For my senior project, I decided to do a fashion show, to allowed the SLA community to be apart of it by designing their clothing and showing some skills they have. At first, I did not know where to start. I was confused on how exactly I wanted my capstone to be. Finally, I decided that I wanted each designer to create something that is already made into something new. I wanted the designers to also choose who they want as their models, and what designs they want their models to have. Everyone is not perfect, some people wants to do something once in a lifetime, but they cannot because no one has given them a chance. I felt as though having anyone in my show and as my designer was fine with me. It is hard to be something you want in life when there is no one out there who is willing to help you or give you a chance. Even though I may not be the best at speaking or writing, SLA choose to give me a chance as a student, which made me who I am today. Everything I have learned, I learned it from my SLA family. Therefore, everyone has a passion for something but may not be good at it, so I was actually looking for people like that. Also, I did not want any discrimination towards anyone, so I did not do any tryouts or pick and choose people. As the week went by, I changed up a few things because I came up with new ideas, I needed the SLA community to help me donate clothes, shoes etc., or anything they did not want. The next week, I more and more about how exactly am I going to do this in so little time. I watched Youtube fashion shows and read more articles on how to create clothing, for example cutting sewing and even styles that I thought were cute. After weeks of researching, I found 5 designers who were interested in being a part of my capstone. I told them exactly how I was confused on what to do exactly but I will soon figure things out. So with the help of the SLA community, I was able to get two big bins of clothes and other things. I showed my designer some ideas I learned from researching, and how I wanted them to present their designs.
Each week I changed my capstone, or just made it better with some new ideas. Since I wanted it to be a creating new styles from old style I asked my SLA community to help me by donating clothes they did not want. After, I asked the designers to choose five models to model their clothing. Also, they should sketch out their designs for me. Afterwards, I let the designers buy fabrics and colors for their designer, some of them wanted to sew new clothing but did not in the end. Since it was all about the designers, I then thought of a new idea again. I decided to have five themes for the fashion show since there were five designers. Each designer made two outfits per model. As the process went on, a lot of things changed. Some people were not coming during the week to work on their clothing. Some of them were not able to sew with the sewing machine. Also, one of my of my designers dropped out. At first I wanted to freak out and cry, however I did not because I learned that it would not solve the problem and the show was in a week. So, I decided to create a theme to fill in for the designer that dropped out. I asked a teacher to teach me how to sew. I learned how to sew and dip dye in two to three days time, then I helped some of the designers who needed more time on sewing. Along with this, I asked some of friends from CHAD high school to come in to help because they were the experts at it. The week for the show, I taught the models how to walk, asked the camera crew to record for the show and got the DJ, makeup, performers, all that I needed. Overall, at the end of the day, my show went well, because everyone that I asked to help me did their part, and I made sure everything was set up correctly. A lot of the people in the SLA community helped the show to be great, so without my designers and them, the show would not have happened.
I am most proud of myself, I really had no idea how to start at first but I just know I needed to start, so as weeks went by, I came up with more and more ideas for the designers and i never depended on anything. I always have a back up for just in case. I learned a lot of things threw out this process, I never knew anything about sewing clothes or cutting patterns for the clothes before sewing the clothes. I also learn that teamwork is the most valuable thing you need to a fashion show. But if I had the chance to do it all over again, I would start earlier on plaining things, instead of waiting, I would work with the models for a long time instead of waiting the week of the show. SLA is a better place because I allowed some of my following SLA students to show their talents or got the chance to do something they always wanted to do but never got the chance to do it. Maybe, it change some people lives, some of them may want to become a model or have more confident in performing now. Also, the diversity I made the show to have, everyone felt comfortable with what they was representing, each styles represents something and I feel really good that I was able to make some people feel confident of what they do.
Winston Wright: Process Paper
PROCESS PAPER
Capstone Process Paper
I made a confectionery cookbook. In my cookbook, I found a holiday for every month; international and in the US, and found, developed and modified recipes to fit within the holiday’s culture. Usually I would either try to find desserts eaten during the holiday, but if I could not, I would find popular desserts from that country or ingredients that native to that country and incorporate those instead. I chose this project because my family does a lot of baking. My cousin actually teaches a baking class and enters competitions where she develops her own recipes and I felt really inspired to try to learn up on these things myself. Next year, I’m actually going to help her in one of her competitions. My mom and grandma also bake and have their own specialities; my mom’s is cheesecake and my grandma makes a lot of amish and traditional desserts and is amazing at decorating cakes. I really wanted to keep the baking tradition alive in my family and by doing this project, I feel like I could continue it by learning as much tips, tricks, and techniques as I can. As with the international aspects, I wanted to incorporate other holidays besides one that are very common here in the United States. While I did pick a couple, most of the holidays are from other countries. By doing this, I worked with ingredients that were more uncommon and learned a few techniques I wouldn’t have otherwise.
To complete my capstone, the first thing I did was find a different holiday for every month. Once I had done this, I looked to see what different things I could make. I had to find things that would pertain to the holidays in the corresponding country, but was still something in my skill set and appetizing to people here in the United States. Making the treats delicious for people in the US was important to me because there are many people who limit their flavors to chocolate and vanilla, but I wanted to show that new things may be just as good or even better. Once I had laid out a few recipes, I began making them week by week; trying one recipe per week. If the recipe did not work out, I would either try to remake it that day if there were enough ingredients left over or I would try to make it again the following week. When I was at least a little satisfied with a product, I would bring it to school so people could try them and give me feedback. Manna was especially helpful with this because she was very honest and not afraid to tell me when something had a weird taste or needed something extra.
In order to keep on schedule, I made a timeline and had notifications sent to my phone that told me the agenda of each week. I also had the entirety of May for revisions.
My biggest obstacle was the green tea cupcake for Independence Day in Morocco, which symbolized their national drink; green tea with mint. I probably tried this cupcake about 5 times before deciding to try something else, which took a large chunk of my time. The first cupcake came out too dense for my liking, so I tried a different recipe and even considered using the base mix for my mint cake. This used mostly egg whites to make the cake very light and fluffy. I also could not find matcha, or green tea powder; I could only find instant green tea, which has the flavor, but is mostly composed of sugar. Therefore, every time I made the cake, the flavor was not as strong as I wanted it to be. In the end, I decided to just make my own peppermints to focus more on the mint aspect of the national drink. To complete my capstone, I used a lot of cooking blogs. Usually I would trust food network or some other big name cooking company more than food blogs, but the recipes for the big companies were more complex than they needed to be or they simply did not have what I was looking for. The food blogs had innovative recipes that I could work off of, even if I had to modify these recipes more. I even used a few foreign blogs that used the metric system. I had to convert different ingredients into the imperial system, which is really risky especially when it comes to baking powder. In order to do this, I also had to use online converters.
I am most proud of my entire final product. I was able to pull everything together and even though I had some trouble, I was able to have at least one recipe for every month. I am also very proud of my recipe for September. I didn’t really find a holiday that took my interest in September that did not take place in a country I had already focused on, so, since it is my birthday month, I included a recipe that I had developed myself. It does not appeal to everyone and it may contain an acquired taste, but nonetheless I am still proud of it because there are some who do like it. When it comes to baking, I feel like as long as something is liked by someone, it was worth making.
From this capstone, I learned how to manage my time well for a long term project. I also learned that it is best to leave a gap of time for revision to make up for mistakes and obstacles that may prevent a timely finish.
If I could do this all over again, I would start earlier and I would look at more video tutorials on certain techniques, such as folding and creaming. I would probably find a way to link the recipes better by maybe having a common theme or sticking to one place. I was not able to include as much information as I wanted to because I had limited space and I didn’t want whole pages filled with information. In my eyes, having full pages of written information would take down the creative aspect of my final product.
I made SLA a better place by encouraging people to try different things. People usually only want mundane things that could be bought from anywhere or made with a pre-made mix, but I wanted to encourage diversity when it came to the things they ate. Usually when I had people taste test things for me, they either did not really like that certain thing, they had never had it or were reluctant to try it. I, however, wanted different views on different items and so I pressured people to try things. Even if it is not something they would eat on a regular basis or something they would choose over their favorites, at least they had tried them.

This source will
be used to give insight throughout my research paper. A paragraph will be
written explaining how gravity is used to keep our satellites in orbit for the
purpose of communication, navigation etc. Without satellites, our modern
society would look extremely different and without the assistance of gravity
keeping these satellites in our orbit for service, the satellites couldn’t function.

<hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/gpot.html>.
This source gives
insight into exactly what gravitation potential energy is. In my research paper,
I plan on discussing it briefly to give background knowledge on how a trebuchet
is able to use this to launch objects. In the paper, I will briefly touch on
how this concept works but will not go into detail as far as explaining the
math and applications of the equation used to calculate gravitation potential
energy. .

This source will
be used to find other applications of gravity throughout our society. Gravity
works in numerous ways and works on all objects equally. However, some objects
are affected differently due to mass or air resistance or other variables that
determine how much of it is being affected by the natural force.

I needed to know
when a trebuchet broke records during this competition because this is one of
the few modern day applications of a trebuchet while still keeping in mind its
original purpose. Punkin Chunkin is a nationwide event that pits machines
against each other to compete for the longest throw of a pumpkin. One specific
category is using the trebuchet. Although it isn’t the most powerful machine
throughout the competition, it is still fascinating to bring in fans every
year. Specifically, Yankee Siege, the record breaking trebuchet has brought in
a large fan base to the event.

This source was
especially helpful when considering the body paragraphs for my research paper.
There are not many applications in modern society for gravitational potential
energy. However, gravity is still utilized throughout society and this source
gives me some specific examples of what those are. It provided me with four
different applications of gravity including the early use of the trebuchets,
which will be explained in another part of the capstone, not the paper.

I used this
source for my final body paragraph of my research paper. Roller caosters in
general take advantage of gravity throughout the course of the ride, especially
when they are taken to the peak of its track. At the point where the coaster
train drops, it is converting gravitational potential energy into kinetic
energy. This source gives me specs on the fastest, tallest roller coaster in
the world. I used this coaster specifically to give an example of how gravity
creates mass amounts of energy and is then used to do work.

I used this
source to analyze how perpetual motion is a theory that often uses gravity to
create constant action within a device but to no fault. Usually, these ideas
are “futile” and often don’t work. In my paper I talk about how we may indeed
use gravity to tackle the problem of creating a machine that can actually
produce enough energy to sustain its own operation and supply energy to a load.
This would result in unlimited energy and I believe, just as people believed flight
to be impossible, we only think this cannot happen because our technology has
not yet advanced to that point yet.
"Perpetual Motion." Wikipedia.

I used this
source to simply explain exactly what perpetual motion was. I used another
source to describe how it is applied and related to gravity, but this source specifically
gave me an understanding of how exactly to describe it in the paper before
diving into deeper analysis of how we may use it in the future because at this
point it is a theory that we belive to be impossible.

is the last popular application of trebuchets in society. Every year, groups of
engineers being their machines to compete for who has the machine that can
launch a pumpkin the farthest. In this competition, the machines are categorized
and separated based on what type of machine they are. There is one group that
is specifically trebuchets and I found an interest into how many of these
trebuchets performed. Not to mention, their specs of their machines were
astronomical compared to the machine Vinny and I built.

This source is
actually a replacement for having the trebuchet in front of the audience
because it is always more effective to show people what you’re talking about
instead of simply talking about it. This is a clip of the trebuchet working at
its finest without actually launching a projectile in the room. This displays
the machines potential while still keeping it consistent with the overall
message of informing.

This source will
be useful for my history part of my capstone which gives a timeline of the uses
of the trebuchet on the website. The trebuchet lasted for a great deal until
the invention of gunpowder and was then deemed obsolete. Currently, trebuchets
are used more for recreational purposes, but still used throughout society. The
concept that drives the performance of a trebuchet is gravitational potential
energy which will be explained in other parts of the capstone.
"Tidal power - Wikipedia, the free

This is more
evidence I will use in my research that gives light to modern day applications
of gravity. Tidal power is used throughout oceans to generate electricity using
the tides, which are a result of the earth’s moon and the sun. The
gravitational effects these two entities have play a great role in the
invention of a new way to create renewable energy. This is both beneficial to society
and the environment because, with a struggling ecosystem, there is never a
wrong time to sacrifice a little if it means better the earth’s health.
"Trebuchet." Wikipedia. Wikipedi,
n.d. Web. 11 March 2013. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trebuchet>.
I used this
source as a reference to important dates on my timeline for the trebuchet. I
also knew I could obtain information about what different cultures and
countries utilized the trebuchet in ways that Alexander used them throughout
the sieges. The trebuchet was the primary heavy artillery alternative in the 12th
century and remained that way until the invention of gunpowder. It was still
used as a last resort, as demonstrated in 1779 by the British. Now, the
trebuchet is little more than a little entertainment

The Warwick Trebuchet is the world’s largest
trebuchet. I used this source to give perspective in my project for exactly how
large these machines were. The trebuchet Vinny and I made was around 11 feet
tall, and the Warwick trebuchet stands a towering 59 feet. This also goes
deeper into exactly what I wanted to do with this source. Vinny and I had a job
cut out for us, which is little in comparison to the jobs architects and
engineers have to face every day in their career.
"Yankee Siege Trebuchet in Greenfield, New

N.p., n.d. Web. 11 March 2013. <http://www.yankeesiege.com/>.
This source was
used mainly to demonstrate the modern day application of trebuchets today.
Yankee Siege is the trebuchet that currently holds the record for longest
pumpkin throw held at Punkin’ Chunkin’ by any other trebuchet. This is the last
practical application trebuchets have in today’s society, but it still serves a
purpose. Trebuchets that can be made today upstage those used in the 12th
century.

Link to my Presentation (:
For my senior Project I decided to make a visual compare and contrast of Pakistani and American Culture. There are two reasons of why I chose this for my capstone project. One is that being living in USA, I must have enough knowledge about American culture and traditional values and their histories. The second one is that I always wanted to teach other about Pakistan so I decided to do this project. Me and my sister conducted a deep and thorough research about these two entirely different cultures in the world. Since it was hard to include and portray each and every factor that makes up the culture of both countries, I made three canvases which show three main differences in between these two cultures. I tried my best to make them not look like a kid's art work because I did painting for the first time so it was difficult to make them look like more realistic.
Bibliography
1. "Trendpak." : Trend of Culture Pakistan. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2013. <http://trendpak.blogspot.com/2011/04/trend-of-culture-pakistan.html>.
This source provides information about the culture of Pakistan. The information based on cultures and traditions is divided into the sections of all four provinces which then include the total mass, population, languages and dresses of each province. Although I already knew a lot of information provided in this resource but it still helped me in refreshing of all that information in my mind. It is very effective resource because it includes the portraits and paintings of culture which is really helpful for me because of same idea of painting for this project. In short, it provided me enough information and helped in organizing the ideas.
2. Kwait, Derek M. Differences between Pakistan & the U.S. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2013.
One limitation of this source was that it just discussed about religion, government, culture, education and women. There are many other components out there which can be added to enhance the complexity and information of the source and give the reader more information besides above components. Overall I would say, this source was a good one to share and compare the two countries, who are religiously and culturally different. Still I am able to gather the things which are required for my project.
3. Pavri, Tinaz. "Countries and Their Cultures." Pakistani Americans. Jrank, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2013
<http://www.everyculture.com/multi/Le-Pa/Pakistani-Americans.html>.
I selected this source because its beyond the discussion of Pakistani culture. It not only talks about the simple term"Culture" but divides the components which make the culture together such as cuisine, traditional dresses, languages, dances and songs, holidays and celebrations, families and community dynamics, weddings and funerals, religion and etc. Besides this, it also talks a little about the history and immigration wave before partition. This source can help a lot in collecting a lot of ideas to start off with the project.
4. "Culture of Unites States." Martinfrost.ws. Martinfrost, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2013.
Similar to the upper one (based on the components that add up to make a culture), this source discusses is very beneficial to gather ideas. But the only difference is that this one is about the Culture of the United States. It also have important and well organized ideas which make up culture of U.S. Names, food, popular culture, technology, sports, clothing, education, language, religion, jobs, housing, relationships, gender roles etc, are discussed very thoroughly in this source which is the proof of reliability of this source.
5. "US Culture." Kwintessential.co.uk. Kwintessential, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2013.
I really liked this source because it not just keep talking about the above components of culture including language but also goes beyond to them and discusses about the etiquettes of business, dining, greetings, giving gifts, communication, which is very interesting to learn about. Other than this it also includes the facts and statistics about location, capital, population, climate and diversity. This source is different than others because of the reason that I discussed above. It also helped me in getting to know about the etiquettes of different classes in U.S.
6. "Over 55 Yearsâ Experience of English Language Teaching." St Giles International. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2013.
This document gives information about American customs, and discusses those points which are obviously different than other cultures and traditions. It gives a very detailed information about the manners of people at different places such as on road, public transportations, crosswalks, social behaviour, “Excuse me” and contact. The reason why I chose this is because it is different than other documents and gives information which is very detailed and also discussed in an organized manner.
7. "Culture and Ethnic Groups | USA.gov." Culture and Ethnic Groups | USA.gov. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2013.
This source gives information about not only American culture including folklife, holiday, social and cultural history, facts about American flag, but also about African American history and culture, Asian American history and culture, Hispanic and Latino history and culture and native Americans history and culture. This source doesn’t help a lot but still it can be said that this source can be used for this project to learn different histories and cultures of United States.
8. "Pakistan Culture." Kwintessential.co.uk. Kwintessential, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2013.
Similar to one of the above resources, this one also discusses about the facts and statistics of Pakistani language, culture and religion. It also gives knowledge about the etiquettes of different classes just like in America. The whole resource is classified into sub-sections which then give information about location, populations, ethnic makeup, religions, society and culture (Islam, family and hierarchical society), etiquettes and customs. It also gives knowledge about the etiquettes of dining, business and gift giving etc, which is really helpful and also marks this source as a reliable source.
9. Kartha, Deepa. "The Culture of Pakistan." Buzzle.com. Buzzle.com, 26 Sept. 2011. Web. 30 Jan. 2013.
This source tells about the culture, architecture, art , literature and social culture. Tells that pakistani culture is not limited to urdu but a lot of work written in language. Specially government paper matters and laws are written in english. About social culture that mostly Pakistanis are conservative in nature, In short it gives a lot information for their beleifs and thoughts.
10. "Pakistan Culture." , Pakistan State Culture, Pakistani Culture, Tourism. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2013.
This tourism website gives information about Pakistan; its culture and places. The reason why I chose this because it provides information about history and mainly culture to attract tours to make a visit of the country. I just wanted to use this source because of the reliability of this website which is very significant in order to judge a source.
11. ":: PAKISTAN CULTURE :: Ministry of Culture ... Government of Pakistan ::." :: PAKISTAN CULTURE :: Ministry of Culture ... Government of Pakistan ::. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2013.
I selected this source because of many reasons. This is a website of Pakistani culture which just provides information and knowledge of each and everything and every culture’s information. This one source is enough for getting all knowledge of Pakistani culture such as Pakistani people and land, historical perspectives, cultural heritage and archaeological heritage.
12. "American Culture through Painting." Library.csi.cuny.edu. Library.csi, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2013.
One limitation of this source is that it just gives description and understanding of American culture through painting and sculptures. Besides this, there are many things which could be added to increase its reliability. Although it provides some portraits and paintings of American culture but those are not enough for understanding for my project but still it gives me a little idea of what my painting should look like and how should I reflect culture in drawings.
13. "Prof. A. R. NAGORI." Prof. A. R. Nagori. N.p., 30 Jan. 2013. Web. 30 Jan. 2013.
This one is an official website of a Pakistani artist A.R Nagori which includes his paintings about every topic. I chose this one because it does have paintings about different cultures of Pakistan which is really helpful because those paintings give me ideas of how a typical cultural painting should look like. Examples of paintings include landscapes of Thar, village and Karachi city.
14. "Architecture of USA." Wikipedia.org. Wiki, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2013.
Wikipedia gives a lot of useful information about any topic or issue or whatever. This is a wikipedia source which is about the architecture of United States. I would be including architecture of both countries. Therefore I chose this source because it provides me information about the architecture of U.S. I already have enough information of Pakistani architecture which is why I didn’t include any source for Pakistani architecture. In short, it has enough detailed information about U.S architecture and its developments since its history.
15. Evans, Marrion Boddy. "Learn to Paint: Your First Ever Painting." About.com Painting. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Jan. 2013.
I looked up for such sources and selected this one because it gives me enough information about how to paint. It also points out some strategies to begin with the painting including materials, decisions, steps, finding ideas, safely usage of colors etc and etc. This is so helpful because it provides information for beginners and I needed this information because I am going to do painting for the first time.
Here is the collage of paintings I drew
