Jonathan- Printmaking- Element

My element was indium, atomic number 49.  Indium was discovered in 1863 by Ferdinand Reich and Theodor Richter. Indium is mostly used for components for devices or other technology, for example, it can be used for making a transistor. I researched and found that Indium is made up of space satellites, so that is what I made for my print. In the process of making the print, I drew rough sketches of my drawing, then traced my final drawing on to the printing plate, backward. After that I printed three different copies, it took me a lot of tries to get it right. If I were to do this again I would make my satellite way more detailed, I would add more satellite dishes, and make the solar panel, more detailed. My favorite part was printing, I really liked the suspense of seeing how the print was going to turn out.

What is Printmaking

Posted by Iman Ahmed in Art - Freshman · Hull · d2 Band on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 9:18 pm

Printmaking has been a form of art for thousands of years.
Lithography was invented by Bavarian author Aloys Senefelder in 1796 but printmaking itself originated in China after paper was invented around AD 105. Another type of printmaking is relief printing.Relief printing is done with carving while other printings are done on the surface. It is less modern because paper was invented a little bit after relief printing. Other methods include things like oil and water which is more complicated than relief printing. Printmaking was a revolutionary invention because It allowed people to make copies of art and have access to move it around. And also allowed for the creation of high-quality printed books. A huge factor in the establishment of a community of scientists who could easily communicate their discoveries through widely disseminated scholarly journals.

Here is an example of printmaking that was made in Japan...

This print was made by Hiroshige, the last Japanese master printer in the 19th century and died in 1858. This piece of art is presenting an ocean with huge waves about to wash the boats with people of both ends of the boats. I feel like this is very proportional to the colors. The background is a black and white with a small looking mountain but there is an ocean in front of it. It seems that the ocean was added to bring in life and color which might symbolize the importance of oceans in the Japanese culture. This is a very creative way to express complimenting colors and there might even be a story behind this print.

I Notice...

- Printmaking can be done in colors; there aren't many rules on how it should be.

-They tell stories in one captured moment.

I Wonder...

- How the inventor got this idea of printmaking

- If printmaking was harder to do then than now due to fewer resources

- What people used before printmaking

What If...

- People created a technique different from printmaking in more modern ways. Would people be just as hype about it?

-Where printmaking was made was made in a different location with a different culture.

MP1 Art Blog and Artist's Statement: Brooke

Printmaking is the process of producing multiple images. Prints are created from a single original surface, known technically as a matrix or a plate. Prints are multipliable, easy to transport and exhibit. Printmaking is important because of its unique techniques. This invention reduced the cost to reproduce printed material, and as such, its creation was one of the most influential events of the second millennium. Printmaking was revolutionary because it was an easier way for artists to express their art. It is also a way to duplicate their artwork without having to redo it.

This painting shows two koi fish that are swimming in a circle. These two fish represent Yin and Yang or La and Tui. One fish is black with a white circle and the other one is white with a black circle. The artists creates space by having the fish swim apart from each other. There are lines that outline the fish and tiny details. I think that this drawing is about Yin and Yang or La and Tui. La and Tui are two spirits that took the appearance of fishes and the same with yin and yang. I think that this is a good drawing because the artist really adds in good details. They also did really well with drawing the water splashes.

I noticed that the artist added in a lot of details for the fish scales.

I wonder if the artist was just drawing it because it would look nice, or if there is suppose to be a deep meaning.

What if there is a deep meaning behind this.

About printmaking

Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing. A lot of talented artist have found their place in printmaking. It still exist after years and years of being discovered. The process is believed to have been invented by Daniel Hopfer . In the mid-nineteenth century, Philadelphia became a leading center of printmaking in the United States. There are four main categories  relief, intaglio, lithography, and screenprinting.

This piece of art is made by Pablo Picasso called  “Figure Composee I”. Pablo Picasso is arguably one of the most well known and influential artists of the 20th century Pablo Picasso created about 200 lithographs from 1945 to 1949. I like this piece of art because it is very abstract. You don't really know what it is when you first look at it. It tells it's own story. It is very unique and different. I wonder what was the real reason why he made this and what inspired. I noticed that he made the faces connect by the noses and the faces are long.

Printmaking is making pictures or designs by printing them from plates or blocks. Printmaking is important because a lot of artists have found their place in printmaking. Also graffiti and street is a form of printmaking with stencils. Printmaking is revolutionary because it still exist after all the many cultural and technological changes over the years. I found this painting interesting because I found the print unique and the detail she used on the flowers and the moon.

I noticed that the setting of this print is at night.
I wonder what sparked the idea of artist to make this print.
What if the artist included people in this print to make the print even more engaging.

Printmaking and Why it is Important

Posted by Lillian Bromley in Art - Freshman · Hull · d2 Band on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 10:25 am

Printmaking is a form of art where the art can, create more than one of the same piece of art. A basic description of printmaking is transferring ink into a canvas (usually paper). These pieces are called prints. While an artist can create a similar image more than once, each print is slightly different, due to certain variables. That's why each print is considered an original and not a copy. The invention of printmaking was a revolutionary one because it allowed people to create several copies of one item without having to start from scratch for each one. The earliest form of printmaking was invented in China in AD 105. At this time it was likely used to print designs onto cloth and to print text and images on paper.

Untitled Print by Richard Mock

Description: This print shows an alligator in a body of water, with its jaw in the air, try to eat a dead bird hanging over it. You can see who men, one of them holding a gun, pointing it at the alligator and the other watching the whole thing happen. The bird seem to be bait for the alligator, and we can assume that the who men are hunters. Around the alligator there is a frog on a lily pad and a fish leaping in the air. The entire print is black and white.

Analyze: Since the print is only using black and white, it leaves the audience to really focus on what is happening. The whole thing is very bold, and the eye goes to the alligator first, as it is the biggest and darkest part of the print. The artist uses different thicknesses of lines to create contrast.

Interpret: I believe that this print is about the circle of life. It shows the alligator eating a bird, just as it is about to be killed itself. However, the print also speaks to the treatment of animals, and who gets to kill them. Everything in the water, around the alligator is real and alive, but everything on land is artificial.

Judgement: I think that this is a very good print, as it uses contrast. The print is overall very interesting, as I leaves the audience wondering what will happen next.

Nicco's Printing Blog

Printmaking is awesome. You start off with a printing slab, which you cut to your desires. You then ink the block, and then transfer that ink onto the paper. This allows for the reproduction of original art pieces, and cutting the printing slab differently allows for many different types of textures inaccessible from other art styles. That made it revolutionary, and it's been changed and updated repeatedly throughout history.

This is The Great Wave of Kanagawa by Hokusai. This has always been one of my favorite art pieces, and I have it hanging on my bedroom wall. With interesting textures and a sharp contrast of the waves and the sky, it's obvious why this print is so captivating. I wonder how Hokusai added so many different colors on a woodblock print. What if it were just a black-and-white print?

What is Printmaking? - Ethan McLeer

Printmaking is important because it led to technology advances. With printmaking, people could create currency, create pottery, and found ways to document information and send it out in mass production.

I found this print online. I like it because it it very basic but it also sets a very surreal and post-apocalyptic mood. I also like how clean the print marks are. Where the white does show through, it is meant to show through.

I Notice:

  • I notice that this is like a mirror image of itself. It is also inverted color on the other side.

I Wonder:

  • I wonder if the artist was trying to communicate anything to the viewer.

What If:

  • What if this is depicting something that the maker wants you to s

What is Printmaking and Why is it Important? Mo Kelly

Posted by Maureen Kelly in Art - Freshman · Hull · d2 Band on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 10:22 am

Printmaking is creating art from some kind of stamp. The stamp can be made of wood, linoleum, or any other material. Printmaking with stamps is called "relief printing". There are four more kinds of printmaking; intaglio, serigraphy, lithography and mono-printing. Each one is unique, but they carry the same basic concept.
Printmaking was one of the earliest forms on art found in the world. It was first found in the 6th century. It is believed to be invented by Daniel Hopfer, but many prints were found before the actual invention. The earliest form of printmaking was the woodcut. People slowly started to use different materials as the years passed. The invention of printmaking was revolutionary. You could make thousands of art pieces only using one stamp. Because there are so many different kinds of printmaking, if you don't like one kind, you could try another one. Anyone can make a print. All you need is a a material you can carve into, some kind of ink, and paper. It is very inexpensive. The invention of printmaking changed the world of art forever.

The print pictured above is a piece that interests me. The use of lighting is interesting is what makes this picture good. The moon produces the light and it shines on the objects. You can't tell what the objects are, exactly. It is up to the reader to decide what they think it is. Personally, I see a man sleeping next to a mountain and a boulder. But, my neighbor could see something completely different. Making the print black and white was a bold choice. It sets the tone for the picture and making it have colors would change the meaning completely. The detailed lines are eye catching. This picture was found in "The Art of Printmaking" exhibit in Lehigh University Art Galleries.
