Kenny Nguyen Capstone

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Capstone - Block - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 8:18 pm

For my capstone, I worked with Penelope Deoliveira to create a video game using Unity. The game is about people wondering around in a village once they enter the 4th floor of SLA. The 4th floor is known to be off limits. For fun, we created a story where a SLA student walks into the 4th floor and enters into a different world. The SLA student then roams around the village to collect the 5 core values of SLA, Inquiry, Research, Collaboration, Presentation, and Reflection. After collecting the diamonds, representing the 5 core values, the student then fights the “Benchmark,” which is a monster voiced by a math teacher. To make it even better, we both went around the school looking for students and teachers to record their voices and put that into the game.

We were inspired by this project because we both had prior knowledge in codings from our internship at Temple University. Our outside mentor is Michael Korostelev from Temple and he has been helping us with our video game project throughout the school year. We constantly get in contact with Michael through emails for help with our codings and to debug our codes.

My role as Penelope’s partner is to research what tools we should use and where/what models to use for NPC and wrote some of the codes for the game. Penelope’s role is work on the environments and coding missions and scenes. We brainstormed a lot of ideas together and we were able to make an awesome game with the involvement of the SLA community.

  • "Amplitude Studios Chose Unity." Unity. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://unity3d.com/>.

    • This is the website that we will be using to download a program called “Unity.” Unity is a coding engine to make 3D games by inserting in codes. This is the main program that we will be using for our capstone. Penelope and I found this coding engine because we heard it from a gaming website and it sounded interested to us because it has a lot of customizations for coding. Unity is also beneficial because it has a lot of support on coding. It has a coding support website for coders that needs help. Overall, this is what we are using to code. This program is new to us, so we are working with an outside mentor from Temple.

  • "C Games and Graphics Code Examples." C Games and Graphics Code Examples. Happy Codings. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://c.happycodings.com/games-and-graphics/>.

    • I find this website useful because it has different codings on different scenarios and events. The coding is already done but they need to be modified into our objects and integrated into our video gaming engine, Unity. Since our video game is a fantasy video game, a lot of things can happen from this website because of the already done codings. Some codings would be integrated into our game because it would actually make the game more enjoyable and pleaseable to the player. Some of these codes are extremely different and that’s why we got a mentor from Temple to help us with this project.

  • "Getting Started with Unity | Unity Cookie." Unity Cookie Getting Started with Unity Comments. Unity Cookie. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://cgcookie.com/unity/getting-started-with-unity/>.

    • This website is somewhat like a forum for coders in Unity. But it is primarily a resource where a user posts introductions to Unity from downloading and installing to scripting. It is a video tutorial done by this user that is highly proficient with Unity and has his own websites to help others. The website is also integrated with a community forum where coders posts problems or conflicts they may have and someone resolves it when they see it. So I find that very interesting and useful. The tutorials topics are organized pretty well. It’s almost all the things we would need to make the video game. It has tutorials on physics, which is needed for the video game of SLA.

  • Hart, Richard. "Create Your On Video Game | Unity 3D Turorial - Udemy." Udemy. Udemy. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.udemy.com/unity-tutorial/>.

    • I find this source to be the most helpful of all so far. The user, Richard Hart, demonstrates the different functionalities of what the gaming engine Unity can do. He goes in depth and step by step tutorials on coding 3D games. It is like an online course for learning Unity. Unity has a built in coding system, so some of the objects and actions’ codes don’t need to be looked up or created. That’s a neat thing about Unity. We can do more from what is already provided from Unity. Using this website, we would be able to get a stronger grasp on the different types of codes applicable for a 3D game.

  • "How to Learn Unity - Tuts Game Development Article." Game Development Tuts. Tuts, 12 Oct. 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://gamedevelopment.tutsplus.com/articles/how-to-learn-unity--gamedev-1333>.

    • I find this article useful because it gives advices and hacks for the Unity gaming engine. Learning how to code is one thing, but learning how to learn and use Unity is another structure. The article gives insights on what is relevant and what is irrelevant in learning Unity. The article is primarily for beginners who is new to Unity, which is myself and my partner. Since my partner and I are relatively new to Unity, we will need to learn from the beginning and how to approach. We don’t want to jump start anything and forgetting about the minor details.

  • "Learn to Code." Codecademy. Code Academy. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.      <http://www.codecademy.com/>.

    • During my summer internship at Temple, this is the website where we started off using for our summer project on coding. This website is all about coding from beginners to advance coders. It has many coding language from PHP, CSS, HTML, and Java. At my internship, everybody started off with coding on this website. This had benefited me a lot because it gives you practice lessons then after practice lessons, my mentor at Temple gave us a project to do based on what we learned on Code Academy. So I find that website very beneficial to me and probably to my partner as well in creating this video game for our capstone.

  • Rauschmayer, Axel. Speaking JavaScript. Sebastopol, CA: O'Reilly Media, 2014. Print.

    • This is an online book on javascripting. And the primary language code that would will be using is Java scripting. The book has a lot of contents and topics on Javascripts so that would be very helpful. Javascripting is still kind of rough to me so I will definitely be getting help on this from the online book and our mentors. I have had some experiences with Javascripting during my summer internship, so it’s kind of rough to me right now. But reading the book and getting help will definitely help us in making this video game. Javascripting is the primary language that will be used.

  • "Unity Community." Unity Community. Unity. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://forum.unity3d.com/>.

    • This is a forum directly from Unity. Users posts their insights and their troubles with Unity for other people to help out. This is helpful for us because whenever we have conflicts we could talk to our mentors and post our conflict in the forum for other coders to look at and help us. In addition to the support, the forum has a lot of resources and add ons that can be imported into Unity to make gaming more enjoyable. The resources are open to everyone online. Another good thing is the forum is always up to date, users posts daily. It’s not like a forum that is just there and never been touched. Users are constantly active and helping each other out, so that is a plus for us.

  • "What Language Is Used To Develop Using Unity." Unity3d. Stack Exchange, 1 Jan. 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4989689/what-language-is-used-to-develop-using-unity>.

    • Firstly, we have been running into issues on what language we need to use for gaming. We made several theories and thoughts and it worked out. This website just gives more insights from other professional coders on what language is necessary. The website has a single question posted by one user and other users join in and answer the question on what language is used in Unity. Their answers are very high quality because they based it on their experiences and seeing which language code is more convenient. Users gives insights on different types of codes, which is very helpful for us in differentiating which language to use.

  • "50 Tips for Working with Unity (Best Practices)." Devmagorgza. Dev Mag, 12 July 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://devmag.org.za/2012/07/12/50-tips-for-working-with-unity-best-practices/>.

    • Since coding is a messy process and very tedious, this article gives a lot of helpful advices and tips on coding such as organizations of codes and color coding. One of the key things in coding is organizations I find this useful because I feel like we would run into a lot of conflicts and confusion just because the codes aren’t labeled or isn’t very well organized. So having advices on how to organize codes would be extremely helpful. These tips and advices are specifically for Unity. There are many new things that I never knew of until reading the article. Additionally, it’s our first approach to Unity as well.

Digital Story, Kenny and Penelope

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Storytelling - Rami - C on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 11:08 pm
For this digital story, we asked 2 of my middle school teachers and a friend of ours. Penelope and I asked them about crossing boundaries such as whether they had to act or behave a certain way our of their restrictions. We interviewed them and got their stories on how their lives were affected by racism and adjusting to a different environment. We accomplished our goal by asking them specific questions and asking them further and further for specific details of their stories. Turns out, they had amazing stories of their adaptations for who they are in society.
We hope that this digital story would make the audience feel more comfortable about themselves adjusting to a new environment. Everyone has a story and we hope that the audience would feel comfortable enough to step out of their comfort zone and express themselves for who they are.

The Lost Sister

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 1:15 am

Deep in the expanse sparkling sea, lives a drop-dead gorgeous mermaid, Maria. Some might call her a sea goddess. Traveling through the sea one day, Maria came across a strange and beautiful creature.

“What is this beautiful creature?” she asked herself.

“Uhh...hi...please don’t hurt me.” the creature said, looking indirectly at her.

“It talks!” Maria was surprised by this creature “Hi there! What are you? I’m Maria, the most beautiful mermaid!”

The frightened creature looked back and forth as if there is some kind of suspicion. “Don’t be scared, little one. I’m not harmful.” Maria said calmly. Maria carried the creature up into the palm of her hands and said “I’m here to help. I’m the good mermaid.” Maria looked closely “Wow, you’re a cyclops with antennas and very small ears! ”

The cyclops was scared to be touched and fear overcame him. As the cyclops was in Maria’s palm, the cyclops rolled on his back with his face towards Maria. They made eye contact for the first time and the cyclops never knew it was a stunningly beautiful and good mermaid.

“Wow! You’re different. You’re stunning!” the cyclops said.

“Hi there! I’m Maria...again. What do I call you?”

The cyclops felt comforted knowing there was someone to accompany him. He felt safe. “You can call me Plathro, Maria!” The sunlight was dimming and the dark moonlight overcame the horizon of the sea.

Together, they both swam and explored the bottom of the clear sea. “Look at all these fish, Maria. There’s so many groups of them.” Soon, they could see something gloomy and cloudy approaching towards the frightened mermaid and cyclops. It was darker than the night.

”What is that? It’s getting closer and closer to us. Look, ” the cyclops said. “I have seen a lot of weird stuff on my planet, but this is something surreal, for sure!”

Maria was astonished and anxious to see what could lie in front of her. As the mysterious object came closer, Plathro quickly grabbed Maria away from the mysterious object.

“Maria, it’s the Meranias! Get away!” Plathro said.

“A what?”

“Meranias. They are a group of wicked mermaids who seeks brains for them to form a one big Merania, called a Megarania. They’re vicious. Watch out!”

Together, they swam through across the sea looking for coral reefs to hide under. “Hey look! We can get in there. Come on!” Maria said. Maria was thankful that the Merania didn’t chase them, but she wondered why.

“Whew! That was close. How come the Meranias didn’t chase us? I thought they saw us.”

“Meranias can only see at a distance when their eyes glow red, meaning they are getting ready to take your brains out,” Plathro said, “The Meranias that we just saw were nothing like the one I saw before. They have grown from a medicine called Yortamite, created by humans that makes them five times stronger.”

Many questions arose for Maria as she listened to Plathro.

“How did the Meranias retrieve the medicine?” Maria said.

“Ahem. It is a funny story actually. A group of doctors were fishing on this sea and one doctor thought he caught fish, but it was one of the Meranias. The doctor was pulled down into the sea and got his brains taken out by the Meranias. Other doctors on the ship were unaware that the doctor was kidnapped by the Meranias. It all happened silently.”

“Wow, thats crazy!”

“Yes, very. Then the Merania took out his brain and used it for their own benefits in making a Yortamite medicine to make them stronger. They used the information and knowledge of the doctor’s brain to make the Yortamite. Meranias.... just be a lookout for them at night. They have changed.”

That night, they slept and comforted each other inside the coral reef looking out for each other. It was only the beginning of their journey.

It was finally morning, after the adventurous night.

“I haven’t even asked you this, but why are you here? Aren’t you supposed to be in space on some planet?” Maria said.

Plathro laughed through  his miniature ears.

"Why yes! I am suppose to be there, but some rocks kept on hitting my planets. I came to the only planet that has water because I was thirsty and here I am! All thanks to my newly built spaceship control, where flying is always at ease. My spaceship equipped laser gun helped me so much by shooting out the rocks that were in the way. Thank the lord for that!”

Maria couldn’t resist his personality and laughs non-stop.

“Oh, wow! You’re a funny alien, Plathro. I’m glad that I met you. If you’re wondering, I’m here searching for my lost sister. She’s a mermaid, like me.”

Plathro thought for a second and looked at Maria.

“Hmm. How was your sister lost at sea?”

“My parents are human and they had two marbles. I was a marble and my sister was a marble. The marbles separated when my parents threw them into the sea. They wanted me to search for my sister. My parents claimed it was some kind of ritual that good thing would happen to my sister and I, if I found her in sea.”

Plathro had a blank and grossed out face.

“That is some weird ass ritual! That’s the first time I heard that.” Plathro said. “Yeah, well that’s my story. I’m on a journey to find her. Would you like to join me, Plathro?”

“Yes! Now, let’s get this mission on!”

They set out to search the sea together looking for Maria’s sister. It was midday and all the fish were swimming around the beautiful sea. Sharks, catfish, clown fish, and even stingrays all joined together with Maria and Plathro. It was an environment where anything can happen, fish eating another fish, sharks eating other sharks. “Wow, look at that clown fish stalking another clown fish!” said Plathro. Maria laughs as that got her attention underneath her. Out of the blue, Maria saw a beautiful mermaid a cuddled up in seaweed. “She’s probably cold.” Maria thought to herself.. Plathro behind Maria’s draft as she went straight to the seaweed, cuddled mermaid. “Be careful, Maria.” Plathro warned her. “Meranias are pretty sneaky and cunning and their powers are impressive” Maria got to the mysterious mermaid.

“She’s beautiful! Look at her sparkling scales! Amazing!” Maria said.

“Oh my, yes. She is beautiful. Hey, how you doing you beautiful creature?”

Maria ignored Plathro’s flirtatious comment and went on untangling the mysterious mermaid from the seaweed. Both, Maria and Plathro, carried the mysterious mermaid back down to the coral reef, allowing her to rest.

“She was gentle for first impression. She’s not growling, her crystal eyes seems normal. Maybe she is Maria’s sister after all.” Plathro thought to himself.

He kept quiet and didn’t want to lose Maria’s hope for finding her sister.

“Look at her. Beautiful as you, she could be your sister.”

“Thank you, little one...,” the mermaid said, “I see that you all are in shock. I am Elizabeth the Second. Nice to meet you.”

Plathro stood still and amaze of how soft and beautiful her voice is.

“It’s uhh...very nice to-to-to meet you too...” Plathro said.

“Where are you from, Elizabeth?” Maria said.

Elizabeth looked straight ahead for a while and moments later she said “I am from here. I was born here. How about you? What’s your name?”

Maria wonders why she didn’t answer her right away.

“I am Maria and I am from here as well. I was born artificially from a marble that my human parents threw into the ocean. My sister and I were the only marbles that ever grew into a mermaid. We were the special ones. My sister is lost and it’s my goal to find her.”

“Maybe I can help you look for your lost sister, Maria. As a matter of fact it’ll be my honor,” Elizabeth said, “And you only have one eye. It must be hard to search for Maria’s sister with one eye.”

Plathro felt offended and humiliated.

“Yes. I know. I’m a cyclops. If I have two eyes, you would be in trouble.”

Elizabeth ignored him.

“Cyclops...hmph”

As the day went on, they continued to roam the sea together. In the middle of roaming the sea, Plathro asked himself how Maria would know if a random mermaid is her sister or not and why didn’t she confront Elizabeth if she is Maria’s sister or not. Maria saw that Plathro was not being himself.

“Hey buddy, you alright?”

Plathro sees the careness that Maria showed towards him.

“Yes, I’m fine. But how do you know if a random ass mermaid is your sister or not?”

“That’s a good question. See this circular bump under my chest? When me and a mermaid make our tails touch each other and this bump and her bump glows up, that mermaid is my sister.” Maria replied.

“That’s amazing. So you can never mistake anyone with your sister. That’s awesome!”

“It sure is!”

As the hours get farther into the night, Elizabeth went out on her on path and forgets about Plathro and Maria. Elizabeth swims towards a group of creatures that can only look so disgusting from many different angles. Their glowing eyes can be seen for miles in the sea.

“She is found. What is that we must do now?” Elizabeth said.

The creatures all looked at Elizabeth.

“You must now find a way to get her brains out, before she figure out that her sister is a Merania. We will die from her crystal tears if it comes in contact with us.” said Suranian, the leader of the Meranias.

The Meranias, including Suranian, all looked at the incomplete formation of the Megarania.

“We will serve you well, Megarania.  We’ll get you your brains...eventually...”

Maria and Plathro came to a realization that Elizabeth was missing.

“Where’s my beautiful Elizabeth, I mean Elizabeth?” Plathro said.

“I don’t know. I haven’t seen her ever since I came over and talked to you.”

Out of nowhere, Maria sees something miles away that appears very odd to her. She figures out that it is nighttime and the only thing that she could thought of at night are Meranias.

“Is that...a Merania?” Maria asked.

Plathro hears Maria and froze. He was speechless only until when the hidden object came closer to them.

“Wait a second, that’s Elizabeth. I recognized her beauty and feminine scent.” Plathro said.

Maria looked at him strangely.

“You know you’re underwater, right? There is no scent.”

“Yes but I can sense it from my underwater antenna. Duh!”

The object appears larger and larger to them.

“Swim!” they both said.

“Don’t swim away! It’s me, Elizabeth!” Elizabeth said while still panting for breath, trying to catch up to them.

Maria and Plathro felt a sigh of relief from the surprise appearance.

“Where the hell were you?” Maria asked.

“I was just lost in sea. Good thing I found you guys though.” Elizabeth replied.

Plathro sense that Elizabeth is up to something. His brain is tingling under his hardish cartilage.

“I feel a tingling in my brain, Maria. Something’s not good.” Plathro said to Maria.

Elizabeth felt shakened and shivers got to her spine all the way down to her fin. “What is it, Elizabeth?” Millions of thoughts and reactions came to Elizabeth but she is afraid. She had no response but to flee the scene, roaming the sea. “Elizabeth! Elizabeth!” Maria shouted. Nothing was heard and seen except the shadow of Elizabeth swimming away into the night sea.

Moments later, there was still silence from Elizabeth. No sign of her. Silence. Neutral. “So are we still on a journey, Maria?” Plathro said. “Yes. My sister is still at lost. I will have to come in contact with mermaids for this bump to glow up.” Nighttime was much longer for them now as they wonder what Elizabeth is. “Come on, Maria. Let’s go get your sister!” They both swam together just like how they first met.

The night lit sky is about to diminish and sunrise is beginning to shine through the clear, blue sea. The night left them wondering into different parts of the sea as they exerted all their energy swimming frantically.

“Man, I’m tired. Aren’t you tired?” Maria asked.

Plathro still trying to keep his head and staying awake.

“Hell yeah. Been up looking out for Meranias ain’t fun. Plus, we increased our chances of encountering them because we been all over the sea last night. Good thing we didn’t swam into them.”

Maria took a sigh of relief and guided Plathro to a beautiful resting place. “Come on, Plathro. Let’s take a rest over there. It’s much more calming and soothing.” Maria guided him and took him over to the clamshell, where they can just relax and rest for their adventurous night.

“Do you mind sharing your clamshell with us, little creature? We just need a place to rest and this is the most comforting shell that we can find.” Maria said. The little creature was more than happy to share some space for Plathro and Maria. “Sure! Here you are, guys! Come, sit down.” the little creature said.

The clamshell was so comfortable that they slept there for the entire day, forgetting about the consideration of the little creature. All their stress and tiredness all dissolve as the slept the day away. They both woke up that evening confused. Plathro grunted as his tries to get up from the clamshell. He stretched out his antennas, arms, eye, and his two short legs. Just when his eye is stretched out, he noticed something odd.

“Woah, why is it so dark in here? Hello?” Plathro said.

Maria was woken up by the high-pitched voice and is confused just as Plathro is.

“We are still in a clamshell, aren't we, Plathro?”

Platero took a moment to feel the surroundings him and felt something slimy.

“Yep. We still in the clamshell. It got shut.”

“Ugh! It’s too tightly closed. I can’t open it,” Maria said, “what in the world was that? Does this thing have feet?”

A sudden tilt of the clam left Maria and Plathro unbalanced. The clam rocked back and forth, causing Maria and Plathro to fall side to side. “It finally stopped now. What in the world was- AHHHHHH” Plathro yelled. There was a sudden jolt of the clamshell and unpredictably, the clam was opened by a Merania. Maria grabbed Plathro and swam to the back of the clam trying to hide from the Merania. Maria recognized someone very familiar. “Elizabeth? Thank you for helping us out the clamshell.” Maria said excitedly. Maria and Plathro both grasp as they saw something very unusual and shocking. “What the? Swim, Maria! Swim away!” Plathro said.

Just as the moment that Maria that she was saved, Elizabeth transformed from a beautiful and innocent mermaid to a vicious and ugly Merania. “Roar!” Elizabeth screeched. Maria and Plathro flees the area and they could still hear the distant screeching from Elizabeth. “There’s more!” Plathro said as he looked behind, hoping to lose sight of them. Plathro stopped and sent out mixed signals from his antennas towards the Meranias, hoping they would lost track of where they are going. “What are you doing, Plathro! We must swim and keep on swimming....far!” Maria said. Plathro continued swimming away with Maria. “Maria...why is your bump under your chest flickering? It’s trying to glow. Wait....is your sister nearby?”

Maria thought of this was almost impossible because in order for it to glow, both Maria and the other mermaid has to make contact. Maria was surprised by the flickering bump. “Plathro...I need you to stay by my side. I am going to to swim around here to see if my bump will glow brighter. Look out for the Meranias.” Maria said.

Maria swam side by side with Plathro in different directions, hoping to get a stronger signal for her bump to glow up bright. “Come on, Plathro. We can complete our journey together. We’re really close to finding my sister!” Maria said. Plathro felt confident and proud of Maria’s perseverance. She never loses hope. Plathro thought to himself as to why he never has a family. No siblings, mother, or father.

“Straight ahead, Plathro.” Maria said.

“Okay!”

“It stopped glowing... Did we went too far?”

Plathro sees this and continues to have hope for Maria.

“Probably. Let’s go back and we’ll get a signal. Let’s go back to where your bump was flickering.” Plathro said.

They both went back to the original place, where it first started to glow. This time was different. “Plathro, it’s not glowing anymore.” Maria said. They were too focused on finding Maria’s sister that they had lost thoughts about the Meranias coming towards them. Plathro still wonders about his family. They both stopped swimming and thought about where to swim next.

“Wait! Maria! It’s glowing again. Flickering still.” Plathro said.

“Yes! That means my sister is probably swimming near us. Maybe we should just stay still...right here. We probably have been swimming around too much causing us to get further to my sister.”

They both set still, looking around for any signs of Maria’s sister.

Out in a distance, they saw some object swimming closer to them in the sea. More and more was coming towards them.

“Umm..Maria.. I think we should go. It’s not safe here anymore. They’re coming.” Plathro said. Maria frowned and looks down at her flickering bump. “No. I am staying here. My bump is flickering less and less. I am staying here.” Plathro looked towards the Meranias coming towards them. “Maria, they’re getting closer and closer to us. It’s only for our own safety.” Plathro still advising her to go. “Maria! Behind you!” Plathro shouted out to the top of his miniature lungs. “Ahhhhh!” Maria, in pain as she was struck from behind by a Merania. “Maria! Swim away!.” Plathro shouted. Plathro tries sending out mixed signals from his antennas. It was too late. They were already too close. There was no point. A Merania sees Plathro doing some sort of alien cult, attacked Plathro. Plathro tried to gain back his conscious and swim towards Maria. Plathro saw a Merania coming towards Maria. They both race towards her, like the angel and the devil. “Maria! I’m coming!” Plathro said, trying to gain back his conscious. The Merania came first and gripped Maria by the neck. Plathro stopped and watched Maria suffers in pain. “Maria....” Plathro said softly, almost in silent. Plathro looked at the bump under Maria’s chest. Tears dripping down his alien scale face. “How?”

Maria still grasping for the sake of her life. She was in tears. “Look....” Maria said softly, pointing down at the Merania’s chest, still trying to escape the grips of the Merania’s hands around her neck. The Merania looked down to her chest, then at Maria’s. Her grip loosens. Maria’s tears mixed in with the sea water. Other Meranias suffocating, like a virus trying to escape from the body. Plathro watched the many beautiful mermaids in awe. More and more mermaids swam around Maria. Once Maria’s sister got back to her normal state. They both came together and tears of joy from both of the mermaids were strong enough to kill Suranian. The crystal, clear blue sea, full of mermaids. “It’s over, Mary. I’m here now. You’re here.” Maria said gracefully.  Maria’s sister was blessed to find her lost sister. “Your tears...your beauty....it’s you.” Mary said while touching her face, smoothing out her cheeks from the tears.

“Oh I want you to meet somebody. He’s the one who has been helping me find you on this journey and of course running away from you guys...,” Maria said, “the Meranias.” Maria continued in a whisper in Maria’s ear. Plathro still there crying in tears of how joyful the reunion is. They both head over towards the crying alien. “Maria, this is Plathro.” Plathro was surprised at how beautiful Mary is. “Wow. You are beautiful...you guys are beautiful.” There lies a tale of a happy alien and two beautiful mermaids sister living in a vicious free world, the seaworld.

My Changing Life: From the Worst to the Best

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 11:03 pm

In life, there will be many changes ahead. Sometimes, you have to change for the better, but many people takes the path that leads them in the wrong direction. There are times where you don’t want to make the change because you feel uncomfortable about it or scared of people making judgements. For a better change, one must accept the consequences of it and live with it. Sometimes, developing a change can be the best decision you’ll ever make in your life. In addition, you’ll need to learn how to sacrifice the things you love to make this change. In this essay, I will be writing about my close relationship with my brother and how he has affected my life before and after he moved out from Philly to California in 2009.

When I was little, I remember my brother would come home from high school and he would buy me meatball subs like twice a week. They were delicious. We were very close and we would tell each other everything. On the contrary, I am a shy person and I didn’t like expressing my feelings or thoughts to whomever I’m around. However, with my brother, it’s different. I remember the time when I accused my brother for the bad things that I had done around the house. I blamed everything on my brother. But now, I feel guilty in doing so. Ever since the day he left to California, my life changed completely. That is because my brother was the only person that I was close with. He was always there whenever I needed him. When my brother left, I thought my life would change negatively because he was the one who has been guiding me towards my goals and I relied everything on him. When he left, I felt horrible, thinking of what my life would be like living without my brother.

Loneliness tried to overcome me day by day. But the memories of my brother was haunting me. I tried not to think of him, but the voices that I hear everyday from my family saying how much they miss him didn’t help my self-confidence in overcoming the memories of my brother at all. I always wanted to change for the better when my brother left. It was hard overcoming the change, especially if you live with people that always recall back details about the missing person. The only person that I could talk to overcome my loneliness was my brother. Back then, I wasn’t close with anyone, not even my friends or my parents. I rely mostly on my brother to be there and to help me out with things. This time, there wasn’t anyone to help me. I had to learn to be an independent person and it was definitely hard trying to be one.

I tried to see my brother’s departure as a good thing. Maybe he will live a better life there in California than in Philly. I try not to think of all the negative things when my brother is gone, which was my accomplishment as days goes by after his departure in 2009. I seldom look back at the times of our brotherhood. Instead, I attempted to learn to do things myself. I came up with a mindset that I want to become an independent person.  I believe this is the best decision that I have ever made. Although, I made some serious mistakes before, but I learn from them. We all learn by the mistakes we make in life. That’s how we gain experiences for the actions we do everyday.

In sustaining this change of becoming an independant person, I had to sacrifice and give in to a lot of new things. The first thing that I had to do was to ask more of my parents of the necessities that I may encounter. Usually, it’s my brother that I go to for the things I need. Although, I do ask my parents for stuff that is more significant. Other than that, I just simply go to my brother. But during the course of myself coming to a change, I had to learn to become more independent such as making my own choices. This is where everyone has to go through in one way or another when becoming a teenager. This is my way.

I started realizing that I was making my own radical choices as life progresses. Some were bad and some were good. I made a choice to stay committed to school and maintaining my personal life and social life. Making the choice of being committed to my schoolwork has been rewarding for me. This made me more noticeable in the family. I was a straight A student in middle school and teachers absolutely loved me. Of course there were some rough times during the school years, but I make the best of it. That’s what I was taught to do. It was hard trying to be on top of my game in school, when you didn’t have anyone at home helping you with your homework, unless you call a friend up. My parents didn’t know English. They went to school in Vietnam, their hometown. Therefore, everything was up to me, even the decisions that I decided to make, whether to not do the complex homework or to get help. I was independent.

At home, I was the one who would do all the chores and help around the house. There are times where I have to lead directions in a car to a specific destinations because my parents are bad with directions due to their lack of English. I was playing the role of my brother. Ever since my brother left, I was left in charge of cleaning and helping my parents out. Everything falls on me now. I have to take the role of my brother and myself. At first, I was irritated because of the many things I have to do. But in a way, I find the best of it. By having the role of my brother and myself, I learned to do things more efficiently and collectivity. It was kind of a benefit for me because I get to handle the jobs of what an adult would do. This helped me become a more organized and responsible person in life. I made the worst to become the best advantage for me. Sure, it is hard. But it’s life and I would have to learn these type of skills sooner or later.

A couple years after my brother’s departure, I knew that I was in good shape and I was heading towards the right direction. I started to realize that change is possible. I was able to make significant choices for myself in becoming an independent person. I learned that motivation and determination was the key to accomplish something big in my life.  I changed significantly from when my brother was still in Philly between now and present day.

At first, I didn’t think change was possible because it was such a big change to my life. I know that I would get over the fact that my brother is away, eventually. I just didn’t know when I would get over it. Turns out, it is possible. I became a better person through the hard times that I have been through and I learned from it such as learning about the things and responsibilities that I had to do in my house without my brother. I am glad for this change and for my brother departure’s. Because of my brother’s departure, I was able to learn on how to become independent and relying less on others. This was my way of change of becoming a teenager and a young adult.

Changing for the Better

Comparing “Taming of the Shrew” to “Hitch”

In the play of “Taming of the Shrew” and a modern romantic comedy movie "Hitch," they both portrays control and power from a male and female perspective, causing a physical and mental change in the other person of a relationship. In the play, Kate is a more complex and harsh person than Petruchio. This is when power and demand comes into play from a male perspective. Petruchio “tames” her to become a better person than before, so they can be compatible with each other, relating to Hitch and Sara, only Sara is the controller in this relationship.

Viewing control and power in a female’s perspective in the movie “Hitch,” Sara, a magazine gossiper, dates a dating professional named Hitch, in which she never knew he was a dating expert in wooing women, until her best friend has been with one of Hitch’s clients and been through a one-night stand. This showing that Hitch and Kate have to make a change for their relationship to work. Petruchio and Sara are the controllers of the relationships. In the play and the movie, it shows that sacrifice has to be done because of the change. Kate and Hitch have to put out their old lifestyles for the better. Never-ending relationships only work well when there is control over another person so that one can change to become compatible with each other regardless of gender, as portrayed by Petruchio and Sara as the controller of the relationship.

“I swear I’ll cuff you if you strike again.”

(Act II, Scene i, 234)

In this quote of Petruchio, he neglects everything towards Kate, his wife, to get the best out of her, when taming her. The usage of threat towards her is his method of choice to get her to become a better person, ignoring all her feelings. He’s trying to break the negative boundary that Kate is having. The reason is that because Petruchio is in control of the relationship.

Similar to Petruchio taming Kate, Sara uses a more harsh tactic of exposing Hitch as the date doctor to the community to tame him.
Hitch 1
Hitch 1
In this startling scene, Sara is talking angrily to her boss on planning on publishing the recordings of Hitch teaching one of Sara’s co-workers on how to woo women, which was Sara’s plan to find out if Hitch is a date doctor or not. Sara speaks angrily to her boss “Well, he’s going to have to hide behind a lot more than that once this hit the fan.” Her plan is to ask one of her male co-workers, without Hitch’s knowledge, to ask Hitch for dating advice and the co-worker records the evidences of Hitch teaching him on how to woo women. Sara doesn’t want Hitch to be this way because he teaches men to be someone that they are not, in which the women would fall in love with a “fake” man. This is her way of getting back at Hitch because she was tricked by Hitch’s tactics of wooing women by pleasing them. Sara dated Hitch before she found out he’s a date doctor. She still likes him, however. Therefore, she wants to change him to be true to himself. Relating to the way of taming of the “Taming of the Shrew” and “Hitch”,  Petruchio’s way of taming is more direct towards Kate and Sara’s way is more passive and more modern of using a recorder to expose and tame him. However, Petruchio and Sara both took control of their relationships and their ways of taming are both offensive and effective, even through with different genders. In society, the stereotype is that men is always in control of women, but that isn’t true in anyways. Having control over someone in a relationship can be a man or woman, as shown with Sara and Petruchio.

"In token of which duty, if he please,

My hand is ready, may it do him ease."

(Act V, Scene ii, 194-195)

In this quote, Kate made a speech about how women shouldn’t behave carelessly at the banquet celebrating the newlyweds. The husbands all demanded the wife to come out of the room and to see their husbands. None of the wives came out, except for Kate. That’s when she made the speech. This is the ending scene of the play, showing that Kate is tamed and is obedient towards Petruchio. This interprets that Petruchio took control over her and having that said, she’s now a new person, that had sacrifice her original lifestyle. She’s now living up to the men’s expectation, which was never portrayed in the play before until the end.

Kate shows a clear change in her personality from the beginning of the play ‘til the end and Hitch is just about in the same position as Kate.
Hitch 2
Hitch 2
In this scene, Hitch realizes that being someone else to woo women isn’t always the right choice to do. Hitch says to Sara “But here I am Sara, falling. And there is only one person that can make me feel like I can fly, is you.” Hitch realizes that being with Sara requires a change in his personality because they are both completely different people. Sara fell in love with the fake identity of Hitch at first. Change and power from Sara took control of Hitch by attempting to publish the recordings of Hitch giving advice to woo women. That made him the person that he is and for Sara to love him back for who he really is. In the “Taming of the Shrew”, Kate plays as a role similar to Hitch because they showed a change in person because of control from their partner in the relationship.
“Taming of the Shrew” and “Hitch” shows a clear understanding of change to become a better person for a relationship to continue. Hitch met someone that he likes for the first time. Sara, however, likes Hitch as well but Hitch doesn’t meet Sara’s expectations to be with someone like him. For the “Taming of the Shrew”, Kate realizes what the expectations is for being a women. Therefore, she changed to be with Petruchio. In today’s society, men and women needs to be compatible with other for the relationship to be successful. If there are two differences in personalities, then one person needs to take control of the other person to change them to be compatible with each other, regardless of gender. Stereotypically, men are the ones who is usually in control. However, the media breaks this boundary of that stereotype, bringing men and women to have equal control in both genders.

Humanities Final Portfolio 2013

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 12:14 pm

Throughout this school year, Mr. Block had introduced us with various assignments and projects from both English and History. At the beginning of the English course, we began with descriptive writing. It was one of the first assignment that was started right after summer break. From all the assignments and projects that was given, my personal favorite is the poetry writing unit. We wrote poems on a website called WikiSpace that is shared with the entire class so that we can read each others. Here is a link to my WikiSpace poem. My WikiSpace tells various stories from the many different poems. This is one of my personal favorite project of the year because I enjoy writing poems and expressing my ideas. It expresses my emotions and how I feel towards certain things that can be interpret through poems. One of the poems that I wrote is called an ode poem. “Private speakers,/ Small and high quality/ moving me into a different state of mind./ A nice one/ A calm one.” That was a stanza from my ode poem. My ode poem expresses my emotions towards my headphones because I use it everyday.

In History class, we wrote monologues about the XL Keystone pipeline. This is a first major project of the school year. In this project, I worked with another student and as a result of this project, it came out really well. After the monologues were polished, we asked other students to perform at least 5 of the monologues. This following quote of mine is from an introduction of the monologue project “With this intention, I created several monologues expressing how many people feel about the pipeline, and how I feel personally as well.” When we were first taught about the XL Keystone pipeline, I didn’t understand it very well. or how to react towards it. However, when doing the monologue project, it helped me understand the harsh consequences of the XL Keystone pipeline. Working with another student, helped me even further because we worked and brainstormed together to get the highest quality monologue as possible. To do that, we had to make a lot of researches about the pipeline. For me personally, working with a partner or a small group really helps me understand things a lot better in the classroom. For example, the Sweatshop Trial. The trial consists of students having a role of either the prosecutor or a defender from each group of labor in a trial of a classroom. Working collaboratively with my group members, I came up with a very strong question for the defender during the trial. The question was “How do you plan to use the profit made by your workers? In which their salary is much lower than the cost of the products that they make.” This question was towards the defender of the Multinational Corporations.  I came up with this question from the things that was taught in class and from what my group members said during the trial. Here is a link to the Google Doc that was shared among my group members on the Sweatshop trials. I enjoy working in small groups or with a partner because it takes me further in learning. If I were to work by myself such as the WikiSpace poem, I would try to get the highest quality made and pushing myself beyond personal boundaries.

One of my project that I’m most proud is creating a podcast about the people I know on crossing boundaries. This was an individual project. I interviewed a friend and my two middle school teachers that I had a really good relationship with. The podcast was over 45 minutes long from the 3 people I interviewed. I felt really proud of my interview skills. At first, when I first heard about the assignment, I really thought that I couldn’t do a 45 minute interview because I had never interviewed anyone before and it has to be over 45 minutes. I felt accomplished after the 45 minute interview. I had never done anything like this before and I pushed myself into developing this podcast. As a result of pushing myself, my podcast was successful. For the final draft of the podcast, it had to be cut down to 8-10 minutes. From the 45 minute interview, I removed all the unnecessary points, keeping the important details to become an 8-10 minute interview. The link to my podcast can be found here. The main thing that my interviewees talked about were about violence. The things they said are very similar to what I wrote in my journal entry for history, which can be found here. Based on what I wrote in my journal entry, I was able to go in further details about their experiences with violence in the podcast.

One of my journal entries that stood out the most deals with human inequality. The main question of this journal entry is “Why do humans so often treat each other badly?” This question is really deep because it makes me think about the things that are going on in our world today and even in my neighborhood. My response to this question is stating that because of hatred of race, culture, or it could simply just be the attitude. My full response can be found here.

In conclusion, I have learn and discovered many new things throughout this year. I learned that working in groups can bring out a lot of new things that an individual cannot think of. Working in groups brings out the best in individuals. If I were to work alone, I would push myself to bring out my best effort. Out of all the work that I do, I would try to be original as I can and pushing myself beyond my personal boundaries.

Canvas Scene/Drawing

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Web Design1 - Alfano on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 12:04 pm
Canvas
Canvas
I chose to build this drawing because it seems very unique. It is similar to a scenery rather than a drawing. It was a drawing at first but then I played with the codes a little. Then it turns out to be a sunset-like scenery. In modifying this code, I used my knowledge from building the HTML codes. HTML coding and the canvas is almost similar but different functions. The section of the canvas code that I would like to point out is modifying the speed of the circle. It is followed by the following code, c.fillStyle = "white"; / c.beginPath (); / c.arc(posX, posY, 340, 90, 0, TWO_PI, false); / c.fill(); / }, 30); This part of the code modifies the speed and the flowing direction of the circle. The X and Y position modifying the direction and the 30 represents the speed. The lesser the value is, the faster it goes.

Why do humans so often treat each other badly?

Human treats others badly because of hatred of race, culture, and/or your attitude. Negative attitude tends to lead more negativity treatment towards other people. For race and culture, people may not understand why their "culture" is about. They may look at it strangely and realize that it has nothing to do wit them, so they begin to hate.

What different things change this cycle of negative behavior towards others?

I would say from past experiences. You may experience something bad that had happen to you in your lifetime already. Therefore, you don't want it to happen again. Generally, treat others as you want to be treated.

Which is more powerful, violence or nonviolence?

In my opinion, violence is more powerful in certain situations. For example, if a cop is after a criminal, the cop would use violence to stop him. Nonviolence is more powerful when it's mentally, unlike violence where it involves physically.

Crossing Boundaries Podcast

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 9:22 pm
Racial prejudice is something that a lot of people have encountered throughout their lives. Each and every one of us are set to be equal and the same because we are one human race. We can't just judge others from what we see. This is a main issue that still exists in our society today. This podcast is about racial boundaries of my two middle school teachers and a friend of mine. They talked about their struggles and experiences dealing with race from their childhood until now.

Descriptive Essay: Life is Like a Mountain (Revised)

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in English 2 - Block on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 9:08 pm

All I need is confidence and courage. Why is it so hard for me to achieve those two things in my life? I started to realized that I lack those two virtues when it all started with this girl I liked in my middle school. I always think of myself as strong and determined, motivated and focus, is what I really think of myself. But I can always expect the unexpected. It’s really what life is about.

It was on a cool and cloudy afternoon, I was in the middle of my summer reading, a book called Son of the Mob. As the school year got closer during the summer, I kind of procrastinated on my summer reading. I, then, realized it wasn’t such a good idea to do that. One of the most annoying things that bothered me was the fact that my idiotic friends kept inviting me to hang out with them. I sighed and said to myself “Here we go again.” I just want to be at home, so that I can get my summer reading over with, I thought to myself.

I finally have a good, old friend asking me to join their birthday party; so I went. I can smell the aromatic smell of sweet, honey barbecue. I can also hear all the loud shouting, distant talking and guests talking loudly and uncontrollably. I was roaming the large, packed backyard looking forward to meeting new people. But I never knew that I would meet him, someone very familiar. A man, dressed in black, almost like the guy from the cover of the Son of the Mob giving this girl that he likes, that I like, beautiful, bright red roses. I felt like somebody just stab me in the back when I saw him giving her flowers. It just struck me suddenly.

As I’m writing this essay, I thought back and said to myself that I should have never went to that party. In my mindset, education is what I really care about, regardless of anything. I never thought this scene that I witnessed, is very similar to the cover of the book. I was kind of mad at myself for not attempting to talk to her at first. I seen a lot of these happened on TVs and movies. But unluckily, my situation is reality. Day by day, I can’t get the image out of my head and reading Son of the Mob sure made it harder to erase that memory.

Although, I could be at fault for not talking to her. I didn’t have enough confidence, which causes an agony in me. And now and then, every time I looked at the cover, it reminded me of one of my friends that gave the girl roses. I hated that feeling. It just recalls back all the things I went through that day. But the good side is I finished my summer reading dealing with what was on the cover of the book. I guess that’s the only thing I accomplished, so far. The book is now in my black, iKea desk in my room, never touched ever since.

In life, I know there will be obstacles that I have to face, kind of like mountains. We can overcome the mountain, but it will take time. Similar to my situation, I know I can get over this, but I need time. Society may expect me to go on and talk to her but they just look at things differently from my point of view. They expect me to do actions from their own experiences, however, I have my own. I don’t really care about their expectations because it’s my life, not theirs.

I recalled back the time when we were in 7th grade, hoping that will erase some of the haunting memory from the party. And there I was again, still attempting to talk to her after school. I saw her with her talkative friends. I hoped they’re not talking about me being too scared to talk to the girl I liked. Nervousness had almost overcome me. Boom, boom. Boom, boom. My heart pounded rapidly as if I saw a creepy, looking ghost. However, the fear of her friends are more fearful to me than my nervousness. Now, I know two things can prevent me from talking to her. So then I figured out a cunning way to talk to her, and it is getting my friends that are friends with her to talk for me. It was the only solution that I can think of. I had to do it because I liked her so much.

I was kind of happy that I got one of my friends to talk to my crush. Everything went as I planed. My achieved plan was to get my friend to say all these positive things about me and trying to avoid the negatives. And I guessed she got interested in me because she attempted to talk to me later that day. I saw her in the hallway while switching classes.

“Kenny, hey!” exclaimed my dream girl.

“Hi!” I replied enthusiastically.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in World History - Block on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 11:21 pm

In the past couple of weeks in World History, we have been discussing global issues around the world, from poverty to education. Mostly, we discussed the Keystone XL Pipeline and how there are advantages and disadvantages for the environment. The background of the Keystone XL Pipeline is to transfer oil from Canada all the way to Texas. Some people encourages TransCanada to build the pipeline for the advantages, while others disagree because it is bad for the environment. There were many strong opinions of the pipeline because there were many strong debates in the class. With this intention, I created several monologues expressing how many people feel about the pipeline, and how I feel personally as well. Hope you enjoy the videos from a few of the monologues!

“Let’s Debate!”

(Sitting down.)
Oh, oh! (Hand raised repeatedly.) Can I go next? Why thank you, Mrs. McGuire! (Stands up.) Today, I’ll be arguing against the production of the pipeline. It is quite an honor for TransCanada to provide an energy source for convenience and efficiency. But why are you doing this to the environment? Huh? (Yells.) Have we not had enough pollutants from various energy sources already? (Mr.Coleman, walks into the debate class from another classroom in session.) Oh, sorry to disrupt you, Mr. Coleman. I’ll try to keep it down. (Continues in a lower, but strong tone.) It is not a very good idea for this new developing project from TransCanada. Are we that desperate to build pipelines for more jobs opportunities? Because I certainly think so. (Stares away in another direction.) Let’s talk about the environment. Shall we? An environment is a surroundings or conditions in which a person lives, not an environment where people can destroy. Additionally, destruction of nature means more carbon floating around like a humble bumblebee that navigates without maps, and will definitely make a big change in climate, if that isn’t happening already. We do not need any more polluting objects on this earth! (Mr.Coleman walks in again.) I am so sorry, Mr.Coleman. I didn’t mean to disrupt you from teaching your biology class. (Continues in a normal tone.) Think about the fish swimming happily under the ocean, the ducks drinking water from a fresh, blue pond, all the wonderful creatures that God created, do we want them to go to waste? (Points downstage in a disappointed way.) Our future children will never get to experience the sanitary air, if this pipeline is completed. (Points downstage angrily.) Stop this pipeline, stop it now! TransCanada, you make me sick! (Pause, sigh, look away from the audience, and look back.) Thank you for listening everyone. Oh, stop the applause. Thanks everyone. (Sits back down.)

“Don’t Destroy our Land!”

(Walking through the polluted sidewalk.)  Why is there so much junk here? (Kicking through the trashes to walk by.) Why can’t I walk on a clean street for once! (Pause.) And this pipeline is in development! The ground is polluted already, and the pipeline will pollute the air. There will be pollutants everywhere! To build the pipeline, oil must be extracted from the Canadian tar sands. In other words, fragile forest ecosystems must be destroyed to extract the oil. Ugh, kill me now! (Turns left to another sidewalk and sings.) Dirt, dirt, dirt, go away; don’t ever come back another day. This pipeline will contaminate the air, and the ground is already polluted with trashes, our planet will definitely be devastated! (Sees a citizen littering.) Ugh! Hey! Pick that up! Why are you littering, huh? Have you no respect to your land? I just wish I can say that to all those who litters. (Looking over an alleyway.) More dirt! People, clean up after yourself! (Mumbles angrily.) TransCanada, get rid of your filthy pipeline and don’t ever step into my land of Texas. With this in mind, we must think about our future. How will our future be like 20 years from now, a contaminated planet? If people and TransCanada don’t make an immediate change, we all will be contaminated. Who the hell came up with this idea of the filthy pipeline? It cost $8 billion dollar! We are losing rather than gaining! Efficiency are the only factor that I think will make sense of the production of the pipeline. (Sees dirt on shoes.) Dirt! Yuck, go away! Ugh, people these days! Oh, Obama, my dear ol’ Obama, if you accept the production to continue, I will just sit back and watch America protest all day long, cause I know you care about the environment, which is why you are the “pres-i-dent.” I will watch you cry in agony as the trees and lands are being in destruction, if it does happen. Do you want that to happen, Obama?  Do you! (Bag of chips blows onto his shoes.) My shoe! Contaminated with dirt and gunk! (Kicks it away and continues walking.) Ugh! Stupid plastic bags, bottles, or whatever the hell you are! Don’t even look like objects anymore, more like crap from the street! Don’t even get me started on the atmosphere, once the pipeline is built. Birds, our precious animals, and us; how will we breathe clean air into our body? I wonder what we will be like in the future. (Sigh.) Finally home from that rough journey! (Yawns and walks into his house.)

“A Presentation to Remember”

(Preparing to speak.)  It’s nice to be welcomed to this school. On behalf of TransCanada, I would like to introduce the values and importance of the Keystone XL pipeline. Our pipeline will produce 800,000 barrels of oil per day helping to solve our energy problem. Canada is an ally therefore the oil transported to us will be in good hands with no worry of enemies gaining control of it. In conclusion, if any of your parents are looking for jobs, ask them to promote the pipeline because the pipeline is going to need a lot of help.  (Walking away after presentation and talking to himself.)  I have to pretend that I don’t see the students giving me disgusted looks as I walked pass. I know what I’m doing is wrong. At first I thought this job was simple. Promote a pipeline for some corporation. The pipeline wouldn't effect me or my kids. Unfortunately when I found out the long term effects of the pipe, I was wrong. This pipe is going to cause some of the worst pollution possible. This pollution will cause my kids to get health problems like asthma or worse kill them. The worse part is I’m promoting this. I’m helping and killing my kids at the same time. How could I do this. This time when the students stare at me I’m going to stare back to show that I too know that I am guilty.

“The Protest”

(Getting ready to leave the house.) Alright kids come say goodbye to your dad. I know you kids don’t want me to go, but the tar sands can’t protect themselves. (Talking to self.) It’s a shame when I have to protect my kids future, but lose my relationship with them at the same time.

I know that some protesters have almost gotten hit by trees or horribly injured, but I promise you I’ll be back with no scratches on me. (Talking to self.) I have it in my head that I’m just going to say go away TransCanada and they’ll leave, but in my heart I know it will never be that simple.

I know the machines are right where I’m protesting, but they wouldn’t hurt us it would make them look too bad. (Talking to self.) I’m lying right there too. The only people that know that protesters have been injured are the people on our website. I guess the media doesn’t find our sacrifices good enough to report. I know that I’m doing this for my kids, but if I always leave then they won’t know that.

My children start to cry as I am filled with dread. There is nothing that is more sadder than seeing your children cry and know that you're responsible for it. I’m sorry kids, but goodbye. (Thinking.) I leave knowing that when I get home from the protest, if I get home from the protest. My voice will mean the world to my kids when I get home.

“Boy,it Sure is Fun to Have a Life of a Pipe!”

(Speaks with full enthusiasm.) Boy, it sure is fun being a pipe! (Make a good sign hand gesture.) I get to travel underground from Canada, crossing the border to Texas for $8 billion and using 800,000 barrels a day! I am just a pipe, made up of metal material, nothing special. Why do I have to do this anyways? Gosh! People are just too greedy. They just want me to provide resource from Canada to Texas. It’s going to be a very long journey and I’m not sure if I will handle that. However, job employment will boost right up, but do you think that will be permanent? (Body shrugged.) Because I don’t last long, I hope you all know that! Under those consequences, you will all regret the production of (Points at self with 2 hands.) me!  I’m getting built right near the (Raise both arms and move towards the outside of your body.) largest aquifer in the United States and I can guarantee that I will have a leak infecting your water. (Points at audience.) You all are going to hear the complaints as people are being forced from their homes so I can be built, plus if I leak near a town people are going to have to evacuate. After I transport (Points out.) your oil you will think that you are safe, but the tar sands is going to cause (Show 3 fingers.) three times more carbon dioxide than the average natural resource produces. It doesn’t matter (Body shrugged.)  if I’m transporting water or helping to destroy the world. (Speaks with full enthusiasm.) Boy, it sure is fun being a pipe!

Appendix

1) To extract oil from tar sands, companies must destroy fragile forest ecosystems and then use a very energy-intensive upgrading and refining process to turn that oil into transportation fuel. -(Friends of the Earth: Tar Sands)

2) Activists fear the route may still cross the Ogallala Aquifer, a major source of drinking and irrigation water for Nebraska and seven other states. -(The Undead Pipeline Returns)

3) Tar sands oil extraction and production emits three times more carbon dioxide than average from production of conventional oil consumed in the United States. -(Friends of the Earth: Tar Sands)

4) No matter how safe a pipeline is built, they still leak. Also, the pipe could cut across sensitive environmental areas in the U.S. that are key to local water supply. -(Canadian Broadcast Corporation: Keystone Pipeline)

5) Climate changes and global warming. -(PBS Newshour)

6) “We believe that [Keystone XL] is going to put the Ogallala aquifer in jeopardy,” says Maude Barlow, chairperson of the Council of Canadians. “The pipeline route will go over it for much of its journey, and it will be carrying the dirtiest oil on the planet — bitumen. [Pipelines] do spill. Even the industry admits there is no guarantee.” -(Canadian Broadcast Corporation: Keystone Pipeline)

Las Cazuelas

We had a very good luncheon during Spanish class. The food was fantastic and very enjoyable to eat. We kept on eating and eating. Next thing you know that your plate is empty. A lot of people went to get their second plate. I had to admit, I was one of them. My favorite was the tacos dorados. It was very crispy. And for dessert, we had a piece of cake. But some had more than one. It was kind of like a buffet, which I like. Almost forgot, the drink that I had was amazing. I believe it was rice milk. I learn that there are many foods out there that I haven't tried. And I'm glad that I tried everything that was available. It was the best experience form the beginning of the luncheon to the end.

Negative Space

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 11:21 am
Negative space is basically the shape of the object. The object is not seen, meaning that only the space around the object is seen. It forms the object because of the negative space around the object. I found the negative space in my cut-outs by doing an outline of it. It is quite complicated to explain the process of this. But I did a trace of one of the object to another paper, so I can find the negative space. Drawing the negative space of the stool is basically drawing the shape of the stool. The space around the stool are the negative space.

This also helps an artist to see the negative space when drawing, so that the artist can see the exact shape of the object that the artist is drawing. It can also enhances the drawing because you have the exact shape of the object already through negative space.

Exploring Music Through Culture

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in English 1 - Kay on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 1:50 pm

An aspect of my culture is perseverance. I believe that perseverance is a major aspect of your culture because without it, life is dead. Perseverance is what makes you keep going each day as each battles encounter. I chose the song The Climb by Miley Cyrus. This song relates to my life a lot and others as well. When I was growing up, I never knew such thing like perseverance. I heard of it before but it doesn’t mean much until now. As teenagers growing up, like Miley Cyrus, never know the real meaning of perseverance. In The Climb, it is all about facing your battles. Keep you head up and lead your path, as it can lead you to somewhere special that you may never know. The objects in this song centers around imagery of a mountain, symbolizing the difficulties of life, and climbing, symbolizing the ongoing struggles of life. Although the lyrics are talking about the journey rather than focusing on the destination, many assume that it is about reaching a final goal. It depends on the mindset of the listener to judge whether the destination is in front of them or it is on the other side of the path. As a child, I have battled many battles during my childhood, especially the violence back them to now. That limits my childhood from spending time inside rather than outside due to the craziness of violence. As I was growing up, I began to develop the meaning of persevering. Each day conflicts come at you and you have to overcome it. In the music video of The Climb, it shows a mountain. That symbolizes the conflicts that you have to overcome by climbing the mountains. The mountains are the problems and you are the overcomer. The combination of both is what I call perseverance. “…Ain't about how fast I get there. Ain't about what's waiting on the other side. It's the climb…” That phrase is from the The Climb. This explains how you have to go step by step in life to get through the problem or problems. What moves me about them is the voice of the artist singing it. It is so demanding and convincing to start something new. In other words, if something is bringing you down, you should never quit. Never quit trying to quit is basically the whole purpose of this song.

I believe this song is a very important part of my culture. Without perseverance, I wouldn’t have made it to this day with all the battles coming at me. I persevere every day to get what I want in life. Challenges come and go, but it won’t go if you don’t persevere through it. Like the mountain, in the music video of The Climb, the mountain is still going to be there, if you don’t climb over it. Overcoming your challenges is the word to describe this culture, perseverance. This song has a lot of meanings and it speaks for itself a lot. But the main focus of this song is not letting yourself down when something encounters you. That would just make you a failure. Perseverance brings you up and guides you to do something better to get over the problem. It doesn’t matter how fast or how slow you overcome it, but as long it is overcome, you are leading your battles to where you want it to be.

Kenny Nguyen Q2 Media Fluency

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 11:12 am
I tend to talk about my slide with reasoning of why I put each picture by using some of the vocabulary words from "Presentation Zen" and a resource of my own. Notice I didn't include a lot of words because I think that pictures mean more than just words, and pictures are more attractive. :)

Before

Presentation
What I changed about my slide is that I added more pictures. I took out the "I love pop music" picture because it doesn't fit in with the slide and the other pictures. The slide don't flow along with that picture. I moved my picture to the center of the slide so that it would stand out. I learned not to add too many pictures to the slide. It would draw the attention away, like the main idea. I also learn to keep it simple and to make the slide make sense.

¡Hola, amigo! : How to ask where are you from to someone

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 9:50 am
Have you ever wanted to learn basic Spanish lessons about asking basic questions to someone? This lesson will be about asking someone about themselves, such as where are you from and where you live. This lesson will also teach you how to reply and answer to those questions.

As you can see in the picture below, the word tú at the end of the question means that you are talking to someone around your age. Ud. is when you are talking to an older person.

tú = person around your age
Ud.= person that is older than you, such as an adult

The word soy means I'm and de means from. So if you put it together, you get, I'm from. If you are from that place and you live somewhere else, you would have to say , pero vivo en. Meaning that you live somewhere else from where you are from. This is similar to saying, I'm from. You would just need to add, pero vivo en, after the place you are from. So its, Soy de (a place of where you're from) pero vivo en ( a place where you live, instead of where you are from).

Screen Shot 2011-10-20 at 9.18.15 PM
Screen Shot 2011-10-20 at 9.18.15 PM
After you tell where you're from and/or live, you can ask them, ¿Y tú ? or ¿Y Ud.? , meaning " And you?" or they may say, Yo tambien, which means " Me, too".

¿Y tú ? = And you?
Yo tambien = Me, too.

* All questions in español has an upside question mark before the question, another question mark, that is not upside down, is after the question.
*Exclamation points are similar to the question marks in questions. It has an upside down exclamation point before and after the sentence.

Example:
        ¿De dònde eres (tù)?
        ¡Gracias!  *meaning "Thank you!"
Here's a video of a Hispanic and an American student asking where they are from on their first day of school. This video can be applied in real-life, whereas a student, that knows only English, but can also communicate in Spanish to make them feel welcome on their first day of school. Enjoy the video.

Knowing the a,b,c en español

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 9:50 am
Knowing the alphabet is very important to learn. By learning the Spanish alfabeto, you can know how to write someone's name, if they don't know English. If you're at work and someone approaches you, asking for something, but you can't understand whose name they are saying. So you can ask them to spell it in español and you would know who they are talking about. The alfabeto is very easy to learn and kind of fun too.
*Fun fact : There are 27 letters in the Spanish alfabeto, whereas in English, there are only 26.
* All español letters are lower-cased, not upper-cased.

a   (ah)                  i  (eee)                    p (peh)           x (equis)

b   (beh)                j   (hota)                 q (cooo)         y ( eee griega)

c   (seh)                 k  (kah)                   r (ereh)          z (seta)

d   (deh)                l   (eleh)                  s  (eseh)

e    (eh)                 m  (emeh)                t  (teh)

f    (efeh)               n   (eneh)                u  (oooo)

g    (hey)                ñ  (enyeh)               v  (beh)

h    (acheh)            o    (o)                     w (doble ve)

You may notice that the pronunciation for the letter "v" is the same as the letter "b". Those 2 letters' pronunciation are the same, so if you are spelling a name, Billy. You would have to say "B" larga. If the name is Victor, the "V" would be corta. So you need to tell which letter you are saying, either b (larga) or v (corta). Both same pronunciations, but different letter.

b = larga
v = corta

This is a video of a spelling bee contest, where they hear the words in English and spells it in Spanish. A judge asking a contestant to spell "cat" and "dog" in Spanish. Enjoy!

Learning the Los Meses del Año (Months of the Year) and saying the dates

Posted by Kenny Nguyen in Spanish 1 - Manuel on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 9:50 am
All the months in español are similar to the months in English and is fairly easy to learn. This guide will make you learn the months easily. Everything is simplified for beginners. The pronunciations will be shown after the months in español. A song of the months will also be included in this guide.

January enero                  e-ner-o

February febrero                fe-brer-o

March marzo                  mar-zo

April abril                     ab-ril

May mayo                   ma-yo

June junio                    ju-ni-o

July julio                     ju-li-o

August agosto                 a-gos-to

September septiembre          sept-ti-em-bre

October octubre                oc-tu-bre

November noviembre            no-vi-em-bre

Decembre
deciembre            de-ci-em-bre

*All the months in español are lower-cased. Another thing to keep in mind is that the j is always silent in the months. For example, junio and julio would be pronounced as who-ni-o for the month junio and julio would be pronounced as who-li-o.

*
All the months are somewhat similar to the English months, but the only month that is different than the rest of them are January. January in español is enero. That's the only difference. The rest of the months are similar in English and in español.

Here is a song of the months in español. ENJOY!!

In Spanish the way to write the date is, day-month-year, and in the American way it's month-day-year.

Example: el 15 de agosto de 2011
               15-8-2011

Here's a video of a Hispanic student asking another Hispanic student what the date for today is. (Discuple means excuse me).
