Q3 Artworks Benchmark- Imani Williams

Posted by Imani Williams in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 7:47 am

For the third quarter I was very challenge and taken out of my comfort zone a little bit but I have fun with creating my drawings. The one I'm most proud of would be the eye drawing. I put a lot of effort into  creating that one and it turned out way better than expected. All my drawings were pieces that I have never done before so I kept messing up and having to start over and over again. This quarter in advances art was very creative and challenging but helpful in the long run. I look forward to see what the last quarter brings.

Q3 Artworks Benchmark- Cynthia To

For the Third Quarter, I made five different types of artworks. From all of the artworks, we did for this quarter, I really like the last one the most, the mandala. I feel like that I have improved a lot on my art skills from the first semester. The first artwork that I made was the bike drawing. This artwork was really difficult because we had to draw a bike from memory. I wanted to make the bike different colors for the different objects on the bike. The second artwork that I made two optical illusions. This was really fun do make. One of the optical illusions looks like a room. I picked out two colors that stood out together. The third artwork that I made shading form. I really cool shading in shapes. I think my sphere looks more realistic than the rest of the shapes. The fourth artwork that I made was an eye drawing. This drawing was really hard to draw and shading in to make it realistic. The fifth artwork that I did was a mandala. I decided to make a pineapple because I wanted people who are looking at this piece to think of happiness and paradise. I chose warm colors for this.

Third Quarter Art

Posted by Fatu Castillo in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 11:21 am

During the Third Quart of Advanced Art, I created about 12 pieces of work from five collective assignments. They are all featured in my slideshow, going from oldest to newest.
First, I was made to draw a realistic bike using reference from the internet and an actual model brought into the class. It was a lot more complicated than I first expected, which was surprising. It was complicated to draw given a bike's multiple parts and design aspects, I couldn't just draw from memory.
Second, I made two optical illusions, one in monochrome colors and one is primary colors. The first one, in monochrome colors, was the easiest to create for obvious reasons. The colors were simple, the lines were easy, and the shading wasn't complicated to do. On the other hand, my illusion in primary colors was a bit harder to do. Simply because I had to generate it from scratch and decide on the color scheme as well as what illusion it would give off.
Third, a shaded in three basic shapes in an effort to give the dimensions. I actually was very please with the final products of this one. The penciling itself was a bit repetitive, I had to separate each shape into sections and use them as guide on how dark or light I had to shade them. Them I used my fingertips to smudge the entire work so they blended together.
Fourth, I drew a realistic eye, as realistic as I could make it, using references. This assignment frustrated me quite a bit, I kept scrapping what I had to redraw the shape of the eye. Other times I realized I hadn't drawn the inner-eye correctly and had to start over. I'm vaguely satisfied with the final product but I wish I could have done it more realistically.
Fifth, I digitally made five mandalas, printed them, and colored them in. I tried to stick with a nature theme throughout the coloring process. I wanted most of them to lost like flowers or forest scenes. The ones featured aren't the initial ones I colored, I was told that they needed to be resized and recolored.

I think that during this quarter my pieces were out of my comfort zone a little bit. The first bike drawing was the hardest assignment for me because I usually do abstract work instead of drawing actual objects. I think these pieces over all were really challenging but it was worth all of the effort. I really enjoyed the mandala piece the most. I learned how to make one  while ago and it was a great experience to make another one. I also like the eye drawing because the eye is something I use quite often in my drawings.

Quarter 3 Blog Post, Majarucon

Posted by Jhazzelle Majarucon in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 3:02 pm

In this quarter, I created a total of five artworks. The first one being the bike drawing. Before I began the bike drawing process I looked at a real life bicycle and a bicycle online to refresh my memory as to what a bike looks like. After that, I took a big poster and began drawing the bike on the plain white poster board using a regular number 2 pencil. The second artwork was the optical illusion. In this artwork, I had to create my own optical illusion using spheres or circles then after the drawing I colored it in. The third artwork was the shading forms. I had to follow the directions in a pdf where I drew a circle, a cube, and a rectangle. Then, I had to shade in these objects using differents shades for each object. The fourth artwork that I did was the eye drawing where I had to draw my eye from observation so, I looked at myself in the mirror and started sketching my own eye to the paper. I only used a regular number 2 pencil and did not color this in. Lastly, the fifth artwork for this quarter was the Mandala Art where I had to just draw a mandala on a piece of paper and create my own design then I used different colors to fill in different sections of the mandala.

Na'eem Artist statement

For my quarter 3 art, I wanted to explore the powers of shading and mimicking. I first started off by drawing a bike. I haven't rode a bike in years so this was challenging. After going through the hard stages, I added my own twist on the bike's design. My next assignment was the optical ollisiun assignment where I did an eye. I learned a lot about shading. Then, I had the shading form assignment where my shading skills were put to the test with shading three different shapes. Right after that, I had an eye drawing. I tried my hardest to draw my own eye. The last assignment was my favorite. We had to draw an mandala. I did the ying yang sign and tried to add these cool colors and designs. I really enjoyed the turn out of all the assignments.

I really enjoyed this quarter considering that there was assignments that I really enjoyed doing. Especially the mandala assignment,I really enjoyed letting my brain flow onto the page and creating a nice mandala. The bike drawing was also a fun and interesting project because it was interesting in creating a bike from scratch which was challenging. Same goes for the eye drawing, optical illusion and shading forms. I had a lot of fun and feel like I have improved alot this quarter.

This quarter I feel that my art has improved so much from the beginning of the year. I feel that this quarter had more set assignments then free ones. Like the shading we had directions. That was a first but it was easy. The bike drawing was more free, up to my imagination. I had difficulty with that. But I really enjoyed the eye and mandala assignment. I love my Mandala! My goal for next quarter is to get better using color pencils.

Ben Fink-Second Artist Statement

Posted by Benjamin Fink in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 10:03 am

On this quarter we worked on five different art projects, which I promptly put into the slideshow seen on the left. The first project was to memorize an image of a bicycle I saw and use it to draw the most realistic looking bike I could. The second assignment was to create two optical illusions, one a sort of a tunnel shape and the other a sphere with lines going all across the paper. The week after that, we had to draw 3-D geometric figures and shade them in so that they appeared to have shadowy parts. The penultimate week of art saw us taking pictures of our eyes and sketching them as realistically as possible. Finally, we had to draw to mandalas, one shown in an example posted to the assignment, and the other an original design.

In thie second quarter I had the opportunity to display my artistry in an array of ways. In our first project, working with contours I really challenged myself and the results came out great. When it came to the faces and the still objects that i drew, everything came out well shaded and sculpted. Next, we went onto the painting assignment and I decided to paint the Philadelphia skyline with the wording of,"Philly", on it in the colors that Philly teams usually posses in their uniforms. Later on in this class we were granted the gift to recreate a famous art piece. My piece was the Son of Man and I used colored pencils and a No. 2 pencil to complete the task. As the quarter came to a close, the final assignment we were asked to sketch up and draw was the words of a famous song. I chose to recreate a Kendrick Lamar song and in the second to last slide you can see my result. Finally, you will see a picture of a wall in South Philadelphia where I was able to highlight depth of field and apply a filter through the app.
