Lobbying Post #1.

Posted by Courtni Matthews in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 3:41 pm

I am lobbying to change the way the process of restraining orders are handled and who has access and rights to them. The motivation behind this comes from a personal experience of not only being stalked but threatened and being overwhelmed with just wanting freedom and peace from the situation. However Iw as told I couldn't do anything about it and that a restraining order was not available for my situation. The main supporters of my Idea so far are only other citizens who have gone through a similar situation. The main opponents of the idea are basically everyone who issues them and is comfortable with the law of restraining orders. From researching I have yet to  find any pending legislation on this topic or issue . I would love to see a piece of legislation declaring that If someone has been threatened or stalked and  can prove so they should have legal freedom from having to see or deal with the person . For example if the person is following  you and you can prove it , then go to the police the person should suffer sentencing or if anything a fine.

(Blog Post 3)

The status of my issue isn't fully clear but it doesn't seem that it's on the top of the to-do list. On the city council website there are either broken links or misdirected pages to say who's working on what topics and what the facts are.

For my particular topic the main supporters or allies would be the non-profit organizations that either are in support of shelters or provide the supplies for the shelters. These people care and they are amazing advocates but more importantly they have invested in the well being of the homeless and that makes this topic something they can't just wake up one morning and walk away from like a politician can. Surprisingly my representative Darrell L. Clarke is on the board for ethics, safety and housing and homeless. However in my district alone I witness countless amounts of people everyday sleeping on the sidewalk.

Broken down by congressional districts, the Philadelphia area ranks in the top 2 highest homeless population percentages.

Representative Robert Brady & Chaka Fattah, are responsible for these districts and if this information was more widely know I think the representatives would feel a bigger need for change. I think the people to be influenced are the people who dont' realize these things are going on.

Tariq & Ryan Bureacracy flow

Posted by Anonymous in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11:18 pm

The bureaucratic 'task' that I chose was the process of applying for what is known as food stamps. Food stamps are for families that have much financial difficulty and allow them to purchase food and other items with stamps that are issued to them by the government. The process to apply for food stamps was rather simple I filled out a rather lengthy application in which I was required to identify the current living situation that I resided in. The paperwork was relatively simple to understand and rather straightforward. If I had the opportunity to change something about the process that I flow charted, I would have the entire process be online as well as paper so that you may be able to access it without going through the process of retrieving the physical paperwork. In my opinion, I believe that the systems have become so complicated because they want be certain that people who actually deserve it receive its benefits and not someone who may either potentially be lying or doesn't deserve it as much as someone else.

Ryan Francis Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Ryan Francis in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 8:24 am

  • Why did you choose this topic?'
I wanted to make a song and a music video displaying my ability to exercise my 1st amendment right to freedom of speech. By doing so in the song, I said a lot of things that people would be able to make a discussion out of with their own set of ideas

  • What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?
I liked the challenge to go above and beyond the usual history project. it gave us a chance to be creative and effective, and have our own say on why we appreciate certain laws in the constitution
  • Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.
"The Freedom of the Press provides little, or no, additional protection than the Freedom of Speech itself, because the Court has worried that a "reporter's privilege" would be too difficult to define" I found this interesting, because I formally thought that reporters could talk about whatever they wanted in stories
  • Where did you run into trouble with the project?

Getting the project onto the course blog -_-, that was the most challenging part, because we had internet problems, FLV converter problems, and all of that. Our process was spot on though.
  • What went well with this project?
When we got our ideas together, we flew off and finished the project easily. I finished the song, and Tariq & Jason and I filmed and edited the video. It was also successful for us to work with someone who's not even in our class. Jason was part of the D-Band AmGOV class
  • If you had it to do over, what would you change about your decisions or your process?
If I could do it over, I woud take more of an academic approach to the project, instead of trying so hard to be creative and to stand out among the other projects. We kind of made a music video surrounding the C-Sband footage
  • What did you learn?
I learned that I can be creative when it comes to history projects, and that not all history projects have to be boring, a lot of reading and hard to focus on. During this semester of AMGOV, Ive learned that I can make engaging projects in which people hold interest in, and in which people can really look at and have a lot to talk about with it.

This is a small project that was done surrounding the issue of illegal domestic spying and what exactly caused the NSA (National Security Agency) to go from looking and tapping into calls coming from foreign countries to being able and going around tapping into any cellular device even emails on occasion looking for a "domestic threat". This is meant to give a brief inside into a specific piece of a bigger idea surrounding the privacy of the American People; this also goes against the 4th amendment which states that without a warrant appointed by a three-judge court a search a seizure can't be performed.

Why did you choose this topic?:

Me and my partner chose this project because it was something that we could relate to because we actually have all kinds of crazy electronics and we didn't think something like this could happen, i just think this is crazy period.

What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?

I liked how we actually went along with our project. We learned a lot just by doing our project and it made us realize that we got to be careful at all times when we're on a computer or a cell phone. It was very challenging when we we're looking for the exact points and information we could use so that it would be relevant to what we were trying to convey in our video, but other then that i believe that my partner and i did a great job on our project and we got things done successfully.

Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.
The most interesting fact that we found was during one of the court cases the judge in the case went back to square one with one of the heads of the NSA asking him to briefly talk about what it was this was intended to do and in doing so never really denied the fact that they never asked for a warrant to be issued to tap into phones that weren't foreign

How could this project be improved?

I think that this project could be improved by showing more details and making our interviews longer and the video could've been longer as well.

Where did you run into trouble with the project?
We had trouble when we was trying to look for where exactly the different points and clips should be placed because we had so many to use and so many that went with each other, it was hard at times to actually pick out which clip would actually convey a message, there were so many good answers to our key but we had trouble trying to see if it was really good or not.

What went well with this project?

I thought that our interviews went well because we had so many different answers to our questions, i also thought the videos went good as well because even thought we didn't use a camera from school the videos still look like we did and they were clear and the sound was where we wanted it to be.

If you had it to do over, what would you change about your decisions or your process?
I really wouldn't change anything because i thought the interviews we did with a couple of students at school was really good and it was a good thing that we got to ask them what they thought about the whole problem because i already knew that some of the students was going to be surprised at the fact that we were being spied on, so it was good that we had that in our video.

What did you learn?

I learned about how the government has complete power to do whatever.

StudentCam Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Samuel Sirochman in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Here is a link to my benchmark.

I chose Internet Censorship, because it would stifle my growth as a student and person. I think access to the internet really allows me to learn about anything I want on the spot, it's learning from a different, more independent way. I really liked the idea of the project, just taking an issue and finding out why it is related to the constitution, I thought trying to explain what internet censorship was hard. Mostly, because everything on the internet is copied, stolen, or borrowed-and-cited. I think the most interesting fact was learning about how they define internet piracy. This project could be improved, by giving checkpoints, although that seems like its childish and students don't want that. This is a project that sneaks up on you, you think you have it under control, then all of a sudden you need video of this, that and the next thing. I ran into trouble with managing my time, because I also had a math benchmark so I was trying to finish that and still pay attention to this project and it just didn't work as well as expected. I think the editing of our video went better than expected, I tried really hard to incorporate my voice as the back bone, the pictures were going to hopefully help tell the story and incorporating the video from the guardians made it feel more complete. I think I would take a different concept for the video, if I was to do it again. I would ideally interview a number of people so the voices change it keeps it fresh. I learned a lot about Sopa and Pipa, and how the government view the internet and how they plan to handle piracy. I thought the government was just letting it go, even though they knew it was bad.

History Benchmark Q2- Women's Rights

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Link to my video:

http://www.schooltube.com/video/94e0f18067e246029059/

I chose this topic because women's rights is something important to me, as well as a delicate subject. I wanted my project to serve as a reminder of all of the hardships women have gone through in the past in order to be seen as equal. What I like the most about the project is the examples of historical women I've used as examples as well as all of the background research. Something that was challenging in creating this project was picking the perfect sound track and the format in which to present it. One of the most interesting things I came across was the fact that women almost gave up on equal rights several times as well as during WW1. I feel that this project could improve with more description. I did not put as much words in the final presentation as I originally planned. Something new that I tried was using C-Span for this project and I feel that it could have gone better. Overall I really enjoyed this project I felt that it was a very nice change and it really resonated with me. I  now value women's more then ever.

History Quater 2 Benchmark Reflection - Student Rights (See Sean Moss Page for Blog)

Posted by Jesse Weinberg in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 12:01 pm

For my final benchmark in American Government I choose to do Freedom of Speech. Freedom of Speech is located in the first amendment. It is important to have freedom of speech because it allows the person how to express how they feel.  This is a right that not should be taken away from any one. Going back and doing this process I feel that more time should have been put into the project and the communication should have been alot better, however it is not a person fault if they do not get internet half the time.  Other then the technical problems I feel like my partner and I worked very well together and also I was keeping up with him to make sure the work was getting done in a timely matter.  How this could have improved was that we should have added more people then what we had. We should have gone to other schools and asked more of outside people. If i was to do this project again i would not change the process. what I learned is that you shouldn't take away people's freedom of speech and that everyone has a right to this. What went well with this is that it was turned in on a timely matter. The most interesting fact was that was defended in alot of cases. What i liked about the project was that it was creative and made us use out people. what i didn't like was that there was alot of technical problems with uploading
