Final Art Slideshow

Posted by Fatu Castillo in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 7:07 pm
During the Fourth Quarter of Advanced Art, I created dozens of pieces of work from 6 collective assignments. They are all featured in my slideshow, going from oldest to newest.
First, I edited pictures my youngest brother, which I am unable to post for familia reasons, and myself to make it for the backgrounds were transparent. I edited two amigurumi animals I had made and photographed so that their colors were altered. Then I edit two photos I took from offline so that one was recolored and the other was made transparent.
Second, I sketch and later drew a figure drawing of a nude woman sitting on a stool. This assignment was tricky for me since I had no real prior experience dealing with proportions. I think the final product came out alright though not realistic.
Third, I decided to draw out 29 timed sketches for the Line Drawing assignment. Surprisingly, I found the experience very enjoyable. The pressure to draw the animals in a limited time meant that I couldn't focus on detail too much and had to go with the flow.
Fourth, I made 4 digital drawings using the website that Ms. Hull provided. I wasn't  a fan of the website at first but once I got the hang of it, it was fun to use. My favorite piece is the neon rainbow basket.
Fifth, I created a sketches of a neighborhood street that gave the illusion of space. Not one of my favorites assignments to work on, I felt as if more guidance could've been given.
Sixth, I sketched out a photo and used texture to fill in every aspect of it. I went into his assignment thinking it would be more difficult that it actually was and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

For my Capstone Project, I decided that I wanted to pursue three things.
The First, crochet baby blankets and donate them to The Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia on Mother’s Day. The second, organize a crochet club to help interested students learn to take up the craft. And third, enhance my personal skills as a sewer and a knitter by taking up projects that expanded those skills
None of which were exactly challenging; more so, they were all time-consuming.
The first one, making and donating baby blankets, was the most complicated of the three. I had to work with limited time and finances, so I settled on making two blankets a week until I reached twenty-five blankets. To save on supplies, I decided to make all the the blankets triangular with slight variations to add a personal touch to each of them. Even with this though, I only was able to make ten, due to lack of finances and time. Personal labels bearing my name were added to each blankets to help compensate for the lack of quantity.
Crochet Club was easy enough to organize, advertise, and find a teacher sponsor with. I never wanted to assign a group project, so I helped individual members pursue projects that interested them.
Though most of my time was consumed by managing Crochet Club and making blankets, I did take up knitting and sewing projects. Including my mentor and I doing a joint knitting gproject together with regular check-ins, and repurposing clothes.

Third Quarter Art

Posted by Fatu Castillo in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 11:21 am
During the Third Quart of Advanced Art, I created about 12 pieces of work from five collective assignments. They are all featured in my slideshow, going from oldest to newest.
First, I was made to draw a realistic bike using reference from the internet and an actual model brought into the class. It was a lot more complicated than I first expected, which was surprising. It was complicated to draw given a bike's multiple parts and design aspects, I couldn't just draw from memory.
Second, I made two optical illusions, one in monochrome colors and one is primary colors. The first one, in monochrome colors, was the easiest to create for obvious reasons. The colors were simple, the lines were easy, and the shading wasn't complicated to do. On the other hand, my illusion in primary colors was a bit harder to do. Simply because I had to generate it from scratch and decide on the color scheme as well as what illusion it would give off.
Third, a shaded in three basic shapes in an effort to give the dimensions. I actually was very please with the final products of this one. The penciling itself was a bit repetitive, I had to separate each shape into sections and use them as guide on how dark or light I had to shade them. Them I used my fingertips to smudge the entire work so they blended together.
Fourth, I drew a realistic eye, as realistic as I could make it, using references. This assignment frustrated me quite a bit, I kept scrapping what I had to redraw the shape of the eye. Other times I realized I hadn't drawn the inner-eye correctly and had to start over. I'm vaguely satisfied with the final product but I wish I could have done it more realistically.
Fifth, I digitally made five mandalas, printed them, and colored them in. I tried to stick with a nature theme throughout the coloring process. I wanted most of them to lost like flowers or forest scenes. The ones featured aren't the initial ones I colored, I was told that they needed to be resized and recolored.

Art Slideshow

During the Second Quarter of Advanced Art, I made about thirty-five pieces of work collectively for six assignments. There are all featured here in the slideshow, from least recent to most recent.
First, I drew ten blind contour drawings for various things, including my face and my hands. I didn't choose any of the items for any particular reason, just things that very conveniently around. I wasn't expected for anything good to come out of my work but I was pleasantly surprised when I ended up liking the water bottle.
Second, I colored the same ten drawings mentioned above in various styles. Personally, I believe adding color made the drawing my sensible. I tend to lean towards drawing in pastels because I like the way light colors blend. It was interesting to see how coloring abstract drawings with abstract colors made them more appealing. My favorite one among them was the bright pink colored hand.
Third, I made five of my own drawings using pencils and colored them using oil pastels. It didn't take to an overall theme but instead drew what came to mind, my drawings tended to involve floral imagery and curls. Working with oil pastels was difficult to me, since I kept reducing them to crayons and wasn't sure how to blend colors. The drawing I prefer of any one them is the purple flower.
Fourth, I recreated two pieces of art from Keith Haring. To be frank, I choose to recreate his works on the basis of how stylized he is. I didn't have faith in my abilities if I were to recreate an art piece from someone who I actually admired. Still, it was fun drawing in his styles. I used oil pastels to color them in, which was a horrible idea since everything started to smudge.
Fifth, I illustrated two songs, Riptide by Vance Joy and Fresh Static Snow by Porter Robinson. Listening to Riptide, I always got the sense of isolation from Vance Joy so I drew a grey, dull city. But towards the end of the song, I always felt like he was reaching out to someone he loved, so I added streaks of colors and bright windows to give it warmth. Porter Robinson always writes song that happens in space, hence the drawing. I had fun using watercolors, I like how cosmic they can look.
Sixth, I took six for the photo editing assignment and there's not much else to say about it. It was difficult finding enough subjects to take photos of but I managed just fine. The hardest part of the assignment was getting the camera to focus on the closest thing relative to the screen. It was easy editing them and restoring proper color.

  • One package of Tostadas

  2. Place cup of vegetable oil on skillet.

  3. Sprinkle two tablespoons of salt evenly across oil.

  4. Empty two cans of Goya Black Beans onto skillet

  5. Wait about two minute until fully warmed.

  8. Turn off flame.

Tostasdos

  1. Spread small amount of bean paste of smoothly across tostados.

  2. Cut off small piece of Queso Blanco Cheese and crumble it across tostados.

  3. Enjoy!

Analysis

About ⅘ of my recipe can be considered processed, only the beans can be considered a whole food. I’m not sure what other outcome you expect when a recipe is supposed to be tied to family and culture yet somehow avoid processed foods when they’ve been used for decades.

Mostly all of my ingredients are made by Goya Foods located in America, the only exceptions being the Salt and Vegetable Oil which were made by separately. None of the ingredients were organically grown but all are domestic products. Every ingredient was processed from raw materials in a factory setting.

The entire meal costs less than $15 if all ingredients were purchased new, it costs even less since most items on the ingredient list are aleady in most households. It’s not that great of a price when compared to $5 meals I could purchase at fast food restaurants, say McDonald’s. But since all of the ingredients were manufactured domestically, the money would be going to the private companies that made them.

Overall this meal, or snack, takes less than half an hour to make and it’s very convenient to make since most of the ingredients were already in the house. As someone who comes from a low-income family that’s always strapped for time, this a very affordable dish. I prefered making this to a more expensive meal that would cost nearly triple to make if all the ingredients were bought organically.

First Quarter Works

Posted by Fatu Castillo in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 8:11 pm
My first piece, the Ceiling Tile, is one that I was moderately pleased with. I based the design off of Steven Universe, it represents an insignia featured in the show. I took the original design featured on the show, the four colored diamond, and added a flower with vines that strangled the original design. I surrounded the entire things with earthly colors, the colors of the flower and vines, to show that the original design was completely isolated. This reflects an event in the show that one wouldn't know unless they viewed it.
For my second piece, the Self Portrait, I decided to take my chances at drawing a cartoonish version of myself rather than a realistic portrayal. I have mixed feeling about the outcome of the piece. I wished that I had kept it in it's original pencil sketch, rather than adding color, and want to fix the hair so it looks more cartoonish. But I was very pleased with the facial structure and eyes.
