Elisa, Marina, and Markia Election Country Project

Posted by Marina Stuart in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 10:53 am
When we first picked our country we knew that Elisa’s father had connections in Venezuela. After asking him to contact them and give us their emails, we informed them about our project and what exactly we needed from them. We emailed them the questions that we needed answered. Luckily one of the contacts had a child that was happy to help, they interviewed people on behalf and emailed us the product. Below is the transcripts in english, of all of the interviews.

Unconventional Teacher Fund Raising in Philadelphia

Posted by Marina Stuart in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 9:33 pm
By Marina Stuart and Jason Davis

For this project we worked to tell the untold story of unconventional teacher fund rasing in Philadelphia. From microgrant dinners to parent initiated car washes, people invested in education in Philly and doing a lot to continue financing the school district. One of the most challenging things about the project was choosing which stories to tell because there are so many people doing great things to fund their schools. This kind of story doesn't receive a lot of attention because most people only want to hear about how much the school district is losing and simply the hard numbers. I hope this story and those involved get more attention soon because it is important for the citizens of Philadelphia to know that individuals are doing whatever they can to continue education here. I learned about how much people care about students in the city and has given me some hope for the future.

Trees: Lorax Style

Screen Shot 2012-05-25 at 2.33.42 PM

For my project I worked with the building owners of Science Leadership Academy  to get permission to submit an application to the Philadelphia Department of Recreation to get trees planted on the 2100 block of Arch St.  Before I appealed to the building owners I first took a tree tenders class from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to further my knowledge of trees and to provide more credibility for why I wanted these trees planted. After I met with the building manager and convinced him that what I was doing was something good and would not affect him negatively, the trees were planted and now are growing well. For the future I am working with other SLA seniors to incorporate tree caring into an ILP for next year. As of now the city it taking care of the trees but next year it is up to the owners.  This process is one that I have really enjoyed and means a lot to me. I wanted to leave SLA a better and greener place and now I have fulfilled my goal!

Collapse Project: Mongolia Vs. El Salvador

Posted by Marina Stuart in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 9:14 am
cropped-picture-111

The countries I studied where Mongolia in East Asia and El Salvador in Central America. They are very different at first but once one studies their problems and learns more about them, the similarities come through.

I primarily researched articles and government websites to learn about the issues in each country. I decided to challenge myself and create a wordpress site to convey my information.

I did not have that much trouble working with the five point framework and basing my research around it, however when it came to ranking the countries I had a difficult time being objective.

If I could do this project over again, I would include more links and pictures in my site, and maybe make it slightly more creative. If I didn't do a site I think I would have done something along the lines of a narrated race and the rankings being how well each country was doing in the race and that would determine who won.

World of 100 Analysis

Posted by Marina Stuart in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 1:36 pm

In this graphic, we are seeing how many people would have good or bad drinking water. What stands out is that in reality only 13 people would have improvised water instead of the 50 or so that myself and the class thought.

This graphic is about how many people would get secondary education. It seems that I did not give enough credit to the general people because my estimates were way off of those of the researchers. The class is seems was also off but not to the extent I was. Despite all the news about uneducated children in other counties The amount of people in the world with education is much larger with those without. In fact it is a kind of comforting notion.

This last graphic is about literacy by gender. In this one again both myself and the class were off in our estimates but the fact is that many people in the world do know how to read and we underestimated them. I think that truly we do not give enough credit to people in other countries, these numbers show that a significant percentage of the world can read.

Overall, between my answers and the correct ones I was not very close with my estimations. The ones I was closet on were religion, gender, and technology.  One catagory that surprised me was that the gender division would be 50/50. I didn't think the world was that even. I think the reason I was so off with my prediction is I don't think I have a complete understanding of the world and I need to understand other countries more. I think I have a very media skewed view, where most of my information comes from how other countries are perceived and not from actual fact.

Laughter-Marina Stuart

Posted by Marina Stuart in Reading, Writing, and Rising Up - Rami on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 9:11 pm

My product is a print advertisement for Laughter. Laughter is something that is in need in the world today, we have wars, poverty, homelessness, and other depressing things. This advertisement it so remind people to laugh, be happy, and appreciate the little things in life.

The intended audience is well, everyone. There is no set age, race, or class that this is aim towards, it is for everyone.  The advertisement aims to include most demographics, including age, race, and gender.

The inspiration of this ad came from usual medicine ads. Most ads for medicine include lots of people liked their new medication but the side effects of the ads usually are worse then the illness they are trying to cure. For example some allergy ads have the side effect of a stroke...thats just not right. That is why the ads has a humorous warning label, to make fun of usual medicine ads, and perhaps make people laugh.

This ad is also effective because of the quote used at the top of the ad. "I love to laugh, loud and long, and clear" That quote is from Mary Poppins, almost every person knows that line and reminds them of a simpler time and a movie that most kids love.

If this ad could be redone I think the pictures would focus more of the people's faces and but more laughter centric, or perhaps have humorous pictures of animals or toys, to simply funny things.

Why I Write

Posted by Marina Stuart in Reading, Writing, and Rising Up - Rami on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 8:11 pm
Why do you write?

I don't know

It's a way to save my ideas,

my make-believe stories of worlds that live in my head have a home on paper

It organizes my thoughts,

Those family trees of my characters, their ages, interests, secrets, dreams.

I write to remember,

So my ideas won't be jumbled up in the every day thoughts that occupy my mind like a nebulous shroud.

I write to give information

I write so a form of my ideas can be shared with others

That is why I write.

The beauty of writing, thats another reason.

The scratching of a pencil

The swoosh of a pen

the click clack of keys

For some it sounds right, similar to the sound of a cleat hitting a soccer ball or the swish of a ball going through a basket.

It belongs.

That beauty is something that cannot be replaced

That is why I write.

I write because I love it

It feels right,

My gut tells me this is what I was meant to do

It is one of the oldest forms of communication

yet through the years it has never been replaced by any other technology.

No one can upgrade writing

for it's strength and stubbornness

I revere it.

Thats why I write.

Rockets score big against Kensington

Posted by Marina Stuart on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 9:49 pm
On Oct 7th the SLA boys soccer team played an amazing game against Kensington High School.  This was the second game against Kensington and a critical win for the playoffs.  The boys beat Kensington 6-2 with goals scored by Dan Wirt (#3) and Seamus Kirby (#5).  Wirt scored five of the goals, two were intercepted miss kicks by the Kensington goalie, one was a breakaway shot, one was done from an assist by Will Felinski (#11), and the last one was a penalty shot.  Kirby scored his goal off a breakaway shot in the beginning of the second half.

The defense played a especially stupendous game only letting seven shots on goal which Doug Wallace (Goalie) saved five of. Usually Wallace's save count is about 30.  A difference in this game from others played was that the midfield players completely controlled the middle of the field which gave the forwards more scoring opportunities. This change probably came from Coach VK's position changes and adding more defensive and offensive midfielders. Overall congratulations to the SLA Soccer team and good luck in next weeks games!

Mstuart Quarter 4 Benchmark

Here is a link to my website which tells the story of what life would be like if congress had not passed the Us Copyright Term Extension Act in 1998.

Reflection:
Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.
-One of the most interesting facts was that many classic disney characters would have gone into public domain and would have been able to be ued by anyone.  Also lots of other works would have gone in too, such has Gone With The Wind and Early Ernest Hemingway works
How do the actions of individuals impact the historical record?
-In the real world the law would have never been passed if not for the work of Mary Bono, wife of Sonny Bono who originally wanted the bill.  If not for their actions, and those of Disney my hypothetical situation might have come true.
How do systemic changes impact the historical record?
-In my hypothetical situation, one of the main reason the law did not pass was because the public was against it for seeming to unconstitutional. Even though in real times this happened it was not to such a great extent that it stopped the law from passing.
How influential can one decision be in the historical landscape?
Hugely influential, with out some key acts in history, events could be drastically changed. One good vvisual example of this was in the movie "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button" Where he goes through the last five minutes before someone got hit by a car and all the way it could have been avoided.
How could this project be improved?
I believe if we had been allowed to use the 60's era there would have been more events to choice from.  However I enjoyed the project and think it's really great.
If you had it to do over, what would you change about your process for the project?
I would have chosen an event that had a greater impact of society then mine.  I also would have something older.

Marina's Musical Instrument Blog #2

Posted by Marina Stuart in Physics - Echols on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 7:59 pm

The sound is created by the vibration of the molecules inside the actual pipes, which is what the xylophones are made out of.  The pitch changes when you hit different keys because each key is a different size and thus creates a different sound.  The instument is played by being hit with a mallet.  i plan to create the xylophone out of either PBC piping or metal pipes.  The  have them laying on a wood structure that makes them easy to play.

The instrument I want to create is a xylophone.. It is played my hitting the different sized keys with a mallet.  The note changes depending on which size key you hit, there are 16 usually, two for each note but in different octaves. It looks like a small piano except the keys are bigger and there are no strings in the back. I do not think it will be to hard to make i just need to cut the material I am using for the keys into the correct size. I am not sure how waves connect to this but I am sure there is a reason.

Tennessee Coal Ash Spill

a. What went well?
-What went well was the amount and quality of the research we discovered.  Each of us was given a certain part of the project to research and each of us found high quality reliable resources.

b. What did not?
-Because most of us were doing individual research and it was all put together by one person, while presenting we were a little unorganized.  However by the second time we had everything together and could tell our story.

c. What would you do differently next time?
Maybe during the making of the infograph everyone would be a little more part of the creation process.

d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -
Be Concise
Be Visual
Be Smarter
Be Transparent
Be Different
Be Accurate
Be Attractive
Be Varied
Be Gracious
Be Creative
Which of these areas did you excel in? Which were not so well represented? Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

I believe we excelled in being concise, visual, smarter, different, accurate, attractive, varied, and creative.  Maybe not so much in the transparent and gracious.  Mostly because I am not sure how to be gracious in an infographic.

7/3/11 Diario

Posted by Marina Stuart in Spanish Literature - Gierke on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 7:44 am

Women's Masculine Role In Society-National History Day Entry

Posted by Marina Stuart in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 10:20 am
http://www.schooltube.com/video/27b3ff3e001173ee2089/Womens-Masculine-Role-In-Society

For this project to be submitted to the National History Day Competition in Philadelphia, I chose to present on women's masculine role in society because the time period I focused on was one of back and forth between women's rights and also how women stepped into a more masculine role in society that is present to this day. The format that was chosen was a documentary.  I chose this because it was easy way to make a visual time line of events, which was how the original paper I wrote had been formatted.  It was also an easier way to present sources such as pictures and videos. One problem I had was simply the time management, and making sure everything was put together and finished properly.  Another issue was making sure it continued relating back to the overall theme of debate and diplomacy, however just the topic of women's rights during the 1900 in general is one filled with back and forth between men and women and their acceptation in society.
What went well was the amount of primary sources I had in the beginning and the myriad that I had in the end.  The putting together of the movie also went smoothly besides small technical difficulties.  I mostly had a script for the audio before because of the paper I had written on the same topic. If I were to do the project over again I would make sure to focus a bit more on the debate side of the argument and also make the movie longer. I would also tried to get it done in a more reasonable time.  During this project I learned a great deal about what it was like for a women growing up during the 1900's and also more about using the movie program on my computer. Also my knowledge of bibliographies and research was expanded by this project.  But mostly I am glad I learned and got to experience the experience of submitting something like this to a competition like National History Day.

Contrapublucidades de Marina Stuart

Posted by Marina Stuart in Spanish Literature - Gierke on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 7:41 am
