Michael Nicolella Capstone

Posted by Michael Nicolella in Capstone - Block - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 12:22 pm

Abstract:

For my capstone, I wanted to do something out of my comfort zone, so I thought that it would be a good idea to teach the freshman of SLA about stars and how everything came to be in the universe. I worked alongside Alex Held, Richard Yoeun, and Brycen Itzko and together we taught the broad topic of astronomy over a four week period to the freshman.

Much of this capstone consisted of planning out the hour and a half long lesson and making sure that the point got across through various activities and power point slides. I'd say that the most important thing that I have learned from this capstone was how to lead effectively, because when you are the teacher, you are the leader. You must guide the students in the direction that you want to teach them.

Bibliography:

1) "Stars - NASA Science." Stars - NASA Science. NASA, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/focus-areas/how-do-stars-form-and-evolve/>.

This source is about the formation and destruction of stars. It basically talks about how stars are formed or born and how they get destroyed or die. It also goes into the many different ways stars end, like for example they make black holes or make a supernova and explode. I would consider this source very reliable, because it is from NASA. This source will mainly be used to inform me so that I actually know what I am talking about when I present It also is useful because at the bottom, it gives me links to pictures of all types of stars and things relating to this topic.

2) Greicius, Tony, and Brian Dunbar. The Dark Heart of the King. Digital image.NASA.gov. NASA, 29 Sept. 2010. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/WISE/multimedia/gallery/pia13129.html>.

This source is a picture of a cloud of dust and gas that is located in the constellation of Cepheus. The significance of this picture is that this is the stuff that stars are formed from. This would be a good example to show to the class because I want to have something visual in my presentation that will gain the interest of the students. This source would be considered very reliable because it was taken from one of NASA’s own telescopes and it is from their website. Although this source does not provide any knowledge to me, it is important to have pictures relating to the topic, especially since it is a presentation.

3) Pitts, Derrick, Sc.D. "Talking about Presentation." Personal interview. 28 Jan. 2015.

This was a conversation that me and Derrick Pitts had about presenting to a class. The main idea that I have gotten from talking to derrick is that I can't just talk to them and tell them what they should know, I need to let them find out themselves by asking questions to the class. One thing I thought stood out was when he said something like “You are not the teacher, you are the guide” I thought that piece of advice was something that I will benefit greatly from when I teach a class. It will make everyone more interested. I think that this source is very reliable because Derrick has been teaching kids at the Franklin for a long time and he has the experience.

4) "Chandra :: Multimedia :: Stellar Evolution Activity." Chandra :: Multimedia :: Stellar Evolution Activity. NASA, Harvard University, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://chandra.harvard.edu/resources/flash/stellar_evolution.html>.

This source is a good visual representation of the many cycles and forms of stars. They show stars from brown dwarfs to blue supergiants. It is a great source to show to people because it puts in perspective the size of these stars. Also there is sort of an interactive element to this source that lets you click on the different types of stars which gives you some information on it. The reliability of this source is solid because is is on a .edu website and it was done in partnership with Harvard University and NASA.

5) "Stellar Spectral Types." Http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/. Hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/starlog/staspe.html>.

This source talks about the ways that we classify stars that we observe. Usually, we classify them by color and temperature. This system is important because it is how we organize all of these stars that we find when we look through our telescopes and even our own naked eye. I would trust this source because it is a .edu source and they are almost always trustworthy. This source will mainly be used to further my knowledge of how stars are classified so that I know what I am presenting about.

6) Protostar. Digital image. Http://9-6sciencegroup4.wikispaces.com/. Wikispaces, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://9-6sciencegroup4.wikispaces.com/Protostar>.

This picture is mostly just for the presentation. It is a picture of a protostar which is an early version of a star. Protostars are important because they are a good glimpse of how all stars once looked, including our sun. While I would not trust the information located in this source, I know that this picture is a good representation of what we know a protostar looks like.

7) Blue Supergiant. Digital image. NASA.gov. NASA, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/images/741844main_BSG.jpg>.

This picture is for the presentation that I will be using to teach the class. It is a picture of one of the biggest stars in the galaxy called a Blue Supergiant. This picture is a good way to show how big stars can be and just to show the massive scale of things in our universe. I think that this source is reliable because it is from NASA.gov which is a very reliable source when it comes to space and things involving that topic.

8) Fuchs, Miriam. "Teaching Astronomy." Personal interview. 23 Jan. 2015.

In this interview Miriam was giving useful information on my presentation and telling us how we can incorporate the facts and things like that in our presentations. This is helpful because she graduated college with an astronomy degree, which means she is trusted as a source to tell us these facts. Also one thing that was helpful was that she told us about some activities we can add to the class like making a star and then classifying it.

9) Stovall, Idriss, Ph.D. "Teaching Astronomy." Personal interview. 23 Jan. 2015.

Idriss talked about many useful teaching tips that we can use to engage the audience that we are teaching. For example he talked about the comparison of college students and high school students and how differently you have to teach to engage them. He explained that college students are more self directed, while high school students need to be a little more guided because they might not be as interested as a college student.

10) "Spectral Classification of Stars." Spectral Classification. University of Nebraska-Lincoln, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://astro.unl.edu/naap/hr/hr_background1.html>.

This source is more about how we classify stars and where we came up with this system called spectral classification. Using things like finding the color and amount of light emitted from stars is very important when it comes to classifying stars.  I think that this will be a useful to expand upon my knowledge of how we classify stars. I know that this source is trustable because it is a .edu website. Also, this source is from a university, which means that the information on this website is reliable.

Instructions on how to make Italian Wedding Soup

Ingredients:

For the meatballs:

1/3 cup parsley

1 egg

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 teaspoon salt

1 spoonful of breadcrumbs

1/2 cup parmesan

8 oz. ground pork

8 oz. ground beef

For the rest:

12 cups of chicken broth

1 lb. of chopped escarole

2 tablespoons of grated parmesan

Add salt and pepper until you find the appropriate amount.

Process:

1) Put the meat in a bowl along with all of the other meatball ingredients.

2) Mix until you think its fully mixed .

3) Saute meatballs until they turn brown

4) Bring broth to a boil and add escarole and meatballs first. Make sure the escarole is evenly distributed.

5) Add parmesan to broth.

6) Keep pot under flame and periodically stir the soup for 1hr.

Analysis:

Overall I think that this soup is very healthy due to the escarole which is a vegetable and it makes up most of the soup. All of these ingredients can be made organic. For example the beef or pork can easily be purchased organic instead of factory farmed and they are not farmed far away usually. Escarole is another ingredient that can be easily made organic, although it does depend if its in season which I believe starts in early spring and all throughout summer. This can lead to problems but it can probably be grown somewhere else where it is able to be harvested. Also, even though red meat is proven to not be that good for you, it is a good source of protein and you will mostly be tasting the other things in the soup.

Depending on the quality of the ingredients, this soup can be either cheap or a little expensive since meat is quite expensive, especially organic meat. But the good thing about this soup is that there is a lot and it can feed a very large family. This is definitely nothing like fast food. It will take a good hour and a half to cook this and many of the ingredients are quality. I think that some social issues would arise from the meats in this soup, but that involves any dish with meat in it. There are people like vegetarians/ vegans who don't eat meat and there are people who specifically don't eat pork like Muslims.

Personal Reflection

I thought that this unit was helpful to many people, including myself because of all of the helpful info that we learned during this unit. Since obesity and diabetes are a huge problem in this country, it seems only right that we be educated on how to prevent this stuff and eat healthier. One of the most impactful lessons that was given this unit was the ted talk by Jamie Oliver. It seemed a little extreme when he told a mother that she was killing her children, but it was true. That showed how childhood obesity affects our lives and how it can ultimately shorten it. Before this unit, I never really knew what organic food was honestly. There was really no obvious way to tell what food was and what food wasn't. Now I know to read the label. Also being someone who's family members are affected by diabetes, it really was a great lesson to learn about what causes it and how it can be prevented. I also noticed through this unit that America's food industry tries to be as cheap and efficient as possible, sacrificing the healthiness and quality of the food. All of these things can be changed, and hopefully over time it will. I have learned a lot of useful things and now i feel confident and more knowledgable in this subject thanks to this unit.

Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian Review By: Michael Nicolella

Posted by Michael Nicolella in English 3 - Rami - E on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 8:31 am

Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is about a Native American teenager named Arnold (nickname Junior) who lives on a reservation. He is considered the dorkiest kid in his reservation and he is constantly bullied. One day during school, he gets a geometry book that his mother used almost 30 years ago. At that moment, he realizes that he needs a better education and he gets so mad he throws the textbook and it hits his teacher.

He ends up getting suspended. He realizes during his suspension that he needs to leave the reservation or else he will end up like everyone else in his reservation, poor and drunk. Here is a little taste of one of his moments where he realizes he needs to leave:

“‘Who has the most hope?’ I asked.

Mom and Dad looked at each other. They studied each other. They studied each other’s eyes, you know, like they had antennas and were sending radios signals to each other. And they both looked back at me.

‘Come on,’ I said. ‘Who has the most hope?’

‘White people,’ My parents said at the same time....

‘I want to transfer schools,’ ...

‘I want to go to Rederan,’ I said.

Rederan is the rich, white farm town that sits in the wheat fields exactly twenty-two miles away from the rez.” (P.45)

The way the author writes is obviously in first person. I think that this is the best way to show the development of the character. You hear all of his thoughts and know what is going on within him. The way Sherman Alexie writes is hard to describe, but I would call it an informal way of writing. He writes in a simple way, like a kid would think or talk which makes it makes it much better when he is thinking or talking because nobody speaks perfect english and this adds a little more authenticity to the characters. Also, it’s easy to read and funny sometimes too.

Sherman Alexie is almost exactly like his character. He grew up on a Native American reservation and was born into a poor family (like most Native Americans). He was born with a condition where spinal fluid was in his skull and it made his head big. He  had surgery and the risk of his brain being damaged was very high but he turned out to be fine. He was also bullied as a kid because of the size of his head. Also just like in his book, he left his reservation school and went to Rederan high school to get a better quality of education.

Good:

One of the best things about this book is that I actually laughed from this book. I genuinely liked it. One cool thing that made the world actually real was the main character, Arnold who is actually Sherman. The book is about his early life and the struggles that he had to go through being born with a deformation that made his head huge. It really shows that people can achieve anything no matter what holds them back. Also the drawings usually add a bit of humor to the situations. They usually make fun of people and he also says that they are his escape from the hard things.

Bad:

I wish I could say something bad about the book itself, but I really liked it. I can relate to and understand what happens to Junior and why he chooses what he does. Some people think that talking about sex and girls in a book is a bad thing (and it was actually banned in a few schools because of that) but that stuff is in everyones life if you like it or not. It’s something that cannot be ignored.

I would think that this book is for almost everyone as long as you can get past some of the sex and language in the book. I don’t find it that bad but it did get banned in a few places so it must be for some people. I think what makes it good for everyone is that everyone was once a teenager and had to deal with the pressures of going to high school for the first time.

Michael Nicolella Othello Journals

1.

Iago

(aside) He takes her by the palm. Ay, well said, whisper! With as little a web as this will I ensnare as great a fly as Cassio. Ay, smile upon her, do, I will gyve thee in thine own courtship. You say true, 'Tis so, indeed.

Iago is talking to himself. He is talking about how Cassio should keep talking to the girls so that he can get Cassio and his plan can come together. Knowing this is a good indicator for the characters body language and his movements. It can be like he is talking in his head or time froze and it is just him talking to himself or the audience. He could also be talking to the audience because he is plotting to frame Cassio and Shakespeare could have added this scene to clarify what Iago is planning to do. His movement could be pacing back and forth, showing his impatience to make the plan all com together. Or he could just be frozen; showing that he is just thinking in his head for that split second. If he is talking to the audience, he can grab a chair and talk to them saying what his ambitions are and just state what he wants to do.

2.

Clown

Act 3, Scene 1 Lines 4 – 31 Act 3, Scene 4 Lines 1 - 22

- What does this character observer first hand? (What do they see personally?)

The clown observes the various messages and conversations in the short scenes that he is in. In the Clown's first scene, he experiences Cassio giving him a gold coin to go get Emilia so that he can talk to her. But Iago ended up doing the Clowns job. In the Clown's second and last appearance, the Clown is kind of joking around with Desdemona, saying puns about lying. After the puns, he goes and gets Cassio for Desdemona. I think that he doesn't think or know of what is going on because he is joking and things like that and it also seemed like Desdemona really needed Cassio, and the Clown didn't really take notice.

- What does this character observe second hand? (What are they told by other characters?)

The Clown, in all of his scenes is just told to do little errands for the main characters. In his first scene, he is told to go get Emilia for Cassio, even though Iago ends up doing that errand instead. In his second scene, he is being asked by Desdemona where Cassio is, and the Clown jokes around a little and after that he goes and gets him (exits). That is the last time the Clown shows up in the book.

- How can we understand this character's motivations better when we concentrate only on their scenes?

I think that his motivations are just for money. I don't think that the Clown would just do little errands for people unless he was getting paid. What else would be the purpose? I think that this character is one of the easiest because he is in such few parts/lines of the book. If the book were in just the Clown's point of view, we would know nothing that is going on.

3.

Othello

Othello started off a normal life when he was a kid. When he was about 10, he was taken and forced into slavery. He fought in the Venetian army for the last 15 years and slowly rose in rank, showing his skill in fighting and military tactics. That is what led him to become what we now know as The Moor. He has since gained his freedom and, as we know is still fighting for the same people that enslaved him. I think that even though these experiences are broader, it puts in perspective how someone in his position would think. To me, it seems like he has learned to be calm or passive to people (at least in the beginning of the book). I think that this helped him in our scene because he could have flipped out or even just have not talked to Brabantio about it. He actually got Desdemona to confirm it and I think that this helped him win over Desdemona even though Brabatio doesn’t approve.

4.

1.                   I am going to try to speak in the accent that Othello had in the audio. It adds a foreign feel to him because everyone else speaks similar except Othello. For my movement on the stage, I am going to have a different posture. I want to make him look powerful because he is the moor and he has killed many people. Since Desdemona and Othello are in love, I am going to show that by holding hands and stuff.

2.                   I am going to use a sword. Its actually not going to look like a sword that much since it is an umbrella. I think that it shows Othello’s power. It kind of shows that he is a good person because he has the power to kill Brabantio and just take Desdemona but he doesn’t. Another prop that I was thinking about using was a crown but I don’t have one or know where to get one. Also it really wouldn't make sense because he is not a king or anything.

3.                   I think that Jenny's role as Brabantio is really good. So far in our practice, she has done a good job showing Brabantio's anger and sadness. She gets in my face and I think that it adds to it standing out. We worked a lot of work on our movements, accents, and what we will be doing on the stage while we are talking (or not talking). We also have to assume what people are doing when they are not talking. For example in the script, it says Iago enters but he doesn’t talk so we assumed that he was sneaking.

5.

1.                  “If you do find me foul in her report, the trust, the office I do hold of you, not only take away, but let your sentence even fall upon my life.”

This quote shows that Othello has nothing to fear about Brabantio. Desdemona actually likes Othello. This line let me know just what I said. Because of this relaxed environment, I don’t need to have my sword drawn and I can have a relaxed posture. The way I said this line was in a serious tone, but with a little relaxation because he doesn’t need to worry about anyone in the scene trying to kill him.

2.            I think that the performance did go as I expected because we practiced the play like 10 times so we knew what to do. One thing that was not expected was one of our group members not at school but that didn’t really throw us off because that person’s part was small. I am proud of Jenny’s part. In my opinion, she was the best actor out of all of us. Arshelle’s part was also good because of how she read it and also her movements (pacing back and forth, etc).

3.            Acting out the play obviously made me understand what was going on in the part of the play we had. Also seeing how the characters might act like and also what they might look or stand like. One thing that I learned from this is a deeper understanding of how Shakespeare writes. I think that if I were to read another book or play by him I would be able to understand it better because of these classes.

In this interview, I talked to my mom about her crossing boundaries and also important people in her life who did too. In this interview, it made me like my Mom more. I didn't know about half of the stuff she said in this interview. It makes me wonder about how my dads's life was like also. I liked doing this interview because it made me understand my Mom more and I learned about her background more.

The changes that I have made from my last version was;

- A new font to fit in with the feel of the slide.
- I fixed and added pictures

One of the main things that I learned from presentation zen is that you need to make the slides simple and big to capture peoples attention. Visuals should be big and bold, and to make your presintation participle.
