about how much the government does have on our lives and everything they can do. When I think about it our privacy really isn't private. I think that the government shouldn't be able to get such easy access to our lives. I feel as though it should remain our private life until the government needs reason to even try to dig into our life like that. Another point I want to make is how corrupt the government can be. All this running around that Bobby had to do in order to try and get his life back together is because of something the government did and was trying to remain hidden. So in that aspect the government is just as hard to be trusted with so many corrupt people in it.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

Gustavo and Nestor were two different people that I talked to
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

From both people I learned that I am able to keep a conversation going and that it is not that hard to be able to talk spanish with multiple people at one time as long as your focused.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

I didn't have a specific goal for goal 5 I just wanted to enhance my spanish and I was able to do that by talking to more than one person at a time.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

Something that I think that I did well with all the blog post and especially the final blog post since I spoke with two people at a time.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

I spoke with Looghan de Rubens from Mexico.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

While talking to this guy he spoke in english to help practice his english. He also told me a little bit about himself, for example he worked in an office.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

In general my goal was to enhance my spanish and be able to hold a conversation with someone. The more I chat with these people the closer I think I am to this goal.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

Something I have done well that I continue to do is keep a conversation going as well as being able to interact more with the person I am having a conversation with. I had more with this person but something happened with my computer and I lost the other conversation me and this person had, but I uploaded everything that I do have.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

    - I can't remember his name and I didn't take a screen shot of his name but it was something very weird.

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

    - From talking with this person I learned that a conversation can go either way wether its in a good way or bad way. He did help me how to tell someone that I don't want to talk to them and be just fine with that
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

-In general my personal goals are to improve my spanish and I believe the more people I talk to the better my spanish does seem to get.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

    - As usual just being able to keep the conversation going is one of my strong spots.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

    - I spoke with Enrique Matos and I picked him because he is from Peru and is trying to learn Spanish, as well as that he is 19 so close to our ages.

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

    - I learned that he loved to eat and enjoys anything that is good, but he can not cook himself. He also knows how to keep a conversation going.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

    - I think I primarily enjoyed talking to him because he knows how to talk about something that I enjoy myself. He is able to keep this conversation going and can say more than just the little things

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

    - I think I did well responding to him and asking him questions in order to keep this conversation going. We were able to have a civilized conversation and I know for a fact that this was the best person I talked to so far.

    - I spoke with a woman name janet and I chose her because she was also trying to learn spanish

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

-I didn't get to learn much from her because once I said that I was in school she logged off the chat.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

    -
I was able to get a conversation started even though this person logged off the chat, and I'm going to continue to chat with people and help bring my confidence up of speaking spanish.

My goal is to be able to be comfortable having a conversation with someone.

-Have a conversation with someone and ask them about what they did that day. If I can be comfortable and keep the conversation then I think I will be successful.

-I would talk to my Columbian friend who is fluent in spanish and will be able to tell me what I need to improve on.

Sports

Chelsea Janette & Dréquan Taylor

Process:

When the project first came about to us my partner, Dréquan, and I decided to do the Revolution on sports. We wanted to see how far along sports have come and what exactly what happened with the integration of sports. Starting this project last quarter for a benchmark we just got the surface of sports and how the integration worked in sports.
By doing the NHD (National History Day) we were able to go deeper into the topic that we had choose. As the deadline came closer and closer to being done we decided to make a video that shows the three R's for sports, Revolution, Reform, and Reaction. We were able to learn about how African Americans were able to play along side caucasians and that made way for everyone else.
Doing this project we first started by getting more information on the topic. We looked onto NBA.com, and NFL.com for videos that could show how diverse the teams have become. Among putting our movie together we wanted a song that could put people in that game mode, so that's were the song came from. In the video we have a lot of slides that show facts as well as pictures that represent each person in the slide. Not only that but we also put in a clip to show now how African Americans and Caucasians are playing side by side. The process was a long one but at the same time it was an interesting one. We got to learn about people that no one else really knows about and we alos learned that Jackie Robinson wasn't the only one that made a change in history for sports.

Jackie Robinson. 1947. Photograph. Brooklyn. Google. Web. 6 Jan. 2012. <http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1>.
This is a photo of Jackie Robinson in his first game in MLB(Major League Baseball). Jackie was running from 3rd base to home plate. His teammate hit the ball deep down mid-field and Jackie was running home to score. He was the fastest player on his team. This could be helpful to my project because i can use this on the website, when talking about who he was, how he broke the color line, and what he meant to the sport of baseball.

TWO SOURCES IN ONE
-Johnson, Jack. "Jack Johnson." Photograph and quote. 1. n. page. Web. 10 Jan. 2012. <http://bioscopic.wordpress.com/2010/07/03/lives-in-film-no-4-jack-johnson-2/>.
In this article there are pictures along with a quote that Jack Johnson had said from when he fought Jim Jeffries. In this article it also shows how Jack Johnson was the first black man “movie star.” With all the fighting he was doing he was put on television and movies so that it would be broadcast. Also this article has information on his early life and what has happened since he was born to him defeating the retired Jim Jeffries.

I’m Jack Johnson. Heavyweight champion of the world.

I’m black. They never let me forget it.

I’m black all right. I’ll never let them forget it.

Jack Johnson

Secondary Sources:

- "Today in History: April 15." The Library of Congress American Memory, 10 Mar. 2009. Web. 4 Jan. 2012. <The Library of Congress American Memory>.

http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/today/sources.html

This source is talking about Jackie Robinson, and how he broke the “color line”. Before Jackie Robinson there were no African-American professional players, that played along-side any Caucasians players. There was always a separation between the Caucasians and every other race. MLB (Major League Baseball) was where the Caucasians competed against each other in baseball. Jackie Robinson first competed in the Negro American League before being signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers. It will help in my project, because i can talk about how he “broke” the “color line” which was the start of a revolution. Where African-Americans played professional sports with Caucasians.

Flatter, Ron. "Johnson boxed, lived on his own." 2007: 1. Print. <http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00014275.html>.
In this source it talks about how Jack Johnson had also had something to with breaking the color barrier. It gives a background look into the boxer’s life and how he was able to beat Jim Jeffries. Jim Jeffries had came out of retirement just to fight Jack Johnson in what went into a 15 round fight. They fought in front of 22,000 people and from that fight Johnson received $117,000. A little boy working hard on the boats and trying to make a living ended up with a heavyweight champ title.

"Racism in Hockey Happens to Often." 1. (2011): 1. Web. 6 Jan. 2012. <http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/09/24/racism-in-hockey-all-too-often/http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/09/24/racism-in-hockey-all-too-often/http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/09/24/racism-in-hockey-all-too-often/>.

In this article it talks about the racism that even in 2011 continues to go on after years of slavery being over. With hockey not being such an integrated sport, only 20 black men in the league, there have still been some racist acts done to these men. The fans are the ones that are showing their affection to the teammates and the article makes it clear what is going on. Not only do they say it could be about racism but they do discuss the possibilities of someone just being stupid and ignorant but as the history is being looked at it is clear that it is more than that.

Wall, Jonathan. "Video of flagrant foul no-calls at basketball game goes viral." (2012): 1. Web. 9 Jan. 2012. <http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/video-flagrant-foul-no-calls-basketball-game-goes-133731387.html>.
In this article it talks about a video that was posted on youtube and received all types of responses. The video shows how someone went up and was fouled that led into a fight. The way the problem went down made the young boy seem like he was the biggest bully in the basketball season. Also he is know known as the dirtiest player on the court at the time.

This I Believe: The Different the Better

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 9:27 am
Walking through the hallways in class you can tell that no two people are the same, but why are so many people judge for being so different. Whether someone dresses out of the ordinary or just they aren't afraid to be themselves everyone looks at it as a problem. I look at it completely different.
I strongly believe that people should dance like no one is watching, sing like no one can hear them, live like it's heaven on earth, and to love as though you never been hurt. In order to do these things you have to be yourself.
I remember at the start of wanting to come into high school I was nervous about whether I would be accepted or if people acted the way I did. As i went through my first week of high school I realized that no one is going to act the way I do, laugh the way I do, or in all just be me.
I learned that it is fine for me to be that different person, because with everyone being so different it makes the world go round. I was looking at a show The Fairly Odd Parents and remember a specific episode were Timmy wished that everyone was exactly the same so he could stop being bullied.Through out the show he was enjoying the fact that everyone was the same, but as time went on he started to realize how boring life was for the fact that everyone wanted to be the exact same.
America is made up of billions of people with no two people the same. People who have different opinions on the same topic, enjoy different types of music, or may be from the same culture and eat a different type of food. I look at it as though if someone has to change the way they are just to fit in a crowd they aren't being true to them self. As the saying goes rather be loved for who I am then who I'm not. Fitting in may same like the easiest thing to do but as life goes on I have learned the different the better.

La Cancin Completa

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 2:30 pm
I'm especially proud of my refran because it answers the question all in 3 little lines and is able to catch onto pretty easily. Its just simple and that's how most songs are.
The only thing that I might have to change is the type of beat I'm going to use since I have to make sure the that the words go well with the beat.
I talked about the types of things in my neighborhood and how we live a regular week.
I plan on having the beat from the song "Danza Kuduro" it has a fast pace to it and I enjoy the way it flows with my lyrics.

My refrain is suppose to show were I at and how it is around in my neighborhood.
Im happy with how easy it is to flow with and how it makes sense and is easy to comprehend for anyone.
I just want to make sure that the draft makes a lot of sense and if there is a way to improve it that I can do that.
The only thing I found difficult was actually choosing something to write about and being able to base a whole song on something that I can make sense of.

Humanities Portfolio 2011

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 9:00 am
Throughout this year in Copper Stream 2010-2011 something that really stuck out to me was the poetry unit. There were many points that I was able to take with me after doing this unit. The general understanding that I got from this was that poetry is a way of expression and can be expressed through more than just writing. When we had to do our wiki spaces most of my poems talked about my dad and what I was going through at the time. The poems allowed me to get some of my bottled up emotions out and let someone hear me without hearing my voice. The poems I wrote can be found on my wiki spaces.

I learned that poetry is more than just roses are red and violets are blue, poetry can be a song, rap, the outside world, and a drawing. There are no limits when it comes poetry and what it can mean.

Another thing that I will be able to take with me is that writing is a group process and not just an individual project. It takes more than one opinion on someone’s paper to make it right. With every paper I had wrote this year it had been edited at least twice before I finally made my final paper. One paper that I was proud of was I believe the first quarter benchmark. We had to write a letter for Lord of the Flies. On that paper I had it reviewed a few times and kept making many different adjustments to it so it will be perfect. This paper can be seen at the bottom of my blog.

The final thing I will take from this is the crossing boundaries unit and when we read the book Their Eyes Were Watching God. The units went hand in hand with one another and it’s a good thing they were placed right behind each other. We had even written some “rules, roles and responsibilities” that we as teens hear all the time and have to deal with. In mine I wrote how your suppose to go to school and maintain A’s and B’s only, your suppose to act your age not your shoe size, your not suppose to go around acting crazy or like a little boy, also you can’t just be round boys all the time. This unit helped and showed me how society looks at people and how women are treated.

While reading the book Their Eyes Were Watching God I noticed how put down a female is in society. The women are supposed to let the man be in charge and cater to his every whim. As a woman they have no control over their life and not until they get the courage to stand up and leave will anything change. I made a video that showed how many women deal with the abuse of a man but takes a long time for them to do anything about it.

Throughout the year in English and History I’ve just learned that there are a lot of things to learn about in the world. We have to understand how women get paid less than a man.  Another thing that I wont forget is how society has a certain standard of speaking. There is a Standard English that people need to live up to but in reality no one can live that standard. This classes taught me that’s its alright to be our self and live life expressing how we feel.

Lord of the Flies

From the time Piggy stepped onto the island until his fatal death he was judged about everything. From his appearance to his asthma to the little things he tried to say to the group. He could never say what was on his mind or even try to act as a normal kid because of his awkwardness. Just like the way Piggy was judged so is everyone else in society.

People judge one another like its nothing. It has become a part of human nature to just turn to someone else and start talking about someone. The judgment can be for the good or the bad. When it was time to vote for a new President people didn’t judge based on what could get done they judged based on color, gender, and age.

In 2008 when the presidential election was going on ever I went people were extremely happy to know that we would either have a women president or a black president. The thing I noticed though was it wasn’t about what people wanted to be able to get from these two candidates it was about color and gender. To just for everyone to be able to say they would have a black president or a women president would have been enough for the USA.

“Assassinate Obama”, school children chanted when Obama was elected president. This was found on the site.  Another incident that happened was a nine year old boy told a little girl on the bus “I hope Obama gets assassinated.”  The same night someone trashed the little girl’s aunt lawn and left two pizza boxes full of feces because they had Obama posters on their lawn. This just shows that because of the color of Obama’s skin and the people that followed him they were judged and had to deal with the actions of other people that didn’t like the idea of having a black man run the country. People still live in the past were whites run everything and other people have to deal with the actions of those people.

Another thing that I found was something from Karen Armstrong’s speech is when  she said that stereotypes divide us, which is very true. Ralph, Piggy, and the twins were all divided from Jack and the rest of the boys because of the differenced Jack and Ralph had. They had caused everyone else to pick a side and try to live their life as if that was the only way they could live on the island. Karen Armstrong’s statement was proved based on what theses little boys had to go through in this novel.

Reading Lord of the Flies all the boys judged each other on what they can or can’t do and how they looked. The one that experienced the most judgment was Piggy. He was noticed a little when Jack’s boys realized the specs were what gave them fire, but even then it wasn’t the type of attention he wanted or deserved. The only time he got respect was when he died, and the only one that showed him that respect was Ralph. Throughout the whole book Piggy never got a say on anything that happened. Even though Ralph listened to Piggy in some way he really didn’t listen to anything he had to say. Everyone treated Piggy as if he was just someone taking up space.

As the time came closer to Piggy’s death he had gotten some type of respect. When he went back to get his specs he took the conch shell with him. Every time he would start talking and someone would interrupt him he got control again just by waving the conch shell around. As the bolder hit Piggy and knocking him off the cliff he never died with the respect that he should have died with. As he fell off the cliff and the shell broke everyone was a lot more worried about the shell then him.

Never Shall I

Never shall I forget the phone call that we had received

Never shall I forget seeing my family rushing to the hospital

Never shall I forget seeing my uncle all bruised up with broken bones

Never shall I forget sitting on my grandma’s lap while she cried her eyes out

Never shall I forget the details of my uncle’s body flying across the concrete

Never shall I forget the day my uncle was almost killed

Never shall I forget any of these details

OP-ED

“Since When Is It Okay?”

At an elementary school a teacher had taken a girl’s hair and cut one of the braids. She cut the braid because the girl was playing with it. At another school a teacher kicked out her student because of the kind of hair product she had in her hair. The girl was mixed with black and white and was the only colored child in the class; the teacher was white. She kicked the girl into the hallway and then told her to go to another class were it was all black students. The parents were mad about the whole thing because the teacher didn’t take it up with the parents.

Women have started to have a big eating disorder. About 5-10 million girls in the USA suffer from an eating disorder. One girl name Jade Hughes had a problem with this and was diagnosed with chronic anorexia. She played soccer from elementary to high school was always in shape, was only 120 pounds and 5”4. She was never over weight but because of what people told her she wanted to be in charge of something in her life. She took control of her eating, the only thing she had control over. She had to eventually go to the hospital and got therapy to help her and try to go back to were she was because she had to drop down to 80 pounds.

Women have had a problem lately with being disrespected, frowned upon, and so many other things. Media has become a big factor in why women are looked down on as if they can’t be equal to a male. The music today is all about a girl shaking her butt to a beat and men being put over top of the women. Music went being about the music and something new in life to be about “money, trappin, and hoes.” On Kanye West new CD album he has a picture of a naked white women on top of a black men. Men and women have lost respect for each other they don’t have the same values as people did when back in the 80’s and early 90’s.

When did it become okay for a man to down grade a woman? When did it become okay for girls to call each other out of name and laugh about it as if it was nothing?  These are the questions I ask when I see a women being disrespected by a man who doesn’t even deserve her. These are the types of questions I ask when I walk through the hallways in a high school and see boys cursing girls out like its nothing. Or when I see a boy trying to act like they all big and bad. Why sit there and take that type of disrespect and just laugh about it, it shows what type of women you are when you let that stuff slide.

As women we should be treated as royalty. Not for the simple fact that we should but we are what keep the world growing. Women need to step up and not take the disrespect that we have already endured enough. We fought for so long to have the same right as a man but in the end we let them walk all over us. It’s time for women to be treated like a women and not a dog. It’s time for change.

Descriptive Piece

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 2 - Block on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Friday the 13th that date changed my day for the worse. I was on m way to work, ready to get my check and go do some shopping before going to North Carolina for the rest of the summer. I would always take the same bus route to get to work, the 47 bus and then the 56 bus. Every time the bus would get ready to go onto Broad I could swear I felt the bus go on two wheels because it was turning too fast. Well on the 13th I knew I had a reason to be scared of that bus ride.

As the bus was taking the turn onto 10th street going past the trolley tracks it just sped down the hill and then everything went into slow motion. It felt like a movie the way everything went slow motion. As a car came in front of the bus the bus hit it at full speed. Everyone on the bus flew forward. A little baby in a stroller fell to the side and someone fell on top of him. Two little girls fell and hit the front of the bus. I flew and fell on top of three people. We got up quickly and tried to help all the kids get up. The mother was screaming at the top of her lungs. “ Get off my baby! Help my baby get up!” everything happened in slow motion but so fast at the same time. When the paramedics arrived he asked who wanted to go to the hospital. I didn’t know what to do so I started walking. I just walked the rest of the way to work. Those five blocks felt endless; it felt like the longest walk of my life

As I walked the car accident kept replaying in my head. It was the only thing I could think about and how much worst it could have been. The way everyone flew forward replayed continuously in my mind.  Another thing that I couldn’t get out off my mind was the way the trolley tracks looked before the car had hit us. It felt like a big rollercoaster ride gone wrong.

The accident made an impact on every kind of transportation I take. The next day I was on my way to North Carolina and I had to take a plane. I never been scared or nervous of flying before but this time I was a lot more worried.  From the minute I stepped onto the plane I felt as though something bad was going to happen. Nothing felt safe to me any more. My legs were shaking and I was breathing hard.  I was trying to stay calm and even try to sing to myself but that didn’t work. There was about thirty minutes left in the flight and something went wrong.  Out of nowhere the plane had a sudden drop. It dropped so fast I felt my heart go straight to my butt. And then it felt like it was lifted straight up.  It scared me senseless and made me scared to get on the next plane. Even though those past two days were a scary experience it made up for it when I was able to see my dad and have a good time.

Having those two experiences made me a little more jumpy when I’m on public transportation. When a bus turns or is speeding down a street I get a little nervous. I know that I shouldn’t worry as much but now it’s just in me to be a little worried. Also when a bus is crowded or when it isn’t evened out on both sides I get a little jumpy. It’s hard to get on a bus and trust that I’ll be okay. What also makes it hard is when the bus driver is driving fast and makes a sharp turn because that’s how the accident started. It may be a weird thing but those two experiences made want to be more cautious when I’m traveling alone.

Autobiography

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 2 - Block on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 12:42 pm

“Who was that Girl

She sat on her bed and started thinking about all the possible things she could have said or should have said. She wondered what she would be doing if she had done those things she set her mind to do. She was starting to prove people right that she was just what people thought she was, had the attitude, mouth and everything to let people know that she is just like everyone else. Then she thought, “ Now that it went that way I have to make it work for my benefit.” This is her story.

Growing up she was always told that she spoke so proper and that she had manners, but has diapers turned into panties she was told other wise. She was constantly told that her attitude wasn’t going to get her anywhere that if she kept going with her smart-ass mouth she wouldn’t make it far. That didn’t stop her or the way she was act. She was her own person and couldn’t let anyone else try and live her life for her.

As she got older something she notice that didn’t bother her at first was everyone calling her an “ass” or saying she was a “smart-ass.” But it seemed she was being called it more and more. Then she started to realize is she that type of person? Is she called a “smart-ass” because of the comments she makes or because of the remarks she makes? Why can’t she just act her self and not be judged by anyone?

She remembered arguing with her brother one night and they were just going back and forth.

“That’s why your mom eats dirt,” she said.

“ Why would you say something like that you ass,” her brother responded

“Don’t call me an ass. Do it again and I’m going to punch you in the neck,” she had said back to him.

He responded back in slow motion, “ You A s s. You ain’t going to do anything you a s s.”

She got mad and punched him in the neck. They started fighting in her room like to hard-core thug guys. After they were done they were laughing about the whole thing but that stayed on her mind in the back.

As she went to school and continued with her life she had gotten this attitude as if she didn’t care about what people had to say or what people thought of her. People said negative things to her all the time but she was sure that she was not going to let any of that get to her. They told her countless times that, “She’s going to be a pregnant teen. That her smart mouth is going to get her in trouble. That no one is going to take her seriously with her attitude.” And each time the only thing she could think or say is that she will prove every person that said she wouldn’t make it and show them that she can.

One evening she was having a conversation with her mom and the only thing her mom could comment on was the way she talked. Her mother talked about her speech non-stop and criticized everything that came out her mouth.

“You used to talk perfect when you were younger and know you sound like a ghetto chick,” her mother would say.

“You always talking ‘bout someone and criticizing them. You don’t have the best speech in the world either,” she would say to make her mom feel just as bad.

“You need to practice the way you speak and improve on it. Stop talking all loud and ghetto like your not educated,” her mom replied.

“I am very educated and speak perfectly fine,” she would say. And from there she would just leave the problem alone.

Not until she was in her English class that she realized everyone talks

differently and everyone has there own form of talking and understanding each

other. Everyone talks a way based on their ethnic group or were there from. Whether

they’re from the city or if they’re from the country everyone has there own certain

speech. And when she realized that she realized that there is nothing wrong with the

way she speaks or her attitude. That girl also realized that she can’t try and be

something she isn’t and faking it won’t get her anywhere, and that girl was me.
