Michelle Torelli, Capstone 2013

Posted by Michelle Torelli in Capstone - Herman on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 10:36 pm

Mentors(s): Ms.Echols, VK

Plastics are essential throughout the world. There are no alternatives other than polymerized materials. Changes can be made to the current practices of plastics. Experiments were held to test durability, bond energy, and surface/optimizing calculations to make biodegradable water bottles. I chose this project because not only for my passion for engineering, but my passions for revolutionizing our world through different lenses. Whether it be language, bottles, engineering, etc; the world can change. I really enjoyed this project because I can use my skills that I've learned at SLA and implement it in my capstone, something that SLA encourages for all its students. Attached will be a single link.

Patriot Act Editorial

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 9:31 pm

The Patriot Act is probably one of the most complicated laws passed in American history; it was a necessity. America was in danger- with events leading up to attacks- something needed to be done. Reactions of the government were straight to the point, under immense pressure, they needed to ensure the people’s safety which lead to the law being passed so quickly. Some may say that we give the government too much power, but I believe it suffices our safety- better safe than sorry.

On September 11, 2001 two planes crashed into the Twin Towers, leading the citizens of America into chaos. There was never an Act allowing the government to tap into services of anyone to stop any danger. Once 9/11 happened the vision of safety for America changed dramatically for the better. Anti-terrorism safety precautions are necessary even today, with all the new technologies out in the world we may even need to “fine-tune” the act.

The government’s ability to tap into anyone’s services may be upsetting to some people, but we do need to consider that citizens of this very country can be high-risk criminals. There are countless benefits of the Patriot Act applying to anti-terrorism conditions and other organized crimes within the country, for example, gang violence.

Overall, the Patriot Act should remain a law in the United States of America to ensure the safety of citizens. The government must have all the power when it comes to keeping their citizens in safe, if not, then all chaos would break loose and there would be no support for the country.

Blog Post 1: Enemy of the State

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American Government - Herman on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 10:10 pm
This film truly made me think about the society that we live in now- full of fear. The government is capable of hiding things from the public from corrupted actions such as portrayed in the film. The government in the film is demonstrated as a no-good criminal in which can over power all civilians; no one is safe, especially when one tries to do something for the right of mankind.

There must be restrictions on the people of the US, but that leaves so much room for corruption. This may sound controversial, but I personally believe the government should have access to all records of privacy but the access cannot be granted without evidence or complete urgency of the threat to the country. Citizens can sometimes pose a threat to the country rather than outsiders.

Quantum Field Theory Website (InTheMaking)

Posted by Michelle Torelli in Physics - Echols on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 2:34 pm
Copy and paste the link below to see my informational website about quantum field theory!

sla-soccer.sites.emr.ge/quantum-field-theory.html

My website is still in the making as I want to keep building it throughout the summer but the main essence of my project was two aspects combined into one. The two aspects are Computer Science (Coding) and Quantum Field Theory. I made this website to briefly explain these main components of quantum field theory, "Equations", "Helpful Resources", "Father's of Quantum Physics". Furthermore, even though I do not understand multivariable calculus and other concepts to comprehend quantum field theory fully, I still explained the gist of the theory.

Summer Reading Recommendation 2012

Posted by Michelle Torelli in English 3 - Rami on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 11:48 pm
For those of you interested in the secrets of the world involving physics you will absolutely love this book, "Black Bodies and Quantum Cats" written by Jennifer Ouellette! Inside this book there are many analyses of everyday movies and events that we see everyday but do not take the consideration to examine deeper meanings within them. When you read this book there is no choice other than to keep flipping the pages and continue reading. I highly recommend this book to not only physic's lovers but also to those who want to learn things "outside the box". Furthermore, this very book will change the way you view life as it goes into detail from large concepts to minuscule details of the world around us.

What If? Benchmark

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 9:50 am
My awesome website that I created with yola!

I really enjoyed this project. The topic of my project revolved around the Space Race; previous history states that USA had captured German rocket personnel, giving them the advantage to win the Space Race (Landing on the Moon first) against Russia. My point of divergence for this project was "What if USA captured decoy German rocket personnel."

Through my point of divergence you will see complete chaos and total change for what the USA and Russia has become for 2012. I briefly explained and tied in primary sources, both prior and post, to my point of divergence. The future that I envisioned of my POD was for the Russians to land on the moon first. Nevertheless, the USSR to remain together and would become the most wealthiest economy in the world due to their findings on the moon. Also, the USSR would gain partnerships of other countries (China and Japan) to support them in creating advanced technologies for the market.

I liked everything about this project, specifically the creativity and openness we were given to choose what we wanted to do and how we could create the final product. The most difficult aspect of this projects was successfully tying everything together in an appealing matter. Also, creating primary source documents were difficult because of the detail required to connect with my POD.

The American Dream: Year 2100, Destruction.

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 9:57 am
In the early stages of the American Dream, everyone wanted horses, then cars, but in the future the discovery of the God Particle will happen and all humanity will go crazy. The God Particle will show the scientific side of how everything is about but those with religion will become angry and confused. In the year 2100 there will be NOTHING, but war and hatred.

Energy Transformations by Michelle Torelli & Mohamed Marzouk

Posted by Michelle Torelli in Physics - Echols on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 12:01 am
RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTS:

Through research we encountered a variety of experiments to gain knowledge of our topic, Energy Transformations. We gathered that there is Potential, Kinetic, and Elastic energy. In one simple experiment of dropping a ball both factors of Potential and Kinetic was shown. When the ball is in the air Potential (gravity) is stored, once released the ball's energy transforms from potential to kinetic as kinetic energy becomes greater as the stored (potential) energy is transferred. Another experiment done was of a catapult launching an object through the air. Depending on the structure of the catapult there is Elastic energy within a spring-like material to then launch the object, the transfer of energy is from Elastic to Kinetic but may be dissipation where some of the energy is wasted due to friction.

HOW TO SHOW THROUGH QUALITATIVE DATA:

There are several ways to express Energy Transformations through visuals such as LOL diagrams and pie charts. LOL diagrams are diagrams showing Initial Energy, The Flow of Energy, and Final Energy. Pie Charts represent qualitative and/or quantitative of how the energy is being transferred.

Example 1: (LOL diagram)
Scenario: Free Fall of a Ball = Potential (gravitational) to Kinetic (before the ball comes in contact with another force)
lolgraph

Example 2: (Pie Chart)
Scenario: Catapult Launching an Object = Elastic energy becomes kinetic over time
piechartz

GENERAL UNDERSTANDING:

Overall, Energy Transformation "is the process of changing energy from one form to another." Energy Transformation is in everyday life from dropping a ball to sliding down a playground slide. Energy can be potential (stored), kinetic (moving)
elastic (spring constant), dissipation (lost), and radiation(waves). Throughout the process of energies changing there can be more than one in existence. For example you may have a dart shoot into a ceiling and then remain in place due to initially the dart had kinetic energy then one hits the ceiling dissipated energy but also has some potential (gravitational) energy.

4. An example of the types of questions (multiple choice) related to your topic that might appear on the PSSA with an explanation of how you can decide on the correct answer.

A child kicked a soccer ball. How is energy being transferred?

A) Potential (Gravitational)
B) Kinetic
C) Dissipation
D) Radiation

Explanation: Since the ball is in motion the only logical answer is Kinetic.

What units is energy measured in?

A) Newtons
B) Kilograms
C) Joules
D) Pounds

Explanation: With process of elimination; Newtons measures force, kilograms measures mass, and pounds measures weight with the only option left is "Joules".

Which energy transformation is used to cook food in a microwave?

A) Radiation
B) Dissipation
C) Friction
D) Gravity

Explanation: Radiation travels in waves which cooks food in a microwave its a type of heat. Choices B,C, and D are irrelevant.

Sound is _______ energy?

A) Heated
B) Dissipated
C) Cold
D) Kinetic

Explanation: When sound is distributed it transforms into nothing more than just rhythms or syllables to our ears. When energy is not transferred than it is lost; dissipated.

Tennessee Coal Ash Spill Reflection

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 1:33 pm

What went well?-
Our group collaborated and brought different ideas together which was very helpful to get the job done easily.

What didn't go well?-
There were some things that didn't go well such as keeping pictures for information rather than a lot of words to describe the facts.

What would you do differently next time?-
Next time we should add more pictures and a scale.

Which of these areas did you excel in? Which were not so well represented? Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?
We excelled in getting our message across in a creative way. It was difficult to include all information in such a visual way. Some elements are easier because we can add pictures but the difficult part is to have a dynamic layer of information within the visual for the end product.

NHD 3rd Quarter Benchmark

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, March 9, 2012 at 1:50 pm
For our 3rd Quarter Benchmark we needed to have a topic of choice and combine the themes of NHD into our choice of topic and create a documentary, website, or performance. I chose Revolutionary Science as my topic along with making a documentary between Newton and Einstein.
Excerpt of my research:

"There have been many physicists that changed people’s point of views of the Earth. Isaac Newton discovered his three laws of motion that have been taught using the language of forces and pulls. He enlightened people’s questions about how and why physical objects behave the way they do on Earth. The atomic bomb’s equation, also known as Einstein’s “E=mc^2” was a profound discovery of the 20th century. Although that discovery was both great and destructive he has made  the theory of relativity, which changed the way people think about time and space drastically."

Sobre de las películas de las mujeres

Posted by Michelle Torelli in Spanish 5 - Gierke on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Business Reflection Unit

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American History - Laufenberg on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 11:17 pm

1.Explain your choice of presentation

-We (Natalee and I) chose a video because we wanted to be creative. We both never done a video for history class so we figured to do something new. We also felt that it would (having made a video) better express out information we had about the presidents and their policies in relations with the government to make change.

2.Two sentences answering your EQ

"What causes systematic and individual change?"

-Systematic change happens when the country of that system is suffering and needs change for the better. Individual change is of the president (in this scenario) to reflect on their actions to do what's right for that country and providing stability.

3. What questions do you still have about business in America?

-Will businessmen/women, those who are the 1%, ever pay their fair share of taxes?

Time Capsule (Short Sci-Fi Story)

Posted by Michelle Torelli in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 12:01 pm
TIME CAPSULE
“There has been a new experiment of Time Travel by Kirb Gluten, scientist of  England, who is here with us in Philadelphia, as he will be giving a public speech to young scientists in the Central Library of Philadelphia, to describe his ideas with the public of America, without further ado now over to you Kirb” CNN reports.
“Well thank you, as I must say...”
“Turn this off now Berto, go play outside or something before it gets too dark!” my mother declared with fury.
“I have to finish homework Ma’ I don’t have to play outside.” I screamed as I run up the steps and went into my room.
I guess she will or no one will ever understand, besides Kirb, about everything of time and space... I wish the world was a better place, I mean... it is but I wish people could appreciate science more rather than sports and all that nonsense... It is freezing in here...!
“Mai’!”
“What Berto!?”
“It’s freezin’!”
“Oh well! Goodnight, sleep under your sheets!”
“C’mon Ma’!”
….
Of course she doesn’t answer me, as always... Whatever, I’m not going to bed, I need to still change the capsule on the wall in the bathroom but first I NEED to finish watching the news snippet. I get up off my bed as it shrieks, tip toeing to the door, turn the knob and out I went. Skipping a few steps of the stairs, plopped onto the couch, as I then quickly turn the TV on. Yes! Kirb is still on TV!....
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” my mom gasps in fear, I hear the distinct tone in her voice.
I drop my remote and jetted up the steps, bursting through the door I see a 12 year-old girl with clothes seeming extra large and tears trickling down her face.
“Mom why... What?!.. How did this happen!?”
“Who are you?!, I don’t know what happened, one moment I was staring into the hole of this wall then I was chatting with my grandmother and playing cards!, I want to go back!”
“Why did you look into the hole in the wall?! That’s my time machine that has so many side effects...please Mom, stop crying!” I was so nervous, I had to extract the titanium and place it in the aluminum container so my mom would not catch gaze on it again.
“Who is mom?! I’m Ella, who the heck are you!?”
“Nothing, no one, just listen to me, you’re my mom but you just forgot everything because you used my time machine...” my palms were drowning with sweat, I knew there was only a little time until the side effects of the time machine would kick in on my mom.
“So the hole is a time machine? I just peaked, I don’t understan..” her voice cracked as tears poured down her face even more.
“Forget about it, we need to go find Kirb, the scientist who has the same structure as my machine.”
She didn’t say a word...Not one single syllable as she just followed me out the door, down the steps, and outside into the night well dawn almost. We were walking so fast, it felt like we were running, but I could not run, the side effects would take in more heavily on my mom if we did so. We were almost at the Central Library, Kirb always starts early, everyone is fascinated with his work, I hope I get his attention. We walked through the pathway, and up the steps of the library. Then, I began banging on the door as I saw Kirb. I signaled him to come over, he had the most puzzled, scared look on his face as he hesitated to open the back door. He would NOT take his eyes off my mother, I slowly turned my head and came to find a 5-year old with red eyes as my mother. I quickly picked her up, over my shoulders, as Kirb opened the door.
“You...my boy, have a lot of explaining to do, I understand what you’re going through, hurry before she becomes deformed..”
“Sir, Mister, K..K...Kirb, this is my mother, there has to be something, she only has about 10 minutes left, my side effects...” I could not stop trembling, I felt as if there was a knot in my throat.
“Which element did you use?”
“Umm..Titanium 101x, I meant to adjust it before I went to bed but..” I could not even finish my sentence as my body became weak with anxiety.
“Hurry, to the auditorium..grab your mom and just throw her into the machine.”
“What?!”
“No time for questions, throw her in the machine and I will follow with the titanium so I can identify which part of time period she was in...Did she say anything when she came to our era?”
“She was playing cards with her grandmother.”
We did not speak much further as we ran into the auditorium, I threw my mother and Kirb actually caught her while entering the portal. Within milliseconds my mom returned back to normal and Kirb then came exactly one minute later.
“Mama!”
“Berto!”
“Wow, my head hurts, as I said boy you have a LOT of explaining to do..”
“Thank you Kirb!”
“Berto, what are you thanking him for?”
“For saving you.”
She gave me a puzzled, loving smile and replied, “Go outside and play, Berto.”

Here is where you can access my awesome paper:

Here is where you can access the whole project:

We collaborated as a group talking about our different ideas. We also did additional research as a group to provide evidence with our ideas. The role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is thinking outside the box and to go on and make a difference by speaking one's opinion on how they view a problem.I understand that our country is a democracy but not completely because through research some rights are still not given. To make the most appealing with facts and information yet appealing to the audience's eye.

Election Day !

Posted by Michelle Torelli in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 8:15 pm
Q1: Do you vote in every election?

A1: Yes, every election since I was able to vote.

Q2: What motivated you to come out and vote?

A2: I like to take part in the political process even though it might not make a big difference.

Q3: What would you like to see change in the political system?

A3: The main thing I would like to see change in the interaction between corporations and government. I believe the corporations have too much access into swaying politics. Also campaigns lobby which is a lot of money involved.

Q4: Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

A4: It all depends. I usually vote all one party for the general election. It is a little more complicated one it comes to the primaries because it's hard to research local candidates due to terrible websites because not enough money, though ironically local elections effect the most, in my personal opinion.

Q5: What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

A5: I doubt anything will change but extending existing bike lanes would be nice.

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

Immigration Data on Prezi

What surprised me the most about this information was that there was a lot of different reasons for the immigration rates throughout the years of American history. What's quite obvious was there were a lot of hardships in other countries causing them to flee to a better country that could provide money, jobs, and education which was America. Though there were problems within America itself there were not as much immigrants arriving but there were always some for each decade.

Many ups and downs occurred in the numbers of immigrants arriving to America, but there are also many push and pull factors. With our the recession currently going on in America the trend expresses that we may go down due to the recession, job cuts more than ever before.

My group and I had a difficult time of picking the best way to present our information visually. We eventually decided to do Prezi because it is an easy layout and very fun to do. The most difficult part of the group work was including all different pictures and everyones separate part of decades into one project. There is nothing I would like to change with my project because I am very happy with my final product.

I am from humblesness
form music and laughter
I am from hard work and strength
(delicious smells, friendly hearted)
I am from the empire state of mind
the city that never sleeps, the multi-
cultural people i'd see will forever stand in
my memories.
I;m from the skies, grown up with lies,
that not everybody is a friend but an enemy
My family comes from dopey, grumpy, and doc
too funny, close-minded, and old
I'm from the South Americas
from eating empanadas, hot chocolate and
home made bread, from the sweats ,y
father took, and the screams my mother cried
Above the thoughts my father had, there
lied silence a man who had to learn a total different language

I am from love  a family who will always stay strong
i am from ambitious a young woman who has come to this country to succeed

Humanities Portfolio 2011

Posted by Michelle Torelli in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 7:57 am
Throughout the courses of both History and English this year had has its ups and downs. History and English, as subjects, have always been easy for me but this year through my projects, papers, wikis, essential questions and more… has changed my views on the topics of each subject.

In English, I noticed throughout my work that I have become a more fluent writer in writing my papers. My aspects of me to have became a more fluent writer includes, being able to pull several significant quotes from books I have read and outside sources from research. Also, analyzing throughout my paper, the quotes, my feelings and beliefs into thesis papers. Stating the facts with being stated in opinion form at first was very hard for me, but through practice of constantly writing and peer editing helped me a lot, it bettered me because of the helped I received by my teachers and friends. Click here to view my latest thesis paper about religion and the world

Within this paper I, as I stated before, express several beliefs and stating that they are true. In my 9th grade year and beginning of this 10th grade year, I had a harder time formatting and making my thesis papers clear by using well thought-out quotes.

            Something that I grasped over this year was that there are many certain aspects that aren't talked about everyday. Click here to view my work of both my op-ed ;and now my monologue project ;

Throughout my op-ed I express different corruptions throughout the world such as the religious people and leaders abusing humanity laws, here is a quotes I stated of my own words “A priest of a catholic church has been accused of sexually abusing a young little boy. To point that we are talking about a Catholic church who provide us with a Catholic religion in which the bible says “homosexuality is against God.”

On the other hand, my monologue project was a long projects and included several aspects of thinking rather than the op-ed yet they are both similar and I learned a lot from both of them. Though, to begin, my monologue project brought several ideas of both imagination and research. I learned a lot form my monologue project because over the several months that we were given to work on it, I developed a well thought-out story about children and sex trafficking throughout Europe in an interesting, unique way.

            A major benchmark, one of my most recent one is of my Colonial Benchmark which can be seen here ;

I express many different aspects of colonialism. Through my research I learned a lot and in making this museum, which was the goal of making this benchmark, using different artifacts and stating facts and also giving opinion with supporting evidence that “overall colonialism is better for a country because it is influenced by more cultures and as the country grows older there is a more variety.”

Furthermore, I’d like to save this for the last, my wiki of my poetry, because it was my most favorite project to do. I believe I can express myself more with writing poems and giving information rather than papers because it flows more easier to me and I believe a lot of other people may believe the same way. Click here to view my poetry wiki.
