Hikma Salhe- Female Genital Mutilation

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Science And Society - Best - E on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at 4:00 pm
Science-
"Female genital mutilation comprises all procedures involving paritial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO)." FGM is often done on girls between infancy and 15 years of age. There are four types of FGM:
  1. Clitoridectomy- removal of partial or whole clitoris and/or it's prepuce.
  2. Excision- removal of clitoris and labia minora.
  3. Infibulation- the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal.
  4. Any kind of non-medical, harmful procedures to the female genitalia
Studies have shown that there is no known medical benefit to FGM, in fact the consequences are incredible. Most women suffer from problems urinating, vaginal/vulva cysts, vaginal infections, complications in future pregnancies and childbirth.

Society-
FGM occurs all over the world, however it is not as apparent as it once was 20 years ago. FGM is most popular in North, Eastern/Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East. FGM, in most countries, is considered to be a necessity to raise a girl. It’s ‘purpose’ is to keep the female modesty and virginity intact, making it popular amongst men. It aims to reduce female libido and overall female sexuality, by instilling fear into the woman.

Hikma Salhe Capstone

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Capstone - Manuel - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 10:53 pm
Abstract:

The purpose of this capstone is to help people understand the power media has over us as a society. There isn’t a lot of ‘good’ coverage about muslims in media, so I thought that it would be a great learning experience, both for myself and my classmates, about Muslims. Many are not aware of the affect the media has on how we perceive the things around us. With the different terrorist attacks that have happened in the past year, the relationship between muslims and the rest of the world has been an estranged one. Initially, I had not expected to focus on the portrayal of muslims, however, as time progressed, I realized that it was a topic that I felt strongly about. I conducted a series of interviews of students in my school, my final product is a website and a documentary/interview style video. By the end of this project, I hope to be able to teach people about stereotypes, effect of media, and differences. This learning goal is appropriate for me because it is something that I feel very strong about as a young, female Muslim living in a Western Society.

The US has had a long standing history in Nicaragua and has chosen quite a few of the leaders for them. This info graphic shows the pattern of the outcomes of the different leaders the U.S. approved to rule the nation. The power usually got to the leaders and ended quite badly. We chose this subject because it seemed the most interesting and Ms Jonas has close ties to the country.

The Kite Runner

 The Kite Runner

by Khaled Hosseini

“I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.” A gripping and enthralling book about betrayal and self-redemption, The Kite Runner had me hooked from the first page. Khaled Hosseini, the author, was born in 1965 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Kite Runner is the first book this author wrote, it was published in 2003. It also received many awards, one of them being the “Literature to Life Award.” In respect to the authors homeland, this is a novel about Afghanistan and the trials and tribulations a nation, and its people go through. The Kite Runner takes on a broad theme of life, love, humanity, courage, and brotherhood. It begins in early Afghanistan, around the 1970’s, before the Russian military invaded and the formation of the monarchy. The political development of Afghanistan is the backdrop of the story, however, culture and pre-war Afghanistan are one of the main focal points in the story. Against a long trail of national despair, Hosseini is able to compose a universal story of redemption and betrayal that far exceeds its setting.

As the novel begins, protagonist, Amir, the son of a wealthy merchant, is approaching manhood. His friend and servant, Hassan, is from the socially inferior group the Hazara tribe and Shi’a sect of Islam. This foreshadows the tension that will remain the center of the story. Amir and his father, are apart of the Pashtun tribe and Sunni branch of Islam. Amir, Hassan and both their fathers live together in the wealthy section of Kabul. The Hazaras act as servants to the Pashtuns, however, are treated like family which clashes with what’s socially accepted.

While Amir and Hassan played together and were friends, the difference in social ranking between them gave their relationship a wary tension. Amir’s father, also called “Baba”, treats Hassan like a second son. This causes awe and hate to spring up within Amir for his father. Similarly, Amir is secretly jealous  of Hassan’s courage and ability to hold Baba’s love. The author is able to capture this complicated family dynamic very vividly. On numerous occasions, Hassan defends Amir against bullies. One winter day in the mid 1970’s, Amir’s neighborhood had their annual kite tournament. Amir’s spinelessness reaches its highest point when he sees a group of bullies overwhelm Hassan and threaten to rape him. Instead of helping his friend in need, Amir runs away.

There are very few characters in fiction that are as revolting as Amir. Khaled Hosseini is able to take on hatred, envy, and rivalry so much that the reader will feel a lack of empathy towards Amir and his situation. As the Russian invasion begins, Amir and his father leave Afghanistan and settle in the United States. In their stay in the U.S. the roles become reversed. The once independent and prosperous Baba, can only find a measly job at a gas station while Amir easily blends in and becomes an English Major, which later turns to a successful writer. Although life seems to be going great for Amir, the betrayal still weighs heavily on him for the next 20 or so years.

Throughout the novel, there have been many moments when things went dark. When a call from an old friend is presented before us, the theme of redemption is revealed. Rahim Khan, an old family friend, called him from Pakistan telling him that “There is a way to be good again.” Amir takes this chance to go to back and make right all the wrongs he committed. During his return,  Amir is confronted with doing the honorable thing and saving Hassan’s orphaned child or returning home empty handed. After his decision to save Sohrab, the orphaned child, Amir encounters a former nemesis, who is now apart of the Taliban. The story takes on a dark path as Hosseini describes how Sohrab was being sexually harassed by a large group of men that belonged to the Taliban, among them is Amir’s nemesis. After a long and painful confrontation, Amir succeeds in liberating Sohrab and bringing him to America to live with him. While this may seem like a good thing, Sohrab yearns for his old life, which Amir is unable to provide.

As the book comes to an end, the reader will have a change of heart towards Amir. The cowardly and spineless demeanor he had changes to one of courage. Khaled Hosseini achieved a goal that many authors are unable to do, rehumanize the Middle East in a way that contradicts the Western view. Hosseini does an incredible job of describing Afghanistan in a warm and beautiful light, which is often ignored by people in the West. This novel is not written so the style of writing is to be the main focus, it’s the plot and character development that should draw the reader in. The simple language balances out the complex characters and settings, in The Kite Runner.

Final Portfolio

Posted by Hikma Salhe in World History - Block - C on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 11:07 pm

World History, although most commonly believed is only about things that happened in the past, is more than just stories of deceased people. I believe that world history is the study of things that affect the world and the future. In this school year, we have learned so much. As a class we explored many different topics, one that most interested me was the when we learned about social change. Through many different topics, we have studied how social change happens when people make a difference, or when they’re sick of what’s happening.

In the beginning of the school year we learned about the Age of Exploration. We began the unit by studying the Age of Exploration. As we were focusing on the Spaniards and how they were conquering different parts of the world. However controversial it may be, the Spaniards wanted a social change. Cortez and his men wanted to eradicate the “wrong ways” of the Aztecs, so they stood and decided to make a change. Although it was immoral and very fast paced, they made a social change. In class, we did a trial where the class was divided into different groups. We discussed as a whole and then the deliberations started. It was a very interesting jury, and one of the most engaging ones we had all year.

The religion unit is also something that supports the social change. In this unit, we explored many different religions and saw how they changed people who followed them. We did a benchmark in which we had to compare two or more religions. The religions I focused on were Judaism and Hinduism. I also studied how these two view the apocalypse and the hereafter. By doing research on these two religions, I was able to get a better understanding of them.

Another example of how social change makes a difference is during the revolution unit. Everyone in the class was expected to make a Digital Revolution Guidebook that compared two different revolutions. For my project, I did extensive research on both the revolution in Egypt and Cuba. Although the outcomes for these two revolutions are different, they both started with a similar cause. The people of Egypt were tired of having to follow a government that only seemed to bring them harm. The Cuban people were first against the ruling of Fidel Castro, however they received much more benefits than past leaders.

This leads to the final thing we learned about this year, colonialism. We explored the ideas of how colonialism can affect a group of people. For this benchmark I decided to focus on South Africa and how colonialism had affected their culture. This can be tied in with social change because of how the country was affected. Most people believe that with colonialism comes the change of an entire nation, however, the people of South Africa did not let that happen. They accepted bits and pieces of the change, but not the entirety of it.

The Revolution Guidebook Project

Posted by Hikma Salhe in World History - Block - C on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 5:19 pm
This unit we have focused on revolutions throughout history and the modern day. We have had many discussions about how a revolution starts and why it is important in society.  There are many factors that go into a revolution, we have discussed the French revolution extensively. In fact, we had a trial about what people felt, how it affected them, and ways it could be improved.

My project is about the Cuban and Egyptian revolution. I centered the project on the pro's and con's of revolutions. My question for the Cuban revolution is how a revolution can benefit the people and my question for the Egyptian revolution is how it can harm them. I found some very interesting and it was an overall controversial topic. I found that many people had different opinions as to how revolutions can harm and help people.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Hikma Salhe in World History - Block - C on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 8:33 pm
Part I: This unit I learned about the Keystone Pipeline XL and the company that plans to extend this pipeline (TransCanada). This project already exists but they hope to extend it from North Dakota and spill out into the Gulf of Mexico. This project is very controversial because of the many good and bad things that come with it. While this project may boost the economy and create many new jobs, there is also a chance that it could leak and ruin out freshwater. Another thing we studied this unit is as to why the world is so unfair.

Part ||:
1) The Keystone Pipeline XL could create 20,00 jobs (http://keystone-xl.com/about/the-project/) {link can be used for numbers 3-5}
2) Only 2,000 jobs will be kept (http://350.org/)
3) Oil comes from Canada (no more "foreign oils")
4) Will carry 830,000 barrels of oil a day
5) Will cost $5.3 billion dollars

Part III:
  By the Wind

*On phone with her granddaughter. *

*Sighing* Hmph, I remember when I was young. You know, the good old days, where the hills and rivers were alive? Well maybe YOU don’t, but I do. My best friend was a duck. I know, I know, kind of stupid right? Every morning I would take cereal out of my own breakfast and save it for her. She’d come out of her resting spot and spend the entire day with me. One day, these big guys came knockin’ on our door. They started talking, talking about building houses and tall buildings around our way. Apparently, the entire neighborhood had signed this lease thing, saying they agree to this idea. Well, my father was so angry, I could see the veins in his neck popping out. The man left with his paper unsigned and a frown on his face. Two weeks later, I stood waiting for her, only to find out that those same men destroyed her home. They started building a huge apartment complex. It was then I realized how unfair this world was. Our ancestors were ridiculed and even now in this modern world we are seen as inferior.

Now, enough talk from me, what’s new in your life? A new man, huh? Well, he better be a looker and smart too! You make me proud to call myself your grandmother. You always did take after your mother, she was a good woman. I never had trouble raising her, even when her father was away. Yes I know you miss her, I miss her too.

*Tears swell in her eyes. She looks for a way to change the subject*

Tell me about that job you mentioned last time. You don’t want to talk about it? Why not? Come on, tell me, it can’t be that bad. It isn’t illegal or immoral right?

*Chuckles*

Then keep on talking. What is the company called again? TransCanada, and they’re building a pipeline that runs from Canada and spills into the Gulf of Mexico? Now, what kind of oil is being used in this project? If the crude oil is to spill into the water don’t they realize they are ruining what little is left of the fresh water we have!?

*Starts to yell with anger*

Don’t ‘freak out’, tell me this Anna, how is this benefiting to the country if we’re ruining the earth while doing it? We get what we give An. This earth is as much alive as you and I, if you were to give me poison I would die. That is what they are doing to the earth. No I am not overreacting. Goodbye Anna, I have to go.

*Hangs up phone and slams phone down in an angry manner*

‘Don’t overreact’. Don’t overreact?! This earth has been abused by us humans so much, yet still, she gives us shelter. Is it worth it? Is destroying a world worth a few years of economic growth?

    This Life

(Talking to wife) Wow, don’t you look tired sweetheart? (Hold her hand and helps her sit down) Waitressing and working at hotel must be draining. Why don’t you sit down and let me take care of that, I don’t need you to strain yourself even more darlin’. Do you want me to warm something up for you? No? You want a massage or something? No? How about--Oh. You don’t need my help?

(Gets up with his fists clenched tight.)

That’s all right, it’s not like anybody ever needs me anymore. No, no, don’t feel bad sweety, I’ll just take a walk or something. You know, clear my mind, might even find me a job.Sit down!

(Speaks through his teeth)

I said I’m fine!

(Walks to car, turns on radio and sits there. Starts to mutter to himself)

Don’t need my help for anything anymore. Maybe if I had something to do, anything, just something to do. I don’t want my wife to do everything. Providing the money, paying bills. This damn sure ain’t right. I’m the man. I have to be providing for her, not the other way around.

(Man on radio begin talking) What the hell is he talking about? A pipeline is to be built? Now that’s stupid, don’t we already get oil from those foreign countries? What is the point of doing all of this extra work? I mean, those countries already despise us and earn near nothing for all of the fortunes they provide us, but it has to count for something right? Whatever, I don’t need to hear this, doesn’t concern me or my needs.

(Leans over to change radio station. Starts to talk about jobs)
It could make 20,000 jobs? Well isn’t that something. Maybe, just maybe this isn’t as bad as it seems.

(Exits car and walks back into house. Begins to yell out for his wife)

ALLY! Honey listen up, I think that i’ve found a job. Where is it? Uhm well somewhere around here, it’s a good job honey. What kind if job is it? Uhm well it was to build this pipeline that carries some type of oil, what was it called, uhmm…. Crude oil, yea that’s it. Crude oil. Well how the hell am I supposed to know if it’s good for the environment! Aren’t you glad I found a job?! We can worry about the environment later on. Do I know if it’s definite? What is this, 20 questions? Uh well no I don’t know for sure but it is an opportunity.

(Begins to talk in a mutter with his head hung low) I can finally start making some money. You know, providing for you, being the man I should be.

Mommy?

(Talking with her son on the phone)

Hi sweetheart … how was your day? Were you good in your class,  You promise you were good? You what you get if you were good

(Smiles)

Oh, you don't want anything? Now, come one what do you want mommy to get you? You just want to spend time with me? Awww, how about this. I will be home for dinner tonight. Yes I promise i won't be late. you know why I'm always late. I have work to do. No i promise work is not more important than you. I love you more than anything and anyone in the world, Okay do you wanna know what I do at work so you know why I'm always away? Okay so I'm a big producer at this company. You know I'm all the way at the top. At the top of the what? At the top of the company sweetheart. What I do is, i am trying to make sure this pipeline isn't built. What do you mean? What's pipeline? It's this biiiiig pipe that goes underground and carries oil. So you know the president right? President Obama?

(Chuckles slightly)

Yes, I know you helped vote for him. Kay. If I do my job right, and everyone else does their job right, we can stop obama. Well this is what will happen, you know the water we have now? The nice yummy water? In the rivers, the oceans and all those fun creeks we go to? Well, if this project happens, and a small little leak or like a crack happens that oil can ruin the small amount of freshwater we have. Yes I know the earth is 75% or was it 60% of water, hmm, better look that up. So if water gets into it, we only. Okay let me get this straight, sweetheart so you don't get confused and I don't either. The world is mostly salt water and that's the water we can't drink and then there is this tiny tiny amount of water we can drink which is freshwater. So if this oil-this pipeline is built and the oil leaks into that water, that's gonna mean no more water for us. And that means we're gonna have to go aaaalllll the way to get salt water. Do you want salt water sweetheart? No, I thought so because I don't like it either.  Kay? I understand that you're like 'ooooh this is just a pipeline, you don't need to do anything about it' But think about it, you love those fishies right? Yea I know you do because you have one of them in your -- our home. But if this pipeline is built all of the fishies will die. Then who will take you fishing? Yea well not who but what will you do when you go fishing?

(Starts to frown and looks sad. Voice breaks slightly)

I know that sometimes I get a little too carried away at work and that I might spend a little too much time there and don't spend enough time with you, but I promise sweety, I swear that if this project is over. If obama, the president, declines the project. I promise I'll spend more time with you and I'll take you to chuckie cheese, and maybe we can go to the playground and have a little picnic. Yes, I'll even be there for your birthday. I promise I won’t be late for dinner. Yes, I love you too.

(Hangs up phone, with tears in her eyes)

Reflection

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Art - Freshman - Hull on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Write two sentences for each core value and how the element project is reflected in the words.

Inquiry- I had many questions as to what my element was. Also, this was new to me, as I have never even heard of this element.

Research - To print this element I had to do research as to how it is used in day to day lives. I read many articles and looked up many websites and saw how it affects us.

Collaboration - I collaborated with my science teacher and found out more information on Tellurium (my element). I also talked to students outside of my classroom and asked them for help.

Presentation - I drew 3 copies of this print before it was finalized. Another thing is the colors that were used in this print of my element.

Reflection- I can honestly say that I learned many things about this element in my time of research. I know that I won't forget it quickly.

Negative Space Reflection

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Art - Freshman - Hull on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 8:32 pm
Negative Space is when you draw the outline of an object on one side and the other side is colored in.
I found the  negative space by looking in the empty space between the objects. Then I shaded it in.

I think it is important for artist to use negative space so they can see the whole object.

Negative space enhances pictures so you can see the outlines of the object. And so you can identify where what object begins and ends.

Final Perspective Drawing-Blue stream-2013-perspective

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Art - Freshman - Hull on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 3:56 pm

A. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before.

This project, like every other project at SLA, was a learning experience. One thing that I learned that I found interesting is the concept of one point perspective drawings. Before that assignment, I never even knew something like that existed.

B. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better.

It made my drawing and my overall artistic skills better by adding a flare to it. I'm not saying that i'm the best artist or even an intermediate, but because I've learned the skill of drawing in perspective I can make things come to life. 3D art is always interesting to look at, but knowing that I was the one behind the work of art makes me happy.

C. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?

Technically speaking, I have done this assignment twice, and speaking from experience it made it better. Now, I am not implying that it is perfect, but by redoing it I made it more professional. If I could do this assignment over, I would add more color and detail to it.

D. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?

My advice to someone who has never done it would be to follow all of the directions given (if there are any). Also to have every orthogonal line go to you vanishing point.

E. What resource helped you the most and why?
The resourced that helped me the most are my classmates, teacher and also the slideshow that was provided to aide me through the process.

Below is the picture of my final product!

Q3 Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Geometry - Thompson on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 8:39 am
1) How does this project relate to the real world?

If I were to become a construction builder, I would I have to do this as a living, in order to do that I have to measure the length and width of the block to build a new building.

2)What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?

The least exciting part of this benchmark must be the amount of work we had to do. It seemed to drag on and on. The most exciting part of this benchmark is the going outside and measuring part.

3) What did you learn from completing this project?

That there is more to just measuring buildings with a measuring tape. It is a really long process that requires time and effort. I also learned the different methods to measuring the height of a building with different items and methods.

Hikma Salhe : Media Fluency

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 10:34 am
I tried to make this slide incredibly easy and clear to understand. This way, people would not become confused as to what the message is. Making one slide to describe myself with least amount of words possible is very difficult. At first I made it like a professional and alot of words, but i realized that it would be too much.
When i saw the link to Presentation Zen, I realized that I was doing it wrong. I needed to do techniques to make it simple yet effective. For my slide I chose many techniques to make my slide personal. One thing I did was to "bleed" the image. I found out about this technique from the website about Presentation Zen.
In conclusion, by having less words the slide becomes more interesting. People become drawn to the picture and don't pay attention to the words.

REFLECTION:

From the criticism I heard of my peers slides, I realized that I shouldn't overwhelm the people who are looking at it and the slide its self. I now know that I shouldn't add too many words and pictures. I have to  make my slide simple yet effective. If there are too many things at once, the focus of the slide will be lost. I did not make much changes and instead kept it very similar to my old slide.

This lesson is for people who are being introduced to Spanish for the first time. To learn Spanish, you have to first know the alphabet and how to pronounce it. After you have familiarized yourself with it, you can then move on to the next step of learning Spanish.

Salhe, Hikma Lucidchart My Homenetwork

Posted by Hikma Salhe in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 11:16 am
AN (Local Area Network) is an ethernet in which you can connect to your pc, servers, other devices. On my internet connection I have two ipods, 3 Hp laptops, 2 Gateway laptops, 1 Macbook pro, a Dell Desktop, and a tv that uses internet. From the book O.M.G I realized how unsafe the internet can be if you don't use it safely. For example, I learned that I have to be cautious of what I post on the internet. Also, that there are hackers and people who can do bad things to your computer. To protect myself from these types of hackers, I can put a password on my WIFI. This protects my internet and helps it be fast and easy to access.
